#MAGFAB: THE GODDESS SUPERMODEL Iman for British Vogue Jan 2023

FABULOUS as always! Iman covers the January 2023 issue of British Vogue magazine photographed by Nadine Ijewere and styled by Kate Phelan.

Despite, arguably the current ubiquity of Black models, Iman still has reservations. And it goes beyond fashion. “There’s always three steps forward, five steps back,” she says impassioned, pointing to wider global issues. “Look at what is happening across Europe, in America. We are seeing the rise of white supremacy reverberating across all industries. People are starting to feel like, ‘We’ve done enough.’ As if we are a charity. Don’t give me a handout, because that in itself is a racist act. The reason a lot of [racist] things are happening in our industry is because there is nobody [non-white] in decision-making positions. These people exist. So this idea that we are asking for a seat at the table… I’m done with the seat at the table. Let’s just dismantle the whole table.”

Argentina beats France on penalty kicks, winning World Cup for third time
LUSAIL, Qatar — The World Cup final “for eternity” descended into madness, and then into perhaps the greatest game ever played, around 7:40 p.m. here at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday, with Argentine dreams crystallizing and then, suddenly, in 96 seconds, paralyzed.
They were ultimately realized on a night of lunacy and heart-stopping drama, of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé. They were realized by and for Messi, and by Argentine goalkeeper Emi Martinez, and for a nation of 46 million that erupted into once-in-a-generation celebrations.

But only after Mbappé twice shattered those dreams. Only after a 2-0 lead became 2-2, and 3-2 became 3-3. A wild emotional ride took the final to penalties, where Martinez rose to the occasion yet again.

The goalkeeper, nicknamed “Dibu,” sprung to his right to push away Kingsley Coman’s second spot-kick for France, after Messi and Mbappé had converted. He pranced around the penalty area, pumping his fist into the air. He then shimmied after his sheer size forced Aurelien Tchouameni, France’s next taker, to drag his penalty wide.

Gonzalo Montiel, a reserve defender, completed Argentina’s shootout perfection and sent the Argentine fans behind one goal into delirium. Messi fell to his knees. Teammates engulfed him. He had done it. Finally, he and Argentina had done it.

For around an hour, Sunday’s finale had been a coronation, a crowning of Messi as the greatest player ever in his last World Cup match, and of Argentina as the kings of Qatar. They went ahead via Messi, from the penalty spot, in the 23rd minute. They doubled their lead with a masterpiece, seven touches via six players and a couple of bursting 50-yard runs. Angel Di Maria punctuated the world-class counterattack, and a dominant first half.
And from there, Argentina maintained control. The South Americans were, it seemed, oddly comfortable. They bossed the game from midfield. Their fans roared with passion and approval. Over 8,000 miles away in Buenos Aires, hope and belief gradually turned celebratory.

But then, with clocks ticking toward 80 minutes, France — and disaster — struck. Marcus Thuram, who’d entered as a first-half substitute with the French faltering and flailing, got behind the Argentina defense and won a penalty. Mbappé waited, patiently, as the ball hung in the air, at the edge of the penalty spot. He swiveled his hips, and spanked it past Martinez. The French bench spilled all the way across the field, chasing Mbappé in elation. Thousands of Argentine fans stood motionless, hands on heads, in despair.

Mbappé raced to recover the ball from the back of the net, and placed it at midfield, ready to go in search of a second — which he found a minute later.

From there, for roughly 17 minutes, the game devolved into chaos. France howled for another penalty, but the referee correctly ruled that Thuram had tried to con him. Both teams had chances, and Messi had a couple momentous ones, with the ball and the world at his feet at the top of the penalty area. But Hugo Lloris palmed one stinging shot over the crossbar.

At the final whistle of regulation, players from both teams keeled over in physical and emotional exhaustion. Extra time then restored order. Argentina ascended toward the end of the first period, with Messi teeing up Lautaro Martinez for a golden chance, but Dayot Upamecano careened across the penalty area for a heroic block.

Then, in the second half of extra time, the storybook ending seemed to arrive. In the 108th minute, a ball fell into Messi’s lap and the soccer gods, finally, seemed to smile down on him. He pounced on that ball in France’s penalty area, scored his second goal of the night, and rekindled dreams.

Then Mbappé shattered them again. An Argentine handball in the penalty box gave the French star yet another chance to equalize. He sent Martinez the wrong way, and elevated a legendary game to an unparalleled game.
The shootout, finally, triggered the wild Argentine celebrations. Martinez fell onto his back. Everybody in Argentine white and sky blue ran every which way. Messi emerged in unbridled joy to conduct songs and wave to fans.

He had played a thousand soccer games and dreamed a thousand dreams and cried a thousand tears for this, his moment, Argentina’s moment, 35 and 36 years in the making.
He had starred and suffered, dazzled and despaired, worked and waited and waited, longingly, agonizingly, for almost three hours here at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday.

Now, he was off to enjoy it.

Awwwwwwww, Rihanna And A$AP Rocky Share First Look At Baby Boy

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s son is ready for his close-up. The couple’s baby boy made his debut on social media. On Saturday, the “Lift Me Up” singer gave fans a first look at the 7-month-old son as part of her first TikTok video.

She captioned the 45-second clip, “hacked.”

The adorable infant, who bears a striking resemblance to his famous parents, is all smiles as he sits in a car seat while his mother films him on her phone.

“You tryna get mommy’s phone?” says Rihanna as he reaches toward the phone and attempts to put it in his mouth.

The first photos of the couple’s baby boy, whose name has not been revealed, were also shared by Hollywood Unlocked. In one pic, Rocky can be seen holding his fashionable son, decked out in a leather diaper.

Rihanna and Rocky welcomed their first child in May, but they have chosen to keep him off social media.

“We just didn’t get around to it yet, really. We’ve just been living,” Rihanna told The Associated Press last month. “But I guess there’s a certain freedom that comes with kind of just like getting it out there.”

The singer, who earned her first Golden Globe nomination for “Lift Me Up,” has a big year ahead. In February, she will return to the stage when she headlines the Super Bowl Halftime Show.

The couple is reportedly looking to add to their family. “Rihanna always dreamed of being a mom and she takes a lot of pride in it. She would love to have more children with A$AP in the future,” a source told ET.

The Broadway play ‘Ain’t No Mo’’ Earns a Broadway Extension Due To High-Profile Support

Play Ain’t No Mo, written by the youngest American Broadway playwright, Jordan E. Cooper, has announced a one-week extension of the show due to high-profile support.

The Lee Daniels-produced show was slated to conclude on Dec. 18 after opening on Dec. 1st. With support from Hollywood’s finest including Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, Tyler Perry, Shonda Rhimes, Queen Latifah and more — the show will now go on another week until Dec. 23.

During Thursday night’s performance (Dec. 15), the 27-year-old writer announced the extension after a plethora of supporters joined the #saveAINTNOMO campaign, gaining the attention of the respective authorities.

“We are still fighting, but we’re not closing this week anymore! Cooper gratefully said on Twitter. “Y’all are some MIGHTY MIGHTY warriors, I can’t thank you enough for fighting with us. Thank you to everyone who bought a ticket or sponsored one, or posted, or shared, or told someone. We’ve had sold out audiences.”

Cooper added in another note: “THANK YOU!! Look what COMMUNITY can do! Ya’ll are showing up and showing OUT and I can’t thank you enough. Togetherness and belief is a MIGHTY power. We’ve won a battle, but we are still at war with parts of a system that must be examined.”

“Please continue to spread the word, we have to show that there is room for work like this. It’s so much bigger than ‘Ain’t No Mo.’ We’ve got work to do. New Tickets are on sale NOW! Get a seat and come take flight!” he said.

Cooper sent similar sentiments on Instagram, thanking celebrities who lent a hand in rallying for the extension of the Broadway show.

He also mentioned the “CRAZY contributions” received from the aforementioned celebrity supporters, as well as Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade, Sara Ramirez, Pinky Cole, Debbie Allen, Al Sharpton and more.

“THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! Thank you God, you really be moving. Let’s keep going, y’all. #saveaintnomo,” he ended his caption.

Ain’t No Mo‘s extension emerges from Cooper’s open letter he posted to Instagram on Dec. 10 urging his peers and supporters to get “their hands on deck” with saving the show. In the letter he mentioned how Black plays are difficult “to sell” on Broadway and also how “traditional Broadway marketing doesn’t work for this kind of show.”

Cooper told People, “It takes time to build an audience when you don’t come to Broadway with pre-buzz, IP or a celebrity lead. Especially for shows of color who’s audiences don’t traditionally believe that anything on Broadway concerns them.”

He went on, “Marketing has to look different for us, it takes time. Artists who’ve come before me have worked hard on this, I’m glad to continue that fight, and I’m glad all of these amazingly generous people have joined us on the battlefield.”

Cooper added that it’s up to supporters to show up and fill seats if they really want to contribute to the show’s longevity.

“In the name of art, in the name of resistance, in the name of we belong here too, in the name of every story telling ancestor who ever graced a Broadway stage or was told they never could, BUY A TICKET and come have church with us. Radical Black work belongs on Broadway too.”

Supporters can purchase Ain’t No Mo’ tickets here.

Brittney Griner has issued her first statement since her return home following her release from a Russian prison. The 32-year-old posted a letter on Instagram thanking her supporters and those who fought for her freedom.

“It feels so good to be home! The last 10 months have been a battle at every turn. I dug deep to keep my faith and it was the love from so many of you that helped keep me going. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone for your help,” she wrote in the post, which was accompanied by a photo of her exiting the plane upon her arrival in the U.S.

The WNBA star then expressed her appreciation for her family, sports agency, teammates, and the WNBA as a whole. “I am grateful to each person who advocated for me, especially my wife, Cherelle Griner,” she continued. “My family, Lindsay Kagawa Colas and Casey Wasserman and my whole team at Wasserman, Vince Kozar and the Phoenix Mercury, the players of the WNBA, and my entire WNBA family, Terri Jackson and the WNBPA staff.”

Griner also acknowledged her Russian legal team, as well as activists, organizations, and elected officials, including President Joe Biden and his cabinet.

Griner served ten months in prison before being released by Russia in exchange for convicted arms dealer Viktor Bout, who was serving out a 25-year-sentence in U.S. federal prison.

Stephen "tWitch" Boss' grief-stricken mother breaks her silence to send him eternal love

Beloved freestyle hip hop dancer Stephen “tWitch” Boss’ mother is at a loss for words as she grapples with his sudden passing. With a message shared on social media, Connie Boss Alexander broke her silence on the tragedy that shocked hordes of fans.

“Family and friends, thank you for all the love, prayers, and encouragement,” began her note posted to her Instagram Stories on Thursday (Dec. 15). It continued, “Please know I see all the messages, texts, posts, and the phone calls. I can’t use words right now. Please know I will reach out when I can. Please continue to keep us in prayer. Stephen Laurel, your mother loves you to eternity and beyond.”

tWitch, as he was known to the world, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head on Dec. 13. His body was discovered inside a hotel room in Encino, California, located just one mile from his home. Allison Holker, his wife, alerted police to his disappearance shortly before he was located. TMZ reported that Holker told officers the “So You Think You Can Dance” alum left their home without his car and that she had been unable to contact him. Investigators later determined that he caught an Uber to the Oak Tree Inn and then switched his phone to airplane mode. Publicly, there remains a lot of unanswered questions surrounding his heartbreaking decision to take his own life. At most, a reported suicide note he left behind alluded to “past struggles” playing a role in his death.

The couple had been together since 2010 and shared two children, son Maddox and daughter Zaia, as well as Holker’s daughter, Weslie Renae, from a previous relationship. In a statement, his widow remembered him as someone who “lit up every room he stepped into. He valued family, friends, and community above all else, and leading with love and light was everything to him. He was the backbone of our family, the best husband and father, and an inspiration to his fans.”

He was also admired by millions of daytime television viewers who tuned in to “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”  from 2014 through its final episode in May. DeGeneres initially hired tWitch as her DJ, but by 2020, he had been promoted to co-executive producer.

Claudine Gay becomes Harvard University's first Black president

Harvard University announced Thursday (Dec. 15) that its 30th president will be Claudine Gay. This hiring makes her the first Black person and the second woman to lead the Ivy League school.

Gay, 52, currently serves as the university’s dean of the faculty of arts and sciences and will officially take office on July 1, 2023. She will replace Lawrence Bacow, who is stepping down at the end of this academic year to acquire more family time.

Harvard introduced the president-elect during an on-campus press conference in the Smith Campus Center.

“I am absolutely humbled by the confidence that the governing board has placed in me,” said Gay at the press conference.

During her remarks, Gay focused on the challenges and changes we face in modern-day society, including social, political, economic and technological, noting that “fundamental assumptions about how the world works and how we should relate to one another are being tested.”

“There’s less trust in institutions of all kinds and a shift on how people view them,” she said. “There’s endless access to information, but it’s actually getting hard to know what to believe. They’re new ways for people to speak their truths regardless of whether they hold positions of power. Then there’s a restlessness in this new generation to constantly push for something better, motivated by the belief that change is both necessary and possible, particularly when we take problems on together.”

Gay, the daughter of Haitian immigrants, is considered a preeminent voice regarding the issue of American political participation. She is also the founding chair of Harvard’s Inequality in America Initiative, which studies issues like the effects of child poverty and deprivation on educational opportunity and American inequality from a global perspective.

In a statement released by the school, Harvard’s chair of the search committee, Penny Pritzker, spoke highly of Gay’s personal and professional qualifications.

“Claudine is a remarkable leader who is profoundly devoted to sustaining and enhancing Harvard’s academic excellence,” said Pritzker, who also serves as the senior fellow of the Harvard Corporation. “For all her professional accomplishments, even more impressive are Claudine’s personal qualities — her quality and clarity of mind, her broad curiosity about fields beyond her own, her integrity and fair-mindedness, and her dedication to creating opportunities for others. She will be a great Harvard president in no small part because she is such a good person.”

R&B Singer Al B. Sure! Gives First Interview After Waking from 2-Month Long Coma

Radio Host Al B. Sure! Is opening up about his recent health scare.

The 54-year-old radio host gave his first interview this week, speaking to FOX New York after waking up from a 2-month long coma.

In the talk, he discussed gaining weight at the height of his career after winning the American Music Award for best artist and getting nominated for two Grammys. He began to make some changes after Quincy Jones told him to "please get your act together," prompting him to undergo bariatric surgery, which made him feel and look better.

However, things took a turn for the worse earlier this year, when he collapsed while working on his new music before falling into a coma for more than two months. Al B. (whose real name is Albert Joseph Brown III) shared that he suffered from multiple illnesses including renal failure to the point the doctors were considering putting him in hospice.

"I was intubated, I was on a ventilator with a tracheotomy, I mean, there were so many things going on," he explained.

Al B. managed to pull his strength together after enduring the near-death experience and is now on his road to recovery, he explained.

"What people don't truly understand, unless you've been through this type of medical journey, is taking for granted breathing, tying your shoes, speaking," said the singer-songwriter who also revealed he is a recipient of a new liver.

"I have what's called 'Chevron,' that's when they cut your chest open which is probably the first time I was actually talking about it…[I'm a] recipient of an amazing blessed new liver — and you know I'm going to treat it well," he said.

As his health crisis came to light, Al B. also received huge support from industry colleagues and high-profile individuals including Snoop Dogg, Halle Berry, and vice president Kamala Harris.

Getting back to business, Al is now working on writing a book about his life, creating a podcast, and producing new music. He also recently narrated a documentary about the life of the Rev. Al Sharpton entitled the Loudmouth.

"If I can influence or help or inspire someone else, I did my job," he said.

In October, Al B. shared an update on Twitter alongside a photo from the hospital following his recovery.

"A very humble thank you for the prayers my @WBLS1075NYC family. I'm alive, awake, on the mend," he wrote at the time. "Submissively grateful! #AllPraiseisDuetoAllah. I'll share more of my health experience soon in hopes to encourage us all to stay on top of our #HealthandWellness #GoSeetheDoctor ❤️ ABS!"

Naomi Ackie's American Accent For Whitney Houston Biopic Ruined Because Of False Teeth

Naomi Ackie donned a set of false teeth to portray Whitney Houston in a new biopic. Preparing for her role as the late superstar in new movie-musical "I Wanna Dance With Somebody", the 30-year-old actress spent weeks perfecting her American accent only for it all to go horribly wrong as soon as she put in her specially-made teeth.

"I had been working on the [American] accent for six months and thought I had it down, then suddenly putting in the fake teeth meant I had to learn it all over again," she explained during an appearance on "The Graham Norton Show".

However, she still managed to fool most of her castmates who "freaked out" when they realised she's British. Naomi added, "People freaked out when they heard my British voice. On set I would be talking as Whitney and then afterwards I was like, 'Bloody hell, that was a hard day innit!' "

The actress also explained that she totally immersed herself in the world of Whitney to play the tragic singer - who died aged 48 in 2012 - and she ended up having to stop listening to the star's music for a while. She added, "I had to take a break because I really was immersed in her world."

However, after some timed had passed Naomi felt able to revisit the superstar's hit. She went in, "Now I listen to her to remember some of the moments I had filming. It was such a formative time in my life and career that I look back on it fondly."

"The Graham Norton Show" airs on BBC One on Friday December 16 at 10.40 P.M. It is also available on BBC iPlayer.

Attorney General Garland Tells Federal Prosecutors To End Sentencing Disparities In Cases Of Crack Cocaine and Powdered Cocaine

On Friday, Attorney General Merrick Garland sent out a memo to all federal prosecutors telling them to end sentencing disparities in cases surrounding the distribution of crack and powder cocaine.

What’s long been an issue in the Black community has now made its way to get the justice system, the disparities of sentencing when it comes to crack cocaine v. Powdered cocaine.

It’s highly evident that crack cocaine possession has significantly impacted and led to the mass incarceration of Black people. For example, that possession of 28g of crack cocaine triggers a mandatory minimum five-year prison sentence, compared with 500g of powder cocaine, Axios reported.

Garland has come forward to prevent and hopefully end these disparities by instructing sentencing recommendations for crack cocaine defendants to be no different than defendants in powder cocaine cases.

“The crack/powder disparity in sentencing has no basis in science, furthers no law enforcement purposes, and drives unwarranted racial disparities in our criminal justice system,” DOJ spokesperson Aryele Bradford said in a statement, with the new guidelines to go into effect in 30 days.

The AG has also instructed prosecutors to reserve mandatory minimums for offenders who are violent or have a history of violence, as well as those who have “significant ties” to gangs or major drug trafficking organizations or which cause serious bodily injury or death, among other criteria, Axios reported.

The disparity in sentencing was a result of the 1986 Anti-Drug Abuse Act, which fueled the 100-to-1 disparity between the amount of powder and crack cocaine that results in a federal mandatory minimum sentence.

However, a little more than a decade ago, that act was diluted to 18-to-1. In 2018, the First Step Act made that reform retroactive.

President Biden was a senator at the time the 1986 act was created and supported it. However, during his presidency, he has since pushed to reverse it.
