#MAGFAB: Janelle James for Variety Magazine
If you Google Janelle James, the first thing that comes up is that she got her big break from Chris Rock. Wrong!

Rock did hire her as a comedian on his 2017 “Total Blackout Tour,” but James says that’s as far as it goes. “He’s done a lot,” she says, carefully choosing words to describe someone who is credited too frequently for her rise. “He’s done enough for me. He didn’t make my career or anything.” She adds, “I was never close with Chris Rock. We went on tour together, and then I didn’t speak to him after that.”
And of course, she followed what happened to him at the Oscars, but hasn’t watched his Netflix special. She doesn’t want to be cornered into talking about him or the slap in interviews like this one. “I want to truthfully be like, ‘I ain’t seen it. No opinion!’ I don’t want to be involved.”

James has more important things to talk about on this day. She’s become a hot commodity in the industry with her Emmy-nominated breakout role on “Abbott Elementary,” the hottest sitcom on network TV. Her inept Principal Ava Coleman makes an average of 3.3 million viewers a week laugh on the mockumentary show created by and starring Quinta Brunson. The ABC series, which debuted in December 2021, has landed every award in town — from the Emmys to the Golden Globes — and it’s made the entire cast (from Sheryl Lee Ralph to Lisa Ann Walter to Tyler James Williams) sitcom famous.

In Season 2, James’ story arc has only expanded, making her character a fan favorite, despite being selfish and rude. “It’s not easy to play an unlikable character and still win the audience over,” says Brunson. “In the first season, there were a lot of people who weren’t on board with Ava, but her performance brought people in.”

James’ wit and timing comes from self-taught training as a writer. She’s worked in the writers’ rooms of “The Rundown With Robin Thede” and “Black Monday” and pens her own material for her current tour, “Newly Famous.” She also wrote for Hulu’s “History of the World: Part II,” participating in that gig over Zoom.

It’s been quite the happy adjustment for James, who five years ago was living in the backroom of a bike shop. Now, her face is on the side of buses and on billboards — something that still surprises her. She has executives gushing over her, which also feels like an out-of-body experience.
Warner Bros. TV chairman Channing Dungey says, “She expertly walks the tightrope between hilarity and incompetence, delivering each line with precision and wit.” And Disney TV Group president Craig Erwich enthuses, “She continues to show the world that her talent knows no bounds. It has been incredible to witness her star power rise.” President of 20th TV Karey Burke raves, “She’s a true comedic force, whose sheer talent continues to be on display in each and every episode.”

James prefers her privacy, which is why she’s meeting me for breakfast at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. In her words, “Truly wealthy people don’t watch TV.” Plus, she has a new disguise: While on hiatus, she’s been able to take a break from Principal Ava’s many wigs and for the first time has shaved her head.

But there’s something else that goes unsaid. “Abbott Elementary” is a Black show created by a Black showrunner that’s penetrated the cultural discourse. Remarkably, this is still a rare thing in 2023. Looking ahead to the Emmys, many are predicting that “Abbott” will sweep the comedy categories. But it probably won’t be competing against too many other Black shows. “Atlanta” is ending, and the other comedy front-runners are expected to be “Ted Lasso” and “Only Murders in the Building” — shows that don’t feature prominent roles for Black actors. Not only is the cast of “Abbott” diverse, but the 10-person writers’ room is too — something that’s crucial to the show’s success.

“It makes things more natural to have people who get how a Black woman would speak,” says James. “You have to know a person like Ava to be able to write for her. And if they don’t know someone like her — because we do have white writers — it’s good to have a Black person in charge, so when I say, ‘Ava would never say this,’ I’m listened to.” She adds, “There’s some places where it will be a white person telling you that they can write for Black people better than you can. That’s wild! But the diversity of our writers’ room gives the show its authenticity, and we come off as real people.”
James, who declines to disclose her age, isn’t first-name famous like Oprah or Denzel. But she also doesn’t seem to be seeking that out. She’s spent her whole life putting her craft and her skills ahead of her affable, contagiously warm personality. The few biographical details that she volunteers are, indeed, things you can find on Google about her. She lives in Los Angeles and grew up on St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. Starting at age 7, she worked on her dad’s food truck, running up and down the beach to sell Coronas to the fancy tourists on vacation. She has two sons — one who is 20, the other whose age she’s not revealing. She doesn’t see the point of sharing that.

“I’m grown. I have a 20-year-old son. I’m not ashamed of my age or anything like that. But for women — and everybody knows it and acts like they don’t — it gives an idea of what you are in people’s heads,” she says.

#RHOA: Kenya Moore’s Marc Daly Divorce Continues, Restaurateur Ditched By Lawyer, Still Wants Claims To Moore Manor
Kenya Moore’s divorce is STILL ongoing amid news that her estranged husband has been abandoned by his attorney just weeks before they go to trial.
Citing court documents, Radar Online reports that attorney Regina Edwards notified the court last week of her decision to be withdrawn from Marc Daly’s case. Edwards noted Marc has 10 days to object — however, if he does not, the restaurateur remains responsible for prepping for trial and securing new representation.

The lawyer  clearly also noted that the trial scheduled for May 22, 2023, would continue stating, “said proceedings will not be affected by the undersigned’s withdrawal.”

As previously reported, Kenya filed for divorce from Daly in May 2021 after years of alleged reconciliations, relentless rumors, and couples counseling. In the divorce documents, Kenya claimed their marriage was “irretrievably broken” without a sliver of hope to reconcile and listed September 19, 2019, as their date of separation. She also said they’ve been in a “bonafide state of separation since that date.”

Kenya demanded sole physical and legal custody of their daughter, Brooklyn Daly, who was born in 2018. Before the former beauty queen filed for divorce, she filed a legal case for custody over Brooklyn where Marc attempted to prevent their daughter from filming The Real Housewives of Atlanta unless he gave the green light.

The judge stated he was “not convinced, and no evidence has been shown, that” Kenya would place Brooklyn in “any environment that might not be in the minor child’s best interest, or may in any way be considered dangerous or inappropriate.”

The order stated, “The evidence has further shown that if [Kenya] is not able to involve the minor child, that it could negatively impact her ability to make money, or even be employed.”

Marc Daly Still Wants Claims To Kenya’s Moore Manor
In the divorce petition, Kenya also noted that “the parties have acquired other joint personal property as a result of their marriage by way of gifts or joint purchases which must be equitably divided as well as marital debt which must be equitably divided.

Radar also reports that Marc is also asking for the court to award him his “separate real and personal property” but he still wants an “equitable division of the parties’ marital residence a.k.a the housewife’s Moore Manor.

According to Daly, their marital residence was the home Kenya purchased in Georgia so he’s entitled to part of it and he wants Kenya to pay his legal fees.

Kenya And Marc Married In Secret In 2017 Without #RHOA Cameras Rolling, Tried To Reconcile Several Times
Kenya and Marc have continuously made headlines since they jumped the broom in 2017 and their marriage quickly unraveled before the public’s eye.

Marc told Madame Noire in 2021, he was ready to move forward with the divorce and prior to that, Kenya told a divorce attorney that ending their relationship was “not something she initially wanted,” but Marc informed her that he was ready to make a public announcement. The news came amid a #RHOA meltdown at his Black Man Lab charity event seen in season 12.

He infamously said he “hated being married” and berated her during an Uber ride.

The next day divorce news hit the internet but it didn’t take long for the couple to return to marriage counseling, citing they were unsure of where they wanted their marriage to go.
Rumors of reconciliation began to make their rounds after the pair attended Brooklyn’s birthday celebration together and enjoyed a family vacation after the June 2021 divorce filing.

This is a complicated relationship to say the least.

#HipHopNews: Pusha T Fires Back After Jim Jones Says He's Not Among Greatest Rappers
Pusha T is breaking his silence on Jim Jones. The Dipset rapper sparked controversy when he said Pusha T was not deserving of being among the GOATs while discussing Billboard’s list of the Top 50 Greatest Rappers of All Time, which placed the Clipse rapper at No. 29.

“What has he done that puts him in the greatest rappers of all time besides talk about coke that he probably didn’t get himself?” Jones asked during an episode of the Rap Caviar Podcast.
Jones appeared on “The Breakfast Club” on Friday where he doubled down on his sentiments by asking Charmalagne Tha God and DJ Envy if they could rap five Pusha T records.

“You’re not in my top 50,” Jones said of Pusha. “You might be in Charlamagne’s top 50, but you haven’t done that much for me in my life. I didn’t never wanna be like Pusha. I never had a Pusha moment in my life.”

Pusha has not addressed Jim’s controversial comments until now. On Friday, he posted photos from his performance at Jerry Lorenzo’s Fear of God fashion show at the Hollywood Bowl, while seemingly taking shots at the Dipset frontman.

“Places they’ll never be, stages they’ll never see…,” he wrote in his caption.
Fans also shared their support for Pusha in the comments. “Top 50 all time not up for debate,” wrote one fan, while another added, “I fw Jim Jones but he was outta pocket and definitely out his league verbally.”

Jones’ smoke for Pusha may have something to do with Pusha’s nemesis Drake. Jones declared Drake the greatest rapper of all time after Drake brought The Diplomats on stage during his show at the Apollo in January.#HipHopNews: Pusha T Fires Back After Jim Jones Says He's Not Among Greatest Rappers

Simone Biles Is Married! The Olympic Gymnast Weds Jonathan Owens: 'My Person, Forever'
The Olympic gymnast, 26, wed Jonathan Owens, she revealed on social media Saturday. "I do 🤍 officially owens 🤍," Biles captioned a romantic set of images of herself and the Houston Texans player, 27, on Instagram.

In the photos, the pair can be seen exchanging vows in what appears to be a courthouse wedding. For the special day, Biles wore a gorgeous tiered white gown, while Owens sported a tan suit.
On his respective Instagram page, Owens shared a similar selection of shots, including more behind-the-scenes looks at the couple saying "I do."

"My person, forever 💍," he captioned his post, adding two hashtags: "#TheOwens" and "#ItsOfficial."
Biles and Owens had a close encounter during a Texans game in 2019, but the two officially met via the dating app Raya in March 2020 — and it was Biles who initiated the first move.

The star athlete later made her relationship with Owens Instagram official months later, when she posted two sweet photos with him on her page. The loved-up snaps showed the pair cozied up with each other, while the football player gave her a sweet kiss. "It's just us," Biles captioned the post.

One month later, Owens posted two pictures with Biles on his own Instagram, writing, "Now you rockin with a real one 🤞🏽🖤."
Biles and Owens then announced their engagement via a series of Instagram photos shared last February after two years of dating.

The NFL player popped the question under a gazebo in Houston, Texas, with an oval-cut diamond ring featuring a diamond-encrusted band, designed by jeweler ZoFrost.
"THE EASIEST YES," Biles captioned a slideshow of photos from the special moment. "I can't wait to spend forever & ever with you, you're everything I dreamed of and more! let's get married FIANCÉ 💍🥺🥲🤎 @jowens_3."
Biles' wedding day comes about after she and Owens received their marriage license on April 15.

In an Instagram post, the couple looked elated as Biles showed off the document — which was issued in Montgomery County in the state of Texas — after they returned to their car.
"Almost time to say 'I do' 📄🤍," Biles captioned the post, with Owens responding in the comments section, "Soon 🤞🏽."

Biles previously shared several photos of her heavenly-themed wedding shower held at The Juliana in Houston Heights with family and friends on her Instagram Story ahead of her nuptials.

The new bride also celebrated her "boujee" bachelorette party in Belize earlier this year, and marked the moment with a pair of light-wash jeans with the name "Mrs. Owens" emblazoned across the back pockets.

Dame Edna creator Barry Humphries dies in Sydney at 89
Tony Award-winning comedian Barry Humphries, internationally renowned for his garish stage persona Dame Edna Everage, a condescending and imperfectly-veiled snob whose evolving character has delighted audiences over seven decades, has died. He was 89.

His death in the Sydney hospital, where he spent several days with complications following hip surgery, was confirmed by his family.

“He was completely himself until the very end, never losing his brilliant mind, his unique wit and generosity of spirit,” a family statement said.
”With over 70 years on the stage, he was an entertainer to his core, touring up until the last year of his life and planning more shows that will sadly never be,” they added.
Humphries had lived in London for decades and returned to native Australia in December for Christmas.

He told The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper last month that his physiotherapy had been “agony” following his fall and hip replacement.
“It was the most ridiculous thing, like all domestic incidents are. I was reaching for a book, my foot got caught on a rug or something, and down I went,” Humphries said of his fall.

Humphries has remained an active entertainer, touring Britain last year with his one-man show “The Man Behind the Mask.”

The character of Dame Edna began as a dowdy Mrs. Norm Everage, who first took to the stage in Humphries’ hometown of Melbourne in the mid-1950s. She reflected a postwar suburban inertia and cultural blandness that Humphries found stifling.
Edna is one of Humphries’ several enduring characters. The next most famous is Sir Les Patterson, an ever-drunk, disheveled and lecherous Australian cultural attache.

Patterson reflected a perception of Australia as a Western cultural wasteland that drove Humphries along with many leading Australian intellectuals to London.
Humphries, a law school dropout, found major success as an actor, writer and entertainer in Britain in the 1970s, but the United States was an ambition that he found stubbornly elusive.

A high point in the United States was a Tony Award in 2000 for his Broadway show “Dame Edna: The Royal Tour.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to the celebrated comedian.

“For 89 years, Barry Humphries entertained us through a galaxy of personas, from Dame Edna to Sandy Stone,” Albanese tweeted, referring to the melancholic and rambling Stone, one of Humphries most enduring characters. “But the brightest star in that galaxy was always Barry. A great wit, satirist, writer and an absolute one-of-kind, he was both gifted and a gift.”

British comedian Ricky Gervais tweeted: “Farewell, Barry Humphries, you comedy genius.”
Piers Morgan, British television personality, tweeted: “One of the funniest people I’ve ever met.”
“A wondrously intelligent, entertaining, daring, provocative, mischievous comedy Genius,” Morgan added.

The multi-talented Humphries was also a respected character actor with many stage and screen credits, an author of novels and an autobiography, and an accomplished landscape painter.
John Barry Humphries was born in Melbourne on Feb. 17, 1934. His parents were comfortable, loving and strait-laced, and must have wondered about their eldest son, whom they called Sunny Sam. His mother used to tell him to stop drawing attention to himself.

Before he’d finished at the prestigious Melbourne Grammar School, Humphries was more interested in art and secondhand bookshops than football. At 16, his favorite author was Kafka and later said he “felt a little foreign.”

He spent two years at Melbourne University, where he embraced Dadaism -- the subversive, anarchic and absurdist European art movement.

His contributions included “Pus In Boots,” waterproof rubber boots filled with custard, and, on the performance art side, getting on a tram with an apparently blind accomplice whom Humphries would kick in the shins while yelling “Get out of my way, you disgusting blind person.”

In 1959, he settled in London and was soon working in Peter Cook’s comedy venue The Establishment. He played Sowerberry in the original London production of “Oliver!” in 1960 and repeated the role on Broadway. He appeared with Spike Milligan and William Rushton in “Treasure Island.”
Humphries, with New Zealand artist Nicholas Garland, created the Barry McKenzie comic strip for the satirical magazine Private Eye in 1964.

When the strips came out as a book, the Australian government banned it because it “relied on indecency for its humor.” Humphries professed delight at the publicity and implored authorities not to lift the ban.

By then Humphries’ drinking was out of control. In Melbourne in late 1970, he was charged with being drunk and disorderly. He finally admitted himself to a hospital specialising in alcoholism for the treatment that would turn him into a lifelong abstainer.

In 1972 came the first Barry McKenzie film — financially supported by the Australian government, despite the earlier ban. It was savaged by the critics, largely because they trembled at what the world’s first film to feature beer induced vomiting would do to Australia’s image overseas.

But it was a popular success and a sequel two years later included then Prime Minister Gough Whitlam knighting Edna, who was McKenzie’s aunt.

Married four times, he is survived by his wife Lizzie Spender, four children and 10 grandchildren.

Charles Barkley, Gayle King announce new CNN show ‘King Charles’
Charles Barkley and Gayle King announced Saturday their new show together, “King Charles.”
Barkley and King broke the news on the “NBA Tip-Off” show prior to the Game 4 of the Eastern Conference playoff series between the Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76ers.

King joined the “Inside the NBA” crew of Barkley, Ernie Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal to make the announcement.

The show will debut in the fall and run through 2024.
“What I think is so great for the both of us is that it’s live TV. To me, live TV is like working without a net. So whatever happens, happens. I like that,” King said.

King said that she “wasn’t looking for another job,” as she remains under contract for CBS Mornings, and Barkley will continue in his current role as well.

Barkley said that he also didn’t “want to be on TV more,” but agreed to it when offered the opportunity to team with King.

Milton's Jimmie Allen announces separation from wife; pair expecting baby later this year
Country star and Milton-native Jimmie Allen announced that he and his wife, Alexis Gale, are separating while also expecting another child together later this year.

The pair made the announcement via Instagram post Friday evening.
"After much thought and reflection in recent months, Lex & I have made the decision to separate," the post said. "As we navigate this life change, we can also share that we will be welcoming another child together later this year."

Jimmie Allen and then-fiancée, Alexis Gale, attend the 53rd annual CMA Awards at the Music City Center on Nov. 13, 2019, in Nashville, Tenn.
Gale and Allen are already parents to two daughters, 17-month-old Zara James and 3-year-old Naomi Bettie. Allen also has an 8-year-old son, Aadyn, from a previous relationship.

"Our number one priority is and always will be ensuring that our children are healthy, happy and loved, and we remain committed to co-parenting with love and respect for one another," the separation post said. "In light [of] our growing family, we respectfully request privacy during this time."

Allen, 37, and Gale, 27, are both natives of Milton. They met in spring 2019 through a relative of Allen's and were engaged by the summer. They had a private wedding ceremony in June 2020.

Allen's meteoric rise to country superstardom began around 2018 after releasing his debut album, "Mercury Lane." It is named after the Milton street where Allen grew up. The album featured his No. 1 single "Big Shot," making Allen the first Black artist to have a debut single reach No. 1 on country radio.

In 2021, Allen won the Country Music Association Award for New Artist of the Year and the Academy of Country Music Award for New Male Artist of the Year.

Platinum-selling country star Jimmie Allen performs onstage during the 57th Academy of Country Music Awards at Allegiant Stadium on March 7, 2022, in Las Vegas.
His 2020 album "Bettie James," named after his late grandmother and dedicated to his late father, received acclaim from critics and fans with features from music superstars like Nelly, Tim McGraw and Darius Rucker.

Gale and Allen have publicly embraced their Delaware roots. Allen is an alum of Delaware State University, the University of Delaware and Cape Henlopen High School. He does a number of benefit shows in Delaware, including an annual Christmas concert that raises money for different public schools in the state.

Netflix sued by Egyptian lawyer for portraying Cleopatra as Black
Netflix’s upcoming Queen Cleopatra docudrama isn’t sitting well with one Egyptian man. Mahmoud al-Semary, a lawyer in the North African nation, filed a lawsuit with Egypt’s public prosecutor against the streaming giant for its portrayal of the pharaoh.

“Most of what Netflix’s platform displays does not conform to Islamic and societal values and principles, especially Egyptian ones,” the complaint read, according to Egypt Independent. The trailer, he claimed, contradicts Egyptian history.

Al-Semary believes that the documentary promotes Afrocentrism and inaccurately portrays Cleopatra’s race. “Netflix is trying to provoke confusion by spreading false and deceptive facts that the origin of the Egyptian civilization is Black,” he said, per the BBC. The show, he continued, will “promote the Afrocentric thinking… which includes slogans and writings aimed at distorting and erasing the Egyptian identity.”

“In order to preserve the Egyptian national and cultural identity among Egyptians all over the world there must be pride in the makings of such work,” he added. See the trailer for the forthcoming production below.

Cleopatra’s race has been a controversial subject in historical studies for centuries. While she was born in Alexandria, Egypt, she was descended from the Ptolemy line of rulers, whose history was in modern-day Greece. The Ptolemaic Kingdom was founded in 305 B.C. after Alexander the Great’s conquest of Persian-controlled Egypt.

Perhaps the most infamous on-screen portrayal of the pharaoh queen was Elizabeth Taylor donning heavy makeup and gold beads in 1963’s Cleopatra. In the new Netflix series, the ancient monarch will be played by Adele James, a British actress of mixed race. James’ appearances in the show’s promotional material is what led to al-Semary’s outrage.

Jada Pinkett Smith is an executive producer and narrator for “African Queens,” which will follow Cleopatra’s story in its upcoming second season. Like its first go-around, it will combine dramatic recreations of historical events with interviews discussing those developments. When speaking with Netflix about the upcoming season of the show, she expressed her desire in showing a Cleopatra that doesn’t look like Elizabeth Taylor, to say the least.

“We don’t often get to see or hear stories about Black queens, and that was really important for me, as well as for my daughter, and just for my community to be able to know those stories because there are tons of them!” the “Red Table Talk” host said. “The sad part is that we don’t have ready access to these historical women who were so powerful and were the backbones of African nations.”

Season 2 of “African Queens” premieres May 10.

Ex-officer who fatally shot Daunte Wright to be released from prison next week
Kim Potter, the former Minnesota police officer who fatally shot Daunte Wright in April 2021 in Minnesota, will be released from prison next week. As previously reported by REVOLT, the trained law enforcement official who spent 26 years as a cop said she mistook her gun for a TASER during a traffic stop.

In September 2021, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison added first-degree manslaughter to her previously filed charges related to Wright’s passing. Prosecutors cited “reckless handling or use of a firearm so as to endanger the safety of another with such force and violence that death or great bodily harm to any person was reasonably foreseeable” for the amendment. Since then, Potter has spent 16 months as an inmate at the Shakopee Minnesota Correctional Facility.

Yesterday (April 20), Fox News revealed Potter will spend the next eight months on supervised release as she’s expected to be freed from the facility next week. Wright was only 20 years old when her apparent mistake ended his life. At the time of the incident, Potter pulled the young Black man over for expired license tags in Brooklyn Center. Ironically, this fatal tragedy occurred approximately 15 miles from where George Floyd was also killed by a police officer in Minneapolis in 2020. Both deaths prompted massive protests.

A jury convicted Potter of first-degree and second-degree manslaughter. The latter can carry six to eight years in prison, but the former cop will be home in under two. While in court for sentencing, Potter previously apologized to the victim’s grieving loved ones. “To the family of Daunte Wright, I am so sorry that I brought the death of your son, father, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew,” she began. Then, facing his mother, added, “Katie, I understand a mother’s love, and I am sorry I broke your heart. My heart is broken for all of you.”

Young & the Restless' Eric Braeden Reveals Cancer Diagnosis
Eric Braeden is speaking out after being diagnosed with cancer.
The 82-year-old actor has been playing Victor Newman on The Young and the Restless since 1980. He took to social media to open up about his diagnosis and treatment plan.

He also explained why he felt it was so important to share his experience.
Eric took to Facebook on Friday (April 21) to share his story in a video.

He explained that he was having problems with his prostate after getting a knee replacement and went to a urologist to discuss how to treat it. After being recommended a UroLift procedure, his problems got worse, which led to him seeking a second opinion.

His diagnosis came shortly after that, and he had a UroLift during which doctors removed his cancer. He began undergoing treatment after doctors found “high-grade cancer cells.”

“So that’s where I am right now,” he explained, announcing that he planned to continue acting while undergoing weekly treatment for six weeks. “I’m a little under the weather, but not really much. I’ve learned now to listen to my body more and not go all out. I’m gonna get it. And I’ll be in top form again soon.”

He also explained why he felt the need to speak out: “I hate to be this personal but I think this may be good for some older guys who may or may not listen to this,” he said.

We will be keeping Eric in our thoughts and hope he makes a full recovery soon.

Lizzo brings drag performers on stage in Tennessee following new legislation: 'Thank you so much for standing up for your rights'
Drag performers will always have a place on Lizzo’s stage, the “Juice” artist declared during her Friday show at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tenn.

The Grammy winner took the stage for the second half of The Special Tour, and brought out drag performers like Aquaria, Kandy Muse and Vanessa Vanji, per social media posts of the concert.

“In light of recent and tragic events and current events, I was told by people on the internet, ‘Cancel your shows in Tennessee,’ ‘Don’t go to Tennessee,'” Lizzo said during a pause in her set. “Their reason was valid, but why would I not come to the people who need to hear this message the most?”

"Why would I not create a safe space in Tennessee where we can celebrate drag entertainers and celebrate our differences?”
Lizzo’s speech was met with applause from the crowd. She thanked the people in Tennessee for “standing up for your rights, protecting each other and holding the people accountable who should be protecting us.”

In an Instagram comment, Aquaria wrote of being included in the performance, "Thank you so much for the platform for me and the drag race girls and especially for uplifting the queens on Tennessee! Those ladies are all so strong and brave and I know tonight was definitely the best of a tricky situation for everyone. Thanks for shedding light for our friends who definitely need our hand these days. We appreciate it."

Back in March, the Republican-led Tennessee state senate passed the bill restricting "adult cabaret performances” in public spaces where children may be present. Under the new piece of legislation, which was quickly signed by Governor Bill Lee and went into effect on April 1, drag performances are prohibited in venues that are accessible to minors.

WATCH THE MADNESS
Lizzo has spoken out about this issue before. In March, she used social media to raise awareness of the anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, which also includes banning gender-affirming care.

The singer also released a gender-affirming shapewear line called Your Skin through her brand Yitty, which included chest binders and tucking underwear. A statement on the Yitty Instagram page read of the new line, out in summer, "When we say we support every body, we mean it. We believe in radical self-love for people of all gender identities — including the trans, non-binary, gender-fluid and gender non-conforming communities that have been chronically underserved. So, we decided to take our expertise and create styles that serve those very same communities."

That same month, Lizzo tweeted her thoughts on the bigotry she has seen in recent years.

“I’ve never heard a person say why they’re racist… Or fatphobic," she shared. "I’ve never heard a reason why someone is transphobic.. I think if we knew ‘why’ these people felt this way there would way less support for these ideals. Because the ‘why’ is more insidious than we realize.”

Ex-NBA coach Phil Jackson says he stopped watching basketball when players wore slogans on jerseys during COVID-19 bubble
Hall of Fame NBA coach Phil Jackson says he hasn't enjoyed or watched basketball since the 2020 bubble in Orlando, Florida, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The reason? He didn't like the slogans on players' jerseys or on the court.

“ … They had things on their back like 'Justice' and a funny thing happened like, 'Justice just went to the basket and Equal Opportunity knocked him down,'" Jackson said on the Tetragrammaton podcast with Rick Rubin. "... Some of my grandkids thought it was pretty funny to play up those names; I couldn't watch that."

The NBA agreed to let players wear slogans such as "Justice," "Equality," "Black Lives Matter," "Say Their Names," "Vote," "Peace" and others on the back of their jerseys instead of their names during the bubble in 2020 as a show of support for fighting racial injustice in the United States.

That decision by the league came on the heels of massive protests during the 2020 summer after the murder of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man, and the death of Breonna Taylor, an unarmed Black woman who was killed in her home. Games were postponed during the bubble when players refused to play in the wake of the shooting of Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old Black man, in Wisconsin.

Jackson, 77, appears to believe this messaging did more harm than good because it made the league too political.

"It was trying to cater to an audience or trying to bring a certain audience to the game," he said, "and they didn't know it was turning other people off. People want to see sports as non-political. Politics stays out of the game; it doesn't need to be there."

No matter which way you look at it, this isn't the first time Jackson wanted basketball players to stay out of politics, nor is it his first questionable remark on racial topics.

Jackson told ESPN's J.A. Adande in 2010, “I don’t think teams should get involved in the political stuff," when talking about the Phoenix Suns' peaceful protest of Arizona's new immigration laws with "Los Suns" jerseys.

He's also said "a certain population in our society" has a "limitation of their attention span" because of rap music, players "have been dressing in prison garb ... it’s like gangster, thuggery stuff" and referred to LeBron James' business partners as his "posse" in a 2016 interview with ESPN.

Chicago Bulls legend Scottie Pippen, who played for Jackson during the Bulls' championship runs in the 1990s, accused his former coach in 2021 of being racist after Jackson drew up a last-second play for then-rookie Toni Kukoč instead of Pippen during a 1994 playoff game.

"I don’t think it’s a mystery, you need to read between the fine lines," Pippen said. "... I felt like it was an opportunity to give [Kukoč] a rise. It was a racial move to give him a rise. After all I’ve been through with this organization, now you're gonna tell me to take the ball out and throw it to Toni Kukoč? You’re insulting me. That’s how I felt."

Pippen also said Jackson tried to "expose" Kobe Bryant after leaving him and the Los Angeles Lakers to write a book in 2004, only to return in 2005.

Jackson played, coached and was an executive in the NBA for 50 years from 1967-2017. He is in the Basketball of Fame for his time as a coach, where he won 11 NBA titles with the Bulls and Lakers. Jackson became the president of the New York Knicks in 2014 but mutually parted ways with the team in 2017.

Colin Kaepernick Pays for Autopsy of Man Who Died in Jail After Being ‘Eaten Alive’ by Bed Bugs
*Colin Kaepernick paid for the autopsy of the mentally ill Georgia man who died in a bedbug-infested jail cell last year.
As TMZ reports, Kaepernick contacted the family’s attorney, Ben Crump, to help fund an independent autopsy that was conducted by authorities. The official autopsy came back “undetermined.”

We previously reported that LaShawn Thompson, 35, died in September 2022 at Fulton County Jail after being “eaten alive by insects” in his jail cell, per PEOPLE. His family is calling for a criminal investigation into his death.

“The jail cell Mr. Thompson was housed in, was not fit for a diseased animal,” one of the family’s lawyers, Michael D. Harper, said in the statement. “He did not deserve this.”
Three months prior to his death on June 12, 2022, Thompson was arrested for simple battery and was reportedly placed in the jail’s psychiatric unit due to unspecified mental health issues. While detained, his health reportedly deteriorated, but staffers did nothing to help him.

“They literally watched his health decline until he died,” Harper said. “When his body was found one of the detention officers refused to administer CPR because in her words she “freaked out.”

The family believes that the “filthy” conditions at the jail contributed to his death.

According to a Fulton County Medical Examiner’s report, Thompson’s body was “covered in bed bugs” and it was “unknown the last time the decedent was seen.”
“Mr. Thompson was found dead in a filthy jail cell after being eaten alive by insects and bed bugs,” Harper said earlier this month.

In a statement obtained by PEOPLE, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged the “dilapidated and rapidly eroding conditions” of the facility, and that “a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Thompson’s death” has been launched.

“Without making any explicit statements about Mr. Thompson’s health, it’s fair to say that this is one of many cases that illustrate the desperate need for expanded and better mental health services,” per the sheriff’s office statement, PEOPLE reports.

Family members are seeking an explanation into Thompson’s, along with sweeping changes to the Fulton County Jail conditions.

“The ongoing investigation is examining details regarding the medical care provided and ultimately will determine whether any criminal charges are warranted in this case,” reads a statement from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office.

Boston Marathon Organizers Siding With Black Runners Who Were Racially Profiled; “We Need To Do Better”
Boston Marathon organizers admit that mistakes were made in the case of two Black running clubs that were racially profiled during Monday’s race.

The story made headlines this week after Black attendees stationed within a cheer zone at the marathon were wrongly profiled by police for cheering on members of their running group, Pioneers Run Club. According to attendee Jean Mike Remy, it is common practice for supporters of runners to jog onto the course to celebrate with friends for a few moments. This is especially true when runners reach Mile 21. Usually, the most challenging stretch of the marathon, completing it is an extraordinary feat. However, Remy says when his group tried to celebrate the monumental completion, they were instantly surrounded by police officers. A video shared on social media shows multiple Newton officers barricading the group from accessing that part of the race. Several officers positioned themselves behind the group. Remy and other club members have accused the officers of over-policing them.

The department claims they responded “respectfully” after receiving multiple complaints about the group crossing over the rope. Now, Boston Athletic Association President and CEO Jack Fleming is siding with Pioneers Run Club and TrailblazHers Run Co., whose supporters were also profiled by cops.

“This year, we know that we did not deliver on our promise to make it a great day for everyone,” Fleming shared in a statement Thursday. He revealed that he met with both clubs to hear their concerns and learned they’d been mistreated. It says creating a welcoming environment is the job of organizers.

“We need to do better to create an environment that is welcoming and supportive of the BIPOC communities at the marathon,” Fleming added.

Members and fans of Pioneers usually gather on the sideline with tents, music, and grills as they await their club’s runners to appear on the portion of course known as “Heartbreak Hill.”

Fresno Vice Principal Placed On Leave After Calling Teens ‘Section 8 People’ And ‘Ghetto Girls’
A Fresno school official is under investigation after a viral TikTok video shows him racially profiling three teenage girls.
The video shows Sunnyside High School Vice Principal Fred Veenendaal in a heated exchange with the teens. He is seen speaking to someone on the phone, presumably the police. He is heard on camera saying, “Officers, you got three girls here. Three Section 8 people. Ghetto girls.”

In the video taken on Sunday, Veenendaal identified himself as a member of the board of directors at the gated community where the exchange happened. The 27-second video does not show what led up to the confrontation or what immediately followed.

District officials confirmed that Veendendaal was placed on paid leave in connection to the events captured in the video. He’s worked for the district since 2008 and has served as Sunnyside’s vice principal since 2015. Veendendaal makes $139,993 a year, according to the district.

In a statement provided to SFGate, the district said, “We are aware of the video circulating, and the District started an investigation into the matter early Monday.”

“The labels used in the video do not align with the high standards we have for our Fresno Unified leaders and staff,” the statement continued. “Because this is a personnel matter, we will not be able to disclose any resulting information from the investigation. We want to assure our families that having respectful, inclusive, and loving adults serving in our school is of the utmost importance to Sunnyside and our district as a whole.”

The incident comes as the district is weeks away from the anniversary of a student walkout protesting racism. Students were outraged after a picture of a student in what appeared to be a Ku Klux Klan hood circulated on social media. Hundreds of students across the city walked out of class while demanding change.
