Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott Continues Unprecedented Giving with $42 Million Donation to HBCU

MacKenzie Scott has made yet another historic donation to an historically Black college and university (HBCU). This time, Elizabeth City State University, a small public HBCU in North Carolina, received $42 million from the philanthropist.
“I want to express our deepest gratitude to MacKenzie Scott for this remarkable act of generosity and for her recognition of the critical role that HBCUs play in expanding opportunity and strengthening communities,” said ECSU Chancellor S. Keith Hargrove, Sr. in a statement. “Her investment affirms what we already know: that institutions like ECSU are powerful catalysts for change.”
Hargrove, who announced the donation during the school's 135th anniversary Founders Day Convocation, said the money will be instrumental in the implementation of the University's five-year strategic plan ASCEND 2030.
The gift was almost triple what ECSU received from Ms. Scott in 2020, according to a press release from the University.
The gift was also the largest dollar per student enrolled gift of any HBCU among Ms. Scott’s recent gifts, including the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, which received $38 million from Scott in 2025.
Scott has made headlines in recent months for her unprecedented philanthropy, which last year exceeded the giving of several of the most prominent United States billionaires over the course of their lives — combined.
In 2025 alone, Scott, 55, donated an estimated $7.2 billion to 186 organizations, according to Forbes, which went on to report that's the most money gifted in a single year since the publication began tracking top donors in 2012.
The secretive nature of Scott's giving is the subject of a recent Wall Street Journal report that claims that Scott will often send a furtive unmarked email, or make a brief 15 minute phone call, before wiring over millions of dollars.
"It took my breath away,” said Heidi M. Anderson, president of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, a historically Black school, almost missed an opportunity to connect with Scott when she received several emails from an unknown sender in 2020, according to the Journal.
Now, with Scott's $42 million donation, ECSU Chancellor Hargrove said the University will have momentum to "move boldly toward the future while remaining grounded in the mission that has guided us for 135 years.”
WNBA, players' union reach verbal agreement on new CBA terms
NEW YORK -- After a prolonged labor battle, the WNBA and Women's National Basketball Players Association reached a verbal agreement on the terms of a new collective bargaining agreement early Wednesday, just 51 days before the league's 30th season is set to tip off.
Under the new CBA, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania, the salary cap will start at $7 million (up from $1.5 million in 2025) with the supermax starting at $1.4 million (was $249,244 in 2025). The average salary will be around $600,000 ($120,000 in 2025), with the minimum salary surpassing $300,000 ($66,079 in 2025), sources said.
Sources said the average revenue share would be nearly 20% across the length of the deal.
A formal term sheet still needs to be finalized, and the agreement is pending ratification by the players and the WNBA board of governors.
"The progress made in these discussions marks a transformative step forward for players and the league," WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert told reporters shortly before 3 a.m. ET, "and it's underscoring a shared commitment to the continued growth of the game.
"It's [been] a process, but we're very proud to be leading in women's sports, and these players are amazing, and we're going to have an amazing 30th season tipping off in May."
Engelbert, WNBPA executive director Terri Carmichael Jackson and four members of the WNBPA executive committee -- president Nneka Ogwumike, vice presidents Breanna Stewart and Alysha Clark and treasurer Brianna Turner -- shared the news with reporters in the lobby of The Langham hotel in midtown Manhattan, where they began their 100-plus hours of marathon bargaining sessions a week prior.
"I think this can be summed up in two words: player empowerment ... players coming to the table and standing on business and being reminded of the collective voice and of what it means to be in a union and the power of this union," Jackson said. "They never forgot it, and they have taken it, like they always do, to the next level."
Engelbert said the extended negotiations avoided any changes to the 2026 schedule. Training camp is set to open April 19, followed by preseason games beginning April 25 and the start of the regular season on May 8.
The exact proceedings for the rest of the offseason calendar were not announced, although the league must still hold a two-team expansion draft and free agency for more than 100 players once the deal is ratified.
Dates that had been provided to teams in late February, according to a source, set the expansion draft for April 6 and free agency April for 7-18.
The college draft is scheduled for April 13.
This will be the sixth CBA in league history following deals in 1999, 2003, 2008, 2014 and 2020.
"We're just really grateful to be able to come to a deal," Ogwumike said. "We're proud of ourselves. And quite frankly, we always told you all we were going to stand on business, and that's what this looks like."
The agreement is poised to reflect the league's skyrocketing growth and popularity, with viewership, attendance and investment reaching historic levels in the past few years.
"For the first time player salaries are tied to a truly meaningful share of league revenue, driving exponential growth in the salary cap, increasing average compensation beyond half a million dollars and raising the standard across facilities, staffing and support," Ogwumike said in a statement.
Ogwumike told reporters that players will come into the league "and not [have] a sense of lack."
"This deal is going to be transformational," Stewart said. "It's going to build and help create a system where everybody is getting exactly what they deserve and more, from on the court and off the court aspects. Just excited that we can tell our fans that we're going to be back."
The verbal agreement comes 17 months after the players opted out of the previous CBA in October 2024 and five months after the former deal was initially set to expire in October 2025. Talks often became contentious over the past eight months, and concern grew in recent weeks as both sides remained seemingly far apart that the season could be impacted.

But after a week of intense in-person bargaining, both sides were finally able to share a moment of celebration at The Langham, enjoying glasses of champagne together in their main conference meeting room as Clark gave an emotional toast, with both parties saluting the league's present and future.
"What we just accomplished is going to change the lives of so many players," Clark said. "And speaking from experience, players like me are going to be the ones that I think feel it the most, and that's what I think we're all super proud of, because that's what we set out from the beginning, was making sure every player felt the change in the CBA, and that's exactly what has happened."
Engelbert called the deal "a fair win-win for all," while Jackson added, "Cathy and her team understood that the players' wins were the league's wins and that our stories of success are shared stories of success, period."
"I really feel like a lot of what we were at the table for was for the next generation," Ogwumike said. "When we consider the next 10 years, this is really going to continue to catapult us."

Jury Decides Afroman Case Over Viral Video: Rapper Wins

Afroman faced a jury verdict in his lawsuit with Ohio sheriff’s deputies over his viral “Lemon Pound Cake” music video.
Afroman came out on top after facing a jury verdict today after Adams County sheriff’s deputies sued him over his viral “Lemon Pound Cake” music video.
A jury ruled in favor of the colorful rapper, and affirmed that he did not defame seven police officers.
Afroman held his hands up in triumph after the verdict was read, and thanked his lawyer David Osborne, who defended him during the trial..
The lawsuit stems from a 2020 raid on his Ohio home where deputies allegedly damaged his property, breaking his front gate and causing other destruction.
Rather than accept the loss, Afroman created a song and music video using surveillance footage from the raid to document what happened and recover his losses.
The deputies claim the video and its publicity subjected them to ridicule, mental distress, and danger, including anonymous death threats.
They’re also accusing him of making false statements in the track.
According to local reporting, the trial wrapped on Wednesday morning after starting Monday, and the jury began deliberating before noon.
What’s important here is that Afroman was never charged with any crimes following the raid. He created the song as a response to what he saw as unjustified property damage.
The deputies’ lawsuit represents an attempt to silence his artistic expression and hold him financially liable for their emotional distress.
This case touches on broader questions about free speech and artistic expression that Hip-Hop artists have been fighting for decades.
The seven plaintiffs are seeking significant damages.
Lisa Phillips is asking for $1.5 million, while Brian Newland and Randy Walters each want $1 million.
The remaining four plaintiffs, Shawn Grooms, Shawn Cooley, Justin Cooley, and Mike Estep, are collectively seeking $400,000.
These numbers represent what the deputies’ legal team believes is appropriate compensation for their suffering.

Rihanna & A$AP Rocky Spotted w/ Heavy Security In First Joint Outing Since Home Shooting

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky are doing what they can to stay safe. The couple has been spotted out together for the first time since the frightening shooting at Rihanna’s California home. Paparazzi captured them in #NewYorkCity, surrounded by heavy security as they exited a Manhattan building and quickly made their way into a waiting SUV.
The sighting comes after a woman allegedly opened fire on Rihanna’s $14 million residence while she, Rocky, and their three young children were on the property. The suspect, quickly identified as Ivanna Ortiz, 35, was arrested and later charged with attempted murder along with multiple firearm-related offenses. During the incident, bullets reportedly struck the home’s security gate and an Airstream trailer where the family had been at the time.
Ortiz, who appeared in court shortly after her arrest, could face life in prison if convicted. Prosecutors also allege she fired at another nearby home during the incident. Despite the terrifying situation, no injuries were reported, though the ordeal has clearly prompted heightened security measures for the famous couple since the attack.

ICYMI ... Remy is planning to release a film called "The Biggest Boss" on her platform, The Remy Network. Now -- according to a letter sent by Ross's attorneys and obtained by TMZ -- Rick is claiming the project features the unauthorized use of his music and trade name and demanding they halt the project from going forward.
Not only that ... Ross says it's confusing fans into thinking he has something to do with the movie, citing comments on social media.
A rep for Remy Ma tells TMZ ... "Remy was personally unaware of the concerns raised regarding 'The Biggest Boss' and takes the matter seriously. She has maintained a personal and professional relationship with Rick Ross for more than 20 years and would never intentionally engage in any action that could harm his brand or cause offense."
The film is apparently about a police officer who steals a drug dealer's life story and turns it into a rap career ... eerily similar to Ross' own backstory of being a correctional-officer-turned-rapper. Some fans online have speculated the project may have been an act of retribution for Remy ... as Ross has been very supportive of fighter Claressa Shields, who is currently dating Remy's ex-husband.
But Remy's reps say, "[Remy] has also reached out to [Ross] directly. Upon being made aware of the issue, the title was immediately removed from the platform. The Remy Network is now working closely with its partners to strengthen review processes and ensure that situations like this do not occur moving forward."

Joseph was charged in connection with a child sexual abuse case involving a then-9-year-old girl, who was on vacation with her family in Panama City Beach, Florida in 2020.
The alleged sexual abuse occurred when Joseph allegedly asked the victim to sit on his lap.
“As the vacation continued, he also asked her to sit next to him on a couch and covered them with a blanket,” Bay County Sheriff’s Office said. “During this time, Duggar manipulated the victim’s underwear and grazed her genitals. Duggar would also continue to rub his hands on her thighs.”
“The victim stated Duggar eventually apologized for his actions and the incidents stopped after the apology,” the office added.
The arrest was a result of the now-14-year-old victim participating in a forensic interview regarding a report of past sexual abuse. The victim’s father confronted Joseph about the incidents and the former TLC star “allegedly admitted his actions to the father and Tontitown detectives.”
Joseph‘s arrest comes his older brother Josh Duggar was convicted of receiving and possessing child pornography in 2022. He was first arrested in 2021.
Josh, who has maintained his innocence, was ultimately sentenced to 12 years in prison. However, his sentence has since been extended.
If you didn’t know, Joseph has been married to wife Kendra since 2017 and they share son Garrett, born in 2018, and daughters Addison, born in 2019, and Brooklyn, born in 2021. They seemingly have a fourth child, though they have no publicly confirmed.
If you or someone you know has been a victim of sexual abuse, text “STRENGTH” to the Crisis Text Line at 741-741 to be connected to a certified crisis counselor.

Shonda Rhimes Speaks Out After 'Grey's Anatomy' Star Eric Dane is Excluded from Oscars 2026 In Memoriam

Shonda Rhimes is reacting to the Academy’s decision to not include Eric Dane in the In Memoriam segment at the 2026 Oscars.
During the awards show held on Sunday (March 15), the late Grey’s Anatomy actor was one the many stars that were noticeably absent from the memorial segment dedicated to stars who passed away in the last year, including moving tributes to Rob and Michele Reiner, Diane Keaton and Robert Redford.
As she arrived at the Vanity Fair after-party following the Oscars, Shonda, 56, defended the Academy for excluding Eric.
“Well, he’s not a movie star, you know?” Shonda told Entertainment Tonight. “And I feel like when the Emmys come around, he will be [immortalized] the way he should be.”
“We can’t fault the Oscars for the fact that they’re looking at movies,” she continued. “And there were so many people who were lost, but Eric was unique to television and I can’t wait to see what they do with him [at the Emmys].”
While Eric might be best known for playing Dr. Mark Sloan, aka McSteamy, on Grey’s Anatomy, he does have 19 movie credits to his name, including 2006′s X-Men: The Last Stand, 2008′s Marley & Me, 2010′s Valentine’s Day, and 2024′s Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
If you didn’t see the sad news, Eric died on February 19, nearly one year after he announced that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He was 53-years-old.

Angie Stone’s Children Forced to Sell Her Home Due to Overwhelming Costs

*It has been just over a year since the music world lost the iconic voice of Angie Stone, and now her family is preparing to say goodbye to the physical space she called home. The neo-soul artist, known for timeless hits like “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” and “No More Rain (In This Cloud),” passed away suddenly on March 1, 2025, at the age of 63, following a tragic car accident in Montgomery, Alabama.
Her death left her children, Diamond Stone and Michael Archer II, to manage her estate—a task that has proven both emotionally and financially complex. As of March 2026, that journey has reached a bittersweet milestone: listing the family’s Atlanta-area home for $670,000.
Located in the serene golf course community of Locust Grove, the residence at 6009 Golf View Xing is far from a standard celebrity estate. It is a spacious, all-brick ranch home sitting proudly on a desirable corner lot. The timeless brick construction offers a sense of permanence and stability—qualities that have been hard to come by for the Stone family over the last year.
According to the Zillow listing, the property is an “expansive” haven spanning 5,912 square feet. It features 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms, providing the kind of space where a family could grow and gather. The functional layout flows seamlessly, and for car enthusiasts or those with simply a need for ample storage, the home boasts a rare 4-car garage.
The listing notes that the home has undergone a “soft renovation,” offering a refreshed foundation while leaving room for a new owner to inject their “personal vision and design touches.” Priced at $670,000, it represents a chance for someone to own a piece of Georgia heritage while finishing the story the Stone family must now leave behind.
The decision to list the property is deeply intertwined with the financial realities following Angie Stone’s death. Prior to her passing, Stone had publicly alleged that she was owed significant sums from past publishing deals and royalty agreements—a common struggle for many legacy R&B artists.
Following her death, her children reportedly found themselves unable to access these funds due to the complex nature of royalty collections and estate probate. Without that expected income stream, maintaining the mortgage on a nearly 6,000-square-foot home became untenable.
In the chaotic weeks immediately following her passing, Diamond Stone faced public scrutiny after making a request for donations via Cash App to cover funeral costs and pressing household expenses. Today, the sale of the family home is the next logical—though heartbreaking—step to settle those debts while the fight for Angie’s musical legacy continues in the courts.
The Fight for Justice: Details Emerge in Wrongful Death Lawsuit
Complicating the family’s grief is an active wrongful death lawsuit filed in September 2025 against the trucking company involved in the crash. According to court filings, the lawsuit provides harrowing details about Stone’s final moments.
The suit alleges that the driver lost control of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van carrying Stone and her bandmates following a performance in Mobile, Alabama. The vehicle veered off the roadway and overturned on I-65, coming to rest in the left lane. Critically, the lawsuit states that Stone and the other occupants survived the initial rollover and that passersby had stopped to help five of the nine occupants crawl out of the disabled van .
As Stone was still trying to escape, an 18-wheeler carrying a load of sugar slammed into the stationary van at nearly 70 miles per hour without braking. The impact ejected Stone and pinned her under the van, where she died. The lawsuit further alleges that the truck driver was distracted, wearing headphones, and that the vehicle’s collision avoidance system was defective and failed to detect the van lying in the interstate.
Filed by Diamond Stone, Michael D’Angelo Archer, and crash survivor Sheila Hopkins, the suit names the truck driver, trucking company CRST, manufacturer Daimler Truck, and others, seeking wrongful death and punitive damages.
The situation surrounding Angie Stone’s estate is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of artists’ families. While the children continue to fight for the royalties their mother was owed—and pursue accountability through the wrongful death lawsuit—selling the family home has become a necessary step to settle immediate debts.
As Diamond Stone and Michael Archer II navigate the complexities of preserving their mother’s legacy, their struggle has reignited a necessary conversation about how the music industry compensates veteran artists and protects their families after they are gone. The walls of that all-brick ranch hold decades of memories, but for now, the financial realities of the music business are forcing a bittersweet goodbye.
