Anthony Hopkins For GQ, October 2021-Men Of The Year Issue!

He's set to win The Legend Award at Wednesday's GQ Men Of The Year Awards.

And speaking to the magazine in the run-up to the ceremony, Sir Anthony Hopkins has urged budding actors 'not to waste their money' on acting school.

The Oscar-winning star, 83, insisted: 'Don't waste your money. They're failed actors that set themselves up as gurus.

He added when speaking to the magazine ahead of its 24th Men Of The Year ceremony: 'There's one very well-known actor with an acting class here in Los Angeles and he's the star of the show!

'And all these other students sitting around paying their fees and he's the star! He's on stage with them, interrupting them, being rude to them. No, you don't do that.'

Anthony also candidly discussed his decision to leave the National Theatre, explaining: 'That's one of the reasons I left the National Theatre – we had a particular director who was very picky.

'And that's one of the reasons that I would be angry. This was in my days of raging paranoia and I warned one director, ''You ever speak to me like that again I'll punch your face in''.'

He then quipped: 'Obviously, I don't do that any more.'

The screen legend also touched upon winning the Best Actor gong for his appearance in The Father during the Oscars in April.

He made headlines after seemingly failing to show up to the ceremony.

However, speaking on Lorraine in June, the iconic actor revealed that he 'didn't expect' to win, explaining: 'The contender was Chadwick Boseman, so I went to bed.'

Appearing alongside The Father director Florian Zeller, the screen star continued: 'Well what happened very briefly: I didn't expect to get it, at all. My phone went, and it was a text from my agent saying 'you've won the Oscar' at about 5 o'clock in the morning.'

He added: 'I couldn't believe it. I really couldn't believe it. I didn't expect it.'

Hopkins - who didn't give his acceptance speech until he woke up the next morning - went on: 'The next morning I made a little speech of thanks to the Academy and Chadwick Boseman.'

Sir Anthony became the oldest actor ever win an Oscar for his heart-wrenching performance as a man with dementia in The Father.

However, he skipped the awards show, held in Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, California, and didn't give his acceptance speech until waking up the next morning near Port Talbot.

In his April speech, he paid tribute to the late Chadwick, who many expected to win the gong for his performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.

Several “Real Housewives of Atlanta” stars showed support for NeNe Leakes after she shared the heartbreaking news that her husband, Gregg Leakes, is losing his battle with colon cancer.

“Praying for Gregg, @neneleakes and their family,” Kenya Moore wrote on her Instagram Story Monday. “Even through all our ups and downs, Gregg never treated me differently-he was always kind and respectful.”

Kim Zolciak also took to social media to share that she would be there for NeNe, 53, and her family through hard times — even though the former co-stars had their ups and downs on the show.

“Praying for you and your family,” Zolciak, 43, wrote, adding, “Sending you lots of love ️.”

“Praying for you all during thus [sic] difficult time,” Porsha Williams commented.

“So saddened by this news. Sending you and your family love, support and prayers. 🙏🏽❤🙏🏽,” Cynthia Bailey added.

Kenya Moore posted a throwback photo of NeNe and Gregg to her Instagram Story.

Shamari DeVoe, Marlo Hampton and Phaedra Parks took to the comments section of NeNe’s Instagram announcement with prayer-hand emojis to show their support.

Other Bravolebrities including “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Garcelle Beauvais and “Real Housewives of Potomac” star Gizelle Bryant also sent their love.

NeNe shared the heartbreaking news about her husband of two-plus decades earlier on Sunday, saying, “My husband is transitioning to the other side.”

Gregg, 67, was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2018, but it went into remission after he did six months of chemotherapy. In June, however, things took a turn for the worse, with NeNe confirming that his cancer had returned.

“I’d love for everybody to pray for Gregg, that would be beautiful. Pray for his strength,” she said at the time, adding, “And pray for me too.”

Nene and Gregg first tied the knot in 1997 but got divorced in 2011. They then remarried in 2013. They share a 22-year-old son, Brentt.

#HipHopNews: Lil Nas X Reveals ‘Montero’ Album Cover!

The metamorphosis is complete. Ahead of its release next month, Lil Nas X has revealed the cover art for his debut album Montero. The whimsical artwork shows the 22-year-old rapper after he emerges from his cocoon, completely naked and floating in a dreamlike world surrounded by butterflies, trees, and waterfalls.

Nas joked that the artwork was inspired by the levitating SpongeBob Squarepants meme.

The day before, Nas trolled Drake by recreating his Certified Lover Boy cover art featuring 12 pregnant male emojis instead of women.

Montero arrives Sept. 17 featuring the hit singles “Montero (Call Me By Your Name”) and “Industry Baby” with Jack Harlow.

Nas plans to share his truth on the 15-track album. “Creating this album has been therapy for me,” he said. “I’ve learned to let go of trying to control people’s perception of who I am, what I can do, and where I will be. I’ve realized the only opinion of me that really matters is my own.”

Rihanna Puts On A VERY Cheeky Display In Purple And Pink Lingerie As She Promotes Her Latest Savage X Fenty Collection!

She is officially a billionaire with a net worth of $1.7billion. And Rihanna is hoping to cash in again.

The 33-year-old Barbadian superstar put her assets on display to promote her upcoming Savage X Fenty collection called #UXTRA.

She put on a very cheeky display in a purple and pink crotchless lace thong along with the matching bra as the set retails for $80 and at a lower rate of $50 for VIP subscribers of the brand.

Rihanna completed the look with the pink 'caught up' ribbon body harness and matching 'don't cross me' full leg harness.

Her raven-colored tresses were worn down as she complemented her natural looks with dramatic make-up including a swipe of dark red lip.

This comes just days after the mogul teased fans with the return of her latest Savage X Fenty show for Amazon Prime.

On Thursday, the pop goddess was seen in a short clip to posted her lingerie brand's Instagram with the caption, 'Ya best get READY ready.'

The stylish teaser for volume three of the fashion show sees Rihanna, 33, in a number of slinky outfits including a revealing backshot where she appears to be wearing a thong.

Amazon Prime Video is streaming the hotly-anticipated fashion show, that will feature the latest Savage X Fenty collection.

According to a statement, the latest feature will combine 'fashion, dance, music, and iconic architecture' as the lingerie is worn by models.

It seems the Bajan beauty is upping the stakes on the production front, as the show will include the newest assortment of styles through 'subtle-yet-impactful scenic elements, lighting, and filming techniques'.

Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 3 will stream exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide beginning Friday, September 24.

Now in its third-consecutive year, the fashion experience is said to be aiming to 'challenge tradition and redefine sexy'.

Featuring an all-star line up of models, actors, performers, and more debuting the latest Savage X Fenty styles, the star-studded show promises to be 'visually stunning and epic.'

There is also said to be special performances from some of the biggest names in music.

Rihanna herself served as executive producer and creative director of the Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 3.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Rihanna is now officially a billionaire, as well as the richest female musician in the world, thanks to the huge success of her Fenty Beauty line.

The Umbrella hitmaker is now worth an estimated $1.7billion, Forbes reports, making her the second wealthiest female entertainer on the planet, behind Oprah Winfrey with $2.7billion

It was claimed the bulk of the popstar's fortune $1.4billion comes not from music, but from her 50 percent stake in her acclaimed cosmetics line Fenty Beauty - a joint venture with French luxury goods conglomerate LVMH - and worth $2.8billion in total.

Her $270million stake in the wildly successful Savage X Fenty lingerie line and her wealth from her 16 year recording career all make up the mogul's mass wealth.

Mogul Rihanna founded acclaimed beauty brand Fenty Beauty back in 2017 with a desire to 'make women everywhere (feel) included'.

It became a leader in providing diversity in the makeup industry when it first launched 40 shades for its foundation line.

The You Da One singer first put out her makeup line at Sephora, racking up sales eclipsing $100 million over the course of its first few weeks.

Will Smith Has casted the new Will for Fresh Prince drama reboot

Watch out, Carlton, because Will Smith has a very special new Banks in his life.

A year after plans were originally revealed for a drama reboot of Smith's classic sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the rapper-turned-TV actor-turned movie star has tapped newcomer and West Philadelphia native Jabari Banks as Bel-Air's Will.

Smith surprised Banks with the news in a video that can be seen below.

"You've got a fantastic road ahead of you, and I'm looking forward to being an asset for you in this process as you build out your life and build out your career," Smith told Banks, who called the opportunity "a dream come true."

Inspired by a 2019 viral video from Morgan Cooper, who serves as a director, producer, and writer on Bel-Air, the new series has already earned a two-season order from Peacock.

Here's the official description: "Set in modern-day America, Bel-Air is a serialized one-hour dramatic analogue of the '90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air that leans into the original premise: Will's complicated journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air. With a reimagined vision, Bel-Air will dive deeper into the inherent conflicts, emotions and biases that were impossible to fully explore in a 30-minute sitcom format, while still delivering swagger and nods to the original show."

Chrisette Michele Responds To Fans Calling For Her To Be “Uncanceled”!

Chrisette Michele is speaking out about being “canceled.”On Monday (Aug. 30), TV host Jawn Murray called for the “If I Have My Way” singer to be uncanceled after seeing the overwhelming support Kanye West received for his Donda album — even though he openly supported Donald Trump by endorsing him and rocking a MAGA hat and ran for president to try to sway the 2020 election.

Michele reposted Murray’s tweet and questioned why her career didn’t soar like her male counterparts after she sang at Trump’s inauguration. “I always wonder how to respond to this question,” she captioned the post.

“It’s actually the reason I don’t do interviews anymore. Being compared to Kanye & Travis [Greene] for the last 5 years. Watching them soar into the highest realms of stardom. Waiting on God's hand to show me exactly what my story will look like,” she added. “I’ve made a choice to stay full of gratitude and master peace, but today, this post has inspired me to allow the energy of comparison to enter my feed.”

The “Epiphany” singer then questioned what role her gender had in her being canceled. “Would you release new music if you were me?” she asked. “What would you sing about? Who would you sing to? Why? What does my role as FEMALE play in this story? What about my role as Christian? How about my role as it compares to Kanye & Travis?”

Michele ultimately sang at Trump’s inauguration to try to unite the country that was so divided at the time. However, a lot of people — especially in the Black community — wanted nothing to do with her or her music afterward. Following the performance, Spike Lee reportedly scrapped her song “Black Girl Magic” from his Netflix series “She’s Gotta Have It” because he didn't want to feel “misrepresented.” She also received death threats, lost a record deal and radio stations refused to play her music.

West, on the other hand, has been able to elevate his career — in both music and fashion. Donda, his latest LP, broke a Spotify streaming record and is the biggest debut of 2021 so far. His Yeezy shoes sell out within seconds during every release and his forthcoming collaboration with Gap is projected to bring in millions.

7 Black Men Executed In 1951 For Rape Granted Posthumous Pardons!

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam granted posthumous pardons to seven Black men who were executed for the rape of a white woman back in 1951.

On Tuesday (Aug. 31), Northam announced the pardons after meeting with descendants of the men, who were known as the Martinsville Seven, and their advocates. “These men were executed because they were Black, and that’s not right,” the governor said. “Their punishment did not fit the crime. They should not have been executed.”

“This is about righting wrongs. We all deserve a criminal justice system that is fair, equal, and gets it right — no matter who you are or what you look like,” Northam added.

Black man freed from prison 44 years after he was wrongly convicted of rape

The Martinsville Seven — Frank Hairston Jr., Francis DeSales Grayson, Booker Millner, Howard Lee Hairston, Joe Henry Hampton, James Luther Hairston, and John Clabon Taylor — were convicted of raping 32-year-old Ruby Stroud Floyd, a white woman who visited a predominantly Black community in 1949 to collect money for outfits she sold. The men were not given due process because of their skin color and were convicted and sentenced to death within eight days.

Four of the men were executed in an electric chair on Feb. 2, 1951. The remaining men were electrocuted three days later. At the time of the alleged incident, rape was considered a capital offense.

Men wrongfully convicted of rape and murder awarded with $75 million

Last December, descendants and advocates of the men asked Northam to issue posthumous pardons, citing unfair trials and unjust punishment. “The Martinsville Seven were not given adequate due process ‘simply for being Black,’ they were sentenced to death for a crime that a white person would not have been executed for ‘simply for being Black,’ and they were killed, by the Commonwealth, ‘simply for being Black,’” the advocates wrote in their letter to the governor.

In March, Northam abolished the death penalty in the state of Virginia, which had the second-highest number of executions in the country.

Elaine Welteroth exits 'The Talk' weeks after former co-host Carrie Ann Inaba!

The revolving door of co-hosts at "The Talk" continues to turn.

Elaine Welteroth is exiting the CBS daytime talk show after less than a year, executive producers of the show, Heather Gray and Kristin Matthews, confirmed to USA TODAY Tuesday. Welteroth's exit comes just two weeks after Carrie Ann Inaba announced her departure.

"It is an absolute honor for anyone, but especially a young Black woman, to occupy space on-air where our perspectives are largely underrepresented," Welteroth, 34, said in a statement obtained by USA TODAY.

She continued: "I’m proud of how I represented myself and my community. But as I always say: when the music changes, so must your dance! I will miss my talented co-hosts and crew and I wish them the very best. Thanks to all those who tuned in every day."

'It's been an honor': Carrie Ann Inaba exits 'The Talk' following extended leave

The "More Than Enough" author and former editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue joined the show in January as Eve's replacement. Welteroth is also a judge on Bravo's "Project Runway."

Welteroth's exit is the latest hosting shake-up. With her gone, "The Talk" is down to three permanent co-hosts: Sheryl Underwood, Amanda Kloots and Jerry O’Connell.

O’Connell joined "The Talk" in July as its first permanent male co-host to replace Sharon Osbourne, who left the show in March following a controversial on-air exchange about race with Underwood. Kloots joined the show in January, replacing Marie Osmond. Underwood, the longest tenured co-host, joined the show's second season in 2011.

In a joint statement to USA TODAY, Gray and Matthews said they are "grateful" for Welteroth's contributions.

"We wish Elaine all the best," the executive producers said. "We are grateful for her passion, enthusiasm, and insight she brought to the show daily. Her openness and meaningful conversations were attributes we admired and always appreciated."

Season 12 of the CBS show is scheduled to start in September.

Britney Spears’ Attorney Accuses Father of ‘Extorting’ $2 Million to Step Down!

Britney Spears said her father told her to “Gimme More” money, as lawyers accuse Jamie Spears of dragging out his agreement to exit as conservator of her multimillion-dollar estate with an extortion attempt.

via: Variety: The attorney, Mathew Rosengart, has been seeking since July to have Jamie Spears removed from his position of control over her finances. Earlier this month, Jamie Spears agreed that it would be best for him step down from the conservatorship, saying he did not want a public fight with his daughter. However, he did not provide a timetable for his resignation, and appeared to open the door to a negotiated resolution.

In a filing on Monday, Rosengart argued that Jamie Spears is seeking to use his leverage to compel his daughter’s estate to pay $1.3 million in attorneys’ fees, $500,000 to Spears’ former management company, as well as additional payments to Jamie Spears himself.

Rosengart’s filing makes it clear that he has no interest in negotiating Jamie Spears’ departure, and is looking instead to Judge Brenda Penny to order his removal at the next court hearing, on Sept. 29.

“The status quo is no longer tolerable, and Britney Spears will not be extorted,” Rosengart wrote. “Mr. Spears’s blatant attempt to barter suspension and removal in exchange for approximately $2 million in payments, on top of the millions already reaped from Ms. Spears’s estate by Mr. Spears and his associates, is a non-starter.”

Rosengart had earlier accused Jamie Spears of enriching himself at the expense of his daughter’s estate, and of “dissipating” her fortune. Jamie Spears has denied wrongdoing and defended his handling of her financial affairs.

“Having finally acknowledged that his time as Conservator should end, Mr. Spears is obligated to step down without condition and without seeking to extract anything further from his daughter,” Rosengart argued.

He has asked the court to appoint an accountant to replace Spears’ father as the conservator of her estate.

Breaking years of public silence on the matter, Spears blasted the conservatorship in an open court hearing on June 23, saying it was abusive and unnecessary. Her court-appointed lawyer, Samuel Ingham, withdrew from the case and Spears was permitted to hire Rosengart to replace him.

Jamie Spears continues to prove he ain’t sh*t.

DaBaby Meets With HIV Organizations After Homophobic Comment Controversy!

DaBaby is trying to do better! The rap star joined a virtual meeting last week to discuss HIV education in the wake of his homophobic Rolling Loud comments that sparked massive outrage earlier this summer.

According to Variety, DaBaby, joined leaders from the organizations Black AIDS Institute, Gilead Sciences COMPASS Initiative Coordinating Centers, GLAAD, National Minority AIDS Council, The Normal Anomaly Initiative, Positive Women’s Network-USA, Prevention Access Campaign, the Southern AIDS Coalition, and Transinclusive Group. During their private meeting, they discussed HIV history, education, and outreach, particularly in Black, LGBTQ, and faith communities.

Leaders of the nine organizations said in a joint statement, DaBaby was “genuinely engaged, apologized for the inaccurate and hurtful comments he made about people living with HIV, and received our personal stories and the truth about HIV and its impact on Black and LGBTQ communities with deep respect.”

“We appreciate that he openly and eagerly participated in this forum of Black people living with HIV, which provided him an opportunity to learn and to receive accurate information.”

DaBaby issued several apologies after being dropped from a number of festivals over his homophobic remarks. While it appeared that he was was on the road to being officially canceled, it looks like he found a new route to get himself right back on track.

Rose McGowan Slams Oprah Winfrey for Being as 'Fake as They Come'!

Rose McGowan is very publicly slamming Oprah Winfrey.

On Saturday (August 29), the 47-year-old actress and activist took to Twitter to speak out about her mistrust for the 67-year-old TV mogul, while including a photo of Oprah kissing disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein on the cheek, which was taken at the 2014 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.

“I am glad more are seeing the ugly truth of @Oprah. I wish she were real, but she isn’t. From being pals with Weinstein to abandoning & destroying Russell Simmon’s [sic] victims, she is about supporting a sick power structure for personal gain, she is as fake as they come. #lizard.” Rose tweeted.

Rose‘s tweet comes after a past interview of Oprah with Dolly Parton resurfaced on social media.

In the clip, Oprah brings up Dolly‘s plastic surgery and her battle with depression.

Many believed that Oprah brought up these topics in order to try and “embarrass” Dolly.

Years ago, Oprah was friends with Harvey before his sexual misconduct was brought to light. Rose has previously accused Harvey of raping her.

In January 2020, Oprah announced she would no longer be an executive producer on a documentary about Russell, which highlighted stories from his sexual assault accusers.

“First and foremost, I want it to be known that I unequivocally believe and support the women,” Oprah said at the time. “Their stories deserve to be told and heard. In my opinion, there is more work to be done on the film to illuminate the full scope of what the victims endured, and it has become clear that the filmmakers and I are not aligned in that creative vision.”

Tom Holland Shares Sweet Selfie With Zendaya For Her 25th Birthday

Tom Holland shared a sweet selfie on Instagram Wednesday of him, dressed in costume as the superhero, and girlfriend Zendaya from behind the scenes of their “Spider-Man” films.

“My MJ, have the happiest of birthdays. Gimme a call when your [sic] up xxx,” he captioned it.

The “Cherry” star and the “Euphoria” actress, both 25, confirmed their relationship in July when Page Six exclusively published steamy photos of them making out in a car after years of off-screen romance rumors.

Following their starring roles in 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” sources said Holland and Zendaya had started seeing each other.

“They’ve been super careful to keep it private and out of the public eye, but they’ve gone on vacations with each other and try and spend as much time as possible with one another,” an insider told People in July 2017.

At the time, the pair laughed off the report on social media.

“Wait wait…my favorite is when it says we go on vacations together HA! I haven’t been on a vacation in years! hbu @TomHolland1996 ???” Zendaya tweeted.

Holland responded, “@Zendaya Does the press tour count.”

The “Avengers: Infinity War” star dispelled the rumors once he was linked to longtime friend Olivia Bolton, but the alleged romance didn’t last.

The “Malcolm & Marie” star, for her part, also sparked new romance rumors with her “Euphoria” co-star Jacob Elordi after they were spotted getting cozy on numerous occasions between August 2019 and March 2020, but he’s now dating model Kaia Gerber.

Fans will get a closer look at Zendaya and Holland’s on-screen romance in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” out Dec. 17.

Judge Rules Against Defendants Using Ahmaud Arbery’s Past In Murder Trial!

Judge says Ahmaud Arbery’s past criminal history is not relevant to the actions that lead to his death.

Ahmaud Arbery was fatally shot while on a jog back in February 2020. Superior Court Judge Timothy Walmsley won’t allow the defendants lawyers to bring up Arbery’s past during the murder state trial as well as federal charges for hate crimes they face. This essentially would have put the slain Arbery on trial as we’ve seen many times before.

Three White men are accused of killing Arbery, a Black-man, as he ran through a Brunswick neighborhood in February 2020. The 25-year-old had previous issues with the law, but a judge ruled earlier this week it won’t be a factor because the suspects didn’t know about Arbery’s past record.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, in his ruling on Monday, Walmsley noted that the McMichaels knew nothing of Arbery’s past when they chased him down that day. “It is apparent that defendants’ intended use of the victim’s other acts is to engage in speculation as to why Arbery acted as he did,” the judge wrote.

Walmsley also said the defense was trying to get “clearly bad character and propensity evidence” before the jury that is unfairly prejudicial. “The character of the victim is neither relevant nor admissible in a murder trial,” the judge wrote.

“This is a good ruling for the prosecution,” said former Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter, who is following the case. “If that evidence had come in, it would have been damaging but not fatal to the state’s case. But since it doesn’t come in, it means the prosecution won’t have to play defense.”

The murder trial is set to begin in mid-October. Do you think the judge made a fair decision blocking Ahmaud Arbery’s past to be use in court?

Kanye West’s ‘Donda’ Headed For No. 1 With Biggest Week Of 2021!

DONDA is coming for the No. 1 spot. After much anticipation, Kanye West’s 10th studio album finally arrived Sunday and is already putting up big numbers. According to preliminary estimates from HITS Daily Double, the 27-track set is expected to debut with around 300,000 units in its first week. That would give it the biggest sales week of 2021, outperforming Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album Sour, which opened with 295,000 units.

Since DONDA was released on Sunday, which is typically the lowest streaming day of the week, that number could increase even more.

DONDA is currently No. 1 on Spotify and has topped the Apple Music charts in over 130 countries, the most No. 1 entries in history.

The long-delayed album finally arrived on Sunday, two days after Kanye’s listening event at Chicago’s Soldier Field, featuring appearances from JAY-Z, The Weeknd, Kid Cudi, Playboi Carti, Travis Scott, Lil Baby, Lil Durk, Young Thug, Don Toliver, Roddy Ricch, Lil Yachty, and more.

Kanye claimed that his label, Universal Music Group, released the album without his approval and that they tried to stop him from releasing “Jail pt 2” with DaBaby. However, the song was later added to streaming services.

After the album’s release, Chris Brown blasted Ye, calling him a “whole hoe” after he removed him from “New Again.” Soulja Boy also ripped Ye, claiming that he didn’t use his verse on “Remote Control.

You wanna Stay on Instagram? You’ll have to tell Instagram your birthday to keep using the app

If you haven’t given Instagram your birthday, it’s about to start asking for it a whole lot more — and it’ll eventually be required for you to use the app. Instagram started requiring that new users add their birthdates in 2019, but if you had an older account, it was possible to skate by without providing that info. Now it seems that’ll become increasingly more difficult.

According to the press release, Instagram will ask you for your birthday when you open the app, if you haven't already added it to your profile. You’ll be able to ignore it, but only up to a certain point — eventually, Instagram says, you’ll have to add your birthday if you want to keep using the app. Instagram also says that if it doesn’t have your birthday, it’ll ask for it before showing you posts that are marked as sensitive. It’s been blurring sensitive content for years, but now if you want to see it, your birthday will have to be on file with Instagram.

The company says these efforts are part of its work to make the platform safer for young people. In May, the company formally announced that it’s working on a version of Instagram for people younger than 13 — a feature that would obviously require the platform to know people’s ages. It’s also been working on other age protections, like making it so adults couldn’t DM minors who weren’t following them or by making accounts for people younger than 16 private by default. Instagram’s birthday support page also says it uses it to moderate ads. (For instance, people under 21 won’t get ads for alcohol.)

The company says, in the future, it’ll use its age detection AI to sniff out people who are lying about their ages. In July, Facebook had a blog post about this tech, saying it was analyzing comments on your birthday posts, such as “happy 21st” or “happy Quinceañera.” According to its press release, if someone says they’re above a certain age like 13 or 18, but the AI says otherwise, Instagram will have them verify their age using a variety of methods (though it doesn’t say exactly what this will look like).

Social networks have long asked you for your birthday, but having them required speaks to the growing need to make sure that kids are safe online and the feeling of invasiveness that can come with that. Snapchat users recently got a taste of the strangeness that can come when social networks have information you might not remember handing over: they discovered that the app knew the time and location they were born because they had given the info to Snapchat’s astrological profile feature — and then seemingly forgot that they’d done so. For Instagram users, though, this likely won’t be an issue. It’s going to be hard to miss the birthday information requests.
