Keira Knightley Talks to ‘Variety’ Magazine. Deliberately Avoids Modern-Day Movies Because Of Rape Plots
If I ever see a picture of Keira Knightley out and about, I wonder why the actress is holding a cell phone, or getting out of a car, or wearing pants, because I'm so used to seeing the 32-year-old in dramatic period pieces, smushed into a corset. It's something Knightley confessed to Variety that she used to be embarrassed about, but during an interview about her upcoming movie Colette, she also says there's a reason she's shied away from more contemporary narratives
"I don’t really do films set in the modern day because the female characters nearly always get raped," she told the outlet. "I always find something distasteful in the way women are portrayed, whereas I’ve always found very inspiring characters offered to me in historical pieces."
In a post-Weinstein world, however, and the cultural shift that led up to it, she's seeing a change — like the fact that Colette was even made at all. The story about the sexually liberated French novelist was something director Wash Westmoreland had apparently been trying to bring to the big screen for 15 years.
"I don’t think it’s a surprise that it managed to get funding in the last few years when it had never managed to get funding before," Knightly said. "Women’s stories are suddenly viewed as important."
#MeToo has been a whirlwind for Knightley, as well. As a woman in the industry who "can count four times when I’ve been what I’d say was assaulted in a minor way," and who dealt with a stalker last year, she was still surprised at the scope of the problem. She was discussing it with friends only to discover that "there wasn’t one of us who hadn’t been assaulted at some point."
"I think everyone has battled their fair share of monsters. It’s not just actresses. It’s teachers; it’s lawyers," she continued. "I’m not talking about rape, but I’m talking about the people who had been grabbed in pubs or their breasts had been fondled by somebody they didn’t know or they’d had someone shove a hand up their skirt."
Despite this reckoning, Knightley says she still sees a lack of progress in Hollywood, especially when it comes to telling women's stories — something she spoke about back in 2015.
"Where are the female stories? Where are they? Where are the directors, where are the writers?" she asked Violet magazine at the time. "It's imbalanced, so given that we are half the cinema-going public, we are half the people [who] watch drama or watch anything else, where is that? So yes, I think the pay is a huge thing, but I'm actually more concerned over the lack of our voices being heard."
That's why, in conversation with Variety, she praised movies like Lady Bird, but it doesn't mean we're quite there yet.
"We’re in a period of time in which it all has to come out, " she told the magazine. "Then we need to move forward and figure out how to make sure that it doesn’t happen again."
#RHoA: Is Nene Leakes Starring In A New Tv One Series?
Could “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star NeNe Leakes be appearing in a new series for TV One? According to a recent Instagram post, the reality diva and television actress is part of some new project titled, “UNCNSRD.” That’s “uncensored” folks.
The post features several images of Leakes sitting in a directors chair on stage with the audience as her backdrop. With that said, I have the following questions:
Is this a new version of “Inside the Actor’s Studio”?
Is Nene the host?
Does this have something to do with comedy?
I guess we’ll just have to wait for TV One’s upfronts when all of their new programs, original movies and reality shows will be revealed. One thing I do know is that it’s being shot by my friends at Swirl Films.

#EMPIRE: John Fogerty is angry at Taraji P. Henson Film ‘Proud Mary’ For Using His Song Title…BUT WHY?
*Singer-songwriter John Fogerty isn’t happy with the use of his song “Proud Mary” as the title of Taraji P. Henson’s new movie, saying its premise about a hit woman goes against the nature of the song.
Fogerty posted a message online Thursday affirming the obvious – that the film has nothing to do with him or his song – and that it irks him when people seek to capitalize on the popularity of his music.
Although Fogerty does not own the rights to the song anymore, he’s pissed that no one bothered to ask him about using the tune or what his lyrics mean. He says the song is about “leaving painful, stressful things behind for a more tranquil and meaningful life.”
Henson’s character, by the way, similarly undergoes a change of heart about her chosen occupation.
Screen Gems responded to Fogerty: “We would love Mr. Fogerty to come see the film. He would see that his complaint that the film has nothing to do with the song’s message as ‘a metaphor about leaving painful, stressful things behind for a more tranquil and meaningful life’ is inaccurate. That is precisely what our Mary is looking to do, and [‘Proud Mary’ star] Taraji [P. Henson] nails it perfectly.”
A rep for Screen Gems also told ABC News that the film company worked closely with the music publisher of “Proud Mary” and had fully cleared the rights to use the song, as well as its title and lyrics, in the movie and its marketing.
Read Fogerty’s full message below:
Recorded first in 1968 by Fogerty’s band, Creedence Clearwater Revival, “Proud Mary” was covered twice in 1969 (by Solomon Burke as well as the Checkmates Ltd.) and perhaps most famously in 1970 by Ike and Tina Turner.

According to Justin Timberlake Says He ‘Absolutely’ Made Peace With Janet Jackson After Super Bowl Incident…Do you Believe him?
Justin Timberlake is ready for his big return to the Super Bowl stage. The “Filthy” crooner opened up in a new interview about planning his upcoming halftime show 13 years after he and Janet Jackson made headlines for a now-infamous wardrobe malfunction.
“Naturally, that’s something we talked about,” Timberlake, 36, told Apple Music’s Beats 1 host Zane Lowe in Us Weekly’s exclusive sneak peak. “To be honest, it wasn’t too much of a conversation. It’s just one of those things where you go, like, ‘Yeah, what do you want me to say? We’re not going to do that again!’”
It was revealed last September that the 10-time Grammy winner was finalizing a deal to headline the Super Bowl LII halftime show in Minnesota, and he confirmed the news the following month. He previously performed at the NFL championship event with ’NSync in 2001 and then with Jackson, 51, in 2004. During the latter, Timberlake accidentally exposed the “All for You” songstress’ breast on stage, leading the FCC to implement a five-second broadcast delay during future live performances.
“I stumbled through it, to be quite honest,” Timberlake told Lowe while reflecting upon the controversial gig. “I had my wires crossed, and it’s just something that you have to look back on and go, like, ‘OK, well, you know, you can’t change what’s happened but you can move forward and learn from it.’”
Since then, the former boy bander says he and Jackson have made peace. “Absolutely,” he said. “And I don’t know that a lot of people know that. I don’t think it’s my job to do that because you value the relationships that you do have with people.”
Timberlake’s full interview airs on Beats 1 on Thursday, January 18, at 1 p.m. ET.

Kevin Spacey Accused Of Being Racist On ‘House Of Cards’ Set
In addition to his laundry list of sexual misconduct accusers, the award-winning actor is now being accused of being racist and dropping the “N” bomb on the set of “House of Cards.”
Via Page Six: Earl Blue, the head of VIP Protective Service and Navy veteran, told the Mail exclusively that Spacey would refuse to acknowledge the black team members and made racist remarks.
Blue said Spacey was overheard by some of his employees telling a member of his personal security team, “I don’t want n—–s watching my trailer,” referring to the Netflix show in which he played the lead role, Frank Underwood.
Blue, 51, cited “confidentiality” as the reason why he waited four years to come forward, but told the paper it came “to the point where people are being harmed, enough is enough.”
Blue said his company’s contract was not renewed despite receiving no complaints and being told by representatives of the Knight Takes King– the company that hired them– that they were “really pleased.”
He told the paper that he later learned through a production manager that Spacey said in a conference call that he “did not want n—–s on his set anymore.”
Another source told The Mail that there were break-ins under VIP’s watch—including in Spacey’s trailer. The contract was given to another firm.
Blue denied the account and said he wasn’t given a reason for why his contract was terminated.
A former employee of the VIP Protective Service told the Mail that he has “no particular recollection” of Spacey eliciting racist behavior. Although, he added that Spacey was a “real a–hole” who would get “temperamental.”
Spacey was accused earlier this year of sexual misconduct from more than a dozen people, and has since been dropped by Netflix, as well as a number of other productions.
Just throw the whole Kevin Spacey away!
