Stevie Wonder and Sons for Odda Magazine - Fall/Winter 2020/21!

The Black Lives Matter movement is the perfect example of how critical creating an open dialogue with our teams is. Too many of us in the majority have been living in a bubble and have had blinders on to the reality facing our BIPOC friends and colleagues. Profound change for humanity comes from all sorts of starting points. It is up to us to do the work to really try to understand and empathize with the struggles that those around us face on a daily basis. And more than that, not just be passive bystanders when we see racial injustice being practiced in front of our now clearer vision.

While bringing this issue to life, I had the pleasure of meeting people I admire – not just for what they do, but what they say and who they are. Oscar-nominated actor Timothée Chalamet is one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars, and not just for his skills as an actor. His curious mind, open-hearted world view, and overall generosity of spirit made him the perfect person to interview the legendary musician and ambassador of peace, Stevie Wonder. In this issue, the men discuss Wonder’s time with Martin Luther King, the current state of the world, and how the people in power need to change their behavior. Wonder also looks to the future, in the form of his son Kailand Morris, who joins in on the conversation. He gives his own perspective on the BLM protests, and discusses how giving back has granted him a new outlook on life and why the fashion industry needs to do better when it comes to its role in climate change.

Trump Says He and Melania Will Quarantine After Top Aide Hope Hicks Tests Positive For Coronavirus!

President Donald Trump said late Thursday night that he and the first lady would begin a quarantine process after top aide Hope Hicks tested positive for coronavirus.

“The First Lady and I are waiting for our test results. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process!” Trump tweeted after earlier suggesting that he may quarantine.

Trump’s tweet came minutes after the White House disclosed his schedule for Friday, which includes meetings, a roundtable with supporters and an evening campaign rally in Florida. The White House didn’t comment on whether the president’s quarantine would result in events being canceled.

After NBC News and other outlets reported on Hicks’ positive test, Trump himself confirmed it Thursday night in an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity. He also said that he and first lady Melania Trump had just been tested and were awaiting results to come either Thursday night or Friday.

“She did test positive. She is a hard worker, a lot of masks, she wears masks a lot. She tested positive. I just went out with the test, we will see,” Trump said. “We spend a lot of time, the first lady just went and got a test also. Whether we quarantine, whether we have, we don’t know.”

He added: “We will see what happens. Who knows?”

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines say people should stay home and quarantine if they might have been exposed to the virus. The agency says people should quarantine for 14 days. Two weeks from Thursday is Oct. 15, the date of the second presidential debate between Trump and Democratic rival Joe Biden.

Hicks, who has been known to spend a lot of time with Trump, had traveled with the president to the debate Tuesday night in Cleveland. She was seen not wearing a mask.

Trump, 74, himself rarely wears a mask and has mocked Biden, 77, for often wearing face coverings.

The Trump campaign referred questions to the White House. A White House spokesman issued a statement about the administration’s Covid-19 protocols.

“The President takes the health and safety of himself and everyone who works in support of him and the American people very seriously,” Judd Deere, the spokesman, said in a statement. “White House Operations collaborates with the Physician to the President and the White House Military Office to ensure all plans and procedures incorporate current CDC guidance and best practices for limiting COVID-19 exposure to the greatest extent possible both on complex and when the President is traveling.”

Hicks’ positive test was first reported by Bloomberg News. Bloomberg also reported that Hicks had traveled with Trump to a rally Wednesday night in Minnesota. The New York Times reported that the White House knew about Hicks’ condition Wednesday night, and that she is under quarantine.

NBC News reported that while Hicks had tested negative Wednesday morning, and had not shown symptoms before the Minnesota trip, she started showing slight symptoms Wednesday evening. She quarantined on Air Force One on the way back from the campaign event. Hicks received her positive results Thursday morning.

Trump made a brief fundraising stop in New Jersey on Thursday.

The latest revelations come as coronavirus cases reach nearly 7.23 million in the United States, according to a Johns Hopkins University tally. Worldwide, the virus has infected about 34 million and killed more than 1 million. At least 206,971 have died in the U.S.

Hicks, 31, is among the highest-ranking people in Trump’s orbit to have reportedly tested positive for the coronavirus.

In July, Trump’s national security advisor, Robert O’Brien, tested positive for the coronavirus. At the time, the White House said that O’Brien was experiencing “mild symptoms” and was “self-isolating and working from a secure location off-site.”

“There is no risk of exposure to the President or the Vice President. The work of the National Security Council continues uninterrupted,” the White House said in a July statement.

Other administration officials have previously been diagnosed with the coronavirus.

In May, Vice President Mike Pence’s press secretary, Katie Miller, tested positive for Covid-19, as did a personal valet for Trump, who is responsible for serving the president his meals. Kim Guilfoyle, a top Trump campaign figure and girlfriend to Donald Trump Jr., also had tested positive and recovered.

Hicks, one of Trump’s favorite aides and a former White House communications director, rejoined the administration earlier this year to work as an assistant to Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and senior advisor. Between her White House stints, she landed some lucrative gigs, including a top role at Fox News parent Fox Corp.

#BABYBARBZNEWS: Nicki Minaj Welcomes First Child With Husband Kenneth Petty!

Nicki Minaj is a new mom! She welcomed her first child with husband Kenneth Petty on Wednesday (Sept. 30) in Los Angeles, Billboard can confirm.

The baby's name and sex has yet to be revealed. New parents Minaj and Petty are also coming up on their first wedding anniversary on Oct. 21.

The 37-year-old queen of the Barbz announced her pregnancy with a series of baby bump pictures on Instagram July 20, which included a glorious professional shot from famed photographer David LaChappelle.

"Love. Marriage. Baby carriage. Overflowing with excitement & gratitude. Thank you all for the well wishes," she captioned one of the pregnancy announcement images at the time.

In court documents obtained by TMZ last July, a judge granted the request of her 42-year-old husband, who registered as a sex offender in California, to modify his pre-trial release conditions. This allowed him to not only travel with his wife but also be present with her for the birth of their baby if it occurred outside of his curfew hours.

#RHOA: Madina Milana Accuses Nene Leakes Of Cheating On Husband With French Montana!

A reality star has defended Wendy Williams in her revived feud with Nene Leakes — by accusing Leakes of cheating on her husband with rapper French Montana.

Leakes and the chat show queen had recently buried the hatchet after a long rift, but their beef boiled up again this week after Williams suggested in a TV interview that Leakes only quit “Real Housewives of Atlanta” because she likes “dramatic attention” — and said that a spin-off about her life would be “boring.”

After Leakes returned fire on social media, Williams pal Madina Milana — a star on “Growing Up Hip Hop: New York” — attacked Leakes, claiming she got sexy with French in a car.

“Why don’t you talk about the part where when we was in the truck you was letting French Montana touch all up on your s***ch,” Milana said in an Instagram video. “A whole married woman.” (Nene married Gregg Leakes in 2013 for a second time.)

Milana also said that Leakes had asked for her help fixing her relationship with Williams, by asking Milana to convince Williams to go to dinner with them both. Milana didn’t say when the French incident allegedly occurred, but Page Six reported in August 2019 that Leakes and Williams had ended their feud — and celebrated by partying at strip club FlashDancers with French.

Meanwhile, Leakes laughed off Milana’s claim, posting a picture of her searching through a purse saying, “Looking for this damn [lady part] that French done SNATCHEDDDDDD.”

A rep for Leakes declined to comment.

#HipHopNews: Consequence Reveals He Has Lupus And Diabetes!

Consequence has shared some surprising news regarding his health. On Monday (Sept. 28), as reported by HipHopDX, during the Queens, N.Y. rhymer's recent Zoom listening party for his upcoming EP, Things Are Different Now, Consequence revealed that he has been diagnosed with lupus, a long-term chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease that causes pain in any part of the body.

"Around October 2019, I was overseeing the mixes for Kanye’s Jesus Is King album and we stayed up wild late,” Cons explained. “We was doing these listening sessions where we go to Detroit, Jamaica, taking wild flights. On the last flight, I got back to New York and then I shot a video for 'Complex Con.' Somewhere between the flight and Caiden had actually jumped on my back, I had developed a crink in my neck, which I thought would go away in a finger snap."

The G.O.O.D. Music artist said he thought the pain was going to subside, but once it didn't, he decided to visit his physician. He was given muscle relaxers, which worsened the issue. "I was already Type II diabetic with no diabetes symptoms,” he said. “I was subject to anything autoimmune-related. I went to Paris—I don’t want this to sound like rich nigga problems because I almost died—but I’m flying from one jet from Los Angeles to Paris and Paris to Los Angeles, and I get to L.A. and I can’t fucking move. So I go to urgent care—and this is when COVID was first shaking—so I was was like, ‘Fuck, maybe I got COVID.'"

Consequence went on to reveal that after traveling back to New York, he stayed indoors for about three weeks. This was around the time when the coronavirus quarantine was in full effect. He also thanked Kim Kardashian, who helped set him up at an urgent care facility in uptown Manhattan after speaking with Kanye West.

The rapper said he was given a swab test and that's when doctors determined his condition. "All my cells were on fire and that’s why I couldn’t move and shit,” he shared. "I was fucked up, never in my life fucked up like this. But God’s will is God’s will. Eventually, it was discovered what it was. Literally, I’m so fucking crazy I flew to Wyoming at 107 pounds"

He goes on to share that lupus impacted his diabetes, making him go from a Type II diabetic to Type I because he was required to take a steroid that affected his sugar level.

Consequence, who says he lost his voice for a couple of months and could only speak using a raspy tone, compared his illness to J Dilla—who also had lupus and died in 2006—and A Tribe Called Quest's Phife Dawg—who passed away back in 2016 following complications from diabetes.

"I have what Dilla had and what Phife had as a combo Happy Meal," he remarked jokingly. "To be honest with you, I’m learning every day. I didn’t even know I would get my way back. I didn’t know I would get my strength back at all. So I’m definitely in a space where I’m taking everything literally a step at a time, a day at a time. I don’t know where their situations went wrong. I’m assuming a lot of it is diet ’cause I know with me, I’ve to reformulate how I eat about four times in the last two months. I’m fine ’cause I went through the adjustment period, but when I was first going through everything, it was like coming at me 100 miles per hour. I’m not going to lie, it was very, very difficult. It still is difficult."

The veteran rapper also confirmed his lupus diagnosis via an Instagram post today (Sept. 29). "It’s Time For Me To Tell My Story It’s Time For Me To Come Back To Music Lupus + Diabetes definitely don’t have the same Bop as the 'TRAVIS SCOTT' Meal But I had to Eat It Allah has Blessed Me with more time God’s will is God’s will," he wrote.

Consequence is still in the studio and laying tracks despite the news of his diagnosis. His forthcoming EP, Things Are Different Now, drops on Oct. 23.

#SADNESS! John Legend’s Wife Chrissy Teigen Suffers Miscarriage After Recent Hospitalization!

Chrissy Teigen shared Wednesday evening that she has suffered a miscarriage following a recent hospitalization.

The cookbook author and wife of John Legend shared a solemn black-and-white photo of herself crying in a hospital bed on social media, along with the following message: "We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we've never felt before. We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn't enough.

"We never decide on our babies' names until the last possible moment after they're born, just before we leave the hospital," she continued. "But we, for some reason, had started to call this little guy in my belly Jack. So he will always be Jack to us. Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever. To our Jack - I'm so sorry that the first few moments of your life were met with so many complications, that we couldn't give you the home you needed to survive. We will always love you."

Teigen added, "We are so grateful for the life we have, for our wonderful babies Luna and Miles, for all the amazing things we've been able to experience. But everyday can't be full of sunshine. On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it."

Teigen and Legend have two children, Luna and Miles, who they conceived through IVF treatments. The couple announced they were expecting a third child in Legend's music video for the song "Wild."

In a later tweet on Wednesday evening by Teigen, she wrote, "Driving home from the hospital with no baby. How can this be real."

In early September, Teigen revealed she was being put on bed rest by her doctor for a couple of weeks. That stay was extended when the Cravings author became hospitalized for "excessive bleeding"," as she shared on Sept. 28.

"I guess in the simplest of terms, we can say my placenta is really, really weak," Teigen shared on her social media. "I feel really good. The baby is so healthy, growing stronger than Luna or Miles. He moves a lot. He moves so much earlier than they ever did.

"He's strong. I'm so excited for him because he's so wonderful, the strongest little dude," she continued. "So, I can't wait for him."

Shelter Island Resident Sues Town For Allowing Beyoncé To Film At Historical Site!

A furious Shelter Island resident has launched legal action against the town council for allegedly allowing Beyoncé to secretly shoot a video at a local historical site — which he called “sacred ground.”

Mike Gaynor claims in court papers seen neither Beyoncé nor Disney applied for permission to film her visual album “Black Is King” at Sylvester Manor, the former home of slave trader Nathaniel Sylvester.

Gaynor calls Sylvester “top a-hole and CEO of a worldwide slave-hunting and trading operation” — but says the site demands respect because slaves were buried there.

Gaynor, who lives in a neighboring property, filed suit in New York Supreme Court last Wednesday against the town, all of the town trustees and the Community Preservation Fund board’s member.

He donated $30,000 last year alone to the Manor.

“I have official confirmation from the town clerk that no permits were obtained, “I was deeply offended when I learned that The Manor took money from Disney to allow the film … on what is without argument on wholly sacred ground.”

He added, “Please know that there are at least 200+ enslaved Africans and Manhasset Indians buried on their land and so that’s just not a place where you film a dance-off.”

Gaynor believes that the council knowingly allowed the superstar to film without permits. “There’s no way they would have allowed her to turn up without knowing — I believe in fact the town did know about this and the town was signed up on an NDA so that the Manor and the town could make money,” he said.

Manor staff confirmed in August that they hosted the superstar and helped choose locations for her — insisting that she chose the site because of its important history.

A source told us that Disney bought the completed movie from an independent production company, and didn’t have a hand in the filming locations.

Reps for Beyoncé and the Shelter Island Town Council were unavailable for comment.

Netflix Reveals First Look at Chadwick Boseman in His Final Movie 'Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom'!

The final movie starring Chadwick Boseman, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, released its first look as Netflix dropped a clip on Wednesday. With the release also came the premiere date as the streaming service has designated Dec. 18 as the debut of Boseman's final film. The movie also stars Viola Davis, who plays the title character, Glenn Turman, Coleman Domingo and Michael Potts. George C. Wolfe serves as the director.

The movie tells the story of Chicago musicians led by Ma Rainey in what becomes a battle against her white manager and producers. Boseman's character, Levee, shares some insightful stories that propel the film. Timely considering all that is going on in the country, the movie tackles race issues and what life was like for black musicians in the 1920s.

Anticipation for the Netflix movie has increased rapidly since the tragic passing of Boseman on Aug. 28. The director of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom shared a tribute via The Hollywood Reporter after his death, saying it was an honor to get to work with him. "Chadwick, no words to express my devastation of losing you," Wolfe went on to say. "Your talent, your spirit, your heart, your authenticity." His co-star in the film, Davis, wrote on Twitter, 'Rest well prince… May flights of angels sing thee to thy heavenly rest." She also went on recently to speak very highly of him to the New York Times in their time working together on their latest project, "An actor of Chadwick's status usually comes on and it's their ego who comes on before them … That was absolutely, 150 percent off the table with Chadwick."

We Now Know Why Tyra Banks Replaced Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews on 'DWTS'!

Tyra Banks replaced former Dancing With the Stars hosts, Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews, this season.

ABC exec Andrew Llinares says it because the company wanted the show to evolve.

If you like watching ABC's Dancing With the Stars, you'll notice this year, things looked a *little* different in the ballroom—Len Goodman didn't come back as a judge due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, and dance pros Lindsay Arnold and Witney Carson took a break because they're pregnant with babies! We also got Tyra Banks as a brand new host (love her) instead of Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews—which caused a bunch of viewers to be upset—but it seems like there was no negative reason why they asked Tom and Erin to leave.

While speaking on during ABC’s VirtuFall panel, DWTS executive producer Andrew Llinares explained that they chose to replace Tom and Erin simply because they wanted to get a new hosting.

“I think it’s all about evolution. I think any show like this that has been on many, many seasons needs to continue to evolve,” he said. “I think changing the host was all about evolution, it was about making the show feel fresh, making it feel new [and] kind of make it reach out — maybe to a new audience as well, as well as the audience that’s been there for years.”

Andrew also explained that bringing in Tyra was basically a power move for the show. According to him, having one host (instead of two) has been really beneficial to the switching up the show's pacing. It also seems like higher ups at ABC are digging Tyra too, because he gushed about how great of a job she's doing.

“I think it’s working brilliantly with the one host. I think it’s really refreshed the pace of the show, actually,” he shared. “I think it’s taken it to a new pace, in terms of moving faster and just feeling different. I think there’s a real danger when a show’s been on for a long time that the audience almost gets bored of the rhythm. It doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with it. It just sort of gets a little boring — the rhythm of it. So, I think it’s changed the rhythm of the show in a really exciting way.”

He continued, and said that “Tyra is doing an amazing, amazing job. It’s just so wonderful to have her energy in the ballroom and her expertise as a host in the ballroom. I think I think she’s brought a new life to everything. It’s really exciting.”

Can't wait to tune in again on Monday night!
