Tiffany Haddish for InStyle US - January 2020!
When you hear the word “boss,” who comes to mind? “Oprah,” says Tiffany Haddish, sitting with me in an empty back room at the Midtown Manhattan hotel where she’s staying. “Jennifer Aniston. Ellen. Melinda Gates. Dave Chappelle. David Letterman ... To me, they’re bosses. They have companies going, but they also use their positions to help others.” Haddish is in New York to film the comedy Here Today with Billy Crystal and is also getting ready for the release of her new Netflix special, Black Mitzvah, which came out on her 40th birthday, December 3.
The title isn’t just a clever name — Haddish started studying the Torah after learning as a teen that her father was an Eritrean Jew. As soon as we finish our talk, her rabbi, Susan Silverman (sister of Sarah), is coming to meet her at the hotel for a Hebrew lesson. Haddish was throwing herself a bat mitzvah on her birthday too, so she was feeling the pressure to perfect her delivery. “It’s hard — harder than Japanese!” she says. “But I’m getting it. I’m getting it.”
This isn’t her first mitzvah. Haddish estimates she’s attended over 500 bar and bat mitzvahs during the 11 years she spent as an “energy producer” at an events company in California. She got the gig when she was just 16. “My job was to break the ice,” she says. “To bring the kids out and orchestrate the event to keep it all moving in an orderly fashion.”
For the first 10 years Haddish held the job, she says she had to work extra hard to fight off jealousy. “All these girls and boys had mamas and dads who were willing to throw them a party that’s basically a wedding,” she says. “I wanted that. I wanted to dance with my dad and have my mom light a candle with me.”
Haddish’s father left the family when she was 3. When Haddish was 8, her mother got in a car accident and was not the same afterward, becoming abusive. Haddish and her siblings were placed in foster care when she was 13, and she was homeless at several points as a young adult.
She says her feelings of jealousy dissipated when she turned 26 and reconnected with her father. Haddish says she essentially started looking at her life from a position of “It could have been worse.” “My mom could’ve died when I was born, and my dad could’ve gotten killed a week later. I could be moving around having no brothers or sisters. Those people in my life make me rich, and even if they hurt me sometimes, they make me grow. They did the best they could. I’ve forgiven my mom for a lot of stuff. She was sick, so I can’t really be mad. But 15-year-old, 12-year-old, 10-year-old Tiffany...is mad.”
These days Haddish is the adult version of an energy producer, working especially hard to keep bettering herself personally and professionally. “Turning 40, I’m much more in tune with who I am. I’m a grown woman. And I have a better understanding of where I’m going.” Learning Hebrew for her bat mitzvah is just one of the things she’s working toward on the side while expanding her Hollywood rΓ©sumΓ©. (Besides voicing a number of characters in some of the sharpest animated movies and shows, she also hosts Kids Say the Darndest Things on ABC and hosts and produces Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready on Netflix.) Taking care of her family is another project — her brother, mother, and grandmother currently live with her in her house in Los Angeles
“I’m always setting goals, and when I accomplish them, I’m like, ‘OK, five more,’” she says. When Haddish got her final paycheck for acting in 2017’s Girls Trip, she achieved a major milestone — she paid off her mortgage and got herself fully out of debt. “And then I went all-the-way, full-out shopping,” she says with a smile.
Now, stop for a second. Guess what Haddish bought on her “all-the-way, full-out” shopping trip: Another McQueen gown? A designer bag or three? No, she bought a microscope. (Well, technically, a microscope and a bunch of petri dishes.) Haddish says she’s always been interested in science, in discovering what’s happening on a microbial level. When she first got her microscope, she says, she stayed up for three days straight looking at samples of everything.
When she had a date over to her house, she’d offer him something to drink, and the moment he went home, she’d stealthily swab the cup he’d used to check out the bacteria inside his mouth. “I like to look at germs,” she says. “Put them in the refrigerator and see how they act, put them in the sun ... I look at all the juices. I had to move my lab to my bedroom once my grandma and brother moved into my house,” she says. “And I have a section in the refrigerator with a note that says, ‘Do not touch anything in this drawer!’”
She’s recently been studying the soil on her property to grow more robust plants and has considered buying a travel microscope for the time she’s on location to see “what’s going on” out there. When she shared this idea with her friend, the comedian Kevin Hart, she says he replied, “‘You’re going to do what? When do you have time to see what’s going on?’ I said, ‘Man, you make the time when you’re curious. You make the time.’ And he was like, ‘Tiffany! Focus! Focus.’” She laughs. “Like, ‘OK, Kevin, you’re probably right. I should focus. But there’s a lot of guys trying to date me, and I need to know if they got germs!’”
#RHOA: Eva Marcille Wins Custody Battle With Ex-Boyfriend Kevin McCall!
Eva Marcille has much to celebrate. On Friday, December 13, the Real Housewives of Atlanta star was granted full custody of her 5-year-old daughter, Marley Rae, who she shares with ex-boyfriend Kevin McCall
A judge in Fulton County, Georgia dismissed Kevin’s, 34, request for custody and child support based on a technicality, according to reports. The “Naked” singer wanted the case to be moved down south after Eva, 35, had already been granted full custody in 2014 by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge. According to legal documents, Kevin didn’t give adequate reasoning as to why the case should be moved, therefore resulting in the dismissal of his case.
Eva and Kevin have been in and out of court for some time now. The Bravo star called her ex a “ticking time bomb” and requested that the judge not give him custody of their daughter after he reportedly made a series of violent threats. During a taping of The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, the American’s Next Top Model star recalled the violent nature of her relationship with Kevin after giving birth to their daughter. “About a month after having Marley, it didn’t stop; it got worse,” the model said. “And it got worse with her.”
As reported in November, Kevin was arrested in the Fulton County courthouse on Tuesday, October 6 following a physical altercation with a courthouse security guard. The fight happened just before a custody hearing was set to begin over his daughter.
The producer refused to stop sharing videos to his Instagram live while in the courthouse after guards repeatedly told him that it wasn’t allowed.
Kevin allegedly threatened a guard and challenged him to take off his badge and fight. “All sheriffs and cops don’t talk to me unless you gon’ take your badge off and go lock yourself in a room,” Kevin said. “I’ll
When backup arrived to try and detain Kevin, he broke loose. Shortly after, officers attempted once again to try and detain him, according to cops on the scene, Kevin and a sergeant fell down a nearby escalator.
The “Deuces” rapper was hit with four misdemeanors charges including obstruction of a law enforcement officer, terroristic threats, disorderly conduct and simple assault. The rapper was also hit with one felony count for criminal damage to property in the 2nd degree.

#HipHopNews: Juice Wrld Laid To Rest At Private Open-Casket Funeral!
HARVEY, IL – Friends and relatives of the late Juice Wrld said their farewells during a private open-casket funeral on Friday (December 13). The services took place at the Holy Temple Cathedral Church of God in Harvey, Illinois near his hometown of Chicago.
Juice Wrld’s mother Carmella Wallace penned a loving tribute for the funeral program, which was obtained by TMZ.
“My dear son Jarad, God trusted me to raise you and I poured all I had into you as the Lord guided me,” Wallace wrote. “We were inseparable and even though you left home early, we were always in each other’s hearts and always had a special bond.”
“We were always overjoyed to see each other, and you still called me ‘mommy’ as you hugged and kiss me when you saw me. Your love was pure and innocent, and your heart was genuine. You truly cared about people and wanted to make the world a better place. I am going to miss you dearly. Rest in peace my dear one; mommy loves you.”
The program also included multiple black-and-white portraits of the 21-year-old, along with photo collages of Juice Wrld and his loved ones.
Juice Wrld died last Sunday (December 8) at Advocate Christ Medical Center after suffering a seizure at Chicago’s Midway Airport.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office is still working on an official cause of death pending several tests, including cardiac pathology, neuropathology, toxicology and histology. However, the multi-platinum selling artist reportedly ingested several Percocet pills prior to his death.
Juice Wrld’s siblings, Brian, Alyssa and Maya Wallace, remembered their brother fondly in the funeral program as well.
Opening with a Plato quote, they wrote, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, fight to the imagination and life to everything. Jarad, you brought life, light and laughter to everyone you met. We will carry you in our hearts always. We love you.”

Democrat Jeff Van Drew meets with Trump to discuss party switch From Democrat to Republican!
A party switch by Rep. Jeff Van Drew is imminent. According to several high-level sources with ties to Van Drew who spoke on the condition of anonymity, Van Drew’s chief of staff has begun notifying the right-of-center Democrat’s campaign and congressional staffs that the first-term representative will join the Republican party.
Some of those that were told of the move have indicated they intend to resign.
The switch has not yet occurred, but appears to be imminent.
Van Drew did not immediately respond to a call and voice mail message made at 2:37 p.m.
Over preceding weeks, support for Van Drew among local Democrats has ebbed away, the retreat fueled by his opposition to impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump.
Atlantic County Democratic Chairman Michael Suleiman recently told Van Drew he could not guarantee the congressman a primary victory unless he moved on the issue.
Brigid Harrison, a well-known political science professor who lives in Atlantic County, was considering challenging Van Drew from the left next year.
Van Drew hasn’t moved. Instead, he has continually signaled — in incredibly clear terms — that he intended to vote against two articles of impeachment the House has drafted against Trump when they come to a vote before the full House. That vote could come as early as next week, though some Democratic sources on the Hill say it won’t come that early.
The congressman was one of only two Democrats to vote against a House resolution establishing procedures for public impeachment hearings.
Some of the state’s top Democrats, including Gov. Phil Murphy, Senate President Steve Sweeney and U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, have declined to endorse Van Drew’s re-election over the past week, with Murphy and Sweeney citing impeachment and Menendez deferring to the second congressional district’s Democratic County chairs.
Support for a switch was mixed on the Republican side. Many local Republicans who have fought Van Drew in the decades before he ascended to Congress, including Cape May County Republican Chairman Marcus Karavan, have said he should remain in the Democratic Party.
State Sen. Michael Testa, the Cumberland County GOP chairman, on Thursday declined to say whether Van Drew should be welcomed into the fold.
Testa is an honorary chairman of Trump’s New Jersey re-election campaign.
State Sen. Joe Pennacchio, who is also an honorary chair of the president’s state re-election campaign, said his party should welcome Van Drew.
White House sources have told the New Jersey Globe that the president wants Van Drew to switch, and The Washington Post on Saturday reported Trump made a personal plea to Van Drew pushing the congressman’s defection this week.
The optics of a Van Drew defection — that of a Democrat leaving the party over a belief that it has lost its way on impeachment — play well into the White House narrative on the investigations against Trump.
It’s unclear how many local officials have been told about Van Drew’s imminent switch, but at least two, one on either side of the aisle, were unaware of the move Saturday afternoon.
Three Republicans, David Richter, Brian Fitzherbert and Robert Patterson, were seeking the nod to run against Van Drew, and while a Trump endorsement could help clear the primary, there’s no guarantee that Van Drew will win renomination uncontested.
Richter has already won the party line in Burlington County, and he told the New Jersey Globe he would stay in the race if Van Drew defected.
Suleiman, who attacked Van Drew following news of his party switch, said Democrats still intend to play for the seat.
“I think Jeff Van Drew is a coward,” Suleiman said. “I think he stabbed our party in the back. It’s a real profile in courage. Instead of voting how you’re going to vote and take the heat, he decides to screw us and just support the other party.”
Hallmark Channel Faces Backlash After Removing Zola Commerical of Same-Sex Couple!
The Hallmark Channel is in the middle of quite the controversy. Earlier this month, the channel started airing a commercial from Zola.com – a wedding planning and registry company – showing two women exchanging vows and later kissing during their wedding.
Shortly after the commercial started to air, conservative group One Million Moms slammed Hallmark and started a petition to get the network to pull the commercial and all other LGBTQ content.
“Recently, One Million Moms received concerns about Hallmark airing a commercial from Zola.com in which two lesbians are shown kissing at the end of their wedding ceremony,” the group said on its website. “Parents need to know they could now come face-to-face with the LGBT agenda when they sit down to watch the Hallmark Channel.”
Hallmark then removed the commercial and issued a statement to The New York Times defending their decision.
“The decision not to air overt public displays of affection in our sponsored advertisement, regardless of the participants, is in line with our current policy, which includes not featuring political advertisements, offensive language, R-rated movie content and many other categories,” the Hallmark Channel spokesperson shared.
Critics then started coming for Hallmark, pointing out that the network did not remove a Zola commercial that featured a heterosexual couple kissing.
Zola has since released a statement saying that the company vows to feature “all kinds” of couples in their advertisement.
“We stand behind this commercial 150%,” Zola said in a statement. “We want all couples to feel welcomed and celebrated and we will always feature all kinds of love in our marketing.”
WATCH
GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis chimed in on the situation, slamming Hallmark’s “discriminatory” and “hypocritical” decision to remove the commercial.
“The Hallmark Channel’s decision to remove LGBTQ families in such a blatant way is discriminatory and especially hypocritical coming from a network that claims to present family programming and also recently stated they are ‘open’ to LGBTQ holiday movies,” Sarah Kate Ellis said. “As so many other TV and cable networks showcase, LGBTQ families are part of family programming. Advertisers on The Hallmark Channel should see this news and question whether they want to be associated with a network that chooses to bow to fringe anti-LGBTQ activist groups, which solely exist to harm LGBTQ families.”

Cardi B Surprises Offset With $500,000 In Cash For His Birthday!
Cardi B is lacing Offset with a major bag for his birthday. The “Money” rapper surprised her husband for his 28th birthday by giving him half-a-million dollars. She shared video from the surprise moment she opened the refrigerator to reveal $500,000 in cold hard cash
“What else can I give somebody that got everything? The fridge!” she said before her bodyguard opened the door to reveal stacks of cash sitting on a shelf.
Offset was in disbelief as he grabbed the money. “That’s $500,000,” said Cardi, while a stunned Offset replied, “You don’t gotta give me this money.”
Cardi responded, “I don’t know what to give you so I gotta give you something. You could buy a car, you could buy more clothes, you could buy jewelry, you could buy me more Birkin bags. Shit, you could do whatever the hell you want.”
Offset could barely carry all the cash as Cardi captured the moment on her phone. “Happy birthday and don’t expect no Christmas gift from me, motherfucker,” she added. They both exchanged “I love yous” before kissing.
There was even more money to go around as Offset celebrated his birthday with friends including Quavo and Saweetie. Cash filled the floor at the strip club-themed bash on Friday night in L.A.
The couple has been known for buying extravagant gifts for each other. Cardi bought Offset a Rolls-Royce Wraith for his 26th birthday in 2017 and he gave her a Lamborghini Urus in 2018 followed by a massive Titanic heart-shaped ring for her 27th birthday this year.
Earlier this month, Cardi defended her husband against infidelity rumors following an Instagram hack that allegedly exposed a conversation between him and 6ix9ine’s girlfriend Jade.
Orlando Jones Fired From Starz Series ‘American Gods’, Jones Responds!
American Gods’ star Orlando Jones has confirmed he‘s been fired from the show by Season Three showrunner, Charles Eglee, and took to Twitter to share the upsetting, yet predictable, news. Jones tweeted a video of himself explaining how Eglee fired him because he was unhappy with the message Jones was sending through the interpretation of the African god of stories Anansi, aka Mr. Nancy. “September 10, 2018, I was fired from American Gods,” Jones says in the video.
“There will be no more Mr. Nancy. Don’t let these motherf**kers tell you they love Mr. Nancy. They don’t. I’m not going to name names, but the new Season Three showrunner is Connecticut-born and Yale-educated, so he’s very smart. And he thinks that Mr. Nancy’s angry, get s*** done is the wrong message for black America. That’s right, this white man sits in that decision-making chair and I’m sure he has many black BFFs who are his advisors who made it clear to him that if they did not get rid of that angry god Mr. Nancy he’d start a Denmark Vesey uprising in this country. I mean, what else could it be?”
Despite the situation, Jones did have kind words for the creators of ‘American Gods’. “To the wonderful Neil Gaiman, thank you for allowing me to play this role, for opening the door for me to become a writer and a producer on Season Two of American Gods, thank you, sir. To the magnificent Bryan Fuller and the incredible Michael Green, thank you for creating this series and for allowing me also to become Mr. Nancy. I hope the fans enjoyed it because really this is about you and I hope you loved it as much as I loved doing it.”
‘American Gods’ is based on the fantasy novel of the same name by British author Neil Gaiman and is described as a blend of Americana, fantasy, and various strands of ancient and modern mythology, centering on the mysterious and taciturn character, Shadow Moon.
Radio Icon Tom Joyner Says Farewell After 25 Years On Air!
After 25 years on the radio, #TomJoyner will be ending his beloved radio show “Tom Joyner Morning Show.”
Joyner’s last show aired Friday morning. It is one of the longest-running radio shows for Black entertainment and news. “Twenty-five years ago, there was no template for a syndicated Urban radio show and we worked hard to prove that we could successfully produce and market a national platform that would entertain, inform and empower African-American listeners,” he said in a statement to his millions of listeners.
Taking Joyner’s spot will be a long-running radio show “The Rickey Smiley Morning Show.” According to Radio Insight, the show will now be moving to several of Joyner’s affiliates. As for retirement, Joyner says he plans on devoting his time fully to his Tom Joyner Foundation, which works to provide students from historically black colleges and universities with scholarships, among other initiatives.
Joyner will be forever missed on radio and fans are paying him a sweet farewell online. “It’s hard to be entertaining, informative and educational without ever talking down to your audience,” wrote sports journalist Bomani Jones. “Tom did that day after day for decades. I wish him and everyone who’s worked on that shows the best. They’ve done a lot for a lot of people.”
Sen. #KamalaHarris also opened up about Joyner’s legacy and impact. “Tom Joyner is a legend and has played a critical role in building community and lifting up all voices,” she tweeted. “He is Black history. It was an honor to be a guest on the @TJMShow but to also call him a friend. Enjoy retirement!”

New App Will Help Parents Find Black Santas Near Them!
Representation is important, parents often want their children to see individuals that look like them.
Parents who want to take their children to see a Santa Claus who looks like them can now turn to an app.
This is all thanks to a Texas mom, Jihan Woods who struggled for years to find a Santa that her children could relate to.
According to CBS News, studies show that children with a positive attitude about their own racial identity do better in school and are less likely to engage in risky behavior.
Woods launched a campaign to help fund her Black Santa app and was able to raise $5,000 in 30 days.
I really wanted my children to see a Santa Claus that looks like them. It’s important to me that they experience diversity in all aspects of their lives, Santa included,” Woods said on the app’s website.
This app comes just a year after the Ravenel Agency created an app that allows children to video chat with an African American Santa.
The app lists Santas in 35 states and Washington, D.C., and can be found in the App store and Google Play.
