Christina Applegate for Backstage Magazine - for Rollacoaster - Fall/Winter 2020!
Christina Applegate knows all the nonsensical rama-lama-lama “Grease” lyrics of “We Go Together” by heart—thanks to a particularly traumatizing audition for “Grease 2” when she was a child actor. “My mom was an actress, and she worked on this with me to the point where we never worked on my auditions together again because it caused such insane problems,” Applegate now remembers with a laugh. Thankfully, the lifelong screen actor has found her footing and then some, scoring an Emmy win and four more nominations for her varied television roles (most recently Netflix’s tragicomedy “Dead to Me”) and proving herself as adept at drama as comedy in the latter half of her career. Here, the actor answers our Backstage 5 questionnaire with some revealing responses, some cringey—but all with an unapologetic directness. “Don’t be so fucking sensitive,” she quips.
Do you have an audition horror story you could share with us?
Yes! When I was a little kid, I auditioned for “Grease 2,” and I had to go in and sing a song. My mom was an actress, and she worked on this with me to the point where we never worked on my auditions together again because it caused such insane problems. Such turmoil—don’t work on your auditions with your parent, it’s the worst. But I sang, “We go together like rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong,” and I went there, and, you know, it’s a hard song! Like, “shoo-bop sha wadda wadda.” You know, there’s no lyrics, it’s just a bunch of words! And I remember being in there, and my mom was like, “When they get to the ‘wah-wah’ part, be Helen Keller and go, ‘Wa wa wa wa wa,’ [as if to reenact “The Miracle Worker,”] I swear to God. I froze up and started crying and ran out of there. Needless to say, I did not get that job. I had a full-on panic attack when I was 10 years old because I couldn’t remember what I was supposed to do with her bizarre choreography.
How did you first get your SAG-AFTRA card?
OK, here’s the thing: I don’t know. It was 1975. My mom doesn’t remember, I obviously don’t remember I was born in 1971, so no one really knows. But I have it, and it says I’m a member since 1975.
“I always say the secret to my longevity: mediocre success. The day you make $20 million for a movie, you’re done.”
I know “Sweet Charity” in 2005 marked your Broadway debut, but was Equity also early in your career?
Equity came with “Sweet Charity” because I had only done some local theater here in Los Angeles with my mom when I was a little kid, and then I did something else when I was little bit older, but nothing substantial and nothing significant. So, I did get my Equity card when I did “Sweet Charity,” and now I’m not longer in Equity because it’s been a long time.
Is it something you hope you go back to?
My body can’t do that, that eight-shows-a-week thing; 2005 was hard enough doing it with a broken foot. I remember how I felt at the end of that year and they wanted me to extend, and literally every part of me was bandaged. Underneath my costume, there were just bandages all over the place, and I remember going, like, “I gotta go home. I can’t do this anymore.” It’s just too hard. Those people are crazy!
Well you crossed it off the bucket list, at least.
I did. And it was the one musical since I was a little girl that I’d wanted to do. I grew up going to musicals. I had family in New Jersey, so my mom would take me to New York City every year, and I saw everything. I saw Patti LuPone in “Evita,” I saw the original cast of “A Chorus Line,” I saw the original cast of “The Wiz,” I saw the original cast of “Dreamgirls.” I saw everything original in the ’70s and early ’80s. It was a dream. And being a Fosse freak, like, “Sweet Charity,” watching that movie “All That Jazz”? I wanna show it to my kid, but it’s so [rated] R. When I was a kid, like, my mom didn’t care. I got to see “All That Jazz” when I was 7 or 8 years old, and I was blown away. I saw “Cabaret” when I was a little kid. So to be able to go and play Charity Hope Valentine at the time was really a dream come true.
What is one screen performance that every actor should see and why?
I would say “Sophie’s Choice,” because the performances are some of the best work from all of them. Meryl [Streep], obviously, but Kevin Kline, [Peter] MacNicol—there are moments in that that are just so incredible. And the iconic “choice” scene is one of the greatest pieces of performance that I’ve ever seen in my life. The silent scream that she has to do, I’m going to throw up just thinking about it.
What is the wildest thing you’ve done for a role?
I don’t know, weird stuff. I think [of] stuff like sitting in gross mud and putting it all over your face for “Vacation”—moments like that, I don’t like the way that feels. That felt real gross. I guess that’s not really “wild,” but I don’t want to spend my day doing that at all!
It’s all for the sake of the performance, right?
The performance of the art that is “Vacation”—which, actually, I think is one of the funniest movies I’ve ever been in. I have to say, I don’t think I’ve laughed harder at anything that I’ve been in than that movie.

One of Hollywood’s Last Golden Age Stars Lady Olivia de Havilland, Is Dead at 104!
A Hollywood legend has passed. Olivia de Havilland, best known for her roles in Gone With the Wind and The Adventures of Robin Hood, has passed away at age 104. De Havilland was one of the last living stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age, rising to stardom in the first decades of the 20th century.
De Havilland’s publicist, Lisa Goldberg announced on Sunday the late actress died peacefully and of natural causes in her home in Paris (via The Hollywood Reporter). De Havilland had been living in Paris for the last 60 years, making it her home as her career slowed down. The Gone With the Wind star had recently celebrated her 104th birthday on July 1. Her public appearances were fewer and further between in recent years, with one her last outings occurring in February 2011 at the Cesar Awards in France.
Although de Havilland’s first onscreen role was in 1935’s Alibi Ike, with notable appearances opposite Errol Flynn in Robin Hood and Captain Blood. However, her big breakout role came at the end of the ’30s in Gone With the Wind as Scarlett O’Hara’s (Vivien Leigh) cousin Melanie. From there, de Havilland graced the screen with lead roles in My Cousin Rachel, Dark Mirror, and Lady in a Cage. De Havilland is also a two-time Oscar-winner for her performances in 1947’s To Each His Own and 1950’s The Heiress. De Havilland’s last roles happened more than 30 years ago, with the star taking on smaller roles like the 1988 TV movie The Woman He Loved and the 1986 mini-series Anastasia: The Mystery of Anna. In addition to her onscreen appearances, de Havilland may best be remembered for some high points — the infamous De Havilland Decision, which put an end to restrictive studio contracts, and becoming the first female president of a Cannes Film Festival jury — as well as some not-so-high points, like her highly-publicized feud with younger sister Joan Fontaine.
With an onscreen career spanning more than 50 years, 60 credits, and numerous honors to her name, it’s fair to say de Havilland’s impact on Hollywood will be remembered as important and powerful.
#RHOA: NeNe Leakes’ Says Her Return To ‘RHOA’ Is Still Up-In-The-Air!
NeNe Leakes’ role on the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” appears to be up-in-the-air.
Rumors are swirling that the Bravo vet was fired from the show, but an insider told us conversations “are still ongoing.”
Meanwhile, entertainment blog Love B. Scott reported that Leakes will not return for Season 13, and that execs want the show to “trend younger.” An insider confirmed to Page Six that actress Drew Sidora, 35, and influencer LaToya Ali, 33, are expected to join the cast.
Leakes, on the other hand, has been hinting that there’s trouble in paradise with cryptic social media posts. On Friday, she tweeted: “Have you ever worked with a sociopath who used you for their personal gain to achieve what they want for themselves.”
Earlier, Leakes alluded to being in a similar situation as pal Tamar Braxton, who we reported sent letters to her reality bosses at WeTV, alleging they made her suicidal.
“I have dealt with so much lately… If I told you the way I was being treated, in a certain way, you would not probably believe it. Same thing with Tamar,” she wrote. “But sometimes, when you’re in certain situations, you just don’t have the choice.”
She said she’ll address her return “soon.” Reps for Bravo and Leakes did not comment.

#HipHopNews: DJ Khaled Reveals Collaboration With Megan Thee Stallion!
Fresh off his Drake collaborations, DJ Khaled has another one on the way with Megan Thee Stallion.
During an interview with Beats 1 on Apple Music, the We the Best mogul shared more details about his highly-anticipated 12th studio album Khaled Khaled. While he has remained tight-lipped about featured guests, he did confirm a collaboration with the Houston hottie.
“I’ll be honest with you,” Khaled told Zane Lowe, “You know, me and Megan, we got one. Yeah, we cooked something up.”
Earlier this month, Khaled released the album’s first two singles with Drake, “Popstar” and “Greece.” He was planning to drop the tracks earlier in the year before the pandemic hit.
“I was going to come up on your head top of February. But I said, ‘Hold up. Let’s figure out what’s going on,'” he said. “Me and Drake, that’s my brother for real. I’m sure you could see that, and we had these great inspiring conversations throughout the years; and when ‘Popstar’ was created, I went to Toronto and my son was born.”
But the father of two feels that the music couldn’t have come at a better time. “What I love about Drake too is, me and him, you always want to make sure it feels right,” he added. “That’s the way I like to rock, too. I want it to feel right and stars aligned for us to come with two keys and it felt right. I even told Drake on the phone, I said, ‘Yo Drake, we got to be the light. We got to.’ And he agreed.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Khaled explained why he titled the album Khaled Khaled. “I’ve always wanted to title my album that, but I always wanted to wait to the right time in my life to title that,” he said. “And Khaled means, in Arabic, it means immortal. It means forever. And that’s what I represent forever love. And we give forever. And we the best. So I’m going to break out Khaled Khaled more through the process, through the rollout. And this was a way to come with two keys. My first and last name is the same.”
Khaled continues to field collaborators for the album. “I’m in the process of reaching out to people right now ’cause the way I work, I get the ideas and the energy and the sound and the production right and then I come and give them that Khaled presentation. I’m in album mode. It’s a process for progress.”

Superman's Black Suit Revealed in Clip from Snyder Cut of 'Justice League'!
The Snyder Cut of Justice League is in the works and director Zack Snyder just shared a short clip from the upcoming film!
Snyder was the director on the DC Comics movie Justice League, but he had to withdraw from the film in the middle of production due to a family emergency. Joss Whedon stepped in to finish the film and changed a lot of Snyder‘s original vision. Now, HBO Max will be releasing the Snyder Cut next year.
Zack debuted the clip during an appearance on a JusticeCon panel on Saturday (July 25). In the clip, Henry Cavill‘s Superman is seen meeting up with Jeremy Irons‘ Alfred after coming back from the dead. He is wearing the black suit that was not used in the previously released version of the film. After flying down to ground, Superman says “I’m assuming you’re Alfred.”
During the panel, Zack confirmed that he is restoring the film to the intended aspect ratio of 1:4:3 and he will only use footage that he was there to work on.
“There will be no chance on earth that I will use a shot prior or after I left the movie,” he said. “I would destroy the movie, I would set it on fire before I would use a single frame that I did not photograph. That is a f—ing hard fact.”
One of the stars of Justice League recently claimed that Whedon was “abusive” to the cast and crew of the film.
Fairfax County high school to be renamed for Rep. John Lewis!
The Fairfax County school board voted unanimously Thursday to rename Robert E. Lee High School in Springfield, Virginia, after the late U.S. Rep. John Lewis.
The new name will take effect with the start of the upcoming school year.
Lewis, a Georgia congressman who was also a civil rights icon, died at age 80 last Friday. His name was well under consideration before his passing.
One Fairfax County school board member called the timing of the decision “bittersweet.”
The school board first voted on the school’s name change last month and held a monthlong period of public comment on possible new names, it said in a statement later Thursday.
Other names under consideration included Barack Obama, Cesar Chavez, Mildred Loving, Central Springfield and Legacy.
“The name Robert E. Lee is forever connected to the Confederacy, and Confederate values are ones that do not align with our community,” said Lee District School Board member Tamara Derenak Kaufax in a statement. She was one of the members who proposed the name change.
“I believe that John Lewis’ extraordinary life and advocacy for racial justice will serve as an inspiration to our students and community for generations to come,” she said.
Board Chair Ricardy Anderson called the move “an appropriate tribute to an individual who is a true American hero.”
The change in Virginia’s largest school system comes nearly three years after it removed the name of Confederate Gen. J.E.B. Stuart from another high school, renaming it Justice High.
The school board also voted Thursday to rename Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples’ Day for the 2020-21 and the 2021-22 school year calendars.
LeBron James Joins Push To Help People With Felony Convictions Vote In November Presidential Election!
A group formed by the Los Angeles Lakers star and other Black athletes and entertainers are using their platforms to fight to register Floridians with felony records by offering to help pay court debts and fees so they can cast ballots in the crucial November presidential election.
More Than A Vote was established by James and others as a result of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The group announced on Friday that it will donate $100,000 to help pay outstanding court debts for ex-felons so that they will be allowed to register to vote, Politico reports. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The funds will go directly to Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, which in 2018 successfully pushed a constitutional amendment that lifted Florida’s lifetime voting ban on people who had felony convictions.
After the passing, the Republican-led state Legislature decided to raise the bar for felons to vote, the law that is currently be heard in a federal court.
“Your right to vote shouldn’t depend upon whether or not you can pay to exercise it,” Miami Heat forward and group member Udonis Haslem said in a written statement.
One goal of the partnership is to ensure that “formerly incarcerated American citizens — many of them Black and brown — are able to pay their outstanding fines and fees and register to vote in the 2020 election and beyond.” The coalition has raised $1.5 million already for its fees and fines fund, and the partnership with Lebron’s group is to help push the awareness and effort surrounding the issue of ex-felons voting.
Desmond Meade, executive director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, is hopeful that the partnership will not only strengthen democracy but also make more voices heard.
Democrats and civil rights groups have argued that the voting requirements are similar to an unconstitutional poll tax, which has resulted in a bitter legal battle. A study conducted projected that more than 775,000 people in Florida that have felony convictions have financial obligations that deem them ineligible to vote under the law.
More Than a Vote has also teamed with Magnolia Pictures and Participant, a media company that shares the socially-driven mission, and will host an online screening of a new documentary centered around the late Rep. John Lewis, the civil rights icon who passed last week.
Athletes, as well as artists, will promote the screening and will use the proceeds for the coalitions fees and fines fund.
Another goal of More Than A vote, which was formed in June, is to educate and protect the rights of black voters, James and other athletes say they are dedicated to Black political empowerment. James is acting on his promise to use his social media platform to combat voter suppression and draw attention to efforts intended to restrict the voting rights of minorities.
A U.S. District Court judge ripped Florida’s voting law in May, calling it unconstitutional to make people pay to vote, despite that they are felons and have fees related to their crimes.
However, Republic Governor Ron DeSantis appealed the ruling in the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, which put the hearing on hold. A hearing is scheduled for August 18, the same date as the Florida primary.
Keep going, LeBron.
John Saxon, 'Enter the Dragon' and 'Nightmare on Elm Street' Actor, Dead at 83!
Enter the Dragon actor John Saxon has died at the age of 83, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The star who shared screen time with Bruce Lee was a Hollywood fixture for years, earning a Golden Globe nomination in 1966 for The Appaloosa opposite Marlon Brando and appearing on numerous television series like Dynasty and Falcon Crest as Lorenzo Lamas' father.
He is best known for Enter the Dragon and his role in cult films like Black Christmas and the Nightmare on Elm Street series with director Wes Craven. He appears as Nancy Thompson's police officer father in the first and third installments of the series, later returning as himself in New Nightmare in 1994.
Saxon was born Carmine Orrico in 1936, the oldest of three children in Brooklyn, and was later discovered after leaving a theater at the age of 17. Hollywood agent Henry Wilson signed him and quickly led to him becoming part of the Universal family. He attended workshops at the studio, building on his studies in drama at Carnegie Hall.
His first film was 1955's Running Wild, followed by Rock, Pretty Baby, Summer Love and The Reluctant Debutante with Sandra Dee. Saxon also became known for tough-guy roles, including a role alongside Sydney Pollack and Robert Redford in 1962's War Hunt. They would film again together for The Electric Horseman over a decade later. He also appeared in the Joe Don Baker vehicle Mitchell, famously lampooned on Mystery Science Theater 3000, and Joe Kidd alongside Clint Eastwood, based on one of Elmore Leonard's many westerns.
But most audiences know him for his horror roles and his co-starring spot with Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon. For that film, he didn't have the fighting skill that Lee or Jim Kelly demonstrated. Saxon held his own though and became a memorable part of Lee's only mainstream American film in 1973. The actor had nothing but high praise for Lee, though, and felt no judgment for his combat shortcomings.
"[Lee] took me seriously. I would tell him I would rather do it this way, and he'd say, 'OK, try it that way," Saxon told the LA Times in a 2012 interview. He also spoke highly of Marlon Brando, who he knew as a teen according The Hollywood Reporter while looking back at his award-winning role in The Appaloosa.
"He was a friend," Saxon said. "I took him to dinner one night. He said, 'I am going back to New York — do you have a coat?' I said, 'Sure, I got a coat.’ He never gave me back the coat." He would also note that Brando seemed bored with the movie stemming from financial issues with his father, so the experience wasn't the dream you'd expect.
Younger fans likely know his horror resume a little clearer. Saxon worked with Roger Corman, played a policeman in the Canadian holiday horror Black Christmas alongside Margot Kidder and 2001: A Space Odyssey star Keir Dullea, and helped kick off the Nightmare franchise as the clueless but loving police officer father Donald Thompson. He doesn't make it through the entire series of films, but Wes Craven did bring him back for the meta-horror romp New Nightmare as himself. He's a definite "that guy" in many films and his career went the distance. Rest in peace.
Kevin Hart on Playing a "Scrappy Action Star" in New Series Die Hart!
A career pivot may be in order for Kevin Hart, since, according to him, he's much better suited for action than comedy!
By Kevin's own admission, and despite the fact that he's already starred in a few action flicks, he doesn't exactly possess the typical traits of an action hero. However, his new Quibi show Die Hart pretty much personifies the genre.
In the series, which also stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Kevin play a fictionalized version of himself on a quest to land the action-movie role of a lifetime. The actor discussed the role in an exclusive conversation with E! host Lilliana Vazquez, which you can watch in the above clip!
"As an action star that has all of the tools to be exactly what you would expect to see..." Kevan said in the video before telling the Pop of the Morning host what exactly those tools are, starting with "a deep voice."
"You know, they feel like action stars need this crazy tone and I don't have that," Kevin said. "But I'm still able to come across with the action stuff."
Another important qualifier? The ability to engage in "hand-to-hand combat."
"I'm more of an on-the-spot, fly kinda guy. Always have been," the 41-year-old comedian explained. "Feisty, scrappy!"
"A scrappy action star—haven't really seen a lot of those!" he added.
"Last and not least, probably speed," Kevin continued. "And I'll tell you something, I'm not that fast. I'm very slow."
When Nathalie gets her chance to talk about her action abilities, she ever so subtly points out that Kevin can't relate to having one of her strengths: "I think I am, generally in the action space, I've been much more kind of an intellectual mind—which, you know, is something that I specifically bring to the table."
