A Salute to 5 Powerful Women: Jennifer Lopez, Donatella Versace, Kate Moss, Taraji P. Henson, and Jessica Chastain for W Magazine!
W's March 2017 cover stars Donatella Versace, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lopez, Taraji P. Henson, and Kate Moss come from diverse backgrounds but share the drive to “own” who they are, and to advocate for women in their respective professions.

Tarji P. Henson proves that age truly ain’t nothing but a number as she dominates the latest cover of W Magazine. As if Taraji P. Henson on one magazine cover wasn’t enough, the issue actually includes a total of 5 cover stars. Joining J. Lo and Cookie is fashion priestess Donatella Versace legendary supermodel Kate Moss, and award winning actress Jessica Chastain. Lensed by fashion wonder boys Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott and styled by Fashion Director, Edward Enninful, this is one insanely hot cover story.
On the cover, the 5 women pose in a powerful group portrait styled in sexy all black Versace looks. Inside the issue each woman gets her own time in front of the camera.

Taraji P. Henson channels her inner Cookie Lyon for her images. Styled in a black Lanvin mini-dress, Henson smolders in a glamorous beauty image. The scene is cinematic. A real parallel to to the life of 47 year-old Taraji P. Henson today who group up in a rough part of Washington D.C. The Hidden Figures actress also opens up and discusses everything from being a single mother to being considered a late bloomer. “This is the life I always saw for myself,” she says. “You have to see yourself inside the dream, you know? Why you gonna do something to fail? No, baby, that ain’t me! I always wanted to be one of the big dogs,” she adds.

Henson also comments on the current conditions for black women in film. “I don’t know. It’s been great for me! I own six properties, I’m out of the hood, and my son don’t know the hood.” she reflects. “Now, have they put all the zeroes on my check that I deserve? That’s the question, but not even for me because I don’t write the checks. I just keep working hard, knowing it will come.” she continues.

#RHoA: Shade: Kandi Burruss Says Phaedra Parks Should Be Downgraded
Kandi Burruss was a co-host on The Real on Friday and while she was there, she used the opportunity to throw major shade at Phaedra Parks. The Real Housewives of Atlanta star claims that Phaedra doesn’t deserve to hold a peach anymore. Burruss charged that Parks has no storyline, no husband, and not even a boyfriend and that she should be listed as a friend of the cast rather than a full cast member.
It all started when Jeannie Mai pulled up some tea from the comments section of Kandi Burruss’ Facebook. Underneath a preview for an upcoming RHOA episode that Kandi posted, someone wrote a comment that said, “So over Kandi and her rude behavior. She doing anything for a paycheck and keep using Phaedra name as a storyline.”

Jeannie asked Kandi if she wanted to “hit reply” on that comment and naturally, Kandi offered up a comment. She wanted to let the RHOA fan who shaded her know that she doesn’t have to film the Bravo hit in order to collect a check. Kandi then suggested that anyone questioning her net worth do a quick google search on her to verify that she has multiple checks coming in and she does.

Don’t forget that Kandi Burruss was a successful recording artist and songwriter long before joining the RHOA cast. Not only did she sing alongside Tiny Harris in Xscape, but she also penned hits for superstars like Beyonce, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Pink, and more.

After reminding everyone watching The Real that she is wealthy without the Real Housewives of Atlanta, Kandi went on to question why and how she would use Phaedra for a storyline. It can be assumed that they meant all the drama Kandi has been dealing with over the Porsha Williams kiss and the alleged affair with her friend Shamea Morton. It’s no secret that Porsha and Phaedra are best buds, having earned the nickname “Frick and Frack.” Due to that, Phaedra has also spent the season taking shots at Kandi after all the drama so it’s actually safer to say that Phaedra might be using Kandi for a storyline.

“I don’t see a boyfriend, I don’t see any work getting done. I don’t see nothing. I saw one charity event, but other than that, it’s like a friend of the show at this point.”
It looks like Phaedra Parks and Porsha Williams have been giving Kandi Burruss a hard time all season on Real Housewives of Atlanta, but that doesn’t stop her from taking a few jabs as well.

Aside from beefing with Kandi Burruss on Season 9 of RHOA, Phaedra Parks has been dealing with the fallout from divorcing Apollo Nida and some of that is supposed to play out on the show as well. To beef up Phaedra’s anemic story, Bravo producers brought in Apollo’s new fiance, Sherien Almufti. There was even a bit of drama with Almufti when her ex started complaining about her pulling their child out of school to go film in Atlanta with the RHOA camera crews. He also voiced his anger over Sherien taking their daughter to prison to visit with Apollo Nida.
It seems that if Phaedra Parks did want to add a little energy to her storyline, now that her divorce from Apollo Nida is final, she needs to go find a new man. The Kandi Burruss lesbian affair drama is played out and it really does look like she is using Kandi for ratings rather than sharing her own life.

Do you agree with Kandi Burruss?

Hip Hop History: Brand Nubian Drops ‘In God We Trust’ 24 Years Ago
This week in 1993, Brand Nubian released their sophomore album, In God We Trust on Elektra Records as a follow up to their five mic classic All For One.

With Grand Puba embarking on a solo career and a year into the success of his Reel to Reel album, Sadat X and Lord Jamar kept it all mathematical, dropping the science taught by the 5% Nation, which was the original objective of the four man squad from New Rochelle, New York. Whether they were proudly saluting the 5% by singing their rendition of the Nation’s anthem”The Enlightener”, police brutality “Black and Blue” or just beating down punks “Punks Jump Up”, the Native Tongues affiliates always bring their lyrical A game to the table when it’s time to go in the booth.

HOLLA BACK HERE:
Salute to Sadat and Lord J for this timeless classic!

Lil Mo Speaks Out About Getting Fired: ‘I Tried To Be Harriet Tubman’
Lil Mo is speaking out after she was fired from her morning show gig at 93.9 WKYS.
In a post on her Instagram page, Mo said, “When God removes YOU don’t you ever question, just GO!!!!!”

She went on to say she “tried to be Harriet Tubman,” but she was in a toxic situation.
Alhamdulillah for everything. You think you know. But let ME tell it!! When God removes YOU don’t you ever question, just GO!!!!! People wish they could escape but they are stuck. And that is what makes situations TOXIC!! I tried to be Harriet Tubman and sh*t because I listened to the daily woes and how much they would complain. Yet they stay. πŸ˜” in that I realized some things are ALL some people have. I talk to God ALOT. Like how I talk to YOU. I be cussin and I say OOPS sorry you know my ❤️. My truest ambition is to help and to sing. I had to choose. Thank you @mznatina for saving me from doing something DUMB. πŸ˜˜πŸ˜˜ thanks to all that reached out.
Thanks to my past, you didn’t break me. You PUSHED me to be better. I use to be sooooo scared of success. It is not measured by what one has but it is what one is willing to sacrifice. I became complacent with a JOB to have legit paperwork. But NOTHING I’ve acquired came from that. I was and will always be LIL MO. That’s my REAL job. I accept and am actually relieved by the fact someone leaked an email that was supposed to be confidential. That goes to show I was amongst πŸ€πŸ€. I would NEVER leak what I have in my possession. But I will damn sure send to someone else to 🀣. Nah but in reality it’s time for me to level up. I’m NO fool. I’ve been through worse, from greater.. I’m actually wiser than I even give myself credit for. I have an amazing heart and great ideas. Believe me, you will be peeking. Numbers don’t lie. Love always, Meezy πŸ˜˜

Keshia Knight Pulliam Says A Hospital Worker Mistook Her As A Mother In Need After Giving Birth
Recently we all learned that actress Keshia Knight Pulliam gave birth to her baby girl Ella Grace.
The actress talked about her labor and delivery experience during a new episode of her podcast “Kandidly Keisha.”

According to E News, while speaking about her experience, she talked about how a lactation specialist had mistaken her for a mother that was in need after giving birth to her baby girl.
She said, “Bless this old little lady’s heart. This old little white lady…she’s like about 70 years old.”
Keshia pointed out that the specialist handed her a pamphlet, which is a part of the hospitals standard procedure for new mothers. However, she said that the specialist turned to a certain page that listed about 30 different numbers and resources for mothers.

Keshia felt offended when the specialist said, “Yes we have some great programs that you may want to take advantage of that you may need. Um, WIC is a great program. I don’t know if you have insurance.”

Keshia then continued, “So I guess she saw this little black girl with the little baby by herself and on the door, I didn’t realize that they’d put like a faux last name and the last name was Brown. So I guess she saw ‘Miss Brown’ and was like, She probably needs some WIC.'”

She then stopped the lady and let her know that she has excellent insurance.
“I get it, it’s about showing the services that are offered. And I probably wouldn’t have been offended had she [pointed out] several of the services [and not just] WIC and the fact that ‘if you don’t have insurance,” said Pulliam.

Needless to say, her doula was also on hand following the delivery and requested another lactation specialist, after she claims the first specialist didn’t want to touch her to show her how to properly breastfeed her baby.

Martellus Bennett Says He Will Not Visit The White House To Celebrate The Patriots Victory
Patriots fans are still celebrating after the team quickly turned the game around, taking home the winning title.
We all know that all teams who win the Super Bowl will get the chance to visit the White House to celebrate with the sitting president. However, one player who does not plan on attending is Martellus Bennett.
According to The Huffington Post, Bennett said during a post game interview, “I’m not going to go.”

When asked why he wouldn’t make the visit with his team, he said, “It is what it is. People know how I feel about it. Just follow me on Twitter.” Last week he tweeted, “America was built on inclusiveness not exclusiveness.”
The teams owner, Robert Kraft, the head coach Bill Belichick and star quarterback Tom Brady have been known to be friendly with Donald Trump in the past. Nonetheless, Bennett said he is, “not really worried about that.”
He also talked about not bringing politics into the locker room as well, but he was more interested in celebrating his teams Super Bowl win.

#RHoA: Kandi Burruss Posts Cute Collage For Her Baby Son's Birthday
Happy birthday to little Ace! Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss took to Instagram to celebrate a special family moment. The 40-year-old's little boy, Ace Wells Tucker, turned one — and the reality star couldn't resist sharing a sweet collage to ring in his birthday.
"[Ace] has brought so much joy to my life," she wrote. "Seeing him brightens up my day everyday. I can't believe it's been a year already!"

Ace is the first child for the star and her husband, Todd Tucker. The star is also mom to daughter Riley, 14, and Todd is dad to daughter Kaela, 20.
When the little one joined the reality family last year, the proud parents gushed over their miracle baby and revealed that they “went over a lot of hurdles to conceive” him using IVF.
“We really worked hard for Ace,” Kandi said. Looks like he was worth the wait!

HUH? Taraji P Henson Doesn’t Want Hidden Figures To Be Labeled A ‘Black’ Movie
Hidden Figures stars Taraji P Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae cover Parade Magazine’s January issue. The powerful three star together as three brilliant African-American women who break gender and race lines while serving as the brains behind John Glenn‘s launch into space – but they do not want the film to be labeled as a “black movie.”
“It’s a label — a bad label,” Taraji told the mag. “Black people understand what we say when we say ‘black movie,’ but Hollywood cannot put that label on it. Yes, they are brilliant African-American females, and all of that should be celebrated. No matter what your color is, you should be able to look at these women as heroes. These are our new superheroes.”
“This movie is important because sisterhood is important. I don’t think these women — Katherine, Mary and Dorothy— would have accomplished such an extraordinary thing if they didn’t have the support of each other,” Janelle added.

Do you agree with Taraji? I don’t.

New Music from Bell Biv Devoe Feat. SWV – Finally
The ultimate ’90s collabo has finally happened! Bell Biv DeVoe have released their latest single “Finally” and it features fellow ’90s R&B icons, SWV.  Opposite of their Biggie inspired single, “Run,” “Finally” is a sweet ballad about finding love that lasts. Reminiscent of the ’90s with a 2017 twist, old and new school fans will dig this feel good groove.

Ricky and Coco pledge devotion to each other as he sings to her, “You give me everything so I’mma give you more … when you Finally get it right …that’s how it feels when I’m with you.” She responds with her signature lilt, “You are so secure and I mean that / Some reciprocation is all that I’ve been missing / I’ve found myself in you … I’d be proud to say  ‘I do…”
This is definitely a dope marketing move by both groups as they are currently on tour together. The New Edition three-day biopic is set to start airing on BET January 24 and BBD’s first album in 15 years Three Stripes, is due out on January 27.  SWV was profiled on the season premiere of TV One’s “Unsung” this past Wednesday (Jan. 4).

“Finally” is available on iTunes now. Stream it HERE via Spotify.

Box Office News: ‘Hidden Figures’ Comes in at a STRONG #2
Domestic weekend estimates are in, but the full story won't be told until actuals arrive Monday afternoon as the top two films are within a mere fraction of one another as severe winter weather had a clear effect on this weekend's grosses. For the time being Rogue One: A Star Wars Story holds the top spot over Fox's expanded release of Hidden Figures by less than $200,000.

Hidden Figures expanded nationwide this weekend into 2,471 theaters (+2,446) and finished with an impressive $21.8 million. One factor contributing to the questions surrounding not only its weekend gross, but the weekend gross for all films in release, is several theaters in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Virginia and parts of the Deep South either closed early yesterday or shut down completely as a result of severe winter weather. Nevertheless, Hidden Figures is off to an excellent start and its future looks bright after receiving an "A+" CinemaScore from Friday audiences and a 5/5 from PostTrak. The films demographic breakdown as 64% female vs. 36% male with 56% of the audience coming in under the age of 35. Additionally, 43% of the audience was Caucasian, 37% African American and 13% Hispanic.

The Full List is as follows
1 Rogue One: A Star Wars Story$21,972,000
2 Hidden Figures $21,800,000
3 Sing $19,573,670
4 Underworld : Blood  $13,100,000
5 La La Land $51,656,587
6 Passengers (2016)  $80,893,043

8 Moana  $225,394,182  -
9 Fences $40,663,264

Mariah Carey’s Former Creative Director Speaks Out About Reports Saying He Was Fired Over Mimi’s NYE Performance.
On January 4th, ET has learned that the “Emotions” singer is no longer working with her longtime creative director and tour choreographer/dancer, Anthony Burrell.
“He’s not being brought back [in 2017] for a number of reasons,” a source close to Carey told ET on Tuesday. The source claims that part of the reason for Burrell’s departure is due to a placement decision he allegedly made without the approval of Carey or her management team.

Here’s an update on that…
Anthony Burrell tells Access Hollywood’s Scott Evans that while he has left his longtime job with Mimi, his exit isn’t related to her botched performance. And he's already contracted with another pop star whom he can't mention at this time.

‘Moonlight’ Named Best Picture By National Society Of Film Critics
The National Society of Film Critics have picked its top films of 2016, and the big winner today is writer-director Barry Jenkins’ acclaimed coming of age drama Moonlight, which has won the NSFC’s top honor, Best Picture, as well as Best Director for Jenkins. Moonlight beat out runners-up Manchester By The Sea and La La Land to take both prizes.

But that’s not all. Surprising no one, Moonlight also nabbed a Supporting Actor win for Mahershala Ali, widely considered since the film’s debut to be the front runner in the category at the Academy Awards. Ali faced strong competition, with Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water) and Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals) coming in as runners up. Melania Trump’s decision to wear a Dolce & Gabbana dress to a New Year’s Eve celebration has sparked a firestorm of controversy.
A number of high-profile fashion designers, including Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs and Sophie Theallet, have publicly refused to dress the incoming first lady. In contrast, Stefano Gabbana happily posted a photo of Trump wearing the dress, which retails for $2,995 at Saks Fifth Avenue, to his Instagram account, with the hashtags #DGwoman and #madeinitaly.

Naturally, the Jan. 2 post instantly divided Gabbana’s Instagram followers. In particular, some interpreted the openly gay designer’s post as an endorsement of Donald Trump, and blasted Gabbana for what they perceived as his support of a president-elect who ran on an explicitly anti-LGBTQ platform.
“Many gays, minorities and others fear legislation that will take away freedoms. If it were Mrs. Reagan, Bush or Obama (either party) no one on either side would mind,” one user wrote. “But this is offensive to the core.” Added another: “Sad when a gay designer doesn’t care about other groups being repressed.”

As it turned out, that last remark was too much for Gabbana, who fired back at the user, “Dont call me gay please!! I’m a man!!! Who I love its my private life [sic].”
It’s unclear how the 54-year-old native Italian speaker intended the response to be interpreted. Still, a number of LGBTQ publications, including The Advocate and Queerty, saw Gabbana’s clap back was tone-deaf in its apparent dismissal of “gay.”
It wouldn’t be the first time that the designer has angered the queer community. In 2015, he and his design partner, Domenico Dolce, faced a backlash after claiming that children of same-sex parents were “children of chemistry, synthetic children. Uteruses for rent, semen chosen from a catalog” in an interview with Italy’s Panorama magazine.

Dolce went even further, adding, “I am gay, I cannot have a child. I guess you cannot have everything in life. Life has a natural course, some things cannot be changed. One is the family.”
Months later, the men issued an emotional apology. “When they ask if I wanted to be a parent, I say yes, of course, why not? But it’s not possible in Italy,” Gabbana told Vogue in a September 2015 interview. “I had thought of going to California and having a baby, but I couldn’t bring the baby back to Italy, because you need the mother’s passport. I asked about adoption in Italy. It’s very hard for a straight couple here — imagine if you are gay!”

It’s unclear how this latest debacle will pan out, but here’s to hoping that Dolce & Gabbana consider the power of their words when speaking on LGBTQ issues in the future.
