Nassau Co. officer & motorist killed, Suspect shot. Darrell Fuller, who allegedly shot and killed a Nassau County police officer and an innocent motorist, has been shot and is in custody.
A 911 caller reported hearing gunfire in Queens amid a massive manhunt for Fuller. Responding officers found him in a vehicle - not the one carjacked - with what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
The original shooting appears to have taken place at 241st Street and Jamaica Avenue, in the Bellerose section of Queens, at a Mobil gas station.
Police officials believe the officer, identified as 29-year-old Arthur Lopez was shot after pulling over the suspect due to a bumper falling off the car . The suspect then took off and officials believe when the suspect began having car problems he shot another man before stealing his car and taking off. That car was recovered in a Queens neighborhood.
Police officer Arthur Lopez was just 29-years-old. He had not yet married and had no children.
Police say Fuller shot and killed him during a traffic stop in Bellrose after a hit and run accident some blocks away.
After Lopez was hit, Fuller ran, and allegedly carjacked a vehicle belonging to 52-year-old Raymond Facey, and police say, Fuller shot and killed him too.
Nursing student Colin Young tried to help, but Facey died.
Raymond Facey was sitting in his car, pulled over on the Cross Island Parkway.
"He pulled over to talk to his daughter," said Christine Camron, the victim's sister-in-law.
Family members say he was on the phone with his daughter who then heard some of the deadly confrontation. She told family members that she heard her father say,''Who are you running from, and why are you running?" Those were his last words. Family members say after that, Facey's daughter heard her father scream and then silence. "I just know he doesn't deserve this," Camron said, "He's too good, too much of a good person, bothers nobody , it's just a tragedy."
He was a married father of four adult children and two grandchildren.
Neighbors remember the truck driver as a nice man."It's very shocking, it's overwhelming," said Ruth Green, a neighbor. Fuller was found later in the evening outside a van in Queens with two self inflicted gunshot wounds, and was taken to a local hospital.
Many believe Fuller should have still been in jail after the drug conviction.
Fuller is a violent career criminal who kept getting another chance.
According to his long rap sheet he was convicted of attempted murder back in 2004, but served only five years for trying to take someone's life.
Back on the street he was arrested in 2010 for selling crack cocaine in Nassau County and for that he served only nine months and then out on parole.
Eyewitness News went to his mother's home and last known address on Montauk Street in the Springfield Gardens section of Queens.There are numerous cars on their property. It's not clear if the 33-year-old worked on the vehicles or why he allegedly went on such a killing spree.
Authorities say he ended the horrific rampage by shooting himself twice including once in the head.
Doctors at Jamaica Hospital are trying to do for Fuller what they couldn't for the officer and the innocent motorist, trying to save the life of this accused cold-blooded killer. He's listed in guarded condition.
According to records Fuller was released from Fishkill last May. But he also served time at Wende correctional facility and while there he was disciplined for having been found with some kind of contraband.
Police officer Arthur Lopez was just a week shy of his 30th birthday.
Having served eight years on the force, he earned several awards for his bravery and dedication.
"This is a very sad day here in Nassau County," said Edward Mangano, Nassau County Executive.
Lopez also volunteered with the Dix Hills Fire Department from 2003 to 2005.
At his home in Babylon, a lone police cruiser stood guard.Neighbors couldn't believe what's happened.
It was less than 24 hours ago that the Nassau County Police Department buried highway Patrolman Joseph Olivieri.
He was also killed in the line of duty, hit while responding to an accident on the LIE last Thursday morning.At Lopez's barracks in Bellmore, the flags were already at half staff, the purple memorial ribbons were already hanging to honor Olivieri.
And now they'll stay up."To say this is a difficult time is an understatement," said James Carver, Nassau County PBA. Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice released a statement saying, "Yet again we mourn the loss of a dedicated member of the Nassau County Police Department who lost his life protecting the community he so honorably served. Today, a cold-blooded killer cut short the lives of Officer Arthur Lopez and an innocent civilian, and my thoughts and prayers are with both of their families, friends, and colleagues.
Officer Lopez was one of our finest, a decorated police officer, selfless volunteer firefighter, dedicated EMT, and a devoted son and brother. This tragedy is yet another sobering reminder of the risks our brave police officers face every day to keep our communities safe. We will prosecute the killer who committed this despicable crime, and make no mistake, justice will be done." R.I.P to the fallen!
