The Daily Buzz For April 9 ☕πŸ“°☕

Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton for Cosmopolitan US - May 2019
Actors Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton cover the May 2019 issue of Cosmopolitan magazine photographed by Eric Ray Davidson. Here are some excerpts from the interview.

Yara Shahidi on how her Grown-ish character, Zoey Johnson, has impacted her life: “I can tell you that I give my friends the best advice, because my character gets into so much trouble. I’m like, ‘Oh yeah, we tried the whole love-triangle thing. Doesn’t work.’”

Yara on her Grown-ish castmates/onscreen love interests, Luka Sabbat and Trevor Jackson: “It’s really funny. I forgot what story I was telling them—it wasn’t anything bad, but somebody wasn’t being the nicest to me, and I think they both offered to fight them on my behalf. I said no—I’m a pacifist! But I appreciated the gesture.”

Charles on being cast in a lead role as an Asian American: “Being an Asian-American lead for a studio film—it almost seems like it’s not real for me, you know? Growing up, I never saw anybody who looked like me, really. So it’s very emotional for me… [After seeing Crazy Rich Asians] I cried seven times. It was just so emotional. Everyone was of Asian descent, and I was like, Wow. And I’m thinking about the movie I did with Yara, and Yara is Iranian and Black. It’s very surreal.”

Charles on falling in love: “I think you can fall in love in the snap of a finger, you know? It all started when I was 13 or 14. Every girl I was with, I thought I was gonna marry… My head’s in the clouds. I’m a dreamer. I’m a hopeless romantic!”

The University of Virginia Cavaliers WIN their first NCAA national title in OT thriller against The Texas Tech Red Raiders!
MINNEAPOLIS -- One year after making history as the first ever No. 1 seed to fall to a No. 16, Virginia has broken through with its program's first-ever national championship. If you ask Tony Bennett, the players on the team or any of the alums in the house in Minneapolis or across the country, I doubt anyone would have things play out any other way.

Virginia's 85-77 overtime win against Texas Tech will go down as one of the best title games in recent memory, eclipsing the doomsday-type editorializing that rolled out in light of these two slowed down, elite defensive teams winning in Saturday's semifinals. When the game started with both teams going a combined 1-for-10 from the field, the jokes started to roll. When the game started to roll back and forth with the lead changing every couple of minutes, no one was complaining about the fact that this game went to overtime.
Congrats!

#RHOA: Looky Looky! Kandi Burruss Celebrates Wedding Anniversary In A Bikini!
Kandi Burruss‘ anniversary getaway with husband Todd Tucker is off to a sizzling start.

On Monday, the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star, who married Tucker in April 2014, shared a few pictures from the couple’s vacation in Phuket, Thailand, which included an excursion with elephants and photoshoot at their villa.

“I absolutely loved our first stop in Thailand. @todd167 picked the best resort ever in #phuketthailand. @sripanwa is amazing! Now we’re headed to #Bangkok. I will post a few more pics from places we visited in Phuket for those of you who are planning trips to #thailand. #5thAnniversary,” Burruss, 42, captioned the collection of Instagram images, which featured a few snaps of the Bravo personality in a yellow bikini.
πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯,” replied Burruss’ “Real Housewives” co-star Eva Marcille.
“Yes abs!!πŸ”₯ Happy anniversary !” posted model pal Claudia Jordan.
As for Tucker, he joked about his beach body shortly after his wife revealed hers.
“That time you took a trip in the spring and your Summer Body wasn’t Ready! Lol! Dad Bodies rule!”

LOL!

#Empire: Recap Calamity Lyon!
It’s time to get the Trust Tour on the road! When a music label deep in debt embarks on a nationwide tour without selling a single ticket, I can’t help but expect a sh— show on wheels. And where the Lyons go, drama is sure to follow, so let’s get to the good stuff, shall we?

Tiana and Treasure’s duet is topping the fictional charts, warranting a TV interview with “Angie on the Mic,” featuring Cookie, as a promotional spot for the upcoming tour. Cookie assures the viewers of Empire’s complete confidence in the tour’s potential success, conveniently leaving out the fact that Lucious is the only executive member who hasn’t at least momentarily wondered if the entire venture was a mistake.

Thurston updates Lucious on the day he spent with the FBI, which sends him spiraling to cover the tracks of Cookie and Damon’s trip to Panama. While going over the details of the “scrubbing” with Cookie and Gisele, he thoughtlessly mentions that he hid the money in his new charity, disguised as a donation. Cookie is livid when she finds out that he’s using the charity they were going to use to “rewrite [their] story” as a method of hiding shady business from the feds. However, she doesn’t have much time to go off on him before Damon Cross storms in demanding to to know why Lucious is contacting his Panama connections without his permission.

Damon explains how he’s going to clean up the “sloppy” job Lucious has done covering their tracks. Lucious isn’t going to stand for this man calling the shots in his office, and Gisele was just enjoying watching these two businessmen fight over whose “ego” is bigger (she was definitely team Damon and thirstier than Cookie or I could stomach).

Elsewhere, the artists of Empire are boarding their busses. It’s only a 2-hour drive to Philly, but it will definitely feel like longer with Carlito’s unwanted sexual advances, Blake and Tiana’s sexual tension (for some reason Hakeem has a private tour bus?), and Maya trying to get everyone to see her as a choreographer and not just an assistant. She bonds with Blake because he’s the only one being nice to her and encourages him to make a move on Tiana. An odd move, considering the look on her face implies that she’s developing her own feelings for Blake.

British artist Winter caught Jamal stalking his ex-fiance’s exes' Instagram. She snatches his phone out of his hand and as he tries to get it back, the millennial in me cringed hoping they don’t accidentally like a picture 82 weeks deep. Winter stresses that he needs to get over Kai and under someone cute, but he isn’t trying to hear it. Jamal may have chosen his family’s ambitions over the ambitions of his heart, but the love clearly hasn’t faded.

Jamal may have chosen his family’s ambitions over the ambitions of his heart, but the love clearly hasn’t faded.

The whole team is annoyed by the critiques of a gossipy, non-binary YouTube personality named Hey Beautiful. They believe the Trust Tour is “crusty nonsense” and that the Empire has become a “trash” brand that’s likely unworthy of even a free price tag. Cookie is suffering through Hey Beautiful’s harsh words when she receives an email from Damon Cross that contains that security camera footage he obtained from the hotel where they stayed in Panama. She’s reminiscing on their time together (to be continued in a sultry wet dream later!) when Gisele interrupts with plans of how to explain away Damon’s visit to Empire if the FBI comes knocking. They’ll claim that they were seeking the help of Damon’s investors to fund the tour and will invite him to the tour’s first stop in Philly for good measure. Of course, Gisele has no problem escorting him there herself. Cookie doesn’t hide her jealousy, and really? It’s getting tacky.

Moments before the dress rehearsal for the first Trust Tour performance, Treasure’s gross ex-manager shows up demanding his cut of the proceeds from Treasure and Tiana’s hit song. His arrival pisses everyone off, but Cookie reminds Lucious that the FBI could be watching him at any moment. Instead of reintroducing Joe to his right hook, Lucious agrees (through gritted teeth) to paying him $30,000 and drafting up a paper that says he’ll never show his face again.

Lucious calls Andre and instructs him to make the money transfer, unaware that his son has just had his first chemo treatment. Teri has hooked him up with a doctor she knew as a nurse, and they’ve recommended a brand of chemo nicknamed “the angel and the devil.” It can stop the growth of his cancer in just weeks, but it could also cause heart problems and tumors. Andre ignores the side effects and is quickly persuaded by the promise of speedy results. Teri doesn’t think he should be doing Lucious’ bidding with this medicine pulsing through his veins, and he’s in the middle of insisting that he’s fine when an aggressive round of nausea literally knocks him off of his feet.

Treasure’s old manager slithering over before the dress rehearsal must have been a bad omen because the actual performance of her duet with Tiana was what nightmares are made of. First, the lights started going haywire. Then, Carlito didn’t even bother to take the stage for his verse (no doubt off somewhere seducing one of the groupies he met outside the venue). The cherry on top of the sh— sundae was Treasure forgetting the dance steps and taking a nosedive off stage, leaving the dancer who tried to catch her holding nothing but a fake ponytail. (Hey Beautiful summed up the “free-asco” with a pretty amazing GIF of her mid-fall.) Understandably embarrassed, Treasure runs away crying and Lucious chases after her.

He finds her crying her eyes out on the tour bus. She says she doesn’t want to continue with the tour, but Lucious persuades her to stay with anecdotes about how he came into his own. It’s a sweet moment that I interpreted as fatherly advice, but Treasure interpreted as advice from a potential zaddy.

It’s a sweet moment that I interpreted as fatherly advice, but Treasure interpreted as advice from a potential zaddy.

The real performance the next day was one thousand times better — at least for Tiana and Treasure. Treasure stayed upright, Carlito actually showed up, and Tiana and Blake got a little closer while dancing on stage, per Maya’s advice. However, when Jamal took the stage, the whole venue blew a fuse. Quick on his feet, Jamal asks the crowd to raise the flashlights on their phones. If the electricity is out, how does his microphone still work, you may ask? I have no idea. Call your electrician. Don’t call me.

He sits down at the piano to sing a love song inspired by his ex-fiance Kai, but becomes too overwhelmed with emotion to continue. Winter comes to his rescue, making the performance a beautiful duet. So beautiful, that it brings Kai to Jamal’s hotel door later that night, and they fall into each other’s arms.

The celebratory after-party leads to more than a couple alcohol-induced bad decisions. Drunk Tiana is dramatically less repulsed by Carlito, which leads to Blake seeing them hooking up in her room. Sauced and sad, Blake ends up in Maya’s room. Treasure, champagne wasted, tries to mount Lucious as a thank you for his kind pep talk. Lucious tries to push her away, but Cookie bursts in the room and explodes when she finds them in a compromising position. Lucious chases after (really getting his steps in this episode), but a rage-filled Cookie can’t be reached.

Thinking Lucious has betrayed her yet again, Cookie is done sacrificing her happiness for his. It’s her turn to be selfish. As she walks to Damon Cross’ hotel room, her mind is lost in flashbacks of all of the awful moments of her relationship with Lucious. When she walks through Damon’s door and lets her fur coat fall to the floor, she walks away from it and the pain Lucious has caused her. Damon’s creepy smile says it all.

While Andre gives in to the chemo fatigue the doctor warned him about, Teri calls Lucious to tell him about Andre’s cancer. Now Lucious is not only stressed about what his wife thinks she saw, but he’s also devastated that his eldest son could be dying. You could say there has never been a more inopportune moment for Treasure’s sleazeball ex-manager to stroll up behind him in the alley behind the concert venue.

Since Andre was never able to send him the money, and Treasure’s second performance was such an improvement, he’s now demanding $50,000 — per month. Lucious lunges at the man and begins smashing his face into the ground, killing him and whatever chance the Lyon family had of a fresh start.

I obviously don’t condone murder, but I can see why Lucious snapped. What do you think?

#HipHopNews: Nipsey Hussle's "Victory Lap" Has Soare To No. 2 On Billboard 200
Nipsey Hussle’s life was cut tragically short when he was shot and killed on March 31 outside of his Los Angeles clothing store. As a result, his Victory Lap debut has returned to the No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200 for the week ending April 4.

Released in February 2018, the Grammy Award-nominated project featured Kendrick Lamar, YG, Puff Daddy, CeeLo Green and The-Dream, among others. It originally debuted at No. 4, selling roughly 53,000 total album equivalent units in its opening week.

Elsewhere on the chart, NAV’s former No. 1 album, Bad Habits, dropped to No. 6, while Drake’s Scorpion returned to the Top 10.
Nine days after Nip’s senseless murder, his debut album is sitting atop of the charts. With 66,497 total album equivalent units, 16,582 pure album sales and a streaming count of 61,682,182, the album has jumped 999 percent to land in the No. 2 spot.

In the wake of his death, his music sales have dramatically increased across the board — from Amazon to iTunes. Nip’s other releases — Crenshaw, The Marathon, Mailbox Money and Slauson Boy 2 — have also re-entered the chart.

The Grammy Award-nominated rapper was gunned down on March 31 after his alleged killer, Eric Holder, walked up to him outside of his Marathon Clothing store and shot him at least six times. Holder has since been arrested for the crime and his bail is set at $5 million.

Jennifer Lopez goes full cowgirl in butt-baring new music video for “Medicine”
In the new music video for her song “Medicine” with French Montana, Jennifer Lopez, 49, goes full “yeehaw couture” — embracing a trend followed by celebs from Solange Knowles to Post Malone lately.

The song kicks off with the newly engaged pop star riding a Pretty Little Thing-sponsored merry-go-round while wearing a rhinestone-, spangle- and feather-bedecked sheer white jumpsuit, complete with fringed white gloves, a white cowboy hat and white high-heeled boots with silver spurs.
Later on in the song, she changes into an elaborately ruffled white dress to play a fortune teller followed by a strut down a cross-shaped catwalk wearing fully fringed and rhinestoned knee-high boots and a black Fausto Puglisi bejeweled gown featuring slits up to her navel, similar versions of which the “Dinero” singer has worn during performances in the past.

But the real scene-stealing moment comes a little over halfway into the song, when the camera cuts to a mirrored ice cave in which J.Lo stands with her back to the camera in a totally bedazzled “Echo Hat” by Heidi Lee (the all-silver version retails for $2,250) and a white structural leotard that fully reveals her most famous asset.
It’s a look that could launch Google image search all over again.

‘The View’ Fans Calls for ABC to “Fire Meghan McCain” After Her “Shameful” Comment to Joy Behar
And Whoopi Goldberg has to shut it all Down!
The View cast members Meghan McCain and Joy Behar found themselves in a tense moment on Monday's show.
Meghan told Joy that she had to "listen to her" as part of her job while discussing immigration and Kirstjen Nielsen.
Whoopi Goldberg quickly broke up the spat and begged the co-hosts to "just let folks talk."
This is the third time Meghan and Joy have gotten heated in the past few weeks.
The View co-hosts Meghan McCain and Joy Behar got into another awkward exchange on Monday's show. But, according to View fans, Meghan's comment to Joy more than crossed the line this time, and now they're demanding that ABC take action.

The feud began after Whoopi Goldberg brought up Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen's resignation over the weekend (Nielsen became known for her defense of the "zero tolerance" policy at the border that led to family separations). Meghan brought up that, being from the border state of Arizona, immigration is a "crisis" in her eyes and a "hardline issue." She went on to say that "if we sit here and act like it isn't a crisis ... that is a winning ticket for Trump [in 2020]."

Joy jumped in to say that she believes the way to solve the problem is to help the countries and their citizens who are suffering. "Give them a house, give them food, help them, help their families," Joy began. But before Joy could finish, Meghan began talking over her, asking "give a Nicaraguan a house?" and declaring that "we've had a bunch of liberal guests [on the show] who do not want to send in aid at all."

Fed up, Joy told Meghan,"I listened to you, let me just finish."
"Yeah, part of your job is to listen to me," Meghan shot back. The crowd immediately started "ooh"-ing, sensing that there was rising tension between the two.
In response, Whoopi quickly intervened to shut down the argument.
"Here's what's not going to happen today, we're not going to do this. Everybody gets a conversation piece, everybody gets to say their peace," Whoopi declared. "And we don't need to comment, if we don't like what we're hearing. Just let folks talk."

When Whoopi motioned to Joy to finish what she was saying, Joy said she had "forgotten" her point.
Over on Twitter, it's clear that the tense moment did not sit well with View fans watching at home. Many thought Meghan's comment to Joy was "disrespectful," "wrong," and "shameful." Many went as far as saying that Meghan, who joined the The View in October 2017, should "have to go" after her remark.
This marks Joy and Meghan's third spat in recent weeks. In late March, Joy took a dig at Meghan when she basically revealed to everyone that the two fight backstage, making it seem as though she got along with former conservative co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck a lot better. And just last week, Meghan erupted on Joy while talking about presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg.

Will things get better between the two co-hosts? If they haven't already made peace behind the cameras!

DEVELOPING NOW: Felicity Huffman Pleads Guilty In College Bribery Case
Facing a potential sentence of five years behind bars, Felicity Huffman today has entered a guilty plea in the college bribery scheme.
Law enforcement plans to push for some prison time for the American Crime actor, sources tell Deadline, as reported last week.

While Full House star Lori Loughlin and her fashion designer have not yet entered at plea, the the U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts also unveiled on Monday that Beverly Hill-based marketing boss Jane Buckingham put a guilty plea in the federal docket too.

A Divorce For Wendy Williams May Reveal Money Spent On Alleged Mistress
If they divorce, Wendy Williams will find out just how much money Kevin Hunter, her husband of 22 years, has spent on his mistress.

We revealed that Sharina Hudson, Hunter’s alleged mistress, gave birth last month. There is speculation that he is the father and this could signal the end of Williams’ marriage, although they have not officially split nor started any divorce proceedings.

A top divorce lawyer told us, “If Kevin is this baby’s father, it affects things. If he spent a lot of money on this woman, a judge can concede that’s a wasteful dissipation [spending marital funds in a frivolous manner].”
Williams and Hunter both own Wendy Williams Productions, which makes her hit show. He is also her longtime manager. A divorce could force them to break up the company, the attorney said.

“One would likely buy the other out as part of a divorce settlement.”
This week, Hunter upgraded Williams’ watch with 25 carats of diamonds and is known for his spending.
The lawyer added: “Obscene spending that the wife knows about is just too bad for her. Obscene spending that has been hidden could signal a wasteful dissipation.”

Williams — still said to be living in a sober facility in Queens — is due back on the set Monday.

Issa Rae fears being unfairly labeled a ‘difficult black woman’
Issa Rae is becoming a household name but still faces problems with stereotypes.
The “Insecure” creator, 34, revealed over the weekend she sometimes has to change her language in order to not be unfairly labeled as mean or difficult.

“I have to sugarcoat because I know that the environment I’m in will label me as the angry or difficult black woman,” Rae explained during a Beautycon panel discussion called “Black Girl Magic on the Big Screen,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“It is frustrating, at times, to feel like you have to constantly work on how you’re going to present something, so you are able to work again in the future,” she explained.
Rae, who co-stars along with Regina Hall and Marsai Martin in the new comedy “Little,” revealed that it was great working with all black women on the project.
“I love working with vocal black women … opinionated black women,” she said. “I understand it’s not coming from a place of disrespectful bullying. It’s coming from a place of ‘I know what I want.’ And there’s nothing more refreshing than that.”

Rae has been making the rounds lately, promoting “Little” and talking about fitness. However, she has yet to confirm her engagement to longtime boyfriend Louis Diame.

Kim Kardashian Accused Of Cultural Appropriation AGAIN After Wearing Indian Culture Headpiece In “Sunday Service”!
Kim Kardashian and her family are known for “borrowing” styles from various cultures and profiting off of them in some way, and the habit has once again brought backlash to Kim after she posted a photo to her Instagram in a traditional Indian hair accessory with the caption, “Sunday Service Vibe.” Social media wasn’t quite feeling the look though.

One IG user said in Kim’s comments, “Keep to your own and stop stealing others cultures and their ideas and making them your own” Another user wrote, “So no one’s gonna call out Kim Kardashian on cultural appropriation for wearing Indian jewelry but when it comes to a non-black person wearing dreadlocks, the Internet goes up in flames.”

The headpiece that Kim was wearing in the photo is a Maang Tikka, head jewelry traditionally worn by Indian brides but can also be worn by women for any special occasion. People questioned Kim’s knowledge of what she was wearing, commenting, “Ummm where’s the Indian inspiration credit, do you even know what your wearing on your forehead is called???”
Many within the Indian community (and others) have found the “stylizing” of ethnicity and cultural elements as problematic, and it is not the first time Kardashian has found herself at the center of critical attention regarding appropriation. Remember the “Bo Derek Braids?”

How do you feel about cultural symbols being misrepresented in fashion?

Nipsey Hussle Memorial Service: Rapper's Funeral Will Not Be A Ticketed Event
Planning for Nipsey Hussle’s memorial service is underway, but contrary to earlier reports, tickets will not be sold to the event.
Media maven and Hussle’s friend Karen Civil shared details of the rapper’s upcoming funeral on Twitter on Saturday.
“I want to officially let @NipseyHussle fans & supporters know there will be NO selling of tickets to his funeral,” she wrote.

A TMZ report claimed Hussle’s service was planned to be held at Los Angeles’ Staples Center, as the memorial is expected to attract thousands. The arena, home to the Los Angeles Lakers NBA team and the NHL's L.A. Kings, can hold up to 21,000 people.
The report said tickets would be sold online for an undisclosed price through an unidentified website, and only ticketholders would gain access to the service, which was reportedly scheduled for Thursday. However, Civil disputed those claims.

“A lot of incorrect information was released today, please know in the upcoming days and [sic] official statement will be made soon,” she wrote.
Regardless of when or where Hussle’s memorial is held, the funeral service is likely to be flooded with fans and spectators. In cities all across the U.S., hundreds of people have gathered together and held vigils honoring the West Coast rapper’s legacy.
In addition to being a successful rap artist, the Grammy nominee was also a prominent figure in his Los Angeles community and invested much of the fortune earned from his music back into the neighborhood he grew up in.
“He was a brother, a musician, an entrepreneur, a people’s champ,” Samiel Asghedom, Hussle’s older brother, said in his first interview with ABC News following Hussle’s death. “He was somebody that believed in the process of hard work, determination and just the positivity of somebody staying in the area that he grew up in and making something out of nothing…he was a role model to the community, to the kids, and to the mothers and grandmothers and the community that watched him grow up and seen him as a youngster, (and now) a family man, a father, raising his kids.”

The father-of-two was shot outside of his retail store, Marathon Clothing, in the Hyde Park area of Los Angeles on March 31. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. Two other men were also hit by bullets but survived the incident
