The Daily Buzz For July 29 ☕πŸ“°☕

Melissa McCarthy Covers August 2019 Issue of The WSJ Magazine!
Melissa McCarthy gets glam for WSJ. Magazine’s August cover, out on newsstands Saturday, July 27th. The actress /creative exec powerhouse has a slate of upcoming projects and a new drama, The Kitchen (co-starring Tiffany Haddish and Elizabeth Moss) coming this month. In the interview, she talks comedy, fashion and family and shows WSJ. Magazine how she made it and gets it all done.

On her morning routine: She and Falcone have two daughters, Vivian, 12, and Georgette, 9. And so, as a busy working mother, she gets up at 4 a.m. (“I’m like a weird old man,” she says), prepares breakfast, takes out the family’s two dogs, gets her girls ready for the day and then she or her husband drives them to school. “It’s the normal: homework and somebody forgets their violin,” she says, characterizing their life. Tonight, in fact, she will head to a violin recital—her youngest daughter’s first.
On her IRL personality: “I’m certainly much more audacious as other people,” McCarthy says of her on-screen personas, as she settles into the backseat of a black SUV en route to a bar near her Los Angeles home. “You get to scream at people or say insane things and not think twice about it. Whereas I would never do that in my real life.”

On her fashion line: “I’ve been every shape and size that’s out there, and I just found it harder and harder to find stuff,” she says. “I thought, I’m modern and young and want to wear what every- body else is wearing. Why is this such a strange request?” (Melissa McCarthy Seven7 is no longer in production, but McCarthy is working on a new label. “I just wanted to make it a little smaller and more accessible,” she says. “I wanted to work on keeping prices down and for it to be for everyone.”)
On her rebellious teen style: Midway through high school, she grew restless and started going out to bars and clubs in Chicago. She began to dye her hair raven blue-black (“I believe it was a Clairol color”) and dress goth. “If Siouxsie Sioux and Robert Smith from The Cure had a baby, that was me,” she says, laughing. “In a way, it was my first time doing a character.” She wanted to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology, but her parents deemed her too wild for New York, so she enrolled at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. “You’d take these sewing classes, and they were like, ‘We’re going to make a potholder,’”

On her beginnings in New York: Brian Atwood, a childhood friend (who would later become a well-known shoe designer) from the nearby town of Joliet, Illinois, came to visit her. “He said, ‘What are you doing here? Why aren’t you in New York?’ I said, ‘I don’t know.’ And three days later I moved,” she explains.

On the compassion she has for her anti-hero characters: Her performances are compassionate and never mean-spirited. “We’ve all been some version of that woman,” she says of her challenging anti-heroines. “If you can lovingly shine a light on people’s idiosyncrasies, that’s what makes us go, ‘We’re all idiots, and it’s all OK.’” “I’d be heartbroken to stop doing comedies,” McCarthy says. “That sounds terrible.”
Elisabeth Moss (her co-star in The Kitchen) on McCarthy: “She’s shockingly normal and down-to-earth,” says Elisabeth Moss, “I feel like that’s said of so many famous people. But Melissa actually is, like, in her core.”
Octavia Spencer (friend and fellow Groundlings member): “The moment she walked onto the stage we’d all chuckle in anticipation. She was so beloved. The lines were always around the corner,”

Brian Atwood (her childhood friend from Illinois who convinced her to move to NYC): “We pretty much slept in the living room on a futon that we pulled out,” he says. Atwood understood that McCarthy had a true comedic gift (“She was literally the funniest person I knew”) and that she had to do something with it. McCarthy’s first night in New York, they were in line at a grocery store, and Atwood picked up a copy of the Village Voice and told her, “You’re doing stand-up tomorrow.” He began booking her for open mic gigs at various clubs. He remembers one of her early shows at the Duplex: “She brought the house down. I had chills because we had just witnessed something special.”

#RHOA: Bling Bling! Now we know she’s Engaged can we talk about Cynthia Bailey's BIG $85K Engagement Ring?
Cynthia Bailey got a gorgeous diamond ring when fiancΓ© Mike Hill popped the question! She got engaged to the sports journalist, 48, after 14 months of dating. Hill proposed to Bailey with a gorgeous 5-carat princess cut solitaire ring in Atlanta at the grand opening of her new business, The Bailey WineCellar.

The reality star’s new bling from Simon G. Jewelry was purchased at Solomon Brothers, and consists of a stone worth about $70,000 as well as an elegant white gold band covered in a mixture of princess cut and baguette diamonds — which costs just over $14,000.
Altogether, the stunning sparkler, which was purchased at Solomon Brothers in Atlanta, is worth around $85,000.

“Mike selected a modern engagement ring that incorporates both princess cut and baguette diamonds which beautifully accents her center stone,” says a representative from Simon G. Jewelry. “We’ve seen a lot of trends in bridal that integrate various diamond cuts, and Cynthia’s ring is absolutely stunning.”
The surprise proposal was a family affair, with Bailey’s daughter Noelle Robinson, 19, and Hill’s two daughters — Kayla, 17, and Ashlee, 19 — in attendance, alongside a crowd that included some of the couple’s closest friends as well as Bailey’s RHOA cast mates.
According to a source on the scene, Hill initially made it seem like he was giving a toast in honor of Bailey’s opening, before Kayla interrupted to hand him a bottle with a big question mark on it — telling him, “No dad, I think you should propose like this.”
As he did, Noelle, Kayla and Ashlee all gathered behind him with a hand-made puzzle piece sign that real, “Can we be a family?”
This will be the second marriage for both Bailey and Hill, who currently works at Fox Sports 1 out of Los Angeles.
She was previously married to Peter Thomas from 2010-17.
Bailey has made no secret about her desire to walk down the aisle again.

“I want to marry Mike. I love Mike. He’s my soulmate,” she told PEOPLE in December. “We talk about getting married all the time. I’m hoping a proposal will happen soon, if not before the end of this year, then hopefully next. I’ve certainly been dropping enough hints! But God has a plan, so I’m just letting it go.”
“We’re not jumping into this blind. We both have kids and we both love each other very much. We know marriage is the next step,” she added.
Bailey is currently filming the 12th season of RHOA, which is expected to premiere before the end of the year.

#Empire: Jussie Smollett receives encouragement from Rev. Jesse Jackson
When Jussie met Jesse. And it was low key.Sneed is told actor Jussie Smollett, the star of one of Chicago’s most riveting personal dramas, is now “ basically” camping out in New York while working on a “new project” and “lining up work.”

But Sneed has learned Smollett, embroiled in controversy since telling Chicago police in January he had been brutally assaulted by two men who yelled racist and homophobic slurs, hit Chicago under the radar last month to get a little ministry from the Rev. Jesse Jackson.
“It’s true Jussie paid us a visit and, yes, I did minister to him,” said Jackson — who has been supportive of Smollett, one of the stars on the FOX TV series “Empire” when the hoax imbroglio erupted.

Smollett, who now faces the threat of a special prosecutor investigation branded a travesty of justice by his attorneys, joined Jackson and members of his family for a Father’s Day brunch at a Saturday morning Rainbow PUSH Coalition forum on June 15.
“Jussie requested the visit to see Rev. Jackson before spending some time with people with real challenges and problems,” said a Sneed source. “He is a member of the Rainbow Coalition.”

Jackson told the Sun-Times in March during a Smollett visit: “PUSH has always been a house of refuge.
“It’s part of what we do, reaching out to people who are in distress, and we have done so in many high-profile cases over the years, from Sammy Davis Jr., when he hugged President Nixon and black folks turned against him, to Bobby Rush, after police tried to kill him in the Black Panthers raid.”

The source, who claims he had just communicated with the former “Empire” TV show star, said Smollett just had dinner in New York at Ricardo Steak House in Harlem last Saturday with his close friend and “Empire” star Taraji P. Henson and her fiancΓ©, Kelvin Hayden.
“They talked about “Empire” and what Jussie is going to do moving forward because he is still under contract there,” the source added. “Jussie and the cast are still very close.”

Renewed for its sixth season, the “Empire” series has extended the actor’s option “by mutual agreement,” leaving the door open for him to return at some point.

#BoxOfficeNews:The 'Lion King' again is #1 at 75 Mil and Tarantino's 'Once Upon a Time in America comes in at #2 with a  $40M Debut
While the weekend wasn't quite as large as anticipated, it was still the second straight weekend to top the same weekend last year. Leading the way for a second weekend in a row was Disney's The Lion King as it will soon top $1 billion worldwide, followed by a $40 million debut for Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, serving as the director's largest three-day debut to date. Additionally, A24's The Farewell found a spot in the top ten playing in just 135 locations while both Spider-Man: Far from Home and Aladdin topped $1 billion globally this weekend.

Disney's The Lion King found itself atop the weekend box office yet again, though it fell much harder than expected in its second weekend. With an estimated $75.5 million, the remake of the animated classic dipped -60.6% in its sophomore frame as the film's domestic total now stands over $351 million. While the film did deliver the largest opening weekend when compared to the top Disney Reimaginings, it also resulted in the largest drop among those films, which can be a byproduct of such a large debut. The full story will be told over the coming weekends when it comes to the film's theatrical longevity in the domestic marketplace.

Internationally, the film added another $142.8 million as its overseas total now stands at $611.9 million for a global cume reaching $962.7 million. As we'll detail shortly, this was a weekend for films topping $1 billion globally and The Lion King will be joining that crowd soon enough with plenty more to come as the film has still yet to open in Japan (8/9) and Italy (8/21).

In the runner-up position is Sony's debut of Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with an estimated $40.35 million, serving as the largest opening weekend for the director, topping the $38 million opening for Inglourious Basterds back in August 2009. Opening day audiences gave the film a "B" CinemaScore, which is almost a grade point below the "A-" for Django Unchained. The crowd was 54% male and 64% were aged 25 or older.

‘Real Housewives Of Potomac’ Star Katie Rost Gets Engaged, Her Fiance recieveas An Heirloom Ring

When you know, you know! Congrats to BRAVO’s The Real Housewives of Potomac cast member Katie Rost. Her boyfriend Jesse popped the question and she said yes. She confirmed he did it with a very special ring.

“An heirloom ring, and I said yes. We are engaged! Jesse’s mom loves this ring. I am proud to wear it.”
Some of her RHOP co-stars congratulated her on social media.

The two have been dating for a few months. She revealed him on her social media in late March.
This will be Rost’s second marriage as she was previously married to a man named Dr. James Rocco from 2011-2016. They have three children together. The engagement is much-needed good news for Rost as fans saw her go through an ugly custody battle with Rocco as she accused him of being physically abusive. She said the situation got so bad that it caused her to miscarry a child she was carrying in February with her then-boyfriend, a man named Jacob.

She and Jesse, whose last name has not been revealed to the public, began dating shortly after.
Rost starred in RHOP’s first season when it premiered in 2016. She took a break for seasons two and three and now makes appearances in the current fourth season.

Congrats to Katie and Jesse!

Kylie Jenner Unfollows Jordyn Woods On Instagram Amid James Harden Drama!
Despite reports that Kylie Jenner and Jordyn Woods have remained on good terms since the Tristan Thompson cheating scandal, things seem to be changing. The unfollow heard ’round the world happened after a video surfaced of Woods dancing with James Harden, ex-boyfriend of KhloΓ© Kardashian. Woods, for her part, still follows Jenner.
According to TMZ, Woods and Harden danced and hung out at a bar in Houston on Wednesday night. Some sources claim the meeting was purely a coincidence, and the two didn’t really interact. However, others insist that the two have been in contact with each other for months, even going before Woods attended the infamous party at Thompson’s house five months ago.

Jenner previously unfollowed Woods’s sister and mother on Instagram last month. Still, her comments on Keeping Up With the Kardashians and other reports seemed to show that Jenner held no ill will toward her former best friend.

“[Kylie] realized there were moments in her life that it was just her family and Jordyn [and] she had become codependent. … She has a great network she wasn’t seeing,” a source told Us Weekly last week. “She’ll always care about Jordyn and she only wants the best for her. She’s only sending positivity to Jordyn, but it’s too soon to say [if] they’ll be able to fully reconcile. But time heals a lot of wounds, and the Kardashian/Jenners are a forgiving family.”

During a conversation on their show, Jenner and Kardashian discussed the aftermath of the scandal on Jenner.

“She was my security blanket. She lived with me, we did everything together. I just felt like, ‘Oh, I have Jordyn, I don’t need anything else,’” she admitted. “I feel like there’s a part of me that needed to grow without her. And sometimes people are there for certain reasons and certain times of your life and not for others.”

Lil Nas X & Sony Hit With $25 Million Copyright Lawsuit
Lil Nas X will finally have his first taste of true celebrity status as the 20-year-old rapper and record label Sony have been hit with a $25 million lawsuit over an uncleared Bobby Caldwell sample.
Music publisher The Music Force alleges that Nas X and his producer allegedly used portions of Caldwell’s 1982 song of the same name, “Carry On,” for the rapper’s 2018 track. The music publishing company also alleges the two were “motivated by greed and malicious intent” as the original #YouTube video has gained over four million views.

The suit claims that X posted his song to various other social channels that appropriated aspects of Caldwell’s “Carry On” without explicit permission. Court documents also allege the original song was copyrighted in 1983.

The Music Force included Sony in the lawsuit due to their recent signing of the Georgia rapper. The Music Force reportedly believes Sony’s failure to clear the sample also makes them liable.
“Sony elected to take no action to stop this illegal, unauthorized infringement as it was far more important to Sony to preserve its opportunity to enjoy millions of dollars of revenues from the success of the career of X,” the lawsuit read.

The company is seeking $10 million in damages and an additional $15 million in punitive damages, as they claim Lil Nas’ appropriation has devalued Caldwell’s original.

There’s a reason Why Folks Aren't Here For Cynthia Erivo! That’s because she Has Shady Tweets Mocking Black Americans!
The 'Harriet' movie will be the bet on Blacks movie to drop this year. However, folks are sounding off about British actress Cynthia Erivo playing abolitionist Harriet Tubman, especially after some of Cynthia's old tweets shading African Americans
HARRIET is based on the story of iconic freedom fighter Harriet Tubman, her escape from slavery and her subsequent missions to free countless of slaves through the Underground Railroad in the face of growing pre-Civil War adversity. Harriet Tubman is played by 32-year-old actress Cynthia Erivo and she'll be starring alongside singer/actress Janelle Monae, "Hamilton's" Leslie Odom Jr., Vanessa Bell Calloway and more.

A most of you should know, Cynthia is British of Nigerian descent. Some folks aren't here for a British woman playing a role an American black woman could and maybe should play when it’s already hard enough for dark skinned American black women to get roles. Some feel it's culturally insensitive to have chosen a black British woman rather than an American descendant of slaves to play the iconic abolitionist. A #HarrietDeservesBetter hashtag was trending on social media where people have voiced loudly and clearly their issue with Erivo copping the role.

But recently disrespectful tweets about African Americans fired off by Erivo have also surfaced. Apparently, Erivo has tweeted out TONS of comments - meant to be funny, we think - about "ghetto Americans", she co-signed a comment about African Americans having no culture and she even mentioned black Americans have appropriated African culture.

Check out these shady tweets Erivo have posted in the past about black Americans:

WTF? African or British? Pick a side! It's said Cynthia Erivo has personally DM'd people to apologize. But folks want a public apology.

Your Thoughts?
