Viola Davis is on the latest Cover of W Magazine’s Directors Issue Directed Regina King!
In one of three covers for W Magazine Volume 2 The Directors Issue, on stands April 6th, Academy Award winning actor and first time director, Regina King directs Oscar-, Emmy-, and Golden Globe–winning actress Viola Davis in Black Americana: A Photo Essay on Love and Pain. Shot in the West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles, the portraits are a classical portrait of Black American life. Davis is joined by her husband, Julius Tennon, an actor and a producer, and their 10-year-old daughter, Genesis the story’s narrative depicts a family enjoying a Saturday afternoon at home, after which, Mom and Dad go out on the town that night, the following morning they all head to church, and once they’re back home, the Mom receives a horrible phone call.
It’s a seriously impactful look at what King terms Black Americana. Elaborating Regina King says, “I don’t think any of us are particularly happy with the state of America, but we still embrace the fact that we are Black Americans, even with all of the things that have happened in history.”
Regina King recalls the music of legendary Nina Simone and the feelings it evokes: “It’s sad, but we still have this thing about us as Black people that, while we have the burden, we believe in giving it to God, and that our spirits are or will eventually be freed. You feel the weight of the world, but you’re hearing Nina’s voice and what she’s saying, and somehow you believe it’s going to be okay.”
Regina King on how she felt like she prepared for becoming a director throughout her entire life: “As an actor, I was paying attention and not really knowing why I was paying attention—why I would stay behind, why I would be on set when it wasn’t even my scene. I didn’t really know why then, but I know now.”
Regina King on the importance of collaboration: ““I’m not really interested in being a part of something if it doesn’t feel collaborative, whether it is as a director, an actor, or a producer. By not wanting to include other people’s ideas, you could end up with something really unimaginative.”
Viola Davis explains that King’s insistence on capturing Black life in its totality was what drew her to participate in this project: “There’s a life beyond the tragedy, there’s life even within the tragedy, and there was a life before the tragedy,” she said. “That you can be experiencing moments of joy when tragedy comes in and invades your life, and then it melts into something else—we understand that about life in general, but not always with Black folks in it. This is the first time I’ve ever done a photo shoot like this.”
Viola Davis laments on the continued racial stereotypes at play in Hollywood despite all the progress that’s been made: “It becomes about reinterpreting who we are to either look better than what we are, more noble, more aesthetically beautiful in a sort of assimilationist realm, or it’s another version of Blackness that is downtrodden.”
Viola Davis recalls studio executives scoffing at the idea that she could be considered sexy enough to have an attractive husband on How to Get Away With Murder: “I feel like there is still a filter that we have to go through, and by the time you see us on-screen, we’ve become almost a Mr. Potato Head of who we actually are,” she continued. “You’ve got to snip out this part for white people because it’ll become an indictment. And then what’s left is a huge lie. An apologetic lie.”
#RHOA: SHOTS FIRED! Kenya Moore says ‘RHOA’ co-star Drew Sidora ‘needs’ a tummy tuck!
Kenya Moore caused a social media stir Sunday by saying that her “RHOA” co-star Drew Sidora “needs” a tummy tuck — after Sidora dissed Moore’s body on the show.
“She needs to pay for a tummy tuck,” Moore, 50, tweeted alongside a photo of Sidora in a peach-hued metallic dress, the same frock Sidora recently wore on her own Instagram.
Angry comments flooded in following Moore’s social media snipe.
“Let’s hope no one body shames your daughter the way you do other women,” one fan wrote.
Another said, “Wow. Way to physically body shame another woman / mother. Good lead example to set on your platform.”
Other “RHOA” fans, however, came to Moore’s defense, pointing out that the reality star’s remark was a response to Sidora’s own comment about Moore’s body on “Real Housewives of Atlanta.”
On Sunday night’s episode, when Moore refused to participate in a “booty bounce” contest, Sidora said in her confessional interview, “What’s the problem? Girl, you paid for that booty, bounce it.”
Moore has previously denied getting work done on her behind.
“Body shaming black women’s butt who are already made to feel bad about the shape of our hips and butts is equally gross,” one fan wrote on social media. “You can [sic] chose what part of the body is worse to body shame.”
Another added, “Kenya is not perfect but one thing I’ve noticed from the second she became a housewife is that EVERYONE NOTICES HER REACTION but pretends to be blind for the REASON she’s reacting…”

Nike sues company that made 'Satan Shoes' with Lil Nas X!
Athletic shoe maker Nike Inc on Monday sued a New York-based company that produced “Satan Shoes” purported to contain a drop of human blood as part of a collaboration with “Old Town Road” rapper Lil Nas X.
Nike said in the lawsuit that the company, MSCHF Product Studio Inc, infringed on and diluted its trademark with the black-and-red, devil-themed shoes, which went on sale online on Monday. Lil Nas X is not named as a defendant in the suit.
The shoes are customized Nike Air Max 97 sneakers that contain red ink and "one drop of human blood" in the sole, according to a website describing the 666 pairs of limited edition shoes. The back of one shoe says "MSCHF" and the other says "Lil Nas X." here
Several media outlets reported that the shoes sold out in less than one minute at a cost of $1,018 per pair. Lil Nas X said on Twitter he would choose the recipient of the 666th pair from social media users who circulated one of his tweets.
Nike, in its lawsuit filed in federal court in New York, said the shoes were produced “without Nike’s approval and authorization,” and the company was “in no way connected with this project.”
“There is already evidence of significant confusion and dilution occurring in the marketplace, including calls to boycott Nike in response to the launch of MSCHF’s Satan Shoes based on the mistaken belief that Nike has authorized or approved this product,” the lawsuit said.
Nike asked the court to immediately stop MSCHF from fulfilling orders for the shoes and requested a jury trial to seek damages.
Representatives for Lil Nas X and MSCHF did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The Grammy-winning rapper, 21, on Friday released a video for new song “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” in which he dances with a character wearing devil horns.
How Much Money Sharon Osbourne Was Paid To Leave The Talk!
After an intense on-air segment among The Talk co-hosts, along with days of rumors, Sharon Osbourne has officially parted ways with the daytime talk show after more than a decade. Reports signal that there were days of negotiations held in order to make this happen, and it seems that Osbourne walked away with a hefty payday.
On March 10, 2021, Osbourne defended Piers Morgan over his controversial comments directed toward Meghan Markle. Fellow The Talk co-host Sheryl Underwood challenged Osbourne on some of what she had said, and things quickly became quite uncomfortable. Osbourne demanded that Underwood should not cry as the discussion ensued, insisting that she should be the only person crying. The backlash against what Osbourne said was intense and the show immediately went on hiatus for a number of days.
According to ET Online, a meeting that included The Talk show hosts was held after that tense on-air segment. It was a "closed-door" meeting with the goal to discuss what had just happened, and hopefully, smooth things over. However, a source told the outlet that nothing was resolved during that meeting. Osbourne took to social media to apologize, but it wasn't enough.
On March 26, CBS announced that Osbourne's behavior during that earlier episode was considered problematic. Per The Hollywood Reporter, they set up workshops and cultural awareness trainings and it was determined that Osbourne would leave the show. Everyone following The Talk saga is curious to know how much Osbourne received in connection with her departure.
Sharon Osbourne reportedly quickly connected with a legal team with plans to sue the head honchos over the exit, according to The Daily Mail. Everybody will have to wait and see whether a legal fight happens, but according to Page Six, Osbourne negotiated a multi-million dollar exit package before the departure announcement was made.
According to one source for the outlet, Osbourne was given the opportunity to "spin" her departure from The Talk as her own decision. In addition, she was reportedly paid a minimum of $5-$10 million in exchange for leaving The Talk. Not only that, but she supposedly retains the ability to speak out about it all when she decides she is ready.
Ahead of the official announcement regarding her departure, Osbourne was reportedly telling those close to her that she would demand a significant payout, according to The Sun.
"She has a contract and they will have to pay her off if they want her to leave and that will cost them tens of millions. If bosses expect her to go quietly, they have another thing coming," a source told the outlet.
Was the exit payment of up to $10 million enough to have Osbourne depart The Talk quietly, or will she still pursue further legal action? It certainly sounds likely that she'll be speaking out about it all at some point in the future and as her fans know, she's not one to hold back.\
Niecy Nash Tells Jada Pinkett Smith She'd 'Never Been with a Woman Before' Meeting Wife Jessica Betts!
Niecy Nash is setting the record straight about about her past relationships.
In an exclusive clip from Wednesday's premiere episode of Facebook Watch's Red Table Talk, Nash discusses her recent marriage to wife Jessica Betts and how she fell in love with a woman after two marriages to men.
In the sneak peek, Nash, 51, tells Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith and Adrienne Banfield-Norris that she'd "never been with a woman before" Betts, who also appears on the episode.
The comedian says her three children — Dia, 21, Donielle, 25, and son Dominic, 28 — who she shares with her first husband Pastor Don Nas, had hilarious reactions after hearing about Betts.
"My daughters were like, 'Wait what?' " Nash recalls. "My youngest daughter, she reminded me, she was like, 'Wait a minute mom, are you the same mom that was like girl, I'm strictly dickly?' And I was like, 'Wah, wah. Like yeah, but no.'
"And my son was like, 'Wooow,' " the actress adds, as the rest of the group breaks out in laugher.
Earlier this month, Nash appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where she spoke openly about her relationship with her wife, who she told host DeGeneres she calls her "hersband."
Nash joked she "broke the internet" when her marriage to a woman was revealed, with the Claws star detailing that she doesn't look at the revelation as a coming out.
"A lot of people say that, like, 'Oh, you came out!' and I say, 'Well, from out of where?' You know what I mean?" Nash said of her sexuality. "I wasn't anywhere to come out of. I wasn't living a sexually repressed life when I was married to men, I just loved them when I loved them. And now I love her."
Back in September, Nash opened up about her nuptials and her love story with Betts.
"[My marriage] has absolutely nothing to do with gender and it has everything to do with her soul," Nash, who divorced her second husband Jay Tucker last March, said of Betts. "She is the most beautiful soul I have ever met in my life."
"I was not suppressing my sexuality my whole life," she added of her decision to marry Betts. "I love who I love. At one point in my life, I married twice and I love those people. And today I love this person. I've done everything I wanted to do on my own terms and my own way. So my choice now in a partner has nothing to do with who I've always been. It's a matter of who I am in this moment."
Red Table Talk premieres Wednesday, March 31 at 12 p.m. E.T/9 am P.T. with new episodes streaming weekly.

"You keep everything simple @vanhunt ✨#valentinesdayweekend," Berry wrote alongside the flirty footage on Instagram. "Music by the one & only Van Hunt @meundies."

Lady Gaga's Dog Walker Celebrates Leaving Hospital With Emotional Post!
About a month ago, Lady Gaga’s dog walker, Ryan Fischer, was shot in the middle of walking the singer/actor’s three French Bulldogs. Two of the dogs were stolen, but eventually found their way back home, leaving Fischer in the hospital to recover from his injuries. Which leads us to today, as Fischer is officially leaving the hospital, and he shared an emotional post, and a bit of a dance, to celebrate.
In a massive update from Ryan Fischer’s personal Instagram, he recalled his entire journey of recovery with great detail and candor. While not easy, Fischer’s path has led him to a moment that most people would take for granted, as you’ll see in the video from his message. Getting dressed, by putting on his skinny jeans and a shirt, you can see Ryan’s gratitude even before he busts into a light dance of thanks:
While released once from the hospital after the shooting, complications eventually arose that sent Ryan Fischer back into the hospital. As his lung had collapsed continually throughout his hospital stay, it was eventually decided that pieces would have to be removed for it to truly heal. Combined with nerve damage that affected the right side of his body, Fischer took to heart a message that one of the Clinical Partners gave him during this traumatic time: “Recovery isn’t a straight line.”
The shooting of Ryan Fischer, as well as the temporary abduction of Lady Gaga’s dogs Gustave and Koji, led to shockwaves in the Hollywood dog walking business. More defensive measures, training and even schedule limitations imposed on dog walkers were all part of what followed in the reaction to this horrible moment. Thankfully, Fischer has reached the point where he can head home and continue to heal in more familiar surroundings.
It’s an update that must please Lady Gaga herself, as she’s recently been filming Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci with Adam Driver. As production on the star-studded movie has been based in Rome as of late, it’s the last place a dog owner and a friend would want to be under such circumstances. So the news that Ryan Fischer is on his way home should definitely warm her heart, especially since it happens to have broken the day after her birthday.
The full story surrounding Gustave and Koji’s disappearance, as well as Ryan Fischer’s shooting, is still being investigated, as of this writing. While his recovery zigged and zagged into various scenarios, Fischer held strong and accepted that he would get better through time and perseverance. It only makes his video, and his offering of a dance to the world, all the sweeter. We here at CinemaBlend would like to wish Ryan Fischer a continued and speedy recovery from the traumatic events he has lived through.
‘American Gods’ Canceled At Starz; No Season 4!
The TV gods have turned their favor away from American Gods, at least for now. The series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel starring Ricky Whittle and Ian McShane will not return for a fourth season on Starz, the network confirmed Monday.
The news of the premature end to the often-troubled series is not altogether unexpected, and follows the Season 3 finale on March 21. That season-ender saw Whittle’s Shadow Moon seemingly killed after a vigil at the mythical Tree of Life for his seemingly deceased and estranged father, Mr. Wednesday/Odin, played by McShane. A pivotal point in Gaiman’s book, the incident set up American Gods‘ fourth season with Wednesday taking advantage of Shadow Moon’s sacrifice for Wednesday’s own resurgence in the battle against the New Gods.
“Everyone at Starz is grateful to the dedicated cast and crew, and our partners at Fremantle who brought author and executive producer Neil Gaiman’s ever-relevant story to life that speaks to the cultural climate of our country,” a network spokesperson said.
In typical small-screen fashion, where nobody ever says never anymore, we hear there are discussions about wrapping up the Toronto-themed series to align with Gaiman’s 2001 novel as either an event series or a TV movie. However, based on the fact American Gods has seen double-digit ratings declines from season to season, any hopes of a continuation might be more smoke than fire from the premium cabler.
Developed for TV by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, American Gods has seen almost as much drama behind the camera as in front of it since its April 2017 premiere with the original cast that included Whittle, McShane, Orlando Jones, Emily Browning, Yetide Badaki, Bruce Langley, Crispin Glover, Kahyun Kim, Omid Abtahi, Mousa Kraish and Pablo Schreiber.
Fuller and Green exited the series during pre-production on Season 2, replaced by Jesse Alexander, and, to a lesser extent, Gaiman, in what became a problematic year as behind-the-scenes sharp elbows and long delays pushed its return to March 2019. Schreiber, Kraish and most publicly, Jones did not return for Season 3, which debuted January 10.
Gaiman is currently ramping up work on Netflix’s fantasy adaptation of his comic book series The Sandman, with casting earlier this year setting Tom Sturridge, Gwendoline Christie, Vivienne Acheampong, Boyd Holbrook, Charles Dance, Asim Chaudhry and Sanjeev Bhaskar among others. The prolific author already has Good Omens at Amazon.
Produced by Fremantle, American Gods is executive produced by current showrunner Charles Eglee, Gaiman, Anne Kenney, Damian Kindler, David Paul Francis, Mark Tinker, McShane, Craig Cegielski and Stefanie Berk.
Starz’s upcoming slate includes Run the World; Blindspotting; Power Book III: Raising Kanan and Power Book IV: Force; Black Mafia Family; the second seasons of Hightown, Power Book II: Ghost and P-Valley; and Season 3 of Step Up among others. Earlier this month it renewed Outlander for a seventh season.
Upon hearing the news, Shadow Moon himself responded to the cancellation. Whittle remembered his time on the Starz series, thanking all who were involved in the process – from the cast and crew to Neil Gaiman.
“This has been an amazing journey thus far and I am so grateful to my fellow cast and crew who have worked so hard on this award winning show. We have the best fans around the world and thank each of you for your passion and support, so know that Neil Gaiman, Fremantle myself and the cast are still committed to completing Neil Gaiman’s critically acclaimed story,” he wrote.
See Whittle’s post below.

Ariana Grande joins ‘The Voice’ as a coach, replacing Nick Jonas!
Ariana Grande is joining hit show “The Voice,” replacing Nick Jonas as a coach.
The pop superstar, 27, will join the next season of the NBC show, Season 21, alongside regular coaches Blake Shelton, John Legend and Kelly Clarkson.
A source said she is a huge fan of The Voice and her management team has been negotiating to get her on the show for a while.
“She is replacing Nick Jonas, who is a [coach] on the current season, but he isn’t leaving for good. Nick will remain on rotation with other stars that have appeared on the show. The chances are he will be back soon.”
Multi Grammy-winning Grande has appeared on “The Voice” in the past, performing her hit “Into You” on the finale in 2016, but did not take part as a coach.
Her most recent album, “Positions,” broke the record for most songs to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and cementing her as Spotify’s most-streamed female artist of the past decade.
Grande said, “I’m so honored and excited to join ‘The Voice’ family! I have been a huge fan of the show for such a long time.
“I can’t wait to go head-to-head with the incredible coaches, get to know these new artists and help to take their craft to the next level.”

The DOJ is reportedly investigating whether Rep. Matt Gaetz had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old and violated sex trafficking laws!
The Justice Department is investigating whether Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl and violated federal laws against sex trafficking in the process, The New York Times reported Tuesday.
Gaetz confirmed the existence of the investigation to Axios, adding, "The allegations against me are as searing as they are false. I believe that there are people at the Department of Justice who are trying to criminalize my sexual conduct, you know, when I was a single guy."
The inquiry is part of a larger probe into Joel Greenberg, a tax collector in Florida associated with Gaetz who was charged last year with 14 felony counts related to allegations that he stalked a political opponent, used a state database to create fake IDs, and sex trafficked a minor between the ages of 14 and 17.
According to The Times, the department launched its investigation into Gaetz near the end of President Donald Trump's term, when Bill Barr was still attorney general. Senior Justice Department officials, including some Trump appointees, were briefed on the investigation given its high profile nature, the report said.
Gaetz's encounters with the 17-year-old girl reportedly took place in 2019, and investigators are said to be zeroing in on whether he paid for her to travel with him across state lines, which would breach federal sex trafficking laws.
The Florida congressman told Axios and The Times that his lawyers were informed that he was the subject, not the target, of "an investigation regarding sexual conduct with women." A subject is someone whose conduct falls within the scope of an investigation, and a target is someone who investigators may believe they have enough evidence against to charge with a crime.
"I only know that it has to do with women," Gaetz told The Times. "I have a suspicion that someone is trying to recategorize my generosity to ex-girlfriends as something more untoward."
He told Axios: "I have definitely, in my single days, provided for women I've dated. You know, I've paid for flights, for hotel rooms. I've been, you know, generous as a partner. I think someone is trying to make that look criminal when it is not."
Asked whether any of the women he interacted with were minors, Gaetz said he was "absolutely" sure none of them were.
News of the criminal probe into Gaetz came hours after Axios reported earlier Tuesday that the Florida congressman was considering not seeking re-election in favor of a job at the far-right media network Newsmax.
Gaetz has been one of the most vocal Republicans on Capitol Hill since he was elected to represent Florida's 1st Congressional District in 2016.
Among other things, he's made headlines for going to bat for Trump in congressional oversight hearings; living with a 19-year-old Cuban immigrant named Nestor whom he calls his son and whose sister he dated; shelling out tens of thousands in taxpayer dollars to entities linked to political allies and friends; and crusading against "cancel culture" and big tech.
In December 2017, Gaetz was also the only House lawmaker to vote against a bill that allotted more money to the federal government to fight human trafficking.
"Unless there is an overwhelming, compelling reason that our existing agencies in the federal government can't handle that problem, I vote no because voters in Northwest Florida did not send me to Washington to go and create more federal government," he said at the time.
Gaetz tweeted about the DOJ's investigation into his actions on Tuesday, after The Times and Axios published their stories.
‘Space Jam 2’ Character Posters Preview the All-New Tune Squad Line-Up!
Space Jam: A New Legacy has just released a batch of character posters featuring the Tune Squad, and they are looking like some fierce competition. The hotly-anticipated follow-up to 1996’s Space Jam stars LeBron James alongside the Looney Tunes, who have to band together on the court to defeat a new big bad so that James can save the day — and his son.
The posters emphasize James’ size above all else, hilariously cropping out most of his face just to edge the top of Bugs Bunny’s head into the frame. The rest play it a little straighter, giving us a closer look at some of the key Tune Squad players, including Lola Bunny, Tweety Bird and Daffy Duck. We’ve gotten glimpses of some of these new elements before, including the new Tune Squad jerseys, as well as Lola Bunny’s reworked design.
The biggest surprise might be precisely who is featured — or who isn’t. James, Bugs, Lola, and Daffy Duck are certainly expected featured players. The inclusion of Road Runner, Speedy and Taz seems to emphasize the importance of speed and physical prowess on the team. Perhaps cartoon basketball has gotten a lot more competitive in the 25 years since Michael Jordan played?
Directed by Malcolm D. Lee (The Best Man Holiday), Space Jam 2: A New Legacy also features Cedric Joe as James’ son and Don Cheadle as the rogue A.I. who imprisons them in a virtual world. Several NBA and WNBA players will also appear in the Space Jam sequel, including Chris Paul, Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson and Diana Taurasi, along with many other Looney Tunes favorites.
Space Jam: A New Legacy premieres in theaters and on HBO Max on July 16. Check out the official character posters below.
Lola Bunny sports her new Tune Squad team jersey and teases her basketball skills by balancing a basketball on her fingertip with ease. Meanwhile, Roadrunner looks absolutely thrilled to be playing with the rest of the Tune Squad and practically flying off of his poster as he runs to make a shot.
The rest of the Tune Squad are in some very active poses on their respective posters. While Bugs looks calm, cool, and collected on his poster, teammates Daffy, Taz, Speedy and Tweety all look like they're willing to go into overtime to score the points they need to win their big game.
Cardi B Announces Forthcoming Hair Care Line To Drop This Year!
Cardi B announced in a recent social media post that she is releasing a hair care line this year, with the hopes of educating people on Hispanic and Latino hair. The Grammy winner posted the news after a series of tweets that discussed the different features of Hispanic and Latino people.
“This year, I will be coming out with a hairline that I been working on at home for my hair and my daughters,” Cardi captioned her post. “however, I think it is time for people to educate themselves on nationality, race, and ethnicity. Being Hispanic/Latina don’t make your hair long, don’t make your skin light, or don’t make your face features slim, specially Latin countries from the Caribbean islands.”
Although Cardi attributes the mask to her hair growth, she also notes that DNA plays a part in the makeup of a person’s hair.
“DNA have something to do with your hair, not your nationality but guess what you can always maintain your hair,” she added.
Last summer, Cardi shared the DIY hair masks she uses on herself and her 2-year-old daughter, Kulture. The recipe included avocado, argan oil, mayonnaise, castor oil, olive oil, eggs, honey, and banana.
She later shared a slimmed-down version of the mask with natural ingredients. The updated recipe included only avocado, egg, a spoonful of honey, castor oil, and a big scoop of coconut oil.
Cardi didn’t announce what products will be included in her forthcoming line, just that they will be out sometime this year.
Pharrell Williams Mourns Death of Cousin, Who Was Killed by Police in Virgina Beach Shootings!
Pharrell Williams is mourning the death of his cousin Donovon Lynch after he was tragically killed by police during the shootings in Virginia Beach.
The 25-year-old was shot by a police officer in the third of three shootings that occurred last Friday night in the Virginia Beach Resort Area.
The Virginia Beach police claim that Lynch was “brandishing a handgun at the time of the shooting,” though it’s not clear on what led to the shooting. Bad Girls Club cast member Deshayla E. Harris was shot and killed during the second shooting of the night and it’s believed she was an innocent bystander.
Pharrell took to his Instagram account on Monday (March 29) to pay tribute to his late cousin.
“The loss of these lives is a tragedy beyond measure. My cousin Donovon was killed during the shootings. He was a bright light and someone who always showed up for others. It is critical my family and the other victims’ families get the transparency, honesty and justice they deserve. Virginia Beach is the epitome of hope and tenacity and, as a community, we will get through this and come out even stronger,” he wrote in the post.
We’re sending our thoughts and condolences to Pharrell and his family during this difficult time.
Lizzo Accused Of Sampling Church Elder’s Funeral Performance In 2016’s ‘Coconut Oil’, Sued For $750K!
Lizzo is facing another copyright allegation. After winning a case against her concerning her 2017 hit Truth Hurts, the Grammy-winning songstress is now being sued for $750,000 with claims that she sampled a funeral performance for her 2016 song Coconut Oil.
Orlandus Dunning of Detroit, who is an elder in the Church of God In Christ, filed the lawsuit in Wayne Circuit Court in December 2020, claiming he “suffered anguish, embarrassment and outrage” after Atlantic Records released the song. His lawsuit was moved to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan Friday (March 26th).
Dunning is suing Lizzo, Atlantic Records, Nice Life Recording Co. (a subsidiary of Atlantic), and Atlantic’s parent company Warner Music Group Corp. He says that the beginning and end of the song were recordings of a hymn he sang for a mutual family member’s funeral.
The lawsuit says,
“When Plaintiff sang the devotional, it was at a private funeral and done for the specific purpose of uplifting his family and friends during their time of bereavement. (Dunning) had a reasonable expectation of privacy and that his voice would not be heard publicly, as the funeral where he sang was held privately and open only to family and close friends.”
It alleges Lizzo “recorded this audio without either (Dunning’s) knowledge or consent,” adding Dunning,
“did not and would not have consented to the use of his voice this way because the message in the song is contradictory to his own brand and beliefs as an ordained elder in the Church of God In Christ … organization.”
He said Lizzo, “knew or should have known that portraying (Dunning) in such a light would cause him distress based on his position as an Elder in the church.”
Lizzo has not publicly responded to the lawsuit.
