#MAGFAB: Pharrell Williams Covers GQ’s September ‘Hype’ Issue

In a new cover story for GQ’s September Hype issue, Pharrell Williams invites style editor Noah Johnson into his studio, as well as to his hometown of Virginia Beach, and his new home in Paris.Through a series of intimate conversations, the two discuss the first months of Pharrell’s reign as Creative Director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear,  Virgil Abloh’s lasting impact,  and what he has planned for the future.

Pharrell admits that when the Louis Vuitton job was first broached, it seemed to come out of the blue. “It wasn’t an interview or anything,” Pharrell remembers. “It was like, ‘Will you accept this position? Will you accept this appointment?’ I’m looking at the water and I’m just like, ‘What?’”

Pharrell had been in talks with folks at LVMH about who might succeed Virgil Abloh – offering names and sharing opinions – but he did not realize that he himself was being considered. He expected the choice to be Nigo, his longtime friend and collaborator who currently heads LVMH brand, Kenzo. “I’ve been championing him for a minute. And whenever me and Alexandre would talk about LV, we would always just talk about different people. I’ve always been in the background, just advising. I never thought that it would be me.”

Louis Vuitton CEO, Pietro Beccari, on appointing Pharrell
“After the untimely departure of Virgil Abloh, I don’t think I could have chosen a  traditionally trained designer,” Louis Vuitton CEO, Pietro Beccari, tells GQ. “I needed someone who was again connected to the arts, who could touch the hearts of people through music and fashion, but also collaborations.” He adds, “He has 13 Grammys and even Oscar nominations. One could say he has a midas touch. So, as a creative director, while it’s an experiment, I think it will be a successful one.”

…On Virgil Abloh’s impact: “It’s like we’re collaborating in spirit”
The studio that Pharrell built to record in the LV office is the same spot where Virgil Abloh had installed a DJ booth. It is a brutal reality that this huge opportunity for Pharrell has only been possible because of the tragic and untimely death of Abloh. “I always knew Virgil was special,” Pharrell says, adding that he’s maintained the connection to Abloh through Louis Vuitton, and some Abloh-designed pieces remain in the line. “It’s like we’re collaborating in spirit,” Pharrell says. And he has plans to continue to develop the house’s relationship to skateboarding, something that was initiated by Abloh. “I’ll always pay homage to him.”

…On the future of Louis Vuitton
“The house has aspirations to grow exponentially, but that growth is not just numbers,” he says. “Growth and taste, growth and setting the bar, growth and exceeding standards. The money follows that. We’re not going to just do things just to make money, or else we’ll just keep making the same belts and sh-t. That’s not what I was brought here to do. I was brought here to shake the tree. That’s how you get the sweetest apples.”

#RHOA: Oh? Kenya Moore Says She Wasn’t Paid During First Month Filming RHOA

Kenya Moore has made her mark on Real Housewives of Atlanta since joining the show in Season 5. Without Twirl, we wouldn’t have Gone with the Wind Fabulous. Kenya Moore haircare as a drumline would make even less sense than it already does. And we wouldn’t have some of the show’s most dramatic moments (and worst instances of hosting ever). If only Twirl could use her reality TV chops to save the sinking Season 15.

Kenya recently appeared on the Reality with the King podcast to gush about her time on RHOA. She dropped a few bombshells, particularly about her first season on the show. Don’t let Bethenny Frankel in on this tea or she’ll take Twirl’s story and, somehow, make it about HER and her latest crusade against Bravo. That’s the last thing any of us need, along with another TikTok haul from B.

Kenya Moore deserves a backdated check
Kenya revealed that when she joined RHOA in Season 5, she wasn’t immediately paid for filming. Now THAT’S some tea against the network. It took until NeNe Leakes’s “Women In Success” event for Kenya to officially earn her peach, which was a month into her filming experience. Girl, you better have those receipts and get that money.

Twirl apparently gave producers an ultimatum to pay her after a month of free labor. “They begged me [for] one more scene,” she explained. “I remember saying, ‘If I shoot this scene and you don’t make me a housewife, you cannot use me for anything else. You cannot use any of my footage.’ They agreed to it and made me a housewife after.” And that’s a boss move, but shame on the network for not paying Kenya for her A+ shade-throwing from day one. At least she’s managed to keep her peach for so many years to follow.

Real Housewives of Atlanta airs Sundays at 8/9c on Bravo.

California store owner, mother of nine, shot and killed over a Pride flag displayed in her shop

Deputies responded to the Mag Pi clothing store at 5:00 p.m., where owner Laura Ann Carleton was pronounced dead at the scene, the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department said in a press release. The suspect, who was not identified, fled the scene on foot.
“Through further investigation, detectives learned the suspect made several disparaging remarks about a rainbow flag that stood outside the store before shooting Carleton,” the press release said.

The suspect was armed when confronted by deputies and was killed in "a lethal force encounter," the sheriff’s department said. An investigation is ongoing.

The Mag Pi store website described Carleton as a mother of nine and has been "married to the same man for 28 years." Carleton, who went by Lauri, studied at the Art Center School of Design and had a long career in fashion, including 15 years as an executive at Kenneth Cole, the site said.
Mountain Provisions Cooperative, a local grocery store, said in a Facebook post Saturday that Carleton had been pivotal in helping organize a free store after a blizzard hit the area earlier this year.

"Lauri was a pillar in our community, an immovable force in her values for equality, love, and justice," the post said. "If you knew Lauri you know she loved hard, laughed often, and nurtured and protected those she cared about."

The store encouraged people to "fly your flags in honor of Lauri."
Lake Arrowhead LGBTQ+ said on Instagram that Carleton did not identify as a member of the queer community but was an advocate “for everyone in the community.”

“Lauri’s unwavering support for the LBGTQ+ community and her dedication to creating a safe space within her shop touched the lives of many,” the organization wrote in an Instagram story. “Her untimely passing in a senseless act of violence has left us all deeply saddened.”

Comments on the organization’s social media offered condolences to Carleton’s family and paid tribute to her contributions around the Lake Arrowhead community. Some said that the Pride flag at Mag Pi helped make them feel welcome and safe in the area.

“Bridesmaids” film director Paul Feig was among those in the comment section, saying that Carleton would be “sorely missed.”
“Lauri was such a wonderful person, so full of life and love,” Feig wrote. “She always made us laugh and always laughed with us. Her commitment to the community in general and the LGBTQ community specifically was just one of her many wonderful qualities.”California store owner, mother of nine, shot and killed over a Pride flag displayed in her shop

#RIP: Emmy-winning 'This Is Us' actor Ron Cephas Jones dies at 66, co-stars react

This Is Us star Ron Cephas Jones has died. He was 66.The Emmy winner, who took home the Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series award twice for his role on the NBC drama, died due to a “long-standing pulmonary issue,” his representative said in a statement to Yahoo Entertainment.

“Throughout the course of his career, his warmth, beauty, generosity, kindness and heart were felt by anyone who had the good fortune of knowing him,” the statement read. “He began his career at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe and his love for the stage was present throughout his entire career, including his recent Tony-nominated and Drama Desk Award-winning performance for his role in Clyde’s on Broadway. Ron’s inner-beauty and soul was evident to the huge audience from his multi-Emmy award winning performance on This is Us.” He is survived by his actress-singer daughter, Jasmine Cephas Jones, best known for her role as Peggy Schuyler in the original Broadway production of Hamilton.

Jones portrayed William on This Is Us, the biological father of Sterling K. Brown’s character Randall. In a heartfelt Instagram post on Saturday, Brown paid tribute to his TV dad, writing in part, “The world is a little less bright. Brother, you are loved. And you will be missed.”

Jones’s television credits also included roles on shows like Mr. Robot, Looking for Alaska, Truth Be Told, Law & Order: Organized Crime, and Better Things.

He also appeared in movies like Dolemite is My Name, Dog Days, The Holiday Calendar, and Half Nelson.
In May 2020, Jones, a lifelong smoker, received a double lung transplant due to his chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, per his 2021 interview with The New York Times. The actor spent two months on and off a ventilator, learning how to eat and breathe again. He initially did not want to go through with the surgery, he said, due to the possibility that he would need an oxygen tank for the rest of his career.

“I was in total denial,” Jones said at the time. “I told myself that it would pass, or that I was just getting older. I was afraid and didn’t want to change what I wasn’t ready to change.”

He called the idea of not being able to perform again “worse than death.”
In addition to Brown, Jones’s other This Is Us co-stars reacted to the loss on Instagram.

Mandy Moore shared a photo of her and Jones from the show’s finale, calling him “pure magic as a human and an artist” and saying that working with him was “the greatest gift.”

The Celebs came out to Attend Robert De Niro's 80th Birthday Party

Robert De Niro marked his 80th birthday by gathering his celebrity friends for a lavish dinner party. The "Casino" star hit the milestone on Thursday, August 17 and hosted a bash at swanky Italian restaurant Locanda Verde in New York City for friends including Sir Paul McCartney - who attended with his wife Nancy Shevell - as well as fellow actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Uma Thurman and De Niro's "The Godfather Part II" director Francis Ford Coppola.

"Star Wars" creator George Lucas also attended the bash along with director Martin Scorsese, movie veterans Bette Midler and Christopher Walken as well as former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, civil rights activist Al Sharpton, illusionist David Blaine, and Alec Baldwin with his wife Hilaria.

De Niro was joined by his girlfriend Tiffany Chen and their baby daughter Gia - the actor's seventh child - who was born in April.
Earlier in the day, the actor's adopted daughter Drena De Niro shared a sweet tribute to him on Instagram. She reposted a portrait of De Niro shared by actress Debi Mazar and wrote, "Happy 80 you know who!"

It comes after a tough few weeks for the actor and his daughter following the death of Drena's 19-year-old son Leandro De Niro Rodriguez in July. De Niro's grandson was found dead at his apartment in New York City on July 2 and autopsy results showed the teenager had a number of illegal substances in his system when he passed away.

The New York City Medical Examiner told the New York Post newspaper's Page Six column Leandro had fentanyl, bromazolam, alprazolam, 7-aminoclonazepam, ketamine and cocaine in his system at the time of his death, which has been ruled an accident.
After the tragedy, Drena - who was adopted by the actor during his marriage to her mother Diahnne Abbott - mourned the loss in an emotional post on Instagram. She wrote, "My beautiful sweet angel. I have loved you beyond words or description from the moment I felt you in my belly."

"You have been my joy my heart and all that was ever pure and real in my life. I wish I was with you right now. I wish I was with you. I don't know how to live without you but I'll try to go on and spread the love and light that you so made me feel in getting to be your mama . You were so deeply loved and appreciated and I wish that love alone could have saved you. I'm so sorry my baby."

Sage Steele claims Barbara Walters 'tried to beat me up' in the green room of 'The View'

Sage Steele has claimed that Barbara Walters tried to assault her after a segment on Barack Obama in The View's greenroom.
On Thursday, the former SportsCenter anchor told Megyn Kelly about the alleged 2014 incident during an episode of The Megyn Kelly Show podcast.

"It was Barbara, Whoopi [Goldberg] and myself in the dark green room off to the side," Steele began. "I was probably about four feet from the wall and the trash can, and Barbara was standing over here in front of me. She just started to back up toward me and looked at me and got close and elbowed me, and it pushed me back into the wall and the trash can. I was like, ‘What did [she] just do to me? This 140-year-old woman just tried to like tackle me.'"

Walters, who created, produced and co-hosted The View for 17 seasons, passed away in 2022 at age 93. At the time of the incident Steele is describing, she would have been about 85 years old. A representative for the Walters estate told Yahoo, "I find this impossible to believe and uncharacteristic of Barbara!"

Steele alleges that The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg was a witness to the event. "Some of the producers saw it. Whoopi saw it," the 50-year-old sportscaster claimed.

"And Whoopi was like, 'Come here.' She was great. She pulled me aside in her little area and she’s like, ‘Don’t you let her do it.' And I’m like, 'Am I in a movie right now?' One of the legends in this industry just tried to beat me up!"
Steele is not the only celebrity to have claimed to have had an aggressive encounter with the late star. In June, Rosie O'Donnell told The Hollywood Reporter that she'd had a screaming match with Walters, with whom she had a friendship before being hired. She said the dispute stemmed from Walters not supporting her amid another feud — with Donald Trump — and it escalated when O'Donnell made a comment about Walters' daughter.

Steele also used her time on The Megyn Kelly Show podcast to discuss her recent departure from ESPN. In 2022, the TV host sued the network and its parent company, Disney, for allegedly violating her contract and her free speech. The lawsuit came after Steele made contentious statements about ESPN’s COVID policy and former President Obama.

The ex-host informed Kelly that she’d had assignments taken away and that she was compelled to apologize before being allowed back on air. "I did not want to apologize," Steele said. "I fought. I fought and I begged and I screamed, and I was told that if I want to keep my job, I have to apologize. … I knew there was a line somewhere. I just didn’t know where it was until I crossed it."

Lil Nas X documentary set to premiere at Toronto Film Festival

Back in September 2022, Lil Nas X embarked on the “Long Live Montero Tour,” the first of his career. The excursion took the artist across North America, Europe, Australia, and South America for several months, coming to a close in Colombia last March.

It was reported by Deadline that the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) will premiere a new documentary that chronicles 60 days of the aforementioned tour. Titled Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero, the film, which is directed by Carlos López Estrada and Zac Manuel, will be shown as part of the event’s Gala program.

“Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero is a triumphant ode to the extraordinary power of self-expression, music, and identity,” said TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey. “In this groundbreaking documentary, we witness Lil Nas X challenging boundaries and reshaping the artistic landscape. The film’s captivating journey underscores the profound impact of Lil Nas X, who fearlessly brings audiences together through the universal language of music. We are thrilled to host Lil Nas X at TIFF this year.”

The “Old Town Road” talent continues to sail off the release of his platinum-selling debut LP, MONTERO, which saw collaborations alongside Jack Harlow, Doja Cat, Elton John, Megan Thee Stallion, and Miley Cyrus. Since then, he’s continued his momentum via viral cuts like “STAR WALKIN’,” “Late To Da Party (F**K BET)” with YoungBoy Never Broke Again, and the leaked “DOWN SOUF H**S” with Saucy Santana.

As previously reported, Lil Nas X shared some information with fans about his upcoming sophomore effort. “It’s mostly planning now. I could easily just release music, but I have to build moments around this s**t,” he explained during a Twitter Q&A. “I have to go bigger than before!”

Shemar Moore Beams Over Baby Daughter’s First Word

*Shemar Moore is a new “girl dad” and it seems as if his 6-month-old child, in turn, is a daddy’s girl.
The “S.W.A.T.” star and his girlfriend, Jesiree Dizon, welcomed their baby girl Frankie Meleine in January, and the doting parents were recently filming when Frankie, in a pink onesie, began giddily babbling her way toward a moment every parent anticipates. In the clip shared by Shemar, Dizon is holding their baby as the actor tries coaxing the little one to say “Dada.” The cute babbling continues through several more attempts, until suddenly… Frankie touched her father’s face and said, “Dada.”

Dizon let out an astonished scream. Shemar captioned the clip: “I’m officially a DA DA!!! My life is complete!! Friends, family, Jesiree, and Daddy’s lil Miracle… Frankie Muthaf***n Moore… I love you, Jesiree… thank you!!! I love you all!!!!!”
Back in February, the 53-year-old actor took Frankie to visit her late grandmother

In another Instagram post, Shemar held Frankie as they took a photo alongside Jesiree at the gravesite of Marilyn Joan Wilson-Moore, who had passed away about three years prior. The tombstone bore the message: “This house is my son’s home.”
Moore captioned the post: “Shemar, Jesiree, Frankie, and the spirit of Grandma Marilyn….. Mom’s dream was for me to become a father and give Momma some grandbabies… it took me a minute, but Momma’s dream is now reality!!”

He further cited how he couldn’t have dealt with his mom’s passing without Dizon, adding: “Jez, I love you and am so grateful… Daddy Loves Frankie… I love and miss you every day, Grandma Marilyn R.I.P. 2/8/20.”

Lizzo’s Current Dancers Stand In Solidarity With The Singer

Last month, several of pop star Lizzo’s former dancers filed a lawsuit against her claiming they were sexually harassed and working under hostile conditions. Explicit stories of events had fans wondering if the rumors were true. Now, Lizzo’s current dancers speak up in support. In a heartwarming letter posted on Instagram they wrote:

“We have been so honored to share the stage with such amazing talent. The commitment to character and culture taking precedence over every movement and moment has been one of the Greatest lessons and Blessings that we could possibly ask for,” the post said.

“THANK YOU to Lizzo for shattering limitations and kicking in the door way for the Big Grrrl & Big Boiii Dancers to do what we love! You have created a platform where we have been able to parallel our Passion with a purpose!” it continued.

Ron Zambrano, the attorney representing the former dancers who filed the lawsuit, responded in a statement Friday saying it was “understandable that current employees would gush about her. They want to keep their jobs and maintain access to her global celebrity. But the comments change nothing about the allegations in the lawsuit.”
Zambrano said his firm has heard from at least 10 former Lizzo employees who’ve come forward with similar stories of abuse and harassment about the singer since the suit was filed Aug. 1.

“Some of them will certainly be actionable,” he said. “Lizzo’s job now is to try to do everything she can to limit the damage to her brand and save her career. Our job is to vigorously litigate this case on behalf of the plaintiffs based on the facts and we’re confident the truth will prevail over the spin.”

Shannon Sharpe To Join Espn’s ‘First Take’ For NFL Season

Stephen A. Smith has a new debate partner. The NY Post reports former FS1 personality Shannon Sharpe will be headed to ESPN to take on Stephen A. on Mondays and Tuesdays during the NFL season. Sharpe comes over after ending his partnership with Smith’s former co-host Skip Bayless.

Sharpe is also expected to have a new home for his Club Shay Shay podcast. ESPN has not offered a comment.
At the end of the June 13 episode of Undisputed, Sharpe thanked all of the team members for FS1 and tearfully spoke highly of his time with Skip Bayless.

“Skip Bayless. You fought for me, brother. I’m here because of you. You’ve allowed me to share the stage with you. You’ve allowed me to share the platform. I’m going to cry in the car, but I’m not going to cry now. The opportunity that you gave me, to become what I became, I’m forever indebted to you. I’ll never forget what you did for me. You’ve helped me grow more than you’ll ever know. One more thing before you go, Skip. One more thing. All I ask, is when you lay your head of that pillow at night, know I gave you everything I had. I gave you everything I had.”

Aaron Judge Debuts ‘Double Gum’ Cleats At Batting Practice After Jordan Brand Announces Signing

Shortly after announcing his signing with the Jordan Brand, Aaron Judge’s exclusive cleats debuted during batting practice.
Images of the bubblegum pink cleats were first shared on Instagram by Jordan Brand PE designer Ryan Smith. Judge’s “Double Gum” Air Jordan 1 Lows are derived from a bubblegum chewing ritual the slugger practices during baseball games.

“Let’s play a game,” Smith captioned the post. “Pop 2 pieces of gum at the top of the first inning; get a hit, keep your gum. Strike out, and you have to refresh, and pop 2 new pieces. Goal at the end of the game is to have an old tough piece of gum. That’s how you know you’ve played well, it’s a game inside a game.”

According to Smith, Judge shared the game during his first meeting with the brand.
“These PE’s are a nod to Judge’s competitive spirit,” he added.

The New York Yankees have a stringent uniform policy, so it’s unlikely that Judge will have the opportunity to wear the cleats during official gameplay. He was seen wearing the “Double Gums” during batting practice before Friday’s game, sporting matching gloves. The shoes are pretty sweet, so hopefully, we see Judge rockin’ them at other batting practices.
