Why would someone abuse Sammy The Cocker Spaniel?
Sammy the Cocker Spaniel whose owners dumped him in a garbage bag with fur so matted he could no longer walk
A dog who was dumped in a garbage bag is making a slowly recovery from his injuries and a serious case of malnutrition.
The Cocker Spaniel called Samurai, or Sammy for short, was handed in to the Associated Humane Society in Tinton Falls, New Jersey last week.
The dog took his first steps on Monday after being treated because his fur was so matted that the animal was unable to stand.
Sammy, who is around 13 years old, has also started to eat on his own after being fed by staff at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital.
A couple originally handed in the dog saying that they had found him in horrific condition by the side of the road.
However according to NJ.com, it was later found out that the pair were Sammy's owners for nine years.
Keith Morgan, 56, and Shauna Ewing Morgan, 43, from Brick, New Jersey, have been charged with animal cruelty.
They are due back in court on March 27 and face up to six months in jail or a $1,000 fine.
The veterinary hospital has had hundreds of calls from animal lovers around the world with many wanting to adopt Sammy.
Carers said that they would have to think carefully about who adopts the dog because of the level of attention he will need to nurse him back to health.
