#MAGFAB: Keke Palmer for The Cut

Keke Palmer Is the Internet’s Sweetheart But the multi-hyphenate is more than just the Queen of Meme.

Keke Palmer grips the false lashes on her eyelids with two fingers and slowly peels them off her skin. She’s had a long day, and it’s nearly 7 p.m.
The sun in the window behind her is blaring over a palm tree without any sign of eventually making its descent somewhere behind the horizon. And yet, Palmer has endured multiple flight delays from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, had a glamorous hours-long photo shoot, found herself at the center of Twitter discourse about her relationship, and still made it home in time to feed her new baby his early-dinner bottle. “Yup, he’s asleep,” she says, looking over playfully at her 4-month-old son, Leo.

About that discourse: Palmer’s motherhood recently became an uninvited topic of conversation online. Last Wednesday, while she was photographed and interviewed for this cover, a video circulated of Palmer, clad in a sheer black dress with a bodysuit underneath, getting serenaded by Usher at one of his Las Vegas residency concerts. Darius Daulton Jackson, the father of her child, saw the video and tweeted his criticisms of Palmer for her outfit choice, later doubling down on his stance when her fans swarmed his replies. While on set and by the time we spoke, Palmer hadn’t yet engaged, but internet bystanders rallied around her, forming a sort of virtual shield attempting to protect her and, in turn, shunning him.

“I’ll be honest, I think before I even had the baby, I was really actually quite self-conscious,” she tells me when I ask how her headspace feels. “After having my baby, I’ve gotten so much more powerful. We’re going to lean into this new body, and I think that is the whole aura of what’s happening with me in this big boss era as I come into my 30s, and I have my baby boy, and I’m just continuing to spread my wings as a young woman.”

Even though the 29-year-old actor and producer finds herself in an entirely different life stage from me, it’s impossible to shake the feeling that we grew up together or that we have some sort of shared history. Not in a traditional sense, of course, considering she’s been a movie star since the tender age of 10, but by way of having a front-row seat to her organic matriculation through life, from project to project. She starred as a strong-willed spelling-bee champ in Akeelah and the Bee, a double-Dutch savant on the Disney Channel movie Jump In!, and a teen fashion executive on True Jackson, VP, and many of us who were once precocious little girls watched a young Palmer on the screen with awe as she evolved into the powerhouse we know her as today. By the time she was getting Oscar buzz for roles in more grown-up fare, like Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers (based on a true story originally reported in this magazine) and Jordan Peele’s Nope (a New York Times critic’s pick that won her widespread acclaim and an invitation to the Academy this summer), we became acquainted with Palmer in her role as a serious, well-adjusted, fully fledged actor. And, of course, along the way was her music career, which she’s still working on, anchored by her song “Bottoms Up,” a pivotal moment in the Zeitgeist for teenage girls everywhere. (She released a sequel of sorts to the track last year.)

In the same way we’ve come to know her, she feels as though she’s come to know us: “I do feel like America’s little sister, little cousin. I feel very much so related to everybody,” she tells me. “I’m like that second cousin that you see every two years at the family reunion.”

Now, as she branches off into newer, more experimental ventures with KeyTV, an avenue for Palmer to support other young creatives of color, and her podcast, Baby, This Is Keke Palmer, on which she has interviewed guests like Vice-President Kamala Harris (Palmer asked her to clarify both if she does have a silk press and what policies should be developed to deal with the maternal mortality crisis), John Stamos, and fellow child stars Aly and AJ Michalka, Palmer is entering her “big boss era,” as she’s dubbed it.

Online, Palmer is generally unafraid to discuss potentially taboo topics, like acne and breast milk, while also finding ways to inject humor into whatever she’s speaking about. From “Sorry to this man” to “You know it’s your girlllll,” she has kept the culture quenched with a steady stream of delightful sound bites, which inevitably become endearing memes. Admittedly, as a self-described citizen of the internet, she loves this too: “When people see themselves in me enough to repost a meme or use a GIF, it really humanizes me in a way that I think sometimes feels lost in my life,” she says. “So I really do feel appreciative of being a meme.”

Relatability and authenticity seem to bolster nearly every sentence Palmer speaks, giving a feeling that her words are unrehearsed, direct lines from her heart. This is perhaps why the public feels so protective over her. It’s what keeps her audience engaged, the comments section of her Instagram dynamic, and her podcast’s guests eager to bare it all. It’s what makes her — though she’d never title herself as such — the internet’s sweetheart.

#RHOA: The Ladies Confront Shereé Whitfield About Never Receiving Any She by Shereé Gear
The Real Housewives of Atlanta are not happy with Shereé Whitfield. As you can see in this 90-second, EXCLUSIVE sneak peek at the July 16 episode of the Bravo series, everyone’s claiming that their She by Shereé “stuff was taken back at the reunion.” If you recall, Shereé gifted all the ladies with various products from her clothing line at the season 14 reunion, but what you didn’t see on camera was Shereé’s assistant taking the items back once filming wrapped.

“I didn’t take [the items] back. Whoever did, that ain’t got nothing to do with me,” Shereé tells Kandi Burruss. Kandi then asks Sheree if she thinks they’re all “making it up”, and Shereé says, “Yes I do.”
“I didn’t get [any] She by Shereé gifts,” Drew Sidora tells Shereé, but Shereé still doesn’t believe them — she insists Marlo Hampton got “15 shirts” and other items, so they must be lying.

“I got a lot of stuff, hats,” Marlo confirms. But after footage from last year’s reunion showed a man rolling out a rack full of items from the clothing line, Drew takes to her private confessional and says, “There were people with Shereé who said, ‘No, you can’t have the bag.’ And I saw them taking things and putting them back on the rack.”

We have no idea why this will become a topic of conversation in Sunday’s episode, but based on the rest of the preview, it seems to come up after Shereé openly discusses some sort of lawsuit involving Drew. Shereé must come for Drew as a form of retaliation for starting rumors about her clothing line

“You and I talked about [the She by Shereé stuff]. That confiscation conversation already happened,” Drew says. “We moved forward, correct? So now here we are, and what I’m talking about is something as far as a lawsuit. That is serious. And that is not cool for you to go and talk about something that’s happening to me and my family and never come to me personally.”

“It doesn’t feel good does it?” Shereé asks Drew, to which Drew replies, “So you’re trying to teach me a lesson? You’re trying to be a tit for tat girl? Girl, bye. We already talked about it. So you are just incapable of moving forward. So how are you doing a trip about healing when you can’t heal your damn self?”

#HipHopNews: J. Cole Comes Out At Drake's Montreal "It's All A Blur Tour" Stop
In a great surprise that electrified the crowd, Drake, during the “It’s All A Blur Tour” stop at Montreal’s Bell Centre on Thursday (July 14), welcomed none other than J. Cole to the stage. The excitement was palpable as the acclaimed rapper, rocking a bright yellow shirt claiming, “The game has changed, you have been warned,” made his way through the sea of fans.

Before his entry, Cole joined Drake onstage, performing the Dreamville CEO’s 2014 hit “No Role Modelz.” This nostalgic moment left the audience in shambles, a testament to their longstanding musical camaraderie.

Earlier this year, in April, the duo offered a unique joint performance at the Dreamville Festival 2023 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Noteworthy is their track record of showing up at each other’s concerts, a tradition dating back to their first collaboration over a decade ago.

It was a memorable night in 2021 when Drake unexpectedly showed up at Cole’s Miami gig, delivering a three-song performance from his Certified Lover Boy album. Drake’s spontaneous tribute to Cole that night — “You are genuinely, without a doubt, one of the greatest rappers to ever touch a mic” — continues to echo in the rap world. Check out a video via wordonrd on Instagram.

Despite a decadelong friendship, the pair has only a few collaborations, including the popular “In The Morning” from 2010 and “Jodeci Freestyle” from 2013. However, their mutual artistic respect is well-documented, with both artists sharing beats for their respective projects and consistently celebrating each other’s work onstage.

These rap icons’ unexpected union exhilarated fans at the Montreal show. The two rappers have always shared a mutual respect. The night was another memorable chapter in their shared musical journey, leaving attendees and fans worldwide eager for their next collaboration.

Alabama woman Carlethia “Carlee” Nichole Russell who went missing has returned home

An Alabama woman who went missing after telling a 911 dispatcher that she saw a toddler walking alone on the side of an interstate has returned home, authorities said.

Carlethia “Carlee” Nichole Russell, 25, had been missing since Thursday night, when she called 911 and told a dispatcher that she saw the child on the side of Interstate 459 South. After the call, Russell stopped her vehicle to check on the toddler and called a family member who lost contact with her, though the line remained open, according to the Hoover Police Department.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Russell’s vehicle and some of her belongings – including her phone – but no sign of her or the child, according to police.
At 10:45 p.m. Saturday, the Hoover 911 center received a call that Russell had returned home, Hoover police said in a Saturday news release.

“Hoover Fire medics responded to the scene to assess Carlee and transported her to a local hospital for evaluation,” the news release states. Police also responded to the scene to investigate, according to the release.

It’s unclear where Russell had been since Thursday and no further details were provided. Additional information “will be provided when it becomes available,” police said.

The police department is “very happy” that Russell has returned home safely, Hoover Police Chief Nicholas Derzis told CNN affiliate WBRC.
“We wanted her to come home safe and sound – and we’ll hope that’s what happened here,” he said. “And I couldn’t be more excited, and I hope the community feels the same way.”

“The first thing is to give Carlee and family a little time to get themselves back together,” he said, WRBC reported.

“I know it’s been a tough experience for them. When we think it’s time to sit down and have a conversation with Carlee and try to get some facts, we’ll do that.”
News of Russell’s disappearance sparked a frenzied 48-hour search effort across the area, with police offering a reward of $25,000.

Derzis said that at times up to 50 or 60 police officers were working on the case. “There are times you get overwhelmed, the story kept getting bigger and bigger,” he told WBRC.

Hoover, a prominent suburb of Birmingham, is located just south of the city.

Tom Holland Creates Online Uproar With Intimate Gay Sex Scene On 'The Crowded Room'
Tom Holland finds himself trending on Twitter after his intimate scene on "The Crowded Room" goes viral on social media. The British actor sent fans into a frenzy after he was seen having a steamy gay sex in the latest episode of the Apple TV+ show.

In the eighth episode of the thriller series, Tom's character Danny Sullivan, who is dealing with a mental disorder similar to Dissociative Identity Disorder, appeared as a woman named Ariana, one of his alternate personalities. At one point, Tom's Ariana could be seen grinding sensually on a male partner while dancing to music at a club.

The two ended up taking their steamy session to the next level as they hooked up in the bathroom. Tom's character could be heard moaning while taking it from behind.

Unsurprisingly, fans were having mixed feelings about the scene. "Tom Holland said if [Zendaya Coleman] gonna be kissing two men in a movie, ima have a gay sex in a movie and I'm not mad about it," a fan tweeted, referring to Tom's girlfriend Zendaya's upcoming movie "Challengers" in which she's involved in a threesome. "I love Tom and all but if he was my man I would cry myself to sleep," one other said.

Some others praised Tom for his versatility with one writing, "I really love tom holland's diversity on a serious note like he's so open to all roles and that's what we need in Hollywood these days." Echoing the sentiment, one other fan said, "Tom Holland actually is one of my favourite actors so versatile."

However, some fans didn't think it was a good idea for Tom, who is best known for his role as Spider-Man in MCU, to take such role. "I get acting is acting and you should choose to play what role you want. But you have to be careful in this new generation. Kids that love Spiderman (tom holland) are going to beg there parents to see him in any movie because he's Spiderman in their eyes," a critic noted. One other opined, "Why would they make the Spider-Man boy into a gay man in another movie like they couldn't find anyone else for that role?"

"The Crowded Room" follows Danny Sullivan, a young man who is arrested on suspicion of committing a bone-chilling crime. He details his alternate personality disorder during interviews with an interrogator, played by Amanda Seyfried.

James Cameron shuts down 'offensive' rumors that he's in talks to make a film about OceanGate's Titan disaster

James Cameron denied speculation that he's in talks to make a movie about OceanGate's Titan submersible.
Cameron called the rumor "offensive" and said he would never make a movie about the Titan.
Five people were killed after the submersible imploded during a June trip to see the Titanic.

James Cameron says he has no plans to make a film about OceanGate's Titan submersible, which imploded during an excursion to see the shipwrecked Titanic in June.

The "Titanic" director shared the news on Saturday, seemingly responding to media reports speculating about a potential film. The Sun reported on July 13 that a streaming network had approached Cameron to tell the story of the five men who died on the submersible.

"I don't respond to offensive rumors in the media usually, but I need to now. I'm NOT in talks about an OceanGate film, nor will I ever be," Cameron wrote in a tweet.

Speculation around Cameron's involvement in an OceanGate film came one month after the submersible was reported missing on June 18. A multi-day search ensued but ended on June 23 when the US Coast Guard and OceanGate said the Titan's five passengers were dead. Reuters identified the passengers as OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, Hamish Harding, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Shahzada Dawood, and Suleman Dawood.

Cameron, who's traveled to the Titanic wreck 33 times, has been vocal about OceanGate and his insights into the implosion.
Last month, Cameron told ABC News that he saw parallels between the Titanic's captain and Rush, who bypassed concerns and warnings about the submersible's safety.

"A number of the top players in the deep-submergence engineering community even wrote letters to the company saying that what they were doing was too experimental to carry passengers and that needed to be certified and so on," Cameron told the outlet.

He later told Good Morning America he and several engineers wrote a letter to OceanGate officials to voice their concerns.
Last week, OceanGate announced that it's suspending "all exploration and commercial operations." On Friday, OceanGate took down its social media pages, including LinkedIn and Facebook.

Gabby Douglas, three-time Olympic gold medalist, announces 2024 comeback to competitive
Three-time Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas announced her return to competitive gymnastics on Thursday in an Instagram post.
"Hey guys long time no post," the 27-year-old wrote. "As you all know I stepped back from the socials and in that time I did a lot of journaling, reflecting, soul searching and found myself back where it all began…

"I wanted to find the joy again for the sport that I absolutely love doing. I know I have a huge task ahead of me and I am beyond grateful and excited to get back out on the floor and even more grateful for all of your support and love. it truly means so much. There’s so much to be said but for now…. let's do this."

Douglas added the hashtag "2024" to the end of her post – possibly signaling her intent to compete in the Paris Olympics next year.
Douglas won two golds at London 2012, including in the all-around event, and added a team gold to that at the Rio Games in 2016.

Her return means that each of the three previous winners of Olympic gold in the all-around event will now be aiming for Paris, after Simone Biles (Rio 2016) and Sunisa Lee (Tokyo 2020, which took place in 2021) were confirmed as registrants for the U.S. Classic at the start of August by USA Gymnastics.

49th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships - Day NineGymnastics star Simone Biles returning to competition in August in first meet since 2020 Olympics

Douglas is not on the participants list for the U.S. Classic.
Earlier this month, Biles tweeted that she is "excited to get back out on the competition floor," after USA Gymnastics had announced on June 28 that Biles was on the entry list for the Classic.
Lee, 20, wrote in a Wednesday Instagram story that she is "still in and out of the gym a lot" as a result of a kidney illness that cut short the final year of her college career at Auburn.

The U.S. Classic takes place on Aug. 5.

Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. to announce retirement as president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition

Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr. is expected to step down as president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. In 1996, the activist founded the prominent nonprofit organization in Chicago, Illinois to pursue civil rights and social justice issues.

According to Politico, Jesse’s official announcement will take place on Sunday (July 16). It will be made at the organization’s annual convention in the city. The outlet noted that his successor will also be announced, and Vice President Kamala Harris will serve as the keynote speaker for the event.

In 2017, the reverend was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. “He’s had physical challenges, but he never stopped fighting,” Jonathan Jackson, his son, said. “He’s been fighting for civil rights since 1961. He didn’t give up when there were forces against the Voting Rights Act, or forces against the Equal Rights Amendment, or addressing priorities at home or peace abroad.”

Throughout his time as an activist, Jesse has been one of many well-known faces fighting for civil rights. In 1965, he marched in Selma, Alabama after “Bloody Sunday.” The 81-year-old has led protests to desegregate theaters and restaurants and was an aide to the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

After learning of the retirement announcement, Rev. Al Sharpton, a friend of Jesse’s, released a statement. “The resignation of Rev. Jesse Jackson is the pivoting of one of the most productive, prophetic, and dominant figures in the struggle for social justice in American history,” Sharpton stated. “It was my honor since my mother brought me to him at 12 years old to serve as the youth director for the New York chapter of Operation Breadbasket, down through the last decade, to have been a student and protégé of his.” He added, “Therefore, we think of him retiring, but rather that he has planted and nurtured seeds that are growing beyond his own organization.”

Kevin Hart And Mike Epps Bury The Hatchet After Yearslong Comedy Feud
Kevin Hart and Mike Epps are done with their internet back-and-forth after putting their issues to bed for good. The two comedians have done their fair share of addressing some of their grievances with each other in the comment section of Instagram since at least 2018.

But now, it seems as though they have both waved the white flag, signaling an end to their feud. Hart posted a photo of him and Epps with smiles plastered on their faces on Friday (July 14). “So happy that me and my comedy brother [Mike Epps] were able to settle our differences and look at the bigger picture. [I’m] looking forward to building and doing amazing things in the future! Life is too short…. Let’s all live, love, & laugh,” wrote the Ride Along 2 star.

The Next Friday standout responded with a comment that read, “Growth is real, lil bro. I look forward to what’s to come. Let’s tear s**t up.” Some of their past digs included Epps saying that he did not find his comedy peer funny. Hart hit back, accusing the Indiana native of being bitter and seemingly envious of his success, according to E! News. Like their process of making amends, details of the root of their beef remain unknown to the public.

In the comments, fellow stand-up comics DeRay Davis, Michael Blackson, and Earthquake chimed in on the end of the beef. “Amen. We’re not rappers,” wrote Earthquake. “Me and Katt next lol. Pray for me,” joked Blackson. And Davis wrote, “What I always wanted.”

Last weekend, the two men joined forces as they helped revive BET’s “ComicView.” Live tapings of the comedy show took place in Las Vegas during Hart’s weekend of birthday festivities. Comics who hit the stage included Harlem actress Bresha Webb, DC Young Fly, “In Living Color” star Tommy Davidson, and T.I., to name a few. Epps handled hosting duties and is also a co-executive producer alongside Hart and BET executives Tiffany Williams and Angela Aguilera. A release date for the full new episodes has not been announced yet.

Andre Watts Dies: Groundbreaking Classical Music Pianist Was 77

André Watts, one of the first Black superstars in classical music, died on Wednesday at his home in Bloomington, Ind. He was 77 and died of prostrate cancer, according to his wife.

Watts had an electric stage presence, often moving to the music with his head and feet, drawing criticism from the more conservative critics. But his technical prowess overcame those quibbles and launched him into the upper echelons of concert halls.
In 1963, he won an audition to appear with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic as part of the nationally televised series of Young People’s Concerts. He was 16-years-old, but his performance that day was hailed, and he soon received a bigger boost.

Bernstein invited him to make his formal Philharmonic debut, substituting for pianist Glenn Gould. That went over well, and his career was assured.

His mother was a dominant influence in his success. She worked as a receptionist at an art gallery to help pay for his piano lessons, enforcing a strict practice regimen.
In 1964, the year after his debut with Bernstein, Watts won a Grammy Award for most promising new classical recording artist.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Brand Watts, a stepson, William Dalton; a stepdaughter, Amanda Rees; and seven step-grandchildren.

Suspect arrested in connection to the death of Robert De Niro's grandson
A suspect has been arrested in connection to the death of Robert De Niro's grandson, Leandro De Niro-Rodriguez, Yahoo Entertainment can confirm. The 20-year-old woman, Sofia Haley Marks, is allegedly known as the "Percocet Princess" and was taken into custody on federal drug distribution charges. She's expected to appear in court on Friday.

Yahoo reached out to a rep for the Oscar-winning star, but did not immediately receive a response.
Leandro's passing was confirmed by his mother, Drena De Niro. The 19-year-old aspiring actor was found dead on July 2 in Lower Manhattan. While a cause of death has not officially been determined, Drena said on social media it was an accidental overdose.

"Someone sold him fentanyl-laced pills that they knew were laced yet still sold them to him so for all these people still f***ing around selling and buying this s***, my son is gone forever," she wrote in an Instagram comment.

Earlier this week, Drena shared another tribute post to her son, writing, "Missing you hard my Wild Boy Leo. I understand you better every day .. You were and will always be a gift."

After news broke of Leandro's passing, his legendary grandfather issued a statement
"I'm deeply distressed by the passing of my beloved grandson Leo," Robert shared. "We're greatly appreciative of the condolences from everyone. We ask that we please be given privacy to grieve our loss of Leo."
Drena is Robert's eldest daughter with his ex-wife, Diahnne Abbott.

Earlier this month, Leandro was laid to rest in New York City. In addition to his famous grandfather, actors Christopher Walken, Michael Imperioli and Harvey Keitel paid their respects.

‘Deadpool 3’ Filming Stopped Due To Sag-Aftra Strike

Just days after the Marvel fanbase was excited to see Wolverine walking next to Deadpool for the upcoming Deadpool 3, the entry of the title hero and X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe has hit a halt. Deadpool 3 has stopped filming due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

SAG-AFTRA joints the Writers Guild of America on the picket lines. Deadpool 3 was set to star Ryan Reynolds and Huge Jackman. According to Variety, Jennifer Garner was set to join the film as Elektra.

The SAG-AFTRA union, consisting of approximately 160,000 individuals in various entertainment fields, such as actors, announcers, hosts, DJs, stunt performers, and broadcast journalists, is advocating for fair wages and better working conditions. With the rise of artificial intelligence and streaming platforms, the union entered negotiations attempting to agree to the June 30 expiration date. Talks ceased on July 12.

Chris Brown’s Dog Attack Lawsuit Gets Rescheduled To December 2023

Despite a small victory in a lawsuit against him, Chris Brown should be cautious before claiming triumph.
According to court documents, Brown’s legal team has requested a delay in the trial date for a dog bite lawsuit. They have asked the Los Angeles Superior Court to move the trial from September 2023 to December 2023. The argument presented by Brown’s legal team is that the housekeeper who filed the lawsuit would not suffer any harm due to the extension of the trial date.

Additionally, the legal team says the housekeeper who sustained the dog bite is presently undergoing treatment for her injuries through her worker’s compensation claims. This situation has hindered Brown’s team from acquiring crucial evidence necessary to advance with the trial. As a result, the judge overseeing the case approved the motion request.

In 2020, Patricia Avila filed a lawsuit against Brown, claiming that one of his dogs attacked her sister, Maria, as they were cleaning his home. Allegedly, the dog  “viciously attack” Maria as she was emptying the vacuum in the backyard.

According to Patricia, she purportedly rushed outside and discovered her sister in a distressed state, covered in blood, and desperately seeking assistance. It was Brown himself who dialed 911, as relayed by Patricia. She further described Maria’s injuries, including wounds around her eye, bites on her leg, and a significant portion of skin missing from her arm. As a result, Maria had to be hospitalized for several days and underwent two surgical procedures.
