#RHOA: Kenya Moore Shares Big News About What's Next for Her Family

Moore Manor may have a new inhabitant soon! When chatting recently with The Daily Dish, The Real Housewives of Atlanta cast member Kenya Moore opened up about her potential plans to maybe welcome a new pet into her storied Atlanta home.

Bravo fans know that Kenya is a certified dog-lover. The haircare mogul has been loud and proud about her affection for pups, and she's been a devoted dog mama. As such, she knows her way around a pet-care routine as does her little girl. Kenya told The Daily Dish that she's a pro at feeding, grooming, and being an all-around devoted caretaker for her beloved animals.

Kenya has also passed her love for four-legged creatures onto her little one, Brooklyn Doris Daly. The four-year-old "loves animals," and "loves helping animals," the Atlanta mam told Bravo.

So, now Kenya is thinking of growing their family with a new pooch: "I'm thinking about getting her another dog... maybe like a golden retriever."

Kenya went on to share that getting her daughter a dog goes hand-in-hand with teaching her how to be a responsible young lady.

"I'm looking to teach [Brooklyn] to be a stronger person who is independent and an independent thinker. Someone who appreciates the value of hard work." Kenya explained. "That's why I make her do chores now. If there's something that she wants ... I purposely don't spoil her. Everything that she gets is because she deserves it, and because she did something that she was supposed to do or she behaved in a certain way."

Kenya went on to share that while she wants her daughter to learn from her, she also hopes that Brooklyn will "eclipse" her. "I want her to be better than me, whatever that looks like, in twenty years," she sweetly said. "Whether it's being a young entrepreneur or following her passions."

In addition to animals, Kenya explained that Brooklyn has an affinity for fixing things. "She's so fascinated with everything that has to do with fixing things, even when it comes to the house," Kenya said. "She loves to fix! She's a fixer — and that includes people's lives. So I want her to just be a better version of me. I want her to stay happy in this protected place of being happy."

In the meantime, Kenya has said that her daughter is already surpassing her in one area. Back in January, she revealed: "[Brooklyn]  is in a[n] international school, so she is speaking almost fluent Spanis. She has far surpassed me in speaking.”

Beyoncé, Rihanna, And Taylor Swift Landed On Forbes’ Richest Self-Made Women List For 2023

Forbes recently dropped the Richest Self-Made Women list and a lot of popular musicians were at the top.

Rihanna reigned among the musicians at No. 20 — as she headlined the Super Bowl earlier this year. Oh, and she also runs the Fenty Beauty brand, which reportedly doubled in value. There’s also her Savage x Fenty lingerie company. Her reported net worth is $1.4 billion and has a self-made score of 10, according to the publication.

Taylor Swift followed close behind at No. 34 and has a net worth of $740 million. She’s set to bring in way more with her record-breaking The Eras Tour, which recently announced a Latin American leg, and led to a large-scale Ticketmaster controversy. She is also working on her first feature directing job.

Queen Bey is also featured on Forbes’ list, with her net worth at $540 million and a ranking at No. 48. Between currently embarking across Europe on her Renaissance World Tour and a recently-announced Balmain collaboration, she has her hands in quite a few successful industries. She also purchased the most-expensive home that has ever been sold in California.

Both Swift and Beyoncé earned self-made scores of 8.

Other notable female musicians on the list include Madonna at No. 45, Céline Dion at No. 56, Dolly Parton at No. 59, and Barbra Streisand at No. 61.

Taylor Swift Celebrates Pride Month, Addresses “Harmful” Anti-LGBTQ Legislation in Chicago Speech

The post Taylor Swift Celebrates Pride Month, Addresses “Harmful” Anti-LGBTQ Legislation in Chicago Speech appeared first on Consequence.

Taylor Swift rang in Pride Month during the first Chicago stop of “The Eras Tour” with an impassioned speech about LGBTQ rights, calling her blockbuster stage show a “safe space” for her queer fans.

“On this tour, I get to look out into the most stunningly beautiful, brilliant crowds of people who are living their authentic lives,” Swift said. “They are loving who they want to love, they are identifying how they identify, and allies who get to support them in and celebrate them in that… And this is a safe space for you. This is a celebratory space for you.”

Though she admired the “acceptance, peace, and safety” of her concerts, Swift acknowledged that such love and tolerance aren’t universal. “You can’t talk about Pride Month without talking about pain,” she said. “There, right now, and recently, in recent years, there have been so many harmful pieces of legislation that have put people in the LGBTQ and queer community at risk. It’s painful for everyone, every ally, every loved one, every person in these communities, and that’s why I’m always posting, ‘This is when the midterms are. This is when these important key primaries are.'”

Swift continued, “Because we can support as much as we want during Pride Month, but if we’re not doing our research on these elected officials — Are they advocates? Are they allies? Are they protectors of equality? Do I want to vote for them?” Watch her full remarks below.

Swift’s “The Eras Tour” is the most in-demand live show of the summer, according to StubHub. In August, the artist will bring the tour to Mexico and South America.

Tennis Great Naomi Osaka is PREGNANT and Reveals the Sex of Her First Baby

Game, set, match! Tennis ace Naomi Osaka has revealed that she's expecting a baby girl.

Naomi, 25, took to Instagram with the big reveal, sharing photos from her baby shower. The athlete is seen standing in the middle of a flurry of pastel pink and purple flowers and balloons and resting her arm on a giant pink mushroom prop, while a sign behind her reads, "A little princess is on the way!" She captioned the photo set with a smiling face and two pastel hearts.

In a candid Feb. 21 chat with People, Naomi said she knew the baby's sex in advance but did not reveal it to her rapper boyfriend, Cordae, 25. "I've been preparing, but he doesn't know the gender yet, only I know," she revealed, adding, "So it's not like I can build out the room or anything."

She continued, "I'm just kind of winging it. That's kind of the key motto in my life a little."

The four-time Grand Slam singles champion had announced her pregnancy in January, shortly after withdrawing from the 2023 Australian Open. At the time, Naomi shared an intimate sonogram image, expressing her renewed love for the sport during her hiatus.

"The past few years have been interesting to say the least, but I find that it's the most challenging times in life that may be the most fun," she wrote. "These few months away from the sport has really given me a new love and appreciation for the game I've dedicated my life to."

"I realize that life is so short and I don't take any moments for granted, everyday is a new blessing and adventure," Naomi continued. "I know that I have so much to look forward to in the future, one thing I'm looking forward to is for my kid to watch one of my matches and tell someone, 'that's my mom,' haha."

With motherhood just around the corner, however, Naomi does plan to make a return to the court as early as next year.

"I'll see you guys in the start of the next one cause I'll be at Aus 2024," she shared. "Love you all infinitely."

Keke Palmer hilariously reveals her favorite curse word, and fans are in tears

One of Keke Palmer’s not-so-hidden talents is that she memes so doggone well. If the camera is rolling and she’s mic’d up, there is an absolute chance that the actress is going to deliver a viral moment. Such was the case when she appeared on the popular YouTube variety series “The Terrell Show.”

The latest episode of host Terrell Grice’s show premiered on Friday (June 2), and already today (June 3), the talented force that is Ms. Palmer has fans in tears from laughter. During the “I Know You F**king Lying” game segment, the 29-year-old animatedly revealed that she and Samuel L. Jackson share the same favorite curse word: motherf**ker.

“I just think it’s so, ‘Yeah, motherf**ker,’ yeah, it’s so good,” said Palmer as Grice and those off-camera erupted into laughter. “It’s so good, you put it on anything,” she added before literally acting out the various ways it can be said. She continued, “You can do it comedy. You can do it sad. You can do it dramatic. You can do it so many ways! You can even do it like… what is the clown man in all the Marvel/DC comics?” she asked before enthusiastically putting her twist on the villainous Joker saying the word.

Veteran actor Jackson is well known for dropping motherf**cker in his film work, so much so that it has become a bit of a trademark of his brand. But as told to Vanity Fair, his love of using the epithet is not just to get a rise from audiences. “I stuttered for a long time, and it actually did help me stop,” he told the publication in a 2019 interview. “The word gave me something to focus on and released the pressure, and it really helped me get the rest of the sentence out. I’m not real sure why, but it’s easy for me to pronounce. It was spontaneous on how I discovered it — it was the word that hit me, and the word that kind of helped me stop stuttering with the d-d-d’s and b-b-b’s.” The excitement that Palmer exhibited while using the word makes it evident that she simply loves to add a little razzle-dazzle to her sentences.

TLC's T-Boz says Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes would have been the 'female Kanye West'

“TLC Forever” took about 2½ years to create and about 30 years to percolate.

The new documentary that delves into the triumphs and tragedies of the trio who crafted nine Top 10 hits – was there a radio station in 1999 that didn’t spin “Unpretty” and “No Scrubs” in relentless rotation? – lands Saturday on A&E and Lifetime (8 p.m. ET/PT) with an affecting wallop.

Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas guide viewers through the group’s early days as baggy-clothed stars whose fresh blend of hip-hop and pop helped solidify Atlanta’s standing as a music capital, their massive success with albums “CrazySexyCool” and “FanMail” and the tragic death in 2002 of member Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes.

In between the headlines are reality checks about health, abortion, births, adoptions, restaurant affiliations, grueling tour rehearsals and everlasting friendship.

Watkins shared some insights about “TLC Forever” – which repeats at 5:30 p.m. (ET/PT) on Sunday and streams on Lifetime – and why she and Thomas “are not going away.”

T-Boz talks about the severity of her health challenges

The frank Watkins reminds early in the film that doctors said she wouldn’t live beyond 30. Born with sickle cell anemia, her life has always included the intervention of medicine and treatment. But cellphone footage of her in a hospital room five days before the launch of TLC’s Celebration of CrazySexyCool tour in 2021 is jarring.

Watkins, 53, said she decided to share the personal footage – and talk more extensively about her condition, as well as the benign brain tumor she had removed in 2010 – because she’s “in a different place in my life.”

“Maturing over the years and realizing how many things I have triumphed over makes you start reminiscing, like, dang, I got through that and that?” she says. “I just thought I might as well tell people so they’ll understand, and hopefully it will help someone.”

TLC kicked off a summer tour with Shaggy, En Vogue and Sean Kingston on Friday, and Watkins says her regimen includes a massage therapist to make sure her blood properly circulates, stretching, holistic vitamins and inhaling oxygen before and after the show.

Her children, Chase, 22, and Chance, 7, will join her – Chase created the Anela Beauty line and is handling TLC’s makeup for the tour – which makes road life more palatable.

“Just being able to have them with me is a blessing,” she says.

Why Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes would be the 'female Kanye West'

Toward the end of the two-hour documentary, Watkins sits with Thomas and jokes that if Lopes, who was killed in a car accident in Honduras, were alive today, “she’d be the female Kanye West.”

Indeed, vintage footage throughout the film spotlights Lopes’ fierce personality and blunt commentary about everything from her desire to stretch creatively from TLC to her inflammatory relationship with former Atlanta Falcons football player Andre Rison, whose mansion she set on fire.

Watkins laughs affectionately when asked to elaborate on her Kanye comment.

“I said that because Lisa was always just saying things. If she had Twitter fingers, she’d be all over the place and have something to say about everything and not care. She’d be making all of the shocking comments,” Watkins says. “And Kanye was the only comparison I could think of about what my sister would be like now.”

TLC’s legacy still has more chapters

Still recognized as the most successful U.S. female group in music history, TLC receives plenty of flowers from peers including Questlove, Missy Elliott, Jermaine Dupri and Dave Grohl.

The Foo Fighters frontman is a friend whom TLC met overseas, but more importantly, he has a unique viewpoint on grief, having lost band members Kurt Cobain and Taylor Hawkins.

“He totally can sympathize with what we’re going through,” Watkins says.

But along with that string of hits – “Waterfalls,” “Creep” and “What About Your Friends” still conjure good vibes – and regular live performances, TLC has more to do, as Watkins and Thomas assert in the documentary.

A new album is unlikely – 2017’s self-funded “TLC” was tagged as their last – but Watkins says there is always room for new TLC music, including for a Broadway play about their history currently brewing.

She is characteristically resolute when she declares, “Just know that we’re not going away.”

Jonah Hill welcomes first baby with girlfriend Olivia Millar

Superbad actor Jonah Hill is a father! The 39-year-old and his girlfriend Olivia  Millar recently welcomed their first baby, his reps confirmed.

The news comes after his sister Beanie Feldstein married her longtime girlfriend Bonnie-Chance Roberts on May 20, although Jonah did not appear in any pictures.

Olivia, a co-founder of online vintage site Chasseresse with her sister Raychel Roberts, was pictured with a baby bump earlier in March as she went shopping in Los Angeles. She was also seen wearing a sparkling ring on her engagement finger, sparking rumors that the two were set to wed.

Jonah and Olivia were first pictured together in Santa Barbara in September 2022. He was previously engaged to Gianna Santos before the two ended their relationship in October 2020. The actor was also linked to surfer Sarah Brady, after he picked up the sport, but he shut down claims they were engaged in 2022.

In 2018 Jonah spoke openly about his decision to lead a healthier lifestyle, sharing that he began to "understand how much [it] hurt” to be called “fat and gross and unattractive” early in his career.

“I’m under construction like we all are, you know what I mean? We’re all just trying to figure it out," he said.

On Instagram in 2021 he posted shirtless pictures and told fans he had never taken his shirt in a pool until his mid-30s. "Probably would have happened sooner if my childhood insecurities weren’t exacerbated by years of public mockery about my body by press and interviewers,” he wrote via Instagram.

“So the idea that the media tries to play me by stalking me while surfing and printing photos like this and it can’t phase [sic] me anymore is dope. I’m 37 and finally love and accept myself. This isn’t a ‘good for me’ post. And it’s definitely not a ‘feel bad for me post.’ It’s for the kids who don’t take their shirt off at the pool. Have fun. You’re wonderful and awesome and perfect. All my love."

It's been a week of love and good news for the family, as it also emerged this week his younger sister Beanie had wed her girlfriend of five years.

Beanie and Bonnie met in 2018, working on the adaptation of How to Build a Girl, and married at Cedar Lakes Estate, a summer camp in Massachusetts.

The camp, a cherished place deeply intertwined with Beanie's family history and their love story, was a natural choice for their fairytale wedding which saw Beanie wearing a custom Gucci gown that was vintage yet modern, that incorporated Beanie's love for bows and a tribute to her mother's wedding dress from 1975.

For Bonnie, they sought to redefine bridal suiting and the final pick was a stylish, whimsical, and completely unexpected bridal suit.

Ja Morant Suspension: Adam Silver Says NBA Will Announce Decision Of Suspension After The Finals

Ja Morant remains suspended indefinitely by the Memphis Grizzlies after appearing on social media with a gun again, and it sounds like some significant discipline from the NBA could be on the way.

When asked about the Grizzlies star during his pre-NBA Finals news conference, Commissioner Adam Silver said his office had discovered "a fair amount of additional information" on Morant and would have already made a decision about him had it not been for the playoffs:

"In terms of the timing, we’ve uncovered a fair amount of additional information since I was asked about the situation. We probably could have brought it to a head now, but we made the decision — and I believe the players association agrees with us — that it would be unfair to these players and these teams in the middle of this series to announce the results of that investigation.”

Silver went on to say the Morant decision will be announced "shortly after the conclusion of the Finals." He also said an individual player's history is considered while determining a player's discipline, which probably isn't good news for Morant.

Ja Morant's backstory won't help him with the NBA

The All-Star was suspended by the league for eight games earlier this year after he went on Instagram Live while holding a handgun at a strip club. That incident followed reports of multiple gun-related incidents involving Morant.

The initial suspension was presented by the Grizzlies and the NBA as an opportunity for Morant to work on his mental health, something the player himself discussed when he returned. Here's how Silver described Morant's behavior after being sidelined in the statement announcing the suspension:

"He has expressed sincere contrition and remorse for his behavior. Ja has also made it clear to me that he has learned from this incident and that he understands his obligations and responsibility to the Memphis Grizzlies and the broader NBA community extend well beyond his play on the court."

Apparently, the lesson didn't take for Morant. He was seen on Instagram Live once again holding a gun on May 14 and was suspended indefinitely by his team before the day was over.

Morant responded with his own statement of apology, as well as a series of cryptic Instagram posts so concerning they resulted in police officers being sent to his home for a welfare check.

Meanwhile, Silver appeared on television to say he was "shocked" by Morant's latest incident and promised another NBA investigation. When asked Thursday if he felt Morant's initial punishment was too light given what happened after, Silver conceded the discipline didn't have the effect the league hoped while maintaining he, along with the NBPA and the Grizzlies, still want to support him:

"If it had been a 12-game suspension instead of an eight-game suspension, would that have mattered? I know it seemed based on precedent, and he's represented, and we want to be fair in terms of the league, it seemed appropriate at the time. That's all I can say. Maybe by definition to the extent we've all seen the video that it appears he's done it again, I guess you could say maybe not.

"But I don't think we yet know what it will take to change his behavior. Same thing I said at the time; he seems to be a fine young man. In terms of my dealings with him, I think he's clearly made some mistakes, but he's young, and I'm hoping now — once we conclude at the end of our process what the appropriate discipline is, that it's not just about the discipline, it's about now what we, the Players Association, his team and he and the people around him are going to do to create better circumstances going forward."

It appears likely Morant's second suspension will be significantly longer than eight games. What happens after will be up to him.

Remy Ma Celebrates Birthday With Star-Studded Prohibition-Themed Party

Remy Ma celebrated her birthday with a surprise Prohibition-themed party sponsored by Hennessy at Casa De Lobo in Jersey City, NJ. Dripped out in a shiny, sparkling gown, the Bronx legend lit up the entire room upon entry. She was surprised by many long-time friends and fellow New York rap icons Fabolous, Maino, her husband, Papoose, and the Terror Squad family, Fat Joe.

The Tunecore executive surprised the “s” when he brought in Remi Ma’s favorite rapper to perform a few classics in her honor.

“It’s the Queen born day,” Papoose said on his Instagram post as he stood next to the night’s surprise. “Right now, I got with me her favorite rapper. We’re about to surprise the s**t outta her. Real people do real things.”

As the door flew open, Ma$se walked in, wishing Remy Ma a happy birthday, to her pleasant surprise. The two danced and rocked out as Ma$se performed two of his many classic hits, “Can’t Hold Me Down” and “What You Want.” Remy took over the hook for the latter performance.

“Felt good to see her genuinely surprised & happy,” said Papoose in her IG caption. “She’s made my born day special so many times. This was well deserved.

From surprise performances to heartfelt speeches, Remy Ma’s Prohibition-themed party lit up the Bronx queen’s face for the entire night.

Jemele Hill Denies Leaving Spotify: ‘My Podcast Hasn’t Been Cancelled’

Jemele Hill is setting the record straight amid reports that she is taking her “Unbothered” network of podcasts off of Spotify.

Bloomberg reported Friday that the “Unbothered” network, including her own show “Jemele Hill is Unbothered,” was looking for a new home, as the company “has reconsidered its expensive podcasting strategy.” Bloomberg cited “sources familiar with the conversation” in reporting that both parties are “negotiating the terms of her separation, which will result in the end of her show and network, at least on Spotify.”

The report comes four years after Spotify paid $200 million for Joe Rogan’s podcast, after which Hill said she would like to see Spotify give that much money to Black podcasters.

“What I would like to see is for them to hand $100 million to somebody who is Black,” Hill told The New York Times in 2019.”

But Hill claims she is continuing her podcast per her original Spotify contract, and that she never asked for the same deal as Rogan.

“A lot of what’s been reported just isn’t true,” Hill tweeted. “My podcast hasn’t been cancelled. I never asked Spotify for $100M. This s— is truly comical.”

Hill was an ESPN personality who exited the company in 2018 amid political controversies. In 2017, she called former President Donald Trump a white supremacist and urged advertisers to boycott Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones after he suggested that the team could bench players who “disrespect the flag,” comments that got her suspended by the network.

She joined The Atlantic later that year, and launched her podcast at Spotify in 2019.

Dwayne Johnson Formally Announces His Return To ‘Fast And Furious’ Franchise With New Standalone Hobbs Film

Dwayne Johnson formally announced that he and his character Luke Hobbs are returning to the Fast and Furious franchise.

After his absence from the franchise, fans were left stunned by a surprise cameo by Johnson at the end of Fast X. Johnson had famously stepped away from the films amid an ongoing feud with Vin Diesel, who plays one of the main characters, Dominic Toretto.

Johnson explained in an Instagram post that the two had set their beef aside, and he will return to the franchise.

“Luke Hobbs will be returning to the Fast & Furious franchise,” he captioned the video. “Your reactions around the world to Hobbs’ return in Fast X have blown us away.”

He continued, “The next Fast & Furious film you’ll see the legendary lawman in will be the HOBBS movie that will serve as a fresh, new chapter & set up for FASTX: Part II.”

In the post, he addressed the issues between him and Diesel, saying they’ve set their problems aside.

“Last summer @vindiesel and I put all the past behind us. We’ll lead with brotherhood and resolve – and always take care of the franchise, characters & FANS that we love,” he continued. “I’ve built my career on an “ Audience First” mentality and that will always serve as my North Star.”

Johnson also congratulated everyone involved with Fast X, which has been a box-office success.

“Congratulations to my Fast Family & Universal Studios on the global success of FAST X and as always, Hobbs & @SevenBucksProd are motivated to help take the Fast franchise to new and exciting places for fans worldwide.”

Hobbs will receive a standalone film that will be released in between Fast X and what was supposed to be the end of the franchise in Fast X: Part II. Universal Pictures did release any plot details. Johnson will serve as a producer.

Former Playmate Sues Bill Cosby for 1969 Sexual Assault

*Bill Cosby is facing another sexual assault case, this time from a woman who claims the comedian raped her in 1969.

According to TMZ, the latest accuser is Victoria Valentino, a former Playboy model who previously accused Cosby of drugging and sexually assaulting her over four decades ago after she had dinner with him.

The statute of limitations on sexual assault cases has been temporarily lifted under a California law — paving the way for Valentino’s civil suit. It comes two years after Cosby was released from prison after his sexual assault conviction was overturned.

In the lawsuit, Valentino alleges that she and her friend were hanging with Cosby when he offered them pills, and when she started to feel dizzy, he took them to a nearby office. The woman claims she became unconscious and was assaulted after waking up.

Here’s more from TMZ:

In her suit, Valentino says she told Cosby she wanted to go home and he escorted her and her friend to a car, offering to drive them home. She says she felt nauseated and dizzy in the backseat as Cosby instead drove them to his office, where she claims a sexual assault occurred.

Valentino says her friend passed out on a couch in Cosby’s office and she sat down on another couch and closed her eyes … and when she opened them she saw Cosby sitting next to her friend, staring with a “predatory intensity” and an erection.

In the docs, VV says she tried to turn Cosby’s attention away from her friend and he walked over to her. She says she tried to stand up but her legs wobbled and buckled. She says Cosby sat down next to her, unzipped his pants and forced his penis in her mouth. She says he then stood her up, turned her around and forced his penis into her vagina.

The woman claims she was drugged during the assault, making her incapable of consenting to the sexual activities that she was allegedly subjected to.

Per TMZ, “Valentino says she’s suffered severe humiliation, mental anguish, embarrassment, anger, emotional distress and loss of earnings,” the outlet writes, and she’s seeking financial compensation.

In a statement, Cosby’s rep, Andrew Wyatt, said… “Media needs to vet Victoria Valentino cautiously and carefully — because she has changed her alleged accounts of sexual abuse at the hands of Mr. Cosby over 10 to 15 times.”

Wyatt continued,  “It’s unfortunate that the statute of limitations were put in The Constitution to protect victims and those who are accused — and it seems that our political figures are caving to being click baiters and accumulating likes as opposed to vetting these allegations made by alleged accusers and moving swiftly to create these look back windows — which are only being created because they incorporate Bill Cosby’s name. This is bigger than Bill Cosby. This is a target against every black successful man in America like Lebron James, Will Smith and President Obama.”

Trump-Appointed Judge Rejects Tennessee's Anti-Drag Law As 'Unconstitutionally Vague'

Tennessee’s first-in-the-nation law designed to place strict limits on drag shows is unconstitutional, a federal judge says. The law is both “unconstitutionally vague and substantially overbroad” and encouraged “discriminatory enforcement,” according to the ruling late Friday by U.S. District Judge Thomas Parker, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump.

“There is no question that obscenity is not protected by the First Amendment. But there is a difference between material that is ‘obscene’ in the vernacular, and material that is ‘obscene’ under the law,” Parker said.

“Simply put, no majority of the Supreme Court has held that sexually explicit — but not obscene — speech receives less protection than political, artistic, or scientific speech,” he said.

The law would have banned adult cabaret performances from public property or anywhere minors might be present. Performers who broke the law risked being charged with a misdemeanor or a felony for a repeat offense.

Parker used the example of a female performer wearing an Elvis Presley costume and mimicking the iconic musician who could be at risk of punishment under the drag law because they would be considered a “male impersonator.”

Friends of George’s, a Memphis-based LGBTQ+ theater company, filed a complaint in March, saying the law would negatively impact them because they produce “drag-centric performances, comedy sketches, and plays” with no age restrictions.

“This win represents a triumph over hate,” the theater company said in a statement Saturday, adding that the ruling affirmed their First Amendment rights as artists.

“Similar to the countless battles the LGBTQ+ community has faced over the last several decades, our collective success relies upon everyone speaking out and taking a stand against bigotry,” the group said.

Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson, a Republican who was one of the law’s main sponsors, said he was disappointed with the ruling.

“Sadly, this ruling is a victory for those who support exposing children to sexual entertainment,” Johnson said, adding that he hoped the state’s attorney general will appeal the “perplexing ruling.”

Initially, the complaint listed Republican Gov. Bill Lee, Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti and Shelby County District Attorney General Steven Mulroy as defendants. But the plaintiffs later agreed to dismiss the governor and top legal chief — although Skrmetti continued to represent Mulroy for this case.

A spokesperson for both Skrmetti and Mulroy did not immediately respond Saturday to requests for comment on Parker’s ruling.

Tennessee’s Republican-dominated Legislature advanced the anti-drag law earlier this year, with several GOP members pointing to drag performances in their hometowns as reasons why it was necessary to restrict such performances from taking place in public or where children could view them.

Yet the actual word “drag” doesn’t appear in the statute. Instead lawmakers changed the state’s definition of adult cabaret to mean “adult-oriented performances that are harmful to minors.” Furthermore, “male or female impersonators” were classified as a form of adult cabaret, akin to strippers or topless dancers.

The governor quickly signed off on the statute and it was set to take effect April 1. However, to date, the law has never been enforced because the federal judge had sided with the group that challenged the statute in March, and he temporarily blocked the law.

Parker also cited how the law’s sponsor, Republican state Rep. Chris Todd, had previously helped lead an effort to block a drag show in his district before introducing the drag ban proposal. Todd later confirmed that he hadn’t seen the performance, but nevertheless pursued legal action to stop the show and the event was held indoors with an age restriction.

This incident was among the several reasons to believe that the anti-drag law was “geared towards placing prospective blocks on drag shows — regardless of their potential harm to minors,” Parker wrote.

The drag law marks the second major proposal targeting LGBTQ+ people passed by Tennessee lawmakers this year. Lee signed into law GOP-backed legislation banning most gender-affirming care, which is being challenged in court.
