#MAGFAB: Da’Vine Joy Randolph for W Magazine - Best Performances Issue 2024
W MAGAZINE’s first issue of 2024, Volume 1, Best Performances hits stands February 13, 2024. The highly anticipated Best Performances portfolio is an annual feature curated by W’s editor-at-large Lynn Hirschberg and highlights stars at the forefront of cinema, from industry legends and icons to those whose phenomenal talent is ushering in a new wave of stardom.
Paying tribute to the actors and stories that left us in awe over the past year, this year’s Best Performance issue features Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and styled by W Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, Sara Moonves.
On how she started her career as a singer: “I’m a classically trained opera singer. I thought that was my journey. I’m telling you a secret: I may be able to bridge art forms together. I would love to portray the opera singer Leontyne Price in a film. She’s in her 90s, and we’re trying to reach out to tell her story.”
Explaining what she calls the “Brad Pitt effect”: “…there’s something I call the “Brad Pitt effect.” I did a film called The Lost City, and he was staying in the villa next to mine. That was intense: just him being him. Once I saw him in person, I got it. It’s not just that he’s sexy; the ‘Brad Pitt effect’ is like an aura.”
Nice. It’s on newsstands now.
#RHOA: Shereé Whitfield Smolders in Cutout Birthday Dress
Shereé Whitfield’s 2024 birthday bash delivered everything you’d expect: good company, lots of dancing, and terrific fashion moments.
The Real Housewives of Atlanta mom celebrated her special day on January 4 at Katch Kitchen & Cocktails, an upscale lounge and restaurant located in Tucker, Georgia. Shereé kicked off the night by sharing a close-up shot of her beautiful glam by Alexys Pelissier, her chunky gold drop earrings, and her high ponytail with long loose waves. However, that was just a little taste of her gorgeous birthday look. Several minutes later, the Ohio native posted a handful of Instagram Stories that showed off her sleek party dress.
The garment was the La Robe Maille Noeud Dress by the French fashion label Jacquemus. Presented in the copper colorway, the knitted piece featured a one-shoulder strap with a metal buckle adjustment, an asymmetrical hem with a leg slit, and a knotted cutout detail near the hip. Shereé finished the look with gold bracelets and a pair of open-toed heels with gold-toned chain straps around the vamp and the ankle.
The mother of three enjoyed her big night surrounded by friends, family, and a handful of Bravolebrities. Attendees included RHOA's Marlo Hampton, RHOA alum Lisa Wu, as well as Married to Medicine’s Toya Bush-Harris and Phaedra Parks.
Marlo stepped out in a Jean Paul Gaultier trompe l'oeli crop top and a pair of wide-leg jeans, while Phaedra donned a semi-sheer black bodysuit with pointed boots and a gold belt.
Shereé celebrated her actual birthday, which fell on Tuesday (January 2), with an intimate friends-and-family dinner. That same day, the mother of three posted a jaw-dropping fit pic in which she repped She by Shereé, the iconic fashion line she launched more than 15 years ago. The photo showed the Atlanta 'Wife posing in a pair of blue graffiti leggings and a matching sports bra, along with a denim jacket and a pair of white heels.
“Of course SHE’s going to ‘FTCU’ (F*ck up the club) bc it’s [Shereé Day],” she captioned the Instagram. “So blessed & grateful to see another year! Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes, love and gifts!”
#MusicNews: Ariana Grande's New Music Is Officially Coming
Ariana Grande has been hard at work bringing Galinda/ Glinda the Good Witch to the big screen in the film adaptation of Wicked. But while she might have been focused on singing songs from the famed Broadway musical, she still managed to find time to record music of her own.
On Sunday, the Grammy-award-winning musician announced that a new single is coming. Grande posted a blurry close-up shot of her face, with bold red lipstick on Instagram to announce her single, “yes, and?” coming January 12.
The artist's official sweetener Instagram page — which was the title of her fourth studio album released in 2018 — also saw changes to its profile photo along with nine image posts that piece together the blurry close-up. The new profile pic shows Grande's tattooed hand, but blurry. Is that this album's theme? Blur?
Grande also shared a pre-save link for the new single.
Over the last several weeks, Ariana Grande has been teasing on social media that she's in the studio, working hard on her music. At the beginning of December, Grande shared a carousel of photos and videos of her sitting at a computer in the studio, wearing her long blonde ponytail, piecing her music together. She kept the videos muted, of course.
Multiple celebrities and fans wrote in the comments how excited they were for her new era of music. SZA wrote, “Oh this bout to eat.” Billie Eilish wrote, “UN MUTE PLS.” While Selena Gomez commented, “FINALLY.”
Before announcing the title of her forthcoming single, Grande was photographed walking around New York City wearing an oversized black crewneck with the single's title, “yes, and?” Celebrity photographer Miles Diggs, AKA Diggzy, posted the pics to Instagram with the caption “With your chest” and #ag7, and fans immediately put their detective hats on wondering if “yes, and?” is the title of a song or the album itself. It's not the first time Grande has worn her merch to signal a new album coming; the artist wore sweetener-theme clothes ahead of that album.
The last album Grande released was Positions in October 2020. Shortly after its release, Grande landed the role of Glinda/ Galinda in the highly-anticipated film Wicked. The screen adaptation will be released in two parts: the first in 2024 and the second in 2025.
#HipHopNews: Lil Nas X Sends Social Media Into A Frenzy After Sharing "J Christ" Cover Art
Lil Nas X is poised to release his new track, “J Christ,” on Friday (Jan. 12). Potentially from his upcoming sophomore album, the recently announced cover art depicted the rapper as Jesus Christ on the cross.
The artist captioned the accompanying Instagram post, “My new single is dedicated to the man who had the greatest comeback of all time.”
In the comment section, one fan wrote, “I swear his marketing strategy is just to make everyone hate him once a year. Someone protect this man from the avalanche this is about to kick off.” Another added, “This is going to piss off a lot of people.”
However, not all reactions were positive. Underneath The Neighborhood Talk’s reshare, one user lambasted Nas X for mocking Christianity: “The way y’all play with God is insane.” Elsewhere, someone said, “I understand art. I truly do, but I’ll never understand playing with someone’s religion.”
Previously, Nas X had hinted at a new “Christian era” in his music. A November 2023 teaser on Twitter showed him dancing in the street, wearing a shirt with a religious message and singing about calling on angels and facing pain. The new direction followed a controversial period highlighted by the artist’s Satan Shoes and “MONTERO (Call Me By My Name)” video.
“Y’all see everything I do as a gimmick. When in reality, I’m just an artist expressing myself in different ways,” he said in response to last year’s backlash. “Whether I’m a cowboy, gay, satanic or now Christian, y’all find a problem! Y’all don’t police nobody else’s art like mine. Y’all hate me because I’m fun, cute and petite.”
Vivica A. Fox Under Fire For Saying She Can't Relate To Taraji P. Henson's Career Struggles
Vivica A. Fox had a shocking response to Taraji P. Henson's recent comments about pay disparity in Hollywood and it has started a new online debate. The "Independence Day" star has faced backlash after saying that she can't relate to her former "Empire" co-star's career struggles.
In a video published by TMZ on Monday, January 8, Fox was signing autographs for fans when she was asked about the discussion of equal pay that was initiated by Henson. "You know, darling, to each his own. I'm very happy, very blessed," she responded with a shrug.
Insisting that she didn't have the same same experience as Henson, the 59-year-old added, "To each his own. I didn't have that experience, you know?" She went on noting, "But to, uh, get your peace out is important. I totally understand that. And I love my girls for looking our for each other. But, I'm good!"
After the video circulated online, social media users quickly weighed in on Fox's apparent indifference to the issue. "She didn't have that experience because she has not acted on the level Taraji has. She has not reached the levels Taraji has reached," one person shaded her.
Another similarly said of the "Kill Bill" actress' career, "her Career don't even compare." A third critic said, "I mean Vivica can't relate because she only did like 1 or 2 big motion pictures," while a fourth dissed her, "Mean girl energy Iont [sic] like that s**t."
Some others, however, claimed that Fox wasn't wrong as she was just saying from her point of view. "Vivica is in 5 lifetime movies a yr with a executive producer title. She most likely is good," one supporter argued. Another claimed, "Vivica may have had better management who worked her deals better. I ain't mad at her."
Hitting back at the critics, one other penned, "Are ya'll crazy?? She's probably STILL collecting checks from Independence Day! She's speaking from HER point of view.. she's been working more than 30yrs. Old money .. how yall gone judge how she ANSWERED the question in VIVICA's way.. I see no problem here."
Prince's 'Purple Rain' Movie To Be Adapted Into Stage Musical
A stage version of "Purple Rain" is being developed. The 1984 drama film features late pop legend Prince - who died in 2016 at the age of 57 - as a musician known as The Kid on the rise with his band and now the Academy Award-winning film is being adapted for the stage.
"We can't think of a more fitting tribute than to honor Prince and the 'Purple Rain' legacy with this stage adaptation of the beloved story to honor Prince and the 'Purple Rain' legacy with this stage adaptation of the beloved story," Londell McMillan, chairman of The NorthStar Group, and Larry Mestel, founder and CEO of Primary Wave Music, told Variety.
The "Raspberry Beret" singer is seen in the film as a young man trying to escape the clutches of his abusive father by pursuing a music career. The show will be based on the original screenplay by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn and will feature a book by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, and will be directed by Lileana Blain-Cruz.
Larry Mestel, founder and CEO of Primary Wave Music added, "We are thrilled with our Broadway partners and creative team, who are bringing a theatricality to the film's original fictional story. We can't wait for a new generation to discover 'Purple Rain' and for lovers of the original film and album to experience its power once again, this time live."
Further details of the production will be announced at a later date.
The film - which won an Oscar for Best Original Song Score - is tied into Prince's multi-million-selling album of the same name and as well as the title track features hits such as "Let's Go Crazy", "Jungle Love", and "Baby I'm a Star".

College Football Playoff: No. 1 Michigan beats No. 2 Washington 34-13 for first national title in 26 years!
Michigan dominates Washington to win CFP titleScroll back up to restore default view.
Michigan is the best team in the country. The No. 1 Wolverines jumped out to an early lead and put No. 2 Washington away late to win Monday’s national championship game 34-13 and finish the 2023 season as the only undefeated team in college football.
The win is Michigan’s first national title since the Wolverines claimed a share of the national championship in 1997. It also caps an incredibly tumultuous year that saw head coach Jim Harbaugh suspended twice for six of Michigan’s 15 games.
“It’s just such a glorious feeling. I really don’t have any more words than that," Harbaugh said after the game.
Much like he did in the Rose Bowl, running back Blake Corum salted the game away for the Wolverines on Monday night. His 12-yard TD run with 7:09 to go gave Michigan a two-touchdown lead and essentially ended any hope of a Washington comeback.
Michigan (15-0) looked like it was going to run away with the game in the first quarter. Literally. The Wolverines rushed for an astonishing 174 yards in the first quarter and averaged over 19 yards a carry as Donovan Edwards broke out with two long touchdown runs.
Edwards rushed for a 41-yard TD on Michigan’s first drive of the game and then topped it less than eight minutes later with a 46-yard TD run. They were unexpected big plays from a running back who struggled throughout the 2023 season after a superb finish to 2022.
The junior took over as Michigan’s No. 1 back after Corum suffered a knee injury late in the season a year ago and was incredibly explosive. But he averaged less than four yards a carry entering Monday night’s title game and had just 393 yards entering the title game.
Edwards’ TD runs helped give Michigan a 17-3 lead before halftime, but Washington got a crucial TD before the break. The Huskies went for it on fourth down with less than a minute left as Michael Penix Jr. found Jalen McMillan for a TD to cut the Wolverines’ lead to seven at halftime.
Washington (14-1) got the ball to start the second half and was positioned to potentially tie the game despite getting overwhelmed by Michigan for much of the first half. But Penix was intercepted by Will Johnson on the first play of the second half on a pass that was tipped as his right ankle got twisted awkwardly when he threw the ball.
From there, the game was fairly ugly until Corum’s TD. The teams managed just two field goals on eight possessions before Corum’s TD.
Michigan finished the game with 38 carries for 303 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Both Corum and Edwards scored twice. QB J.J. McCarthy threw just 18 passes and completed only 10 of them for 140 yards.
Lisa Bonet Files for Divorce From Jason Momoa Two Years After Announcing Breakup!
While the pair announced their split in January 2022, Bonet's filing says they've been separated since Oct. 2020.
It's officially over for Lisa Bonet and Jason Momoa. On Monday, the 56-year-old actress filed for divorce from her 44-year-old husband, two year after they announced their breakup, court docs obtained by ET show.
Bonet and Momoa were first linked in 2005, though they didn't tie the knot until 2017. While the pair announced their split in January 2022, in Bonet's filing she lists their date of separation as Oct. 7, 2020, which was her and Momoa's three-year wedding anniversary.
Bonet, who cites irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split, asks that neither she nor her ex receive spousal support, and that their separate property assets and debt go to their respective parties, according to the docs.
She also requests joint legal and physical custody of their kids, Lola Iolani, 16, and Nakoa-Wolf, 15, per the docs. TMZ was first to report news of Bonet's divorce filing.
In their January 2022 joint statement, Bonet and Momoa wrote, in part, "The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. We free each other to be who we are learning to become. Our devotion unwavering to this sacred life & our children."
Since then, the pair has appeared to remain amicable. In March 2022, Momoa told ET that he and Bonet were "still family," and then, nine months later, he delivered a Christmas tree to her home.
Tiger Woods and Nike are Ending their 27 year relationship!
Tiger Woods has broken up with Nike after a protracted 27-year collaboration with the world’s largest sportwear company, the golf legend announced on Monday.
“Over 27 years ago, I was fortunate to start a partnership with one of the most iconic brands in the world,” Woods wrote on X.
Woods went on to write that “there will certainly be another chapter.”
Nike bid adieu to Woods on Instagram, saying “it was a hell of a round, Tiger.”
“Tiger, you challenged your competition, stereotypes, conventions, the old school way of thinking. You challenged the entire institution of golf. You challenged us. And most of all, yourself. And for that challenge we’re grateful,” the company added.
Popular Swiss sneaker brand ON Running’s CEO Marc Maurer, addressing speculation following Woods departure at Nike, told an audience at the ICR retailing Conference on Monday that Woods was not signing with the brand.
“We hope he finds a great new partner. It’s not going to be us,” Maurer told the gathering.
Nike has almost been synonymous with Woods, from when he first went pro in 1996 to his Masters win in 2019, his first major tournament win in 11 years. Even though a sex scandal drove sponsors such as Gatorade, AT&T and Accenture away from Woods – losing him an estimated $20 million – his relationship with Nike stayed intact.
In 1996, Nike launched the iconic “Hello World” commercial, based on Woods’ professional debut at the Greater Milwaukee Open, where he began the press conference with, “I guess, hello world, huh?”
Woods signed a five-year endorsement contract with Nike in 2000. It was worth an estimated $85 million, making it the richest endorsement contract in sports history at the time.
At one point, Woods’ Nike deal was reported to be worth as much as $20 million a year, CNN previously reported. Woods signed multiple deals with the company over a span of nearly three decades, including a 10-year deal signed in 2013 that’s worth about $200 million. But in 2019, his deal was worth about half of that amount annually, Bob Dorfman, an endorsement expert and executive creative director at Baker Street Advertising, said at the time.
Woods is still one of the best known athletes in the country, three times better known by the general public than the average athlete, according to surveys by Q Score.
And while positive opinions of him are down from his heyday among the general public, sports fans still have a more positive view of him than the average athlete, according to the Q Score surveys.
“Why is Nike separating from Woods who has been a long-time brand ambassador for the brand? It could be that Nike is looking to get out of the golf business,” said Eric Smallwood, president of Apex Marketing Group, a sports and entertainment firm that evaluates sponsorships and advertising campaigns.
“Nike used to sell golf balls and clubs with its logo and that ended. It still sells golf clothing and footwear,” he said.
Smallwood said he would be surprised if the breakup was due to any concern that Woods was nearing the end of his career.
“Woods is synonymous with golf. Nike has stuck with him through his life trials and his comebacks,” he said. “Woods can play as long as he wants to in the PGA and then the Senior PGA. Look how long Nike has held on to Michael Jordan. He hasn’t played in over 20 years.”
In August, Woods was named the sixth player director on the powerful PGA Tour policy board, giving players a one seat advantage on the board after the controversial merger between the PGA Tour and Saudi-backed LIV golf. Woods had reportedly turned down nearly $1 billion to play in LIV golf.
Joshua Butler, founder of online golf clothing brand J. Butler Golf, called Woods a savvy business person “who understands that the landscape of golf is changing.”
“Nike has been pulling away from golf products. Tiger has vast opportunity to land somewhere else,” said Butler. “Golf clothing companies are coming into the market with other options, better options and varied price points.”
“It’s not that Nike has done anything wrong, it’s not that Tiger Woods may not necessarily be happy with his relationship with Nike for the last 27 years, but this is a golden opportunity to go after a younger crowd, to go after individuals who aren’t rich that want to play the game,” he said. “Tiger understands that, the importance of what he’s meant to the golf industry as well as to people of color. That’s why I think this is such as monumental shift right now.”
Cedric The Entertainer speaks on Katt Williams during recent Golden Globes appearance
On Sunday (Jan. 7), Cedric The Entertainer made an appearance at his first-ever Golden Globes. While on the red carpet, the legendary comedian spoke to “Entertainment Tonight” reporter Nischelle Turner about his recent conflict with Katt Williams.
“It’s an interesting time now,” he said to the outlet. “People get on these blogs and they just start spewing off stuff that’s not even factual. I let the fodder just go out there until I’m ready to respond to it. I am who I am. I stand on that for sure.”
As previously reported, Williams accused Cedric of stealing one of his jokes — among other insults — during a sit-down on Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast.
“He thought that I was just a no-name comedian and that he could take this joke and nobody would know. The issue was that I had already done this particular joke on BET’s ‘ComicView’ twice,” Williams claimed. “Cedric comes to The Comedy Store, he watches me in the audience, he comes backstage, he tells me what a great job I did and how much he loves the joke. Two years later, he’s doing that as his last joke on The [Original] Kings Of Comedy, and he’s doing it verbatim. He just changed my car into a spaceship.”
Shortly after that interview went live, Cedric took to social media to respond to the diss. “Revisionist history. Regardless of whatever Katt’s opinion [is], my career can’t be reduced to one joke Katt Williams claims as his,” the Barbershop star wrote on Instagram. “[I’ve] been [in] over 40 movies [and] my specials and brand speaks volumes for [who] I am. The people I have put on [includes] ‘Katt in the Hat’ at the Gibson Amphitheater.”
Cedric added, “And all that tough talk is corny [as f**k]! I’m [a] grown a** man, and none of that s**t [is] gonna go like you think. You do you, and I got this over here.”
Jonathan Majors Compares Girlfriend Meagan Good To Coretta Scott King
According to Majors, he’s come close in current girlfriend Meagan Good, comparing her to Scott King during part two of the sit-down.
“Everything has kinda gone away. And it’s just me now, you know, and my lovely, you know, partner, Meagan [Good], and my dogs. She’s an angel. She’s held me down like a Coretta” Major, 34, said with a smile. “I’m so blessed to have her. The relationship is still fresh, but I think I’ve found her.”
Fans Offer Gypsy Rose Blanchard Smart Advice for Her Own Safety After 'Harry Potter' Broadway Date
Fans have some smart advice for Gypsy Rose Blanchard after she shared details about her date night on social media.
The 32-year-old, who was just released from prison, attended a performance of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway on Saturday night (January 6) in New York City.
Gypsy took her first-ever trip to New York this week to promote her Lifetime docu-series and she got to see her first Broadway show on the trip.
In a video posted to her Instagram account before the show started, Gypsy and her husband Ryan Scott Anderson showed off the view from their seats and told fans they’d share thoughts on the play after the performance ended.
Well, some fans were concerned by the post, for a good reason.
“Don’t post your location until after you’ve left it, Gypsy. Just as extra precaution for yourself, lots of crazies out there!” one fan commented. The comment is the top comment on the post with more than 21,000 likes.
Someone else responded to the comment, “this was such a nice way to word it compared to some of these comments!”
Another person said, “Please be careful posting where you are. You have a large following now and there are so many sick people out there. So many crazies. Please be safe ❤️”
Hopefully Gypsy will take this advice to heart!
Jo Koy Reacts to Criticism of His Golden Globes 2024 Hosting Performance
Jo Koy‘s hosting gig at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards didn’t go as he had hoped.Sunday night’s (January 7) ceremony was the 52-year-old comedian’s first time hosting a major awards show. Reviews of Jo‘s performance were not kind, as many of his jokes failed to elicit laughs from the audience.
During an appearance on “GMA3L What You Need to Know” on Monday (January 8), Jo reflected on his experience at the Golden Globes and revealed what he took away from the night.
“I had fun. You know, it was a moment that I’ll always remember,” he said. “It’s a tough room. It was a hard job, I’m not going to lie… I’d be lying if [I said] it doesn’t hurt. I hit a moment there where I was like, ‘Ah.’ Hosting is just a tough gig. Yes, I’m a stand-up comic but that hosting position it’s a different style. I kind of went in and did the writer’s thing. We had 10 days to write this monologue. It was a crash course. I feel bad, but I got to still say I loved what I did.”
Jo also commented on the joke he made about how the Golden Globes would feature fewer shots of Taylor Swift compared to NFL games, which she has frequented in recent months due to her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce.
He identified the quip as a moment he felt bad about.
“I think it was when the Taylor [Swift] one was just a little flat…It was a weird joke, I guess,” he said. “But it was more on the NFL…I was trying to make fun of the NFL using cutaways and how the Globes didn’t have to do that. So it was more of a jab toward the NFL. But it just didn’t come out that way.”
On whether he plans on hosting another awards show in the future, Jo was not optimistic about the possibility.
“That’s a tough gig, I’m not going to lie,” he admitted. “I love the art of standup. It was cool the opportunity came to me, but hosting is just a beast. That’s about it.”

Jonathan Majors recently sat down with ABC News for his first interview following being found guilty of harassing and assaulting ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari.
In part one of the Q&A, the actor discussed his “shock” at being found guilty and explained voicemails where he lectured Jabbari to be more like Coretta Scott King and Michelle Obama.According to Majors, he’s come close in current girlfriend Meagan Good, comparing her to Scott King during part two of the sit-down.
