2014 FIFA WORLD CUP: United States downs Ghana 2-1 in World Cup thanks to Brooks' goal
Substitute John Brooks' headed goal four minutes from time gave the United States a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ghana in a Group G opening round World Cup match on Monday.
Brooks scored from a corner kick just four minutes after Andre Ayew of Ghana equalized by giving Ghana the goal that had eluded its grasp much of the night.
Clint Dempsey had given the United States a 1-0 lead with the quickest goal ever for the U.S. in a World Cup match.
He netted just 30 seconds into the match, breaking into the penalty area and striking home a left-footed shot past sprawling Ghana goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey.
"We have a great spirit and (we) fight until the last second," U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. "There is undoubtedly things that we need to improve. At the end of the day we got the three points."
The 2-1 scoreline was familiar but a turnaround from the 2006 and 2010 World Cups when Ghana eliminated the United States each time by the same score.
After a frustrating first half, Ghana threatened more often in the second 45 minutes, finally getting the goal that seemed would be their destiny eight minutes from the end.
Ayew finished neatly with the outside of his left boot after a flowing move that saw him collect a back heel from striker Asamoah Gyan.
The favored Ghanaians spent much of the game in the U.S. end. They often knocked the ball around as the Americans sat back on defense, trying not to be beaten by the Africans' speed.
Ghana, the youngest team in the tournament, attacked incessantly down the right side of the field in the first half, only to be undone by poor crosses that sailed high and wide.
The United States chose to rely on counterattacks and in the 19th minute almost doubled its 1-0 lead when striker Jozy Altidore had a good chance that was thwarted by a sliding defender.
It was heartbreak for the young American, who left the match with a hamstring injury two minutes later. He was replaced by Aron Johansson.
The Americans spent much of the second half chasing the ball and only mustered a Dempsey shot in the 79th minute that was easily saved by Kwarasey until Brooks' stunning goal, his first in an international match.
U.S. goalie Tim Howard had four saves. Kwarasey had three.
The United States faces Portugal on Sunday, while Ghana plays Germany on Saturday

Phaedra Screwed Apollo in Their Prenup?
On the first episode of The Real Housewives of Atlanta: Kandi's Wedding, Phaedra Parks' husband Apollo Nida advises Todd Tucker against signing a prenup unless its mutually Apollo doubles down on his comments and implies that he got screwed…

Apollo tells Straight from the A
“It doesn’t matter what Kandi has at the end of the day. So I had a lot to say when it came to the PreNup. Make sure you put your foot down… make sure you voice your opinion because, I went into my relationship not really voicing an opinion. I believed that my wife had my best interest at hand 1. being my wife and 2. being an attorney. So I was really nonchalant and I just feel back. So I told him, ‘don’t make the mistake that I made’.”
adding,
“Not saying that someone was taking advantage of me, but it was a mistake not being proactive and not being hands on and knowing A through Z. You have to know. If you’ve done what I’ve done by not speaking up… you’re going to be blindsided.”

Zendaya to Star in Aaliyah Biopic for Lifetime
*Disney Channel star Zendaya will portray Aaliyah in a Lifetime Original Movie about the life of the actress and R&B star who, at the height of her fame, died tragically in a plane crash.
The film, with the working title “Aaliyah: Princess of R&B,” is based on the bestseller Aaliyah: More Than a Woman by former Time Magazine music editor Christopher Farley. Production begins this summer for a Fall premiere.

Zendaya, who competed on “Dancing With the Stars” and ironically dressed as Aaliyah for Halloween last year, will record four of Aaliyah’s songs for the film, including many of her hit singles.
Per Lifetime:
Before Beyonce and before Rihanna, self-proclaimed “street but sweet” Aaliyah was poised to become a global icon with top-selling albums, a hot movie career and an adoring fan base. But behind the spotlight, Brooklyn-born, Detroit-raised Aaliyah Dana Haughton struggled to succeed in a tough business while staying grounded in the midst of her growing celebrity. The film follows the beautiful and talented performer’s inspirational journey, from her debut on Star Search at the age of ten to the challenges she faced during her rise to become the Princess of R&B. On August 25, 2001, at the height of her popularity, her life was tragically cut short when a plane carrying the singer and some of her video crew crashed after takeoff from a Bahamian runway. Although just 22-years-old at the time of her death, Aaliyah continues to lead a legacy as Billboard’s tenth most famous R&B artist of the past 25 years and one of the recording industry’s most successful artists in history.
Multi-talented actress and Hollywood Records artist Zendaya recently released her self-titled 2013 debut full-length album on which she delivers soulful pop with an urban edge. Her first single from the album, “Replay,” was certified platinum for selling 1,000,000 copies in the U.S. this January, and now has more than 54 million views on YouTube. Zendaya will star in the upcoming Disney Channel Original Series K.C. Undercover and the Disney Channel Original Movie, Zapped, which premieres this summer. She starred as Raquel “Rocky” Blue on the hit Disney Channel series Shake It Up!, as well as Shake It Up: Made In Japan, the record breaking song and dance–filled special that featured her single and video “Fashion is My Kryptonite.” Zendaya was also the break out star and runner-up on Season 16 of Dancing with the Stars.
“Aaliyah: Princess of R&B” will be produced by Aaliyah Productions, Inc. Howard Braunstein (The Informant!) and Debra Martin Chase (The Princess Diaries, Sparkle) will serve as executive producers. Bradley Walsh (Turn the Beat Around) will direct from a script written by Michael Elliot (Brown Sugar).
