Naomi Osaka for Vogue US - Jan 2021!

Using her platform to highlight issues that matter to her helped Naomi Osaka secure a victory at the 2020 U.S. Open, she says in Vogue's January 2021 cover story.

The tennis champion — who was photographed in a Louis Vuitton dress by Annie Leibovitz for the cover image — opened up about choosing to wear seven masks with the names of victims of racial injustice ahead of her matches at the Flushing, New York, tournament earlier this year.

Among those she highlighted were Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Trayvon Martin.

“I was just thinking that I had this opportunity to raise awareness," Osaka told Vogue. "Tennis is watched all around the world, so people who might not know these names can Google them and learn their stories."

Continued Osaka, "That was a big motivator for me, and I think it helped me win the tournament.”

Osaka defeated Victoria Azarenka to win the 2020 U.S. Open Women's Singles final in September.

The athlete, who is Japanese-Haitian-American, also chatted about her heritage in the interview. Though she "grew up with a little bit more Japanese heritage and culture," Osaka said she identifies as Black.

"I’m Black, and I live in America, and I personally didn’t think it was too far-fetched when I started talking about things that were happening here," she told Vogue about her social justice activism.

In addition to her on-court support for the Black Lives Matter movement, Osaka also joined in-person protests in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after the death of George Floyd while in police custody.

"I don’t think it matters if you’re shy or not, or if you’re introverted or extroverted. You’re just there in the moment," she explained to the magazine. "When you see it in real life — so many cameras filming everyone, police with guns outside the city hall, the parents of other victims telling their stories — it kind of hits you differently.”

In the interview, Osaka spoke about her frequent opponent Serena Williams, who she defeated to win the 2018 U.S. Open women's singles final.

Calling Williams "more aggressive" as a player, Osaka said that there's much the tennis veteran is "better at."

"Honestly, I’m kind of scared of her," said Osaka. "Not scared scared but — I’m intimidated, and I get very shy when she’s like 10 feet away from me."

Vogue's January 2021 issue is available on newsstands on December 22nd.

#HipHopNews: Pop Smoke To Make Posthumous Acting Debut In New Movie Next Year!

There were levels and layers to Pop Smoke's skill set during his career. Following the beloved Brooklyn drill rapper's tragic death back in February, he'll be making his posthumous acting debut next year.

According to a report from Deadline on Thursday (Dec. 10), Pop will be appearing in the Focus Features film Boogie, which will be released on March 5, 2021—less than a month after the one-year anniversary of his death.

While Pop Smoke's role in the film isn't explicitly clear, the film is about a gifted basketball star named Alfred "Boogie" Chin from Queens, N.Y., who has dreams of making it to the NBA. However, his parents have other plans for Boogie and want him to focus on obtaining a scholarship to a prestigious college. The film tells the story of Boogie, played by Taylor Takahashi, maneuvering through a new relationship, high school, his basketball rivals and his parents' expectations.

Boogie is also Eddie Huang’s feature directorial debut. Huang's memoir, Fresh Off the Boat: A Memoir, was adapted into the ABC television series of the same name.

Huang spoke of Pop Smoke's charisma when the late rhymer auditioned for the role. In The New York Times' June article chronicling Pop's final days before he was shot and killed in Los Angeles earlier this year, Huang explained that the rapper's acting ability was captivating.

"Pop shows up to the audition—Palm Angels head to toe—and he’s just a kid, but he has the voice of 50 Cent and Paul Mooney," the director said. "You can tell he’s weathered, he’s an old soul. Within two takes, you could see the swag just come out of nowhere. He explodes on camera. I stopped the audition right there. He can turn emotions on a dime. He could be funny. He can be mean. A lot of actors just don’t have the depth of emotion and experiences, but because of what Pop’s gone through, he has a tremendous well to draw from."

Huang continued, "He gave me a thousand percent. They were tough 16-hour days, overnights, and he shot five overnights in a row. Kids were coming on the bridge to watch us shoot the scenes. We would play Pop’s record. All our actors, the extras, the kids on the bridge watching us shoot scenes, everyone was doing the Woo dance. It was pretty special."

With the coronavirus pandemic impacting the movie industry as well as the music industry, it's unclear if the film will premiere in theaters. Nonetheless, look out for the Grammy-nominated rapper on a screen near you next year.

Iconic Trailblazing Country Superstar Charley Pride Dead At 86 From COVID-19 Complications!

Charley Pride, the legendary baritone singer who broke barriers as the first Black country superstar and first Black member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, died Saturday due to complications from COVID-19, according to a statement from by publicist, Jeremy Westby. A post on the singer’s Facebook page said he was “admitted to the hospital in late November with COVID-19 type symptoms and despite the incredible efforts, skill and care of his medical team over the past several weeks, he was unable to overcome the virus." Pride was 86 years old.

Born a sharecropper’s son in Sledge, Miss., on March 18, 1934, Charley Frank Pride bought his first guitar at age 14 and taught himself how to play. However, he first embarked upon a professional baseball career with the Memphis Red Sox, a Negro American League team, and served two years in the U.S. Army before seriously pursuing music, after injuries dashed his baseball hopes. Pride moved to Nashville in 1963 and two years later met famed producer Jack Clement, who invited him to a recording session at RCA Studio B; the resulting demos caught the attention of RCA Records’ Chet Atkins, who signed Pride in 1966. Pride went on to become RCA’s best-selling artist since Elvis Presley.

During the peak years of his recording career, between 1966 and 1987, Pride earned 52 top 10 country hits (36 of which went to No. 1), 12 gold albums, four Grammys (including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017), and three Country Music Association Awards, including Entertainer of the Year in 1971. In 1967, he became the first Black artist to perform on the Grand Ole Opry since DeFord Bailey in 1925.

Pride was honored with the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award at the 54th annual CMAs ceremony just last month, where he admitted that he was “nervous as can be” during his charming acceptance speech. At that time, Country Music Association SEO Sarah Trahern said, “Charley Pride is the epitome of a trailblazer. Few other artists have grown country music’s rich heritage and led to the advancement of country music around the world like Charley. His distinctive voice has created a timeless legacy that continues to echo through the country community today.”

Black country star Jimmie Allen, who stated, “I might never had a career in country music if it wasn't for a groundbreaking artist who made the best kind of history. … Thank you, Mr. Charley Pride, for all the songs and for breaking down so many barriers with your remarkable life.” On the CMAs telecast, Pride crooned his million-selling crossover single “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’” with Allen; this turned out to be his last public performance.

While it was initially unclear if Pride’s contracting of COVID-19 was linked to the CMA Awards, the Country Music Association did come under fire at that time for going ahead with a live, in-person, mostly maskless ceremony, at an indoor venue, Nashville’s Music City Center, during a week when there had been a coronavirus spike in Tennessee (the state had just reported its highest single-day increase four days earlier, with 5,071 new cases). Several artists that were slated to perform or attend the CMA Awards that evening — Lee Brice, Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard, Lady A’s Charles Kelley, and fiddle player Jenee Fleenor — withdrew at the last minute because they had either tested positive for the virus or had been exposed. However, in a statement addressing the controversy, the Country Music Association insisted, “We are following all protocols that have been put in place by the CDC as well as the creative unions to ensure we provide the safest environment possible.”

I don’t want to jump to conclusions because no family statement has been made, but if this was a result of the CMAs being indoors, we should all be outraged. Rest in power, Charley. https://t.co/rSIbsLNwYj

— MAREN MORRIS (@MarenMorris) December 12, 2020

On Saturday afternoon, the Country Music Association responded to speculation that Pride’s death was connected to his appearance at ceremony, via the following statement on the organization’s website: "Everyone affiliated with the CMA Awards followed strict testing protocols outlined by the city health department and unions. Charley was tested prior to traveling to Nashville. He was tested upon landing in Nashville, and again on show day, with all tests coming back negative. After returning to Texas following the CMA Awards, Charley again tested negative multiple times. All of us in the Country Music community are heartbroken by Charley’s passing. Out of respect for his family during their grieving period, we will not be commenting on this further."

Pride is survived by his wife, Ebby Rozene Cohran Pride, four siblings, three children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the Pride family requests that donations be made to the Pride Scholarship at Jesuit College Preparatory School, St. Philips School and Community Center, the Food Bank, or another charity of one’s choice. Upon hearing the news of the pioneering country artist’s death, his fans and friends took to social media to grieve and pay tribute.

Ashanti /Keyshia Cole Verzus Canceled Due To Ashanti Having COVID-19 Symptoms But It Has Been Rescheduled!

On Saturday (Dec. 12), disappointing news broke that Keyshia Cole and Ashanti’s highly anticipated Verzuz was canceled without any reasoning as to why.

This news definitely upset fans. Millions of supporters of the two stars have been asking for an IG Live battle between them for months now. Cole initiated the excitement when she teased a Verzuz showdown with the former Murder Inc. star on Instagram. It was quiet for a while after that until Wednesday Dec. 2 when the “Love” singer confirmed that she would, indeed, be going head to head with someone on Verzuz. “How are you guys LONG TIME NO HEAR!!!” she wrote on social media. “Verzuz BATTLE OTW.” It wasn’t confirmed until a couple of days later that her opponent would be Ashanti.

Soon after news of the Verzuz cancellation broke, Ashanti took to IG to reveal why the event wasn’t happening after all. She posted a message that read, “Hey y’all. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I tested positive for COVID-19. I’m OK and not in any pain. I’m actually down to do the Verzuz from my house...we’re trying to figure it out.” Take a look at that note below.

This situation is very reminiscent of when Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and Teddy Riley had to reschedule their Verzuz a couple of times earlier in the year. The first time was because Edmonds tested positive for Coronavirus and the second time was due to Riley’s many technical difficulties.

So, it looks like we’ll have to wait another day to see an epic showdown between the two R&B legends. We’re glad that Ashanti isn’t in any type of pain, however, and we’re wishing her a speedy recovery not only so she can give us a Verzuz we’ve all been waiting for, but for her own well being.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait another day to see an epic showdown between the two R&B legends. But, not too long. Verzuz has officially announced the new date for the ladies’ Verzuz, which will be on Saturday, Jan. 9.

Rap Icon Pepa Of Salt-N-Pepa Sues Doctor For Failed 3x Butt Job!

Pepa of Salt-N-Pepa has filed suit against a doctor who she says made her condition worse after coming to him to repair damage she suffered in a car accident.

According to TMZ, the rap icon alleges Dr. David Sayah talked her into three separate procedures after a July 2018 accident caused the biopolymer implants she previously had in her butt and hips to shift.

The lawsuit states that when she was first referred to Dr. Sayah in September 2019, the initial plan was just to remove the implants. Instead, Pep says he convinced her to try multiple corrective surgeries, none of which helped and eventually left her with a hardened butt. In February 2020, she finally convinced him to simply remove everything, but she later found out he left a “large amount of biopolymer silicone and dead scar tissue” behind.

She says she’s now going to suffer from the injuries he caused for the rest of her life and will continue to need surgery and is suing for an undisclosed amount.

The news comes just after Lifetime announced the premiere date for the highly anticipated Salt-N-Pepa biopic. The self-titled film is co-produced by Queen Latifah and directed by New Jack City director Mario Van Peeble and will premiere on the network on January 23. The Loni Love-hosted “Salt-N-Pepa Interview Special” will follow immediately after.

Lister’s manager, Cindy Cowan, spoke to CNN and shared that the Friday actor started feeling sick about a week ago.

Cowan shared that his symptoms “got really bad, really quick” and that he had trouble breathing and felt very weak. “It literally went so fast,” she shared. The manager said the actor was scheduled to have gone to the set for a new movie last weekend but he called to cancel because he was feeling too weak and couldn’t breathe. “Tiny doesn’t miss movies; he took it very seriously,” she said.

According to the manager, the actor canceled plans for a panel at a TV festival via Zoom on Wednesday (Dec. 9). Cowan’s assistant went to Lister’s house that day to check-in and his family members also started calling him that night, but she says the calls went unanswered.

One of Lister’s friends went to his house Thursday and called the police for help when nobody opened the door. When deputies entered the actor’s home, they found him dead. “Mr. Lister’s death appears to be of natural causes but will ultimately be determined by the Office of Medical Examiner-Coroner,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement, adding that the death is still under investigation.

According to what Cowan told TMZ, the actor was diagnosed with COVID four months ago and feared the virus had returned. The actor reportedly felt lethargic and struggled to breathe, but his diabetes also made him high-risk. She says he wasn’t hospitalized but quarantined at home. In an interview that took place just days before his death, Lister said he was looking forward to taking the coronavirus vaccine.

Regina Hall Celebrates Her 50th Birthday With Hilarious Song: "A Bitch Is Old Today"!

Regina Hall may be a self-proclaimed "old bitch," but she sure knows how to have a ton of birthday fun.

On Dec. 12, the Girls Trip star posted a video to Instagram of her singing an original song in honor of her 50th birthday. Joining Regina were some of her Nine Perfect Strangers co-stars, like Grace Van Patten, Zoe Terakes and Tiffany Boone. According to Regina's Instagram caption, co-star Melvin Gregg directed the whole thing.

"Because laughter keeps you forever young I wrote a special song for a special Birthday. Thank you to my co-stars @zoeterakes @kathebbss @gracevanpatten @tiffmonet for celebrating and singing with me! And thank you to @melvingregg for shooting directing and editing the video," Regina wrote in the caption of the video. "Shout out to @natandalex and @xobarbodi for assisting."

The music video proves that Regina is really enjoying her big day. In addition to footage of the Scary Movie alum jumping on a trampoline and meditating, the new video shows her and friends on lounge chairs sipping cocktails and hanging out in the pool.

"A bitch is old, today," Regina sings in the video. "I've passed half my life expectancy."

She concluded the track with, "A bitch is old today, but I made it here gratefully."

The show is about a group of strangers who come together at a wellness retreat, which may have a sinister agenda. It stars Nicole Kidman as the organization's mysterious guru and Melissa McCarthy as a woman searching for answers.

While there will be plenty of questions to explore in Nine Perfect Strangers, there's no doubt that Regina is making the most out of her 50th birthday with the hilarious help of her co-stars.

Offset Responds to Snoop Dogg's Negative Comments About "WAP"!

Offset is backing up his wife Cardi B and her hit record “WAP” in response to recent criticism from Snoop Dogg, who suggested the song featuring Megan Thee Stallion is too vulgar.

“Let's have some, you know, privacy, some intimacy where he wants to find out as opposed to you telling him," Snoop told Central Ave host Julissa Bermudez during a recent interview. "To me, it's like, it's too fashionable when that in secrecy, that should be a woman's...that's like your pride and possession. That's your jewel of the Nile. That's what you should hold onto. That should be a possession that no one gets to know about until they know about it."

Following Snoop’s comments, TMZ approached Offset to get his thoughts. The Migos rapper quickly supported his wife's work, politely suggesting that his elder stay out of women’s business.

“I love Snoop man, but she grown. I don’t get in female business,” he told TMZ. “I hate when men do that. I don’t do that.”

Offset came through with receipts, citing the song’s mainstream success as one reason to dismiss the Doggystyle rapper’s criticism.

“It’s entertainment, you know what I’m saying? That’s a number one record,” he said. “Anybody can say what they wanna say, that’s six-time platinum in three or four months...it wasn’t that bad cause it went No. 1.”

He continues by emphasizing the need to support women in the industry.

“As rappers, we talk about the same shit,” he said, referring to male artists. “It’s a lot of women empowerment, don’t shoot it down. We’ve never had this many artists that’s female artists running this shit. They catching up to us, passing us, setting records.”

The Atlanta rapper did make it clear that his support for Cardi and her music wasn't him taking shots at the West Coast vet. “I don’t want to seem like I’m dissing at Snoop,” he clarified. “At the same time I say all men should stay outta women business.” Period.

Kim Kardashian & Kanye West Are Living 'Separate Lives' Amid Marriage Woes!

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West can’t seem to get on the same page.

The couple’s marriage is still trying to recover after a challenging summer of bizarre outbursts and divulged family secrets. And now, a source tells PEOPLE that although Kimye is still together, the pair “very much live separate lives” at this point.

"Kim has work and projects that are important to her, and Kanye has his. Their lives don't overlap much,” the insider told the outlet, a notion to which neither West nor Kim’s reps have responded as yet.

Even so, the source insists “Kim seems happy” and that she’s “very focused on work and causes,” citing the reality star’s turn toward law as she continues studying to become a lawyer.

"She strongly believes she can make a change when it comes to prison reform,” the insider added. “This is her passion … Her family is very proud of her.”

This news comes just days after reports alluded that Kimye is “still having difficulties” in their marriage. A source told Entertainment Tonight that the couple, who share four children together, is “doing their best” to save their marriage, but after a turbulent summer, the beauty businesswoman is “at the end of her rope.”

"Kim is exhausted from continually trying but keeps their vows in mind when making any pertinent decisions. And Kanye is working on his psychological health and mental state," a source told the outlet. "The family and Kanye are still in contact and everyone wants the best for Kanye, Kim, their kids, and the rest of the family."

Apparently, it’s Kim’s hope that West will “work on himself” during this rough patch of their relationship, if not for their marriage then for their family. "Kim’s family will support her in any decision she makes, but she feels that the most important thing to recognize before making any choice is realizing what’s best for the kids, herself, Kanye and the rest of the family, essentially in that order.”

Arizona ER Doctor Terminated After Speaking On The Severity Of COVID-19!

Dr. Cleavon Gilman worked at a Yuma, Arizona hospital as an emergency-medicine physician where he was well-known. But after making social media posts about the seriousness of the novel coronavirus, the doctor was fired.

“What I don’t understand about this is I have been advocating for Arizona; I have been calling for a mask mandate, the closure of schools, and indoor dining,” Gilman told The Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY Network. “I did all of this because we are seeing an unprecedented number of cases. This is my third surge — I know how this ends.”

But the hospital is denouncing the claims. Yuma Regional Medical Center said that the whole thing is a misunderstanding, and Dr. Gilman is on the schedule to work.

“News to me,” the doctor tweeted.

Early last summer, Gilman moved his fiancé and two children from New York to Yuma, to serve “the small community during the pandemic.”

But as of November 23, the doctor has not been back to work all because of his Nov. 22 tweet in which he said, “Just got to work and was notified there are no more ICU beds in the state of Arizona.”

“What happened to the 175 beds??? We likely don’t have nursing to staff them,” he added. The state’s health department also reported that 90% of the ICU units were taken for. The tweet garnered over 81,000 likes and 30,000 retweets.

The next day, he was contacted by the health care staffing company that he was employed by, Envision Healthcare. It was the company who told him the hospital doesn’t want him back.

“They told me it was because of the tweets and I couldn’t believe it because that was accurate information I posted to inform the citizens of Arizona,” he said. “It is a grave injustice and it’s not just happening to me. Doctors everywhere are afraid to speak up.”

Late Thursday night, Yuma Regional Medical Center released a statement on Twitter that read, “While he is not speaking on behalf of YRMC, we respect Dr. Gilman’s right to share his personal perspective on the pandemic.”

“We need good caregivers like Dr. Gilman here,” the statement said.

Gilman’s actions were applauded by President-elect Joe Biden, who said, “I promise you, doc, you are going to have a full-blown partner. You have my word as a Biden.”

The healthcare system released a statement on Gilman, “As a physician on the frontlines, he has continuously advocated for his patients and the health and safety of the Yuma community – a traditionally medically underserved community,” the statement said. “We recognize Dr. Gilman’s depth of experience, perspectives, and voice he lends to those who might not have one due to the inequities in the complex U.S. healthcare system.”

Jerry Harris Star Of “Cheer” Indicted On New Sex Abuse Charges!

Jerry Harris, the star of the Netflix docuseries “Cheer,” has been indicted on additional charges of sexual solicitation of minors. He is already facing federal child pornography charges.

Harris was praised for his upbeat personality and encouraging “mat talk,” as seen in the Emmy-winning docuseries that follows his cheerleading team. He also landed a gig interviewing celebs on the red carpet at the Academy Awards for “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

In the original complaint filed back in September, prosecutors say that 21-year-old Harris admitted to FBI agents that he had asked a teenage boy to send him sexual photographs of himself. He also admitted to asking for child pornography from at least 10 to 15 minors via Snapchat. Harris told the agents that he was aware that they were minors at the time. Prosecutors also claim Harris sexually assaulted a 15-year-old boy in a public bathroom during a cheer event.

It is alleged that Harris solicited sex from minors while away at cheerleading competitions in the new charges. He groomed teenage boys within his cheer community, convincing them to send him sexual pictures and videos of themselves.

He is being held in a federal detention facility without bond. In October, federal Judge Heather McShain said that Harris “presents a danger to the community” and refused to release him, despite several “Cheer” moms offering to watch over him if released and prevent him from getting on the internet.

“I find the defendant’s past conduct does suggest the likelihood of future misconduct,” McShain said.

Attorneys Morgan Stewart and Sarah Klein, who are representing two brothers who were victimized by Harris’ praised those who made sure that the man was unable to harm another child.

“This was made possible because our clients’ mother initially had the courage to report Harris to the FBI and provided evidentiary proof of the manipulation, sexual harassment, abuse, and exploitation that her sons had suffered,” their statement said.
