ICON SHINE! Janet Jackson is now a Movie Producer!
R&B singer Janet Jackson is set to put on her executive producer hat for a new film with the working title Queenie. It tells the story of the 1920’s New York City mobster named Queenie. Born Stephanie St. Clair (1886–1969), Queenie (photo above) was a mob boss who ran numerous criminal enterprises in Harlem, NYC in the early part of the 20th century.
She even bumped heads with the then Italian mafia, and managed to stay entirely independent. In Bill Duke's gangland crime drama "Hoodlum" (1997) she was played by Cicely Tyson, as some of you might recall. The film will be set against the

She left the wrestling business altogether in 2011 after stops at New Japan Pro Wrestling and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling.
In between her wrestling career, Laurer started in six adult films and was featured on four seasons of “The Surreal Life,” “My Fair Brady” and “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” on VH1.
In February of 2015, Laurer disclosed she had reconciled with her mother and that her father had died in 2014.
#SADNESS: Former WWE
superstar Chyna dies at 45
Former WWE superstar Joanie Laurer,
also known as Chyna, has died at the age of 45, her manager said in a statement
on Twitter early Thursday.
The immediate cause of death was
unknown. Laurer’s manager told Pro Wrestling Sheet that she was found dead in
her Redondo Beach, Calif. home Wednesday and that she had been taking
medication for anxiety and sleep deprivation. It’s unclear if her medications
played a part in her death, but TMZ reported that authorities are investigating
her death as a possible overdose.
“She will live forever in the memories
of her millions of fans and all of us that loved her,” a statement read on her
Twitter account.
WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie
McMahon paid tribute in a Tweet calling Laurer's death "tragic news"
and describing Chyna as "truly a pioneer in our industry".Laurer, a native of Rochester, New York, was mostly known for performing under the name Chyna during her career with WWE (then known as WWF). She was also a renowned body builder and an adult film star.
In 1999, Laurer became the first woman
to participate in the WWF’s Royal Rumble event. Later that year she broke
another barrier by becoming the first woman to participate in the King of The
Ring tournament — which had mostly been dominated by male performers — and
shared a championship belt.
After issues with WWE, Laurer and the
company parted ways in 2001.She left the wrestling business altogether in 2011 after stops at New Japan Pro Wrestling and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling.
In between her wrestling career, Laurer started in six adult films and was featured on four seasons of “The Surreal Life,” “My Fair Brady” and “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” on VH1.
Ultimately, Laurer struggled with
substance abuse. Former boyfriend and wrestler Sean Waltman told the Calgary
Sun in 2005 that she was battling drug and alcohol-related issues as well as a
mental illness.
After a reported domestic abuse
incident involving Waltman in that same year, the New York Post reported that
she had stripped naked and jumped into a fish tank at a New York nightclub.
Later, during an appearance on the Howard Stern Show, she reportedly was
slurring her words and didn’t deny wanting to do cocaine if it was placed in
front of her.
Laurer appeared on “Celebrity Rehab
with Dr. Drew” in 2008, but claimed that she wasn’t an addict. She also said
she had a bad relationship with all of her family members, including her
siblings.
In 2008, Laurer was rushed to the
hospital after her birthday party because she was found passed out with cuts on
her arms. Two years later, she was hospitalized after overdosing on pain
medications. In February of 2015, Laurer disclosed she had reconciled with her mother and that her father had died in 2014.
#RHOA: Peter Thomas Opens His Second Club in Charlotte
The RHOA husband celebrated the grand opening of his new hot spot with Todd Tucker, Faith Evans, and more.
Peter Thomas is at it again. The Real Housewives of Atlanta husband celebrated the grand opening of his new Charlotte, North Carolina hot spot Club One on Thursday.
And Peter kicked off his new club in style. His fellow RHOA hubby Todd Tucker co-hosted the grand opening with Atlanta radio personality Big Tigger.
Faith Evans also came out to support Peter's newest venture.
We're certainly glad to see the finished product, especially since Peter has kept us in the loop about Club One's progress for the past few weeks on Instagram.
It looks like Peter is quickly taking over Charlotte nightlife. He previously opened Sports One Bar & Lounge in 2014, and it served as the venue for the after party of NeNe Leakes' comedy show earlier this week.
Fox Looks to Make Empire an Enduring Success, Not Just a Short-Term Hit!
There's a danger in shows burning too hot and fast
Empire might not be as white-hot as it was in Season 1, but the show remains one of TV's biggest hits, and its ratings among 18- to 49-year-olds are twice as high as any other current Fox series, except for The X-Files. However, the network has already ruled out Empire as the show that will follow the Super Bowl next February.
"We're trying to think about what's in the best interest of the show," said Dana Walden, co-chairman and co-CEO of Fox Television Group, at an Empire panel today during the 2016 NAB Show in Las Vegas. Because Empire takes a lengthy midseason hiatus, it would disrupt the flow to bring it back for a single episode, she explained.
But while Empire won't benefit from the Big Game's audience (Fox plans to announce its pick for that honor during next month's upfront), the network is working to sustain the show's success for several years to come.
"Empire is what we hold out to people [as] what the Fox brand stands for. When we premiered, people were wondering if you could have that kind of success on broadcast," said Walden. "If you give us that show, we'll make it an event for our audience."
Now Fox's challenge is to make sure the series doesn't burn too hot and fast, like its previous hit shows Glee and Ally McBeal. "It's really in the storytelling. The characters are rich. The world is rich," said Gary Newman, co-chairman and co-CEO of Fox Television Group. "We're not looking to have the greatest two-year run; we're looking to sustain."
But that doesn't mean producers are shy about killing off characters who have outlived their usefulness. "When they gotta go, they gotta go," said Walden.
Bryshere "Yazz" Gray, who plays Hakeem Lyon, hopes he escapes the Grim Reaper for several years. "It's one of the best jobs in the world! This is a dream come true," said Gray. "They found me out of nowhere. I was in Philadelphia performing in a basement studio."
The future of Empire
Walden joked about potential Empire knockoffs coming to Fox's schedule—"How about Gympire?"—but the network is considering another music-based pilot from Empire's co-creator Lee Daniels, called Star, about an all-female singing group from Atlanta. "Empire talks about people at the top of the business. Star is all about the journey of what you would sacrifice for fame," said Newman.
And while Star isn't an Empire spinoff, despite Daniels' involvement, the characters could still crossover. "It wouldn't be crazy to suggest that Yazz travels to Atlanta and meets the girls" from Star, said Walden.
Empire still has five episodes left in Season 2, but the writing staff is already looking ahead to next season; on May 2, it starts work on Season 3. "Eighteen episodes of Empire is like 22 episodes of any other show," said Ilene Chaiken, Empire's showrunner. "When you see our finale, you'll see a lot about how Season 3 is going to go."
Empire was co-created by Daniels and Danny Strong, but Chaiken handles showrunning duties. "I love the show more than life itself," said Chaiken, who is in touch with Daniels "constantly" to make sure the show stays true to his vision
#NEWMUSIC: Angie Stone ‘Think it Over’ (Listen)
Angie Stone first caught the music world’s attention as a member of Sequence, an all-female trio that recorded for Sylvia Robinson’s pioneering hip-hop label Sugar Hill.
The group made history with the now-classic “Funk You Up” (recently inspiration for Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk), “Funky Sound (Tear the Roof Off),” and “I Don’t Need Your Love.” Soon after, Stone began working with futuristic rap group Mantronix and Lenny Kravitz.
She was a part of Kravitz’s Let Love Rule Tour and appears on his album 5.
In the early 90’s, Stone was a member of the R&B trio Vertical Hold. She went on to co-write and co-produce D’Angelo’s critically lauded and Gold-selling debut, Brown Sugar in 1995, as well as 2000’s Voodoo. The two also have a son together.
“I’m a stone-cold survivor; I’m still standing. At the end of the day I am a real singer with real issues with a real God and keeping it real!” says Angie Stone.
Stone is one of those artists with a Midas touch. Her buttery smooth honey-toned pipes, undeniable gritty soulfulness and epic songwriting talents have been called upon by everyone from Mary J. Blige, Stevie Wonder, D’Angelo (she co-wrote and produced his groundbreaking albums Brown Sugar and Voodoo), Alicia Keys and Lenny Kravitz to name a few.
Stone’s Dream out now debuted at #3 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip Hop charts. It is released on Shanachie Entertainment in collaboration with Music Executive and Producer Walter Millsap III’s (whose credits include Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Alicia Keys) Conjunction Entertainment Inc. and TopNotch Music. Stone’s new single “Think It Over” is a follow up to the the album’s first single and Top 15 UAC hit “2 Bad Habits.”
1999 saw the release of Angie Stone’s Arista debut Black Diamond, which garnered two Grammy nods and two Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. The album featured the hit single “No More Rain (In This Cloud).”
The Gold selling Mahogany Soul followed in 2001 on the newly founded J Records and Stone Love followed in 2004.
The Art of Love & War followed next featuring the Grammy nominated single “Baby” with Betty Wright in 2007 and Stone’s album Unexpected was released in 2010.
Her album Rich Girl was issued on Saguaro Road via Time Life. The Renaissance woman appeared on three reality TV shows – VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club (2006), TV One’s R&B Divas (2013 and 2014), and ABC’s Celebrity Wife Swap (2014).
She’s appeared in such motion pictures as The Fighting Temptations, Pastor Brown and Ride Along as well as the Broadway production of Chicago.

#NEWHIPHOP: Jim Jones feat. A$AP Ferg – ‘Harlem’
Jim Jones is back in “Harlem.” Shortly after revealing his star-studded “Finesse” single, the Dipset spitter returns with a hometown anthem featuring fellow Harlem rhymer, A$AP Ferg.
The track takes a page out Future’s book with Jones saying he “fucked your bitch in some Jordan flip-flops.” Ferg continues the chorus’ theme, saying he did the same in adidas flip-flops. Through their verses, Jimmy brags about his old drug dealing days while the Trap Lord name-checks other Harlem rappers, including Cam’ron and Ma$e.

“Harlem” is the second back-to-back Ferg/Jones collaboration following last week’s “Finesse.” That joint also featured Desiigner and Rich Homie Quan. Both tracks could very well end up being on Jimmy’s next project, The Kitchen.
Musiq Soulchild talks ‘Life On Earth’ at The Experience
Musiq Soulchild was in Chicago recently for Dedry Jones’ event, The Experience, to promote his most recent release Life On Earth at The DuSable Museum of African American History on the South Side of Chicago. Cars were lined up for blocks signaling an event where every single seat in the house was sold. It has been a while since Musiq has released anything under his well-known moniker. This night proved to be eye-opening and extremely informative.
The earlier part of the discussion focused on Musiq’s introduction to the industry. The first song he ever released was placed on the soundtrack of Nutty Professor II: The Klumps and was later released as his lead single from Ijuswannasing. Musiq spoke candidly about his introduction to the industry and how hip-hop has such a strong influence on what he does. He mentioned that his goal was to create “mainstream hip-hop soul music.” Musiq is quite proficient when it comes to writing about love. He had this to say about his song “Love,” “If [it] came to you and sat in your kitchen and you are like, “Hey Love, what’s up?” It’s actually a conversation with love.”
As much as Musiq sings about love, he does not want to be pigeonholed as being a singer who tackles only one subject matter. His stint as The Hustle was an example that he wants to be viewed as an artist with many layers. His most recent project, Life on Earth is a project that moves closer to what Musiq wants to convey, and that is a pure artist. He performed his lead single “I Do” to the packed house and they loved it. One of Musiq’s fans, Erica Williams, said: “After this experience I have a whole new love for Musiq.”
Musiq stayed afterward to greet his fans. It was an enlightening event.
Nicki Minaj’s Brother Indicted For RAPE!
Nicki Minaj’s family was hit with some devastating news in January when it was revealed that the rap star’s older brother, Jelani Maraj, had been arrested and charged with raping a young girl. Since then, Minaj’s family has chosen to remain silent on the matter, but now they’re back in the news as headlines have revealed that Maraj has now been indicted in the case.
As previously reported, Maraj was arrested on a first-degree rape charge for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl. Very little info was given about the alleged crime, except that child was someone that Maraj allegedly had access to.
Maraj showed up to his first day in a Nassau County courthouse in Mineola, New York, with his mother, Carol Maraj, and his lawyer, Andrea Zellan, by his side and reports claimed that Carol was the one who posted the $100K bail to get Maraj released.
Although the family hoped that the charges would be dropped against Maraj, new reports have revealed that a grand jury deliberated on the case for a month and decided on April 4 to indict Maraj on multiple charges of sexual misconduct.
The full list of charges includes felony predatory sexual assault against a child, along with felony sexual conduct against a child under age 13, sexual conduct against a child and endangering the welfare of a child.
The reports claim that Maraj is facing 15 years behind bars for the first charge alone and if he’s convicted of all four charges, he could spend the next few decades of his life in a prison facility.
Like before, few details have been revealed about the case and since the Maraj family is keeping quiet and the case involves a young minor, we doubt that the Internet will be flooded with details about the case.
But considering how highly Minaj has spoken of her brother, it’s safe to assume that she’s devastated by the news of his indictment.

#BRAVE: Tracy Morgan Cancels Mississippi Show in Protest of Anti-LGBT Law!
Tracy Morgan joins the list of artists and entertainers protesting Mississippi’s “religious freedom” bill by canceling his upcoming appearance at the Horseshoe Casino in Tunica.
He was originally supposed to stop for his Picking Up the Pieces stand-up tour, but tells WLOX he won’t be appearing as a result of the bill.
Tracy did not make this decision lightly. He very much looks forward to rescheduling his tour dates in the area after the ‘Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act’ is either repealed or heavily amended.
If you’re unfamiliar, Gov. Phil Bryant signed the bill giving businesses the ability to use their personal religious beliefs as an excuse for refusing to offer services to potential customers. Let’s hope this bill gets repealed.
Why Was Kelly Ripa a No-Show at ABC’s ‘Live’ This Morning?
The morning after Michael Strahan’s big announcement of his move to GMA his said-to-be-furious co-host was nowhere to be seen.
Just call her Kelly Ripshit.
The morning after being blindsided by her longtime co-host Michael Strahan on the hit syndicated ABC morning show, Live! with Kelly and Michael, Kelly Ripa was a no-show on Wednesday’s episode.
Her unexplained absence, on a day when Strahan delivered to the studio and viewing audience a surprisingly detached commentary on his plans to leave the show for the network’s uneasy lead-in Good Morning America, gave credence to reports that Ripa is angry that Strahan kept her in the dark about his intentions to abandon the wildly successful Live franchise.
The Daily Mail reported that ABC sources had indicated that Ripa was “refusing to turn up to work,” and would not be return to her hosting duties until Strahan left for Good Morning America.
A network source, while not addressing whether Ripa will return for Thursday’s show, told The Daily Beast that she will be off on Friday when Live! is dark, and was previously scheduled to be off next Monday. Late Wednesday, CNN reported that Ripa would not be present for Thursday's show.
“Kelly’s off today,” Strahan announced flatly on Wednesday after shimmying onto the stage with former Saturday Night Live performer Ana Gasteyer, Ripa’s substitute host.
“I’ve been in the news lately,” the gap-toothed former football star added. “I am leaving this show.” As the studio audience groaned, he murmured, “I know.”
The 44-year-old Strahan—who joined Live four years ago after Regis Philbin announced his retirement, also without warning Ripa—continued: “I’m going to go over to GMA fulltime, which is going to happen in September. It is the same channel.”
Concerning the headlines after ABC announced the shakeup, Strahan noted: “I was reading some stuff sounding like I died…”
Later in the program, in a segment in which Gasteyer and Strahan subjected themselves to an acupuncture treatment, the departing co-host sat on the set with two red pins sticking out of the right side of his neck—conjuring an image, at least in some minds, of what Ripa might be doing with a Michael Strahan doll. Then, right at the end of the show—and who knows if prompted to by bosses—Strahan finally mentioned Ripa by name.
“I really want to thank of course Kelly Ripa because Kelly welcomed me here and I’ve learned so much from her,” he said. “She’s been an amazing influence on me and it has truly changed my life to be here with her. I know that the show will continue to be strong and great because of Kelly and Michael Gelman and the staff here. Everybody is so talented and this show has not been around for over 30 years by mistake… Kelly, I thank you and I love you and everyone else here at Live.”
According to a source familiar with Tuesday’s intrigue, Gasteyer was recruited late Tuesday night, at the last minute, after Ripa informed executive producer Michael Gelman that she had no intention of reporting for work today.
Gelman—usually sighted off-camera, parrying with the co-hosts—was present for Wednesday’s program. But there were no cutaways to him, as might be expected, during Strahan’s announcement.
Several television industry observers, meanwhile, expressed surprise that Strahan would agree to leave his comfortably booming berth on Live! for the relative uncertainty of GMA.
“I don’t understand Strahan’s side of it,” a former ABC executive told The Daily Beast. “It doesn’t really work to make this change. What if the ratings on GMA don’t improve? He gets one good paycheck but why do you walk away from a really successful morning talk show?”
This network veteran added that the ABC-owned stations and affiliates are unlikely to be happy with the switch, at least initially.
“For the stations, it’s taking a risk with a great talent on a show, and potentially damaging something that makes the stations money,” said the former ABC exec. “They had a guaranteed hit on their hands that go for another 10 years.”
.
The counter argument—provided by several ABC sources—it that Ripa “is the heart and soul of the show,” and can be reasonably expected to thrive with a new co-host. Ripa has carried Live! since she replaced Kathie Gifford in 2001, and maintained its leading position after Philbin’s departure, and when Strahan arrived in September 2012.
The ABC stations have no cause for worry, these network sources claimed.
Meanwhile, one highly-placed network source said, “Nobody can force Michael Strahan to do something he doesn’t want to do…He doesn’t have to get up at 4 in the morning unless he wants to.”
Strahan’s publicist declined to comment, and representatives of Live and Ripa didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment from The Daily Beast.(“Kelly had the day off,” a spokesperson for the show later emailed, accentuating the obvious.)
According to published reports, Strahan had been in secret talks with ABC management for several weeks about the notion of appearing daily on GMA, where he already is part of the mix two days a week, in an effort to shore up that program’s declining numbers against NBC’s Today show in the all-important advertising demographic of viewers aged 25-54.
An ABC News veteran, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the 12 percent fall-off at GMA—which has been dominant until relatively recently—could mean the loss of tens of millions of dollars in ad revenue to the network. GMA, which has remained No. 1 in total viewers, has lost more than 20 percent in the demo over the past two years, while Today’s numbers have also declined, although by substantially less, and the NBC show has beat its rival for more than 30 straight weeks in the ad-friendly demo.
Countering observations that this move is essentially a “Hail Mary” play by ABC President Ben Sherwood in a desperate attempt to fix a nagging and costly problem—the sagging ad revenue at GMA—a current ABC source said that GMA’s producers have long made it clear to Strahan that they want more of him on the air; on the days when he does appear on GMA, he must leave by 8 a.m. in order to prepared for Live!
While Strahan is said to be very well liked by the GMA staff and talent—and co-hosts Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos, and news reader Amy Robach posted tweets warmly welcoming him as a fulltime colleague after Tuesday’s announcement—they are reportedly chafing at the notion that Strahan is being publicly positioned as GMA’s savior.
Meanwhile, a Strahan associate, who spoke on condition of not being named, pointed out that he met with Ripa and Gelman privately ahead of the formal announcement but was not obligated to inform them personally of his plans, which is the role of his bosses, Disney Co. Chairman and CEO Bob Iger and Sherwood, who reportedly engineered the transition.

Transgender Woman Islan Nettles Murderer sentenced to ONLY 12 YEARS!!
The distraught mother of a transgender woman who was beaten to death by a young thug told her daughter's killer 'I hope you die' as he was jailed for 12 years.
James Dixon, 25, was sentenced on Tuesday for killing Islan Nettles, 21, in August 2013.
In a written statement to police, he allegedly admitted descending into a 'blind fury' when he realised the woman he had been chatting to on Eighth Avenue in Harlem, New York, had been born a man.
'I hope you die, I hope you rot because you took away something that you should have no right to take away from anybody,' cried Delores Nettles at Manhattan Supreme Court.
'How can you sleep at night, how can you rest?' she asked Dixon, who refused to make eye contact with her, reports the New York Post.
She told the thug that he would be able to see his mother every day and hear the words 'I love you' while she could only see her child on a 'mantle jar.'
The 12-year sentence was a deal offered by Justice Daniel Conviser after Dixon pleaded guilty to first
Prosecutors, who wanted to see Dixon behind bars for at least 17 years, resisted the deal and Nettles' father, Anthony Mundon, slammed it as too lenient, describing his daughter as an 'outgoing, free-spirited' aspiring fashion designer.
Dixon's lawyer Norman Williams declined to comment. Nettles died of blunt impact injuries to the head according to ABC7. After the beating, Nettles was on life support in Harlem Hospital for five days before she died.
Harriet Tubman will appear On $20 Bill!
Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew announced on Wednesday that the countenance of abolitionist leader Harriet Tubman will grace a new $20 bill.
The decision caps a public campaign asking for a woman to be placed on American paper currency and months of deliberation by the Treasury to either replace Alexander Hamilton on the $10 bill or Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.
"With this decision, our currency will now tell more of our story and reflect the contributions of women as well as men to our great democracy," Lew said in a letter to the American people.
In a statement, the Treasury also announced that the new $20 note will keep an image of Jackson, who was a slaveholder, on the back. The new $10 bill will keep Hamilton on the front but in the back feature "an image of the historic march for suffrage that ended on the steps of the Treasury Department." Leaders of that movement—Lucretia Mott, Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Alice Paul — will be honored in the image.
As we've reported, last year, an unofficial contest by the activist group Women on 20s gave the nod to Tubman to take Jackson's place on the $20 bill. The campaign then sent a petition to President Obama.
As reported:
"We'll note that Tubman's appearance on the $20 bill would have a special historical resonance: That's the same amount she eventually received from the U.S. government as her monthly pension for her service as a nurse, scout, cook and spy during the Civil War, as well as for her status as the widow of a veteran."
The Treasury had previously said a new $10 bill would feature a woman. But the popularity of the Broadway show Hamilton might well have put a stop to that plan.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of Hamilton, personally lobbied Lew and after a meeting last month, he tweeted that the Treasury secretary had told him "you're going to be very happy."
In an interview with Charlie Rose in March, Lew also previewed his decision saying, "Alexander Hamilton is one of my heroes. He's not leaving our money."
Hamilton was the country's first secretary of the Treasury.
The Treasury also said that a new $5 bill will honor two important American events that happened at the Lincoln Memorial: Marian Anderson's 1939 performance on the steps and Martin Luther King's 1963 "I have a dream" speech.
The Treasury did not say when the new bills would enter into circulation, but said the final concept designs of the new $20, $10 and $5 notes will be unveiled in 2020.
