The 95th Academy Awards: WINNERS LIST!

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” dominated the Oscars on Sunday night, winning seven awards, including best picture, best actress, best director, best editing, best supporting actor, best supporting actress and best original screenplay.

“Everything Everywhere” had 11 nominations, heading into the night a big favorite.

Throughout awards season, the movie, a major touchstone for Asian representation in U.S. cinema, snared wins for acting, directing and best picture from various groups.

Directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert took home the directing prize. Michelle Yeoh won best actress, making her the first Asian star to take the award. Kwan and Scheinert won best original screenplay.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” was not nominated for best actor, a category that for the first time since 1935 features five actors who have never been nominated before. Brendan Fraser won for “The Whale.”

Ke Huy Quan won best supporting actor for his role in “Everything Everywhere,” and Jamie Lee Curtis, who’s been a film icon since the 1978 horror classic “Halloween,” scored an upset win.

This year’s ceremony marked the first time that four Asian actors competed across multiple acting categories.

Yeoh, 60, is the first Asian-identifying woman nominated for best actress. This distinction has been made because, technically, Merle Oberon, who was of mixed British and South Asian descent, was the first in 1935, earning a nomination for her work on the film “The Dark Angel,” but she concealed her heritage out of fear of discrimination in Hollywood at the time.

Ana De Armas was the first Cuban actress to be nominated for best actress, for her role as Marilyn Monroe in Netflix

 movie “Blonde.”

Angela Bassett also earned another first for the ceremony, becoming the first actor to receive a nomination for a role in a Marvel film. She was nominated for best supporting actress for her portrayal of Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” The movie won for costume design.

“All Quiet on the Western Front” won four early on, mainly in the technical categories.

This year’s ceremony drew extra attention after Will Smith smacked Chris Rock during last year’s show. Host Jimmy Kimmel brought it up every chance he could Sunday night.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta cast member took to Instagram to make the announcement and pay tribute to her late loved one. She posted photos both old and new, as well as a video from his memorial service.
“Sorry boos, I been MIA due to the passing of my dad. So thankful for all the text[s], cards, flowers, etc,” Shereé wrote. “My family and I really appreciate everyone who reached out. Always remember to cherish your family and friends.”

In the caption, she also included hashtags that read “RIP Dad,” “family,” and “Cleveland born and raised.”

After Shereé made the post, the comments section was quickly flooded with messages of support as her fellow Bravolebrities and fans alike sent their condolences.
“Awe so sorry babe,” Kenya Moore wrote. “Sending you love and prayers to you [and] your family.”

RHOA alum Porsha Williams also paid her respects, commenting, “I’m sorry for your loss. Praying for your family.”
Added The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip’s Phaedra Parks, “My sincerest condolences… praying for you peace, strength and renewed joy.”

Cynthia Bailey and her ex-husband Peter Thomas were among those who shared kind words with Shereé, as well as Kandi Burruss Tucker and Sanya Richards-Ross.

Outside of the Atlanta Housewives’ circle came heartfelt messages from The Real Housewives of Potomac’s Mia Thornton, The Real Housewives of New York City’s Eboni K. Williams, Married to Medicine’s Quad Webb, The Real Housewives of Orange County’s Tamra Judge, and many more.

Reacting to the outpouring of love, Shereé later wrote, “I can’t respond to everyone, but I really do appreciate the [love].”

RHOA fans have become acquainted with several of Shereé’s family members over the years, including her mom, Thelma; her kids, Kairo, Kaleigh, and Tierra, and her ex-husband, Bob Whitfield. Viewers last saw Shereé on the Season 14 finale, during which it was revealed that she had a “new boo.” He turned out to be Martell Holt of Love & Marriage: Huntsville, Shereé revealed in a July 2022 interview with TMZ.

“We actually met through a mutual friend. He’s met my friends, he met several people in my family,” Shereé said at the time. “We’ve been just hanging out. I’m enjoying life right now.”

#MusicNews: August Alsina  'Myself'

The 10-track set, released via his independent label Shake the World, has already spawned tracks including “Lied to You” and “Weekdays” with Deeno and August’s rumored boyfriend Zu. Other standouts include “Party,” “August,” and “Rules.”

Myself marks August’s first album since 2020’s The Product III: State of Emergency, which featured appearances from Lil Wayne, Juicy J, and Yo Gotti.

“Really it’s me getting back into the core of myself,” said the 30-year-old singer, who recently launched his own skincare brand Encina Wellness. “That is exactly why I think it’s special.”

#HipHopNews: Nicki Minaj Says Female Rappers Are Being Paid To Diss Her
Nicki Minaj claims that there’s a movement to see her demise and that female rappers are being paid by labels and management companies to diss her, all for clout.

While speaking with Rah Ali during a Stationhead listening event for her single “Red Ruby Da Sleeze,” Nicki voiced her thoughts on the state of hip-hop and the “microwaveability” of today’s artists.

“As you rap and you write, you get better. And you get better every day,” said Nicki. “But I think the thing is now, because of the…microwaveability of TikTok artists getting deals and Instagram people getting likes or Twitter people…girls’ labels and management companies paying for viral tweets and paying for Nicki diss tweets and all that.”

Nicki, who is launching her own label, believes that the art of lyricism is lost and that it’s unfair to compare her to others who don’t write their own rhymes.

“It’s kind of like, if I don’t remind them that we’re actually here to rap, who will?” she continued. “And then, on top of that, don’t ever put me in the same muthafu**in’ sentence. Don’t use my name for any examples. You have to write your verses, period. And I say that with love because I think that now maybe people are feeling pressure of having to, I don’t know, do things so fast.”

It’s unclear if Nicki was referring to anyone in particular. She and Latto got into a heated exchange on Twitter last year following the Grammys’ controversial decision to remove “Super Freaky Girl” from the rap category.

Elsewhere during her conversation with Rah Ali, Nicki revealed that “Red Ruby Da Sleeze” is not the official single from her long-awaited fifth studio album.

“‘Red Ruby,’ I dropped it as a itty-bitty just something,” she said. “‘Cause I know it’s gon’ go off on tour, it’s gon’ go off on y’all. It’s just rapping. But the album, obviously, I have to drop my official single for the album. ‘Red Ruby’s’ not the official single for the album

Ciara and Russell Wilson Perform and Read Bible Verses for 300 Maximum Security Prison Inmates
Ciara and Russell Wilson recently spent time with 300 inmates at a maximum security prison to sing, dance and read Bible verses in hopes of spreading joy.

The couple teamed up with the organization God Behind Bars to visit Florida's Everglades Correctional Institution and hold an event with the incarcerated men, according to a video shared on Instagram.

"27 incarcerated men gave their lives to Jesus inside of a maximum security prison," read a caption alongside the clip, which saw the Denver Broncos athlete, 34, recite a verse from the Bible encouraging people to forgive past actions and think positively toward the future.

God Behind Bars wrote that "the prison chapel began to erupt in worship and praise" following Wilson's words.

"The voices of the incarcerated were so loud, it felt like it could be heard by the entire prison. In a place so easily filled with so much division, there was a moment where Incarcerated men put their arms around each other and prayed for those struggling with anxiety and depression," continued the caption.

Ciara, 37, also spoke to the inmates about unconditional love and forgiveness before singing "Way Maker," a contemporary worship song by Nigerian gospel singer Sinach.

"You know what's so beautiful about God's love? It's relentless. He don't let off. He don't let off," said the Grammy winner. "And you know what I love about God and what he said in his promise? There's no condemnation in Christ Jesus. So, if you ask for forgiveness, he will forgive you. My heart is filled with joy."

Colin Kaepernick Says He Knows His Adoptive Parents 'Loved' Him, but Struggled to Embrace His Blackness
While promoting his new graphic novel, former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick talked about his struggles growing up with his adoptive parents, who are White.

During an interview with CBS News, Kaepernick, who is biracial and identifies as Black, said he sometimes experienced pushback from his adoptive parents Rick and Teresa Kaepernick.
"I know my parents loved me, but there were still very problematic things that I went through," the 35-year-old told CBS News. Kaepernick mentioned a time when he wanted to get cornrows, and his mom pushed back, calling the hairstyle "unprofessional" and that he would look like "a little thug."

"I think it was important to show, 'No, this can happen in your own home.' And how do we move forward collectively while addressing the racism that is being perpetuated," he added.

This week saw the release of Kaepernick's graphic novel, Change the Game, which tells his life story from the perspective of his teenage self. The book is aimed at readers 12 and up, was co-written with Eve L. Ewing.
Kaepernick became the topic of national conversation when, in 2016, he remained seated during the national anthem before a 49ers game. He said the action was to raise awareness about systemic racism and police brutality.

He continued the protest in the following weeks, but instead of remaining seated, Kaepernick kneeled during the anthem, which would later be called the #TakeAKnee movement.
"You know, very similar to the messaging of the book is I don't have control over all of these situations. But I control how I respond to it, I control how I prepare for it, and I'm a believer that in doing that, good things will happen," Kaepernick told CBS News.

In 2022, Kaepernick wrote a book for younger children, I Color Myself Different.
In a statement to PEOPLE, he said he faced different challenges while writing for a slightly older audience.
"[The book] deals with more complex issues than I Color Myself Different," explained. "The common thread, however, is creating books that give power and agency to the reader, specifically Black and Brown youths."

After opting out of his contract with the 49ers in 2017, Kaepernick has not played in an NFL game, and recently settled a lawsuit with the NFL after accusing team owners of colluding to keep him out of the league. He told CBS News that he still wants to play.

"Five, six days a week I'm still up at 4:30, I go get my training in. Yeah, that passion is still there and the ability is still there," he said.

Chris Rock’s Flubbed Will Smith Joke Edited Out of ‘Selective Outrage’ Special
Rock was attempting to tell a joke about his 2016 Oscars hosting gig and Will Smith's 2015 film 'Concussion' during the live special when he confused it with the actor's most recent film, 'Emancipation.'

A joke about Will Smith featured in Chris Rock: Selective Outrage has been edited out after Rock flubbed it at his live show.
During a run of jokes about the Oscar-winning actor and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, toward the end of Rock’s March 4 show — the streamer’s first-ever live, global streaming event — the comedian messed up his own joke as he recalled a conversation he allegedly had with the Smiths over his 2016 Oscars hosting gig.

“Years ago, his wife said I should quit the Oscars; I shouldn’t host ’cause her man didn’t get nominated for Emancipation, the biggest piece of shit ever!” Rock told the Baltimore crowd, before quickly acknowledging his error. “No, not Emancipation, I fucked up the joke.”

The joke was meant to reference Smith’s 2015 sports drama Concussion, which was based on Jeanne Marie Laskas’ 2009 NFL and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) exposé “Game Brain,” published by GQ. For Netflix subscribers who have watched the replay version currently streaming, this portion of the live special has been edited out.

A source close to the production tells The Hollywood Reporter that Rock was aware of the edit, with the comedian and Netflix working together on the final streaming cut.
Following the misstep, Rock continued on and delivered the joke accurately. “She started this shit. She said that me, a fucking grown-ass man, should quit his job because, ‘My husband didn’t get nominated for Concussion,'” he said.

The instance Rock was mentioning took place the same year that Pinkett Smith was boycotting the ceremony amid the #OscarsSoWhite movement, which focused on the Film Academy’s history of racial exclusion within its nominee and winners lists.

Smith took to the 2022 Oscars stage last March and slapped Rock after he made an unscripted joke about Pinkett Smith’s bald hairstyle, a result of alopecia, an immune-related condition. The joke followed one Rock had made during his monologue while hosting the 2016 show, in which he said, “Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited.”

Rock also made a separate joke at the 2016 ceremony about Pinkett Smith and Concussion. “[You] said, ‘It’s not fair that Will was this good [in Concussion] and didn’t get nominated!’” he said. “You’re right! It’s also not fair that Will was paid $20 million for Wild Wild West! OK?”

In THR’s review of Selective Outrage, chief TV critic Daniel Fienberg wrote, “Netflix attempted to build a live stunt out of Rock doing stand-up material that he’s been doing on the road for 10 months, and the only thing that would tell you the special was live was — after making viewers wait 61 minutes for the inevitable Will Smith material — Rock fucking up the joke. A joke he’s probably made around the country dozens of times.”

The hourlong comedy special, highly anticipated for featuring the comedian’s response to Smith slapping him, placed seventh in Netflix’s U.S. top 10 but did not land in the streamer’s top global rankings.

6-Year-Old Boy Won't Face Charges For Shooting His Teacher
A 6-year-old boy in Newport News, Virginia, will not face charges for shooting his teacher during class in January.
Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney Howard Gwynn told NBC News on Wednesday that the “prospect that a 6-year-old can stand trial is problematic.”

Gwynn doubted that a young child would be able to understand the legal system, what a charge means or how to adequately assist an attorney.

Although a 6-year-old could be theoretically be criminally charged under Virginia law, Gwynn said he does not believe there is a legal basis to charge the child.
“Our objective is not just to do something as quickly as possible,” Gwynn said. “Once we analyze all the facts, we will charge any person or persons that we believe we can prove beyond a reasonable doubt committed a crime.”

On Jan. 6, the unnamed boy reportedly brought a 9 mm handgun to school and intentionally shot his first grade teacher, Abby Zwerner, as she was teaching the class.

The 25-year-old teacher was hospitalized for nearly two weeks but is now recovering at home.
The boy’s parents said their child has an “acute disability” and was under a care plan that required at least one of his parents to be in his classroom every day.

The shooting happened during the first week when the child was unaccompanied by either parent, according to the parents’ statement.

“We will regret our absence on this day for the rest of our lives,” the parents said.
In addition, school staff told administrators on three separate occasions that the child had brought a gun to class, Zwerner’s lawyer said in January.

Since the shooting, two metal detection systems have been installed at the school and two security officers have been assigned to the campus.

Lukas Gage addresses speculation he’s dating Chris Appleton
Lukas Gage is aware people are wondering if he is dating celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton.
Everyone can keep wondering for now. In an interview with the New York Times, it was noted that the 27-year-old “White Lotus” star had just returned from vacationing in Mexico with Appleton, 39.

The interviewer pointed out that some people took the social media photos they posted of their vacay “as a relationship announcement,” to which Gage replied, “If they want to think that, they can.”

“I’m a pretty open book about most things in my life, but I have a problem with the culture of everyone needing to know everybody’s business and nothing can be sacred,” he said. ” It’s a weird line that I’m still trying to figure out.”

He was more open about his desire to land a role on the hit Netflix series, “You,” which he eventually did as he currently stars in Season 4.

“I think I had auditioned for every single season of “You” and didn’t get it until then. I auditioned for [star Penn Badgley’s serial killer character] Joe originally,” Gage said. “[I] played him like a mustache-twirling, villainous murderer, and the casting director was like, ‘Yeah, that’s totally tonally off, but thank you.’”

Mississippi man gets federal hate crime charges for cross burning to scare Black family
On (March 9), a Mississippi man received federal hate crime charges after he burned a cross in his front yard to intimidate a Black family. U.S. District Judge Halil S. Ozerden sentenced 24-year-old Axel Cox of Gulfport to 42 months in prison.

According to the Department of Justice, the crime happened on Dec. 3, 2020 when Cox attempted to scare his Black neighbors by burning the cross. Documents revealed he violated the Fair Housing Act by using threatening and racially derogatory language toward the residents. What led to the extreme racist behavior? Officials say a verbal altercation between Cox and the neighboring family was the motivating factor. After the argument, the young man took two pieces of wood to make a cross, placed it in plain sight of the victims’ home, poured oil onto it and set it on fire. As this was going on, Cox shouted racial slurs and threatened the family. He later confessed that he did it because the victims were Black, and he wanted them to move away from his Mississippi home.

Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division said, “This cross burning was an abhorrent act that used a traditional symbol of hatred and violence to stoke fear and drive a Black family out of their home.” She continued speaking about Cox’s vile ways: “While one might think cross-burnings and white supremacist threats and violence are things of the past, the unfortunate reality is that these incidents continue today. This sentence demonstrates the importance of holding people accountable for threatening the safety and security of Black people in their homes because of the color of their skin or where they are from.”

U.S. Attorney Darren LaMarca for the Southern District of Mississippi condemned the practice. “No one should endure such hatred and intimidation because of the color of his skin. This defendant has been held accountable. His sentence should permeate among his kind and declare that Mississippi and the Department of Justice will not tolerate this hateful behavior,” he vowed. The FBI’s Jackson branch was also involved in the investigation. In addition to Cox’s prison sentence, he must also pay $7,810 in restitution and comply with three years of supervised release.

Idris Elba Admits Being Named People's 'Sexiest Man Alive' Was Actually His Hardest Role!
Idris Elba was crowned People‘s Sexiest Man Alive just a few years ago in 2018.
The title, which recognizes what many consider to be the most attractive male celeb of the year, has been most recently passed down to Chris Evans for 2022.

Looking back, Idris joked about being labeled as the sexiest man alive, and how it was his hardest role to date.
While chatting with ET Canada, Idris shared that the cover shoot was the easiest part of it all.

“I said to the photographer, ‘I don’t always photograph great in pictures, this picture needs to be great.’ [They’re like] ‘No, no, no. We’ve done this a million times, we know how to do it.’ And I was like, ‘Ok, I’ll just be me,’” he recalled.

Idris went on, “Then they do this sort of thing where they make your favorite camera angle work for the cover.”

Later on in the interview, Idris revealed that he’s still quite surprised that he gets recognized at all.
“I don’t presume that everyone knows who I am, even though I’ve been acting for a long time. When I look in the mirror, it’s just a guy that was trying to be an actor. So if I walk into a restaurant in the middle of Belgium, I’m not expecting everyone to recognize me.”

Idris‘ new movie, Luther: The Fallen Sun, is now streaming on Netflix.

Mariah Carey’s ‘Black Irish’ Liquor is Going Global
*Singer Mariah Carey has been making the world happy through her timeless songs. She now wants to make it even happier through her Black Irish liquor. After successfully rolling out her Black Irish Cream Liqueur brand in the US in 2021, Carey has now trained her eyes on the world stage, beginning with South America and the Caribbean. She heads there this Spring to launch what will be her brand’s first international distribution.

In a news release, Carey shared her joy with her fans.

“I am ecstatic to extend the reach of my cream-liqueur Black Irish to South America and the Caribbean,” she said. “My fans there have supported and given so much to me, so of course I wanted to create an opportunity for them to enjoy this delicious liqueur!”

Carey’s creamy flavors include Original Irish Cream Liqueur, Salted Caramel Irish Cream Liqueur, and White Chocolate Irish Cream Liqueur. They align with her “Queen Of Christmas” title, for they perfectly suit holidaying revelers.
Carey’s father was of Black and Venezuelan descent, while her mother has Irish blood. The drink is therefore in recognition of her mixed heritage. The drink, which was crafted in Ireland, is made with aged Irish whiskey and dairy from Irish farms.

Taking to Twitter, the music star tweeted, “Introducing BLACK IRISH. Two years in the making. Truly a cause for celebration!!!” “It’s Like That.”

Black consumers account for 12% of alcohol sales, yet only a paltry 2% of Black entrepreneurs are in the spirits industry, according to research.
Carey’s Black Irish will be distributed in locations throughout Mexico, Brazil, and the Bahamas, with more markets added.

Bishop Lamor Whitehead Indicted on New Fraud Charges
*Bishop Lamor Whitehead has been accused of using fake bank records to secure a mortgage for his million-dollar mansion in Paramus, NJ.
According to multiple reports, the flashy bishop falsified financial documents to secure business loans, per an indictment filed in Manhattan Federal court.

The pastor of Leaders of Tomorrow allegedly told the bank that his company, Anointing Management Services LLC, had $2 million saved up but actually only had $10, the Feds claim, MadameNoire reports.

Whitehead was denied the loan several times, but he continued to submit fraudulent financial documents until February 2019, “including in an application for a $1.3 million mortgage to fund the purchase of his six-bedroom, seven-bath Paramus, N.J., mansion,” according to the report.

The preacher has pled not guilty to four of the five fraud-related charges leveled against him.
“We are going to be fighting those allegations,” Whitehead’s lawyer, Dawn Florio, said. “Lamor Whitehead will be pleading not guilty when he is arraigned on the … indictment and denies those charges.”

These latest charges come after Whitehead, who was robbed while preaching at his church this past summer, was arrested in December on federal charges for allegedly defrauding a parishioner, trying to extort a businessman, and lying to the FBI, according to a federal indictment.

We reported previously, citing CNN, that Whitehead allegedly defrauded one of his parishioners out of about $90,000 from her retirement savings over the course of at least 14 months beginning around April 2020, according to the indictment.
The document said Whitehead told the parishioner he would use her money to help her buy a home and invest the rest of the money but instead used it “to purchase thousands of dollars of luxury goods and clothing” and “for his own purposes.”

He faces up to 65 years in prison if convicted.

In a statement to ESPN, Kemp’s attorney Scott Boatman revealed Kemp’s car was broken into it, and numerous items were stolen, including an iPhone. Kemp tracked the iPhone to an occupied car and was shot at when he got near the vehicle. Kemp returned fire in self-defense.

TMZ has obtained footage from a parking lot showing Kemp shooting a gun in a parking lot before his felony arrest. Kemp is seen in a red vest, pointing his gun and yelling before shooting. Witnesses state multiple shots were fired, and Kemp drove around the parking lot and tossed his gun in the bushes before speaking with police. The video also shows Kemp attempting to get the attention of the police to chase another vehicle.

Police in Tacoma, WA, stated an incident between two cars near the Tacoma Mall led to shots being fired Wednesday afternoon. No injuries were reported, and one of the cars involved fled the scene.

Kemp was booked on a felony drive-by-shooting charge at 5:58 p.m. local time, four hours after the incident.

In his NBA career, Kemp was a six-time NBA All-star after being drafted 17th overall in the 1989 draft.

Jonathan Majors Hopes To Meet Dennis Rodman Before Taking On Iconic Biopic Role
Hollywood’s newest “It” guy Jonathan Majors is ready to fully embody the role of Dennis Rodman in the forthcoming biopic.
Earlier this week, news broke that Majors would be taking on the life and career of the NBA icon. In a sit-down with the Associated Press, Majors confirmed the film was in the works and says he wants to meet the NBA All-Star and get to know him in hopes of fully engulfing himself in all things Rodman to bring the character to life.

“I never really put a ceiling on myself, but this is definitely a role where I’m definitely going to make sure I’m pushing that ceiling out. Because he demands that,” Majors shared.

The film will specifically focus on the infamous “48 in Vegas” incident, where Rodman went to the city for a mid-season break during his run with the Chicago Bulls. Though former head coach Phil Jackson approved, the events of that wild weekend could not have been predicted by anyone. That two-day break turned into four days of intense partying in the city with his girlfriend, Carmen Electra. Michael Jordan and Jackson would eventually go to the city personally to retrieve Rodman.

Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Aditya Sood will produce “48 Hours in Vegas” for Lord Miller, which will be presented by Lionsgate. The Jordan VanDina-written screenplay will be executive produced by Ari Lubet, Will Allegra, and Rodman.

West Virginia Senate to Revive the Child Marriage Ban Bill
One day after its defeat in the committee, the state senate revived a bill on Thursday to prohibit minors from getting married in West Virginia.
Although the change of heart didn’t guarantee the bill’s passage, several senators gave impassioned speeches defending the right of teenagers in love to marry.

As of last week, the bill was approved by the house of delegates.  On Wednesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee rejected the bill without discussion.  By Thursday, the Senate approved a motion filed by Republican Sen. Charles Trump of Morgan County to remove the bill from committee and give it a second reading.

During its final reading Friday, the Senate will have the opportunity to amend the bill.

Children can currently marry as young as 16 with parental consent in West Virginia, but anyone younger must also get a judge’s waiver.
It has been estimated that there has been over 3,600 marriages involving one or more children in Kanawha County since 2000, according to Democratic delegate Kayla Young.

Attorney and Democratic senator Mike Woelfel claimed to have represented a girl who was in the eighth grade when she got married and divorced.

According to Woelfel, he is concerned that older men court young girls, “and the next thing you know, some young girl has convinced her parents to let her get married.”
“What we have here is a good bill because it does recognize that we aren’t in the 1950s or ’60s,” Woelfel said.  “I think we’re moving into the modern era with this.”

Senator Mike Stuart, a Republican from Kanawha County and a former federal prosecutor, said he supports the age of 16 for marriage.  He says his parents were married at 16 almost 50 years ago, and “are still giddy teenagers” today.

Sen. Eric Tarr of Putnam County, a Republican, stated that although he got married in high school, he understood the need for the bill to address concerns.

“Knowing what it means to be two mature high school students in love and getting married and creating a life together, that’s a family born and a family that stays together,” Tarr said.  “I think every one of us in this chamber values that and understands that.”

By establishing 18 as the legal age for consent, the bill eliminates the possibility of minors obtaining consent through their parents, guardians, or through court proceedings.  Existing legal marriages in other states would not be affected by the law.

Since 2018, seven states have made the legal age of marriage 18 or older, according to the nonprofit organization Unchained At Last, which works to stop child and forced marriage.
Pew Research Center reports that West Virginia had the highest rate of child marriages among states in 2014, with 7.1 marriages per 1,000 teens ages 15-17.
