The Daily Buzz For June 24 ☕πŸ“°☕

Ciara & Teyana Taylor along with the ICON Iman covers 'Essence' Magazine!
Ciara, Iman and Teyana Taylor are the cover stars of Essence‘s July/August issues, available now.

Here’s what the trio had to share with the mag:
Ciara on becoming resilient: “The biggest thing for me has been understanding how important patience is…My faith has carried me through every challenge and triumph. When I was younger and wanting things to happen when I wanted them to happen. I could never have imagined that 15 years later I’d be having the time of my life.”
Iman on David Bowie encouraging her to launch her cosmetics line: “He literally did not understand fear. He was in my corner cheering me on every step of the way. If it wasn’t for him, I would never have done it.”

Teyana on showing real love with husband Iman Shupert: “I don’t want my supporters to feel like we’re untouchable. I don’t want y’all to think we’re Perfect Pattys, because that’s just not real. I think sometimes it takes other couples to see like, ‘Damn, they were able to talk and get through it. That’s inspirational…’”

#RHOA: Is Kandi Burruss Expands her “Old Lady Gang” Restaurants and also prepping a TV Show?
Kandi and her husband, Todd Tucker, opened popular soul food restaurant – Old Lady Gang – based on the recipes of her mother, Joyce Jones; and aunts Nora and Bertha. The business has, now, expanded to three ATL locations – Peters Street, Camp Creek, and even a mini-location in the State Farm Arena.

The television world will allegedly be the next Old Lady Gang location! There’s no word yet on whether or not the restaurant’s on-screen debut will be in the form of a spinoff series or special – but the show will, allegedly, feature Kandi, Todd, and their staff.
The show is destined to be a success, considering Kandi is one of the reigning queens of “Real Housewives” spinoffs. She’s had three under her belt since she first became a peach-holder in 2009: “The Kandi Factory,” which earned music industry hopefuls a chance to work with the hit songwriter; “Kandi’s Wedding,” giving the world a glimpse of her glamorous nuptials; and “Kandi’s Ski Trip,” featuring a drama-filled family vacay.

#Empire: Jussie Smollett Celebrates 37th Birthday Even As Potential For New Charges Loom
What, me worry?  Despite a judge’s indication that a special counsel may be needed to examine the dropping of criminal charges against him, Jussie Smollett apparently had a happy birthday.

The 37-year-old actor is “still smiling,” he claimed in an Instagram post Friday that drew nearly 100,000 likes. Smollett had 16 charges in his hate hoax case dismissed by Chicago prosecutors. Now, another judge has questioned that decision and indicated new charges could be filed.

“Grateful for LOVE. Grateful for y’all. Grateful for another year around the sun. #SummerSolstice #StillSmiling,” said the Instagram message.
Judge Michael Toomin said Friday that the Smollett case was filled with legal blunder and called on an independent counsel to “restore the public’s confidence in our criminal justice system.”
Smollett had claimed he was attacked by two men in the early morning on a frigid Chicago street. Investigators determined that the attack was staged. Smollett subsequently lost his job on the TV show Empire, and the showrunners said he will not return.

#HipHopNews: Nicki Minaj calls Miley Cyrus ‘Perdue Chicken’ on Queen Radio
Everything old is new again, at least during Friday’s installment of Nicki Minaj’s Queen Radio. If you heard Miley Cyrus’s new EP She Is Coming and thought, “There is no way Nicki Minaj is going to like that shout-out,” well, you were right. Those who don’t learn their 2015 VMAs history are doomed to repeat it. And while Miley’s Nicki mention might have been pretty tame (“I love you, Nicki, but I listen to Cardi”), Minaj’s response was not. “Perdue chickens can never talk shit about queens,” she told the audience of her Beats 1 show. “She disrespected me in a magazine article for no reason. I had just seen her after she sucked Mike WiLL’s dick in the studio.” Producer Mike WiLL Made-It worked with Cyrus on her 2013 album Bangerz in addition to She Is Coming.

As for the four-year-old magazine article comments Nicki mentioned, that was actually the origin of their feud, if you’ll recall. “Now you coming out with pink wigs,” fumed Minaj. “All you bitches wanna be Nicki.” Miley’s recent purple-wig look is, of course, from an episode of Black Mirror, though the episode does involve her playing a pop star named Ashley O, who absolutely would (be forced to) lift ideas from Nicki, if it spelled success.

Sadly, all this suggests Miley Cyrus will not be getting a plus-one to Nicki’s upcoming nuptials, which the “Megatron” singer also alluded to on Friday. Minaj said of her relationship with boyfriend Kenneth Petty, “We did get our marriage license.”

Tony Award-winning performer and star of FX’s POSE Billy Porter is set to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, according to Variety.
Porter, 49, has performed in many Broadway shows including: Shuffle Along, Grease, Five Guys Named Moe and Miss Saigon. The longtime veteran is best known for playing Lola in Kinky Boots.

According to Broadway.com, he earned Hollywood acclaim for portraying Pray Tell on the FX series Pose.
Other performers getting stars on the Walk of Fame with ties to Broadway are Christina Applegate (Sweet Charity, 2005) and comedian Dave Chappelle, who this summer will have a five-performance engagement on Broadway, the website reported.

In Weird News: Teairra Mari Arrested for DWI in New York
Teairra Mari was arrested Saturday morning for reportedly driving while intoxicated in New York.

According to TMZ, Mari was pulled over by law enforcement after they spotting her red Dodge Charger coming out of the Midtown Tunnel into Queens doing something suspicious. TMZ reports that her vehicle had sparks shooting up from the front, which were caused from the right wheel being missing and the bumper making contact to the ground.
The police made Mari perform field sobriety tests after coming to a full stop. While it isn’t reported she blew into a Breathalyzer, TMZ says she had trouble maintaining her balance when she exited the vehicle. Furthermore, she allegedly smelled like alcohol.

Mari was arrested and booked for DWI and driving without a license.
It is unclear if she has been released from custody yet. She has not posted on her Twitter or Instagram since the arrest this morning.

Mari already has enough on her plate with 50 Cent constantly reminding her to pay him. Although Fif hasn’t posted about this incident on social media yet, it’s only a matter of time until he hears about the unfortunate news. Just try to be nice for once, Fofty.

Man Tries To Steal Halle Berry’s Home tried to Change The Locks & Creates A Fake Deed
We’ve all heard stories about celebrities falling victim to home invasions. But one man took things a step further with actress Halle Berry and tried to steal her whole house.  Yes, her house!

Apparently, a 59-year-old man named Ronald Eugene Griffin popped up at her house in L.A. back in January. He was caught playing around with the locks, but then ran off after Berry’s gardener confronted him. But that wasn’t the last time he’d be in her home. In fact, police were called back in March after Griffin tried to trespass onto her property. He was at her home with a locksmith, saying he was the new owner of the home and needed to get inside. He even said he had a deed on hand as evidence.
The story gets even crazier though. Before police arrived, Griffin was able to get one of the locks changed. And he was the one who actually called the police after Berry’s staff approached him. Then, he claimed they were ones who were trespassing.

Of course LAPD didn’t buy his story and realized the deed he claimed he had was fake. Berry reportedly told investigators that she had never met the man and didn’t know who he was. She also confirmed he absolutely didn’t have the green light to be on her property, let alone get inside.

Griffin was taken into custody and charged with a felony of procuring and offering a false warranty deed. He was also charged with one count of petty theft. His bail is $36,000.
Another strange fact about this story? The man had no clue he was at Berry’s house. It turns out that was nothing more than a coincidence.

Berry is no stranger to having unwelcomed guests in her home. She said in 2011 court documents that she came home and encountered an intruder in her kitchen. She said in court documents that Richard Franco, who was 27 at the time, broke into her home.
“[I] ran as fast as I could. I was shocked to see a complete stranger, carrying something in his hands and approaching us. I screamed, ‘There’s a guy in my yard!’ “

She made her way to the panic room monitor and saw the man walk away. But then he came back the next night.

“As I opened my glass kitchen door and closed it behind me, all of a sudden I sensed someone behind me and turned to see the intruder standing less than a foot behind me, staring through my glass kitchen door. Panicking and in fear of my life, I quickly hit the deadbolt lock on the glass door. I grabbed my phone and ran as fast as I could upstairs, slamming each door behind me as I ran. I got upstairs to a safe place, locked myself inside and dialed 911.”

He was later arrested and charged with felony stalking after he returned for the third night. By then, Berry had hired security who was able to warn her he was on the property.

HUH?

#BoxOfficeNews: 'Toy Story 4' wins the Weekend Box Office With $118 Million
With an estimated $118 million, Disney and Pixar's Toy Story 4 topped the weekend box office, though fell well short of the studio's $140+ million expectations. The performance is, however, the best of the franchise, topping Toy Story 3's $110.3 million opening back in 2010 and fourth largest animated opening ever, which are hardly milestones you can ignore. It's also worth mentioning this is the third largest opening weekend of the year, giving Disney the top four openings of 2019.

UA Releasing's Child's Play delivered a second place finish with an estimated $14 million. Heading into the weekend the film was tracking similarly to Universal and Blumhouse's Ma, which debuted with over $18 million just a few weeks ago, and even the film's Thursday night previews ($1.65 million) suggested it was well on its way to a similar opening. However, it was unable to sustain its momentum and came up shy of the $16-18 million pre-weekend expectations. The film carries a reported budget around $10 million and received a "C+" CinemaScore from opening day crowds.

Landing in third position is Disney's Aladdin with an estimated $12.2 million, dipping just -29.5% as it enters its fifth week in release with a domestic cume just shy of $288 million. Internationally, the film added nearly $33 million this weekend for an overseas cume that now totals $522.6 million and a global tally topping $810 million.

Rounding out the top five is Universal and Illumination's The Secret Life of Pets 2, which dipped -58% in the face of Toy Story 4's debut, with an estimated $10.3 million for the weekend. The film's domestic cume now stands at $117.5 million as it enters its third week in release. The film also added another $10.8 million internationally this weekend for an overseas cume that now totals over $77 million and a global tally just shy of $195 million.

Nicki Minaj Says She & and Boytoy Kenneth Petty Got Their Marriage License
We saw this coming.  Nicki Minaj made her big return today from her hiatus to promote her new "Megatron" single and new "BAPS" track with Trina.  She pulled up at Queen Radio with some tea.  She was a few hours late, but made it worth it for her Barbs.

While catching everybody up on her life, she dropped the nugget that she's about to get married to her boyfriend, who she made her leading man in her new vid, Kenneth Petty.
They haven't exchanged vows - yet - but it looks like they're now on the clock to do so. Nicki revealed they filed for their marriage license.  And with marriage licenses, you have a certain amount of days to make it official in front of a minister for the license to be valid.

Later in the convo when she brought Trina up to Queen Radio to chop it up, she explained what's really going on.
She asked Trina if she wants to get married, then Nicki revealed, “I just got my marriage license.”
While Trina was congratulating her on becoming a wife, Nicki responded:
“No, I’m not a wife.  I filed for the marriage license.  We have to pick it up, and then get married.“

She also said she's ready to have babies soon and they're already working on it.
Welp, looks like she's about to be Mrs. Muva Barb soon.  And she gives nan a damn about who has a problem with it.  While she caught plenty of draggings for having an ex-con boyfriend who did time for attempted rape, she defended Kenneth once again in the first bars on "Megatron":

"He got Margielas on, and I get my jealous on
I f-ck him like I miss him, he just came out of prison
B-tches be talkin' sh-t, but they ain't got a pot to piss in"

Whatever?

Tyler Perry Brings White House Drama “The Oval” To BET
Tyler Perry is bringing a new series that will highlight drama in the White House to BET.
“The Oval” is Perry’s next TV series,  which will tell the story of a new first family entering the White House. #EdQuinn has been cast as President Hunter Franklin, while #KronMoore will play First Lady Victoria Franklin. The series will also feature Paige Hurd and Daniel Croix Henderson as the Franklins’ children, Variety reports.

“I’ve been hard at work on ‘The Oval’ and can’t wait to share this story with audiences,” Perry said. “I’ve set out to create a show that tells the story of a family placed in the White House by people of power while also highlighting the personal side and everyday lives of the staff who run the inner workings of the nation’s most iconic residence.”

This series was written, directed and executive produced by Perry. Michelle Sneed will act as executive producer of the series for Tyler Perry Studios. This is Perry’s first show under his new production deal with Viacom.

In addition, the 49-year-old is also running another drama series, two comedies and a live holiday special for BET. By the next year, Perry is expected to produce more than 75 hours of original content for BET.

U.S. Supreme Court Tosses Conviction Of Black Man After Six Murder Trials; SCOTUS Cites Racial Discrimination
49-year-old Curtis Flowers is a death-row inmate who has spent 22 years in jail and endured six re-trials for the 1996 murder of four people at a Mississippi furniture store. Now, the Supreme Court has decided to throw out Flowers’ conviction by a 7-2 vote.

Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote the opinion for the court, joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and four liberal justices, who believe the prosecution’s dismissal of 41 out of the 42 prospective black jurors is evidence of racial discrimination and a violation of Flowers’ rights. The questioning of the black and white prospective jurors in the case were also dramatically different, according to the Justices, further proving racial injustice.

In Flowers’ last trial, the jury was made up of 11 white jurors and one African American juror. According to the Associated Press, District Attorney Doug Evans axed five black prospective jurors. Previously, three convictions were tossed out, including one where the prosecutor improperly excluded African Americans from the jury and two other trials ended with jurors not reaching unanimous verdicts.

“The numbers speak loudly,” Kavanaugh said in his opinion, read out loud in the courtroom, noting that Evans had removed 41 of the 42 prospective black jurors over the six trials. “We cannot ignore that history.” The Supreme Court’s decision in Batson v. Kentucky in 1986 set up a system that allowed trial judges to evaluate claims of discrimination and the race-neutral explanations by prosecutors.

While the court may favor Flowers, its ruling does not impede Mississippi from putting him on trial for the seventh time. Fellow conservative Justice Clarence Thomas dissented in the case and in his dissenting statement, Thomas described the court’s ruling as “manifestly incorrect.” He noted that Flowers can still be convicted again and that the court’s majority “does not dispute that the evidence was sufficient to convict Flowers or that he was tried by an impartial jury.”

Prosecutors claim Flowers was upset with the Tardy Furniture store owner for firing him and withholding his paycheck to cover costs of merchandise he damaged. He was convicted of killing store owner Bertha Tardy, bookkeeper Carmen Rigby, delivery worker Robert Golden and part-time employee Derrick Stewart. All except Golden were white.

Benny Rigby, Carmen Rigby’s husband, was disappointed with the ruling and said he has no doubt that Flowers killed his wife and the other victims. “There is no justice,” Rigby said. “If he was white, he would have been executed by now.”
Flowers’ oldest brother, Archie Flowers Jr. told Mississippi Clarion Ledger his first reaction when he heard the news was, “Thank God.”

“But I think they should have let him go period,” Archie said. “There is no doubt in our minds, he is innocent, and God proved that today.”

Tuskegee Airman who flew 142 WWII combat missions Robert Friend dies at 99
LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — World War II pilot Robert Friend, one of the last original members of the famed all-black Tuskegee Airmen, has died at the age of 99.
Friend’s daughter, Karen Friend Crumlich, told The Desert Sun her father died Friday at a Southern California hospital.

Born in South Carolina on 1920′s leap day, Friend flew 142 combat missions in World War II as part of the elite group of fighter pilots trained at Alabama’s Tuskegee Institute. The program was created after the NAACP began challenging policies barring black people from flying military aircraft.
Friend’s 28-year Air Force career included service in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He also worked on space launch vehicles and served as foreign technology program director before retiring as a lieutenant colonel and forming his own aerospace company.

Steve Harvey’s Annual Jazz Festival Is The Dominican Republic Is Moving Amid Concerns Over Tourist Deaths
*Steve Harvey’s third-annual Sand and Soul Festival was set to take place this fall at a Dominican Republic resort where at least 2 U.S. tourists have died in the last year. But according to INSIDER, the event is being relocated amid concerns over the safety of tourists in the country.

The event was set to be held from October 10 to October 14 at the all-inclusive Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Punta Cana. As reported by Business Insider, David Harrison, 45, of Maryland died at after falling ill while he was vacationing at resort last July. In April, Robert Bell Wallace, 67, of California, died at the same resort after he became ill from consuming a drink from his hotel room minibar.

Sand & Soul Executive Producer Morgan Hawthorne sent an email to ticket buyers noting that the festival is still finalizing the details on a new location, which will be revealed next week.
“There has been a lot of negative media in the recent weeks surrounding the Dominican Republic and its safety for tourists to travel. We want you to know that higher than anything, we regard your safety as most important. This is why it has been an easy decision for us to move the Sand & Soul Festival out of the Dominican Republic this year,” Hawthorne wrote in the email, obtained by INSIDER.

Hawthorne confirmed the festival will still be held October 10 to October 14.
“We ask that you allow us until the top of next week to disclose the new location to you, as we finalize the details,” the email said. “At this time our main concern was to give you peace of mind that the Dominican Republic is no longer a part of the 2019 Sand & Soul experience.”

The festival’s all-star celebrity line up reportedly includes Ginuwine, Doug E. Fresh, LisaRaye, and Anthony Hamilton. It’s unclear if refunds will be issued to folks who no longer want to travel to the country.
Since last June, at least 11 US tourists have died while staying at resorts in the D.R.

Ciara's parents divorced after 33 years of marriage
Ciara had an "out-of-body" experience when her parents divorced after 33 years of marriage.
The 33-year-old singer has revealed her parents decided to split after over three decades of marriage, and Ciara found the experience strange, as she had already given birth to her son Future Zahir, now five, whom she has with ex Future, and believed "mummy and daddy that made the baby" should be together forever.

Speaking on 'RuPaul' on Friday (21.06.19), Ciara said: "Actually, I've never said this before. I think I can see it with okay ... within myself ... my parents were married for 33 years, and they're not together anymore. However, they're both happily married, so ... it's good!

"That was, for me, that was very out-of-body too because imagine, you go through 33 years of mum and dad being together and then when I had my child, my son, my first child, I was like ... I just know mummy and daddy that made the baby is what the scenario is supposed to be. So that was like, whoa, when that happened at that time."

The 'Level Up' singer eventually split from Future and is now married to Russell Wilson - with whom she has two-year-old daughter Sienna - and says her parents split shortly after the NFL star, whom she married in 2016, came into her life.
When asked if her parents' split happened at the same time she gave birth to Future, she said: "Actually, yes. My mother and father went separate ways shortly after ... Actually, shortly after Russell came into our lives."
And although she's sad her parents are no longer together, she insists she's "happy" they've both found love with other people.

She said: "Like I say, my mother and father are now happily married and I never thought that I'd be okay with that, and I really am. I'm happy that they're happy."

Roseanne Barr, Andrew Dice Clay Team Up For ‘Mr. And Mrs. America’ Comedy Tour
They’ve both been banned by television outlets, so they’re taking their act on the road.
Comedians Roseanne Barr and Andrew Dice Clay will mount the “Mr. and Mrs. America” tour. He was banned for life by MTV for his risque comedy, and she was kicked off her ratings-leading Roseanne show for comments about former White House adviser Valerie Jarrett.

“She’s a comic because she’s wacky,” Clay told Fox News. “I’ve known her since we were kids. When people ask about what she said, I say, ‘She’s a comic!’ We gotta stop policing comedians. This is America!”

Clay said the tour was inspired by the national obsession with political discourse and the policing of comedians’ language. Clay has been ostracized for his homophobic and sexist humor, but has built a career as an actor and still performs stand-up.
Clay and Barr performed together in March at the Laugh Factory in Las Vegas. It was her first performance since being booted off the Roseanne reboot.

“I was given a little flak about this, a little bulls—t, when I pulled her onstage at the Laugh Factory in Vegas, but we’ve been friends for 30 years,” Clay said.

“America really needs to lighten up and not worry about the words comedians use because it’s all we have. There’s clean stuff and there’s street stuff. I’m a street guy because I tell it like it is,” Clay said. “I’m living it more now than I have for a really long time. My shows have been longer, my material is fresher. With these shows, I can do as long as I want because it’s one show a night.”

No dates have been announced for the tour.
