The Daily Buzz For Jan 15

Fei Fei Sun Covers Vogue Italia’s First Ever Asian Cover!
[via People] Vogue Italia, the magazine known for taking a stand against anorexia and promoting the use of black models in fashion, made another statement this week, putting an Asian woman on its cover for the first time.
Chinese model Fei Fei Sun covers the magazine’s January issue (out worldwide Monday), a celebration of the multicultural, border-free facets of fashion. Editor in chief Franca Sozzani, who works as a Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations’ Fashion 4 Development Project, chose Sun for the honor.

“In the images, Fei Fei perfectly embodies a timeless idea of an extremely chic, beautiful woman,” Sozzani tells WWD. “In this world, beauty is king and it’s something that brings people together with no national and racial limits.”
Sun has previously modeled in campaigns for brands like Calvin Klein and Diesel, and first hit the runway at London Fashion Week in 2009. She’s starred in editorials for British Vogue, as well.

According to the Daily Mail, French Vogue was the first European magazine to put an Asian model on its cover — Chinese supermodel Du Juan, in 2011. And while both British and American editions of Vogue have featured Asian models in spreads, neither has selected an Asian woman for its cover … yet. Tell us: Are you disappointed at the lack of diversity in the fashion world?

Scandal Actor ‘Huck’ (Guillermo Diaz), Talks Being Openly Gay in Hollywood
Please don’t tell anyone, but we’ve developed a slightly peculiar crush on ‘Huck’ (real name Guillermo Diaz) of, ‘Scandal’. Since the season ended in December, we’ve been trolling and searching for all things Oliva Pope, Huck and the rest of ‘em–so much that we even posted the finale. Since the show is back today, we decided to give you an inside look at Huck (we like to stay in character, here), via his interview with Gay Star News. In it, the 37-year-old dishes on being an openly gay actor in Hollywood and how diverse he is on the big screen.

Peep a few excerpts:
On how he handles being openly gay in Hollywood:
‘I don’t even think about it, I’m an actor. I’ve been out since I started acting and I’ve worked my whole life. I think people get too caught up in it. I don’t stress about it. If somebody doesn’t want to work with me because I’m gay, I don’t want to work with them either.’
On being diverse on the big screen and haute enough for Britney Spears:
‘I played a drag queen in Stonewall but I played a straight guy in an episode I just did of Law & Order: SVU,’ he says. ‘And check this out, I played another straight guy in a movie in Utah (Ticket to Vegas) and Britney Spears called me to be in her music video. I was her love interest in I Want to Go which came out last year. My co-star plays the First Lady and she’s never been married to a president. Why isn’t that a big deal? So I can’t play a straight ex-CIA agent? It’s just common sense.’

On what ‘Scandal’ fans can expect this season:
‘You will find out so much more about my character,’ he says. ‘A lot of questions were left unanswered in the first season. It’s good and it’s juicy.’
Cool!

The director will is be thrilled that his film has been included in the Academy Award nominations.

Marcus Younger Brother of Michael Vick Sentenced
While his brother, Michael, spent most of the year in the headlines for his poor play and the struggles of the Philadelphia Eagles, former Miami Dolphins quarterback Marcus Vick has been in the headlines for his exploits off the field.
Those exploits have now led to jail time.
According to the Associated Press, Vick has been sentenced to five days for contempt of court after failing to provide adequate documentation of his financial situation prior to a court-imposed deadline.

Vick caused a stir earlier this year for comments made on his twitter account. Vick begged the Eagles to trade his brother and criticized their offensive line while the elder Vick was playing against the New Orleans Saints on Monday night. Michael was forced to respond to the comments after the game and wasn’t pleased with his brother’s actions.

The jail sentence is just the latest in Vick’s continued off-field troubles. Judge Brett Geisler issued the arrest warrant for Vick in a case regarding a $40,000 promissory note. Vick’s agent told the AP he hoped Vick will be able to provide the additional documentation or a reason why he was unable to do so

Tyler Perry offers $100,000 reward as he joins Al Sharpton in push to solve mystery of two men who disappeared a decade ago after encounter with SAME sheriff's deputy
Filmmaker Tyler Perry is offering a $100,000 reward for information in the decade-old case of two men who went missing after crossing paths with a sheriff's deputy in southwestern Florida.
Perry joined the Rev Al Sharpton and NAACP president and CEO Ben Jealous at a news conference on Thursday in Naples to discuss the missing-person investigations of Terrance Williams and Felipe Santos.
Santos and Williams disappeared three months apart in the Naples area in 2003 after crossing paths with Collier County Sheriff's Deputy Steven Calkins.
He was never charged but was fired the next year.
Perry said the media was not paying enough attention to missing-person cases involving minorities. Williams was black and Santos was an illegal immigrant from Mexico.
When he announced the reward, a man stepped from the front of the crowd to tell Perry something, indicating he had information to offer.
'I am beyond overwhelmed by it. And just like this man has come forward, I am sure there are others. You do not have to be afraid. The sheriff here has assured me that he will be safe and anyone else that wants to say anything or speak out about this will be safe.'
Sharpton said Perry called him to admonish him and others about the cases.

'Why aren't you civil rights leaders dealing with cases of missing people?' Sharpton said Perry asked him. 'And he began telling me the story of Terrance Williams, saying if we fight for what's right, how do we forget about people who just disappeared? And I felt guilty, because he's right. All of us have not done all we should.'
Investigations by local, state and federal authorities went nowhere. Calkins, who is white, denied doing anything more than dropping off the young men at different convenience stores.
He was never charged but was fired after he stopped cooperating with investigators.
Santos, who did farm work and construction, was 23 when he vanished in October 2003. He had been driving with his brothers to work when he got into a fender bender.
He didn't have registration or insurance, and Calkins arrested him, put him in the back of his patrol car and drove away.
When his brothers went to the jail to bail him out, he wasn't there. Later, Calkins told investigators that because Santos was so cooperative, he decided not to arrest him and dropped him off.
Williams was 27 and had moved to Naples from Tennessee to be closer to his mother after trouble with the police. His white Cadillac broke down in January 2004.
Calkins spotted it and called in to the Collier County Sheriff's Office to run the vehicle number and have the car towed. In the recorded conversation, Calkins and the dispatcher both talked in exaggerated black dialect.
Later, Calkins told investigators that Williams asked him for a ride to a store and he let him off there. Police reports said Williams was last spotted by witnesses near a cemetery.
Don Hunter, the Collier County sheriff at the time, said Calkins' patrol car was tested for blood and signs of a struggle, but nothing was found.
A tracking device was put on Calkins' car in case he had dumped their bodies and went back to the scene, Hunter said, but again nothing turned up.

The former sheriff noted that both men would have had some reason to disappear - Santos was in the country illegally, and Williams was due back in court in Tennessee, where he was facing jail time for failure to pay child support.
A phone number listed for Calkins was not in service.
'I think in this community, people are afraid to speak up,' Marcia Williams said after the news conference. 'They don't want to get involved.'
Williams said she has shown news reports of her son's disappearance to his four children. The youngest, a 12-year-old, told her: 'Now I understand,' the youngest said to her.

A brother and friend of Santos attended the event but declined comment.
Both cases remain open and active, current Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said.
'We have vetted all tips received thus far and continue to monitor and update national databases,' he said. 'Today, however, is different' because Perry and others' involvement would 'have a positive effect on the continuing investigation into these cases.

Kyle Massey Settles Lawsuit Over Bristol Palin Reality Show!
Can we finally say the Palin era is over? The Massey’s Reach Settlement Regarding Their Creation Of “Bristol Palin: Life Is A Tripp”
TV stars Kyle Massey and his brother Chris Massey, along with their mother, Angel Massey, have settled their legal battle over a show they created that broadcasted on Lifetime.
The Masseys filed suit last year alleging copyright infringement, fraud and deceit, breach of contract, breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, misappropriation of name, likeness and image, tortious interference with prospective economic advantage, and unfair competition in a multi-count, 30-page complaint. The Massey’s brought a lawsuit against David Stanton a.k.a. David McKenzie, Helping Hands, LLC, Associated Television International for producing and airing the show, “Bristol Palin: Life’s A Tripp,” which aired on Lifetime. The Massey’s have now succeeded in reaching a mutually satisfactory settlement.

“This is exactly what should happen when good lawyers and top-notch clients work together to get things done. In just five short months, the Massey’s can move on with their business of making quality family entertainment without the distraction of litigation,” said California trial attorney, Courtney M. Coates, who led the litigation together with the Massey’s personal lawyer James L. Walker, Jr., based in Atlanta.

“I am extremely excited for the Massey’s in how this case has worked out and thank them for entrusting Courtney and I in representing them. We have advised hundreds of clients; and never met any as brilliant as the Massey’s and tenacious in fighting for their rights,” stated attorney James L. Walker.

This is a big lesson in protecting your property and ideas in Hollywood!

Keyshia is NOT having Miss Neffie writing TRASH in her new BOOK!
I’m guessing by Keyshia Cole’s twitter rant, she doesn’t like what her sister Neffe wrote in her recent book titled ‘The Price I Paid,’ which was released back in November.
Check out some of Keyshia’s twitter rant below:

I’m hoping whatever Keyshia and Neffe are going through…they can work it out, they have to remember they are still family no matter what!!!!

"Django Unchained" ACTION Figures?
Along the same lines as other profitable action flicks, the Weinstein company has released a line of action figures associated with its hit Django Unchained.

The eight-inch action figures are available on Amazon.com and come "...with tailored clothing, weaponry, and accessories in the likeness of characters played by Foxx, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Leonardo DiCaprio, James Remar and Christoph Waltz."

Noted black film critic Tim Gordon spoke to The Daily Beast about the dolls and the film saying, “There were a lot of things that were done for Django that would’ve never been done for Inglourious Basterds … but people don’t speak up. People have gotten so -- I don’t know if the word is comfortable or naïve. We just want to go along to get along and it’s very frustrating.”

While we all agree that the company should be able to profit from the success of the flick, are we ok with "slavery" being turned into a marketable commodity....again?  Given, the movie was not a documentary or truly historical depiction of slavery as it was a Hollywood film for entertainment.  But didn't the film portray pretty true points about slavery...and therefore the action figures could be taken as a glorification of what went down?

Also, Amazon doesn't go into detail about the accessories but we wonder if either character comes with a "whip."  And how would we feel about that?
Speak on it....are the dolls an example of marketing going too far?

Mary J. Blige As Betty Shabazz
Mary J. Blige starred in last year’s musical “Rock of Ages,” and now she’s stepping into an entirely new role. The Grammy-winning singer plays Dr. Betty Shabazz, civil rights advocate and the wife of Malcolm X, in the Lifetime Original Movie “Betty & Coretta,” which she also executive produced.

The film centers on the real-life stories of Coretta Scott King (Angela Bassett) and Shabazz as they form an unbreakable life-long bond after their husbands’ tragic assassinations.
Mary drew inspiration from Shabazz’ strength. “If Betty had not moved forward, Malcolm X would have died and that would have been it,” she told Los Angeles Confidential. “I didn’t even realize that she and Coretta had been friends. Women never get a chance to have their stories told when there are important men involved. That’s what drew me to the part.”

“Betty & Coretta” premieres Saturday, February 2, at 8 p.m. on Lifetime.

Justin Timberlake: I’M BACK!
Justin Timberlake has announced his return to music.

The star took a break from singing in 2006 to focus on his acting career, chalking up roles in Friends with Benefits, Bad Teacher, In Time and Trouble with the Curve.
He explained in a video on justintimberlake.com on Thursday that he waited until he was inspired before taking to the studio to work on new material, but has yet to give a date for or any details of his new release.
Following the announcement, a countdown clock appeared on the screen indicating more information will be available in three days.
In the video, he said: 'Someone asked me the other day "So are you just done with music?" It means more to me than to anybody else in the world.
'Look I've only done two albums in 10 years that's the way I really look at it. What does the next decade mean for me? I'm the one who sits and is obsessive about it before you even get to hear it.'
Justin, who shot to  claimed working on new music can be 'torture' as he is a perfectionist who only wants to release material he loves.
He added: 'As close as I get to it, I don't know that I could physically torture myself year in and year out and expect it to fulfill me the way that it does and the way that it is right now. I don't want to put anything out that out that I feel is something I don't love. You just don't get that every day. You have to wait for it...I'm ready.'

J.R. Smith COVERS "BLEU" Magazine, DISHES ON TATTOOS And BALLING With His BROTHER
J.R. Smith, the 26-year-old tattoo-covered NY Knicks Baller, who's been spending his QT with "LAHH" star K. Michelle, expressed his love for fashion in the latest issue of BLEU Magazine.  Inside, while donning some of the latest winter fashions, he talked about what it's like playing for the Knicks alongside his brother Chris and what he hopes to do in the fashion world.

While rocking Calvin Kelin pants, GStar hat and an Entree top with an Edwin D'Angelo leather vest on the cover, he also revealed why Michael Jordan is one of his biggest inspirations. Here are the highlights:
On his love of fashion….
“It’s never an off day for me. Even if you have the frumpiest clothes on and you got swag, you can make that shit look good. In the next three years I want to have my own clothing line.”

On his early life as a rookie …
“Being 17 with 28, 29 and 30 year old basketball players, there was sort of a maturity aspect to it. I had a great opportunity to start earlier than most people. So while a few guys my age are only four or five years in, this is my ninth year. So it really helped impact my maturity level.”

On his brother Chris signing with the Knicks…
“It’s going to be easier for me on the road. When you have seen a group of guys for several months throughout the year, [opposed] to someone who has been there your whole life it’s a totally different situation. I get to play basketball and go to work [with my brother] everyday. So I think it’s going to be real cool.”
On his tattoos……
“I don’t think I was addicted. Addicted is a pretty strong word. If you’re addicted you can’t stop. I can stop whenever I want, I just choose not to.”

On Michael Jordan as his inspiration …..
“Jordan is the greatest of all times. He’s one of the reasons why I go so hard and push myself to be the best because I want to be…not better…but just as good.”
