Samuel L. Jackson covers the latest issue Mr Porter’s THE JOURNAL photographed by Sharif Hamza and styled by Andrew Vottero.
He does not talk grandly about acting as a craft. He says he just wants to entertain and to “put butts in seats”. He has been very successful at the latter. He is the highest-grossing leading actor in Hollywood.
“Because I pick movies that I like, or movies that I would have gone to see when I was a kid – that’s one of the criteria I use sometimes when I’m choosing a movie – I ended up in all these great franchise films, which propelled me into more people’s psyches than, I guess, if I had done a whole bunch of indie films, little bitty films,” he says.
“I don’t need to be in the most serious movie that’s being made,” he says. “I just want to be in the movie that I had the most fun making and that, I hope, people want to see. I’m not trying to change their lives. I’m just trying to make them happy. I’m trying to make them forget what’s going on in their life today and sit there and watch me.”
He prepares for films by thinking deeply about how to make audiences invest in his characters. When he is on set, he does not seek approval or, really, direction, from directors. “I generally end up telling most directors, ‘I’ve seen this movie already and my character is not doing what you want him to do,’” he says with a cackle.
#RHOA: Shereé Whitfield Shares an Update on Her Health and How It’s Affecting Her “Love Life”
Shereé Whitfield’s life has taken some unexpected changes during Season 15 of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. In addition to having a new relationship, she’s also busy with her fashion brand and her family, and she’s on a journey with her health. Fans learned more about her health issues during one of Shereé’s doctor’s appointments on RHOA Season 15 Episode 4, which aired May 28.
“I’m getting older,” she said before noting that she thought menopause would change her cycle. “But these fibroids are awful… It’s f-cking up my love life, [be]cause have you seen my man [Martell Holt]?”
From there, her doctor noted that “the good thing is that there’s so many options” before laying out some treatment plans for the RHOA cast member to “remove just the fibroids.” Her recovery includes no intimacy and no working out for an extended amount of time. “No sex, no exercise — those are my two favorite things,” Shereé jokes in an interview.
And while Shereé did go into the appointment for a serious reason, that doesn’t mean her doctor didn’t take the time to have a little fun with her. During an ultrasound, in which she discovered a “couple lemon-sized fibroids,” she used the serious moment to prank the RHOA cast member about a possible pregnancy. “You’ve been trying,” the doctor teased as she looked at the ultrasound, to which Shereé responded, “Trying for what?”
“I’m just messing with you,” the doctor clarified.
All joking aside, Shereé made it clear in her confessional that now is not the right time for her to have surgery to deal with the fibroids issue. “I don’t really want to have a major surgery,” she said. “I got so much going on, I really need to focus on She by Shereé and growing the business. I don’t really have time to be down for eight weeks. I’m thinking I need to explore more options.”
As previously mentioned, Shereé has been dating Martell Holt, and he has made appearances on RHOA in Season 15 (and he’s caused quite a buzz among the group).
Shereé revealed more about her boyfriend in an interview with Essence: “I think it’s going great with Martell. We’re really good friends. We enjoy our time when we’re together. He makes me laugh so much and that’s one of the things I really like about him. And I’m just kind of taking everything slow and enjoying life. Did I think at this age I would be out here dating? No, absolutely not. But things happen,” she said. “I’m never closed off to finding the one or love. And so I’m just on my journey trying to be intentional and just making sure I got the right person.”
Shereé’s Life as a Grandma
Sheree Kairo Whitfield Grandmother Update 03
While the doctor managed to pull a prank on Shereé about a baby surprise, the RHOA cast member did recently welcome a baby into her life when her son, Kairo Whitfield, became a dad to daughter Mecca Joie. Shereé introduced viewers to her granddaughter earlier this season on RHOA.
She has also opened up about her life as a grandmother when speaking to Essence.
“No, my name is Glamma. She’s going to call me GG, which stands for Gorgeous Glamma. But when I tell you, first of all, it was a total surprise to me. I didn’t plan on being a Glamma this early. But I’m so, so happy she’s here. I mean, me and my family have always been very close and loving, but she brings another element of love and closeness to my family. She is incredible. I mean, she’s growing so fast and I can’t wait. She’s going to be my little partner. That’s what I’m going to call her. We going to run these streets. I cannot wait,” Shereé said. “I can’t even explain. People say when you have a grandbaby that it’s even more special than your children. You put a little more into it. And I did not believe that. She can’t do no wrong by me, probably because I get to send her back every now and then. But she can’t do no wrong. She’s amazing. She’s incredible.”

#HipHopNews: 2Pac Reportedly Wanted The Notorious B.I.G To Join His Thug Life Crew But Diddy Allegedly Blocked The Collaboration
Over the years, numerous legendary stories have circulated about 2Pac, and a recent addition to these tales involves his interest in having Biggie join Thug Life.
During a recent interview on The Art Of Dialogue, Macadoshis, a member of Tupac’s Thug Life crew, revealed details about the desire of these two iconic artists to collaborate and join forces.
“We got an opportunity to meet Big,” Macadoshis said. “We went tour and we was doing the Thug Life tour. We started out at Jack the Rapper and ‘Pac actually bought Big up to the room. We was staying at the Marriott Marquis and Biggie came up to the room and he was hella cool, bro. I remember him being like, real down to Earth. He kicked it with everybody, smoked a blunt with him and we was just chilling with him.”
Macadoshis added that met up happened around the time Thug Life were working on their 1994 Thug Life: Volume 1 album. However, he believes Diddy was the reason why Biggie didn’t join the crew since he was an upcoming artist at the time.
“We was moving forward with the Thug Life album at the same time Big was with Puff. So, it was not a conflict of interest, but I don’t feel like Puff was tryna let Biggie really come over there and do no Thug Life shit at the time while he was working with him,” Macadoshis explained. “He wanted to be the first to break him and bring him out. He only had ‘Party and Bullshit’ out during that time. So I think that’s what really kinda held it up.”
Nevertheless, 2Pac and Biggie ended up going their separate ways which resulted in a fierce rivalry that led to the death of both rappers.
#NBAPLAYOFFS: Miami Heat Advance to NBA Finals After Crushing the Boston Celtics’ Dream of A Historic Comeback
The Miami Heat closed out the Boston Celtics in the NBA’s Eastern Conference Finals on Monday, winning a deciding Game 7 103-84 to advance to the NBA Finals against the Denver Nuggets.
The road victory for the Heat blocked the proud Celtics franchise from becoming the first NBA team to rally to win a seven-game series after losing the first three contests.
“We have some incredible competitors in that locker room. They love the challenge,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.
He added: “They love putting themselves out there in front of everybody. Open to criticism. Open to everything.”
Celtics point guard Malcolm Brodgon said he thought his team played tight and it affected their results on both ends of the court.
“I thought (the Heat) played loose. I thought they really executed on the defensive end,” the league’s Sixth Man of the Year said. “Then offensively they were poised. They weren’t rushed, they weren’t nervous.”
Eighth-seeded Miami had to come through the play-In tournament but has not let its underdog status have any bearing on its impressive playoff run so far.
Against Boston on Monday, Miami forward Jimmy Butler led the way with 28 points while forward Caleb Martin netted 26 points and had 10 rebounds.
Boston shot a frigid 39% from the field as a team, and no Celtic managed to score 20 points in the game.
Many teams have tried, and a few have gotten close, but ultimately all have failed in trying to achieve the comeback of all comebacks, netting 0 for 151 attempts.
Most teams to go down 0-3 didn’t even make it this far.
This Boston squad marks just the fourth team to ever force a Game 7 following a 0-3 start to a series: the New York Knicks forced a Game 7 in the 1951 NBA Finals against the Rochester Royals, the Denver Nuggets pushed it to the brink in the 1994 Western Conference semis against the Utah Jazz and the Portland Trail Blazers almost made history in the 2003 Western Conference first round against the Dallas Mavericks.
The Heat, who have won three NBA titles, most recently in 2013, will face the top-seeded Nuggets in Denver on Thursday.
The Nuggets have not played a game in a week after sweeping the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals last Monday.
Spoelstra’s team took down Giannis Antetokounmpo and the No. 1-seeded Milwaukee Bucks in the first round, before winning a war of attrition against the Knicks in the Eastern Conference semis.
Despite Boston’s impressive regular season record, the No. 2 seed struggled throughout the postseason. It took the Celtics six games to get past the seventh-seeded Atlanta Hawks and another seven to get through the Philadelphia 76ers.
This brought the Heat and the Celtics together in the Eastern Conference Finals. The series has been an incredible display of drama and tension with the momentum ebbing and flowing throughout.
The Heat raced to a 3-0 lead in the series thanks to incredible performances by Butler and the Miami supporting cast.
Butler has been one of the stars of the NBA postseason and continued this form during the early games of the series against the Celtics.
Missing Tyler Herro through injury meant that head coach Erik Spoelstra had to seek other alternatives to support his star man. Up stepped Gabe Vincent and Martin – who have come up big in clutch time and throughout the series.
However, the Celtics won Game 4 and Game 5 in comfortable fashion with Jayson Tatum showing his brilliance in the win-or-go-home games. Back-to-back blowouts meant that Boston took the series back to Miami for Game 6 – the most crucial game of the series so far.
Buoyed by their home crowd support, it looked like the Heat had finally got their momentum back and had enough in the tank to become Eastern Conference champions.
The Heat held a one-point advantage with just three seconds left on the clock, but with the ball in Boston’s hands, it was far from over. As Marcus Smart attempted to splash home a game-winning three, the ball bounced off the rim and Derrick White scored a buzzer-beating putback to edge the game for the Celtics.
“It felt good. Everybody was asking me, ‘Did you get it off?’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, I think so,’ but it was so close, you never know,” White told reporters afterwards. “We’re just happy we won. However, we got to get it done, we got it done, and now it’s on to Game 7.”
Unfortunately for the Celtics, the Game 7 hill was again too steep to overcome.

Williams and husband Alexis Ohanian, 40, are already parents to daughter Olympia, 5.
Just days after revealing that she and Ohanian expecting their second baby at the 2023 Met Gala, the tennis legend uploaded a sweet clip on Instagram that showed them having a sit-down with the 5-year-old to share the exciting news.
"Olympia does not know right now that I am pregnant, so the big reveal will be at the Met, and then before we leave, I'll tell Olympia," Williams said in the video.
"The reason I haven't told her is because she can't keep a secret," the athlete added.
The clip, which also featured behind-the-scenes moments of Williams prepping for the Met Gala, cut off before she could tell her little one the news, though. "Stay tuned … link in bio to subscribe ✨," Williams captioned the clip, teasing that more of the special moment will be shared on YouTube.
The footage included in the video was shot shortly before Williams and her Reddit co-founder husband announced to the world that they were expecting.
Before steeping on the Met Gala's red carpet, Williams shared a carousel of photos on Instagram of herself and Ohanian, where her baby bump could be seen under her attire.
"Was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the 3 of us to the Met Gala," the sports star captioned the photos.
Texas to Become First State to Ban Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Efforts at Public Universities
Texas is poised to become the largest state in the country to eliminate the funding of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (also known as DEI) programs at public universities.
The Texas Tribune reports that lawmakers came to an agreement Saturday to advance legislation that would ban DEI offices, programs and training at publicly funded universities. The measure further stipulates that all hiring at public universities must be “color-blind and sex-neutral" and that schools cannot create diversity offices or hire employees to conduct DEI work.
The measure is expected to be signed into law by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, and will make Texas the second state — following Florida — to ban DEI initiatives in public higher education.
DEI courses have become a hot button topic, particularly among conservatives who argue that the classes will teach white students that they are inferior to their minority peers.
Progressives, however, say that these classes help foster a more inclusive and welcoming environment.
As the Chronicle of Higher Education reports, the passage of the Texas bill will lead to diversity administrators losing their jobs in the next six months, as the law goes into effect.
Students in Texas have argued they, too, will be negatively impacted by the ban on DEI programs, with one graduate student telling the Chronicle, “DEI isn’t just about enrollment. It’s about OK, how can we make sure that this student group feels comfortable enough on this campus — that way they can become part of our larger campus family.”
Earlier this month, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill that will eliminate funding for diversity, equity, and inclusion programs from public universities and prohibit the teaching of critical race theory in general education courses.
"DEI is better viewed as standing for 'discrimination, exclusion and indoctrination,' and that has no place in our public institutions," DeSantis said in signing the bill, according to Florida's Voice News.
Days after the bill was signed into law in Florida, The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People issued a travel advisory for Florida, saying the state and its Republican governor are "openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals."
In a statement, the organization specifically cited the elimination of DEI programs at state universities, adding: "Before traveling to Florida, please understand that the state of Florida devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by African Americans and other communities of color."
Education has become a hot-button topic heading into the 2024 presidential election, with Republican-backed legislatures around the country passing bills to govern which bathrooms students use or what they speak about in classrooms (which has led to an uptick in book bans at school libraries around the country).
Tasha K Files for Bankruptcy Amid Owing Cardi B $3 Million
Cardi B started making good on collecting her money from blogger Tasha K, so she filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Tasha K, whose real name is Latasha Kebe, filed a petition in Florida to file for bankruptcy this week and has listed her assets as in the $50k-$100k range. This is a far cry from the $3 million she owes the rapper.
Tasha K was ordered to pay Cardi after being found guilty of defamation against Cardi. Her asses are listed as A 2021 Chevrolet Silverado worth $46k, $2750 worth of furniture, $500 worth of electronics, $2,500 worth of clothes including 2 Louis Vuitton purses, and a Coach person.
She also has some jewelry that’s worth $6k. This includes her engagement and wedding ring. She also has a checking account at Chase Bank with less than $100 in it.
Besides being indebted to the “Up” rapper, Tasha K’s debt also includes $53k owed on the car, an undisclosed amount in back taxes to the IRS, $6k to American Express, some legal fees, $3k to Bank of America, $3.38 million owed to Cardi, $5k owed to Discover Bank.
She shares that what she does have is about $13k, and her husband brings in about $17k; she is also a mom of two, and most of that money goes to the household, leaving her with about $7k to play around with.
She made her most money in 2021 with $156,000, in 2022, she made $134,000. None of this has phased the rapper, who has put even more effort into getting her money from Tasha K in the last few months.
Tamar Braxton Reflects on Her Mental Health Struggles and Months of Battling ‘Trigger After Trigger’
During the month of May an increased amount of awareness is brought to mental health and the traumatic impact it can potentially have on any individual’s mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
That reality isn’t lost on singer Tamar Braxton during Mental Health Awareness Month, who has chosen to speak out about her personal struggles with mental health and dealing wiht “trigger after trigger” over the last few months.
The “Love and War” vocalist was recently a guest speaker for the nonprofit organization “Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice: Survivors Speak,” in California, where she talked about how she overcame the personal thoughts that often consumed her mind.
In a clip shared on both Braxton’s and the organization’s respective Instagram pages, she can be heard telling an audience that her first step was realizing the power she held to withstand any obstacle.
“I had to make the decision to want to survive first,” the 46-year-old said. “To really grasp the fact that it was truly my decision. It was my decision to get up out of bed. Although I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression, it was still a decision to override my mind.”

She continued, “And not allow my mind to run my life. And I put all my feelings into those things that didn’t serve me.”
The one-minute clip positively revealed how Braxton improved her mindset and her caption disclosed her recent struggles over the past few months.
“It’s mental health awareness month and I have to be honest with you guys,” she wrote. “I AM STRUGGLING!!! I have been triggered since December 2022.. and it seems like it’s been trigger after trigger.”
Braxton also explained how each trigger is a considerable offense “that would make me go back to my old 1.0 low vibrational Tamar that I frankly CaN NOT STAND!!”
The mother of one shared that she’s taking the necessary steps to become better and that she speaks positive affirmations to herself. “This time next year I will not be here… and the years after that I’ll be better and better.”
She then added words of encouragement to those who relate with her, stating that trouble doesn’t always last, and that God will guide them through this journey.
“God is bigger and he has installed all the things that You need inside of you to make yourself better!! WE GOT THIS!! Be kind to yourselves. I love you,” Braxton closed.
The outpouring of love from fans and other celebrities quickly flooded her comments section. One of Braxton’s “Queens Court” hosts, Holly Robinson Peete, is one of many people on social media who sent an array of red heart emojis her way.
Other users penned supportive messages such as, “Tamar you are stronger than you think you are an inspiration to many people. You have put in the work and you are still trying stay focused.”
Another comment read, “I love you Tamar. I will always support you and never judge you. Riding with you through thick and thin.”
Braxton’s fiancé, Jeremy “JR” Robinson, also wrote a sweet comment, thanking her for sharing her journey while also reminding the “My Man” songstress that she’s not alone.
“God needs warriors who can endure and be a seed for the masses to create harvest. You are chosen and God has covered you,” he wrote. “Thank you for sharing your story – this will help so many people. You are also not alone! I love you and I’m here for you – through it all!”
Earlier this year, Braxton revealed limiting her alcohol intake as a way to positively benefit her mental health. Her latest song, “Changed,” also shines a light on mental health and how one chooses to positively love herself.
Throughout the past few months, Braxton has found herself in public disputes with different figures in the industry.
Her most notable feud involved Xscape singer Kandi Burruss. Their back-and-forth beef reignited after the “Celebrity Big Brother” winner accused Burruss and her husband, Todd Tucker, of threatening her months prior.
In mid-May, Braxton also threw shade at Jason Lee for including her name in the brewing drama between Burruss and her “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” co-star Marlo Hampton.
Pedro Pascal Says He Got Eye Infection From Fans Recreating 'Game Of Thrones' Death
Pedro Pascal shared on The Hollywood Reporter's Drama Actors Roundtable that he once got an eye infection from taking photos with fans who wanted to recreate his most memorable Game of Thrones scene.
Game of Thrones spoilers ahead: Pascal played Oberyn Martell, who brutally died when his eyes were gouged out by The Mountain with his thumbs in Season 4.
"I remember, early, because of Game of Thrones and the way that my character died, people were super into taking selfies with their thumbs in my eyes," Pascal said at the 2:13 mark. "At first, I was so, kind of, earnest and happy about the success of the character in the show, and I would let them...in New York, of all places!"
"I ended up getting a little bit of an eye infection," he added.
Following his death in Game of Thrones, Pascal went on to play former DEA agent Javier Peña in the Netflix series Narcos before taking on leading small screen roles as Din Djarin in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian and Joel in HBO's video game adaptation The Last of Us.
According to Deadline, Pascal is in final negotiations to join the star-studded cast, which includes Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal and Barry Keoghan, of a sequel to the 2000 film Gladiator.

Gospel Artist Deitrick Haddon Defends Wife After Twerking Birthday Surprise Sparks Controversy
When did it become an issue for a wife to dance on her husband? Apparently, when you’re a gospel artist.
Deitrick Haddon, the amazing Christian artist and pastor, is standing up for his wife, Dominique Mctyer, after they faced controversy over a viral video clip from his 50th birthday bash. It's all because some of his super conservative followers couldn't handle Dominique twerking on her man!
The clip above made some of Deitrick’s more conservative followers raise their eyebrows at the sight of Dominique twerking on her man.
Well, the "Preachers of L.A." star isn’t having none of that negativity. He took to social media to clap back at the "hollified" haters and dropped some wisdom bombs. He reminded everyone that despite different opinions, they all should be respected, even within the church.
“The next level for the church is to learn to disagree without disrespect,” Deitrick began in a post. “Some approve with me dancing in public with my wife, and others don’t and that’s ok. In the words of the Stylistics, ‘People make the world go ’round.'”
He continued, “It would be so dope if we could celebrate our differences instead of demonizing everyone that doesn’t think like you. I still love ya, and there’s nothing you can do about it!” Swipe above to see his post.
In response, one of his followers wrote, “When you are a Pastor, you are suppose to live above reproach. You are suppose to be Holy and set apart for the master's use. You are not suppose to allow yourself to be used by the devil. Where is the fear of God? You are leading people down the wrong road. You are forgetting who you suppose to be representing. You can't say you delivered, because you and your wife showed the whole world, you you serving. My advice to you is to repent and turn from your ways. We living in the last days and this is how you wanna live and represent Jesus Christ? Lord have mercy. Praying for you and your wife. (Repent)”
Another person wrote, “It wasn’t just about the dancing. The Lewd music everything. It’s just strange to see a pastor and First Lady carry on the same way non believers do. Definitely in the flesh.”
Some followers felt otherwise, with one person writing, “Y’all in these comments are really upset and it’s baffling to me. They are MARRIED!!!!! They weren’t p- popping on a handstand with a strangers. They weren’t doing this in front of a congregation on a Sunday morning. They were at a BIRTHDAY PARTY! Y’all are so bound up! And they people with the loudest opinions are single [laughing emojis] y’all be blessed. Thank you Mr. Haddon for showing young and old people that you can enjoy life in a safe way and still love and serve a true and living God."
Another person wrote, “Its a beautiful thing to be able to openly dance with your own wife in the way that makes you both happy. Too many 'saints' doing all kinds of wrong things behind the scenes and painting different images of themselves in front of everyone. Please dont stop being expressive with one another. I applaud your authenticity! Happy birthday in arrears!”
In another IG post, Deitrick shared a photo of his wife with the caption, “Thank you @domerella for being you. You a straight Rider!!” On her photo, he wrote “My rider all day!!” with Tupac’s “Ambitionz az a Ridah” as the back ground music.
Hmm…do you think folks were holy hating or was Deitrick and his wife out of line?
