#HipHopNews: The Hip Hop Universe Comes together to Highlight The Smithsonian's 'Anthology Of Hip Hop + Rap'!!
The landmark Smithsonian Anthology of Hip-Hop and Rap arrived on Friday (August 20), boasting 120 tracks, nine CDs, a 300-page book with 11 essays, extensive track-by-track liner notes and never-before-published images.
The beautiful foil-stamped book includes commentary from Public Enemy’s Chuck D, former Def Jam Recordings publicist and Hip Hop historian Bill Adler and journalist Adam Bradley, among many others. Photography from culture conservationists such as Janette Beckman, Joe Conzo and Martha Cooper and art direction from Def Jam’s first creative director Cey Adams further add to the book’s ironclad credibility.
In terms of the music, the Smithsonian Anthology of Hip Hop and Rap dives into four decades of Hip Hop — beginning with the 1979 Fatback track “King Tim III (Personality)” and Sugarhill Gang’s 1980 classic “Rapper’s Delight (7″ Single Version)” and culminating with Kanye West’s 2013 single “Blood on the Leaves” and Drake’s “Started From The Bottom.”
In between, unforgettable songs from Beastie Boys, Notorious B.I.G., 2Pac, Goodie Mob, Lauryn Hill, Public Enemy, Nas, Queen Latifah, Ice-T, MC Lyte and more tell a comprehensive story of Hip Hop’s journey from underground sensation to global phenomenon.
Produced by The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) and Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, the book is latest in the Smithsonian African American Legacy Series.
“Born in Bronx and raised across the American West and South, Hip Hop is one of the most influential genres of music in the modern era,” the Andrew W. Mellon Director of NMAAHC Kevin Young said in a press release. “Through beats, dynamic rhymes and pointed lyricism, Hip Hop has provided a platform for communities and generations to voice their ongoing struggles and has changed society and culture around the world.”

Jesse Jackson And Wife Remain Under Observation For COVID-19!
The Rev. Jesse Jackson, and his wife, Jacqueline, remained under doctors’ observation Sunday at a Chicago hospital and were “responding positively to treatments” for COVID-19, their son told The Associated Press.
The couple, married for nearly six decades, were admitted to Northwestern Memorial Hospital a day earlier. Physicians were “carefully monitoring their condition” because of their ages, Jonathan Jackson, one of the couple’s five children, said in a statement.
Jesse Jackson is 79, and Jacqueline is 77.
“Both are resting comfortably and are responding positively to their treatments,” Jonathan Jackson said. “My family appreciates all of the expressions of concern and prayers that have been offered on their behalf, and we will continue to offer our prayers for your family as well.”
Jesse Jackson, a Chicago civil rights leader, is vaccinated against the virus and received his first dose in January during a publicized event as he urged others to receive the inoculation as soon as possible. The vaccination status of his, wife, who is also an activist, was unclear. Family members said she has an unspecified underlying health condition that triggered concerns in recent days.
“We ask that you continue to pray for the full recovery of our parents. We will continue to update you on a regular basis,” Jonathan Jackson said.
Jesse Jackson, who has Parkinson’s disease, was hospitalized earlier this year for an unrelated gallbladder surgery.
A mentee of the Rev. Martin Luther King, he was crucial in guiding the modern civil rights movement on numerous issues, including voting rights. Despite his Parkinson’s diagnosis, Jackson has stayed active and continued travel, even during the pandemic.
In recent weeks he has been arrested for civil disobedience, including last month during a sit-in at the Phoenix office of Democratic U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who has faced pressure over her opposition to ending the filibuster to pass voting rights legislation.
A Northwestern spokesman did not have further information.
Billy Porter to direct queer teen comedy from Gabrielle Union's production company for Amazon Studios!
Gabrielle Union’s production company, I’ll Have Another, has sold a queer teen comedy film to Amazon Studios, tentatively titled To Be Real. Tony winner, previous Emmy winner, and current Emmy nominee Billy Porter is attached to direct the original script by Ryan Shiraki (On My Block) as a part of the deal.
The “edgy, laugh out loud comedy” has been described as an “LGBTQ Superbad crossed with Booksmart.” According to its logline, “To Be Real follows three queer friends who escape their hometown for Pride Weekend in New York City where they discover that life over the rainbow is an insane, raunchy, often divisive, but ultimately FIERCE non-stop party.”
Porter has spent the summer shooting his feature directorial debut, What If? for Orion Pictures. What If? is a queer coming-of-age drama, which focuses on “a high school senior posting on social media about his crush on Kelsa, a trans girl at his school, resulting in the internet encouraging him to pursue the relationship.” Porter is currently nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of Pray Tell in the final season of Netflix’s Pose, and will appear as the fairy godmother (Fab G) in Amazon’s forthcoming Cinderella adaptation.
Union will produce To Be Real, with Kian Gass, Porter, and Shiraki serving as executive producers. Other projects currently in development at Union’s I’ll Have Another include: Tamara Winfrey-Harris’ The Sisters Are Alright: Changing the Broken Narrative of Black Women In America, George M. Johnson’s All Boys Aren’t Blue, and a half-hour comedy called New Money for Showtime. The Bring It On star’s next film appearances will be in the romantic comedy The Perfect Find, and the Disney+ remake of Cheaper By The Dozen, where she will co-parent with Zach Braff.
Britney Spears’ Dogs Returned After Housekeeper Took Them
Britney Spears has her dogs back, according to a report. The “Toxic” singer’s dogs were removed from her home about two weeks ago, when a concerned housekeeper apparently believed they were sick and brought them to a vet.
One of the pups was allegedly close to death and both were dehydrated and seriously ill, TMZ reported.
Both dogs require a special diet, and one has serious digestive issues — so the housekeeper became concerned when she saw the pooches regularly fed table scraps, according to the site.
Upon taking a look at the animals, the vet became worried — and Spears’ dogsitter decided to keep caring for the canines instead of bringing them home.
But Britney was suspicious that her father, Jamie Spears, was trying to take the dogs amid their battle over the singer’s conservatorship, and accused the housekeeper of sending pictures of the ill pups to her dad. The housekeeper then claimed Britney struck her in the arm.
The pop star got her pooches back Friday, while the housekeeper is apparently no longer working for her, TMZ said.
Rachel Maddow Will stay at MSNBC, But Her Role Will Change!
Rachel Maddow is staying at MSNBC -- but not in the same role she has held for the past thirteen years.
Maddow has signed a new multi-year deal with MSNBC's parent NBCUniversal, as Insider's Claire Atkinson first reported on Sunday. Mark Shapiro of Endeavor, the talent agency that repped Maddow in the negotiation, told Atkinson that Maddow "is staying home where she belongs with a much broader deal at NBCUniversal and couldn't be happier."
The agreement means that she will continue to host "The Rachel Maddow Show" weeknights at 9pm ET for the time being. But that's not the long-term plan. The five-day-a-week show will come to an end sometime next year as Maddow shifts gears to more of a weekly format, according to two sources with knowledge of the deal.
Atkinson alluded to this on Sunday when she wrote, "Shapiro would not comment further and declined to say how much Maddow would be paid, saying only she would have more scheduling flexibility and will be expanding on her ideas." More "scheduling flexibility" is a key component of the new contract.
When I called other sources to discuss this info, I was told that nothing is set in stone, and "The Rachel Maddow Show" is not going anywhere. A source familiar with the matter said that "her schedule isn't changing." But others said that Maddow will pull back from her daily program at some point, which will allow her to concentrate on other productions.
"A much broader deal"
The key words in Shapiro's statement were "a much broader deal." Multiple sources confirmed that Maddow's new contract will entail developing new projects across NBCU. This sounds like a news business version of the entertainment showrunner deals that have proliferated across Hollywood.
And, critically, Maddow's agreement is not limited to news. NBCU's Focus Features is already working on a feature film version of "Bag Man," based on Maddow's podcast and book of the same name. Maddow has many more ideas for dramas and other projects. One source described this as an "Endeavor-sized deal," in a nod to Shapiro and Ari Emanuel's agency. And it's easy to see why it was a win-win: A production deal across NBC's businesses kept Maddow at MSNBC and made it easier to justify an eight-figure payday.
Here's how Ben Mullin described it for the WSJ: The deal expands the scope of her portfolio at NBCU, "giving her the freedom to pursue a range of formats including film and TV series, according to a person familiar with the matter. Ms. Maddow is starting her own production company that will bring its potential projects to NBCUniversal first." In other words, a first-look deal...
Maddow is the linchpin of MSNBC
She is the "bedrock of the channel's primetime lineup," as THR's Alex Weprin wrote. Just look at last month's cable news scoreboard. Maddow averaged 2.3 million viewers, making her MSNBC's most popular host by a mile. The host who follows her, Lawrence O'Donnell, averaged 1.5 million. Maddow defines the MSNBC brand more than any single host on CNN or, I'd even argue, Fox News.
With her contract coming up for renewal, Maddow was aware of several viable alternatives, and took a close look at them, as The Daily Beast reported earlier this month. But NBCU simply could not afford to lose her.
This is where "scheduling flexibility" came into play. Among Maddow's friends and associates, it's no secret that she has mixed feelings about the grind of a live nightly program. A regular presence on TV gives Maddow relevancy -- but also back pains. The Beast's story about her contract talks pointed out that she "has occasionally dropped hints about professional burnout." She told the NYT in 2019, "I'm realizing now -- 10, 11 years into this -- that it's fine to work long days. But it's not good for you to work incessant long days, five days a week, 50 weeks a year for 10 years."
She has vacation days, of course. But at some point, she is going to shift gears. That's the story behind the story of this mega-deal. And as Variety's Brian Steinberg wrote Sunday, "the network has no clear successor for her program."
About all this, an MSNBC spokesperson declined to comment.
Kanye West and Irina Shayk Officially Split!
It’s over! After originally being linked in June, Kanye West and Irina Shayk have since decided to go their separate ways.
“Kanye and Irina are over, but they never really started, there’s nothing going on there,” a source
The insider notes that Shayk, 35, realized that “they aren’t great romantic partners” and have since called it quits.
West, 44, and Shayk were first spotted together in May when photos published by the Daily Mail showed the twosome in France during the performer’s birthday. Us confirmed that the duo were dating in June, with a source adding that they have been “quietly seeing each other for a couple months.”
“Irina and Kanye have been spending time together and getting to know one another,” a second insider added. “He’s always thought she was beautiful and they’re both looking forward to seeing where this goes.”
The model and the musician, who previously worked together when Shayk appeared in West’s “Power” music video in 2010, had both received support from those close to them.
A source told Us that Bradley Cooper, who dated Shayk from 2015 to 2019, would be happy with whoever the model decided to have in her life.
“Bradley would be fully supportive of whoever Irina chooses to date — he just wants her to be happy,” the insider shared about the actor, 46, who shares daughter, Lea De Seine, 4, with the Russia native.
Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian was aware of the record producer’s new relationship following their split.
“Kim knew that Kanye and Irina were dating,” a source revealed at the time.
The reality star, 40, previously filed for divorce in February, citing “irreconcilable differences” as her reasoning for the split in paperwork obtained by Us. The exes share children North, 7, Saint, 5, Chicago, 3, and Psalm, 2.
For Kardashian, the way that Shayk acted during her split from Cooper solidified her opinion of the romance.
“Kim doesn’t mind because she saw how quiet and respectful Irina was after she broke up with Bradley,” the insider explained in June.
That same month, as things continued to heat up between West and Shayk, a source revealed that the twosome were “in a honeymoon, lovey-dovey phase” and were enjoying their time together.
Kanye West's Dating History: Amber Rose, Kim Kardashian and More
“They’re getting to know each other and having a lot of fun. It’s not serious yet, but they like each other a lot,” the insider added.
The following month, a source told Us that the duo were not “speaking quite as much anymore.”
“Irina does like Kanye, but isn’t ready for so many public appearances together all over the [world] for the coming months,” the insider noted in July. While Shayk focused on Paris Fashion Week, West was working on his Donda album and even moved into Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium later that month.
Amber Rose Further Airs Out More Dirt on ‘Narcissist’ Ex Alexander Edwards!
On Saturday, Amber Rose took to her Instagram Story to express her frustration with her former boyfriend Alexander “AE” Edwards cheating ways.
Rose, 37, posted a lengthy message to her Instagram stories, along with a meme depicting a man manipulating a woman.
“When ur in love with a narcissist,” the model began her post. “Ur brain tells you to run when ur heart says stay. Unanswered questions. Gaslighting. Stonewalling, Deflecting, Projecting.”
She added, “I wish it was easy for me to ‘fix him,’ but that’s not for me to do. The pain cuts so deep, especially when there are children involved.”
“I will always love him so much, but I know I can’t heal him,” Muva wrote. “Only he can do that. I knew I had to set myself free publicly or I would’ve stayed forever never receiving the love I craved and begged for. Tough choice because it hurts so bad, but I choose me.
“I didn’t want to have to do this at all, I just wanted my family MY HUSBAND,” Amber concluded the post. “There’s only so many times I can ask a man to just be transparent, honest and love me wholeheartedly. I don’t know if I’ll get the happy ending I wanted but maybe I’ll get the happy ending I deserve.”
Rose first called out AE, 33, for cheating on her in an Instagram Story posted on Wednesday. On Thursday, AE confirmed the infidelity and openly admitted to cheating on Rose with at least 12 different women throughout their relationship. While he claimed to love her, he maintained that’s who he is and that he will not change.
The two share a son, 22-month-old Slash Electric. Rose is also mom to 8-year-old Sebastian, whom she shares with ex Wiz Khalifa.

#BoxOfficeNews: ‘Free Guy’ Stays A Top Of The Box Office Adding $18.8 Million To Domestic Tally!
A charismatic Ryan Reynolds and good word-of-mouth helped Walt Disney’s “Free Guy” stay at the top of the box office.
The film added another $18.8 million domestically over the weekend, a 34% drop from its opening tally.
Known as the second-week hold by industry analysts, this figure indicates whether a film has staying power at the box office. For most films, a 50% to 60% drop is the norm.
“We don’t see 34% drops like this very often, particularly in the pandemic era,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.
In fact, “Free Guy” had the best hold from its first to second week of any film that opened with more than $10 million in ticket sales in the last year. In total, the film has secured $112 million globally since its release.
“It’s another great signal for what a crowd-pleasing film can achieve in theaters,” said Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at Boxoffice.com. “The conversation around this movie is sticking in a way that is wholly unique to the cinematic experience and distribution path.”
Much of the film’s box office success has been tied to its star, Reynolds, positive word-of-mouth and its theatrical-only release.
The film is a rarity in the current marketplace because it’s only available in cinemas and because it is an original concept. Most of the high-profile films that had a theatrical-only release — such as Universal’s “F9” and Paramount’s “A Quiet Place Part II” — are part of established film franchises, giving them a ready-made fan base.
Likewise, it’s been difficult with hybrid releases, like Warner Bros.′ “The Suicide Squad,” to determine if ticket sales were hurt because of the pandemic or because the film was available to stream at home.
″‘Free Guy’ offered proof that even in this unusual marketplace good old-fashioned word-of-mouth, and a very socially engaged Ryan Reynolds, can propel a theatrical exclusive film to solid second-weekend business,” Dergarabedian said.
Conservative Radio Host Phil Valentine Dies Of COVID-19, After Dismissing Vaccines!
Tennessee conservative radio host Phil Valentine, who voiced his skepticism over vaccines, has passed away from Covid-19 complications.
On Saturday, SuperTalk 99.7 WTN confirmed his death on social media. Valentine, 61, was diagnosed with COVID more than a month ago, Complex reported.
“We are extremely saddened to report that our host and friend Phil Valentine has passed away,” the station wrote. “Please keep the Valentine family in your thoughts and prayers.”
During his time as a radio host, he used that platform to question the efficacy of the coronavirus vaccines, even though he had contracted the virus in mid-July.
Following his diagnosis, he went on Facebook to reassure his followers that he still had no plans of getting vaccinated.
“Doing my patriotic duty for natural herd immunity.”
“I have COVID. Unfortunately for the haters out there, it looks like I’m going to make it,” he wrote in a July 11 post. “Interesting experience. I’ll have to fill you in when I come back on the air. I’m hoping that will be tomorrow, but I may take a day off just as a precaution. It’ll be a game time decision.”
His conditions worsened over the next few weeks, and he was eventually admitted into the critical care unit. His brother, Mark Valentine, made a statement on his family’s behalf, saying that his brother was indeed “suffering from COVID Pneumonia” and was listed in “very serious condition.”
“Phil would like for his listeners to know that while he has never been an ‘anti-vaxer’ he regrets not being more vehemently ‘Pro-Vaccine’, and looks forward to being able to more vigorously advocate that position as soon as he is back on the air, which we all hope will be soon,” the post read in part. “Phil & his family would like for all of you to know that he loves ya’ll and appreciates your concern, thoughts & prayers more than you will ever know. Please continue to pray for his recovery and PLEASE GO GET VACCINATED!”
Beyoncé, Jay-Z blasted over Basquiat painting in Tiffany & Co. Ad!
New York City’s preeminent power couple, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, are facing backlash online after appearing in a new Tiffany & Co. advertising campaign that features a never-before-seen painting by late NY artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Many critics are wondering how the anti-capitalist Basquiat would feel about having his work featured in a jewelry ad.
“Love is the diamond that the jewelry and art decorate,” the hip-hop paramours told People magazine of the controversial new advertisement, entitled “About Love,” which debuts globally on Sept. 2. It will reportedly appear across all digital billboards in Times Square.
The company said it chose to feature the Carters as their 13-year relationship epitomized the modern love story so essential to the brand.
The swanky images, shot in Los Angeles’ iconic Orum House, show Beyoncé, 39, rocking a chic black dress, mesh evening gloves and an updo hairstyle — a clear homage to Audrey Hepburn’s character in the 1961 rom-com “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” Encircling the singer’s neck is a massive, $30 million Tiffany yellow diamond necklace — a stone that Hepburn had famously worn while promoting the film.
Not to be outdone, Beyoncé’s other half, 51, sports a suit with Jean Schlumberger’s legendary Bird on a Rock brooch, here repurposed as a set of stylish cufflinks.
However, the gem-encrusted promo takes a seemingly paradoxical turn by featuring a painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat, a 1980s Neo-expressionist known for his graffiti-inspired paintings that focused on class dichotomies in America.
The artwork, entitled “Equals Pi,” was originally part of the Brooklyn-born artist’s private collection but was recently bought by Tiffany and Co., which didn’t unveil it to the public until now, Yahoo! Life reported.
According to People, Tiffany and Co. included the painting because art has been a “common thread throughout” the couple’s “love story” and the main Tiffany & Co. ad campaign.
The Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE (LVMH) subsidiary thought the painting’s cameo was fitting, as it came in their signature robin eggshell blue.
“We don’t have any literature that says he [Basquiat] made the painting for Tiffany,” Alexandre Arnault, Tiffany’s executive vice president of products and communications, told Yahoo! Life. However, the diamond boss surmised “that the [blue painting] is not by chance.
“The color is so specific that it has to be some kind of homage,” he insisted.
However, the artwork’s appearance in the advertising divided social media.
“Basquiat wasn’t the type of person or artist to approve of his pieces being used in an ad from multiple billionaires (uncontextualized, at that),” scoffed one detractor on Twitter. “His art was all about pain & beauty in low places, so, it comes across as a tone deaf & flippant flex on his legacy.”
“The fact that they showed off this never-before-seen piece of art from Jean-Michel Basquiat for an advertisement doesn’t sit well with my spirits…,” lamented another.
One incensed Tweeter accused Tiffany’s of hoarding the painting, writing, “Insane to me that rich people can just buy art from artists who have passed and no one else gets to see it, kinda gross imo like these pieces should be able to be seen by everyone, thats literally what basquiat woulda wanted.”
A few even ripped Jay-Z, a noted Basquiat fan and collector, for rocking the dead painter’s iconic lopsided pigtails in the advert.
“He wanna be basquiat so bad,” wrote one critic, while another tweeted, “Jay Z cosplaying as Basquiat is hilarious to me.”
However, many hip-hop stalwarts flocked to the Carters’ defense, with one fuming, “Now everyone is suddenly a Basquiat enthusiast? ‘He wouldn’t want this’ did he tell you this via oujia board?”
Others argued that, despite his seemingly proletarian-leaning paintings, Basquiat was a big fan of luxury goods.
“We know a little bit about Basquiat,” said Arnault. “We know his family. We did an exhibition of his work at the Louis Vuitton Foundation a few years back. We know he loved New York, and that he loved luxury and he loved jewelry.”
As part of a partnership with the Carters, Tiffany and Co. has pledged to donate $2 million to scholarship and internship programs for historically black colleges and universities.
Wendy Williams posts pic with new ‘boyfriend’ on Instagram!
Wendy Williams has a new man. The irrepressible talk show icon posted a pic on Instagram Saturday night that backdoor-introduced followers to a man she referred to as her boyfriend.
“My son’s 21st birthday party on the yacht in #Miami was everything he wanted,” Williams wrote, adding, “Even my boyfriend.”
Williams, 57, included a shot of her and the man in question in her car, though it’s hard to identify anything about the gentleman beyond the fact that he seems to be a middle-aged white man wearing a gray T-shirt.
Williams’ last relationship — with Maryland contractor Mike Esterman — didn’t exactly end amicably. While the pair seemed to agree that the problems posed by the distance between them and their respective schedules were too great to surmount, things deteriorated in the wake of the split.
“I didn’t say anything [publicly about it] because I’m that grown,” Williams said on her show in May after Esterman talked to Page Six about the breakup. “We would’ve had this discussion way behind the scenes. I am not embarrassed because I’m that grown. But since childish ones — Mike — well, he’s giving quotes!”
Esterman said he wasn’t surprised by Williams’ reaction, telling us, “Of course she has to have the last word, and because she is the kind of person that she is; she’s the only thing that will make herself look best.”
Williams’ professional life has been more in the spotlight post-Esterman: She pronounced “death” on Jamie and Lynne Spears after Britney’s testimony in her conservatorship case in June, told Cynthia Williams she should be fired from “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” days later, and then in July, was slammed for a segment on the death of TikToker Swavy.
R. Kelly's Physician Says He Knowingly Infected People With Herpes Since 2007!
The trial for R. Kelly has begun, and many are gearing up to testify against the singer. Now, the singer’s personal physician for the last 25 years testified on the stand in relation to Kelly’s case of herpes which he reportedly treated since 2007. This comes after prosecutors allege that the singer infected numerous people with the STD, knowing he had it.
Chicago-based physician Kris McGrath appeared in court under subpoena, and noted that he has been treating Kelly since 1994. The physician went on to say he suspected the singer had herpes since June 200, but lab tests came back negative. However, the physician said that Kelly and his associates would call him for refills of genital herpes medicine Valtrex, saying, “It was so often that I had memorized the number” to a local Walgreens.
Reports noted the earliest documentation of the physician prescribing Valtrex was March 2007 based on medical records presented in court by prosecutors. Along with that, the doctor noted that Kelly never paid him for his medical services. Stay tuned for updates.
Man Punches Husband After Wife Slaps Him at Steelers Game!
The NFL may have a growing problem on its hands.
One week after a bloody brawl among fans at a Rams-Chargers game in Los Angeles, video of another fight at the Lions-Steelers game went viral Saturday night.
A woman was shown arguing with a man in front of her at Heinz Field, before slapping him in the face to spark a wild fight in which she and another man were struck.
During the argument, the woman can be heard yelling “Get the f—k out,” and apparently makes contact with the man. He replies, “Don’t touch me,” and pushes her hand away, prompting the slap.
A man seated next to the woman intervenes, and both are punched by the man who’d been slapped in the ensuing fisticuffs. Other fans eventually broke up the fight, which lasted nearly 30 seconds.
