#MAGFAB: 'Cross' star Aldis Hodge for Emmy Magazine!
Showrunner Ben Watkins and star Aldis Hodge reveal why authenticity, context and nuance were crucial to bringing detective Alex Cross to television 31 years after his debut in the first of James Patterson's 32 bestselling books
Aldis Hodge had only read 10 or so pages of Prime Video's Cross when he put it down and called his team. He was awed by the richness and elegance with which Alex Cross, the crime-solving forensic psychologist from James Patterson's bestselling novels, was depicted. Hodge liked that Alex, a family man who lives in the Southeast Washington, D.C., community he serves, didn't feel one- dimensional or tokenized. "It felt honest," he says. But he had questions: "Can we maintain this awesomeness? Can we retain the sense of authenticity? But first and foremost, is the show creator Black?" It's a valid query, given the character's history and where we are today.
When Patterson first introduced Cross in his 1993 novel Along Came a Spider, audiences didn't much object to a white guy telling a story from a Black man's point of view, and if they did, said objections were drowned out by the cha-ching! of cash registers as Spider flew off shelves. Yet some 30 years later — with 31 more Alex Cross titles published, more than 300 million books sold and three films released (Kiss the Girls in 1997, Along Came a Spider in 2001 and Alex Cross in 2012) — the wider context in which a fictional Black officer created by a white man exists is much different. So, while Hodge liked the script and even had a great deal of respect for Patterson
after speaking with him ("I talked to James about what inspired him, and it came from a very heartfelt and respectful place," he says), the matter of who created Cross and who'd be in charge remained an important factor in determining whether or not he'd say yes. "I know some people might be a bit fatigued with the conversation of, 'Why does [the show creator] have to be Black?'" says Hodge, a versatile performer who started acting as a kid and has starred in a range of genres including crime drama ( City on a Hill), thriller ( Underground ), historical drama ( Hidden Figures ) and even superhero ( Black Adam ). "But when you talk about writing authentic stories from a real place, you tap into knowledge, experience and information that cannot be fabricated. That's why it's important — [having someone] understand what 'normal' looks like, without having to explain who and what we are. I've been on too many shows where I've had to explain. And it's hard."

Kenya Moore is opening up about the sisterly bond she shared with Tyra Banks.
The former Real Housewives of Atlanta star, 53, was recalling her '90s era in an interview with The Shade Room when the conversation turned to Banks, 51.
"In the 90s, we were inseparable," Moore recalled of her bond with the supermodel. "If she wasn't at my house, I was at her house. Like, her mom was my mom."
Moore then recounted how the conversations between the "best friends" were like those days.
"We just could not get off the phone. It's almost like when you're on the phone with your man and you're like, ‘Are you going to hang up? Are you asleep?’ That's what we were — we were sisters," she explained.
"That's another thing about people from the ’90s: We didn't talk. We didn't talk about the dates and the guys and always on social media crying and talking about your problems. We didn't do all of that," she said. "There wasn't social media, so everything was private."
Moore also got candid about having learned a lot about business from Banks, who in addition to modeling and acting, has launched numerous ventures including an entertainment company.
"Just seeing her marketing, her business savvy was just above and beyond anything I had ever seen, coming from Miss USA. You know, I met her right after Miss USA, so my head wasn't there," she continued, referring to winning the prestigious pageant title in 1993.
However, the reality star also remembers Banks as a hyperactive businesswoman, comparing her to "a machine" when it came to building her business empire.
"You know how you have all your people? She had all these people and she had all these ideas and she was able to see everything through," she explained. "It was really beautiful to watch a young Black girl flourish in that way."

TikTok Faces Sale-Or-Ban Mandate In US After Court Upholds Law
TikTok is one step closer to being banned in the United States. On Friday (Dec. 6), CNN reported that a federal appeals court consisting of three judges ruled unanimously to uphold a law that could outlaw the popular app in America. The legislation was originally passed back in April, with Congress requiring TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, to sell the company to an American owner by Jan. 19, 2025. President Joe Biden then signed the legislation into law, putting pressure on the company to comply or face an outright ban.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit released a statement regarding the decision. The legal body asserted that their decision was made in good faith, citing to protect American citizens’ right to free speech from “a foreign adversary nation and to limit that adversary’s ability to gather data on people in the United States.”
“We recognize that this decision has significant implications for TikTok and its users. Unless TikTok executes a qualified divestiture by January 19, 2025 — or the President grants a 90-day extension based upon progress towards a qualified divestiture, § 2(a)(3) — its platform will effectively be unavailable in the United States, at least for a time,” the ruling concluded.
“Consequently, TikTok’s millions of users will need to find alternative media of communication. That burden is attributable to the PRC’s hybrid commercial threat to U.S. national security, not to the U.S. Government, which engaged with TikTok through a multi-year process in an effort to find an alternative solution. The First Amendment exists to protect free speech in the United States. Here the Government acted solely to protect that freedom from a foreign adversary nation and to limit that adversary’s ability to gather data on people in the United States.”
However, with the ball now in TikTok’s court, the company could look to take the battle to the Supreme Court floor. The social media app released a statement of their own, saying, “The Supreme Court has an established historical record of protecting Americans’ right to free speech, and we expect they will do just that on this important constitutional issue,” the company’s statement read. “Unfortunately, the TikTok ban was conceived and pushed through based upon inaccurate, flawed and hypothetical information, resulting in outright censorship of the American people. The TikTok ban, unless stopped, will silence the voices of over 170 million Americans here in the US and around the world on January 19th, 2025.”
Interestingly enough, newly elected president Donald Trump tackled the TikTok issue during his election campaign. Trump stated that, once he took office in January, he would work to “save TikTok.”
Since September 2017, TikTok has become a mainstay for millions of Americans, especially as a means of employment. According to statistics gathered by NBC News, the application is now used by half of the country.

According to footage caught by attendees, the chaos happened as Mariah Carey sang “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” In the viral clip, a woman could be seen throwing a drink at another woman, leading to her man jumping in the mix.
Another angle shows two men throwing blows, with one of them resembling the man who intervened in the women’s fight. A person could also be heard yelling, “Where’s the f**king security?” in the background. See below.
There hasn’t been any word on what sparked the brawl or if Mariah even noticed the madness happening but despite it all, she gave one helluva show.

Disney Influencer Dominique Brown Dead at 34 after allergic reaction at food event
Dominique Brown, who chronicled her love for the brand and its theme parks on her personal page and the @BlackGirlDisney account on Instagram, has died. She was 34.
The influencer died after reportedly experiencing an allergic reaction at a holiday event pop culture merchandise retailer BoxLunch hosted in Los Angeles Dec. 5, according to multiple reports. The official cause of her death was not released.
"We are devastated by the passing of Dominique Brown," a BoxLunch rep told People in a statement on Saturday, Dec. 7, "a beloved member of the BoxLunch Collective, who suffered a medical emergency at an event hosted by BoxLunch on Thursday in Los Angeles."
The statement added, "Our hearts go out to her family and friends, and we will do everything we can to support them and the members of the BoxLunch Collective and our team during this painful time."
Brown's brother, Patrick Ramos, thanked fans for their support after news of his sister's death was made public.
"I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to her social media fam for showing her so much love and light," he wrote Dec. 6 in a comment on the influencer's last Instagram post, shared two days prior. "Disney did bring her joy, but it was unparalleled that she found a community who loved her and Disney as much as she did."

Steve Mensch, Tyler Perry Studios president, dies in plane crash
Steve Mensch, the president and general manager of studio operations at Tyler Perry Studios, died in a plane crash Friday night, according to officials.
The Florida Highway Patrol said troopers found Mensch dead at the scene of a crash just after 8 p.m. in Citrus County, Florida. The agency does not name Mensch as the man who died, though the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office said it was Mensch, 62, from Fayetteville, Georgia.
“FHP Troopers responded to a single engine fixed-wing airplane crash on West White Dogwood Drive near the intersection of US-98,” FHP said in a statement. “An adult male occupant of the aircraft was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash.”
In an email to CNN on Saturday, Tyler Perry Studios said: “We are incredibly saddened by the passing of our dear friend, Steve Mensch. Steve was a cherished member of our team for more than 8 years, and well beloved in the community of Atlanta. It is hard to imagine not seeing him smiling throughout the halls. We will miss him dearly. Our heart goes out to his family as we all send them our prayers.”
The Federal Aviation Administration said the pilot was the only person on board the single-engine Vans RV12, though the agency did not mention Mensch by name.
A National Transportation Safety Board investigator is expected to visit the crash site Saturday to begin documenting the scene and examining the aircraft, the NTSB told CNN in an email. A preliminary report from the agency about the crash is expected within 30 days.
Mensch managed the day-to-day operations at Tyler Perry Studios, a 300-acre studio lot in Atlanta, Georgia, according to his LinkedIn profile.
In 2019, Mensch gave CNN a tour of the facility, saying, “What Tyler has built here is the only major motion picture studio on the East Coast.”
Mensch explained at the time how the studio he oversaw blended old with new, saying, “The history on this property is immense. Founded in 1885, we have 40 buildings on the national register, we’ve built a dozen state of the art sound stages.”
“We can take advantage of a hundred years of Hollywood history, of best practices and we’ve done that in incorporating the stages,” he said at the time. “Then we use the very best technology in our infrastructure, so we have the best of both.”
Perry, who made history as the first African American to fully own a major production studio, said Mensch, “was truly a kind soul and a great leader at the studio.”
“I’ve been trying to understand this tragedy all day—what went wrong with that plane,” Perry said in a post on Instagram Saturday night. “Steve loved flying, and he loved that plane; he took so much pride in it.”
“We all adored him and are devastated that he’s gone. I’m praying for his family as we all try to make sense of this heartbreak,” Perry added.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp expressed his condolences on social media after Mensch’s death, praising him as “a good man” and his contributions to the Peach State’s film industry.
“A good man and an instrumental part of a studio Georgia is proud to call its own, his achievements made our state better and brought more opportunities to its people,” Kemp said on X. “His loved ones and the entire Tyler Perry Studios team will be in our thoughts and prayers as they mourn this loss.”

On Wednesday (Dec. 4), the Den of Thieves 2 actor reposted Schulz's recent viral clip, where the Flagrant podcast host responded to Kendrick Lamar seemingly referencing him on GNX opener "Wacced Out Murals." "Don't let no white comedian talk about no Black woman, that's law," rapped the Compton artist on the song.
On his podcast, Schulz strangely responded that if he ended up in a jail cell with the 17-time Grammy winner he'd "make love" to him and joking threatened that "the only thing that he could do is decide if it's consensual or not."
This set off Jackson and Top Dawg Entertainment president Terrence "Punch" Henderson, with the actor calling Schulz a "weird ass n***a" on X.

Jackson has to be more than familiar with the song since he reenacted its recording in the 2015 N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton. Kelly Price Slams Promoter for Failing to Pay When She Arrived to Perform Friday
The singer went live to inform her fans about the ordeal. Still in full glam, she explained that the promoter had pushed back the payment several times that day. However, given her history with the individual, Price says she showed up anyway, only to learn that they still didn’t have her money.
“I did show up. I actually just left the venue because they weren’t able to complete the transaction. I wasn’t willing to wait to have the completion of the transaction done,” she shared.
Price didn’t share too many details surrounding the show itself. She referenced New Orleans in the video but had previously been promoting a show on her Instagram that was to take place in Baton Rouge, which is about 82 miles northwest of New Orleans. That lineup also featured Keith Sweat, Adina Howard, and Brownstone and was also slated for Friday, December 6th. Noticeably, Price turned the comments off on that post.
“I love New Orleans. And I know that New Orleans loves me. And I know that a lot of times, people want to believe that the artists are on weird stuff or whatever the case may be. And people can have their opinions. But the reality of it is I’ve been doing this over 30 years. And if I was really a flake, I still wouldn’t be out here performing…It’s always a better look for me to be able to take the stage. I’ve known that my entire career. However, at some point, sometimes you can do a favor for a person. Sometimes, you do a favor just because the audience is there. But the reality of it is, you do too many favors, people start believing that they can bring you in and not pay you to sing.”

It’s unclear what took place or who this message is aimed at. However, Trina has previously had a public conflict with a family member. Back in 2022, Trina’s cousin Bobby Lytes revealed that he was “on the outs” with the “Here We Go” star. This followed a heated exchange with her then-fiancé, Raymond Taylor. Lytes suggested that Taylor was causing a wedge between him and Trina.
Thankfully, they reconciled, but it doesn’t mean they haven’t sparred behind the scenes. Trina is currently married to Benjamin Kearse Jr., with whom she tied the knot in May 2024. It’s unknown if the real estate agent is the one who upset Trina, though it’s unlikely that she will share that bit of information. She has chosen to keep much of her marriage under wraps in the months since the wedding.
