Jordan Peele for Rolling Stone - February 2019
As usual, Jordan Peele knows exactly where he’s going. “What we should do,” he says, with real enthusiasm, “is head to Hogwarts. Get some butterbeer. The Harry Potter ride is dope.” Peele has a movie he’s supposed to be editing, a burgeoning production company to run, an adorably talkative 17-month-old son waiting at home, but he’s slipped away from it all for a couple of hours on a Monday afternoon in early December with obnoxiously perfect West Coast weather. His assistant just dropped him off at Universal Studios Hollywood, a theme park that still thrills him, despite the fact that he is an actual, Oscar-winning filmmaker for the actual Universal Pictures, which is putting out his second film as a writer-director, the full-bore horror flick Us, on March 22nd, and released his life-changing, culture-shaking debut, Get Out, in 2017. “I might do a wand fitting today,” Peele muses, as a VIP escort brings us through security.
He has always been a world-class — a galaxy-class, a multiverse-class — pop-culture nerd, much to his creative advantage. (“He’s such a geek,” says Lupita Nyong’o, one of the stars of Us, who received a 10-film horror curriculum, from The Shining to the 2008 vampire movie Let the Right One In, before production began. “He’s extremely studied — he spent his life preparing to be this person for us.”) He also used to be “the world’s biggest weedhead,” his only real vice, but quit around the time he started dating his wife of two years, the comedian Chelsea Peretti — so it’s hard to blame him for taking his fun where he can find it these days. BREAKING NOW: IT’S OFFICIAL, Cory Booker Is Running For President In 2020!
New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker is the latest Democrat to enter the increasingly crowded race for the White House, making the initial announcement with a message of unity.
"We are better when we help each other," Booker says in a video message. "I believe that we can build a country where no one is forgotten, no one is left behind; where parents can put food on the table; where there are good paying jobs with good benefits in every neighborhood; where our criminal justice system keeps us safe, instead of shuffling more children into cages and coffins; where we see the faces of our leaders on television and feel pride, not shame."
The video sets the tone for a campaign that's expected to counter President Trump's divisive, base-focused politics with a conscious emphasis on big-picture themes of common purpose and love overcoming political divisions.
I’m running for president. Join me on this journey. https://t.co/fEDqOVIfwh pic.twitter.com/h1FTPUYRzo— Cory Booker (@CoryBooker) February 1, 2019
Booker's goal, he told NPR in 2017, is "not to meet hate with hate, but meet it with love. Not to meet darkness with darkness, but meet it with light. I really do think we're at a moral moment in our country. The only way we can move this country in the way it needs to go is not at pointing other people about what they're doing, but turning up the values we believe in."
Booker planned a series of media appearances as part of his rollout on Friday, including The Tom Joyner Morning Show, Univision's Despierta America and ABC's The View.
The 49-year-old Booker, a former Newark mayor who was first elected to the Senate in a 2013 special election, has long been seen as a likely candidate to challenge President Trump. He made it apparent he was likely to run with a couple of strategic moves, joining the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 2017, as well as making frequent trips to early primary voting states like Iowa and New Hampshire to raise money and campaign for local candidates in the 2018 midterm elections.
His trips left a positive impression with several political professionals in the early primary and caucus states. Jim Devers, who co-chaired Barack Obama's 2008 New Hampshire campaign, told NPR that Booker has "built his career on a message of unity. And I think that people all across the country are tired of how divided Americans have become."
Even before he was elected to the Senate, Booker had amassed a national following as Newark's mayor, primarily due to his early embrace of Twitter and other social media platforms.
He attracted attention to causes like homelessness and shortcomings of the federal food stamp program by going on hunger strikes and temporarily living in a tent, among other attention-grabbing moves. Booker also regularly interacted with constituents on Twitter. When someone tweeted that her elderly father needed help shoveling his driveway, Booker showed up to do it himself.
Booker has continued this approach in the Senate. During the height of the Republican push to repeal the Affordable Care Act, Booker drew attention to the debate by holding a sit-in on the steps of the Senate with other Democrats, and livestreaming the event for hours.
Those efforts have, at times, backfired. During the Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Brett Kavanaugh last fall, Booker dramatically threatened to release confidential documents from Kavanaugh's time in the Bush White House, even though, as he claimed, "the penalty comes with potential ousting from the Senate." Booker called it his "Spartacus moment," but the drama was significantly deflated when it became clear that the documents in question had already been approved for public release.
In the Senate, Booker has been a strong advocate of overhauling the criminal justice system. He was an original co-sponsor of the First Step Act, bipartisan legislation passed in December that addresses drug sentencing and rehabilitation for inmates leaving prison. He was also one of the first senators to call for legalizing marijuana.
Booker is an advocate of Medicare for all, raising the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour and a job guarantee program. He's also been a strong opponent of Trump's Cabinet appointments.
While his savvy on both social and traditional media earned him a high profile, Booker has also faced criticism from progressives for appearing too close to both Wall Street and pharmaceutical companies, a major industry in New Jersey.
And as a surrogate for the 2012 Obama campaign, Booker admonished Democratic criticism of GOP nominee Mitt Romney's business career, saying, "Stop attacking private equity."
In 2017, Booker told NPR that he stopped taking donations from the pharmaceutical industry, previously a prominent source of his campaign funds. In recent years he has co-sponsored a measure, along with Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., to legalize pharmaceutical imports from Canada, and has been increasingly more outspoken on high drug prices.
The New Jersey Democrat is the fourth senator to announce a run for president, joining Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Kamala Harris. Booker is the second black candidate in the increasingly large and diverse 2020 Democratic primary field. Booker and Harris have worked together on the Senate Judiciary Committee and have a close relationship, but are expected to compete for the support of African-American voters — a key constituency in a Democratic primary.
Good Luck to Him!
#RHoA: Reunited? Porsha Williams Promotes Nene Leakes' Comedy Show After Their Ugly Falling Out
Real Housewives of Atlanta star Porsha Williams is a supportive friend. Yesterday, January 30, the Bravo star encouraged her followers to attend fellow castmate Nene Leakes’ upcoming comedy show. However, Porsha’s seemingly gracious promotion had fans scratching their heads considering the two former friends had an ugly falling out only a few weeks ago.
Porsha posted the flyer for the event that boasts appearances from Nene, Sherri Shepherd, Loni Love, Adele Givens, and Janelle James. In the caption, she told fans where they could purchase tickets to the March show.
The mommy-to-be's show of support didn’t go unnoticed by RHOA fans. “Yass...So happy to see you and Nene in a good place,” one person wrote.
“You and @neneleakes are sisters again!!!” another excited user told her.
However not everyone was impressed by their apparent reunion. “Now [you’re] friends with the chick who blasted you on social media,” one disappointed fan reminded her.
At the end of last year, the 51-year-old Glee alum posted a picture of her and Porsha on Instagram. “When you a ride or die chick!!!!" she wrote in the caption at the time. "Hey lil sis, I got your back! Lil sis: yeah ok! Then throws big sis under the bus! What the F--K #loyalty #dontbitethehandthatfeedsyou I'm out #beloyaltosomebody."
In an equally shady move, Porsha “liked” the picture before firing back at her friend. "So you text me and ask me a question then make an assumption,” she wrote at the time. “Now you come on social media and blast me! B***h you got me twisted. #fakeashell #cutthecrap.
The drama started when Porsha confronted Kandi Burruss about a rumor regarding Porsha’s fiancé Dennis McKinley. However, Porsha accidentally revealed Nene was her inside source— hence the “throw[ing] big sis under the bus” comment.
So do you think Nene and Porsha have finally made up?
#Empire: Chicago Police Release Photos Of Persons Of Interest In ‘Empire’ Star Attack Also Smollett refused to turn his cellphone over to authorities!
CHICAGO (CNN) — Chicago police have released photos of people they’d like to talk to in the case involving “Empire” star Jussie Smollett, who was the victim of what police are investigating as a possible hate crime.
Investigators have located a surveillance camera that shows people who are now wanted for questioning, Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement on Twitter. Detectives had not yet found still images or video of the actual incident as of late Tuesday evening, police told CNN.
Smollett said he was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in a Chicago neighborhood known as Streeterville by two people who were “yelling out racial and homophobic slurs” and “poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim,” according to police.
Smollett reported that one of his attackers also put a rope around his neck, police said. Smollett told police both attackers fled the scene.
Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and was in “good condition” in the hours following, authorities said.
CNN’s Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.
He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.
“Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime,” police said in a statement Tuesday.
Investigators are testing the chemical Smollett said he was doused with and have yet to confirm the nature of the substance. Some reports said the substance was bleach.
According to local reporter, Rob Elgas, Smollett was seen on surveillance camera walking on the opposite side of the street at the two persons of interest. Elgas claims both Smollett and the unidentified people then walk off camera (on different cameras). Smollett is unaccounted for on camera for about 60 seconds. He then reappears on surveillance entering a condo building with what appears to be street salt on his sweater and the rope around his neck. Jussie arrives at a friend's place where police arrive to take a report.
We've confirmed with law enforcement sources that Smollett refused to turn his cellphone over to authorities after telling them he was on the phone with his manager during the incident.
As of late Tuesday, detectives had canvassed and reviewed hundreds of hours of video and expanded the search area along the Chicago riverfront hoping to find video to be able to release a public description of the offenders.
A dozen police detectives, with the assistance of the FBI, are working the case, the spokesperson said.
Smollett has starred on Fox’s “Empire” since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.
“Empire” creator Lee Daniels Face Timed with Smollett and published a photo on Twitter of the actor’s cut and bruised face. He later deleted the image.
In the aftermath of Smollett’s assault, his friends, colleagues and peers showed an outpouring of support for the actor, who is an active advocate for the LGBTQ community.
#NewMusic from Dawn Richard Releases New Album ‘new breed’
As promised, Dawn Richard aka DAWN releases her much-anticipated new studio album, ‘new breed.’
The project follows her critically acclaimed trilogy projects, Goldenheart (2013), Blackheart (2015), and Redemptionheart (2016), and is headed by the conversational first single, “jealousy,” and the title track.
“‘new breed’ is out now and it’s number 1. this is a love letter to my city new orleans to women who see themselves as kings, to brown girls who are constantly overlooked because they refused to be boxed in because of the color of their skin, to artists who don’t need genres to define them,” Dawn announced with the release on Instagram. “we got a number 1 album. God is real. And so are y’all. if you haven’t copped the album I really would appreciate the love for an artist doing all on her own. i love you.”
‘new breed’ features ten new songs from DAWN only as she continues to showcase her musical growth and eclectic beliefs. DAWN previously revealed that the project was inspired by her native New Orleans
“This album speaks to the new breed of woman who is saying, “Me too,” who is saying, “I’m queer,” the new breed of man who is saying, “I’m choosing to be gay even if I’ve been straight my whole life,” the new breed of woman who is saying, “I’m trans,” the new breed of woman who is being unapologetic and saying, “I want to run for president, I am able to run for president,” DAWN tells PAPER. “Every woman, Natives who are finally speaking out and choosing that they want their own reservations, the pipeline — everyone is standing up and saying, “We deserve better, we are more.” That is what this album encompasses, and I feel like New Orleans was always that to me. We never shied away from our culture. We are one of the few cities that still stay true to it. We don’t let people build, there’s some places where you can build, you have to keep the outside the way it is. You cannot touch the layers. We fight very hard for the preservation of that, no matter how much they try to gentrify it, and it’s gentrified. You can’t take that away from us, so I feel like that’s a little bit of tradition being brought into the new.

Ariana Grande has a Misspelled Japanese Tattoo, But Made It Worse trying to Correct It!
Ariana Grande made headlines this week for getting a tattoo in Japanese that was supposed to read “7 Rings,” but instead, was misspelled and instead said Japanese style BBQ grill.
Well, it looks like the 25-year-old entertainer attempted to fix the mistake by going back to her tattoo artist to add another character in…but it’s still misspelled.
Ariana posted a photo of ink with the new addition on her Instagram Story and wrote, “slightly better. thanks to my tutor for helping me fix … rip tiny charcoal grill. miss u man. i actually really liked u.”
However, a people were quick to point out the new mistake.
Now, apparently the tattoo reads, “Japanese BBQ finger ♡,” instead of “7 Rings ♡.”
Mariah Carey Draws Controversy at her Concert Crowd at Saudi Arabia
Mariah Carey showed up to her performance in Saudi Arabia, and even though many protested the singer’s trip to the Middle East, fans showed up to watch the diva rock the desert.
The “We Belong Together” singer was seen Thursday arriving in Saudi Arabia with her children and getting an escort through the airport.
Fans were also seen going through security at the event and making their way to the stage before Carey’s performance. The 48-year-old singer has caused outrage among women’s rights groups, who claim the concert is just a distraction from the human rights abuses carried out by the Saudi government.
Other critics claim the push for American entertainers in the Kingdom is also to take the heat away from the recent death of Saudi critic Jamal Khashoggi. Since Khashoggi’s death, many stars in Hollywood have faced criticism over their relationship with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Carey has a different outlook on the controversy, with her reps saying, “Presented with the offer to perform for an international and mixed gender audience in Saudi Arabia, Mariah accepted the opportunity as a positive step towards the dissolution of gender segregation.”

‘Flipping Out’ Star Jeff Lewis Splits With Longtime Partner Gage Edward
Jeff Lewis and his partner of 10 years, Gage Edward, have gone their separate ways.
The “Flipping Out” star announced the news on Thursday’s episode of his Sirius XM radio show, “Jeff Lewis Live,” also revealing Gage has moved out of their home.
“This has been a long time coming. We were in separate rooms a significant portion of last year, so it was kind of like a roommate situation,” Lewis explained, adding that Gage is now living in a hotel.
Revealing they tried making it work for the sake of their two-year-old daughter, Monroe, Lewis continues: “I think the reason we hadn’t ripped the Band-Aid off and separated is because A) we had the baby and neither one of us want to leave the baby and then B) financially, it wasn’t the best time because I have four properties right now — three of which are in construction and one of which is sellable.”
When asked by a caller regarding how they will handle custody, he responded, “I don’t even want to go there.” However, earlier in the show, he admitted, “I’m now a single dad ’cause the baby is with me.”
It’s interesting timing for the breakup considering the duo are currently fighting a legal battle with the surrogate who gave birth to Monroe.
The woman admits she agreed to be the surrogate and did consent to the filming of certain pre-birth moments, but alleges she never agreed to film in the delivery room.
She accused the producers of filming her vagina without permission and said Lewis and Gage humiliated her by making “disgusting” comments about her during the episode.
The surrogate sued seeking unspecified damages for invasion of privacy and fraud and claimed the comments made her suffer anguish, self-loathing and depression.
Lewis and Gage have denied every allegation of wrongdoing.
Political Rising Star Stacey Abrams Will be making a Super Bowl debut with a new Ad!
Days before she delivers the biggest speech of her political career, Stacey Abrams will have another super-sized moment during the most-watched television program of the year.
The Democrat’s voting rights group, Fair Fight Action, reserved airtime for a 30-second TV ad to run in Georgia during the Super Bowl. It features a bipartisan push for new elections laws that include updated voting machines and more resources for local officials.
It’s the latest step by Abrams to continue to elevate her profile after her narrow November defeat to Gov. Brian Kemp. The capper comes next week when she gives the Democratic response to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.
The ramp-up in political activity, which also includes the recent launch of a “thank you” tour, heightens the likelihood that Abrams will challenge U.S. Sen. David Perdue in 2020. She’s given herself a March deadline to decide and faces pressure from state and national figures to run.
Abrams appears in Sunday’s ad with Natalie Crawford, a Republican commissioner from Habersham County, the home of a contentious legal fight over a flawed legislative election. Both recite a list of voting measures meant to show common ground over voting changes.
“Every vote should be counted from every corner of the state,” Abrams said.
“We need hand-marked paper ballots, and our election officials to have the support that they need,” said Crawford.
Abrams then asks supporters to “join us in the fight for election reform” and take a selfie with the hashtag #FairElectionsNow.
“Because picturing fair elections,” she concludes, “is something we can all do.”
WATCH HERE
The ad will run during Sunday’s game, which is hosted in Atlanta, in the Albany, Columbus, Macon and Savannah markets. It will also be featured in digital advertisements in metro Atlanta and north Georgia. The overall cost is about $100,000.
Abrams put voting rights at the center of her campaign, and she refused to formally concede defeat to Kemp after an election clouded by concerns of voter suppression and his refusal to resign as secretary of state. Kemp said he was using existing laws to prevent voter fraud.
And her support for hand-marked paper ballots, a position she staked during the campaign, comes after a panel formed by Kemp recommended replacing the state’s outdated voting machines with a computerized system that prints paper ballots.
Crawford’s role was also meant to send a message. She lives in a portion of a deeply conservative northeast Georgia House district that’s at the center of one of the most bizarre – and closest – legislative contests in recent state history.
Republican Dan Gasaway is in court this week seeking a second new election after losing the first redo by just two votes, and he claims that dozens of people illegally voted in the makeup contest.
Abrams often cited the Gasaway case on the campaign trail as an example of how problems with the state’s elections procedures can cut across party lines. Kemp’s office earlier blamed Habersham officials for putting voters in wrong districts.
The ad marks the second time in two years a Georgia politician has used the Super Bowl as a super-charged platform for their message. Republican Clay Tippins made his TV debut in the race for governor last year during the big game.
Lil Wayne Sues Ex-Lawyer for $20 Million
According to TMZ reports, Lil Wayne is suing Ronald Sweeney — who repped him from 2005 through Sept. 2018 — because he says the attorney was charging some hefty fees. In the docs, obtained by TMZ, Wayne says Sweeney charged him 10 percent for every deal he helped close. The problem is … Wayne claims Sweeney failed to inform him the industry standard is a mere 5 percent.
That up-charge cost Wayne a bundle — he says Sweeney made $20 million during his tenure.
According to the docs, Sweeney got pretty greedy … proposing he get an additional 10 percent of all profits from Wayne’s label, Young Money — but Wayne says that was swiftly shot down.
Still, he says Sweeney even brought in outside help. In the suit, he says Sweeney hired another law firm to aid in the litigation with Cash Money over the ‘Carter V’ deal.
Wayne says that firm got 23 percent of the Cash Money settlement and 15 percent of the Universal Music Group settlement. Those numbers clearly stick in Wayne’s craw because he says all that was on top of Sweeney’s inflated 10 percent.
Weezy’s suing his former legal flak for at least $20 mil.
On Wednesday’s episode showed the group engaging in a new Head of Household competition after voting out Ryan Lochte. The houseguests were tasked with making it through a “Slaughter House” haunted house, which Joey Lawrence, Ricky Williams, Jones and Tom Green all seemed to excel in. Tamar — not so much.
The mother-of-one hilariously “noped” out of the competition deciding as soon as a man wielding a chainsaw entered the first room, that this competition just wasn’t one she wanted to participate in. She, therefore, didn’t complete the maze, and didn’t have a shot at winning HOH, which Green claimed with an impressive time of three minutes and seven seconds.
When it came to using his HOH powers, Green showed where his allegiances lie: with Kaelin, Natalie Eva Marie, Jones and new ally, Williams. After ET’s Kevin Frazier popped up with a new celebrity breaking news update — a “Power of the Publicist” advantage awarded the houseguest of fans’ choosing — he promptly put Burruss and Lawrence up on the block.
“When the celebrity breaking news happened, my gut told me it was one of you, so I’m putting you up for elimination to see if I’m right,” Green explained of the advantage, which could pull its owner off the chopping block.
However, it was Braxton who received the award, and will stick around for a bit longer. “I’m going to put it to good use. I love it so much,” she raved.
Celebrity Big Brother next airs Friday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
