RuPaul for Interview Magazine September 2019
Justice Is Served: A Conversation Between Rupaul And Judge Judy for Interview Magazine
“We’re all born naked. And the rest is drag.” Decades before building his own media empire, even before his reign in the 1990s as one of downtown New York’s most exciting nightlife queens, an 11-year-old RuPaul Andre Charles sat down at his home in San Diego, California, to watch Monty Python’s Flying Circus, when suddenly, everything clicked. The British comedy troupe was silly and liberated and contemptuous of the status quo, and, as Charles once told Oprah, “That’s what this is all about.”

The “this” to which Charles was referring could be any number of things: his music career, which started in 1993 with the release of his debut album, Supermodel of the World; his fashion career, which has included the launch of a unisex fragrance, Glamazon, and a longstanding relationship with MAC cosmetics; or his television career, made up of talk shows, a game show, and, most famously, RuPaul’s Drag Race, a groundbreaking reality competition series that has earned Charles four Primetime Emmy Awards and legions of fans, both from the queer fringes and the cultural mainstream. In truth, he was likely referring to all of those things and more—his podcast (RuPaul: What’s the Tee?, with his close friend and fellow Drag Race judge Michelle Visage), his bicoastal conventions (RuPaul’s DragCon), and, coming soon, his scripted Netflix series AJ and the Queen, in which Charles plays an unconventional guardian to a runaway and which he co-created with Michael Patrick King, the man behind contemporary classics such as Sex and the City and The Comeback.
As Charles told his friend and idol Judge Judith Sheindlin over the phone in June, “Drag reminds people that all artifice is temporary—that all structures are just temporary, and the only thing that stays real is the energy.” That, and a healthy serving of charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent.

RUPAUL: You know, I’ve learned so many Yiddish words from watching your television program. One of them is a word that even a lot of people who speak Yiddish don’t know, so I’m going to ask you if I’m saying it correctly: geshikhte. I looked it up, because you once told someone, “Listen, I don’t need to hear a whole geshikhte story here.”

JUDGE JUDY: It’s the difference between reading the Cliff Notes and having to read the whole book.

RUPAUL: Am I saying it right? Geshikhte? I have an app that gives me a Yiddish word of the day.

JUDGE JUDY: Incorporating Judaism into your personality is maybe something you don’t need.

RUPAUL: You know, it’s who I am. I love when cultures and words get mashed up. That’s what makes life interesting. The whole Andy Warhol aesthetic is about mashing up the old with the new to create an entirely new movement. What drag queens do is an identity mash-up. We are men who are doing this superficial, plastic feminine ideal. Drag reminds people that all artifice is temporary—that all structures are just temporary, and the only thing that stays real is the energy.

JUDGE JUDY: It’s like having a white room and adding a splash of something that doesn’t belong.
RUPAUL: It’s funny that we sat next to each other on that plane from New York to Los Angeles all those years ago. I’d been following you before that, but there was a similarity between us that could not be ignored.

JUDGE JUDY: Who would have thought that 20 years later we would be sitting and having this conversation?

RUPAUL: It really has been a fantastic journey. You know, if you live long enough, everything happens to you—the good, the bad, and the ugly.

JUDGE JUDY: Maybe. I haven’t had too much of the bad and the ugly—knock on wood—but I did do my homework before this conversation, and I found out some things about you that, quite frankly, I did not know.

RUPAUL: Uh-huh?

JUDGE JUDY: For instance, I didn’t know that you got married, and that you and your husband had been together for 20 years before that. Tell me, is there a difference to you between living together and being married?

RUPAUL: The difference is really minimal. I met Georges [LeBar] right on the dance floor at the Limelight disco at 6th Avenue and 21st Street on his birthday in 1994. We’ve had our ups and downs and everything in between, and there isn’t a person on this planet I like being around more than him.

JUDGE JUDY: I didn’t meet my husband on the dance floor, I met him at a bar. I walked up to him and I put my finger in his face and said to one of the guys I knew who was standing there, “Who is this?” And he said to me, “Lady, get your finger out of my face.” [RuPaul laughs.] It’s so nice to have that comfortable relationship to come home to, even if it’s once every two or three weeks—because Georges lives in Wyoming, is that correct?

RUPAUL: We see each other about every three weeks. But, you know, we’re adults. We can handle it.

JUDGE JUDY: It’s nice to know that wherever you are, there’s that home anchor. Somebody who’s got your back.

RUPAUL: Someone you know is going to be looking out for your best interests, no matter what. That’s really key. And if you actually like each other, even better.
JUDGE JUDY: You can like a lot of people. The special part is when you love them even if you don’t like them.

RUPAUL: It’s like traveling cross-country with someone—if you can still speak to that person at the end of the trip, you are friends forever.

JUDGE JUDY: So you got married in 2017, and then, in 2018, you got a star on the Walk of Fame. That had to have been a sign that RuPaul had gone mainstream.

RUPAUL: Well, my vision of drag is that we’re all born naked and the rest is drag. It’s kind of an existential vision, and it has to do with breaking the fourth wall and seeing yourself from outside of yourself. That’s my drag. But the drag that’s become popular with young people around the world is the surface part of the experience, like, “Oh, pretty makeup. I like her outfit.” So I don’t think drag itself has become mainstream. The superficial part of it has, but the deeper message, which is that we are all extensions of the power that created the universe, is the part that’s not there yet. But, you know, I’m from San Diego, and when I was a kid, we used to come up here to Los Angeles to visit my cousins, and I would always ask to be able to walk down Hollywood Boulevard because I was enamored of fame and all that jazz. As a kid, I knew that the true mark of a legend was having a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I’ve been famous for a long time and I’ve had lots of accolades, but that was a really special one for me.

JUDGE JUDY: Because?

RUPAUL: Because it spoke to that little kid who still lives inside of me. You know, on my new show, AJ and the Queen, my character parents an 11-year-old child, so I was able to really emotionally revisit myself as a kid. It was a trip. I’ve never done anything like that before. It was the most challenging thing for me as an actor and as a human. The big thing for me is that I wish I’d learned how to process feelings earlier. The human body is kind of like a computer program, and a lot of the feelings that I felt were based on the experiences I’d had. Knowing that feelings are not facts was a message I wish that 11-year-old Ru had heard. As I’ve gotten to this stage in my life, I think being able to understand how fortunate you are is a great gift. I feel fantastic. I have my health. I have a good outlook. There have been some great achievements in my career and some really low lows, so I’m not afraid of them. I know that I have an ability to create magic because I have my health and I have an equilibrium. By the way, this is why I’ve tuned into Judge Judy every single day for the past twenty-something years, because it’s like going to the chiropractor to get an adjustment. It’s a reality check, and it’s a great tool for someone like me who’s super sensitive in a world that becomes so overwhelming. That’s why I tune in every day at four o’clock here in Los Angeles.

JUDGE JUDY: Thank you for that. I will count you on my Nielsen ratings.

RUPAUL: I have a folder on my computer of pictures of people I admire, and there’s a Judith Sheindlin folder. One of those pictures is when you got your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

JUDGE JUDY: Merv Griffin was the person who spoke when I got my star, and he, to me, was the kind of person who had a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame—not some Jewish kid from Brooklyn who became a lawyer. For me, Ru, it was a little different because my childhood dream was not to be a star. From what I know about you, you always knew you were a star. The world just had to catch up.

RUPAUL: Exactly.

JUDGE JUDY: If I had to define you in two words, they would be “honest” and “flamboyant.” That’s who you are. The fun of you is who you are. And that’s why I think we like each other, because I, too, know who I am. Our messages are the same, really, which is that you have to really like yourself.
RUPAUL: It’s the only game in town, honestly, because when you find your own rhythm, when you find your own frequency, that is your gift to humanity. It’s your life’s work.

#RHOA: Awwww, Kandi Burruss Serenades Her Hubby Todd and He is in his Feels!
Producer Todd Tucker said he tried his best to “play it cool” as his wife, reality star and R&B songstress Kandi Burruss, serenaded him at a recent event. The sentimental moment was enough to leave both fans and Tucker a bit misty-eyed.
Tucker shared a photo of the occasion on Instagram, where friends and fans poked fun at him for struggling to keep it together.
“Don’t panic bro, Never let them see you sweat 😭😭😭😭” one fan wrote.
Pulling a line from the 1995 film “Friday,” another fan joked: “‘He gon cry in da car’ 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.”
😂😂 You can’t hide that smile @todd167. I love it💙,” another added, pointing out the producer’s failed efforts to remain cool as a cucumber.
“@todd167 Ain’t no cool my brotha…that soul gets touched when @kandi starts singing. 😂🙌🏽🙏🏽,” one more commented.
Another fan agreed, encouraging the reality star to “just let the love wash over you and get emotional if you want too!”

Tucker, who co-owns the popular Old Lady Gang restaurant in Atlanta, recently celebrated a birthday and his wife of 5 years doesn’t seem to be slowing up on showering him with love.
The couple likes to keep things fun and interesting in their relationship and doesn’t mind letting the world see.
The couple started dating in 2011 as Burruss filmed the fourth season of the “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” on which Tucker worked as a line producer. Burruss announced their engagement in January 2013 and they officially tied the knot the following year.

The two now share a son, 3-year-old Ace, along with Burruss’ daughter Riley,  and Tucker’s daughter, Kayla, both from previous relationships.

#Empire: Vivica A. Fox Will be a Series Regular For the Final Season!
There was a lot of news coming out at TCA regarding the sixth and final season of Fox’s musical drama Empire, including possible spinoffs and that Jussie Smollett would not be returning for the last hurrah. But one character that will be returning is Cookie’s older sister Candace played by Vivica A. Fox.
It was a given that Candace would return for the sixth season, considering she has appeared in every since she was introduced in season two, but Fox will now be appearing as a series regular instead of recurring.

During TCA, Fox told Deadline that she knew from the get-go she wanted to work with Lee Daniels as well as Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard, who she had known for years and was more than happy to play Cookie’s (Henson) older sister.
Fox said that each year she has been on the show has grown and grown and that last season Candace went through a lot during her time in the Empire universe, but her huge storyline focused on mental health and abuse. We thought her character was being abused by her husband, but it was actually her son that was abusing her due to mental health issues.

“One thing I love about Empire is that they tackle taboo subjects that other shows won’t,” said Fox. “Now that I have been made a series regular, I want to find out more about my son and what’s going on — I don’t know yet so don’t ask!”

Fox said that she will head to Chicago at the end of August to shoot the final season. The sixth season of Empire is slated to debut on September 24.

#HipHopNews: Cardi B says she Believes JAY-Z Can Bring Colin Kaepernick Back To The NFL
Cardi B has faith in JAY-Z. In a new interview with TMZ, the multi-platinum selling artist said she thinks Hov can make a change in the NFL and even get Colin Kaepernick back in the league.
“I feel like JAY-Z could bring back Colin Kaepernick,” she told TMZ. “I feel so. I feel like he has that power.”
Cardi shared her opinion on Hov’s influence after being asked about the Roc Nation boss’ recent partnership with the NFL, which has been under scrutiny since it was announced. Critics have taken issue with Kaepernick’s lack of involvement in the deal and questioned JAY’s motives.
As part of the agreement, Roc Nation will serve as the NFL’s “live music entertainment strategist.” JAY is also getting involved in the league’s social justice initiative Inspire Change and may reportedly become a co-owner of an NFL team.

The partnership marked a dramatic change from JAY’s past rejections to working with the NFL as a public supporter of Kaepernick. He reportedly encouraged other artists such as Travis Scott to not perform at the Super Bowl halftime show too.
Since becoming a free agent in 2017, Kap has been out of the league. He’s widely believed to have been blackballed for kneeling during the playing of the national anthem in protest of racial injustice.
Earlier this year, he reached a settlement with the NFL after accusing its owners of colluding to keep out him out of the league.
On Sunday (August 18), Kaepernick appeared to react to JAY’s NFL deal by referencing comments Hov made about having “moved past kneeling.”

“My Brothers @e_reid35 @kstills @ithinkisee12 continue to fight for the people, even in the face of death threats,” Kap wrote. “They have never moved past the people and continue to put their beliefs into action. Stay strong Brothers!!!”

BREAKING: NYPD fires officer Daniel Pantaleo involved in Eric Garner’s 2014 death

The New York City police officer who used a chokehold on Eric Garner in a 2014 encounter that ended with Garner’s death has been fired, New York City Police Commissioner James O’Neill announced Monday.
Daniel Pantaleo, 34, was fired about two weeks after a police judge recommended that the officer be terminated over his use of the chokehold, a move that is prohibited under NYPD rules.

O’Neill announced in a media gathering at police headquarters Monday morning that Pantaleo “can no longer effectively serve as a New York City police officer.”
Garner, a 43-year-old black man, was approached by an officer who accused him of selling loose cigarettes outside of a Staten Island storefront. Garner pulled away from an initial attempt to arrest him, and Pantaleo then wrapped his arm around Garner’s neck from behind.
Pantaleo kept Garner in a chokehold after Garner fell to the ground; Garner’s last words were “I can’t breathe,” which later became a rallying cry for the Black Lives Matter civil rights movement.

#RIP: Former NFL & UT Football Star Cedric Benson Dies In Motorcyle Accident
In unfortunate news, former Packers & Bears running back Cedric Benson - who was a star football player at University of Texas and the #4 draft pick in 2005 - was killed in a motorcycle crash last night in Austin.

The 36-year-old avid biker was riding with a passenger around 10p when they crashed into a minivan.  Both Cedric and the unnamed passenger were killed. Cops have released the suspected cause of the crash, and revealed the passengers in the minivan were not hurt. According to TMZ:
Cops say the motorcycle slammed into a minivan. The people in the van were not injured and stayed on scene to work with investigators.
Cops say the minivan caught fire -- cops also say speed and poor visibility were factors in the crash. Cops also say the driver of the minivan will most likely not be charged with a crime.

CBS Austin also reports a motorcycle accident with two people dead. It describes the two victims as a “a man and a woman in their 30’s.”
Extremely sad news. Cedric also had a 5 year, $35M deal with the Bears while he won the NFC Championship with the team back in 2006.  Sports reporters say he struggled a bit in his career, though, before becoming a Bengal.  He leaves behind his mother, Jackqueline Benson, and a brother.

Jessica Lange “didn’t particularly like” American Horror Story: Coven
Although Fiona Goode is regarded as Jessica Lange’s most iconic American Horror Story character, spawning meme after meme for her legendary quotes, the actress says she “didn’t particularly like” Coven.
In an interview with Gold Derby, Jessica weighed in on the debate with her own ranking of the first four seasons of the show, placing Asylum first, Freakshow in second, Murder House in third and Coven last.

“It’s funny actually, I was stunned that year to get the Emmy for that part,” she admitted. “I mean, the part was very well written, but I didn’t particularly like the whole set up of the season and the story that we were telling.
“I don’t know. It was not my favourite. My very favourite just from my experience of doing it was Freak Show, although I think that Asylum was the better season. But I loved Freak Show. That’s exactly how I would rate them.”
Despite returning as her first American Horror Story character Constance Langdon in the most recent season, Apocalypse, Jessica admitted that she hasn’t seen it, so is unable to include it in her ranking.

Do you agree with her choices?

Adding: 'B***H wait out side #lecheminduroi #bransoncognac #TheKing'
Wendy can be seen in the grainy video wearing a New York Yankees hat over her blonde hair waiting outside of the party.

Williams captioned the shot: 'Nothing like Uncle @snoopdogg on your 19th birthday!!'

Eagle eyed social media users were quick to call Wendy out in the comments, howeverm, claiming that she snapped the shots with Snoop outside of the actual event - never making it into the party.
'She’s in the lobby waiting for the let out,' one user wrote.

Another added: 'When you cant get in but still get a pic with snoop pre party'  The pool party appeared to have been quite the ordeal.
Taking to social media once more, 50 seemed to be showing Wendy what she was missing by sharing videos from inside the insane bash.
Hundreds of party goers splashed around in and around the pool, tossing back cocktails and throwing dozens of beach balls
Wendy and 50 have gone at it for years, volleying barbed comments back and forth about the other.

Lets Ride Y’all! The ‘Soul Train’ Musical Bound For Broadway in 2021
Soul Train, the iconic music variety series created and hosted by Don Cornelius beginning in 1971 that showcased black musicians both established and up-and-coming, could make Broadway a stop on its long-running journey. A musical based on the show, with a creative team that includes three of the leading black women working in theater today, could arrive on Broadway in 2021.

Playwright Dominique Morisseau (Ain’t Too Proud), director Kamilah Forbes (Meet Vera Stark) and choreographer Camille A. Brown (Choir Boy, Once on This Island) will form the nucleus of the creative team, with The Roots’ Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson (The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon) as an executive producer. (See below for the complete production team.)

The musical will feature more than 20 hit songs from the era while telling the personal story of Cornelius as he creates the television series. The series became TV’s primary showcase for soul, rock, R&B and, later, hip-hop. Nearly as popular as the stage acts was the in-studio audience, who taught the nation the latest dances. Cornelius ended each episode with his catchphrase “love, peace and soul.”

“I cannot wait,” said Morisseau in a statement, “to partner with this legendary creative team of incredible women to celebrate the history and the unsung heroes of our nation’s longest running televised music and dance series.”
Morisseau called Cornelius’ Soul Train, which debuted in 1971, “our culture’s most influential and legend-making endeavors.”

“Having grown up on this series,” she said, “and being immersed in the culture around it, I never knew what it took to make it the iconic staple that it is. Through the socio-political challenges both internally and externally, Don Cornelius’ uncompromised vision, and the revolutionary dance culture that the show made visible to the mainstream, there are a million handprints on what we know as Soul Train.”
Also exec producing will be Tony Cornelius, son of Don Cornelius, who died in 2012. Said Cornelius, “With many years of experience working directly with my father, I’m forever grateful and deeply humbled by the impact Soul Train has had on the culture at large both here and abroad. For 37 years, and with purpose, through music, dance and style, Soul Train brought Love, Peace & Soul to a national audience.”
The 2021 target date would mark the 50th anniversary of the TV series’ debut, which Cornelius said honors his father’s “accomplishments, creative vision and legacy” and that “a Broadway musical only emphasizes the impact Soul Train has had on our American fabric.”

The full production team includes producer Matthew Weaver (Rock of Ages) and Jeffrey Tick (former owner of Broadway’s Helen Hayes Theater), along with general producing partner Richard Gay (5Pack Entertainment founder, and former EVP of Viacom’s Music Networks & BET Networks), all of whom announced the production today. Exec producing are Questlove, Cornelius, CSI creator Anthony E. Zuiker (making his Broadway debut) and Live Nation Urban president Shawn Gee. Devin Keudell is serving as Executive Producer, with Bespoke Theatricals as General Manager. Nick Stern from Media Weaver will serve as a co-producer.

In 2016, BET Networks acquired the Soul Train, and is the home of the annual Soul Train Awards. The BET drama series American Soul, based on the Soul Train story, has been picked up for Season 2 by the network.

Kanye’s Sunday Service Goes To a L.A. Church
Kanye West took his Sunday church service from a dessert to an actual church. He and his team pulled up at gospel singer Erica Campbell and her husband, Warryn Campbell’s church, California Worship Center Sunday.
This might only be the beginning for West. While he started doing the Sunday Services earlier this year, there are also reports he hopes to have his own church. An insider said,

“He is extremely passionate about his faith and wants to share it more regularly with people. He spends a lot of time studying and praying, and wants to share his journey.”

“Say what you want about Kanye, but he really does want to help people who need support. He understands brokenness and the need for healing, probably more than most people. He believes in the healing powers of music, but also believes that God can step in and heal people’s brokenness and their issues.”

They added, “He has talked about starting his own church, and what exactly that would be. It wouldn’t be the traditional, 3-hymns-and-a-sermon thing. Instead, it would be a way to point people to Jesus through the arts and through a community of people who lovea and care for each other. He also wants his kids to be raised in faith, and the best way for him to do that is to live out his faith. Kanye has always said that his vision has always been for people from different backgrounds — races, ethnicities, beliefs, politics — to come together to worship God and love other people.”
What do you think about Kanye taking his Sunday Service to an actual church?

Philadelphia DA speaks on charges in shooting of Philadelphia police officers
PHILADELPHIA-- Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner held a news conference Monday morning to discuss charges against the man accused of shooting six Philadelphia police officers as well as four additional people in relation to the incident.

Krasner began his address by saying he would be offering limited information, "much more limited than we had hoped to present today."
He said the investigation was so enormous and still ongoing, that he could not risk stepping on the activity of the Philadelphia Police Department in this case.
"This will take time," said Krasner. "It could take months to complete the investigation, but it will be done correctly."
The work at the scene continues for detectives collecting all of the necessary evidence, including dozens of bullet fragments.
"We are in the process of digging those out of cars and structures like houses and ceilings and walls," said Anthony Voci, Philadelphia Police Chief of Homicide. "That process is extremely, extremely time-consuming."

Voci said there is doorbell camera video from homes nearby the shootout as well as many other street cameras to log and mark as evidence.
"There's over 250 body-worn camera and the footage from those cameras have to be processed," he said.
Krasner said not to expect to hear many more details about the investigation as detectives continue to collect these items for evidence. He also reiterated the charges brought against Maurice Hill over the weekend.
Hill, 36, stands accused of shooting the six police officers during an hours long standoff in the Tioga-Nicetown section of the city last Wednesday.

Hill was arraigned Saturday. Authorities have said that the criminal background of suspect Maurice Hill should have prevented him from legally owning the firepower used during the standoff that lasted deep into the night.

Court documents indicate that Hill faces multiple counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault on a law enforcement officer, and reckless endangering. He was denied bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 5.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that at Saturday's video arraignment, Hill sat with arms crossed and head down, responding "I guess" when asked whether he understood the charges.
"I am not an immediate danger," he said after a prosecutor argued for denial of bail. A message was left with Hill's attorney seeking comment.
Hill had at least a semi-automatic rifle and a handgun when he opened fire Wednesday afternoon on officers serving a drug warrant, authorities said.

His record includes multiple arrests in Philadelphia and adjacent Delaware County between 2001 and 2012, according to online records.
Hill's criminal convictions include assault, perjury, fleeing and eluding, escape and weapons offenses.

He served two stints in state prisons - three, counting a return for a probation violation. He was sentenced to 55 months in federal prison term over a pair of convictions for being a felon in possession of firearms.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross has expressed amazement that the standoff ended with no one dead and no life-threatening injuries, despite the gunman firing over 100 rounds.
The six officers who were struck by gunfire were released after being treated at hospitals Wednesday night.

Krasner announced that four other men were charged with drug offenses in connection with the standoff; two were trapped in the house along with the gunman and two Philadelphia police officers, the Inquirer reported.
Hill's lawyer, Shaka Johnson, said Hill called him during the standoff asking for help surrendering. Johnson then called Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, and they patched in both Hill and the police commissioner, according to Krasner.
Hill told Johnson he wanted to make it out alive to see his newborn daughter and teenage son again.

Hill is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing September 5.
