The Daily Buzz For Nov 9 ☕πŸ“°☕

Rami Malek for The Advocate - December 2018/January 2019!
“Bohemian Rhapsody” star Rami Malek covers the December 2018/January 2019 issue of The Advocate magazine photographed by Aingeru Zorita.

“What I find very revolutionary about him [Freddie Mercury] is he refused to ever be defined…or be categorized or be put into a box. He was a performer and he wanted to make music and share that music and have that relationship with an audience. There was this ability he had and a desire to connect with everyone in the audience, and not the people just at the front of the stage. You see him when he’s performing — he rarely looks down at the first few rows. He’s reaching out to everyone in that audience. And I think that was his statement. That was his great ability as a human being, is to create this sense of unity. That is one way, I think, I don’t know, that’s one thing I find so satisfying about this story.”
“I was cognizant of every aspect of how we were approaching that part of the story, [Mercury’s gay life]” says Malek. “That aspect of that part of Freddie’s life with Paul Prenter feels true to life, so it’s another moment where the decision to go there felt like it was coming from an accurate place. But I do wholeheartedly understand exactly what you’re saying.
Those were decisions that were out of my control. I pushed as hard as I could to make sure we saw Freddie in a loving relationship with Jim and the evolution of that relationship. It’s the time construct of when Jim and Freddie actually met … it was around that period of Live Aid so that, unfortunately, you don’t get to see the actual love life with Jim Hutton,” because the movie concludes shortly after the concert.

#RHoA: Nene Leakes Mocked for Looking Like Kim Zolciak In New Photo!
Nene Leakes and Cynthia Bailey geared up to visit CBS’s “The Talk” Tuesday and as they did, “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” stars made time to snap a quick photo together. But while fans praised Bailey’s look, they tore into Leakes’ for her’s.

“Ms Bailey you are a goddess and you are just as beautiful on the inside. And then there’s Nene. *side eye*”
“Child #neneleakes out here looking like #Melbamoore #youshouldakeptyourrealface #offtoseethewizard #todowearenotinkansasanymore lookin selfπŸ˜©πŸ˜‚ But you #richb—- so I’ll just giggle from afar.”

“Nene is slowly looking like Kim🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣
“Omg nene looks horrible geez what happen is she ok?”
“I almost thought Nene was Shawn or marlon W. in white chicks!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
“Cynthia. U look amazing! Can’t say the same for your backstabbing so-called friend… She seems to be trying to look like Kim Z.”
But wasn’t all negative for Leakes. Some praised her and the model equally.

“@cynthiabailey10 Simply beautiful the both of you @neneleakes
“Y’all cuteeeeee ️πŸ–€
“Gorg!!!! Loving these looks ladies ️”

“2 beautiful blonde bombshells and it just so happens that you are also 2 of my 3 favorite housewives @cynthiabailey10 and @neneleakes (shout out to my other girl @kandi πŸ˜). Omg I’m SO GLAD you ladies are back! I’ve been having #rhoa withdrawal! Also keeping Gregg and the Leakes family in my prayers. πŸ™πŸΎπŸ’œ u ladies!”

“Freaking flawless @cynthiabailey10 @neneleakes.”
Leakes has battled countless accusations about her appearance over the years, especially those concerning rumors about bleaching her skin.

On an Instagram photo Leakes uploaded in July, she caught the attention of a fan wondering if she manipulated her skin tone.
“Love blonde hair on NeNe but her skin is remarkably lighter than when she first appeared on TV. What is it about brown women becoming famous that makes them bleach their skin??? Her, Tamar, and others seem to be okay with being Black as long as they are light enough…has America convinced us dark Black women cannot be successful???”

“@darraghgrier you need help! I’ll be praying for you because your eyes ain’t working fo ya,” Leakes fired back.

#ThousandOaks Shooting: 13, including an officer, killed at Borderline Bar & Grill
As the sun rose on Nov. 8, 2018, the world's eyes were on Thousand Oaks as the site of the latest U.S. mass shooting. Steve Byerly, Ventura County Star
A gunman killed 12 people, including a sheriff's sergeant, at a Thousand Oaks bar late Wednesday before apparently turning the gun on himself.

The gunman was identified as Ian David Long, 28, of Newbury Park. The Ventura County Sheriff's Office said he'd had past encounters with authorities, including being involved in a minor traffic collision and being a battery victim at a bar. Sheriff Geoff Dean said the gunman used a Glock 21 .45-caliber handgun.
Dean said the gun was purchased legally but had a high-capacity magazine. It was not immediately clear if the magazine had been purchased before the ban.

Authorities got a report at about 11:20 p.m. that a man had opened fire at the Borderline Bar & Grill, a country-western dance bar at 99 Rolling Oaks Drive. Officers at the scene said the gunman might have used smoke bombs in the incident, but authorities later said they could not confirm that.

Officers indicated that approximately 30 shots had been fired and that victims were fleeing from the bar into the surrounding neighborhood.

Among the first officers at the scene were sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus and a California Highway Patrol officer, according to Dean. Dean said Helus was stuck multiple times by bullets.
Helus died later at Los Robles Regional Medical Center, a choked-up Dean said at a news conference early Thursday.
Late Thursday morning Jason Coffman said his son Cody Coffman was one of those killed Wednesday. He said he talked to his son, a former Camarillo High School football player, just before he went to the bar.
“I talked to him last night before he headed out the door,” Jason Coffman said. “The first thing I said to him was, ‘Don’t drink and drive.’ The last thing I said was, ‘Son I love you.’ That was the last thing I said.”
Jason Coffman had been at a reunification spot set up for families at the Thousand Oaks Teen Center since before 5 Thursday morning. Cody had just turned 22 and was on his way to “fulfilling his dream” of joining the Army.
“There are so many people that he touched and now they are going to be just as heartbroken as I am,” Jason Coffman said.

Coffman was held up as he spoke to reporters by his father-in-law Mike Johnston.

“I just want to pray for everyone else who is in this situation,” Coffman said as he choked up. “There are many more to come.”

California Lutheran University later identified a recent graduate, Justin Meek, as another victim. "The Cal Lutheran community is filled with sorrow over the violent events that took place last night a few miles from campus in Thousand Oaks. Sadly, we have learned from the family that a recent graduate, Justin Meek, 23, is one of the precious lives cut short in this tragedy. Meek heroically saved lives in the incident," said CLU President Chris Kimball in a written statement.
Justin and his mother, Laura Lynn Meek, both received bachelor's degrees from CLU in May.

Pepperdine University said several students of the Malibu school were at Borderline during the shooting and one of them, Alaina Housley, was among those who died.
"Our hearts are broken with the news of this profound loss. We offer our deepest condolences to the Housley family and ask that our community join us in keeping Alaina’s family, friends, and loved ones in their prayers during this incredibly difficult time," the university said in a statement.

Dean said Long, who served in the Marines, had interactions with police including one in April at his Newbury Park home. Deputies were called on a report of subject disturbing, the sheriff said.
Dozens more officers were called to the scene, and the gunman was dead when they arrived. Dean said he didn't know how the gunman died.
Officers began escorting large groups of people to safety as they left the area.

Officers were also entering the bar and finding people who had hidden in out-of-the-way areas. People took shelter in restrooms and even crawl spaces in the attic, among other places, according to officers at the scene.
Matt Wennerstrom, 20, of Newbury Park explains what it was like to be in Borderline Bar and Grill tonight when a gunman opened fire.
Besides those killed by the gunman, at least 10 to 12 people inside the bar suffered injuries, Dean said. He described many of those injuries as minor.

Some witnesses interviewed by TV news networks indicated that the gunman shot an employee at the door.
Eighteen people reportedly transported themselves to various local hospitals, and two were transported by ambulance, according to the Ventura County Sheriff's Office.

A family reunification center was set up at 1375 E. Janss Road in Thousand Oaks, and a victim information hotline was established at 805-465-6650.
Thursday classes at California Lutheran University have been canceled. Conejo Valley Unified schools and Moorpark College will be open, however.
"We all share the grief at the events of last evening that have affected all of us," Kimball said in a written statement announcing the cancellation of classes.

He said the campus and Samuelson Chapel would be open and counseling and other help would be available for students and staff. A hotline was set up at 877-715-2440.

Howard Wennes, a former CLU president and retired pastor, came to the chapel to offer comfort Wednesday morning.

“People are accumulating today and will be all day today to remember yes, we’re in chaos but we have a history of trusting that somehow the spirit working through us will somehow get us through,” Wennes said.
He said there are many counselors and chaplains on campus today.
“You don’t have to be alone,” he said.

A rosary was planned at 6 p.m. and another evening service at 7:30 in the chapel.

Our Thoughts and Prayers are with all the Families!

Spike Lee To Direct Film Adaptation of Roger Guenveur Smith’s One-Man-Stage Show “Frederick Douglass Now”
Spike Lee is once again bringing a one-man stage show by Roger Guenveur Smith to the big screen, this time, to tell the story of the late social reformer, abolitionist, orator and writer, Frederick Douglass.

In the latest collaboration between Lee and Smith, whose relationship expands through three decades, the legendary director is set to direct the movie adaptation of Smith’s “Frederick Douglass Now,” highlighting the life and accomplishments of “one of the most extraordinary figures in U.S. History.”
According to Variety, the film is set to be produced by Buffalo 8, who worked with Luna Ray Media to produce Lee’s movie adaptation of Smith’s “Rodney King” one-man show.

In ”Frederick Douglass Now”, which is set in a spoken word format, Smith begins rapping a ”mashup of references to slavery and contemporary life in the U.S., ” before he continues with excerpts of Douglass’ essays and letters, and ends the piece with his own writing, “If there is no progress, Frederick Douglass is still alive.”

For Lee’s movie adaptation, according to the publication, jazz artist Branford Marsalis will play the film, alongside Smith’s longtime collaborator and composer for “Rodney King and “A Huey P. Newton Story,” Marc Anthony Thompson.

Would you purchase a jacket that has the ‘F’ Bomb all over it? Well Diesel selling it for $450!
The fashion brand Diesel is selling a jacket that has the word “faggot” written all over it.

For $450, you can buy a jacket made from “shiny technical satin” that has hate speech all over it.
The jacket is part of Diesel’s “Ha(u)te Couture” line, which includes several garments with negative comments about Diesel written on them, like “Diesel is dead” and “Not cool anymore.”
Other than two women’s T-shirts that say “Slut,” the “Faggot” jacket is the only garment in the Ha(u)te Couture collection that has actual hate speech.

The other 76 products just show negative comments about Diesel itself or vague insults like “The bad guy.”

So how did Diesel get here, using hate speech to sell clothes?
The Ha(u)te Couture collection is part of an ad campaign that featured a few celebrities, like Nicki Minaj and Tommy Dorfman from 13 Reasons Why.
In an ad, Dorfman, who is gay, wore the “faggot” jacket.
The collection’s tagline is “The more hate you wear, the less you care.”

“I don’t think Diesel gets to ‘reclaim’ this term for our community,” author Phil Stamper said. “It’s still pretty divisive, and brings up a lot of trauma for queer people.”
In a statement, Diesel said: “Every individual cast within the campaign relates personally to the issue itself. To bring awareness to the wider issue, each chose a phrase that they wanted to wear proudly with the goal of empowering others to take a stance. Together, Diesel and Tommy Dorfman use this as a platform to disempower the haters and show the more hate you wear, the less you care.”

But the fact that “Faggot” appears in a collection that’s almost entirely about negative internet comments goes to show that they don’t really take homophobia and hate speech seriously already.

Maybe they should try caring more, not less?

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg suffers 3 fractured ribs from fall
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg suffered three fractured ribs Wednesday evening after falling in her office at the court.
Ginsburg, 85, was treated at George Washington University Hospital early Thursday morning and admitted for observation and treatment.
Ginsburg is one of four liberal-leaning judges, including Justices Stephen G. Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan. With the recent addition of Justice Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump's embattled Supreme Court pick who faced sexual assault allegations during his nomination process, they are the minority on the court.

She was one of nine women in her class at Harvard Law School, the first woman to be a tenured professor at Columbia University Law School and the co-founder of the Women's Rights Project at the ACLU, a group she started in order to fight for equal treatment for both genders.

"The Project was so integral in establishing the principle of equal rights," said Mary Heen, who worked at the Women's Rights Project in the 1980s, in a tribute to the group by the ACLU.

Leading this project, Ginsburg successfully argued six landmark cases before the Supreme Court. In 1980, she was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and in 1993, she was nominated by former President Bill Clinton to the Supreme Court.

She became the second woman to ever serve on the highest court in the land.
Ginsburg has yet to miss a day of oral arguments, according to the law project Oyez from Cornell University and Chicago-Kent College of Law -- not while undergoing chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer, recovering from surgery for colon cancer, or the day after her husband died in 2010.
It's also not the first time Ginsburg has endured a rib injury. She broke two ribs in June of 2012, when Ginsburg was 79, but continued to work after the incident.

The next date the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments is Nov. 26.

Rib fractures, a common but painful injury in the elderly community, generally heal in approximately eight to 10 weeks, according to Dr. David Forsh, the chief of orthopedic trauma for the Mount Sinai Health System in New York.
The injury can make it difficult to breathe, and can potentially lead to further complications like a collapsed lung or an increased risk of pneumonia, said Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency physician at Lenox Hill Hospital, which is also in New York City.

Treatment usually involves pain medication and keeping a watchful eye over symptoms.

Meg Ryan Just Confirmed Her Engagement to John Mellencamp
Meg Ryan is ready to say "I do." That's right, the "Sleepless In Seattle" star and musician John Mellencamp are engaged, news the actress herself confirmed with a beautifully bizarre drawing of the two on her Instagram page Thursday morning.
Talk of an engagement began after Ryan was spotted wearing a new sparkler on her ring finger on Wednesday in NYC

The couple has been dating on and off since 2010, splitting in 2014 before rekindling their romance in 2017. Mellencamp dated Christie Brinkley while they were separated.
This will be the second marriage for Ryan, who was married to Dennis Quaid from 1991–2001. They share son Jack.
As for Mellencamp, it'll be his fourth time down the aisle. He was previously married to Priscilla Esterline from 1970-1981, Victoria Granucci from 1981-1989 and Elaine Irwin from 1992-2011.

The news also means "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Teddi Mellencamp-Arroyave is about to get herself a new stepmom -- congrats!
