#MAGFAB: Joan Vassos is The Golden Bachelorette for Entertainment Weekly Mag

Joan Vassos — willowy, blonde, and 61 years young — is surrounded by 12 senior men who are getting ready to show some skin.
It's early afternoon on a hot Tuesday in July, and Joan is standing on stage at the Avalon Hollywood nightclub with a group of eligible suitors who hope to win her heart during the inaugural season of The Golden Bachelorette (premiering Sept. 18 on ABC). Right now, though, they'll have to compete for Joan's attention with a chiseled Chippendales dancer named RK. The shirtless Adonis, his pecs and abs glistening in the glare of the spotlight, is teaching the group some moves — and if the sounds coming from the stage are any indication, things are getting pretty steamy.

Okay, maybe sounds aren’t the best indication. While these gentlemen will be performing a Chippendales-style strip show for Joan later in the day, the current chorus of moans is the result of something not quite as sexy: Stretching exercises. "Ohhh," groans one man as he rotates his hips in a circle. "Ooof," another grunts as he attempts to limber up his hamstring. "Oh, man."
Once the guys are all warmed up, RK begins to demonstrate some signature exotic male dancer moves. There's the body roll ("Chest, midsection, pelvis, relax!"); "the shampoo" (both hands running through the hair, or in some cases here, the lack of it); and "rub the lotion" (gently caressing each pec as though applying Bengay to a sore muscle). The men watch intently and do their best to follow RK's instructions. One man in shorts and a golf shirt does a quick pelvic thrust, while another slides his hands sensually over his slightly convex belly.

Joan encourages the men from her spot on the stage, and even attempts a few body rolls herself. The mother of four (and grandma of two) isn't a habitué of male strip clubs, and she admits to having "mixed feelings" about her dates' activity. "I would be very uncomfortable going up there and dancing in front of people," she tells Entertainment Weekly. "And I want this to be a dignified process for people our age."

Still, Joan is looking forward to the guys' "Bare It All for Cancer" revue — primarily because it will raise money for Stand Up 2 Cancer, an organization close to her heart. In 2021, she lost her husband of 32 years, John, to the disease. "The fact that it's for a charity makes it all good for me. My husband died of pancreatic cancer, and many of the guys lost loved ones to cancer," says Joan. "I hope that they have fun with it because they're doing something really good, not just kind of salacious."

Dignity, kindness, and just the right amount of senior sex appeal... that's what viewers can expect from The Golden Bachelorette. After the runaway success of The Golden Bachelor — which was the highest-rated new reality series of 2023, averaging 9.92 million viewers weekly (across all platforms) — there was no doubt that ABC would follow it up with a female-led season. Alas, Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist's love story came to a rather abrupt end (more on that later), but fans continued to speculate about who would be the first grandma Bachelorette. Would it be sassy Susan Noles, 67, and her tasty (but toxic) meatballs? Singer-songwriter Faith Martin, 61, who got an "I love you" during hometown dates? Ellen Goltzer, the 72-year-old retired teacher with a dazzling smile? "Sexy Dancer" and heartbroken runner-up Leslie Fhima, 65? Or Joan Vassos, who had a very romantic one-on-one date with Gerry early on, only to decide in episode 3 that her daughter, a new mother struggling with postpartum depression, really, really needed her back at home?
Finally, on May 15, ABC crowned Joan as their first-ever rose queen.

#HipHopNews: Cardi B Snaps Back At Social Media User Accusing Her Of Skin Bleaching During Pregnancy
Cardi B may be pregnant with her third child, but she's not letting that slow her down or tolerating any foolishness. On Wednesday (Aug. 21), the New York rapper fired back at a social media critic who claimed she was bleaching her skin.
The comment came in response to a photo of the musician alongside her best friend, Star Brim. She responded, “Bleaching while pregnant?” along with three unamused face emojis.

Cardi B continued, “Why must y'all be so dumb? Actually, no! I’m pregnant, I’m slightly anemic, [and] this baby [is] sucking all the energy off my body to the point [that] I’m pale. [My] eyes [are] sunken, [my] veins [are] green [as f**k], [and I] can’t tan under the sun ‘cause I get hot super fast and dizzy. [Please] stop thinking with your a**hole!”

The forthcoming bundle of joy will be the newest addition to Cardi B's growing family. Kulture, her eldest daughter, was born in July 2018, while Wave, the soon-to-be middle child, arrived in September 2021. The “Bodak Yellow” rapper shares both children with Offset.

The news of Cardi B’s pregnancy arrived on the heels of reports of her getting divorced from Offset — again. It marked her second time filing, with the first being amid their near-split in 2020, which she called off two months later.
“With every ending comes a new beginning,” Cardi B announced on Aug. 1. She added, “I am so grateful to have shared this season with you. You have brought me more love, more life, and most of all, renewed my power! Reminded me that I can have it all! You’ve reminded me that I never have to choose between life, love and my passion!”

The Grammy Award winner’s sophomore album is still expected to drop in 2024. So far, she’s unleashed “Like What (Freestyle)” and “Enough (Miami).” At the time of reporting, neither of the two tracks are confirmed to appear on the LP.

Ashanti and Nelly Welcomed Their First Child Together!

We cannot spend too much time mourning the end of Bennifer when there is new life to be celebrated! Ashanti and Nelly have welcomed their first child together, a boy named Kareem Kenkaide Hayes. A rep for the couple confirmed the news to People, revealing that the baby was born a month ago on July 18.

Ashanti announced the news by way of postpartum-underwear spon, which I respect. The singer shared a photo of her postpartum body on Instagram and wrote, “Funny how life’s plans aren’t … always on time … lol. I’ve been waiting to be a mom for a long time now but nothing could prepare me for EVERYTHING motherhood brings!”

The arrival of Kareem is just the latest chapter for Ashanti and Nelly. The couple first got together 20 years ago and dated for a decade before splitting in 2014. They rekindled their romance in 2023, and by April of this year, they were engaged and expecting. The couple might even be legally married, but they haven’t confirmed that yet. What a difference a year makes!

Beyoncé Issues Cease-And-Desist Following Donald Trump’s Use Of “Freedom”!
Beyoncé has pursued legal action against Donald Trump over his unauthorized use of her song, “Freedom.”
On Tuesday (Aug. 20), Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign, shared a video of him exiting an aircraft with “Freedom” playing as the audio. Not only is the song the official anthem for Kamala Harris‘ presidential campaign, Trump also had no permission from the veteran musician or her team to use the song in any way.

Rolling Stone confirmed that a cease-and-desist from Parkwood and Columbia Records had been issued.

At the time of press, the video was still up on Cheung’s Twitter/X profile.
On Monday (Aug. 19), the Harris/Walz campaign shared a new ad soundtracked by an a cappella version of “Freedom.” Actor Jeffrey Wright narrated, “What kind of America do we want? One where we’re divided, angry, depressed? C’mon! We’re Americans! Fascism? We conquered it. The Moon? Landed on it. The future? Building it. Freedom? Nobody loves it more and we fight for it.”

With Bey’s blessing, Harris has been using “Freedom” since launching her presidential campaign earlier this summer after President Joe Biden opted out of re-election. During her first public appearance after gaining Biden’s endorsement, Harris walked out as “Freedom” played and it wasn’t long before it soundtracked her campaign videos.

Trump, on the other hand, has been known to use music at rallies and in videos without obtaining permission from the artists. Many including Adele, Rihanna, Prince, Pharrell, Isaac Hayes’ estate, and more have publicly expressed their disdain, issued a cease-and-desist, or sued Trump over the infringement.

Russell Simmons Defends Taraji P. Henson After She Visited Him
Russell Simmons has publicly defended actress Taraji P. Henson after she faced backlash for visiting him in Bali. The former music mogul, who has been accused of sexual assault by multiple women, took to social media to express his support for Henson and ask critics to stop attacking her for showing friendship.

Simmons shared a photo of himself and Henson during her visit, which sparked criticism from social media users. Many questioned why Henson, a beloved actress known for her roles in “The Color Purple” and “Empire,” would associate with Simmons given the allegations against him. In response, Simmons urged his detractors to leave Henson alone.
“Knock it off,” Simmons said in an Instagram Live video. “I love you, I just don’t want my friends attacked, and I wish you all the best. But just leave my friends alone. Don’t attack my friends for visiting me.”

Simmons, who has been living in Bali, also addressed the sexual assault allegations against him. He reiterated his innocence, pointing out that he has never been formally charged or questioned by law enforcement regarding these claims.
“Still today, I have never spoken to a policeman about anything,” Simmons stated. “I have never spoken to a judge, civil or criminal, about anything. From what I can tell, Joe Biden, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump all have more credible claims against them than I do.”

In addition to defending Henson, Simmons highlighted his contributions to the Black community and various social causes. He reminded his followers of his efforts to help thousands of Black men out of jail, his impact on the factory farming industry, and his role in registering Black voters.

“Black people, did you forget that I got 10,000 Black men out of jail?” Simmons asked. “And that I changed the factory farming industry forever? And that I registered more of you to vote than probably anybody you know?”
Simmons concluded by addressing rumors that he fled to Bali to avoid charges, announcing that he would soon return to the United States. “I’ll be in New York next week,” he said. “This idea that I’m hiding is stupid.”

Katherine Jackson Loses Court Battle Over Michael Jackson’s $600 Million Catalog

Katherine Jackson has lost the fight against Michael Jackson’s estate. The mother of the late pop icon, who died in 2009, had been embroiled in a legal dispute with his estate over his extensive and historic catalog.
A California appeals court has issued a final ruling that Michael Jackson’s estate can proceed with a $600 million sale of the singer’s catalog to Sony Music, rejecting objections from his mother that aimed to block the deal.

A month after the appeals court issued a tentative ruling against Katherine Jackson, the court finalized that decision on Wednesday – ruling that the estate’s executors (John Branca and John McClain) didn’t violate the terms of Michael’s will when they inked the gargantuan deal with Sony
“The will gave the executors broad powers of sale, with no exception for the specific assets at issue in this case,” the court wrote. “As such, [a lower judge] did not err in concluding that it was Michael’s intent to allow the executors to sell any estate assets, including those at issue in the proposed transaction.”
In the new 19-page opinion, the three-judge panel described the confidential deal as a transaction that involved “transferring a significant portion of the estate’s assets to a joint venture between the estate and a third party, in exchange for a large cash payment and an interest in the joint venture.”

Katherine opposed the deal on the grounds that it violated the terms of her son’s will, specifically a provision that says all of the estate’s assets must be distributed to the trust naming his children and mother as beneficiaries once probate closes.

In her appellate filings, Katherine argued that allowing the estate’s “single most valuable asset” to be transferred to a “new company” owned “only party by the estate” was fundamentally inconsistent with Michael’s wishes. She said the deal made it “impossible” for executors to transfer the “entire estate” to the trust. The appellate judges rejected that position
“Were the effect of the court’s order to ‘give’ an estate asset to a third party, we might agree that the order violates the will,” the three judges in California’s Second District Court of Appeal said. “But the proposed transaction is not a gift or distribution of estate assets — it is an asset sale, pursuant to which the estate receives a significant monetary payment and interest in a joint venture in exchange for the transfer of assets.” The judges said the deal “neither diminishes the estate’s value nor impairs the executors’ future ability to transfer the estate’s assets to the trust.”

According to an appellate brief previously filed by the executors, the asset sale was negotiated to take advantage of a market that was “by far” the “hottest it had ever been.” The deal, which closed amid Katherine’s appeal, lets the estate maintain “effective control over Michael’s music” while diversifying its range of assets, the filing reads.

Ne-Yo Hints He May Bring More Women Into His Polyamorous Relationship
Ne-Yo, real name Shaffer Smith, has previously confirmed his involvement with multiple women. When asked if he had a "cap" on the number of girlfriends he would add, he replied, "No specific cap. It just depends on who I vibe with and who vibes with me."

He elaborated, "I mean, as many as [I] can afford." Ne-Yo believes that individuals should be allowed to pursue romantic relationships in any way they see fit. He stated, "In the realm of love and romance, you should let people do whatever the hell they want to do. Can't see how it's hurting anybody."
When asked about singer Omarion's three-year celibacy, Ne-Yo praised him for his "spiritual decision." However, he expressed uncertainty about whether he could follow suit. He remarked, "Congrats to him. Don't know if I can do it, but congrats to him!"

Ne-Yo is set to embark on his "Champagne and Roses Tour" next month, kicking off in Melbourne, Australia, on September 26. Fans can expect a mix of classic hits and new songs.
Ne-Yo was previously married to Crystal Renay, with whom he shares three children. Their divorce was finalized in 2023. He is also the father of two children with ex Monyetta Shaw and two sons with media personality Sade Jenea Bagnerise.

Richard Simmons’ Cause of Death Determined to Be Accidental

New details have emerged in the death of legendary fitness guru Richard Simmons.
Police had responded to a call from Simmons’ housekeeper on the morning of July 13 — one day after his 76th birthday. Simmons was pronounced dead at the scene, and no foul play was suspected.
On Aug. 21, a spokesperson for the Simmons family told People.com that, per the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office, Simmons’ death has been determined to be accidental, stemming from complications due to recent falls and with heart disease a contributing factor.

The coroner’s office also reported that Simmons’ toxicology report was negative, other than medication he had been prescribed.
Simmons rose to fame in the 1970s after opening a series of gyms across Los Angeles. His popularity led to a pair of TV hosting gigs — Slim Cookin and the Emmy-winning Richard Simmons Show — as well as a slate of self-hosted fitness tapes released throughout the 1980s, all of which made him a certified pop culture icon.

He appeared as himself across dozens of television shows, including All My Children, Amazing Stories, Arrested Development, CHiPs, Evening Shade, Fame, General Hospital and The Larry Sanders Show. He guested on late-night programs such as Late Night With David Letterman, Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, and was a panelist on game shows Family Feud, The New Hollywood Squares and Super Password. He also lent his voice to several animated series, including Dinosaurs, Fish Hooks, Hercules, Johnny Bravo and Rocko’s Modern Life.

Simmons halted most public appearances in 2014, prompting false speculation that he was being held against his will. In 2017,  journalist Dan Taberski released a podcast titled Missing Richard Simmons where he investigated Simmons’ abrupt disappearance from the public eye and why the exercise instructor went MIA. Rumors continued to swirl, and in 2022, Simmons issued a statement to the New York Post saying he was “happy, healthy and living the life he has chosen.”

Tim Walz Accepts Democratic VP Nomination, Vows to ‘Turn the Page on Donald Trump’
*In a defining moment of his political career, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination for vice president at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Wednesday night. Introduced by his wife, Minnesota first lady Gwen Walz, through an emotional video narration, Tim Walz’s journey from Butte, Nebraska to the national political stage was highlighted with photos from his military service in the Army National Guard and his career as a public school teacher and Congress member.

“It’s the honor of my life to accept your nomination for vice president of the United States,” Walz declared, expressing gratitude to Vice President Kamala Harris for inviting him onto the ticket and acknowledging President Joe Biden for his “four years of strong, historic leadership.” The governor’s family, in attendance at the convention, watched emotionally as Walz took the stage.

During his 15-minute acceptance speech, the shortest by a vice-presidential nominee since at least 1984 according to NBC News, Walz passionately recounted his humble beginnings, professional achievements, and personal struggles. He emphasized his experience as a public school teacher, famously stating, “Never underestimate a public school teacher,” and shared the heart-wrenching journey he and his wife endured with infertility.

“This is personal for Gwen and me,” Walz said emotionally. “Even if you’ve never experienced the hell of infertility, I guarantee you know somebody who has.”

Walz used his speech to delineate the core values of the Democratic party, presenting a stark contrast to Republican ideologies. “When Republicans use that word [freedom], they mean that the government should be free to invade your doctor’s office, corporations free to pollute the air and water, banks free to take advantage of customers,” he asserted. He went on to say, “But when we Democrats talk about freedom, we mean your freedom to make a better life for yourself and the people you love. The freedom to make your own health care decisions. And, yeah, your kids’ freedom to go to school without worrying they’ll be shot dead in the halls.”

Addressing the controversial “Project 2025,” a blueprint for a potential second Trump administration proposed by the Heritage Foundation, Walz did not hold back. “Take Donald Trump and JD Vance,” he said, referring to Trump’s current running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio. “Their Project 2025 will make things much, much harder for people who are just trying to live their lives. They’ve spent a lot of time pretending they know nothing about it. But look, I coached high school football long enough, I promise you this — when somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they plan on using it.”

Walz concluded his speech by describing Project 2025 as “an agenda that serves nobody but the richest people and most extreme voices in our country.”

As Governor Walz stepped down from the stage amidst applause, his words left a lasting impression on the delegates and viewers at home, marking the beginning of what could be a pivotal chapter in the upcoming election. His nomination is expected to galvanize Democratic voters and sharpen the party’s focus on issues of personal liberty, education, and healthcare as they head into the 2024 election.

Byron Allen Faces Criticism for Late Payments to ABC, CBS, and NBC

*Byron Allen’s broadcast stations have reportedly been late in making payments to network owners, leading to friction with potential deal partners.
According to CNBC, Allen Media Group’s broadcast stations have been up to 90 days overdue on payments to major networks like ABC, CBS, and NBC, totaling tens of millions of dollars annually. The delays have frustrated the networks despite agreed-upon payment plans.
The reasons for the persistent lateness are unclear, and the company has faced recent layoffs, with more expected. Allen Media Group declined to comment on the specifics but highlighted its growth and status as a major Black-owned media company.

Per CNBC, “ABC, CBS and NBC have all grown increasingly frustrated after what feels like a perpetual chase for the fees — even after agreeing to payment plans at Allen’s request, the people familiar said,” the outlet writes.
Allen Media Group owns 27 ABC-NBC-CBS-FOX network affiliate broadcast television stations in 21 U.S. markets and twelve 24-hour HD television networks serving nearly 220 million subscribers. AMG also produces, distributes, and sells advertising for 71 television programs, making it one of the largest independent producers/distributors of first-run syndicated television programming for broadcast television stations.

Representatives for Allen Media Group said in a statement, “Mr. Allen started Allen Media Group 31 years ago from his dining room table. Allen Media Group is now one of the largest and fastest growing privately-held media companies in the world and is 100 percent Black-owned.
“Like most media companies and private equity firms, we evaluate many acquisition opportunities. In the last few years, the company has successfully completed well over $1 billion in acquisitions with the continued support of the capital markets. Allen Media Group remains strong, and we continue to prudently manage our partner relationships as we have always done over our 31-year history,” the statement said, per CNBC

Trump says he’d consider appointing RFK Jr. to role in administration

Donald Trump said Tuesday he would “certainly” be open to Robert F. Kennedy Jr. playing a role in his administration if the independent candidate drops out of the 2024 race and endorses the former president.
“I like him, and I respect him,” Trump told CNN’s Kristen Holmes in an interview after a campaign stop in Michigan.
“He’s a brilliant guy. He’s a very smart guy. I’ve known him for a very long time,” the Republican presidential nominee said. “I didn’t know he was thinking about getting out, but if he is thinking about getting out, certainly I’d be open to it.”
Trump’s comments came after Kennedy’s running mate, Nicole Shanahan, said on a podcast posted Tuesday that the Kennedy campaign is considering dropping out of the race and endorsing Trump. She described the decision as intended to reduce “the risk” that Vice President Kamala Harris defeats Trump.

Trump said he would “love that endorsement, because I’ve always liked” Kennedy.
Asked if he would consider appointing Kennedy to a role in his administration if he wins in November, Trump said he “probably would.”
“I like him a lot. I respect him a lot,” Trump said. “I probably would, if something like that would happen. He’s a very different kind of a guy — a very smart guy. And, yeah, I would be honored by that endorsement, certainly.”

The former president also downplayed the potential for backlash from Republicans for appointing Kennedy, who has taken a number of progressive positions.
“I like smart people, and Republicans like me,” Trump said.
In the interview, Trump acknowledged that the state of the 2024 race had changed since President Joe Biden dropped out of the race last month and Harris emerged as the Democratic nominee.

However, Trump insisted that his strategy and message have not changed.
“I’m leading in the polls, but not by as much,” he said. “But regardless of that, my whole thing doesn’t change. We don’t want crime. We want to have a strong military. We’ve got to stop drugs from coming in. We have to stop people from pouring into our country through an open border.”

The former president also responded to his former chief of staff and retired Marine Gen. John Kelly, who sharply criticized Trump’s recent comments that the Presidential Medal of Freedom that honors civilians was “much better” than the Medal of Honor given to service members.

“No president, member of Congress, judge or political appointee — and certainly no recipient of the Presidential Medal — will ever be asked to give life or limb to protect the Constitution. The two awards cannot be compared in any way. Not even close,” Kelly told CNN.

Trump described Kelly’s remarks as criticism from someone with “an ax to grind.”
He also lambasted Kelly for confirming to CNN last October previous reporting that had appeared in The Atlantic magazine about Trump disparaging service members. He said Kelly “was the one person that confirmed” a story the former president disputed.

“I didn’t respect him. Once I lost my respect for him, because I saw that he couldn’t do the job, I fired him,” Trump said. “And when you fire people, they tend to say negative things.”

Aaron Rodgers Says Rumors About His Sexuality Were 'Disrespectful' To LGBTQ Community
Aaron Rodgers is commenting on the need to address the rumors about his sexuality which circulated in 2013.
For those who might not know, the New York Jets quarterback revealed in a Milwaukee radio interview from over a decade ago that he felt pressured to address speculation about his sexuality during the early stages of his NFL career.

Over a decade later, Aaron Rodgers is once again speaking on that decision, elaborating on why he feels the situation is “disrespectful” to the LGBTQIA+ community.
The New York Jets quarterback made headlines in 2013 when he boldly declared he "really, really" liked women amid rumors about his dating life during his Green Bay Packers days.

Over a decade later, he is doubling down on the rumors, expressing why it bothered him so much.
“I think I was upset at the framing [of the rumor] because it was meant to shame the idea of being gay, and I have so many friends that are gay in the community,” the NFL star recently told author Ian O’Connor for his new biography, “Out of the Darkness: The Mystery of Aaron Rodgers,” which is out now.

"I'm like, 'Say anything you want about me, but do you understand these people are using this to shame the idea of being gay?'" he continued. "That's just disrespectful to all my friends who are in the community who don't believe that it's a choice. They were making it seem like you’re shaming people for being gay, when a lot of them, if you ask them, they didn’t ask for this life. 'This is who I am.'"
Aaron Rodgers has had a string of high-profile relationships throughout his career, including with Olivia Munn, Danica Patrick, and Shailene Woodley, whom he was engaged to until their split in 2022.

Earlier this year, a source told People Magazine that Rodgers began dating model and the daughter of one of the Milwaukee Bucks' primary owners, Mallory Edens, but it is unclear if the two are still together.
While it is unclear he if he is dating someone, Aaron Rodgers recently opened up about his journey of self-love, which he calls a “core tenet” of mental health.

The NFL star credits psychedelic ayahuasca for helping him achieve a deeper level of self-acceptance. According to Rodgers, this newfound self-love has made him a better player and person, both on and off the field.

"That's what ayahuasca did for me, was help me see how to unconditionally love myself. It's only in that unconditional self-love, that then I'm able to truly be able to unconditionally love others. And what better way to work on my mental health than to have an experience like that?" Rodgers said on the Aubrey Marcus Podcast, per People.
The NFL quarterback weighed in on training camp strategies, noting that there are “a lot of different schools of thought” on how intense to be when practicing.

"I would say the camp is much harder this year and maybe the hardest in the last seven or eight of my career," Rodgers told reporters, per ESPN, earlier this week before noting that he is impressed with how Jets coach Robert Saleh is tackling the season.

"Some of the older players are enjoying the -- to steal a coaching word -- the 'callus' part of training camp, where you're grinding," Rodgers continued. "Some people believe that, although it puts more strain on you in training camp, it actually gets you more ready to play when the season starts.
"And some people believe the opposite. You know how it goes: Whatever teams are having success, people kind of look at their schedule and go, 'Let's do that,'" the NFL player said.

Following his injury last year, which occurred just a few plays into his debut with the New York Jets, Aaron Rodgers says he is fully recovered and feels good about his current health.
"I feel good about where I am with my body and what I've put together," he said. "I feel like I've done different things throughout camp as far as the rollouts, roll out and pulling up, getting out of the pocket and making plays, going back across my body, pump-faking and extending plays and getting some yards. I feel like I've done a lot."

Offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett did note that Rodgers is "a little bit older, so he has lost a little bit of the speed he used to have."

Dwight Howard — Sexual Assault & Battery Lawsuit Against Ex-NBA Star Dismissed

The former NBA star was sued for sexual assault and battery by a man named Stephen Harper, whom he met on Instagram, in July 2023.
In an unexpected turn of events, Stephen Harper dropped his case against Dwight Howard on Monday (Aug. 19), per ESPN. He dismissed the complaint with prejudice, so he can’t file it again in the future.

Dwight Howard’s lawyer Justin Bailey asserted that Stephen Harper was not paid any amount of money to drop his case.
According to RadarOnline, the former NBA athlete has asked a judge to dismiss a lawsuit filed against him by Stephen Harper, whom he met on Instagram. Dwight Howard stated Harper‘s sexual assault accusations are “nothing more than a classic case of unrequited love,” stemming from the athlete’s decision to cut ties after one consensual encounter.

Dwight Howard‘s attorney wrote,

“While Howard remained cordial and responded to Mr. Harper’s text messages and calls sporadically at first, Mr. Harper continued to press for a relationship and Mr. Howard has no interest in such a relationship.”

Howard‘s lawsuit filing claimed Harper‘s anger and contacts increased to the point that the latter grew excessively upset and began making threats, even going so far as to suggest he would take matters to social media. Howard also said Harper vowed to tell the entire world about their one-night stand, including his mother and sisters.

The filing added,
“When these threats and several demands for money went unfulfilled, Mr. Harper filed the instant lawsuit as revenge and in an attempt to tarnish Mr. Howard’s reputation.”

Howard said he has text conversations showing Harper talking about enjoying their night together hours after it happened, adding that there is no doubt about whether the alleged assault was consensual. As a result, he sought that the entire case be dismissed before a trial could be held.

As previously reported, Harper sued Howard earlier this year for assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and false detention. The lawsuit said the two exchanged sexual emails for several weeks until Howard invited Harper to his Georgia home on July 19, 2021.
Harper said he and Howard walked into bedroom and began kissing before being interrupted by a man dressed as a woman who introduced themselves as “Kitty.” Harper said Howard forced him to perform a sexual act on him without his consent.

According to the lawsuit,
“[Howard] stood up (towering over Mr. Harper), grabbed Mr. Harper by the thighs, forcibly removed Mr. Harper’s underwear, held Mr. Harper down, and performed nonconsensual oral sex on Mr. Harper. Mr. Harper was in fear of imminent bodily harm when he was pinned down and forced to remain in place while [Howard] continued to sexually assault him.”

However, Howard rejected all allegations of assault, though he admits to having a consensual threesome with Harper and “Kitty.”
