#MAGFAB: Issa Rae for Marie Claire - November 2023!
MARIE CLAIRE sits down with Issa Rae to discuss the SAG-AFTRA strike, how she turned her go-to drink for celebrating wins into her next business and her continued goal to invest in ventures that matter, including her south Los Angeles community.
On the SAG-AFTRA strike: “The strike was devastating. I’ve been building [a project] for five years and now it’s gone. On the [entertainment] business side, we lost some employees. That really, really sucks. But this industry is changing so much. For me it’s like, ‘Okay, but what now?’ I know that executives and networks aren’t going to be as receptive as they were to Black focused content. I’m not pivoting, but I’m just trying to be more strategic in terms of the stories that I tell and maximizing our impact.”
On her latest venture, Viarae her Prosecco: “I started experimenting with cocktails made with prosecco—whiskey and prosecco, then vodka and prosecco—and people started drinking them.” There’s also Rae’s mix of prosecco and Jameson that “gets you right…quick,” she says. “Then I was like, ‘Well, I’m giving them this one basic version, and if they’re going to try it because of me, I want it to be from me.’ This [brand] is something that is of me that I love; that I have made.”
On her haircare line with her sister-in-law Hannah Diop, Rae didn’t hesitate to test the products—from curl creams to edge control—and share what worked best: “I am proud to be the guinea pig. My hair hasn’t fallen out yet, so it’s been good. My hair will fall out before anybody else’s hair falls out—that’s the promise.”
On Rae’s first loves: Acting & Creating: “I’m a storyteller at the end of the day and if there is a story bursting out of me, somebody’s going to hear it. I’m fortunate enough to be able to have a platform where they mostly can. And I like the challenge of getting an audience invested in a story.”
On wanting to see more people of color on-screen: “I felt underserved for a period of my life coming up. When you’re a little girl thinking about performing for an audience, all you think about is, ‘Oh, my family,’ and ‘Oh, my friends.’ I don’t think I’ve ever escaped that. They are, I guess, the hypothetical people that I think about. That is my core audience and theirs are the stories that I’m mostly interested in.”
On remembering a hard lesson in finding power in advocating for the people she wants on her team: “In the past, when you’re coming up and you’re trying to sell a TV show, managers, execs, would say that it’s better to have a project clean—it’s better to not have anybody else attached, So I listened to that, and that ruined some relationships. After a while I got to the point where it’s like, ‘No, I know these people are talented and I want to fight to be able to get them a position in the larger thing.’ While I haven’t won every battle, I try to fight as much as possible to get people those opportunities that I know I would want.”
On Hollywood’s uncertainty: “I only have a foresight of what isn’t going to be. There’s certain things that I want to take advantage of outside of the industry just because I feel like [the industry] doesn’t know what it wants to be, it’s in flux. And there are no innovators anymore…I want to be able to have control of my own destiny.”
Issa Rae covers Marie Claire’s The Power Issue, which just went live across Marie Claire’s digital platforms and will be available on newsstands November 21st.
#RHOA: Noelle Robinson Had the "Best Birthday Dinner" with Cynthia Bailey & Leon Robinson
Cynthia Bailey and Leon Robinson's daughter, Noelle Robinson, is an expert when it comes to celebrating birthdays. In fact, The Real Housewives of Atlanta daughter—who currently lives in Los Angeles and dabbles in modeling—even celebrates her half birthday. So when her special day rolled around this year, it's no surprise that Noelle went all out to mark the occasion in a fittingly special way.
In a November 13 Instagram post, Noelle shared a series of photos documenting her recent birthday dinner at Nobu Malibu. The posh eatery is a go-to celebration spot for the model, who celebrated her 23rd birthday there in 2022. But for this year's special dinner, Noelle had her parents, Cynthia and Leon, as her dinner dates. "Best birthday dinner," she wrote in her caption.
"Happy birthday my love!!! YOU ARE MY EVERYTHING!" Cynthia commented underneath Noelle's caption, adding dozens of birthday-cake emoji. The accompanying photos only added to the festive vibes.
Noelle's pics showed her and her parents posing in front of the Nobu sign. The birthday girl looked glam in a lacy purple dress with hot-pink embroidery, and both of her parents looked gorgeous as usual. Leon wore a suede jacket, while Cynthia rocked a navy-blue bodysuit and knee-high boots.

Throughout the day of November 9, Noelle had shared more details from her 24th birthday celebrations. In one of several videos, Noelle put a cute, colorful cake from Milk Bar on display.
The dessert was decorated with several adorable details. A few silver disco balls, a silver "Scorpio Season" sign, and multiple colorful candles decked the top of her cake.
Noelle also posted celebratory videos of bouquets filled with chocolate-covered strawberries. One bouquet featured purple and pink-covered treats, while another had pink-covered berries with "NOELLE" written in white.
Noelle also took to her main Instagram feed to share a glimpse at her birthday outfit. To ring in 24, she wore a black satin minidress that featured a huge bow in the back. "[B]irthday girl," Noelle captioned the post, in which she also showed off her classic black heels from Christian Louboutin.
"[H]appy birthday to the most amazing daughter! I love you!" Cynthia gushed in the comments section of the post.

#HipHopNews: Nicki Minaj, Lil Uzi Vert And Post Malone To Headline Rolling Loud California 2024
Rolling Loud is slated to return to Inglewood’s Hollywood Park Grounds from Mar. 15 to 17, 2024. Today (Nov. 14), the star-studded lineup was revealed.
The festival will feature Nicki Minaj as the opening headliner on Friday (Mar. 15). She’s joined by Rae Sremmurd, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Lil Tecca, Sexyy Red, Anycia and a joint performance by YG and Tyga.
Saturday’s (Mar. 16) headline act is Post Malone. The “Congratulations” hitmaker will be supported by Summer Walker, Big Sean, Larry June and Flo Milli. The event is set to conclude on Sunday (Mar. 17) with Lil Uzi Vert. The Philadelphia native will share the stage with Don Toliver, Chief Keef, NLE Choppa, 03 Greedo, Bryson Tiller and Ski Mask the Slump God.
Rolling Loud California 2024 is sticking closely to its formula, focusing mainly on hip hop and rap acts. However, next year’s lineup also includes the noticeable presence of R&B artists like Ryan Trey and Bryson Tiller.
Tickets will be available to purchase here on Friday (Nov. 17).
Notably, Uzi is currently on the “Pink Tape Tour.” It kicked off in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Oct. 21, followed by stops in Cincinnati, Boston, Atlanta, Dallas and Denver. Coming up, the rapper is set to perform in Los Angeles, Brooklyn and Philadelphia before returning to Chicago for the finale on Dec. 4.
Meanwhile, Minaj will drop her eagerly awaited album, Pink Friday 2, on Dec. 8. She teased the project with singles like “Last Time I Saw You” and “Big Difference” earlier this year.
The rapper also covered Vogue last week, where she spoke about motherhood, the LP and her road to sobriety after struggling with substance abuse.
Minaj shared, “No one told me that this was a narcotic and this was addictive. Luckily, I was able to ground myself. Once an addict, always an addict. I feel like if you’ve ever experienced addiction to anything, which I have, you always have to think twice and three times about the choices that you make.”
Music mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs sued for rape, sex trafficking by singer Cassie
Hip hop music and fashion mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs was hit Thursday with a civil lawsuit accusing him of raping and sex trafficking the singer Cassie, his former romantic partner, over the course of a decade.
In addition to Combs, the suit names Bad Boy Records, Bad Boy Entertainment, Epic Records and Combs Enterprises as defendants.
Combs, one of the most influential and successful executives in music, founded Bad Boy in the early 1990s. He also launched a clothing label, Sean John, and developed the Ciroc vodka brand. As recently as last year, Forbes estimated his net worth at $1 billion.
“After years in silence and darkness, I am finally ready to tell my story, and to speak up on behalf of myself and for the benefit of other women who face violence and abuse in their relationships,” Cassie said in a statement about her bombshell suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.
“With the expiration of New York’s Adult Survivors Act fast approaching, it became clear that this was an opportunity to speak up about the trauma I have experienced and that I will be recovering from for the rest of my life,” said Cassie, whose legal name is Casandra Ventura.
The Adult Survivor’s Act since last November allows accusers to file civil claims of sexual abuse during a one-year window that otherwise would be barred by the statute of limitations.
Combs “vehemently denies these offensive and outrageous allegations,” his lawyer Ben Brafman said in a statement.
“Ms. Ventura’s demand of $30 million, under the threat of writing a damaging book about their relationship, was unequivocally rejected as blatant blackmail,” Brafman said. “Despite withdrawing her initial threat, Ms. Ventura has now resorted to filing a lawsuit riddled with baseless and outrageous lies, aiming to tarnish Mr. Combs’ reputation, and seeking a pay day.”
Cassie’s lawyer, Douglas Wigdor, shot back: “Comb’s offered Ms. Ventura eight figures to silence her and prevent the filing of this lawsuit. She rejected his efforts and decided to give a voice to all woman who suffer in silence.”
“Ms. Ventura should be applauded for her bravery,” Wigdor added. “No human should have to endure what Ms. Ventura has endured.”
Cassie’s accusations
Cassie’s suit says that in 2005, when she was just 19 years old, the then-37-year-old Combs lured the singer into a professional relationship by signing her to his label, Bad Boy Records.
Within several years he induced her into a sexual relationship, and introduced her “to a lifestyle of excessive alcohol and substance abuse and required her to procure illicit prescriptions to satisfy his own addictions,” the suit alleges.
The suit claims that Combs raped Cassie in her home after she tried to leave him, “blew up” another man’s car after learning of his romantic interest in the singer, and often beat and kicked her.
And it says Combs, who has seven children, “forced Ms. Ventura to engage in sex acts with male sex workers while masturbating and filming the encounters.”
“Throughout their relationship Mr. Combs was prone to uncontrollable rage, and frequently beat Ms. Ventura savagely,” the suit alleges.
“These beatings were witnessed by Mr. Combs’ staff and employees of Bad Boy Entertainment and Mr. Combs’s related businesses, but no one dared to speak up against their frightening and ferocious boss.”
Cassie’s suit is the latest legal challenge for Combs. Earlier this year, he sued Ciroc owner Diageo
for alleged racial discrimination, saying they neglected Ciroc and his tequila brand, DeLeon. The company ended their relationship in June after about 16 years.
Combs also was a close friend the rapper Notorious B.I.G., known as Biggie. He was in Biggie’s entourage, in a separate vehicle, when the rapper was fatally shot in 1997.
Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Slammed For Invading Privacy By Leaking King Charles' Birthday Call
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle face backlash after their phone call to King Charles on his 75th birthday got leaked. A palace insider called the Duke and Duchess of Sussex "total hypocrites" for not keeping the phone call under wraps.
"Harry and Meghan fight for privacy when it suits them, and yet the minute Harry gets on the phone to the King, it's in a newspaper," the source told Page Six. However, a Sussex source insisted that the couple wasn't involved in the leak in any way.
The phone call was reportedly the father and son duo's first time speaking to each other again amid their rift. "Of course Harry wants to have a better relationship with Charles. He is his father after all," the source explained.
During the phone call, which was leaked to the U.K.'s Daily Telegraph, Meghan allegedly jumped on the call. The pair's two kids Archie and Lilibet were also said to be sending a sweet video message of them singing "Happy Birthday" to their grandfather.
The tension between Harry and Charles got worse after the former released his tell-all book "Spare". In the memoir, Harry made shocking allegations against the British royal family and criticized his stepmother, Queen Camilla.
In other news related to Harry, biographer Omid Scobie claimed that Harry and Prince William's relationship is "beyond repair." The Prince of Wales allegedly "doesn't want to know" his "defector" brother. William said that his brother has become "oh so California" after being "brainwashed by an army of therapists."
As for Harry, he was reportedly "crushed" by his family who didn't update him about his grandmother. Omid added William "refuses to even properly talk with him" but has accepted "things are unlikely to change."
A recent report claimed that King Richard "was extremely busy but is polite and loves his son and his grandchildren, and not so mean that he would not take a call on his birthday." However, the source said that "there is still a long way to go to mend the rift created over many years - and the deeper issues caused by allegations in the Netflix series and 'Spare' are not healed with a phone call.
Angelina Jolie's Daughter Zahara Just Joined Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. At Spelman
As if it wasn’t heartwarming enough to see Zahara Jolie choose Spelman University as her college of choice in 2022 with full support from her mom, actress Angelina Jolie, she’s gone ahead and taken things up a notch to our glee by joining a divine nine organization in her sophomore year. The 18-year-old crossed Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. recently and there’s footage of her being presented on the ATL campus as one of the newest members.
Zahara emphatically let everyone present know she’s Zahara Marley Jolie (it seems she’s dropped the Pitt), hailing from Los Angeles, and flipped her hair as everyone in the crowd cheered on.
As mentioned, she made big news by opting to continue her studies at Spelman, and mom Angelina was by her side as she began her journey. Last summer, the Oscar winner and Zahara’s sisters, Shiloh and Vivienne, were there as she started school, and even attended a Spelman and Morehouse alumni association event in Hollywood for back-to-school season.
“Zahara with her Spelman sisters!” Angelina wrote when sharing a photo of Zahara around that time. “Congratulations to all new students starting this year. A very special place and an honor to have a family member as a new Spelman girl.”
As for her father, Brad Pitt, he expressed his excitement for her in interviews last year while promoting his film Bullet Train. It’s unclear what his relationship has been with all of the former couple’s children since they divorced in 2016 and details as to what led to the split became public.
“I’m so proud of her,” he shared with Vanity Fair. “She’s so smart. She’s going to flourish even more at college. It’s an exciting and beautiful time to find her own way and pursue her interests. I’m so proud.”
As you can see, not only is Zahara enjoying life at Spelman, she’s fully engrossed in the culture and relishing in the experience. Congratulations to her and the rest of the new AKAs over at that very esteemed institution.
Jason Momoa Is So Excited To Host ‘SNL’ That He Forgot To Wear Pants
Timothée Chalamet hosted Saturday Night Live last week. This week, it’s Jason Momoa, another cruel reminder that Dune: Part Two has been pushed back to next year. But the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom star is still excited to return to Studio 8H for the first time since 2018, so much so that he forgot to wear pants in the promo for the episode.
When cast member Ego Nwodim realizes that he’s Donald Ducking (or Porky Pigging, depending on your preference of anthropomorphic cartoon animals) it, she tells him, “Yeah, hey, we love you, but you just can’t be wearing your underwear. This is a workplace.” But Momoa is determined, as he continues to dance around the set and picks up featured player Marcello Hernandez.
SNL will be Momoa’s first time promoting the Aquaman sequel since the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, but director James Wan previously teased the film in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “What I like between this one and the first one is, you really do see the growth of Arthur,” he said. “He starts off as this kind of wanderer, and in the second one he finally has more of a direction of what he wants to do with his life.”

Sharon Osbourne claims Whitney Houston thought she was 'trying to f---' Bobby Brown
Whitney Houston, may she rest, and Bobby Brown had one of the more tempestuous celeb marriages on the books, but she really did love the "My Prerogative" singer. And she did not take kindly to any woman encroaching on her territory.
On The Osbournes Podcast , Sharon Osbourne revealed she was once caught in the crosshairs of Houston's jealousy when the legendary singer accused her of "trying to f---" her husband.
“I was hosting the [Divas Duets] for VH1, and I was at sound check, and Whitney was up on stage doing her sound check,” the Osbourne matriarch said on Tuesday's episode.
"Her little girl [Bobbi Kristina] obviously liked watching [their reality series] The Osbournes and she came up and sat next to me,” Osbourne added. “Gorgeous little thing. And then suddenly her dad came and sat [on] the other side of me, Bobby.”
That's when the "Whatchulookinat" singer asked Osbourne what she was, in fact, looking at, only posed in a slightly more blunt fashion. "And she goes, “Mrs. Osbourne, are you trying to f–k my husband?"
A shocked Osbourne sprinted down the aisle, denying any shady goings-on, but Nippy from Jersey still demanded Ozzy Osbourne's better half show Houston her wedding ring, which a mortified Osbourne even offered to give to Houston.
“I gave her the ring, threw it at her," she recalled. "I said, ‘I promise you, I’m not interested in your husband. I’m married.’ And then she goes, ‘Alright then. OK.'”
But there were no hard feelings. Osbourne added that, afterwards, whenever she saw Houston, "she was just a very nice lady."
Reps for Brown did not immediately respond to EW's request for comment.
Beyoncé Reportedly Eyed For Next Vegas Sphere Residency
Last month, U2 extended their residency at the Las Vegas Sphere following rumors that the $2.3 billion venue was still seeking other acts to perform. Now, sources are saying Beyoncé might be next.
The New York Post reported that James Dolan has been in talks with the Lemonade star’s team about a residency after U2’s run, which ends on Feb. 18. She has taken tours of the Sphere with her manager/mom Tina Knowles and her husband Jay-Z; she is allegedly asking for $10 million to produce the show, which is approximately the same U2 received. Beyoncé would also receive a healthy portion of ticket sales; U2 were reportedly guaranteed millions for each concert.
According to the Post, execs have also considered Bon Jovi, Paul McCartney, and Lady Gaga.
Threads users can now opt out of automatically sharing posts to Facebook and Instagram
Meta now lets Threads users avoid automatically sharing their posts with its other apps. When activated, the opt-out feature prevents Meta’s Twitter clone from sharing posts to Instagram and Facebook without user consent. Software engineer Alessandro Paluzzi spotted early signs of the privacy toggle earlier this month.
Threads users can turn off automatic cross-platform content sharing by heading to their profile page, selecting the menu at the top right, then Privacy > Suggesting posts on other apps, and toggling off Instagram and Facebook individually. Note that changing this feature only prevents your posts from being used in cross-promotions; you’ll still see other people’s Threads posts on Instagram and Facebook, irrespective of your privacy settings.
Some Threads users were upset about Meta automatically sharing their content from the nascent X competitor, mainly because people often use the apps to connect with different crowds (for example, Threads for news and politics with strangers, Facebook for extended family and old friends). TechCrunch highlighted several comments from people describing Threads posts automatically posted on other platforms as odd clickbait seemingly “designed to get comments” by stripping bold statements of context. In October, the company said it was “listening to feedback” in response to a Threads user’s complaint about automatic sharing to Meta’s more established platforms.
Meta is no stranger to using its existing stockpile of social apps to turbocharge its newest ones. It used easy onboarding and promotion via Instagram to vault Threads to the fastest app to reach 150 million downloads. Although growth appeared to slow after that, CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently said Threads had tallied nearly 100 million users. The Facebook founder said he sees a path for the Twitter clone to reach the one-billion user milestone.
Justin Timberlake Rallies with Anna Kendrick, Jessica Biel & *NSYNC at 'Trolls' Screening Following Britney Spears' Memoir Revelations
Justin Timberlake was surrounded by friends and supporters when he stepped out for his first red carpet appearance since Britney Spears‘ memoir The Woman in Me.
The 42-year-old actor and musician was discussed at length within the pages of the memoir, leading to questions about how he was responding.
On Wednesday (November 15), he presented a united front on the red carpet at a screening for his new movie Trolls: Band Together.
Justin posed for pics with costar Anna Kendrick outside the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, Calif. He was also supported by wife Jessica Biel.

Emmy Award winner Jimmy Kimmel is back as the host for the upcoming 2024 Oscars ceremony, marking the late-night star’s fourth time fronting the show. Emmy nominee Molly McNearney will also return to serve as an executive producer for the second consecutive year in a row.
The “Jimmy Kimmel Live” host previously led the 2017, 2018 and 2023 telecasts. The 2017 ceremony produced the now infamous “La La Land” and “Moonlight” best picture screw-up. Kimmel will now sit alongside other four-peaters such as Whoopi Goldberg and Jack Lemmon. The only people to host more times are Johnny Carson (5), Billy Crystal (9) and Bob Hope (11).
“I always dreamed of hosting the Oscars exactly four times,” said Kimmel in a statement. McNearney adding that she’s “especially honored to be part of the Oscars team this year.”
“We are thrilled about Jimmy returning to host and Molly [McNearney] returning as executive producer for the Oscars,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President. “They share our love of movies and our commitment to producing a dynamic and entertaining show for our global audience. We are deeply grateful to Jimmy, Molly and their teams for their incredible creativity and partnership and for going on this ride with us again.”
“After his triumphant return to the Oscars stage last year, we are honored to have Jimmy back to guide us through one of the most beloved celebrations in entertainment,” said Craig Erwich, president of ABC Entertainment, Hulu and Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals. “He is such a valuable member of our Disney family, and we could not be more appreciative of him and his entire team.”
The 2023 Oscars ratings saw a bump in viewership, attracting an average audience of 18.8 total million viewers, up 13% from the previous figures. It outperformed the 2023 Grammys and Emmys by more than double. The ceremony earned a 4.0 rating in the adults 18-49 key demo, pushing it to three-year highs in both total viewers and demo — up 5% since 2020.
This year’s awards-contending films offer a treasure trove of populist titles, most notably Warner Bros’ “Barbie” and Universal Pictures’ “Oppenheimer.” The two movies were the stars of the “Barbenheimer” summer craze that took over movie theaters and pop culture. Both are expected to be heavy favorites in the best picture race alongside acclaimed movies such as “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro” and “Poor Things.”
This year’s celebration of film achievements will be executive produced by Raj Kapoor, Katy Mullan and Hamish Hamilton. Kapoor will also serve as the showrunner. Other team members include creative director Kenny Gravillis, production designers Misty Buckley and Alana Billingsley, red carpet show executive producer David Chamberlin, and red carpet creative consultants Lisa Love and Raúl Àvila.
Last year’s 95th ceremony earned a nomination at the Primetime Emmy Awards for outstanding variety special (live). Kimmel earned an additional nom for his late-night show in the talk series category, bringing his total career noms to 20. The results will be revealed in January.
The 96th Oscars will be held at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday, March 10, 2024.
