In the May 2024 issue of Vogue Arabia Hayek is the fashion star photographed by Cuneyt Akeroglu [IG]. Vogue fashion director Amine Jreissati styles the actor in shimmering Balenciaga above, Gucci with Bucheron jewelry in the second position and Alexander McQueen in the third position.
“We never lie to each other. It allowed us to navigate the hypocrisy and fakeness of Hollywood. I always call you to work on a character because there is no one else in the world that could understand me better,” Hayek Pinault says about Penelope Cruz.
Salma Hayek was born on September 2, 1966 in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico. Her father is of Lebanese descent and her mother is of Mexican/Spanish ancestry. The actor is an American citizen, married in 2009 to the very famous French man Francois-Henri Pinault, the chairman and CEO of Kering since 2005.

Having roots in the Lebanese village of Baabdat, Hayek Pinault is prouder than ever of being Arab. Speaking to Cruz about what it truly means to be an Arab in today’s world, the star says, “Arabs have an almost unmatchable passion for life that is constantly tested. It’s almost because you are confronted with death consistently, you value every little moment of life.” Adding, “For us Arabs, to cook and eat together as a family is a blessing. I try to teach my kids simple things like that, about the blessings of small, precious moments.”

#RHOA: THE GLOVES ARE OFF! Porsha Williams’ Ex Simon Guobadia Scoffs at ‘RHOA’ Star’s Demand for $50k in Ugly Divorce War!
Real Housewives of Atlanta star Porsha Williams’ estranged husband Simon Guobadia asked that her demand for a 5-figure sum to pay her divorce lawyers be shut down.

According to court documents obtained by RadarOnline.com, Simon said the Bravo star was not entitled to a dime from him as they continue to fight over the validity of their prenuptial agreement.
In a recent motion, Porsha asked the court for $50k from Simon. Her lawyer wrote, “Wife has incurred and will continue to incur significant attorneys’ fees and expenses of litigation to defend against Husband’s Motion, which includes false statements and allegations, and requests that Husband be ordered to pay Wife temporary attorney’s fees in the amount of $50,000.00 given that his actions have caused Wife to not only file her Request for Immediate and Emergency Relief, but also to respond to the instant Motion.”

In a newly filed motion, Simon's lawyer argued against her client paying Porsha the $50k.
She said, "This Court should deny [Porsha's] request for attorney’s fees because she has failed to provide a statutory basis for the request as required under Georgia law."

The lawyer argued, "[Porsha's] request for a lump sum award of $50,000 in attorney’s fees is not allowed by law." A judge has yet to rule on the matter.

As RadarOnline.com first reported, Porsha filed for divorce on February 22 after 15 months of marriage. She demanded their prenup be enforced and Simon vacate the marital home.
Simon opposed the request to leave the home. He said she should move into the home she owns nearby.

In addition, Porsha slammed Simon for allegedly changing the locks to the gates and blocking her access to the home. Simon called out Porsha for allegedly bringing an armed guard to the home after the split.

The reality star trashed Simon in court documents.
She claimed to have left after learning about her husband's alleged immigration issues.
Her lawyer wrote, "[Porsha] shows that the news reports of [Simon's] alleged immigration fraud, and what appeared to be an imminent threat of deportation, were shocking and affected Wife’s mental and emotional wellbeing. None of this information was ever disclosed by Husband to Wife, despite Wife having previously inquired about Husband’s immigration status and criminal history.”

He added, "Since learning of Husband’s checkered immigration history and status, Wife began to question everything that she initially believed to be true as it relates to her Husband’s character, immigration, business dealings, etc, and began to uncover additional information that Husband failed to disclose to Wife. [Porsha] did not wish to remain married to a stranger, and filed for divorce.”

As RadarOnline.com first reported, Simon's company Simcol was hit with a massive default judgment in a lawsuit over a private jet deal.
Simon told RadarOnline.com, "It is not uncommon to have business disputes and I’m very comfortable in having them resolved in due time."

#NewMusic from Lalah Hathaway Releases New Single “So In Love”!

Check out the brand new single from R&B icon Lalah Hathaway called “So In Love”.
This is the first official single from her upcoming studio album called “Vantablack. Lalah’s upcoming eighth studio album is set to be released on June 14th, 2024 via Hathaway Entertainment/SRG-ILS Group. Lalah adds about the new song:

“”So In Love” was written by Philip Beaudreau and I a couple years ago with the intention to pitch it, but we loved it so much and decided to sit with it for a while. I’ve recently added it to my show and it’s one of the most beloved pieces that we perform. “So In Love” has such a vibe and like a lot of the work i do, it explores some of the more non traditional ideas about love, and self love. The video does this on a grand scale!.”

LISTEN HERE:
As we prepare for the release of the upcoming album, music lovers abroad will be taken on a magical ride of this new Lalah Hathaway era, as she will be treating them with a new music every other week leading up to the release of “Vantablack”. She adds:

“VANTABLACK was always the name of the project. The word itself has so much weight on it, I was really unsure of how to approach the idea of writing the song. At the time, what I thought were conflicting perspectives, actually began to shape the concept of not only this album but also how I saw myself. I started reframing how I saw color, in terms of being the blackest I’ve ever been and even though I’m steeped in who I am, it doesn’t exclude the other things that make up the sum of me. Similar to how all the music around me informs the black music that I create. So it’s all a melting pot and this song truly exemplifies that.”

#HipHopNews: Drake Rebuts Kendrick Lamar's Allegations On "THE HEART PART 6"
Drake released “THE HEART PART 6” on Sunday (May 5) evening in response to Kendrick Lamar’s recent diss track, “Not Like Us.”
Lamar’s song, which dropped the previous day (May 4), levied serious accusations against the Toronto rapper, including claims of him messing with underage women and collaborating with Atlanta artists for relevancy.

In “THE HEART PART 6,” Draker refuted Lamar’s remarks and suggested the Compton emcee was baited with false information. “The ones you’re getting your stories from, they all clowns/ I am a war general, seasoned in preparation,” the five-time Grammy winner rapped. “You waited for this moment, overcome with the desperation/ We plotted for a week and then fed you the information/ A daughter that’s 11 years old, I bet he takes it.”

Drake further questioned why Lamar’s fiancée, Whitney Alford, hasn’t spoken out about the rumors of Dave Free possibly being one of her children’s father — a callback to allegations the “God’s Plan” artist made on last week’s “Family Matters.” “You haven’t seen the kids in six months, the distance is wild/ Dave leaving heart emojis underneath pics of the child,” he spat on the latest diss.

Notably, the cover for “THE HEART PART 6” contained Free’s Instagram comment, which Drake alluded to in the above lyrics. Meanwhile, the song title served as a direct nod to Lamar’s “The Heart” series.

Addressing the more severe accusations of misconduct, Drake made a reference to Lamar’s past traumas shared in “Mother I Sober,” where the 36-year-old discussed his mother’s fear of him being sexually abused as a child.
“Wait a second, that’s that one record where you say you got molested/ Aw, I just made the whole connection/ This about to get so depressin’/ This is trauma from your own confessions,” Drake rapped. “This when your father leave you home alone with no protection, so neglected/ That’s why these pedophile raps is s**t you so obsessed with, it’s so excessive.”

He further rebutted Lamar’s pedophilia jabs with lines like, “Only f**kin’ with Whitneys, not Millie Bobby Browns, I’d never look twice at no teenager” and “Drake is not a name that you gon’ see on no sex offender list, ‘Eazy-Duz-It’/ You mentionin’ A minor, but n**gas gotta B sharp and tell the fans, ‘Who was it?’”

Katt Williams Cracks Jokes About Reparations, Ukraine War & 'Club Shay Shay' Appearance in 'Woke Foke' Netflix Special

Katt Williams' new Netflix stand-up comedy special, Woke Foke, is here and the comedian covers a wide range of topics, including reparations, Ozempic, his explosive Club Shay Shay appearance, and more.
The special aired live on Saturday night at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, California, and featured the legendary comedian performing with an array of tricks up his sleeve, including sound effects, music cues, and photos serving as visual aids for his jokes. Williams took aim at a number of people during his set, including Nick Cannon, Robert De Niro, Jamie Foxx, Da Brat, Trick Daddy, Tory Lanez, Lizzo, Oprah Winfrey, Gayle King, P. Diddy, and more.

In his opening remarks, Williams reflected on his Club Shay Shay appearance where he dissed several of his peers and made claims regarding the entertainment industry. According to Williams, he's always going to tell his fans the truth.
"I tried to be incog-Negro but thanks to Shannon Sharpe's loudmouth ass, the gig is up," he said. "Everybody knows I'll tell. But I don't do no snitching! Y'all know my job. In my spare time I infiltrate the Illuminati. Look for their secrets. Run back. Tell y'all. And they'd kill me if they could, but I'm too fast, and the Lord keep blessing me."

With reparations, Williams stated it was time for those to be sent out to Black people and used the war between Ukraine and Russia as an example.
"It is now time for Black people in America to get paid reparations for everything that them and their ancestors have been through in American history," Williams said to the audience at YouTube Theater. "Why now, Katt? Thanks for asking, white friends. I'll tell you why now. And understand white friends, I don't speak for all Black people. But I do speak for all n***as. And you are not supposed to know the difference."

Williams continued, "We just gave $100 billion to the Ukraine. And God bless the Ukrainians. But off the record? We don't know them n***as like that! You could've gave that money to Black people. The fuck? We done gave them all that money. The truth is they over there getting their ass whooped over there. You coulda gave that money to the Black people of Los Angeles, and they'd have went over there and whooped their ass in two weeks."

Diddy Nominated For 3 BET Awards Despite Sex Abuse Charges

Diddy has been nominated in three categories at the upcoming BET Awards, despite dealing with controversy over sexual abuse allegations.
According to reports, the first round of voting for artists to receive nominations at the 2024 BET Awards has begun – and embattled music mogul and artist Diddy is listed on the ballot multiple times. The categories include his recent The Love Album: Off the Grid, for Album of The Year, and the track “Closer To God” with Teyana Taylor from the album is in consideration for Song of The Year. He’s also apparently nominated for Video of the Year for his guest appearance in the video for “Creepin”, a song done by Metro Boomin with 21 Savage and The Weeknd. The first round of voting is set to conclude on Tuesday (May 7). Studios, record labels, and managers can submit award nominations, with some categories allowing voters to write in nominees.

The Love Album qualifies for nominations since it was released on September 15, 2023. The album didn’t receive broad acclaim, but it was notable due to the amount of high-profile guests who appeared on it such as Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Mary J. Blige, Herb Alpert, John Legend, and Burna Boy. Two months after its release, Diddy aka Sean Combs would find himself in swarming legal trouble just a week after earning two Grammy Award nominations after ex-partner and singer on his label Cassie Ventura filed a sexual abuse lawsuit against him. (The album would lose to SOS, by SZA.) Diddy would settle the suit with Ventura shortly afterward but it was a harbinger of things to come.

Diddy is now dealing with multiple lawsuits from different victims, including one where he and former Bad Boy Records president Harve Pierre and a third man were accused of transporting a then 17-year-old from Michigan to New Jersey and then a New York studio where she was sexually assaulted. The mogul also saw his homes in Miami and Los Angeles raided by Homeland Security in line with a federal investigation of allegations of sexual trafficking that have been levied against Diddy and his 26-year-old son Christian. Representatives for Diddy declined to answer questions.

Rihanna Cancels 2024 Met Gala Appearance At Last Minute Due To Flu
Rihanna has left an empty seat and a hole in her fans' hearts with her no-show at the 2024 Met Gala. The Barbadian beauty may have left Navy hanging at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday, May 6 as she had to sit this year's event out.

The nine-time Grammy winner, who had planned to attend the fashion's biggest event, canceled her appearance at the last minute due to illness. A source told PEOPLE on Monday that she decided to stay home as she's sick with the flu.
Rihanna has not addressed her canceled appearance at the Met Gala. A few days ago, she expressed her excitement for the event as she teased her vibe for the fundraiser. "I'm actually keeping it real simple this year. ... I think it's gonna come to what my makeup and what my hair is going to do," she told Extra as she celebrated the launch of her new Fenty Beauty Soft'lit Foundation at an event in Los Angeles, California, on April 26.

The Fenty Beauty founder additionally revealed that she had two gowns picked out. "We wanna play with that, but I have no idea what I'm gonna do with that," she added. Describing the two outfits, she said, "Very simple-ish ... compared to everything I have done." The singer further teased, "I am showing up for dinner. Shout out to Anna Wintour."

Unfortunately, fans may never know what Rihanna was planning to wear for this year's Met Gala.
Other celebrities who skipped the 2024 Met Gala were Blake Lively, Jared Leto and Katy Perry. Katy has explained her absence at the event after AI photos of her at the fundraiser went viral and duped fans.

On her Instagram page, the mother of one posted a screenshot of her mother's text message to her. "Ha Feather! Didn't know you went to the Met. What a gorgeous gown, you look like the Rose Parade, you are your own float lol," the text from Mary read.
The Grammy winner replied to her mother, "lol mom the AI got you too, BEWARE!" Sharing the fake images in the same post, she then clarified in the caption, "couldn't make it to the MET, had to work.

The "Daisy" singer also included a clip of her in what looks like a recording booth. While she appeared to be singing, she muted the footage, seemingly teasing new music that she's currently working on.

"Hey, that's so trippy," he admitted after the creepy moment when Shaq's eyes moved.
Wemby became understandably emotional after hearing the heartfelt messages from several previous winners who welcomed him to a club that only a select few join.

Gisele Bündchen Is 'Deeply Disappointed' by 'Irresponsible' Jokes About Marriage to Tom Brady in Netflix Roast
"As always, [Bündchen's] priority is to support her children who were affected by the irresponsible content that was broadcasted," a source exclusively tells PEOPLE
Gisele Bündchen is "disappointed" by the jokes made regarding her previous marriage to Tom Brady, during the Super Bowl champion's Netflix roast.

A source tells PEOPLE that the model, 43, is "deeply disappointed by the disrespectful portrayal of her family on Sunday evening's roast show."
The source adds, "As always, [Bündchen's] priority is to support her children who were affected by the irresponsible content that was broadcasted."

Brady, 46, was the guest of honor during Netflix's live special, The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady, at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, Calif. on Sunday, May 5. The retired quarterback took in insults from friends and former teammates, including host Kevin Hart, Julian Edelman, Rob Gronkowski, Nikki Glaser, Drew Bledsoe, Randy Moss and Kim Kardashian.

Hart, 44, first mocked Brady over Bündchen's new boyfriend, her jiu-jitsu coach Joaquim Valente. Along with Hart, Glaser, 39, also went after Brady and his divorce, mocking the football star and remarking: "You have seven rings. Well, eight now that Gisele gave hers back." Meanwhile, Brady's former teammates, Bledsoe and Edelman, also made jabs at the former couple's previous marriage.

After 13 years of marriage, Brady and Bündchen filed for divorce on Oct. 28, 2022. They share two children: son Benjamin, 13, and daughter Vivian, 10. (The NFL star is also dad to son John "Jack" Edward with ex Bridget Moynahan.)

The source adds, "This past week, Gisele has been tirelessly dedicated to aiding those in need in her home state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, which is grappling with the worst flooding in its history. In an Instagram post on May 4, Bündchen shared with her followers how they can help with the natural disaster that hit her home state. Bündchen is raising money for those affected by the natural disaster with the brazilfoundation.org for the Light Alliance Emergency Fund.

Brittney Griner Shares Experience in Russian Prison in First Cable Interview Since Coming Back to U.S.
In her first cable interview since coming back home, Brittney Griner shared details about her experience in a Russian labor camp.
When she arrived in Russia to play basketball during the WNBA off-season in 2022, Griner was arrested when cannabis cartridges were found in her luggage. She maintains that she mistakenly packed them with her clothing and is aware of Russian law.

While the mistake seemed harmless, Griner found herself detained for several months while she awaited a final sentencing. Complicating matters was the ongoing war in Ukraine, likely leading Russia’s government to be more strict toward the American athlete.

Though she was eventually sentenced to nine years in a labor camp, she was eventually freed when the U.S. government agreed to swap Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout for her. In total, she spent 10 months in detainment.
On MSNBC’s The ReidOut, Griner said she knew the war would complicate her situation and prepared for the worst.

“That changed everything,” Griner said. “Any sliver of hope that I had that we could come to some kind of agreement or a trade or something quietly, that all went out the window. When they invaded, I knew that — that was another moment of that ‘whoosh’ feeling, that sunken, just, it’s all over. I was like, ‘This is it.’ Like, there’s no way now… I was like, ‘Well, I need to get prepared for the long haul.'”

Being a Black queer woman also heightened her anxiety. Griner added that at one point, guards tried to place in a cell designated for men.
“I was terrified when I was thinking about going to that jail,” she said, “because I was like, ‘What game are they going to play?’ And I soon found out one of the games, trying to tell me to go into one of the men’s cells. And I’m like, ‘I’m not going in that cell.’ And then the other guard said something in Russian and shook his hand, and then they take me to the women’s side. And I was just like, ‘See, it’s a game, you know?’ And I knew all that was stacked against me.”

Even when placed in the proper cell, Griner still felt uncomfortable with how she was viewed in the prison.
“They definitely knew who I was, because I would hear little things like ‘the American,’ ‘the basketball American,'” she said. “And it was just, I would see the little hole where they could see you. They would lift that up all the time, all hours of the night. I would hear it go up and down and snickering and the laughing. And I’m like, ‘Ok, I’m the zoo animal today.'”

Young Jeezy Accuses Jeannie Mai Of Seeking Revenge Over Second Baby Disagreement

Rapper Young Jeezy’s divorce from TV personality Jeannie Mai has taken a dramatic turn as newly released documents shed light on the underlying reasons behind their split. According to reports, Jeezy is alleging that Jeannie’s pursuit of divorce and accusations of abuse stem from her desire to have another child, a wish he reportedly denied.

In documents obtained from the divorce proceedings, Jeezy claims that Jeannie was eager to expand their family and have another child together. However, when he declined her request, Jeezy asserts that Jeannie’s demeanor changed drastically. He alleges that she became desperate and unable to accept his decision.

The situation escalated further when Jeezy informed Jeannie of his intention to file for divorce if their marriage did not improve. In response, Jeezy claims that Jeannie sought assistance from IVF specialists in an attempt to conceive a child through in vitro fertilization, despite his objections.

Jeezy asserts that Jeannie’s actions demonstrate her inability to handle rejection and her determination to pursue her own desires regardless of his wishes. He further alleges that Jeannie has a history of volatile behavior and suggests that she is accustomed to being in control of her relationships.

Additionally, Jeezy expresses frustration over what he perceives as Jeannie’s efforts to limit his parenting time with their young daughter. He claims that he has only been allowed to spend one day and night with their daughter in April, indicating a lack of cooperation from Jeannie in facilitating their co-parenting arrangement.

Columbia University Replaces Its Commencement Ceremony With “Smaller-Scaled” Celebrations Following Protests On Campus
The main campus of Columbia University in New York, on a warm, sunny fall day.The university-wide commencement ceremony typically held by Columbia University will have a new look this year.

According to reports, Columbia is set to hold “smaller-scale, school-based celebrations” instead of its usual graduation ceremony. The institution shared that the decision was made following discussions with student representatives and comes shortly after weeks of pro-Palestinian and opposing protests on campus, which raised security concerns.
“Our students emphasized that these smaller-scale, school-based celebrations are most meaningful to them and their families,” the Ivy League university said. “They are eager to cross the stage to applause and family pride and hear from their school’s invited guest speakers. As a result, we will focus our resources on those school ceremonies and on keeping them safe, respectful, and running smoothly.”

The school added, “These past few weeks have been incredibly difficult for our community. Just as we are focused on making our graduation experience truly special, we continue to solicit student feedback and are looking at the possibility of a festive event on May 15 to take the place of the large, formal ceremony. We are eager to all come together for our graduates and celebrate our fellow Columbians as they, and we, look ahead to the future.”

Unfortunately, students will now be recognized ” individually alongside their peers” in smaller ceremonies. However, the graduation ceremony is not the only thing affected by the protests. “Class Days” and school ceremonies originally scheduled to take place at the south lawn of the Morningside campus, have been moved to Columbia’s Baker Athletics Complex.

If you’re unaware, Pro-Palestinian protests popped up on campus last month after students set up roughly 50 tents, calling for a Gaza cease-fire and for the university to end their partnership with companies profiting from the war. On April 30th, New York City police officers arrived on campus in full riot gear and forced their way into Hamilton Hall, where protesters had barricaded themselves. Not long after, about 100 arrests were made, which stirred up some tension, leading Columbia President Minouche Shafik to request police assistance on the campus until May 17th.

Pastor Keion Henderson Silencing A Church Member Has The Internet Divided

As if there weren’t enough to debate online, a video of Houston Pastor Keion Henderson has raised the question of whether or not there is a right or wrong way to worship in church.
In the video of his recent church service, Pastor Henderson can be seen leading a prayer, followed by a song on the stage. As he attempts to sing, a woman in the choir can be heard loudly crying, nearly overpowering his voice.  Henderson, seemingly annoyed by the hollering, briefly stops singing and tells the woman to “shh.” He then walks back and snaps his fingers at her, demanding that she stop the screams.

“Silence in the name of Jesus,” Henderson demands before continuing his worship song.
The viral clip has people in an uproar and taking sides. While critics say that what the pastor did was harsh, others back his actions, claiming he did the right thing as she was causing a distraction. The main argument from those slamming the pastor is that it is not God-like to stop a worshipper while they are praising the Lord, even if they are loud.

Fans of Henderson are singing a different tune, highlighting that the woman may have been causing others to miss the word due to her outburst. In Henderson’s Instagram comments, several parishioners have accused the unidentified church attendee of frequently having these types of moments in church, which points to some possibly growing tired of how she chooses to worship. She has not come forward about the moment, though Henderson does not seem to have any remorse about how things went down in the sanctuary.

Several social media reactions have shown the varying feelings surrounding Henderson’s actions.
Was Pastor Keion Henderson being rude or trying to regain order in the church?

United Methodists remove anti-gay language from official teachings on societal issues
United Methodist delegates on Thursday removed a 52-year-old declaration from their official social teachings that deemed “the practice of homosexuality ... incompatible with Christian teaching” — part of a wider series of historic reversals of the denomination’s long-standing disapproval of LGBTQ activity.

The historic vote came as delegates also approved a new definition of marriage as a covenant between “two people of faith” while recognizing the couple may or may not involve a man and a woman. That replaces an exclusively heterosexual definition of marriage and followed a debate that exposed tensions between some U.S. and international delegates.

The 523-161 vote to approve a section of the church’s Revised Social Principles took place at the General Conference of the United Methodist Church in the penultimate day of their 11-day legislative gathering in Charlotte.
It came a day after the General Conference removed its long-standing ban on “self-avowed practicing homosexuals” from being ordained or appointed as ministers. Step by step, delegates have been removing anti-LGBTQ language throughout their official documents.
But the marriage definition was approved only after debate and a compromise amendment — one of the few instances of open debate during this otherwise overwhelmingly progressive conference.

“God designed marriage to be between a man and a woman,” said Nimia Peralta from the Northwest Philippines. While the conference earlier approved a regionalization plan enabling different parts of the global church to adapt rules to their local contexts, “God’s word can never be regionalized,” she said.

The Rev. Jerry Kulah of Liberia held aloft a Bible as he said: “We do not have another Bible apart from this Bible. ... The Bible is very emphatic that we have marriage between a man and a woman.”

But the Rev. James Howell of Western North Carolina applauded the new language as being able to “embrace everyone.”
“Cynics and young adults will not listen to us talk about Jesus if we say we do not condone people they love and care about,” Howell said. “Friends, it’s time.”

The Rev. Kalaba Chali, based in Kansas, said the principles are general enough without forcing people in different cultural contexts “to do things the same way.”

The approval came only after an amendment offered by lay delegate Molly Mwayera of East Zimbabwe, who noted that many African countries do not allow for same-sex marriage. After extended wordsmithing, the assembly settled on an amended item that affirmed marriage as a sacred covenant bringing “two people of faith (adult man and woman of consenting age or two adult persons of consenting age) into union.”

It’s the UMC’s first legislative gathering since 2019, one that features its most progressive slate of delegates in memory due to the departure of many conservatives from the denomination. More than 7,600 mostly conservative congregations in the United States — one quarter of the denomination’s American total — disaffiliated because the UMC essentially stopped enforcing its bans on same-sex marriage and LGBTQ ordination.

Those churches left under a window that enabled American churches to leave with their properties, normally held by the denomination, under more favorable than normal terms. While the conference voted against extending that window to international churches, the liberalization measures approved by the conference could still prompt departures of some international churches through different means — particularly in Africa, where conservative sexual values prevail and where same-sex activity is criminalized in some countries.
The progressive momentum of the General Conference was evident from the vote Thursday. They voted on the last of a series of approvals of a wholesale rewrite of the denomination’s Social Principles — a non-binding but influential compendium of the denomination’s social stances on everything from war and peace to the environment and family relations.

The new version no longer includes this language from the previous one: “The United Methodist Church does not condone the practice of homosexuality and considers this practice incompatible with Christian teaching,” while it also urged members not to condemn gays and lesbians.

The old version said sexual relations are “affirmed only with the covenant of monogamous, heterosexual marriage.”
The new version omits this phrase and describes “human sexuality as a sacred gift” and a “healthy and natural part of life that is expressed in wonderfully diverse ways.” It doesn’t say anything about restricting sexual activity to marriage. It does say people have the right to consent to sexual activity and condemns sexual harassment and exploitation and opposes pornography and its “destructive impact.”

The new version calls for human rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity and other racial, ethnic and gender categories.
Thursday’s change is particularly significant because the statement of homosexuality being “incompatible with Christian teaching” dates back to the beginning of the 52-year-old debate on LGBTQ issues within one of the nation’s largest Protestant denominations. The phrasing was adopted on the floor of the 1972 General Conference via an amendment proposed by a delegate, added to the original draft statement that had said “persons of homosexual orientation are persons of sacred worth.”

The denomination had been revising and adding to the Social Principles for decades; this amounts to the first wholesale rewrite in many years. Other sections of the rewrite were approved earlier this week.
The drafters of the revision chose more general language because the denomination spans countries and cultures around the world, said John Hill, interim general secretary at the Board of Church and Society, at a news conference earlier this week.

“We have a church whose local contexts are dramatically different,” he said. “And so our hope was that statements that could speak theologically to these matters, but not to any specific context, could then be applied across the context of the church.”
