The Hollywood profile has seen better days. Typically it's little more than a written commercial for an A-lister or rising star's personal brand. But sometimes, as with the new Beyoncé profile in GQ magazine, all pretense is dropped. The only way to get a global superstar like Bey now is through an opportunity to sell a new product to a specified target audience, in this case men between the ages of 30-45 who might be interested in her new whiskey brand.
While some might categorize this as "shameless" or even "unethical," the chance to nab a Beyoncé cover is too enticing for the current iteration of GQ to pass on, even if it means agreeing to conduct the interview not in person, or even on Zoom, but over email. To read this Q&A is to wonder who or what even constitutes the Beyoncé on the other side of the computer. Many of her responses could kindly be called wooden, or more accurately described as affectless, PR-officiated, post-human babble that at times feels indistinguishable from ChatGPT. For example, here are GQ's question in bold and then the answer from "Beyoncé":
This spring, you released a new album. And I have a lot of questions about that and how it connects to your past work. But first I want to start with the new, new thing. Whiskey. I guess I’m wondering…why liquor?

This is familiar stuff to anyone who's had to read a million press releases for celebrity-sponsored brand partnerships: lots of words linked in idea-shaped sentences which sometimes mean something, but often mean nothing. "I’ll never forget the first day I had whiskey. It spoke to me nice." I don't know what that means, but it sounds provocative. There's plenty of this kind of copywriterly ad-speak throughout:

There’s a huge contrast between the business journeys of men and women. Men often have the luxury of being perceived as the strategists, the brains behind their ventures. They’re given the space to focus on the product, the team, the business plan. Women, on the other hand, especially those in the limelight, are frequently pigeonholed into being the face of the brand or the marketing tool. It’s important to me to continue to take the same approach I have taken with my music and apply my learnings to my businesses.
I am here to change that old narrative. I’m here to focus on the quality. We took our time, and we did our research, and we have earned respect for our brand. I try to choose integrity over shortcuts. I’ve learned that true success isn’t about leaning on a name; it’s about crafting something genuine, something that can hold its own. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being revolutionary.

Cowboy Carter was the second album in a planned trilogy that you started two years ago with Renaissance. What sparked this grand idea to do a trilogy of records, each exploring different genres?
I started Cowboy Carter almost five years ago. Pay close attention to my age in the lyrics of “16 Carriages.”
From the start of my career and on every album, I have always mixed genres. Whether it is R&B, Dance, Country, Rap, Zydeco, Blues, Opera, Gospel, they have all influenced me in some way. I have favorite artists from every genre you could think about. I believe genres are traps that box us in and separate us. I’ve experienced this for 25 years in the music industry. Black artists, and other artists of color, have been creating and mastering multiple genres, since forever.
It's a testament to where we've gotten, both in celebrity and media, that the guaranteed success of Beyoncé on the cover of your magazine is more worthwhile than an in-depth and probing article. In an emailed format, each question more or less serves as a prompt for a semi-related essay. There's nothing any writer could ask Bey that would be new or intriguing, because she won't allow for that. But it's amusing that from GQ's perspective, a magazine cover—an honor that celebrities and their handlers used to fight for—can be dedicated to the shilling of a celebrity liquor business. Lest you think it's all robotic brand management, she did offer some "personal tastemaking":
What is currently inspiring you in music and film? What’s the best thing you’ve heard in 2024?
I love and respect all of the female singers-songwriters who are out right now.… Raye, Victoria Monét, Sasha Keable, Chloe x Halle, and Reneé Rapp. I love Doechii and GloRilla, and I just heard That Mexican OT, he’s from Houston…. R&B musician and native Philadelphian Frankie Beverly has passed away at the age of 77.
Music fans both here in Philadelphia and around the world have reason to mourn on Wednesday as legendary R&B artist, songwriter and producer, Frankie Beverly has died.
He was 77 years old. On Wednesday morning, Beverly's family announced the founder of the funk and soul band Maze -- who was born Howard Stanley Beverly -- passed away the day before.
"Grieving the loss of a loved one is a deeply personal and emotional experience. During this time, as we are navigating feelings of sorrow, reflection, and remembrance we kindly ask for privacy and understanding, allowing us the space to grieve in our own way," the family wrote in a message online. "This period for is one of healing, and your respect for our need for solitude is appreciated as we honor the memory of our beloved Howard Stanley Beverly known to the world as Frankie Beverly."
The family's statement continued to say that Beverly "lived his life with pure soul as one would say, and for us, no one did it better. He lived for his music, family and friends. Love one another as he would want that for us all."
Beverly was born in Philadelphia and attended Germantown High School in his youth.
According to NBC10's newsgathering partner, the Philadelphia Tribune, his musical career began when he founded the Blenders before moving on the record several songs with the Butlers.
"After catching the attention of legendary songwriter and producer Kenny Gamble, the group had several releases under Philly-based record label Cameo Parkway," wrote Tribune correspondent O.J. Spivey on Beverly's beginnings after the musician was recently honored by having the 6000 block of Norwood Street in Germantown named in his honor.
After moving to the west coast, Beverly's group changed their name Raw Soul and then to Maze, who Beverly went on to release nine gold albums with.
Earlier this year, after performing and touring for 50 years, Beverly played a farewell show at the Dell Music Center in North Philadelphia.
His family has not detailed Beverly's cause of death.

Nene Leakes is returning to the NBCUniversal mix as a Live From E!: Emmy After Party presenter.
The former Real Housewives of Atlanta (RHOA) and Bravo star will join Vanderpump Rules star Ariana Madix and E! News‘ Justin Sylvester to give their takes on the biggest moments and snubs from the Primetime Emmys.
Leakes, Madix, and Sylvester will go live on E! at 11 p.m. ET and 8 p.m. PT.
For the RHOA alum, her appearance on E! is a return to the NBCU family following her lawsuit against Bravo and Andy Cohen, in which she claimed a hostile and racist environment. Leakes dropped the lawsuit in August 2022.
The former RHOA star is one of the franchise’s most recognizable personalities, and amid the cast shakeup and Kenya Moore’s exit, fans have advocated for her return.
In August 2023, Leakes said she had no hard feelings against Cohen and was open to returning to RHOA.
“I don’t have any hard feelings,” Leakes said about Cohen in an interview on the Reality with the King podcast. “I’m a Sagittarius. So at some point, I may be mad with you, but then I get over it. I’m not the kind of girl that carries a grudge or hold[s] the grudge forever. I’m also not [an] ass kisser.”
She continued, “I hate that we’re in this place. I really wish it was a way for us to find our way back to each other because, you know, life is short and you just don’t want to carry ill feelings for the rest of your life. #MusicNews: Jennifer Hudson Announces First-Ever Christmas Album ‘The Gift of Love’
Holiday LP will feature Christmas classics, including a collaboration with Common on "Almost Christmas"
Christmas carols from one of the greatest voices in music? Sign us up! On Friday, Jennifer Hudson announced that she’ll be releasing her first-ever holiday album, The Gift of Love, on Oct. 18.
The project will feature renditions of Christmas classics such as “O Holy Night,” “Winter Wonderland,” “Little Drummer Boy,” and “Jingle Bells.” It’ll also include “Carol of the Bells” alongside South African five-piece the Joy and Common on “Almost Christmas.”
“I cannot wait for it to be yours!” Hudson wrote on Instagram with a video of her placing ornaments on a Christmas tree along with a snippet of her piano-backed “Jingle Bells” rendition.
OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder executive produced the project, while Kirk Franklin, David Foster, and Peer Astrom joined as producers. The album will feature a handful of holiday originals, co-written with the likes of Michael Pollack and J Kash.
“Our dream collaboration,” wrote the Joy on Instagram, sharing a photo with Hudson in the studio. “Literally Christmas came early this year @iamjhud invited us to be part of her magical holiday album.
You will love it as much as we love her.”
The Gift of Love will mark the talk show host’s first album since the soundtrack for Respect, in which she played Aretha Franklin in Respect in 2021. Her third studio album arrived in 2014 with JHUD. She dabbled with holiday music that year when she dropped “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).” Her last single release came last year with “All I Need” from The Color Purple.

The pop superstar managed to completely erase all buzz around the presidential debate Tuesday night by coming out in favor of the Democratic nominee. She shared a post on her Instagram, alongside a photo of herself with one of her cats.
“Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. If you haven’t already, now is a great time to do your research on the issues at hand and the stances these candidates take on the topics that matter to you the most,” Swift wrote.
She slammed Donald Trump for creating a weird A.I. version of the singer and making the fake Swift endorse Trump. The real Swift cited this moment as one of the reasons she decided to be “very transparent” about her voting plans.
“The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth,” she said.
“I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.”

Shanice Reveals She Underwent A Double Mastectomy Three Months Ago
R&B singer Shanice underwent a double mastectomy three months ago, and made the vulnerable confession to fans on Sunday (Sept. 8).
The “I Love Your Smile” singer, wife, and mother of two revealed that she had a “stage one one centimeter tumor in my breast” and thankfully caught it early. When she first had the procedure, she wasn’t ready to discuss it with the public, but is “strong enough” to be open now.

Miami-Dade Police Identify Officer Danny Torres in Controversial Traffic Stop with Tyreek Hill
Miami-Dade Police have identified Danny Torres, a 27-year veteran, as one of the officers involved in a controversial traffic stop with Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill. Torres remains on administrative duty as an investigation continues.
The altercation occurred near Hard Rock Stadium, where Hill was pulled over for speeding at 60 mph in a pedestrian area and not wearing a seat belt. Bodycam footage shows Hill raising his window after a tense exchange with officers. When Hill asked for his ticket and rolled up his window, officers escalated the situation. Torres and another officer forcibly removed Hill from his car, threw him to the ground, handcuffed him, and placed a knee on his back.
Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, who arrived at the scene, condemned the officers’ actions as “excessive force and abuse.” He also called for the officers to be fired during an appearance on “The Dan Le Batard Show.
“For me, personally, I believe the police officers that did that to Tyreek shouldn’t be in that position — they should be let go,” Rosenhaus said. “Look at the guy who kicked him — that guy should be fired. That’s out of control. The guy that jumped in and put him in a chokehold? There’s no place for a police officer to have a badge that operates like that, when Tyreek wasn’t being aggressive or violent or fighting back in any capacity.”
Hill’s attorney stated they are exploring legal options, arguing that Hill posed no threat. Meanwhile, Steadman Stahl, president of the South Florida Police Benevolent Association, defended the officers, stating Hill’s initial lack of cooperation justified their response for safety reasons.
The officer’s attorneys also called for immediate reinstatement, arguing that his actions were necessary and proportionate.

Family of man killed by DC Police want answers after body cam video is released
DC Police released body camera footage online Monday evening of officers shooting Justin Robinson near a McDonald's in Southeast D.C. earlier this month.
Robinson, 26, was killed on Sept. 1 just after 5:30 a.m., when police responded to a call for a minor crash with an injury in the drive-thru of a McDonald's in Southeast D.C.
Robinson's family originally said they did not want the video released after watching it.
Tralicia, Justin Robinson's sister, told WUSA9 they were hesitant to allow the video to be shown to the public because they had been told it would be redacted.
"We wanted to watch the video ourselves and then be able to tell our own story before the video was redacted," said Tralicia in an interview with WUSA9 Monday night.
"The only redactions in the videos are those that are required by law," said Chief Pamela Smith at a news conference shortly after the video was released Monday night.
She explained the redactions included blurring Justin Robinson's face, and the faces of some of the DC Fire and EMS members who were at the scene.
D.C. officials said over the weekend they were contacted by the family's attorney who said the family had changed their minds and wanted the video released.
The body-worn camera footage was released in two videos, along with a community briefing video that was posted on the Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department YouTube page. Both of the videos are just under 20 minutes long and show the point of view of two different officers.
The first video opens inside a patrol car and appears to have no sound for the first two minutes. The video shows the officer parking beside the McDonald's drive-thru lane, behind an ambulance. He looks into the car that appears to have crashed in the drive-thru and speaks into his radio saying, "Suspect has a firearm on his lap."
As more officers arrive, they use patrol cars to box the stopped vehicle. Eventually, armed officers surround the vehicle.
"The officers were clearing the area of any individuals or bystanders they were also using their police vehicle to box in the vehicle and were also attempting to come up with a plan on how to respond or engage when they were notified by the other officers that there was individual movement inside the car," said Chief Smith.
At 13:36 minutes, the body-worn camera video appears to show Robinson grabbing one of the officer's gun before officers began shooting at him. Robinson later died at the scene of the shooting.
The second video gives the view from another officer at the scene as well as the aftermath of the shooting.
"My first reaction was, that was poor tactics. That was my first reaction. Then shock. Then I was met with a little bit of anger and heartbreak," said Tralicia.
She told WUSA9 she didn't understand why the officers approached her brother with guns drawn since the call was initially for an unresponsive person who had crashed.
"Why was there no urgency to render aid to make sure this person was okay," said Tralicia.
She explained that her little brother had always wanted to be a community activist and became a violence interrupter for Cure the Streets.
"He always had a smile. If anyone ever see him and it's time to depart they'll say I love you and he'll say I love you more," she said.
She and the family's attorney questioned the officer's decisions.
"From my watching of the video. Mr. Robinson seems to be waking up. I think he's trying to push a gun away from his face," said Brandon Burrell, the family's attorney.
"He said I'll shoot you in your f---ing face. He was rolling the window down. Why did you place the gun in the window and tell him that? No aid was rendered if you thought that he was slowly waking up all of these things leading up to his death could have been prevented," added Tralicia.
The two officers who shot Robinson have been identified as officers Vasco Mateus and Bryan Gilchrist from the 7th District. Both officers are on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting.
