Supermodel Adut Akech Covers ELLE’s August 2021 Issue!

Supermodel Adut Akech coverd the August 2021 issue of ELLE magazine, on newsstands July 27th. Akech opened up to ELLE about her childhood as a South Sudanese refugee, the bullying and racism she endured after emigrating to Australia as a child, what being named an Estée Lauder global brand ambassador means to her and how her she sees her modeling work as a step toward creating a world in which people like herself won’t have to question their worth: “I never, ever, in my wildest dreams, thought I would have achieved half the things that I have now. I do this for my little sisters. I do it for little Black girls all around the world. I do it for refugees. I do it for people who are not seen and not heard. That’s my responsibility.”

Akech was born on Christmas Day in 1999, somewhere along the route between her mother’s native South Sudan, where a civil war raged, and the Kenyan refugee camp they called home for nearly eight years: “I was a very switched-on kid,” she says over Zoom, draped in a vibrant orange scarf. “When you grow up in an environment like that, you don’t really have a choice but to be switched on.” But memories of having to pack quickly due to fears of kidnapping marauders are tempered by more innocent recollections of playing with a ball she and her cousins made out of rubber bands. “We were still kids at the end of the day,” Akech says.

On the bullying and racism she endured after emigrating to Australia at age 7: “It was the first time I was in a space with people who didn’t look like me, people who weren’t used to seeing people like myself. From a young age, I just told myself that I needed to grow a tougher skin to avoid all this outside noise, but also to accept that this is who I am. This is how God made me, and that’s not going to change anytime soon, or ever, to be honest.”

On how her she sees her modeling work as a step toward creating a world in which people like herself won’t have to question their worth: “I do this for my little sisters. I do it for little Black girls all around the world. I do it for refugees. I do it for people who are not seen and not heard. That’s my responsibility.”

On being named an Estée Lauder global brand ambassador: “I feel like this is my moment to show people—and to show the world— that yes, Black women are beautiful.”

On how the past year has given her a new appreciation for life: Despite checking off more career goals in a handful of years than most hope to achieve in a lifetime, Akech isn’t looking to rest on her laurels: “Last year opened my eyes and made me realize, (1) Don’t take anything for granted, and (2) our time in this world is not promised. Anything can happen.”

“No Place Like You, was inspired by the thought of knowing that you can build a house with all the finest materials in the world with the best of everything in it. But in reality it’s not these things that makes a house a home…it’s the love from that special someone.. and only when you’re with them are you truly home. When they say there is no place like home, they mean there is no place like you”.

Also in case you missed it, we caught up with After 7 for an interview last month. During our chat, we discussed the passing of group member Melvin Edmonds, the group’s history, and what to expect on the new album.

#HipHopNews: Method Man & Redman, Non-Pregnant Young M.A To Perform At 2021 National Cannabis Festival!

The COVID-19 pandemic brought the concert industry to an abrupt stop in March when the novel coronavirus started its global rampage.

After an 18-month hiatus, the organizers of the National Cannabis Festival (NCF) have returned with the fifth anniversary celebration at the RFK Campus in Washington, D.C.

According to a press release, headliners include Method Man, Redman, Young M.A (who is very much not pregnant), Afrobeat collective Antibalas and more.

“We are thrilled to bring the National Cannabis Festival back to D.C., the community, and fans who’ve been waiting since 2019 to celebrate in-person again,” NCF Founder Caroline Phillips said. “The cannabis community is ready to listen to good music, with good friends, while raising awareness of federal cannabis legislation and the work that activists are engaged in to advocate for greater equity, accessibility and comprehensive reform for the cannabis community.”

In addition to the music, the event includes four educational pavilions — Wellness, Policy, Culture and the Grow School — where attendees can participate in discussions on the medicinal benefits of cannabis, speak with medical professionals and dispensary owners and focus their minds with free yoga sessions. NCF will also host a wide range of exhibitors offering the “best cannabis accessories and lifestyle brands.”

The event is the latest in a long list of new tours and one-offs. Erykah Badu, Lil Baby and Lil Durk, Wu-Tang Clan, Run The Jewels, Cypress Hill, Z-Trip and Atmosphere are among the many, many artists scheduled to return to the stage this year.

The National Cannabis Festival takes place on August 28. New to the festival this year is a special Seniors Lounge, a place for our “golden buds” to gather.

General admission tickets for the 2021 event are available for $55. Admission bundles start at $70. Find more information here.

Charlamagne Lands Comedy Central Late-Night Show, Stephen Colbert Will Executive Produce!

Charlamagne Tha God and Stephen Colbert are teaming up for a late-night show on Comedy Central. The series, entitled Tha God’s Honest Truth with Lenard ‘Charlamagne’ McKelvey, is set to premiere on September 17, at 10 pm, and will be hosted by Charlamagne. Stephen Colbert is a co-creator/executive producer of the upcoming show. Viacom describes the 30-minute series as

“redemptively comedic, refreshingly unfiltered, and unapologetically Black, nothing is off limits.”

This isn’t the first time that Charlamagne and Stephen Colbert have worked together. The Breakfast Club co-host has appeared on Colbert’s own talk show multiple times. Both men also grew up in South Carolina and Colbert’s brother was a teacher at Charlamagne’s middle school, according to reports.

MTV Entertainment Group’s president and CEO Chris McCarthy will serve as a producer for the show. Charlamagne has also worked with Chris McCarthy before for a few different shows on MTV2. When speaking on his recent team-up with Colbert and McCarthy for his upcoming Comedy Central project Charlamagne said,

“This is the third talk show Chris McCarthy has done with me and those shows prepared me for this opportunity. My South Carolina brethren Stephen Colbert is the ultimate cosign in the late-night space and he wouldn’t cosign no bullsh*t! We are going to win an Emmy next year for best lighting direction I can feel it!!! For too long, the town of Moncks Corner, South Carolina has been underrepresented in late night. I look forward to all the ways in which the fearless, peerless Charlamagne is going to change the game.”

Maria Taylor Announces Departure From ESPN After Rachel Nichols Scandal!

“While she chose to pursue a new opportunity, we are proud of the work we’ve done together,” ESPN said in a statement.

ESPN has announced that Maria Taylor’s contract is ending, and an agreement on an extension could not be reached.

The sports channel said in a statement that Taylor’s last assignment was the NBA Finals telecast on Tuesday.

“Maria’s remarkable success speaks directly to her abilities and work ethic. There is no doubt we will miss Maria, but we remain determined to continue to build a deep and skilled talent roster that thoroughly reflects the athletes we cover and the fans we serve,” said Jimmy Pitaro, the chairman of ESPN. “While she chose to pursue a new opportunity, we are proud of the work we’ve done together.”

In a statement, Taylor said she is “thankful to Jimmy and all of my great teammates and friends at the SEC Network, College GameDay, Women’s and Men’s college basketball, and the NBA Countdown family— the people who believed in me, encouraged me, pushed me, and lifted me up.”

“Words are inadequate to express my boundless appreciation, and I hope to make them proud,” she continued.

Taylor had been at ESPN covering college and pro football and basketball since 2014 and most recently served as host of NBA Countdown. Her departure comes weeks after she was thrust into controversy over a leaked audio recording of ESPN host Rachel Nichols claiming the network gave Taylor the Finals hosting gig because of her race.

As previously reported, Taylor appeared to react to the audio leak via a post on her Twitter account that noted she had taken some punches but was “still in the fight.”

“During the dark times, I always remember that I am in this position to open doors and light the path that others walk down,” she wrote in a tweet with photos attached featuring happier professional days. “I’ve taken some punches but that just means I’m still in the fight. Remember to lift as you climb and always KEEP RISING.”

Taylor’s remarks came after Nichols offered her a public apology for the triggering comments she made on a hot mic.

On the recording, she said, in part, “I wish Maria Taylor all the success in the world — she covers football, she covers basketball. If you need to give her more things to do because you are feeling pressure about your crappy longtime record on diversity — which, by the way, I know personally from the female side of it — like, go for it. Just find it somewhere else. You are not going to find it from me or taking my thing away.”

She later apologized on her show “for disappointing those I hurt, particularly Maria Taylor” and expressed “how grateful I am to be part of this outstanding team.”

Taylor is reportedly being courted by ESPN rival NBC for some high-visibility positions at the network.

She had been in negotiations to extend her deal at ESPN, where she was reportedly offered $3 million a year. Taylor has potentially been offered the chance to host NBC’s high-rated Football Night in America show, host coverage of the Olympics and report for the Today Show.

According to a report from Fox News, Taylor could replace NBC Football Night in America host Mike Tirico, who is said to be eyeing the seat Al Michaels may be departing.

WOW! Billionaire Jeff Bezos Slammed After Thanking Amazon Workers For Funding His Space Flight!

Tuesday was an exciting day for Jeff Bezos and his rocket crew who successfully made it to space on his Blue Origin rocket.

After landing, the Amazon founder held a press conference to talk about his amazing experience. While speaking, he thanked his employees and customers for subsidizing his Blue Origin spaceflight, during which he and three others spent 11 minutes inside the “New Shepard” capsule after lifting off from the desert in Van Horn County, Texas.

“[I] want to thank every Amazon employee and every Amazon customer because you guys paid for all this. So seriously, for every Amazon customer out there, and every Amazon employee, thank you from the bottom of my heart, very much. It’s very appreciated.” Bezos’ comment rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Stars & Stripes journalist David Choi even retweeted the video of Bezos’ comments, remarking “I’d like a refund.” Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts ripped into the billionaire, repeating her call for a “wealth tax” and accusing Bezos and the company he founded, Amazon, of paying no taxes.

“Jeff Bezos forgot to thank all the hardworking Americans who actually paid taxes to keep this country running while he and Amazon paid nothing.”

Another said, “I will never get over how Jeff Bezos went to space while Amazon employees are using GoFundMe as healthcare.“

Now, labor groups and Amazon workers have claimed that the company offers its hourly employees not enough break times, puts too much work on them and has unsafe working conditions. Robert Reich, former secretary of labor under President Bill Clinton and a professor of public policy at University of California, Berkeley, wrote on Twitter that Bezos has crushed his attempts to make things right for decades:

“Amazon workers don’t need Bezos to thank them. They need him to stop union-busting – and pay them what they deserve,” Mr Reich wrote.

Tamar Braxton Slams Accusations of Getting Work Done After Showcasing Her New Look!

Tamar Braxton debunked surgery allegations on Tuesday, July 20, after the 44-year-old debuted a new look on Instagram while sporting a red two-piece ensemble. In the initial clip, captioned “You see this señorita with the flower in her hair✨❤️ #extraordinarytamar🙏🏼🌟,” the singer is seen smizing as the unidentified cameraperson slightly pans the lens downward to give fans a view of Braxton’s red-hot look.

Although it is unclear if and when the allegations occurred, Braxton took to her Twitter account to squash those claims.

The “Love and War” vocalist said as she pointed out her youthful appearance stems from family genes, “Ok….so… everyone don’t have to get work done to change [their] appearance to stay looking young and fresh..Don’t try me… look at my mother and sisters… I got the genes and you will DEAL.. #stayunderconstruction.”

Braxton followed that tweet by posting with the same video shared earlier in the day on her Instagram account, with the caption, “… & that’s that on that #ExtraordinaryTamar.”

As the former reality star’s tweet circulated on social media, many people didn’t buy Braxton’s “genes” story. A handful of them accused her of lying. One user tried to vouch for the mother of one by insinuating that when Braxton wrote the initial tweet, she meant to say she didn’t get any “bodywork” done.

“One thing about Tamar she going to lie 😢😂😂.”

“Tamar, we saw your pictures from back in the day. You got a new face, boo.”

“She’s referring to like.. bodywork right? Cause..”

“Maybe Genes is the name of their surgeon.”

“So she’s never had any cosmetic surgery? Ever?”

Earlier this year, Braxton captivated her fans by showing her snatched body on Instagram in order to commemorate her month-long birthday celebration. In the March 3 post, Braxton is seen wearing a two-piece black swimsuit donned with braids.

Braxton captioned the recording, “I’m grey.. but I’m GREAT I’m not broke.. but I’m not rich as I’m gonna to be I’m not perfect.. but I’m under construction… I’m not tired… I’m ready.. and I’ve been working on myself as soon as someone made me feel like I wasn’t good enough. ( that was my trigger& motivation) I worked every day until that wasn’t even a thought.”

She added, “It took me to be uncomfortable to change.. I find my strength in the uncomfortable space.. I now challenge myself to prove my mind wrong.. we become stronger that way, together as a union,” she said before talking more about her podcast, “Under Construction.”

Cardi B Reveals Why She's Not Having a Baby Shower for Second Child with Husband Offset!

Cardi B doesn't want too much party. During a surprise interview with live radio app Stationhead Tuesday, the pregnant rapper, 28, explained why she's not having a baby shower for her second child with her husband Offset.

"I'm not having a baby shower. That's why I did Kulture's birthday really, really big," she said. "I just get overwhelmed when I do these big birthdays and I just feel like the baby shower with Kulture's birthday is just too close. Just to see the same people over again, and it's like, not doing it."

Cardi and the Migos member, 29, share daughter Kulture, 3, and recently celebrated her July 10 birthday with a lavish fairytale-themed party. The big bash included an outdoor petting zoo, a balloon tunnel, Disney princesses, a towering birthday cake, a ball pit, bowling lanes and more.

Mom and daughter matched in pink princess gowns, while Offset sported a black and white three-piece suit without a jacket. The family arrived in a Cinderella-inspired horse-drawn carriage, and the birthday girl entered her celebration on a pony.

Though the Grammy winner hasn't disclosed her due date, the proud mom is savoring every moment as a family of three. On her daughter's third birthday, she posted a sweet throwback photo from when Kulture was just one month old.

"Forever my little baby 💛⭐🥺My cancer queen 👑," Cardi captioned the Instagram post.

Also during her appearance on the Stationhead show, the "WAP" rapper revealed how she told her husband that she was expecting.

After she began showing pregnancy symptoms two weeks before the Grammys — Cardi said she noticed her "mouth started to get watery" and she was experiencing headaches and carsickness — she simply told her husband, "I think I'm pregnant, bro!"

She later confirmed the pregnancy after taking a test. Offset is also dad to daughter Kalea, 6, and sons Kody, 6, and Jordan, 11, from previous relationships.

"We just started laughing like, 'Lord, we have so much to do,' " she recalled.

The star also expressed her excitement for her baby on the way, saying, "There is something so dear about this pregnancy and I feel like I'm starting a new chapter, and I'm happy about that."

Cardi revealed the pregnancy news while performing with Offset and Migos at the BET Awards in June. After the trio finished "Straightenin," Cardi joined the group for "Type S---." Appearing onstage in an embroidered Dolce & Gabbana bodysuit, a sheer panel in the abdomen exposed her burgeoning belly.

"#2! ♥️" Cardi captioned an Instagram photo announcing the happy news that went live simultaneously with the performance. She and Offset wed in September 2017.

First Black Girl Duo Wins International Debate Competition at Harvard – and with an Undefeated Record!

For the first time in the history of the Harvard Debate Council, two Black girls from Atlanta have made history as the first Black female duo to win the annual summer debate competition at Harvard University.

Each summer, the Harvard Debate Council, one of the oldest campus organizations at Harvard University, hosts a summer residential program for hundreds of gifted youths from over 15 countries around the world who converge on campus for two weeks of intensive study, which culminates in a program-wide debate tournament. This year’s residency and competition were held virtually due to COVID-19 protocols.

Jayla Jackson, 16, is a rising junior at Holy Innocence Episcopal School. Emani Stanton, 17, is a rising senior at North Atlanta High School. Both girls are current members of the Atlanta-based Harvard Diversity Project, an initiative founded by Harvard’s award- winning debate coach and author Brandon P. Fleming. In 2017, Harvard accepted Fleming’s proposal to establish the Diversity Project as a means to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus.

Fleming recruits underserved Black youth in Atlanta with little to no prior debate experience. He trains them every weekend for one year in Atlanta leading up to the Harvard summer program, exposing them to higher-level academic disciplines. In four years, Fleming has raised over one million dollars to enroll over 100 African-American students into the Harvard debate residency on full scholarship. All four cohorts trained by Fleming’s unique curriculum have gone on to win the international debate competition at Harvard.

This year, Jackson and Stanton secured the 4th consecutive championship for the Atlanta-based team with an undefeated 10-0 record. The topic of debate was, “Resolved: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization should substantially increase its defense commitments in the Baltic States.”

Fleming emphasizes to his students that the program is “bigger than debate.” He states,

Louisiana Father Fatally Shot By Teen Who Snuck In To See His Daughter!

A Louisiana father and businessman is dead after confronting a teenager who snuck into his home to see his young daughter.

Dezmon Hamilton, 34, was fatally shot on July 18 after engaging in a shootout with Nicholas Mcquirter, 17.

The two argued after a neighbor alerted the homeowner that someone was using a ladder to climb through a second-story window into his house. Hamilton discovered that the teen was there to visit his 14-year-old daughter.

Hamilton confronted the teen, and at some point, the argument turned violent. Both Hamilton and Mcquirter pulled out guns and started shooting at each other.

When police arrived on the scene, Hamilton had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead. The teen was taken to an area hospital, where he has been hospitalized since Sunday.

Once Mcquirter is released from the hospital, he faces charges of second-degree murder, illegal possession of a stolen firearm, and illegal use of a weapon.

Police Chief David McDavid said it is unclear who fired the first shot.

Scooter Braun Files for Divorce from Yael Cohen After 7 Years!

It’s over. Scooter Braun filed for divorce from his wife, Yael Braun. Braun, 40, retained celebrity divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, whose previous clients include Kim Kardashian, Angelina Jolie and Ryan Reynolds.

The court documents filed in Los Angeles Wednesday make it clear there is a prenuptial agreement in place between the businessman and the F–k Cancer co-founder, 34.

Braun is seeking joint custody of his and Cohen’s three children: Jagger, 6, Levi, 4, and Hart, 2. He has also agreed to pay his estranged wife spousal support.

Braun — the fiery music manager who discovered Justin Bieber and has been at the center of a very public spat with Taylor Swift after buying the rights to her early work — married Cohen in July 2014.

Despite publicly celebrating their anniversary on Instagram on July 6, just days later, we revealed the couple were splitting up.

“They’re friends,” said an insider, adding Braun and Cohen were still living together.

While sources said at the time that there were no plans to divorce, we’re told that Braun was the one to pull the plug on his marriage in the end.

Page Six also revealed this month that Braun had secretly checked into an “intense psycho-spiritual retreat” months before his separation from Cohen.

Sha’Carri Richardson Stars In New Beats by Dre Commercial

On Tuesday, Richardson appeared in the new Beats by Dre commercial, which not only promoted their new Beats Studio Buds, but also revealed that Kanye West’s album “Donda” would be released this upcoming Friday. West’s single “No Child Left Behind” was used as the background music for the ad.

Beats by Dre showed full support of Richardson despite her suspension from the Olympics by writing “Sha’Carri doesn’t need you to let her do anything,” in the description box on YouTube. Fans also applauded Richardson for landing the gig with the audio products manufacturing company.

One person said, “They thought they did something when they took her out the olympics but the man above had other plans 💪🏾💪🏾…” Another wrote, “when one door closes….what they said again????🔥

Another fan pointed out an interesting relation between the “Jesus Walks” rapper, Richardson, and both of their mothers. The person wrote, “Isn’t that amazing how his album is named after his mom and shacari can’t run because of an honest mistake of smoking because she lost her mom. This song beautiful.”

Richardson is currently fulfilling her one-month suspension from track competition after testing positive for marijuana. Within hours of the 21-year-old’s fans learning the news, Richardson explained on the “Today” show that her mother’s death was what led her to use marijuana as a coping mechanism. After winning the women’s 100 meters final at the Olympic Trials in June, she revealed that her biological mother had passed away just the week before.

She said later of her suspension that she was “Not making an excuse or looking for any empathy” and that she will “take responsibility for her actions,” but also urged her supporters not to judge her. Before it was reported that Richardson would be banned from competing in the Olympics she had already accepted her punishment and taken part in a counseling program, which reduced her suspension from three months to one. She did not explain what was the cause of her mother’s passing.

As for West, he lost his mother Donda West in 2007, and anyone who’s been a follower of West knows that the Chicago native has taken her loss hard for some time. He’s even gone so far as to blame himself for her death. The day before Donda passed away she had undergone multiple cosmetic surgeries, getting a liposuction, a tummy tuck, and a breast reduction.

In 2008, the coroner told People magazine, “The final manner of death could not be determined. Multiple post-operative factors could have played a role in the death. The exact contribution of each factor could not be determined. There was no evidence of a surgical or anaesthetic misadventure.”

As for the Beats by Dre deal, the specifics of Richardson’s partnership with the company have yet to be unveiled.

Eric Clapton Says He Won't Play Vaccine 'Discriminated' Concerts!

Eric Clapton is taking a stand against venues in the United Kingdom that will require guests to provide proof of vaccination to enter.

Old Slow Hand's announcement comes a day after U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered COVID vaccine certificates to be mandatory in England for crowded entertainment venues, like nightclubs, starting this fall.

"Following the PM's announcement on Monday the 19th of July, 2021, I feel honor bound to make an announcement of my own: I wish to say that I will not perform on any stage where there is a discriminated audience present," Clapton writes. "Unless there is provision made for all people to attend, I reserve the right to cancel the show."

PM Johnson's order will be effective starting in late-September, once all adults in the nation have had a chance to receive two doses of the life-saving vaccine.

Clapton has been critical of the U.K.'s handling of the pandemic and repeatedly assailed lawmakers for imposing lockdowns over fears of the virus.

The multi-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has promoted a variety of discredited theories about COVID, which he says he was first exposed to through YouTube and then the embattled chat app Telegram.

Clapton himself is at high-risk for COVID-19, given his age (76 years old) and the fact that he's living with a variety of health issues, including emphysema. The guitar legend was vaccinated earlier this year with the AstraZeneca shot. He later complained that the shot caused him a myriad of complications, due to his peripheral neuropathy.

Clapton is preparing to tour the U.S. from September 13 - 26. His next scheduled U.K. shows are for the spring of 2022.

The U.K. just lifted a number of restrictions on public gatherings, despite a rise in COVID cases attributed to the delta variant of the novel coronavirus.

PM Johnson made the vaccine announcement from self-isolation after contact with a member of his administration who recently tested positive for COVID. Johnson was hospitalized with the disease last year.

COVID vaccines have been found to be effective in preventing transmission of the virus and mitigating severe symptoms.

White Woman Gets Probation & Anti-Hate Classes For Spitting On Black Protestor!

In white privilege news, a woman has been granted probation after spitting on a Black woman during a Black Lives Matter protest.

The disgusting assault was captured on camera back in January in Hartford, Connecticut. Activist and Power Up Manchester founder Keren Prescott attended a BLM demonstration with a friend, where the two were chanting “Black lives matter.” That is when 45-year-old Yuliya Gilshteyn responded by screaming, “All lives matter.” This exchange led to a heated argument, with Prescott warning Gilshteyn to stay six feet away from her because she was not wearing a mask. That is when the violent white woman spat in Prescott’s face.

Gilshteyn was arrested and initially charged with breach of peace. However, Hartford State’s Attorney Sharmese Walcott upgraded the charge to a hate crime after reviewing the footage. In addition, Gilshteyn was charged with third-degree attempt to commit assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, and risk of injury to a child.

The racist learned her fate on Wednesday, with Hartford Superior Court Judge Sheila Prats sentencing her only to a probation program for first-time offenders. Gilshteyn also received 100 hours of anti-hate courses that must be fulfilled within two years. Once she has finished the classes, all charges against her will be dropped, and her criminal record will be wiped clean.

During the hearing, Gilshteyn called her attack “completely out of character” and apologized to Prescott. However, an emotional Prescott says that the light verdict was a “slap on the wrist.”

“When she attacked me, and the police didn’t believe me, that was white privilege. When the police held me back, and she was led away, that was white privilege.”
