#MAGFAB: Jelly Roll is the latest Celeb for the cover of 'Men's Health'

Here at the start of 2026, Nashville-based country/rap singer Jelly Roll has added a new accomplishment to his already-crowded mantle of awards. In addition to CMA Awards, a recent pardon for his prior crimes and a recent invitation to join the Grand Ole Opry, the singer is now also a "Men's Health" cover model.
It's a very specific goal he set for himself a year ago.
The magazine's Winter 2026 cover story delves into his 275-pound weight loss journey, (going from 540 to 265 pounds), both how he did it and why. Contrary to some speculation, Jelly Roll says he did not use any weight loss drugs such as GLP-1s, but rather hired a nutritionist and a personal trainer who had the singer running stairs in arenas prior to his shows.
“I just remember everyone telling me GLP-1s, or taking the Ozempic or the Mounjaro, listen, it's gonna hurt your stomach a little bit," Jelly Roll said during the interview. "I've treated my body so bad, I can't believe God's gave me this voice for this long. I didn't deserve it. I literally didn't do it out of fear.”

In addition to the cover story, Jelly Roll worked with "Men's Health" to film his journey for a documentary short, "A Year For A Life."
In the article, Jelly Roll dives into what fueled his weight gain in the first place and how he carried shame with him everywhere he went. Even on stage. His transformation, he says, started with mental health therapy that addressed his overeating and allowed him to treat his eating habits for what they were.
"Once I started treating food like an addiction, it started changing everything for me," he said during the magazine interview. "When I started really looking at the source of why I was eating. What was I eating for?”
Having been formerly addicted to drugs, Jelly Roll said he learned he also had a food addiction that mimicked his prior relationship with cocaine.
“It was a full-blown food addiction. I see that now, like, really clearly. I mean, it checked all the boxes of my cocaine addiction when I was hiding it, because obviously I was so ashamed of it. It's different when you wear your shame….I think [the face tattoos were] another way of covering up stuff. You know? What I needed to cover up was inside. That's what brought me to mental health. I got some real therapy done. I really went and tried to understand, when did I start eating this?”

He said he realized looking back over his musical career that his eating habits were killing him, affecting every facet of his life.
“I was living a dream, a fairy tale," he said in the documentary. "I'm winning awards on TV, I’m being nominated for Grammys, I’m on 'American Idol.' All these cool, unbelievable things are happening to me, and I’m literally too big to enjoy it….You don't see a bunch of 60-year-old obese people, and here I was going into my 40s at 500-and-something pounds."
'I can touch my toes now'
Jelly Roll said in the magazine article his weight kept him from going places and doing some things he wanted to do. He and wife Bunnie XO had to push two queen beds together because they couldn't fit in a king-sized bed.

"It was never-ending sadness and anger. I was a prisoner to my own body. Washing myself properly was a problem. Getting in cars. Every decision I made in life had to be based on my weight. If it could hold me, facilitate me, or fit me—people don’t think about every facet of ‘I still want to be able to do that and I can’t.’ I was so inspired by that kind of stuff.”
Once he got his eating under control, he gradually began do find the joy in exercising. In fact, he said there is a "magical thing" that happens when you start exercising.
"(Once) You get through the absolute misery of the beginning of it, This thing happens in the middle of your workouts where it just sucks, and all of a sudden, it opens up and you feel incredible….I can touch my toes now. I seen my knee caps the other day, standing up. That's a real thing. That's a whole new concept for me, man.”

But Jelly Roll isn't just doing this life transformation alone. He's taking his team with him.
“[I’ve] never been more proud of any culture. To actually look around at a basketball court full of dudes that I used to do blow with, and drink alcohol with, and just go dark with, and dudes that I've made horrible decisions with in life, that are all great dudes now, all thriving to be better humans.”
Just when you thought Jelly Roll's purpose in life was to prove to the incarcerated that there is redemption after jail, another level of the potential of his reach is revealed through this mental and physical shift.
“Maybe that's my purpose, anyway, is to be an example to others in every way," he said to the magazine. "I wish I could bottle what I'm feeling right now up and give it to everybody who's struggling out there. It is special. It's different. And it really came through food and exercise. It came through just being willing to pound the pavement and get my heart rate up….I've always said I broke down for a long time, so I just want to build now. I just want to try to build up.”

#HipHopNews: Hit-Boy Drops New Song After ‘Idiots’ Break Into His Studio
Hit-Boy is turning misfortune into music after his studio was targeted by robbers.
On Sunday (January 4), the multi-platinum producer/rapper released a new song called “Crow Bars” inspired by the scary incident, which occurred in the early hours of that morning.
“This morning around 4am some idiots broke into my office / studio and went thru a hassle just to get next to nothing. I had my grammys there and I know they wanted my jewels but not today champions FOH,” he explained on Instagram.
“I did a freestyle called ‘Crow Bars’ watching the footage of these low life’s going thru my shit smh. If you know these clowns tag em in the comments I got cash for you.”
Accompanied by actual CCTV footage of the break-in, the track finds Hit-Boy recounting the experience and gloating that the criminals “didn’t touch a legend, didn’t touch nothing of worth.”
“They brought crow bars and left with karma / They took my gloves but not my honor / Looked over the Grammys, looked over the gold / And they didn’t touch my kit or my beats or my soul, n*gga,” he defiantly raps over jazzy, horn- and piano-laced production.
LISTEN HERE
The Fontana, California native closes out the song by warning the culprits: “I know one of you bitch-ass n*ggas follow me or something … I’m on you n*ggas, man. Hoe-ass n*ggas. And I’m still icy, still wavy. I’m only getting better and getting stronger.”
“Crow Bars” picks up right where Hit-Boy left off in 2025, which was another productive year for the in-demand producer.
In addition to lacing the likes of Jay Electronica, 03 Greedo, Lefty Gunplay, Jay Worthy and Peezy with heat, the 38-year-old dropped two full-length projects with The Alchemist (Goldfish) and Spank Nitti James (Yeast Talkin’).
Gospel Star Donnie McClurkin Accused Of Using ‘Pray Sessions To Groom & Sexually Abuse Young Church Member

A newly filed lawsuit is casting a shadow over the legacy of Grammy-winning gospel singer and pastor Donnie McClurkin, who is accused of s*xually ab*sing a young man he once mentored.
The complaint, filed in New York, alleges McClurkin abused Giuseppe Corletto over several years after the then-21-year-old sought spiritual guidance in 2003. Corletto says he connected with McClurkin after reading the pastor’s book about overcoming the “curse” of homos*xuality and attending a church event in Long Island.
“At first it was all very innocent and what I thought [was] mentoring,” Corletto told NBC News, adding that he now believes he was groomed.
The lawsuit claims the ab*se occurred during so-called “pray the gay away” sessions and escalated as Corletto worked as McClurkin’s assistant. After an alleged 2013 a$$ault, McClurkin allegedly sent an email calling himself a “dirty ‘old man’” and writing, “I feel so foul…so stupid.”
MORE HERE:
McClurkin, through his attorney, denied the claims as “categorically false,” saying the allegations “grossly mischaracterize” their interactions.
What are your thoughts on these accusations?
Teyana Taylor Has Best Reaction to Critics Choice Best Picture Win
Teyana Taylor won a very important battle at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards. The One Battle After Another actress was over the moon when the film won Best Picture Jan. 4, beating out Bugonia, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Jay Kelly, Marty Supreme, Sentimental Value, Sinners, Train Dreams and Wicked: For Good.
Teyana could hardly believe the victory, as she took the stage at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif., during the Chelsea Handler-hosted ceremony. Clapping her hands together, she walked back and forth shouting "Let's go!" with a big smile on her face.
Director Paul Thomas Anderson went on to give the acceptance speech, but certainly leaned on his cast for their support during the big moment.
"Does anybody have anything that they want to say, to save me?" he asked the cast at one point. "Because, OK, I'd say this is the best time I ever had making a movie. And I feel like it shows it's just a testament to being with people that you love. Because, as somebody said earlier, this is fine, and this is fun, but it really is about the people that you work with it that's all that there is at the end of the day."
As for Teyana, the 35-year-old was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress alongside Wicked: For Good’s Ariana Grande, Weapons’ Amy Madigan, Sinners’ Wunmi Mosaku and Sentimental Value’s Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, though the trophy went to Amy.
The show was the topper on an incredible year for the “Gonna Love Me” singer—who shares kids Iman "Junie" Tayla, 10, and Rue Rose, 5, with ex-husband Iman Shumpert—as she previously shared how amazed she was at the recognition she received for the film after so long in the entertainment industry.
“You can see my patience being in this game since I was 15, doing a little bit of everything,” Teyana told The Hollywood Reporter in November. “This moment hits a lot harder than it would’ve if everything had gone my way when I wanted it to.”
In addition to acting, Teyana has made a name for herself as a singer (with four studio albums), a model, a choreographer for Beyoncé and even a reality star, appearing on a 2007 episode of the MTV show My Super Sweet 16.
As for where she is in career right now, Teyana feels everything has fallen into place perfectly, adding, “There’s no such thing as complaining about answered prayers.”
She joked, “Do you know how dope it is to be shown this much love from people who don’t know you from a can of paint?”
Captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro & Wife Plead Not Guilty To U.S. Drug Trafficking Charges

Captured #Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, pleaded not guilty Monday (Jan. 5) in a New York federal court to a series of drug trafficking and weapons charges, days after being captured by U.S. military forces and brought to the United States for prosecution.
The indictment unsealed over the weekend accuses the couple of narco terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine and weapons related offenses, with prosecutors alleging involvement in a large scale narcotics network.
Maduro, speaking through an interpreter, adamantly maintained his innocence in the courtroom. “I’m innocent. I’m not guilty — I’m a decent man,” he said, asserting his character while also stating he remains “still president of my country.” The proceedings mark the beginning of an extended legal process that will determine how the high profile case unfolds.
Questlove Admits That Having Kids Is One of His ‘Biggest Fears’: ‘I Have Kicked That Can Down the Road’
Becoming a parent can be a scary prospect. For starters, it’s a strong financial commitment. Adding another mouth to feed on top of the new clothes they’ll need as they grow, the countless diaper runs, medicine, and doctor visits. Those savings become merely a suggestion after a while. Then, you think about how to be the right influence on a baby. Kids always look up to their parents and watch, even when you don’t think they do. It’s a lot of responsibility, and it’s something that Questlove has been especially anxious about in his life.
On December 28th, The Roots drummer spoke on his iHeartRadio show with rapper Open Mike Eagle. Deep into the episode, the pair spoke about fatherhood, something that Questlove is admittedly scared of at this point in his life. Moreover, he realizes that he’s reaching an age where he has to decide whether or not he’s ever going to be ready. But like the rest of us, he isn’t getting any younger. Consequently, it’s been something that’s been ravaging the musician’s mind.
“One of the biggest fears I have in life is becoming a father. And I’m not a father. And I have kicked that can down the road,” he said. “‘Alright, when I’m 33, I’m ready. All right, I’m 36.’ And all it takes is just like a day with one of Roots’ kids for me to be like, ‘Nope, I’m good. I’m good. I’ll wait till I’m 41. All right, 45. I’ll wait ’til then.’ And it’s time to s**t or get off the pot.”
As a result, Questlove asks Open Mike Eagle whether or not he was ready 16 years ago to have his own kids. He credits his parenthood working due to having a stable partnership at the time. It worked even with the instability and fears of being a striving artist. But even while working creatively, the pair eventually worked it out. Moreover, they planned on having their child, which also helps matters.
But naturally, Questlove is trying to wrap his mind around career goals and financial goals before making such a decision. “‘Cause in my mind, I always felt like, ‘Okay, I’ve got to make this amount of money and I’ve got to have these projects done and everything and then then I’m ready,’” Questlove said.

BET has officially dropped the Season 10 trailer and key art for “Tyler Perry’s Sistas”, and the milestone season wastes no time raising the stakes.

The trailer makes it clear that forgiveness is not guaranteed and trust is earned the hard way.
The Car Bomb Fallout Changes Everything

Wegovy Is Now Available in Pill Form
It’s hard to overstate just how mainstream Wegovy has become. What started as a prescription weight-loss drug quickly turned into a cultural shorthand for the entire GLP-1 boom.
And according to CNN, these medications are now so common that surveys suggest about one in eight adults in the U.S. is currently using one. Wegovy’s rise has been fueled by its track record in clinical trials, constant social media chatter, and the reality that many people stuck with it long enough to see meaningful results.
The problem? Access. Between insurance hurdles, high prices, and weekly injections, plenty of people were locked out.
That’s where the pill version comes in.
Novo Nordisk has officially introduced an oral formulation of Wegovy, starting with the lowest dose, and it’s already available by prescription. The shift away from injections wasn’t about changing what the drug does—it was about changing how people take it.
A daily pill lowers the barrier for patients who were uncomfortable with needles or unwilling to commit to weekly shots. It also opens the door for more predictable pricing for people paying cash, especially since many insurance plans still don’t cover weight-loss drugs for obesity.
The pricing structure reflects that push. The starter dose of the Wegovy pill costs $149 per month for self-pay patients purchasing directly, which undercuts the injectable version’s usual monthly cost.
Some higher doses are temporarily priced the same before increasing later this spring, while the most potent pill doses carry a higher monthly price. For patients whose insurance covers Wegovy, both the pill and the injection can cost as little as $25 per month through the company’s savings program.
The oral version is being distributed through traditional pharmacies, select telehealth providers, and Novo Nordisk’s own pharmacy platform.
Functionally, the pill delivers the same active ingredient—semaglutide—that powers both Wegovy injections and the diabetes drug Ozempic.
Studies showed that the oral version produced weight-loss results similar to those of the shot. Nausea, vomiting, and other gastrointestinal issues were the most commonly reported side effects, and a small percentage of participants stopped treatment because of them.
One key difference comes down to routine. The Wegovy pill must be taken on an empty stomach with a small amount of water, followed by a brief wait before eating or taking other medications.

Coco Gauff Pushes Back After Fans Take Her Comments ‘Out of Context’

Coco Gauff is a two-time Grand Slam champion, a major face of Team USA, and one of the most recognizable athletes in tennis right now. She’s also not someone who lets a viral soundbite spiral without stepping in to clear the air.
On Monday, January 5, the 21-year-old took to X (formerly Twitter) to address backlash after comments she made about American tennis fans began circulating online — and, in her words, were taken “out of context.”
lol I ‘m going to clarify because people are dragging this out of context. I ‘m not expecting people to travel to tournaments to watch us play. But there are many tournaments that we have in america and abroad where americans are already attending regardless of who is playing Show more
Coco calls out US tennis fans as being ‘the worst’ at supporting US players overseas
“I feel like we’re definitely, in tennis, the worst. I’ve always said I wish our country in other places would show up throughout the world as we see smaller countries support”
“[I’m] not expecting people to travel to tournaments to watch us play,” Gauff wrote, making it clear she wasn’t calling on fans to spend money or go out of their way to support her on tour.
Instead, she explained that her original remarks were about the energy in the stands at events where American fans are already present. Gauff pointed out that at many tournaments in the U.S. and abroad — excluding the U.S. Open — support for American players isn’t always as visible. “Whereas those from smaller countries come with their colors and flags and it is clear on who they are supporting,” she explained. “I was just speaking from my perspective.”
The reigning French Open champ also acknowledged the realities of the sport, noting that she understands tennis “is not accessible to everyone” and that finances play a role in who can attend tournaments. She emphasized that her comments were meant “for those who are already attending,” adding that she wished they were “as passionate as those from other countries,” particularly at team events — not as an expectation or demand.
“People don’t owe me anything,” she added. “I was just honestly answering a question I was asked and it was simply an observation I noticed about other countries vs mine that is all. Nevertheless I am grateful for any support no matter how big or small it is.”
The clarification followed a clip from last weekend’s United Cup in Australia, where Gauff said American tennis fans are “the worst” at showing support overseas.
Once that hit social media, reactions poured in. Some fans agreed with her take, especially when it comes to team competitions. Others pushed back, saying they root for players they enjoy watching, not necessarily based on nationality.
Fellow American tennis player Taylor Fritz also jumped in, backing up his teammate and pushing back on the way the clip was being interpreted
People always wanna take things in the worst possible way. I was there sitting next to her, and I know EXACTLY what Coco meant and was trying to say, and she’s right. There is absolutely no disrespect meant to the US fans at all in this statement. If we were to play Czech or Show more
“People always wanna take things in the worst possible way. I was there sitting next to her, and I know EXACTLY what Coco meant and was trying to say, and she’s right,” the 28-year-old U.S. men’s tennis star said on X. “There is absolutely no disrespect meant to the US fans at all in this statement. If we were to play Czech or Poland here at United cup there will be a massive group of fans going crazy for them. We love the Americans that come out and support, some other countries abroad just have a really insane sports culture, but we appreciate every single American abroad that comes to watch.”
All of it unfolded as Gauff opened her 2026 season at the United Cup. According to ESPN, she later lost a three-set match to Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in Perth.

Destiny’s Child hints at 2026 reunion with cryptic post

The iconic R&B group Destiny’s Child sent social media into a frenzy with a cryptic social media message that has fans speculating whether the legendary trio might be planning their first major collaboration in years. With just two words and a telling photograph, the group’s official account sparked a wave of anticipation that has followers dissecting every detail.
The official Instagram account for the Grammy-winning group posted a tantalizing hint that immediately captured attention: “Almost 2026,” accompanied by a champagne glass emoji. The post featured a photograph of Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland together, sending their devoted fanbase into speculation overdrive.
The seemingly innocuous message triggered an avalanche of responses from followers desperate for confirmation of a reunion. One enthusiastic commenter pleaded for a reunion rather than rumors of Beyoncé’s rock album, while another demanded clarification with a series of flame and eye emojis. Supporters flooded the comments section expressing gratitude in advance for what they hope will be a historic comeback year.
Michelle Williams recently addressed reunion speculation during an appearance on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, offering a glimmer of hope to eager fans. When questioned about the possibility of the group reuniting, she responded with an intriguing statement: anything is possible. Williams also revealed her preference for creating music exclusively with her former bandmates, suggesting that any future musical endeavors would prioritize their established chemistry.
The last full performance by the trio occurred at Beyoncé’s groundbreaking Coachella headline slot in 2018, a performance that became legendary in popular culture. Before that milestone, the group appeared together at the 2015 Stellar Gospel Music Awards and delivered a memorable performance during Beyoncé’s Super Bowl halftime show that same year.
While the group has not released new material under the Destiny’s Child name, all three members collaborated on Williams’s 2014 single Say Yes, though they were credited individually rather than as the group. This collaboration demonstrated their continued willingness to work together, even if not under their iconic collective identity.
Mathew Knowles, the group’s long-term manager and Beyoncé’s father, recently expressed doubt about a full-scale reunion tour. Speaking in an interview with BagFuel, the music executive stated his skepticism about the possibility of the award-winning ensemble embarking on a joint touring venture.
Despite his reservations about touring, Knowles indicated in 2023 that he would enthusiastically support any decision the members made regarding new music. As their current manager, he acknowledged that such decisions ultimately rest with the artists themselves, though he expressed personal enthusiasm for the prospect.
Knowles noted the practical challenges facing any potential reunion, citing each member’s current professional commitments. He pointed out that Beyoncé continues developing new projects, Rowland pursues film opportunities, and Williams performs on Broadway, making coordinated schedules particularly challenging. He also suggested that the members might be hesitant to tour at an older age, though he playfully proposed that their children could eventually tour as the next generation of the group.
The trio released their final album together, Destiny Fulfilled, in 2004. Since that release, each member has achieved remarkable success through solo endeavors, establishing themselves as formidable artists independent of their group identity.
Beyoncé’s career trajectory has been nothing short of extraordinary. Recent reports indicate she achieved billionaire status following her successful touring ventures. Her 2023 Renaissance World Tour generated nearly $600 million in revenue, cementing her position among music’s elite performers.
Forbes estimated her net worth at $800 million in December 2023, though that figure has continued climbing through subsequent ventures. She reinvented her artistic image with last year’s Cowboy Carter, a country album that earned critical acclaim and secured Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards.
Her 2024 Christmas halftime performance during the Baltimore Ravens versus Houston Texans NFL game reportedly earned approximately $50 million. This year, the Cowboy Carter Tour generated over $400 million in ticket revenue, with an additional $50 million from merchandise sales, demonstrating her unparalleled commercial appeal and cultural influence.
The cryptic social media post has reignited conversations about one of R&B’s most influential groups, leaving fans to wonder whether 2026 might finally bring the reunion they have been anticipating for years.
Anthony Joshua Reemerges After Nigeria Crash Claims Two Close Friends
Anthony Joshua shared his first public message this week following a deadly car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two people deeply tied to his personal and professional life.
The crash took place earlier this week on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a major thoroughfare known for heavy traffic. Joshua was part of a traveling convoy when the collision occurred. Two longtime associates, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, were killed. Both men had been fixtures in Joshua’s inner circle for years and were widely regarded as family.
Joshua, 36, acknowledged the loss in an Instagram post, choosing an image over words. The photo captured a private moment of mourning, showing Joshua standing alongside his mother and the families of Ghami and Ayodele. One relative held a framed photograph of Ghami, a quiet but powerful detail that drew attention across social media.
The absence of a written caption stood out. Many observers viewed the decision as deliberate, allowing the image to speak for the loss and keeping the focus on remembrance rather than on public commentary. Messages of support quickly followed from fans, fighters, and figures throughout the boxing community.
Joshua suffered minor injuries in the crash and was treated at a hospital in Lagos before being medically cleared. He remained in Nigeria for several days afterward, staying close to the families and assisting with arrangements, a choice that drew praise from supporters.
Reports indicate Joshua returned to the United Kingdom on Saturday without making public appearances. He has not commented on his boxing plans since the incident, with sources saying his priority remains honoring Ghami and Ayodele.
Funeral services for both men are scheduled for January 4 at the London Central Mosque. What had been an active period in Joshua’s career has now been eclipsed by tragedy.
The focus remains on remembrance, family, and shared grief, underscoring that even elite athletes confront moments that reach far beyond the game.

Bishop Patrick Wooden Says Jamal Bryant Presented His Wife Like a “Two Dollar Whore”
Bishop Patrick Wooden sermon footage began circulating online after the COGIC bishop publicly criticized Pastor Jamal Bryant over how he presented his wife during church.
From the pulpit, Wooden described seeing a preacher introduce his wife while she wore what he called a black and flesh colored dress that, in his words, created the illusion that she was not wearing anything underneath. He said he later heard the preacher defend the look by explaining that he bought the dress himself and suggesting that critics simply had not “been anywhere.”
That explanation did not sit well with Wooden. During the sermon, he stated that his objection was not to the woman wearing the dress but to the man who chose to present his wife that way. He stressed that distinction repeatedly, saying his statement was about the husband’s actions, not the wife herself.
Still, the language used in the critique immediately drew attention. Wooden said that the way the wife was presented made her appear like “a two dollar whore,” then clarified that he was not calling her that, but describing how the presentation came across. He emphasized that the words he referenced about purchasing the dress came directly from the preacher himself.
Wooden went on to question what kind of places a pastor would have to visit to believe such a presentation was appropriate, saying he had no desire to go anywhere that shaped that type of thinking. He framed the moment as an issue of decency and responsibility, especially for men who lead congregations.
He then contrasted the situation with his own marriage, explaining that his wife would never agree to wear something like that in public, regardless of his opinion. According to Wooden, his wife might choose to wear something revealing at home, away from public view and away from grandchildren, but not at an event where everyone could see.
The bishop added that he did not know of a greater way for a man to demean his wife than by publicly presenting her in that manner and failing to see the problem. He said that if a husband could not recognize that as demeaning, then something was wrong with him. He closed that portion of the sermon by referencing a past moment involving the same pastor, recalling when he commented on Cam Newton’s legs, suggesting a pattern of questionable judgment.
Since the clip surfaced, reactions have spread quickly across social media, with viewers debating church standards, personal expression, and whether public rebukes from the pulpit help or harm the broader conversation

Laila Edwards Becomes The First Black Woman On Team USA’s Olympic Roster

A Black woman will make history at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
Laila Edwards will officially become the first Black woman to represent Team USA in ice hockey at the Winter Olympics. Her selection to the 2026 Olympic squad was announced live on the TODAY show on January 2.
“It still hasn’t really kicked in yet. Getting that call is like a dream come true,” Edwards told the Associated Press.
“Always had dreams of playing in the pros, but the biggest dream was to go to the Olympics, for sure.”
A 21-year-old phenom representing the University of Wisconsin, Edwards is one of the best players in the spor. In 2023, she became the first Black woman to play for the U.S. senior national team, and in 2024, she made history as the youngest American ever to be named MVP of the IIHF Women’s World Championship.
In an essay for Wisconsin’s “Forging Firsts” series, Edwards spoke about how she always tried to “blend in” but “always stood out” as a girl playing sports with boys. Also, how she’s been a trailblazer as the only Black woman on her team.
“I assumed this would go away when I started playing on an all-girls team at the boarding school, but it didn’t,” she wrote. “While I loved my team, there were moments – like when they shared makeup routines – that highlighted my difference. None of the products they used matched my skin tone. Early on, all of this made it challenging for me to find myself and who I was comfortable being.”
Edwards also wrote that her identity sometimes overshadows her accomplishments.
“Will others see the sacrifices and dedication that got me here?” she wrote. “Will they understand the discipline demanded to attend 5am practices or the courage required to leave my loved ones to pursue my passion?”
