Tessa Thompson for Town and Country - February 2021!
“Sylvie’s Love” star Tessa Thompson covers the February 2021 issue of Town & Country magazine.
Here are some excerpts from the interview!

On portraying the kind of love story she never thought would be shown (in Sylvie’s Love): “We haven’t necessarily gotten to see ourselves as the romantic leads, and when we have, particularly in period pieces, there’s less focus on the interpersonal, like how hard it is to be two humans trying to love each other. There’s a lot of emphasis on historical context, which is, obviously, wildly important. I was conflicted as to whether it would work, whether you could tell a story like that.”

On stepping outside of her comfort zone: “I think that’s why I like what I do. I’ve always felt a little afraid of what happens when we get too comfortable, that we’re not growing. Maybe I’m a masochist or maybe I’m a sucker for the discomfort of the first squeak.”

On hoping to inspire others: “…there’s invariably people in the room that have been silenced. I remember a distinct moment on set. A squeak just came out of me, I didn’t even mean for it to, and then I could see the secret little smile on some of the women around the room, and you realize that there’s a choir of wheels waiting to squeak together. It emboldens folks, and you realize you have support and you’re not squeaking just on your own behalf. You’re squeaking for everybody.”
The Issues is on newsstands now!

Phil Spector, Infamous Famed Music Producer Convicted In Slaying, Dies At 81!

Phil Spector, one of the most influential and successful record producers in rock 'n' roll, who generated a string of hits in the early 1960s defined by the lavish instrumental treatment known as the Wall of Sound, but whose life was upended when he was sentenced to prison for the murder of a woman at his home, died Saturday. He was 81.

The cause of death was complications of COVID-19, daughter Nicole Audrey Spector said.

Spector had been serving a prison sentence since 2009 for the murder of Lana Clarkson, a nightclub hostess whom he had taken to his home after a night of drinking in 2003. Police found her slumped in a chair in the foyer, dead from a single bullet to the head.

Spector scored his first No. 1 hit when he was still in his teens. With the Teddy Bears, a group he formed with two school friends, he recorded the dreamy ballad "To Know Him is to Love Him." Released in August 1958, it sold more than 1 million records after the group appeared on the TV show "American Bandstand," with Spector playing guitar and singing backup.

After learning the ropes as a record producer, Spector became a one-man hit factory. Between 1960 and 1965, he placed 24 records in the Top 40, many of them classics.

His 13 Top 10 singles included some of the quintessential "girl group" songs of the era: "He's a Rebel," "Uptown," "Then He Kissed Me" and "Da Doo Ron Ron" by the Crystals, and "Be My Baby" and "Walking in the Rain" by the Ronettes.

For the Righteous Brothers, he produced "Unchained Melody" and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling," a No. 1 hit that became the 20th century's most-played song on radio and television, according to BMI.

Spector single-handedly created the image of the record producer as auteur, a creative force equal to or even greater than his artists, with an instantly identifiable aural brand.

"There were songwriter-producers before him, but no one did the whole thing like Phil," songwriter and producer Jerry Leiber told Rolling Stone in 2005.

Leiber, who died in 2011, and Spector served a brief but crucial apprenticeship together at Atlantic Records.

Spector's signature was the Wall of Sound, perfected at Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles, where he worked with engineer Larry Levine, arranger Jack Nitzsche and a team of musicians nicknamed the Wrecking Crew.

With dozens of musicians and backup singers packed into Gold Star's cramped quarters, Spector layered multiple guitars, basses and keyboards over one another and applied a shimmering gloss of strings. This sonic wave assumed even grander proportions when channeled through Gold Star's resonant echo chambers.

The Wall of Sound profoundly influenced a host of producers and rock groups, from the Beach Boys to Bruce Springsteen. "He was everything," Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys told an interviewer for the British documentary "Endless Harmony: The Beach Boys Story." He called Spector "the biggest inspiration in my entire life."

Harvey Philip Spector was born on Dec. 26, 1939, in the Bronx.

After the Teddy Bears disbanded in 1959, Spector turned to producing and found a mentor in Lester Sill, who had helped Leiber and his partner, Mike Stoller, get started in the music business. Sill arranged for Spector to work with the two men at Atlantic, where their use of strings and heavy instrumentation became part of his repertoire.

Spector's domestic life, along with his career, eventually came apart. After his first marriage broke up, Ronettes lead singer Ronnie Bennett became his girlfriend and muse. He married her in 1968. But she divorced him after six years, claiming in a memoir he held her prisoner in their mansion.

#RHOA: Porsha Williams Responds To ‘Side Piece’ Claims Against Her Mother!
Porsha Williams finally opened up about the dynamic of her blended family on The Real Housewives of Atlanta. On the latest episode, she sat down with her mom and half-sister Lauren and shared what it was like growing up in a co-parenting household and how it affected her future relationships. But she took to social media recently to defend her family's honor after online trolls began calling her sister and stepmother "side pieces."

Having been on the show since season six, Porsha has remained transparent as fans have followed her journey. She started the show as a married woman to former NFL player Kordell Stewart. The then-couple enjoyed a lavish lifestyle, while other housewives and viewers noticed controlling behavior from Kordell. By season seven, Porsha was dealing with the harsh reality of Kordell filing for divorce. Over the years, she has dated on and off-screen while enjoying her single status. But, all that changed when Dennis McKinley came into the picture. Porsha was smitten by the hot dog shop owner and they moved quickly in conceiving their daughter and getting engaged. But things went left when Dennis admitted to cheating on Porsha during her pregnancy. The two have had an up-and-down relationship since, with frequent breakups in between.

On Sunday's episode, Porsha met with her mom and sister Lauren to talk about her pattern of unstable relationships and the possibility of it stemming from her childhood. She admitted how her father, the late Hosea Williams II, was divorced from her mother and remarried to Lauren's mom, and asked her mom for co-parenting advice. Porsha became emotional over how differently she and Lauren experienced their father growing up. With Porsha's parents divorcing when she was three, Lauren enjoyed morning forehead kisses from their late father, and Porsha cried after realizing she didn't experience the same. She admitted how she entered into a pattern of "abusive relationships," and her father passed away before she could ask him for dating advice. But after sharing the family bonding moment onscreen, some negative trolls took to her family's Instagram comments to refer to them as "side pieces" and other shady remarks Porsha took time to address in a video rant.

“Some people have been going on my sister’s page and I want y’all to get the f*ck off my sister’s page. Okay?” Porsha declared. “Don’t go to my sister’s page, don’t go to my momma’s page, definitely don’t bring your a** on my page. Don’t come on here talking about my family period.” She even claimed to know who was behind the fake pages leaving the negative comments. “And I think I have an idea who is behind these fake pages talking sh*t about my family, tryna make my mom feel bad," Porsha added. "Saying that my mom was tryna make my stepmom look like a side chick. No way in the world.”

While confirming there was "no side chick" situation between her parents, she told "whoever this is that’s bringing this into this, don’t do it because the devil ain’t gon work with this one. We’re family and we’re gonna always be family.” Fans wonder if she thinks another housewife is behind the fake pages.

#NewMusic: Ariana Grande, Doja Cat, & Megan Thee Stallion Team Up On ‘34+35’ Remix!
After teasing the mystery collaboration earlier in the week, Ariana Grande unleashes the official “34+35” remix featuring Megan Thee Stallion and Doja Cat.

The trio turns up the heat on the explicit bedroom banger off Ariana’s chart-topping album positions. Doja drops some raunchy rhymes (“I want that 69 without Tekashi”) before the Hot Girl delivers a scorching verse of her own.
“Dive in the water like a private island / 34, 35, we can 69 it,” Meg raps. “And I been a bad girl / But this pussy on the good list.”
In November, Ariana released a video for “34+35,” the second single off positions following the title track. The album also features another collaboration with Doja Cat (“Motive”).

And there may be even more collabs to come. Doja recently hinted that Ariana may appear on her upcoming album.
Before Christmas, Ariana announced her engagement to boyfriend Dalton Gomez and released her Netflix documentary, “Excuse Me, I Love You.”

#HipHopNews: Bow Wow’s Packed Houston Show Amid Covid-19 Pandemic Has Fans Worldwide Angry!
Bow Wow‘s latest performance has social media equal parts confused and upset.
The “Like You” rapper was in Houston on Friday (January 15) along with Meek Mill at Clé Houston as part of a celebrity birthday weekend. While Bow wasn’t the only artist performing inside the packed venue, fans quickly pointed out the lack of social distancing and lack of masks. Currently, Houston has a 20 percent positivity rate for COVID-19 and has set numerous records in the past week for the number of new cases.

Zach Despart, a writer for the Houston Chronicle, wrote on Twitter, “#Houston has a 20% positivity rate and they’ve discovered the more contagious UK COVID strain here. Risk that to see Bow Wow?”
Currently, Texas has seen a massive spike in COVID-19 cases across the board, particularly in large cities such as Houston. As of Saturday (January 16), Harris County had reported 3,413 new cases of COVID-19 in the area and 38,655 confirmed new cases since January 2. Per the city’s COVID-19 dashboard, the city has nearly 19,000 active cases of COVID-19.

The recent string of celebrity pop up performances in clubs across the country can widely be blamed due to the pandemic. As touring and more came to a halt last March, the music industry posted a reported $30 billion loss in regards to cancelations, venue spaces not being used and more. Artists have instead side-stepped coronavirus concerns by performing and holding large gatherings such as birthday parties and album releases, all in the name of securing the bag.

In Bow Wow’s case, fans were vicious not only to clown the multi-platinum rapper but also to question risking their health while the world is still in the midst of a pandemic.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Reportedly Have “Been Living Apart for a Year, Also Their Marriage Did Get “Downright Toxic”!
Despite no actual paperwork being filed or official announcement being made to the press confirming their divorce, that hasn't stopped a whole lot of sources surrounding Kim Kardashian and Kanye West from dishing to the press about exactly what went wrong with their relationship.

So far there's been no information from the two central figures involved since the news first broke last week, but there has been an endless supply of anonymous intel. A source told Us Weekly on Friday that the couple has been keeping their distance from each other for the sake of their four children. “Kim and Kanye had no option but to live apart in the end because the communication between them had gotten so downright toxic,” an insider told the outlet. “They went into the latter part of 2020 with the very best of intentions and wanted to find a way to get along when they spent time together. But it reached the point where the bickering turned to nasty blowups and confrontations, and since neither of them wanted the kids exposed to that type of hostility, they [stayed] apart.” Kanye has reportedly been living primarily at the family's Wyoming ranch, while Kim stays with the kids at their Hidden Hills, California mansion.

And while she hasn't even begun the formal process of legally ending her marriage, Kim is apparently already ready to move on. A source told E! News that with the final season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians behind her and the drama over her impending divorce starting to settle, "Kim wants to feel at peace going into this new chapter of her life and is focused on herself and her children." And if you've noticed the reality star has started clocking more hours at the gym and in Bible study, that's apparently all part of her plan "to feel strong mentally and physically." The source added, "She has been very busy with her business, which has been a blessing. She's really focusing on the kids and their happiness as well."

Naturally, Kim has the total support of her family, too. "All of the sisters are aware of the situation and are very supportive," the source said. "They all love Kanye like a brother but agree it's best they part ways." And even Kim and Kanye have apparently made peace with the situation as the source reported that they, "have no bad blood and they are very cordial. He's focusing on his world and she is focusing on her world."

Aaliyah's Estate Updates Fans on Bringing Late Singer's Music to Streaming Services!
Aaliyah fans will have to wait a little bit longer before the late R&B icon's full music catalog is available on streaming services.
The Aaliyah Estate took to social media on Saturday (Jan. 16) -- what would've been the late singer and actress' 42nd birthday -- to provide an update on when the world might have access to more of her music digitally.

"We hear you and we see you. While we share your sentiments and desire to have Aaliyah's music released, we must acknowledge that these matters are not within our control and, unfortunately, take time," Aaliyah's estate wrote. "Our inability to share Aaliyah's music and artistry with the world has been as difficult for us as it has been for all of you. Our priority has always been and will continue to be Aaliyah's music."
While her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing But A Number, is widely available on major streaming services, the singer's estate has held back the majority of her remaining catalog, which includes her 1996 follow-up, One in a Million, and her 2001 self-titled album.

"In the meantime, however, we are working diligently to protect what is in our control -- Aaliyah's brand, legacy, and intellectual property," the estate continued. "In doing so, we will continue to release unique and exciting projects to keep Aaliyah's legacy and light shining. While we understand this may be challenging, we need the support of the fans Aaliyah loved so dearly, until we can resolve all the issues in freeing her music. Undoubtedly, we understand how frustration can lead to angry and disappointment. However, we ask all of you for your continued support and love as we aim to achieve these goals for all of you and our babygirl. We appreciate you."
The Aaliyah estate's last update on the subject was on Aug. 25, 2020, which marked the 19th anniversary of her tragic death by plane crash in 2001 at age 22. In a statement, the estate claimed it had commenced communication with "various record labels" regarding the status of the singer's catalog, including "its availability on streaming platforms in the near future."

Aaliyah's music catalog has been under the purview of her uncle and founder of Blackground Records, Barry Hankerson.
Fans have long demanded the release of the singer's music, and there have been numerous false-starts along the way. In 2017, a greatest-hits collection of her music titled Ultimate Aaliyah was pulled just hours after appearing on iTunes and Apple Music. In 2019, a tweet from an account seemingly belonging to Hankerson teased that the singer's full discography would be made available for streaming on Aaliyah's birthday last year, but the day came and went with no update.

#RIP! Evangelist Duranice Pace Of The Anointed Pace Sisters Dies At 62!
Evangelist Duranice Pace, a member of family gospel group, The Anointed Pace Sisters, passed away from health complications on January 14, 2021. She was 62 years old.
Pace grew up in Atlanta, where she sang with her 9 siblings—8 girls and 1 boy–at her father, Murphy Pace Jr.’s, church. She spoke of her upbringing to Voyage ATL in March 2020, saying, “I got started when I was five years old. I was inspired by my father, who was a professional quartet singer for Gospel Starlights and my mom, who sang during praise and worship [for] what was then known as testimony service at church.” She then added, “My father would have rehearsal every Wednesday in our living room with his singing group, and my siblings and I would peep in on their rehearsals.”

The Anointed Pace Sisters released their first studio album, It’s Morning Time, in 1992, on which Duranice sang both alto and soprano. The group went on to share 6 more projects, including My Purpose and It’s Already Done. Duranice’s unique style of gospel was inspired by musical films and Broadway plays.
In addition to singing, the late figure toured the world as a preacher. According to Music Crowns, she traveled to “South Korea, Las Vegas, California, New York, London, Italy, Australia, Japan and Switzerland,” sharing the gospel and lifting spirits worldwide.
In 2013, Duranice, along with her sisters, was featured on an episode of Iyanla: Fix My Life. The singer and preacher shot to viral fame in 2017, after a clip of her singing to her family on Thanksgiving began to make rounds on social media. She also was interviewed by Steve Harvey in 2019 for his eponymous daytime talk show, on which she also performed.

The Pace family matriarch, Mother Betty Ann Pace, passed away in July 2020. Supt. Murphy Pace Jr. and Murphy Pace 111 died in 2008 and 2011, respectively. Duranice is survived by her siblings, Phyllis, June Pace–Martin, Melonda, Dejuaii, Leslie, Latrice, Lydia, Lashun, as well as her son, Demarcus Wardell Love.

“I’m inspired because I love people, and it makes me happy to see people smile,” Duranice said during an aforementioned interview. “This is why I call my business a healing ministry because people ask me to help heal them and make them feel better. I know it’s not coming from me, but from God and I’m so thankful that I can help touch people’s hearts.”

With time, the classic figure has evolved to reflect real, successful women. In fact, Barbie’s Inspiring Women Series specifically celebrates women who have made history, creating dolls that pay homage to everyone from Frida Kahlo to Amelia Earheart and Rosa Parks. Now, the franchise has revealed its lates honoree: Dr. Maya Angelou.

The Black doll is dressed in a floral print floor-length dress and matching head wrap, similar to the styles Dr. Angelou donned in real life. The doll also holds a replica of her memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
“Our efforts include a commitment to spotlight more Black role models who are female, and now, we are introducing a doll that honors Dr. Maya Angelou, author and activist who used her voice and unique writing style to connect with people and inspire generations,” Barbie's manufacturing company Mattel said in a statement.
“Dr. Maya Angelou had a multi-hyphenated career and numerous awards and accolades, including over 50 honorary doctorates and a Presidential Medal of Freedom. Wendy Williams Calls Ex-Husband Kevin Hunter A ‘Serial Cheater’!
Wendy Williams is opening up about her ex-husband Kevin Hunter's infidelity.
During a recent interview with Extra, the 56-year-old talk show host revealed new details about her ex's pattern of cheating. “Kevin cheated on me while I was pregnant with my son,” she shared, explaining that she chose not to divorce him at the time because of their son, Kevin Hunter Jr., now 20.
“I didn’t want him to leave me by myself,” Wendy said, noting that even then she knew their marriage wasn't going to be ’til death do us part.”
“Kevin was a serial cheater. Kevin had different mistresses. This last one was the one he had the longest term relationship with,” she said, referring to Kevin's alleged longtime mistress, Sharina Hudson.

As fans know, Wendy filed for divorce in April 2019 around the time that Kevin welcomed a child with Sharina.
"Kevin has a daughter," Wendy told New York Times Magazine in August 2019. "Kevin had a major indiscretion that he will have to deal with for the rest of his life. An indiscretion that I will not deal with," she added. "I never thought that I would be in this position. I’m a very forgiving person, but there’s one thing that I could never be a part of, and that one thing happened."

The former couple's divorce was finalized in January 2020.

Despite Kevin's multiple indiscretions, Wendy told Extra "I don't regret falling in love with Kevin and I definitely don’t regret getting the best divorce attorney I could… and fighting tooth and nail to get everything out of that divorce."

Karl-Anthony Towns tests positive for COVID-19!
After COVID-19 has devastated his family, Karl-Anthony Towns announced on Friday night that he had contracted the coronavirus himself.
The Minnesota Timberwolves star — who already lost his mom and six other family members to the coronavirus — revealed he had contracted the coronavirus just hours before they were supposed to host the Memphis Grizzlies in Minneapolis.
That game was postponed by the league, marking the 13th postponement so far this season. All but one of those has come in the last week.

Towns, he wrote on Twitter, is now isolating.
“I pray every day that this nightmare of a virus will subside and I beg everyone to continue to take it seriously by taking all of the necessary precautions,” Towns wrote on Twitter. “We cannot stop the spread of this virus alone, it must be a group effort by all of us. It breaks my heart that my family, and particularly my father and sister continue to suffer from the anxiety that comes along with this diagnosis as we know all too well what the end result could be.”
Towns, Timberwolves president of basketball operations Gersson Rosas said, is one of two people who returned positive tests within the organization in the past two days.
“For him to have to go through this … it’s heartbreaking,” Rosas said, via Chris Hine of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “It hurt. Karl is the most important part of this organization. For what he’s gone through and Karl Sr. has gone through, it’s heartbreaking.”

Towns lost seven family members to COVID
Towns suffered perhaps more than anyone else in the sports world last year.
The 25-year-old’s mom, Jacqueline, died in April due to the coronavirus. Jacqueline, a nurse, was placed into a medically induced coma — something that first prompted Towns to urge Americans to start taking the pandemic seriously.
He later revealed that six other family members, including his uncle and his grandma, had also died due to the coronavirus.

Naturally, basketball didn’t seem very important to him after that.
“I don’t even recognize most of my other games and years I’ve played and how I felt those days,” Towns said last month after dropping a double-double in their season-opener. “If I can be honest with ya’ll for a second, I mean, I don’t really recall or really care. I only understand what happened from April 13th on.
“Because you may see me smiling and stuff, but that Karl died on April 13. He’s never coming back, I don’t remember that man. You’re talking to the physical me, but my soul has been killed off a long time ago.”

Towns, who is in his sixth year in the league, has played in just four games this season for Minnesota while dealing with a lingering wrist injury. The former No. 1 overall pick averaged 26.5 points and 10.8 rebounds per game last season.
The NBA postponed three more games on Friday due to the pandemic, bringing the grand total up to 13 less than a month into the 2020-21 season. All but one of those postponements came within the last week — which prompted the league to introduce new health and safety protocols.

Despite Towns’ and others’ pleas, the pandemic is raging throughout the United States like never before. The country recorded more than 238,000 new cases on Thursday alone, according to The New York Times, and nearly had 4,000 new deaths. More than 4,400 people died on Tuesday, an all-time record.
“It’s a lesson for all of us,” Rosas said, via ESPN’s Malika Andrews. “Basketball is a microcosm of society right now ... This virus is powerful.”
Towns then ended his post with a pledge to his family.

“To my niece and nephew, Jolani and Max, I promise you I will not end up in a box next to grandma and I will beat this,” he wrote.

Army Vet Charged With Attempted Murder For Shooting Black Teen At Pro-Trump Rally In Iowa!
A white military veteran has been charged with attempted murder for shooting and wounding a 15-year-old Black girl during a pro-Trump rally at the Iowa Capitol last month.

The New York Post reports that Michael McKinney, 25, fired his gun into a car full of teenagers after the Trump supporters got into with the teens over politics. He told police he fired in self-defense. The four unarmed Black girls were all aged 16 and under, according to We Are Iowa.
According to an Associated Press investigation, the girls were called racial slurs by the Trump supporters during the tense encounter. The protesters accuse the girls of harassing and threatening them, starting the confrontation between the two groups.

The Trump supporters surrounded the girls’ car, and the girl put the car in reverse, hitting a pickup truck. That was when McKinney fired at the vehicle, he told officers.
The Army vet, who was heavily armed and wearing body armor at the rally, has posted his support for the Proud Boys on his social media. He has made anti-Black Lives Matter statements online as well.
The victim, who was shot in the leg, was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

If convicted, McKinney faces up to 25 years in jail. He remains behind bars on a $500,000 bond.
