Actor John Boyega criticized Disney in a new interview, saying Black and other nonwhite characters were "pushed to the side" in the Star Wars franchise.
“They gave all the nuance to Adam Driver, all the nuance to Daisy Ridley,” Boyega said of white co-stars in the recent sequel trilogy that began with "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." “Let’s be honest. Daisy knows this. Adam knows this. Everybody knows. I’m not exposing anything.”
In the the cover-story interview in the October issue of GQ UK, the 28-year-old British actor said his role of Finn, a stormtrooper who defects, was initially positioned as a main character only to be later “pushed to the side.”
“[W]hat I would say to Disney is do not bring out a Black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side. It’s not good,” Boyega said. “You knew what to do with these other people," but not "when it came to Kelly Marie Tran, when it came to John Boyega.
Attempts to reach Disney and Boyega for comment were not immediately successful.
Boyega tweeted on Wednesday in response to posts about his interview: “I said what I said. Love to you all seriously. Your support is amazing !”
In the GQ piece, Boyega, a British actor of Nigerian descent, also touched on an effort in 2015 to organize a boycott of "The Force Awakens," over a Black person's being cast as a central character.
The effort, which used the hashtag #BoycottStarWarsVII, accused the film of pushing a multicultural agenda and engaging in "white genocide," USA Today reported.
“I’m the only cast member who had their own unique experience of that franchise based on their race,” Boyega said. “Nobody else in the cast had people saying they were going to boycott the movie because [they were in it]. Nobody else had the uproar and death threats sent to their Instagram DMs and social media, saying, ‘Black this and Black that and you shouldn’t be a Stormtrooper.’ Nobody else had that experience. But yet people are surprised that I’m this way. That’s my frustration."
The boycott effort amounted to nothing when "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" premiered in December 2015 with one of the highest-grossing opening weekends of any film ever. It is now the highest grossing film with over $930 billion earned, according to IMDbPro.
In 2018, fellow "Star Wars" actor Kelly Marie Tran, who is of Asian descent, wiped her Instagram account after reportedly facing racist harassment after she appeared in the franchise.
Boyega's interview with GQ comes after wide publicity of his impromptu and emotional appearance at a protest against police brutality in London’s Hyde Park in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd
The actor told GQ that he mingled anonymously for hours during London’s protests in June, before agreeing to a request by organizers to address the crowd.
"Today is about innocent people who were halfway through their process," Boyega said in June. "We don't know what George Floyd could have achieved."
Later that day, the Star Wars Twitter account posted, "We stand with and support you, @JohnBoyega" and shared a link to Boyega's full speech.

So while there are currently some snags with the Atlanta show, Potomac seems to have hit its stride. So some are saying that Atlanta has lost its crown and Potomac is now the more entertaining show.
Interestingly enough, Robyn Dixon addressed this recently in an interview. RHOP isn’t lacking in drama.
When it comes to “Real Housewives of Potomac,” Robyn Dixon is thankful that the show is now five seasons in. She realizes that it’s become a fan favorite, and the current season is one she feels is one for the books. While a lot of drama does go down between Monique Samuels and Candiace Dillard, there are other feuds to keep an eye on. So far, even the newbie Wendy Osefo has had some heated moments with Ashley Darby.
Then of course, Gizelle Bryant and Karen Huger’s issues will only worsen later on in the season.
So the drama will just keep coming with the Potomac ladies. This could be one of the reasons why some of the “Real Housewives” fans feel as if RHOP may have surpassed “Real Housewives of Atlanta.” Meanwhile, others feel like it’s surely giving the Atlanta show a major challenge to the throne.

During a recent interview with People Magazine, Robyn was asked how she feels about some fans saying that RHOP is giving RHOA “a run for its money.”
And Robyn said, “First of all, Atlanta and Potomac are coexisting. Okay? We’re like the little sisters and we’re just trying to carry the torch. So we will never ever take their place. But we appreciate the comparisons. And we really, really appreciate that people are just loving us for us because we are two different shows completely and it feels really great you know, five seasons later that the fans are still loving Potomac for who we are.

6ix9ine is wavering in his loyalty to Nicki Minaj. Fresh off the release of his new album TattleTales, the rapper is stirring more controversy this time over his comments about his “TROLLZ” collaborator.
While speaking with Billboard, Tekashi was questioned for calling out other artists for using Drake to get a hit. But the interviewer pointed out that he had an assist from Nicki on “TROLLZ,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. However, 6ix9ine seemed to not want to give Nicki her proper credit.
“Nicki’s my sister. I love that girl to death,” he said before asking, “When has Nicki ever had a No. 1 till this date?”
The reporter informed him that “Say So,” Nicki’s collaboration with Doja Cat, hit No. 1 prior to “TROLLZ.”
Tekashi reiterated, “I love Nicki. That’s my sister. I love her to death,” but indicated that Nicki has never had a No. 1 single of her own on the Hot 100. “Give me a Nicki single that’s been No. 1. Her record,” he said before declaring that “TROLLZ” was his single.
“Let’s not shy off. That’s my record,” he added.
Nicki remains one of the few artists to support 6ix9ine before and after his high-profile racketeering case. Despite the backlash she received on social media, she has unwavered in her loyalty. “When I know somebody there’s nothing you can tell me about him,” she said during an episode of Queen Radio. “That’s just how it is.”
She also defended him after he snitched on his former gang and broke what many rappers consider a street code. “Me and 6ix9ine is not on the block. Just before the record-setting Verzuz battle between Monica and Brandy went down this past week, Brandy explained that she cleared the air between the 90s divas.
Brandy, 41, told “Ebro in the Morning” show on HOT97 that she had a heart-to-heart talk to finally thaw the icy relations between the two.
“I loved hearing her music. I loved hearing my music. It didn’t feel like a battle or somebody should win. It just felt like we were celebrating,” Brandy said about Monica, 39.
“In this one phase of my life, I just felt like I had this voice, and I needed to use my voice, I needed to start clapping back, I needed to start saying what’s on my mind and I never should have done that. With anywhere between 65% and 70% of movie theaters now open in North America, Warner Bros. debuted the highly-anticipated Tenet to rather underwhelming results.
Tenet, the latest from writer-director Christopher Nolan, debuted with $20.2 million at the domestic box office, according to Variety.
The thriller opened in several international markets before its domestic debut, as it nears $150 million worldwide.

Tenet was initially slated to open in theaters back in July, but it was pushed into August and then this weekend over the Labor Day holiday.
The film, which stars John David Washington and Robert Pattinson, earned $20.2 million from 2,810 theaters, earning a solid $7,188 per-screen average.
However, since several major theatrical markets are still closed, such as New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, that likely cost the film untold millions from its opening weekend gross.
Tenet was the first major studio blockbuster to open nationwide, after theaters across the country were shuttered in mid-March due to COVID-19.
While on the surface the debut seems like a solid one for Warner Bros., those numbers also include an entire week of sneak peek screenings in several theaters across the country.
Box office analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Re called Tenet's debut a 'fair opening' since there are still a 'significant number of key U.S. states and cities still closed.'
While several cities like Los Angeles have been relying on drive-in theaters to release films in a social-distancing environment, Warner Bros. issued strict guidelines that Tenet can only play in drive-in theaters in markets where indoor theaters are open.
Looking ahead to next weekend, the only film opening in wide release is Sony's The Broken Heart's Gallery, in theaters September 11, with others like Rent-A-Pal and Find Your Voice opening in limited release.
Chadwick Boseman's Wife, Costars Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o & More Attend Private Memorial!
Chadwick Boseman’s loved ones gathered together to pay their respects to the late actor.
A private memorial was held for the Black Panther star in Malibu, California, according to photographs obtained by The Sun. In addition to the late actor’s wife Taylor Simone Ledward, the memorial was also attended by a number of Boseman’s friends and costars, including Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke.
Photographs show that the service included music from a hang drum, as well as an image of the late actor alongside a floral display.
The memorial was held a week after Boseman died on Aug. 28 following a private years-long battle with colon cancer.
Three days after news of Boseman’s death, Jordan reflected on how much he learned from his “big brother” over the many years they knew each other.
"One of the last times we spoke, you said we were forever linked, and now the truth of that means more to me than ever," Jordan, 33, wrote in a touching tribute. "Since nearly the beginning of my career, starting with All My Children when I was 16 years old you paved the way for me. You showed me how to be better, honor purpose, and create legacy. And whether you’ve known it or not…I’ve been watching, learning and constantly motivated by your greatness."
"You cared about me. You are my big brother, but I never fully got a chance to tell you, or to truly give you your flowers while you were here. I wish we had more time,” he added. “I’m dedicating the rest of my days to live the way you did. With grace, courage, and no regrets. ‘Is this your king!?’Yes . he . is! Rest In Power Brother."
Boseman’s and Jordan’s paths first crossed when the two actors played the same role in All My Children. Boseman, who was 26 at the time, was allegedly fired from the part after speaking to producers about his concerns that the character, a teen gang member, represented a negative racial stereotype.
In a joint interview with Jordan for the January issue of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine, Boseman claimed that while the producers did take “some” of his suggestions, they also replaced him with Jordan, who portrayed the character for nearly three years.
“I’m younger than Chad, and I was coming into All My Children fresh off The Wire — wide open, still learning. I was playing this role not knowing that a lot of the things I was going through were because of what he’d already done for me," Jordan said in the 2019 interview.
Boseman died of colon cancer four years after his first diagnosis in 2016.
"It is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman," his family wrote in a statement. "A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much.”
"He died in his home, with his wife and family by his side," the statement continued. "The family thanks you for your love and prayers, and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time."

Ahmaud Arbery’s Mother Says 2:23 Foundation Using Son’s Name Without Consent!
Wanda Cooper-Jones publicly criticized people using her Arbery’s name for non-profits and trademarks.
Ahmaud Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, said she has not endorsed an organization called the 2:23 Foundation. The foundation started a, “I Run With Maud” Labor Day campaign.
Cooper-Jones said she feels disrespected because her late son’s name is being used without her approval.
“This foundation did not have my blessings,” Cooper-Jones said, according to Newsweek .
However, the 2:23 Foundation founders told WSB-TV, an ABC-affiliated television station licensed to Atlanta, Georgia, that “[Cooper-Jones] said it was fine.”
In response to the founders, Cooper-Jones publicly criticized people using her son’s name for non-profits and trademarks, saying she felt people were exploiting her situation.
“The ideas for the foundation likely started after national attention began to spread due to our advocacy efforts,” Cooper-Jones wrote, according to Newsweek. “Within seven days of the foundation’s launch, its organizers had already planned a large fundraiser.”
“The I RUN FOR MAUD committee (all five members who I do not know well),” she continued, “have known for months I did not want my child’s death to be exploited or used for monetary gain for anyone. I was disrespected and ignored.”
Newsweek reached out to the foundation’s head of PR and communications. They pointed the publication to a Facebook post made by the foundation.
“We have attempted countless times to reach out to [Cooper-Jones] and counsel to discuss this privately,” the post said.
“Our intention from the beginning was simple: Pursue justice for Ahmaud. Our team has not benefited financially from any of the work we have done to do just that. In fact, we have spent our own money to help pursue justice. And we have gotten the support from Maud’s family in the process.”

Elba's birthday celebration comes after a trying couple of months when the former PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive and his wife were both diagnosed with coronavirus in March. The actor revealed the news in a video he shared to Twitter, saying he "didn't have any symptoms" at the time.
"I got tested because I had realized I got exposed to someone who had also tested positive. I found out last Friday that they were tested positive, I quarantined myself and got a test immediately and got results back today," he said in the video.
That same month, the couple told Oprah Winfrey during her Oprah Talks COVID-19 series that Dhowre Elba made the decision to quarantine with her husband despite knowing she'd also contract the virus. Dhowre Elba also did not show any symptoms after testing positive.
“As soon as I heard that Idris was potentially exposed, I mean, I was on my way anyway, I wanted to be with him,” she said. “I think that’s an instinct as a wife. You just want to go and take care.”
Last month, Dhowre Elba told Grazia UK that their combined COVID-19 diagnoses left them terrified. "At the time that we got sick, the media was pushing hard on how dangerous it was," she recalled.
"At one point, Idris really thought that this could be the end," Dhowre Elba said. "He has asthma. He is older. It was really scary."
While they both recovered, the experience left them looking at their lives through new perspectives. "That kind of unsureness about what's coming next leaves you with a bit of anxiety," she said. "But having been sick and being okay also now gives you this new lease on life."
Dhowre Elba added, "I want to be super appreciative of everything.

“They were smiling at each other and very flirty the entire day. They seemed comfortable together,” the source added.
After their outing at the beach, Sofia, Jaden, and their friends continued their day of fun by grabbing dinner at Nobu.
“They stayed for several hours and left together in a Sprinter van. Sofia was in a great mood and never stopped smiling,” the source shared. “She seems to be having a lot of fun and is very happy. She and Jaden went back to a friend’s house for the night.”

Illinois Woman Allegedly Ran Over Boyfriend With SUV, Says He Was “Challenging” Her To Do It!
Illinois police arrested a 48-year-old woman for attempted murder after she intentionally ran over her boyfriend, who later died, People reports.
Court records obtained by the Chicago Tribune and Times of Northwest Indiana reported that Raquel McCormick ran over her boyfriend, Thomas Brankin, during a heated argument on August 11, Brankin died from his injuries.
McCormick left the scene but then returned, and that is when she called 911.
Authorities asked McCormick if Brankin, 53, said anything when she came back to the scene, she replied, “He was just moaning…and I’m like: ‘Seriously, this is the way you wanna end this?”
A witness of the incident told police that McCormick told Brankin to get up off the ground and that he wasn’t really hurt.
Responding officers arrived on scene to find Brankin unresponsive on the ground behind McCormick’s business, Raquel’s Wine House.
He died at the Franciscan Health Dyer Hospital on Tuesday after succumbing to his injuries, which included injuries to his eye sockets, facial fractures, swelling, and bleeding of the brain as well as swelling to the brainstem.
McCormick faces attempted murder charges and has been formally charged Thursday with aggravated battery and domestic battery by means of a deadly weapon. It is possible that she can be charged with murder, according to both papers, dependent on the outcome of an autopsy on Brankin’s body.
McCormick told authorities she and Brankin had been dating for three years and had spent the earlier part of the day drinking and shopping before they returned to her business to check on it.
Apparently, an argument between the two ensued, McCormick says she tried to leave, and that is when Brankin stepped in front of her vehicle. She allegedly told police Brankin was “challenging” her by asking if she was going to hit him.
The witness at the scene says that McCormick’s SUV made a sharp turn towards Brankin, who hit the hood of the car with his hands. Allegedly, she backed up, stopped briefly, and then accelerated with speed, that is when the witness heard a “crash/thud noise,” the record states.
The witness told officers, McCormick fled the scene, but came back a short time later and began telling Brankin to “get up and that he wasn’t really hurt,” according to the records.
Brankin coached several sports at local high schools and spent the past two seasons as a volunteer assistant golf coach at Valparaiso University, where he earned his degree and was named academic all-conference, The Tribune reported.
McCormick is being held without bail and has not entered a plea to the charges she faces. It was unclear if she has an attorney.

It’d be absurd…it is because you are pandering. Joe’s team looks at Cardi’s Instagram, sees millions of followers, and thinks, ‘okay, this is an illiterate person and if I appeal to her who says okurr in the middle of the interview…Black people will vote for me.’ [Which is] Basically saying, ‘Black people are stupid, you are dumb. And you are so foolish.’’
She went on to say that Joe must have been told by others who ‘handle’ him that black people like Cardi which is why he should talk to her.
In response, Cardi B tweeted: ‘Yes you are right I have the number 1 song and I’ve a huge platform and can make millions go vote to get the MAN THAT USED YOU. I do not want to argue with you I really don’t have the time. I honestly feel sorry for you.’
Cardi then wrote that Trump supporters had harassed her sister, Hennessy Carolina and her friend but Candance mocked her in another tweet, saying: ‘To clarify — Joe Biden ‘gotta talk’ to you because you have the number one song and Santa Claus was harassing your sister?’
