Black Ambition, Pharrell Williams’ newest venture dedicated to cultivating Black and Latino entrepreneurs, is the winner of the impact investing category of Fast Company’s 2021 World Changing Ideas Awards.
Williams launched Black Ambition last December 2020, with Louis Vuitton Men’s artistic director and founder of Off White Virgil Abloh is onboard as a member of the Black Ambition advisory team. Black Ambition will act as a non-profit initiative providing a bridge to success for Black and Latinx entrepreneurs who are launching start-ups in tech, design, healthcare, and consumer products.
Beyond leveling the playing field and fostering the ingenuity, determination, and resilience of underrepresented entrepreneurs by rewarding innovation, Pharrell Williams hopes the ventures will enrich and empower Black communities touched by funded talents.
“We’re saying to ourselves, ‘Why are we in the position that we’re in?’ ” Williams says. “Because we don’t necessarily have a voice, because we don’t own enough businesses. It’s time for us to be part of the American pie chart.”
“Our aim is really to dismantle the barriers that stand in the way of equitable futures for these communities,” says Darla Vaughn, head of brand marketing at the organization behind it, I Am Other, a collective of creative talent founded by Pharrell Williams.
As part of the launch, Williams announced two prize competitions – The Black Ambition HBCU (historically Black colleges and universities) Prize of $250,000 and The Black Ambition Prize of $1 million – which culminate in one major national event.
“White VC founders and those in private equity represent north of 80% of people who receive funding, while African Americans represent less than 1%. Whether it’s a $15,000 prize or a $250,000 prize, if founders win something, they’re going to get the mentorship and strategic scaffolding,” Williams told Forbes. ”We are setting founders up for the odds to be in their favor, that’s the game-changer here.”
“Part of what Black Ambition is going to do is say ‘here are folks that are investable and will be creating the next big companies of the future’,” Willa Seldon, partner at Bridgespan, a philanthropic and nonprofit consulting firm partnering with Black Ambition, said. “Venture capitalists are becoming more diverse but there’s still not capital going to those new venture players. Mainstream VCs are also interested in doing more about this, It’s also a huge market opportunity.”
In addition to financial awards, the entrepreneurs will receive mentorship and feedback as well as access to peer networks and expert connections. All screened applicants will receive access to online resources, information about business resources, and high-level feedback. Semifinalists will also receive cohort-based mentorship. Finalists will receive personal mentorship, opportunities for media exposure, and introductions to venture capitalists, angel investors, and accelerator partners.
Black Ambition is backed by Adidas, Chanel, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, The Rockefeller Foundation, Tony’s Chocolonely and the Visa Foundation. Individual investors include venture capitalist Ron Conway and BuzzFeed co-founder Jonah Peretti.

After stepping out to brunch with rapper Ray J, Wendy Williams sparked rumors on social media that she was dating the younger man. That’s not exactly how anyone would describe a man they were at all romantic with or attracted to. NeNe Leaks Reveals Husband Gregg Leaks’ Cancer Has Returned!
Former Real Housewives of Atlanta star NeNe Leaks revealed that her husband Gregg Leaks is currently back in the hospital because his cancer returned.
Yesterday, NeNe disclosed that Gregg had to have surgery during an Instagram Live session with The Jasmine Brand.
“He’s in the hospital. He’s been in the hospital; tomorrow it’ll be a week,” NeNe shared, “I’m sure he’ll be home in about a week or so. He had to have surgery, [because] his cancer did return.”
Gregg was diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer in 2018. However, after treatment, the cancer went into remission for a period of time.
“He’s had this surgery before, and he was in the hospital for about 15 days,” NeNe explained, adding that she anticipates him needing the same length of time in the hospital to recover.
The situation has been “difficult,” according to NeNe, and the battle has caused a transformation in her husband; she said he is “super small.”
“If you’ve ever been around somebody who’s had cancer before, he’s different,” she shared. “He’s different.”
“I’d love for everybody to pray for Gregg; that would be beautiful. Pray for his strength,” NeNe said, adding, “And pray for me too.

Christina Aguilera Shows Her Support of Britney Spears amid Her Ongoing Conservatorship Battle!
Christina Aguilera has spoken out on behalf of her former Mickey Mouse Club costar Britney Spears amid the national media uproar surrounding Spears's ongoing conservatorship battle.
Yesterday, Aguilera, who costarred with Spears on the children's television series from 1993 to 1994, took to Twitter to share her thoughts on the 13-year conservatorship under which Spears has been subjected by her father. Among her sentiments shared during a nearly 30-minute court address, Spears expressed her frustration at the lack of compassion from those spearheading and enabling the conservatorship, noting the particularly disheartening psychological and emotional abuse she's endured. In Aguilera's note shared on social media, the "Fighter" singer included a throwback photo of the two from their time on the hit Disney show.
"These past few days I've been thinking about Britney and everything she is going through," Aguilera tweeted. "It is unacceptable that any woman, or human, wanting to be in control of their own destiny might not be allowed to live life as they wish.

Other celebrities including Justin Timberlake additionally spoke out in public support of Spears. Last week, Timberlake took to Twitter to share his own feelings about Spears's conservatorship and what she's been going through. "Regardless of our past, good and bad, and no matter how long ago it was… what's happening to her is just not right. No woman should ever be restricted from making decisions about her own body," he shared on Twitter.
The much-anticipated virtual conservatorship hearing took place on June 23, during which Spears addressed her concerns directly for the first time. An additional court hearing regarding the conservatorship will take place next month.
NFL Video Proclaims 'Football Is Gay' In Wake Of Carl Nassib Announcement!
A week after Carl Nassib's groundbreaking announcement that he's gay, the NFL produced a video in support of his message.
The video released Monday is simple, consisting strictly of white text on a black screen. The message is provocative and represents a full embrace of Nassib as the first active NFL player to announce that he's gay.
It starts simply with the words: "Football is gay."
It continues with drumming and cheering in the background:
"Football is lesbian. Football is beautiful. Football is queer. Football is life. Football is exciting. Football is culture. Football is transgender. Football is heart. Football is power. Football is tough. Football is bisexual. Football is strong. Football is freedom. Football is American. Football is accepting. Football is everything. Football is for everyone."

It concludes with an image of the NFL shield emblazoned in the rainbow colors of Pride month before promoting the Trevor Project. The Trevor Project is a charity that seeks to prevent suicides among LGBTQ youth. Nassib initially promoted the charity in his coming out announcement.
"LGBTQ+ youth with at least one accepting adult have 40% lower risk of attempting suicide," the message reads.
The NFL has obviously had gay players before Nassib. But none prior publicly challenged the anti-gay sentiment that exists in locker rooms and sports culture by coming out while they're still playing. Nassib's announcement didn't come without risk.
He was immediately met with support from the Raiders, the NFL, the NFLPA and some players around the league. A week later, the NFL continues to formally embrace Nassib's message with its own message of acceptance and representation.

Kim Kardashian is taking her talents to Team USA with a new SKIMS collaboration for the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
The co-founder of the underwear, loungewear and shapewear company made the announcement on social media on Monday sharing that SKIMS is designing the undergarments, pajamas and loungewear for female athletes. She even shared her own connection to the Olympic games through stepfather Caitlyn Jenner.

Rosie O'Donnell, TV's original 'Queen of Nice,' weighs in on Ellen DeGeneres controversy!
Remember when Rosie O'Donnell was known as the "Queen of Nice"?
At the time, the Sleepless in Seattle alum was starring in her own daytime talk show, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, known for its giveaways to regular people and high-profile guests like Tom Cruise. It was, basically, The Ellen DeGeneres Show before it existed. Flash-forward a few years and O'Donnell, who ended her show in 2002, had a much different reputation, one for speaking out, after joining The View.
On a new episode of SiriusXM's The Jess Cagle Show, O'Donnell was asked if being saddled with that label early on had affected her negatively. After all, DeGeneres has said that in her own case, being seen as someone who's kind to everyone had come back to "bite her in the ass" after she was accused of presiding over a toxic work environment full of, according to former employees, fear, racial insensitivity and sexual misconduct.
For O'Donnell, the answer was yes.
"Not in the way that Ellen's talking about, I think, but, you know, I said the day it came out, look at this the 'Queen of Nice' and a couple of years, it's going to be the queen of lice, the queen of fried rice, you know, the queen of, we don't like her anymore," she said. "I have an understanding of the cycle of show business and kind of what happens in people's careers and when enough is enough. And oftentimes, people don't know that, you know, I think I have a, a good balance of both in my life of the importance of, you know, of both. And it's hard to maintain."
O'Donnell feels for someone in that position.
"It's hard to do, especially when you're doing ... a show like that, but, you know, I don't think it was the 'be kind' thing that, that got her," she said. "I think that's ... an oversimplification, but it was a lot of things and it was complicated and I'm glad that she's, you know, going to be finished and she can get some time to herself to just, I mean, it's a huge kind of strange thing to be on a show like that and have all that attention on you. And she had it for, like, 19 years. So, you know, it's a tough thing."
DeGeneres has hosted her weekday show since 2003, but she announced in May that she'll end it in 2022. She apologized and let go of three producers after the allegations against her, but she said that they hadn't affected her decision. She's simply ready "to take a break from talking."
O'Donnell said in August 2020 that she sympathized with DeGeneres.
"I have compassion, even though, you know, I hear the stories and I understand," O'Donnell said. "I think she has some social awkwardness."
Michael Strahan’s Ex-wife Arrested for Violating Protection Order and Harassing Her Ex Girlfriend!

Page Six reports that Jean Strahan, 56, violated an order of protection by allegedly appearing at the Upper West Side home of Marianne Ayer Friday night.
Jean has reportedly been charged with criminal contempt for allegedly breaking the order of protection.

Ayer, 57, has accused Jean of grand larceny, disorderly conduct, harassment and forcible touching, according to TMZ, which cited court documents filed earlier this month. Ayer also alleged that Jean threatened her with a plastic gun and kicked her German Shepherd, the report said.
Michael and Jean divorced in 2006, with the former footballer later claiming that his ex abused their twin daughters.
We previously reported that Strahan had filed for primary custody of his teenage twin daughters after accusing Jean of abusing them.
The Giants legend said his ex physically and emotionally abused teenage fraternal twins Sophia and Isabella.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, last year Michael petitioned the court seeking to strip Jean of primary custody and that he be granted primary custody.
Page Six reports that they settled on a shared custody arrangement late last year.
A source close to Michael said his case was dismissed after Jean “agreed to all of the terms proposed by Michael.”
“He continues to not pay child support more than a year after [Jean filed] the case. He agrees there is additional money owed but refuses pay it,” the source from Jean’s side said.
A source on Michael’s side claimed that Jean “refuses to accept payment on those [child support] adjustments unless Michael agrees to modify the terms of the New Jersey Divorce Decree and continue support payments for many years after the children reach adulthood.”
For The First Time, Documents From the 1964 “Mississippi Burning” Murders of Civil Rights Activists Have Been Made Public!
For the first time, 57 years after their deaths, never-before-seen case files, photographs, and other materials documenting the investigation into the infamous slayings of three civil rights workers in Mississippi are finally exposed to the public.
The assassinations of civil rights activists James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner in Neshoba County in 1964 caused national indignation and aided in the adoption of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. They were later featured in the film “Mississippi Burning.”
In 2019, the previously sealed documents, dating back to 1964 and 2007, were transferred from the attorney general’s office to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. They are presently on display in the William F. Winter Archives and History Building in Jackson, where they have been since last week.
The records include cases, memoranda, research notes, and federal reports by informants and testimonies by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. According to an announcement from the Mississippi Department of Archives, there are also pics of the exhumation of the victims’ remains and subsequent autopsies, along with aerial photos of the burial place.
The collection is kept in three catalog records: Series2870 contains the research files of the Attorney General, Series2902 contains the FBI notes, and Sery2903 contains the photos.
They were caught on a traffic charge by a deputy sheriff in Philadelphia, who subsequently released them once a mob was alerted.
The FBI was ordered by President Lyndon Johnson to assist local police officers in searching for the missing men. Johnson’s assistant, Lee White, told him that the men had “disappeared from the face of the earth.” Members of Civil Rights concerned that the KKK had been nabbed. The then governor of Mississippi claimed that their disappearance was a falsehood and the Sen. Jim Eastland told President Johnson that it was an advertising stunt.
Finally, on August 4, 1964, their bodies were discovered buried on a Klansman’s remote property. Chaney had been heavily beaten and all three men had been shot at point-blank range.
In the 1967 case, nineteen persons were indicted on federal counts. Seven people were found guilty of infringing on the victims’ civil rights. None of them lasted longer than six years.
The investigation was renewed by the Mississippi Attorney General’s office in 2004. Edgar Ray Killen, a 1960s Ku Klux Klan leader and Baptist minister, was convicted of manslaughter in June 2005 as a result of this.
Witnesses stated during Killen’s state prosecution in 2005 that on June 21, 1964, he proceeded to Meridian to pick up carloads of klansmen in order to ambush Schwerner, Chaney, and Goodman, ordering some of the klan members to carry plastic or rubber gloves. Witnesses alleged Killen then went to a funeral home in Philadelphia as an alibi while the fatal attack was taking place.
In 2018, Killen died in prison. In 2016, Mississippi’s then-Attorney General, Jim Hood, pronounced the investigation ended.
Kyle Massey of ‘That’s So Raven’ Charged With Felony for Immoral Communication With Minor
Kyle Massey, who starred on the Disney Channel shows “That’s So Raven” and “Cory in the House” in the 2000s, has been charged with one count of immoral communication with a minor, according to court documents filed in June.
The felony charge was filed on June 14 in King’s County, Wash. The charge comes after Massey was sued in early 2019 for allegedly sending explicit photos, texts and videos to a 13-year-old girl. The lawsuit was for intentional infliction of emotional distress, harmful matter sent with intention of seducing a minor, attempting to commit a lewd act with a minor and annoying or molesting a minor.
In the lawsuit, the unnamed girl alleged she met Massey when she was four years old and kept in touch with him because she was interested in a career in entertainment. According to the lawsuit, Massey became close with the girl’s family and indicated that she should move from Seattle to Los Angeles to live with him and his girlfriend in Los Angeles. The girl and her mother alleged in the lawsuit that Massey “held himself out as a father figure” to the girl, and contact increased in November 2018 after the girl indicated she was interested in a role on a rebooted version of “Cory in the House.” About a month later, Massey allegedly requested to be the girl’s friend on Snapchat, and shortly after sent her “numerous sexually explicit text messages, images and videos.” The suit says the girl is suing Massey for at least $1.5 million.
According to court documents, Massey failed to show for his arraignment on Monday in King’s County. His representatives did not return Variety’s request for comment.

Diplo’s ex-girlfriend Shelly Auguste claims the DJ pursued her when she was only 17 and exposed her to an STD during consensual adult sex.
According to court documents obtained by Radar, Shelly made the bombshell accusations as part of a countersuit she filed against the DJ. In the suit, Diplo’s ex, with who he admits to having a brief relationship in 2019, says he contacted her on Twitter when she was underage.
He reportedly sent her explicit photos and asked for nude photos in exchange. Shelly claims they exchanged explicit photos for months before she moved to Los Angeles in 2018.
At the time she was 21. In court documents, Shelly says she heard a rumor about Diplo having Herpes and questioned him about it. He reportedly became upset with the question and stopped talking to her for months.
The eventually reconciled and Shelly decided to let Diplo take her virginity.
She accuses him of filming the encounter without her permission. Flash forward to July 2019, Shelly went to one of Diplo’s shows in Vegas. She claims he tried to get her to have a threesome, but she refused.
Shelly says she contracted chlamydia and believes she got it from Diplo since he was her only sexual partner at the time.
