B. Scott declines settlement offer from BET!

B. Scott may have lost her initial court battle with BET, but the war with the network is far from over. Reportedly, BET recently offered B. Scott a small settlement to squash the legal drama once and for all. However, B. Scott has turned them down and wants to continue the battle in court.

The drama all began last year when B. Scott, who identifies as transgender, filed a gender identity discrimination lawsuit against BET, claiming that they forced her to ditch her more feminine clothes and wear men’s clothes at last year’s BET Awards where he was an on-air correspondent.

B. Scott lost her case back in April and the responsibility of BET’s lawyer’s fees fell squarely on her shoulders. According to court documents, BET’s attorney’s fees totaled to $279,000 but the network offered to charge B. Scott only $15,000 if she would promise not to appeal the judge’s ruling.

B. Scott has reportedly declined the offer and filed an appeal, as he promised when she first lost the case. “No one will tell me who I should be, how I should present myself, or what I do with my life,” she told TMZ.

BET is now demanding that B. Scott pay at least $150,000 of their attorney’s fees.

I'm not sure how this battle will end, but considering that B. Scott already lost once, I'm not too confident that she’ll win the second time around. Regardless, I commend her for fighting against BET’s alleged gender discrimination against her. But Gurl give it up!

WHOOPS: B. Scott Loses Discrimination Lawsuit Against BET!

A judge ruled that the channel was within its First Amendment rights in denying the androgynous celebrity the right to wear more-feminine attire.

Everyone who knows about B. Scott knows that he has a flair for dressing in glamorous, usually more-feminine, attire.

But a California judge ruled Thursday that BET was entitled to make Scott change from his usual garb to something more “masculine” for last year's BET Awards, TMZ reports. The network ended up pulling the personality from the program.

According to the entertainment site, the judge stated that it is within the network’s First Amendment rights to run its show as it wants, even if that means making someone change clothing.

Scott, of course, is disappointed with the ruling and plans to appeal.

“It disheartens me that the message sent today wasn’t a message of acceptance, but rather [that] it’s acceptable to discriminate against transgender individuals on the basis of their gender identity and expression—and that such discriminatory acts are protected under the first amendment,” he wrote in a statement on his website. “I’m committed to change, progress, human rights and equality for all, and by no means do I feel defeated.”

B.Scott’s Lawsuit Against BET For Allegedly Cross Dressing Gets Ugly

Last summer, we shared some drama that went down behind the scenes at the BET Awards and celebrity blogger B.Scott. Here’s the backstory. BET hired Scott as a style correspondent for the show’s red carpet segment and initially began the night in a tunic, black pants and heels approved by BET management. After the first segment, according to Scott, he was asked to change his hair, clothing and makeup because it was inappropriate. He was replaced by another correspondent and later hit the network with a hefty lawsuit. So what’s the latest? Fast forward to the present day and TMZ has received some interesting BET email exchanges that doesn’t shine a positive light on network. Stephen Hill (BET’s President of Music Programming) allegedly wrote an email before the show stating:

I don’t want ‘looking like a woman B Scott.’  I want tempered B Scott.

BET’s Network Vice President Rhonda Cowan offered to help and allegedly wrote

I can speak to him about being less ‘womanly.’

After Scott went public, sharing his version of what actually happened, it appears the network became concerned. BET producer Stephanie Hodges wrote an email shortly after the broadcast, stating,

He got upset and said he was going to blow this s**t up and call GLAAD.

BET later released a statement formally apologizing

BET Networks embraces global diversity in all its forms and seeks to maintain an inclusive workforce and a culture that values all perspectives and backgrounds. The incident with B. Scott was a singular one with a series of unfortunate miscommunications from both parties. We regret any unintentional offense to B. Scott and anyone within the LGBT community and we seek to continue embracing all gender expressions.

Another alleged damaging email was shared, from BET’s Monique Ware, implying that they were trying to create a ‘spin’ as to why Scott didn’t return after his initial segment.

The spin should be he was late for a live show and subsequently replaced and it would have been awkward in a live show to have the person assuming his role removed and him inserted….Unless we can make public the reason we didn’t want him dressed the way he normally does, I would stay away from suits, suit selections, etc.”

The network also suggests that Scott had been drinking, was unruly, had shown up late, and was wearing garments that were not pre-approved. From what we’re told, Scott is continuing his lawsuit against the network.

BET Formally Apologizes For Forcing Blogger To Change Feminine Clothing!

On Sunday, in the middle of the BET Awards, we announced that blogger B.Scott was allegedly asked to change his feminine clothing, in order to host as a style correspondent on the red carpet. 

The blogger recounted the story in detail, writing:

After interviewing AJ Calloway for my first segment I was literally yanked backstage and told that my look from head to toe “wasn’t acceptable.” They asked me to pull my hair back, they asked me to change my attire. Let’s be clear, I wasn’t wearing a ball gown and stiletto heels. I was wearing long pants, and a long shirt. I was returned to my trailer and forced to change into one of the other outfits while other producers waited outside. I changed quickly and returned to set, only to be told that I had been replaced by Adrienne Bailon and wouldn’t be going on at all. I was hurt. I am hurt. I feel as though at the last minute that someone at BET wasn’t comfortable with someone like me. It’s not just about the fact that BET forced me to pull my hair back, asked me to take off my makeup, made me changed my clothes and prevented me from wearing a heel. It’s more so that from the mentality and environment created by BET made me feel less than and that something was wrong with who I am as a person.

It appears that the network has had a change of heart after The LGBTQ Media Organization GLAAD spoke to them. 

They have released the following statement:

Scott was a singular one with a series of unfortunate miscommunications from both parties. We regret any unintentional offense to B. Scott and anyone within the LGBT community and we seek to continue embracing all gender expressions.
