#MusicNews: Brian McKnight Tributes Kobe Bryant On New Song “Can’t Say Goodbye”!
R&B crooner Brian McKnight was significantly impacted like the rest of the world by the loss of superstar Kobe Bryant. He pays tribute to the basketball legend with the heartfelt ballad “Can’t Let Go”.
LISTEN HERE
Believe it or not, these two had actually collaborated on music together previously. As McKnight reminds us all on a post on his Instagram account, the once aspiring rapper Kobe Bryant appeared on the Trackmasters Remix to his song “Hold Me” in 1999. The original version of that song was on McKnight’s “Anytime” album.
#HipHopNews: Nicki Minaj To Introduce Queen Sleeze Alter Ego On New Album!
Nicki Minaj is introducing a new alter ego on her next album. Fresh off the release of her new song “Yikes,” the rap queen held a Twitter Q&A with fans on Saturday morning. During the discussion, she revealed that the album will feature her newest alter ego, Queen Sleeze.
When a fan asked whether the album will introduce a new alter ego, Nicki responded “Queen Sleeze” with the devil emoji.
Mrs. Petty offered more details on Queen Sleeze’s personality. “She’s more calm but way deadlier,” said Nicki. “My husband always says he’s more afraid when I talk quiet then when I yell. Lmao. He said that’s how he knows when I’m dead tf serious.”
Minaj is known for her colorful alter egos, many of whom have appeared on her albums including Harajuku Barbie, Roman Zolanski, and Nicki Lewinsky.
Elsewhere, she revealed that she has a title for her fifth album, but won’t reveal it yet. She only offered a hint with the sneezing emoji.
Earlier in the week, she spoke about the follow-up to 2018’s Queen during a conversation with her manager Irving Azoff at Pollstar Live! She said she’s in a good place “mentally and spiritually,” which will be reflected in the music. “I feel like albums should be a surprise sonically with what they can expect, but they can expect to feel like, ‘OK, Nicki’s in a good place,'” she said.
“Yikes” dropped Friday and is already No. 1 on the iTunes Store, but it’s not the album’s first single. “It’s not my single because the single will be launched with a visual. This is the set-up song,” explained Nicki.
Rihanna Addresses ‘R9’ Delay!
It’s been four years since Rihanna’s last album and fans have been growing impatient. But she’s not about to share an update. In fact, the singer had some fun antagonizing her Navy when asked about the long-awaited project, dubbed R9, during a recent interview with “ET.”
“Dot dot dot. To be continued,” said RiRi, miming three dots with her fingers. “I like to antagonize my fans a little bit. Well, they antagonize me, too! So, they get it right back.”
Earlier in the week, she jokingly clapped back at fans who keep asking about R9 on Instagram. “Where is the album?” asked one commenter, to which Ri responded, “Why have I never seen this one before?”
In an interview with Vogue last year, Rihanna shared more details about the follow-up to 2016’s ANTI. “I like to look at it as a reggae-inspired or reggae-infused album,” she said. “It’s not gonna be typical of what you know as reggae.”
The world’s richest female artist was in NYC on Friday for the launch of her Fenty brand at Bergdorf Goodman where she gushed about receiving support from her peers including Teyana Taylor.
“It really shocks me, the people that reach out. I feel so, like, ‘Wow!’ Even Teyana Taylor! She’s like, ‘I want those Wasabi pants!’ And I’m like, ‘I got you, girl!'” she said. “And to see the celebrities that didn’t reach out to ask for stuff, but went to the store, or went online, and bought it — it makes me feel really, really great. Because I’m one of those celebrities that when I see something I like, I just go buy it. So to feel supported by my peers, it’s a big deal.”
Luke Perry Was Left Out of Oscars In Memoriam!
Luke Perry was left out of the In Memorium feature during the 2020 Academy Awards.
The late actor, who passed away in March last year at only 52, was skipped in the feature, which honors entertainers who made a contribution to the arts.
Kobe Bryant, Kirk Douglas, Diahann Carroll, Danny Aiello, and many others were highlighted and fans aren’t happy about Luke being omitted, considering he was in Once Upon A Time…in Hollywood, which was nominated for Best Picture at the event.
“Luke Perry’s last movie was Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The man was more talented than most current actors’ left pinky. Can’t throw his photo up for .4 seconds at the Oscars? That’s some bulls***,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
Another added, “Luke Perry was in an Oscar nominated movie this year this omission is insane.”
“luke perry walked so literally every young adult heart throb has a chance to even set a foot out,” one commented.
“Once Upon Time in Hollywood was nominated for 8.2 million awards, so someone explain to me why Luke Perry wasn’t in In Memoriam?” another exclaimed.
Luke was mentioned and honored during the in memoriam tributes at the 2019 Emmy Awards and the 2020 SAG Awards.
‘Hair Love’ Oscar Winners Celebrate Representation; Matthew Cherry Dedicates It To Kobe Bryant!
Two years ago, Kobe Bryant took the stage at the Academy Awards to accept, alongside Glen Keane, the Best Animated Short Film award for Dear Basketball. The Oscar win for his personal project came less than a year after the NBA great had retired from the sport.
Tonight, another former professional athlete who segued to an entertainment career, former NFL player Matthew A. Cherry, accepted the Best Animated Short Film Oscar for a personal project, Hair Love. In his speech, Cherry dedicated the award to Bryant, who died tragically two weeks ago.
“This award is dedicated to Kobe Bryant,” said Cherry who also paid tribute to Bryant at pre-Oscar events. “May we all have a second act as great as his was.”
Hair Love, voiced by Issa Rae, follows an African-American father’s first attempt to do his daughter’s hair. It stems from Cherry’s desire to promote hair love among young people of color. Like Cherry’s features 9 Rides and The Last Fall, Hair Love originated with a Kickstarter campaign in 2017.
“Hair Love was done because we wanted to see more representation in animation. We wanted to normalize black hair,” the film’s writer, co-director and producer Cherry said tonight.
Added Hair Love producer Karen Rupert Toliver, who accepted the award with Cherry, “It was a labor of love, and it was because we have a firm belief that representation matters deeply. Especially in cartoons, because in cartoons that’s when we first see our movies and it’s how we shape our lives and think about how we see the world.”
During his speech, Cherry acknowledged DeAndre Arnold, who was his guest at the Oscars. The senior at Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu, Texas, made national headlines a couple of weeks ago when he was told by school officials that he wouldn’t be able to walk at his graduation if he didn’t cut his dreadlocks. During a recent appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Arnold explained that he had refused to cut his hair out of appreciation for his Trinidadian ancestry.
Evoking Arnold, Cherry used his speech to rally support for The Crown Act. Last summer, California became the first state to ban discrimination against black students and employees over their natural hairstyles.
“There’s a very important issue that’s out there; it’s the Crown Act,” Cherry said. “And if we can help to get this passed in all 50 states, it will help stories like DeAndre Arnold’s, who’s our special guest tonight, stop to happen.” (You can watch the full speech above.)
Following the Oscar win, Cherry retweeted a 2016 tweet he had posted when he was trying to find collaborators to help him get the “Oscar worthy short film” Hair Love made. It quickly went viral.
Cherry and Hair Love‘s win got a big reaction on Twitter, with Ava DuVernay among those who sent congratulations.
Since distributor Sony Pictures Animation released Hair Love on YouTube in December, the short has amassed more than 15.3 million views
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Definition Of Love” Note For Sale At $42K!
In the mid-1960s, an admirer asked Dr. King his meaning of love. Nearly 55 years later, his scribbled down answer is up for auction —selling for $42,000. The memorabilia company, Moments in Time currently owns the historic document.
According to The Union Journal, the note was originally acquired from a souvenir dealer in London who had no idea the value of the note.
The note reads, ”Love is the greatest force in the universe. It is the heartbeat of the moral cosmos. He who loves is a participant in the being of God.”
Outside of some inscribed books and parchment, there is not much out there written in the civil rights icon’s handwriting. So coming across such a rare memento is very valuable.
There are no details on where or how Moments in Time will go about the sale at this point.
#BoxOfficeNews: 'Birds of Prey' fails to take flight at the box office!
While everyone's looking at the Oscars, it could be a good time to bury the news that Birds of Prey's box office debut was pretty lacklustre.
The DC spin-off from Suicide Squad - full title Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) - premiered on Thursday last week in the States, but despite an extra weekend day on release, pulled in just over $33 million (£25.5 million) in the US.
That makes it the lowest launch for the DC Extended Universe, falling short of previous title-winner Shazam, which debuted to $53 million.
According to reports, that's nearly half of what Warner Bros was hoping for.
And while it picked up a little pace abroad, opening in 78 markets and making $81.3 million (£63 million) in all, it's still significantly south of expectations for the studio.
Sources tell Variety that the movie will have to make in excess of $100 million before it breaks even, and while that's certainly in its sights, it doesn't look like Birds of Prey will be the blockbuster it was hoped.
The studio has noted that the outbreak of coronavirus in Asia has heavily impacted on movie-going figures.
Several movies, including Dolittle and 1917, have had their releases in China axed for the time being due to the closure of cinemas while the outbreak is contained.
Directed by Cathy Yan, the movie picks up Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn character from Suicide Squad, now free of her toxic relationship with Jared Leto's Joker, and embarking on a new phase of anti-heroineism.
With cohorts Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Gotham City detective Renee Montoya, played by Rosie Perez, she takes on Ewan McGregor's Black Mask.
But it seems that decent reviews have failed to convert into box office gold, making Birds of Prey potentially another financial misstep in the DCEU’s chequered CV.
Q From 112 Responds To Ma$e And Diddy Conflict “I’m In The Same Situation”!
Apparently, Ma$e is not the only former Bad Boy artist that feels slighted by Diddy and his questionable business practices. Quinnes “Q” Parker, formerly of 112, shares with TMZ that he’s in a similar predicament as Ma$e and wants the other half of his publishing back too. He also feels Diddy is being a bit hypocritical when he demanded better treatment of black artists from the Grammys, yet he allegedly “enslaved” his own black artists.
Q made a suggestion to young artists about signing contracts without full knowledge of what you’re signing and even admitted that legally speaking, Diddy did nothing wrong in regards to signing 112 or Mase because the contracts they signed were pretty standard in the industry back in the ’90s. But ultimately, Q wants out of his Bad Boy deal as well; he’s just opting to take a less public approach than Ma$e.
What do y’all think about this whole Bad Boy situation?
Snoop Dogg: I didn't threaten Gayle King, but her Kobe Bryant remarks were 'disrespectful'!
The rapper attempted to clarify his statement that King should "back off, b----, before we come get you" for asking about Bryant's rape allegation.
Snoop Dogg said Saturday he wasn't threatening Gayle King when he said King should "back off, b----, before we come get you" for mentioning Kobe Bryant's rape allegation.
In an Instagram video with the caption "P. S. A. From the peoples champ now carry on and be nice to others," the rapper said he's a "non-violent person" and was just pointing out that King's line of questioning was "disrespectful" in the wake of the NBA legend and his daughter, 13-year-old Gianna Bryant, dying in a helicopter crash.
"When I said what I said, I spoke for the people who felt like Gayle was very disrespectful towards Kobe Bryant and his family," Snoop Dogg said.
"Now with that being said, what do I look like, wanting some harm to come to a 70-year-old woman? I was raised way better than that. I don’t want no harm to come to her and I didn’t threaten her. All I did was say, ‘Check it out, you outta pocket for what you doing and we watching you. Have a little bit more respect for Vanessa, her babies and Kobe Bryant’s legacy.’”
The video was referencing an Instagram post from Wednesday in which Snoop Dogg criticized King for asking retired WNBA star Lisa Leslie in an interview on "CBS This Morning" if she thought Kobe Bryant's legacy was "complicated" by a 2003 sexual assault charge.
"What do you gain from that? I swear to god, we the worst. We the f------ worst," he said in the Wednesday video. "We expect more from you, Gayle," he said in the Wednesday video. "Why y’all attacking us? We your people! You ain’t come after f------ Harvey Weinstein, asking them dumb-ass questions. I get sick of y'all."
After insulting King with more expletives, he ended the video with "back off, b----, before we come get you."
Bryant was accused in 2003 of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old hotel employee in Colorado. He was charged with rape, but the case was dropped after the accuser declined to testify. A civil suit was later settled. The NBA star, who married his wife, Vanessa, in 2001, admitted to having had sex with the woman, but insisted that it was consensual.
King has been receiving death threats over her Kobe Bryant question, according to Oprah Winfrey, King's best friend.
Jennifer Lopez fans joke about ‘stealing an Oscar’ award after ‘Hustlers’ snub!
Jennifer Lopez fans created a meme during the 2020 Oscars to show their unwavering support for the snubbed “Hustlers” star
The meme, which shows a giant Oscar statue being removed from the red carpet, was jokingly captioned, “THEY’RE STEALING IT FOR JENNIFER LOPEZ.” Meanwhile, another Lopez fan wrote, “Which way to JLo’s house?,” and a separate follower added, “Me running out with the Best Supporting Actress award to go give to @JLo.”
Leading up to the awards show, the 50-year-old was buzzed to garner a nomination for her role as swindling stripper Ramona in “Hustlers,” but she ultimately did not earn a nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category.
However, the entertainer still appeared to be in good spirits on Sunday night. She did not attend the show, but got all dolled up for a party that evening. She captioned a pic of herself in full glam, “Dance the night away, live your life and stay young on the floor,” referencing her lyrics from “On the Floor.”
Laura Dern won Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Marriage Story.”
Two NYPD Officers Shot In The Bronx Within 12 Hours, Suspect In Custody!
Two NYPD officers were shot within 12 hours in the Bronx after a suspect went on a rampage.
A Lieutenant was wounded Sunday morning, 12 hours after the suspect had ambushed two officers, injuring one-all from the same precinct.
According to NBC News, law enforcement sources confirm a man was taken into custody around 8 a.m. Sunday, immediately following the latest shooting in the 41st precinct. The suspect reportedly walked into the 41st precinct headquarters, fired at officers, then placed his gun on the floor and surrendered.
This recent attack comes after a night of terror as the same suspect, identified as Robert Williams, allegedly approached two officers sitting inside a marked police van on Saturday night around 8:30 p.m., engaged them in conversation, then randomly pulled out a gun and fired at the officers.
Williams then stormed into the 41st Precinct station house on Longwood Avenue around 8 a.m. and opened fire, “He immediately pulls out a gun and fires multiple rounds towards the desk area,” said Shea in a press briefing. “He then walks into an area beside that desk and fires several rounds,” Commissioner Dermot Shea said.
Shea noted that Williams was previously convicted of attempted murder in 2002 — in an incident which also involved a shoot-out with cops.
In that incident, Williams shot a person, carjacked a passing motorist, crashed the vehicle, and then traded bullets with the NYPD before his apprehension.
According to Mayor Bill de Blasio, the lieutenant shot this morning was hit in the arm, and the officer who was shot last night was in stable condition as of 10 a.m.
