DEVELOPING NOW: 17-year-old Kyle Rittemhouse arrested in killing of 2 people in Kenosha!
KENOSHA, Wis. — lllinois police have arrested a 17-year-old after two people were shot to death and another was injured during another night of Black Lives Matter protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Kyle Rittenhouse, of Antioch, Illinois, was taken into custody Wednesday in Illinois on suspicion of first-degree intentional homicide. Antioch is about 15 miles from Kenosha.
Two of the victims shot Tuesday night, a 26-year-old Silver Lake resident and a 36-year-old Kenosha resident, died following the shooting. A 26-year-old West Allis resident suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting.
Videos circulating on social media show a young white man opening fire in the middle of the street with a semi-automatic rifle.
“I don’t need more guns on the street in the community when we are trying to make sure that we keep people safe. Law enforcement is trained. They are the ones who are responsible. They are the ones we have faith that they’ll do their jobs to make sure it gets done,” Kenosha Mayor John Antaramian said. “It would be beneficial and helpful for everyone to realize that.”
Wednesday afternoon, Kenosha Sheriff David Beth, police Chief Dan Miskinis, Kenosha County Executive Jim Kreuser and Mayor Antaramian gathered for a press conference to discuss the ongoing civil unrest and the shooting that happened Tuesday night.
Police said their investigation is ongoing, but police are working to have Rittenhouse transferred to Wisconsin so he can face criminal charges. According to Lake County, Illinois, court records, Rittenhouse has an extradition hearing scheduled for Friday.
“What I can’t tell you is what led to the disturbance that led to the use of deadly force by this person, and if both deaths are related to the same person,” Miskinis said. “I don’t know that at this point.”
The shooting was met with condemnation from political and community leaders alike.
Gov. Tony Evers said in a statement that he is grateful law enforcement officials have already made an arrest in connection to the killings.
“A senseless tragedy like this cannot happen again. I again ask those who choose to exercise their First Amendment rights please do so peacefully and safely, as so many did last night,” Evers said. “I also ask the individuals who are not there to exercise those rights to please stay home and let local first responders, law enforcement, and members of the Wisconsin National Guard do their jobs.”
Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul called for unity following the shooting, saying that anyone involved in violence and destruction is causing division in the community.
“Kenosha residents deserve the opportunity to grieve, come together, peacefully protest, call for change, and heal. The heavily armed vigilantes, arsonists, and other opportunists who have come to Kenosha to attempt to spur chaos have interfered with that and caused drastic harm to people,” Kaul said. “If those engaging in violence and destruction of property believe they are furthering some broader goal, they are wrong. They should leave Kenosha.”
Freedom Inc. a non-profit group based in Madison condemned the shooting in a statement shared Wednesday afternoon and called Rittenhouse a white supremacist.
“These shootings, as well as the presence of white supremacist militias at uprisings for Black lives across the country, are designed to suppress Black people who are rightfully fighting back against generations of murder and exploitation by the state,” the statement reads.
#RHOA: Cynthia Bailey Shares What It’s Been Like Filming ‘RHOA’ With New Castmates Drew Sidora, LaToya Ali!
Welcoming the newest peaches! In a recent interview The Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Cynthia Bailey revealed that everything is “so far so good” with the newcomers who’ve joined the show’s upcoming 13th season.
“So far, I’m liking the fresh meat,” the Bravolebrity, said while promoting Seagram’s Escapes Peach Bellini flavor. “But it’s still early in the game. So we’ll see, we’ll see. It’s always interesting what happens by the time we get to the end. So I think it’s good that we brought some other ladies in. I’ll always love the ladies that are here.”
It was confirmed in July that actress Drew Sidora was joining RHOA as a full-time cast member. Additionally, Canadian YouTuber LaToya Ali — a.k.a. LaToya Forever — will also be featured on season 13. Bailey said she “did not” know Ali, 33, prior to filming, but she briefly met Sidora, 35, a while ago. However, she believes that both newcomers “bring different things” to the table.
“I don’t really know what the age difference is, but LaToya seems to be a little younger. So she’s a little firecracker,” Bailey explained. “She’s one of those people that says any and everything, but she’s a lot of fun. She can probably be in trouble at the reunion because she says everything. She [is] gonna have some explaining. But I love her spirit. I love her energy.”
Bailey then shared what she “loves” about Sidora, adding, “She’s in a marriage, she has kids. She’s been in the industry a long time as an actress. She’s actually done a lot of work with my baby’s daddy, Leon [Robinson]. Like, she’s played his love interest quite a few times.”
The Sharknado actress, in fact, pointed out how “fun” it has been shooting with the entire RHOA cast. “The one thing about being in a pandemic, even if you have drama with some of the other ladies, you actually still miss them now because you just miss anybody,” she explained. “You just miss people. [You’re] just not really around people that much except, you know, your family. So, I’ve enjoyed catching up with the ladies.”
Aside from RHOA’s 13th season, Bailey is also focusing on her partnership with Seagram’s Escapes.
“Seagram’s Escapes has a lot of other different flavors for this product as well, [but] the Peach Bellini is my favorite because I actually helped make this one,” she explained. “So, you know, being a Georgia peach and everything and Housewife, Peach Bellini is definitely my favorite.”
The Real Housewives of Atlanta’s return date is yet to be announced.
#MusicNews: Aaliyah’s Estate In Talks To Bring Her Music To Streaming Services!
Aaliyah’s music may finally be coming to streaming services. On the 19th anniversary of her death on Tuesday, the late singer’s official Twitter account made a surprise announcement that fans have been anticipating for years. The Estate of Aaliyah Haughton is in discussions with record labels about finally making her catalog available to stream.
“We are excited to announce that communication has commenced between the estate and various record labels about the status of Aaliyah’s music catalogue, as well as its availability on streaming platforms in the near future,” read the message.
While there’s no timeline, this is a hopeful sign that Aaliyah’s catalog will finally be available digitally. “Thank you for your continued love and support. More updates to come!” added the estate.
In November 2019, a Twitter account claiming to be the late singer’s uncle Barry Hankerson announced that her full discography would be available on major streaming services on Aaliyah’s birthday: Jan. 16, 2020. But the date came and went.
It’s been a long time coming. Aaliyah’s debut, 1994’s Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number, is currently her only album available for streaming. Her other two albums–1996’s One in a Million and her third and final studio album, 2001’s Aaliyah–are not available on any digital platforms.
Hankerson is reportedly the reason why Aaliyah’s discography has not been previously available digitally. He owns the rights to her catalog with the exception of her debut, which was produced by R. Kelly. Hankerson sold a stake in Blackground’s publishing rights to Reservoir in 2012.

‘The Color Purple’ Feature Musical is coming to the BIG SCREEN and ‘Black Is King’s Blitz Bazawule Set To Direct!
Hot off of co-directing Beyoncé’s Disney+ visual album feature Black Is King, Ghana-born filmmaker Blitz Bazawule is set to direct Warner Bros. musical film The Color Purple, based on the Tony-winning Broadway musical.
I hear that the feature’s producers Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones caught Bazawule’s movie The Burial Of Kojo on Netflix, and were wowed by his vibrant visual style.
“We, were all blown away by Blitz’s unique vision as a director and look forward to seeing how he brings the next evolution of this beloved story to life,” Winfrey tells Deadline.
Bazawule is a composer and musician of four studio albums: Stereotype (2009), Native Sun (2011), Afropolitan Dreams (2014) and Diasporadical (2016), and his musical sensibility, and what he could bring to The Color Purple, also impressed the producers as well. Bazawule co-directed Black Is King with Beyoncé and Emmanuel Adjei, helming the South African shoot. Following his zoom call pitch with the producers, I hear Warners moved fast to sign Bazawule.
Marcus Gardley is writing the screenplay based on The Color Purple Broadway reimagining of Alice Walker’s 1982 novel. The story depicts the lives of African American families and relationships in early twentieth-century Georgia. The musical, featuring jazz, ragtime, gospel, blues and African rhythms, has a book by Marsha Norman with music by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray.
EPs are Walker, Rebecca Walker, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Carla Gardini and Mara Jacobs.
The original Broadway musical debuted in 2005, scoring 11 Tony Award nominations in 2006 and winning for LaChanze’s role as Celie. It ran for 910 performances. A revival in 2015 scored four more Tony noms and won for Best Revival of a Musical and for Cynthia Erivo in her Broadway debut. The musical has also won Grammy and Emmy awards.
Spielberg, directed and produced the 11-time Oscar-nominated 1985 film, which Jones also produced. Winfrey, made her feature debut in the original movie and earned a Supporting Actress Oscar nom. Winfrey, Jones and Sanders also produced the Broadway musical.
Bazawule’s The Burial Of Kojo premiered at Urbanworld Film Festival where it won Best Narrative Feature (World Cinema). It also won the Grand Prize at the 2019 Luxor African Film Festival in Egypt. Bazawule is the founder of Africa Film Society, an organization focused on the preservation and distribution of classic African cinema. He is a Senior TED Fellow and recipient of the Vilcek Prize.
3 Shot, 2 Fatally, During Unrest Sparked By Wisconsin Police Shooting Of Black Man!
Two people died and one person was injured as shots were fired late Tuesday in Kenosha during the third night of unrest in Wisconsin following the shooting of a Black man by police, Kenosha police said.
The shooting was reported at about 11:45 p.m. in an area where protests have taken place, Kenosha police Lt. Joseph Nosalik said in a news release. The injured person was in serious condition at a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, he said.
The shooting was under investigation and no other information was released. The victims have not been identified.
Jacob Blake, who was shot multiple times by police in Wisconsin, is paralyzed, and it would “take a miracle” for him to walk again, his family’s attorney said Tuesday, while calling for the officer who opened fire to be arrested and others involved to lose their jobs.
The shooting of Blake on Sunday in Kenosha — apparently in the back while three of his children looked on — was captured on cellphone video and ignited new protests over racial injustice in several cities, coming just three months after the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police touched off a wider reckoning on race.
Earlier Tuesday, Blake’s father spoke alongside other family members and lawyers, telling reporters that police shot his son “seven times, seven times, like he didn’t matter.”
“But my son matters. He’s a human being and he matters,” said Blake’s father, who is also named Jacob Blake.
The 29-year-old was in surgery Tuesday, said attorney Ben Crump, adding that the bullets severed Blake’s spinal cord and shattered his vertebrae. Another attorney said there was also severe damage to organs.
“It’s going to take a miracle for Jacob Blake Jr. to ever walk again,” Crump said.
The legal team plans to file a civil lawsuit against the police department over the shooting. Police have said little about what happened, other than that they were responding to a domestic dispute. The officers involved have not been named. The Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating.
Police fired tear gas for a third night Tuesday to disperse protesters who had gathered outside Kenosha’s courthouse, where some shook a protective fence and threw water bottles and fireworks at officers lined up behind it. Police then used armored vehicles and officers with shields pushed back the crowd when protesters ignored warnings to leave a nearby park.
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers had called for calm Tuesday, while also declaring a state of emergency under which he doubled the National Guard deployment in Kenosha from 125 to 250. The night before crowds destroyed dozens of buildings and set more than 30 fires in the city’s downtown.
“We cannot allow the cycle of systemic racism and injustice to continue,” said Evers, who is facing mounting pressure from Republicans over his handling of the unrest. “We also cannot continue going down this path of damage and destruction.”
Blake’s mother, Julia Jackson, said the damage in Kenosha does not reflect what her family wants and that, if her son could see it, he would be “very unpleased.”
She said the first thing her son said to her when she saw him was he was sorry.
“He said, ‘I don’t want to be a burden on you guys,’” Jackson said. “‘I want to be with my children, and I don’t think I’ll walk again.’”
Three of the younger Blake’s sons — aged 3, 5 and 8 — were in the car at the time of the shooting, Crump said. It was the 8-year-old’s birthday, he added.
The man who said he made the cellphone video of the shooting, 22-year-old Raysean White, said he saw Blake scuffling with three officers and heard them yell, “Drop the knife! Drop the knife!” before the gunfire erupted. He said he didn’t see a knife in Blake’s hands.
In the footage, Blake walks from the sidewalk around the front of his SUV to his driver-side door as officers follow him with their guns drawn and shout at him. As Blake opens the door and leans into the SUV, an officer grabs his shirt from behind and opens fire. Seven shots can be heard, though it isn’t clear how many struck Blake or how many officers fired.
Blake’s father told the Chicago Sun-Times that his son had eight holes in his body.
Anger over the shooting has spilled into the streets of Kenosha and other cities, including Los Angeles, Wisconsin’s capital of Madison and in Minneapolis, the epicenter of the Black Lives Matter movement this summer following Floyd’s death.
Hundreds of people again defied curfew Tuesday in Kenosha, where destruction marred protests the previous night as fires were set and businesses vandalized. There were 34 fires associated with that unrest, with 30 businesses destroyed or damaged along with an unknown number of residences, Kenosha Fire Chief Charles Leipzig told the Kenosha News.
“Nobody deserves this,” said Pat Oertle, owner of Computer Adventure, surveying the damage on Tuesday. Computers were stolen, and the store was “destroyed,” she said.
“This accomplishes nothing,” Oertle said. “This is not justice that they’re looking for.”
U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson and U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil, both Republicans, called on the governor to do more to quell the unrest. Steil said he would request federal assistance if necessary.
Evers continued to call for protesters to be peaceful.
“Please do not allow the actions of a few distract us from the work we must do together to demand justice, equity, and accountability,” he said.
Blake’s family also called for calm.
“I really ask you and encourage everyone in Wisconsin and abroad to take a moment and examine your hearts,” Blake’s mother said. “Do Jacob justice on this level and examine your hearts. ... As I pray for my son’s healing physically, emotionally and spiritually, I also have been praying even before this for the healing of our country.”

Celebrity Hairstylist Chuck Amos Sets The Record Straight About Brandy's Braids!
Between the release of her new album b7, Moesha now streaming on Netflix much to our streaming delight and an upcoming Brandy and Monica Verzuz, Brandy has been on everyone’s lips lately. And we all know that when conversations about the singer come up, her former signature braids are mentioned just as much as her title as the queen of runs.
And celebrity hairstylist Chuck Amos is not here for the rumors. He started the week off with a little reverie of his own in an Instagram post – remembering all the fun and bizarre moments of shooting the video for “The Boy Is Mine.” He also set out to dispel any false claims about the singer’s iconic braids.
“I did @Brandy’s hair for her first 2 Albums 1994-1999!” he wrote in the caption of the post. “Now Let Me “Set The Record Straight”…Brandy NEVER HAD “Lace Front” Braids EVERRRR!! That is “A LIE” and a FALSE RUMOR!! I was there, FirstHand DOING her hair!”

But what’s more important is the fact that her hair was ever a controversial discussion at all. Black women’s appearance is constantly under scrutiny, and the policing of Black hair is directly in step with the policing of Black bodies.
If Brandy was wearing lace front braid wigs (which, if we’re being honest, anyone with the blessing of sight could see was not the case), that’s her prerogative.
But it’s refreshing to see the people who were there tell that story and put the facts on the record. Today, she continues to stun in braids, looking just as youthful and fresh-faced with the style as she did back in the nineties.
And in a recent episode of ESSENCE’s Yes, Girl! podcast, Brandy talked about how she no longer looks for outside validation, and how she discovered the importance of self-love.

'Kamala Harris: Children's Picture Book Rooted In Justice' Coming Aug. 25!
NEW YORK — That didn’t take long: Just weeks after making history as the running mate for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, Sen. Kamala Harris will be the subject of a new picture book.
Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing announced Wednesday that prize-winning author Nikki Grimes has written “Kamala Harris: Rooted in Justice,” which features illustrations by Laura Freeman. The book comes out Aug. 25.
"Discover the incredible story of a young daughter of immigrants who would grow up to defend the rights of people everywhere and be named the Democratic vice presidential candidate by Joe Biden in this moving picture book biography of Senator Kamala Harris," reads the book's description.
In June, Simon & Schuster published “Joey: The Story of Joe Biden,” a picture book written in part by the former vice president's wife, Jill Biden.
Harris, a California Democrat, is the first Black woman and first Asian American woman named to a major party presidential ticket. She accepted her nomination Wednesday evening at the Democratic National Convention.

Viacom Reportedly Considering Rekindling Business Relationship With Nick Cannon + ‘Wild N’ Out’!
Things were pretty WILD for Nick Cannon last month. Viacom announced they cut ties with Nick Cannon and he’d no longer be with the company after they felt he made anti-Semitic comments on his podcast, Cannon’s Class with his guest, Professor Richard Griffin. In the episode, Nick referred to black people as the “true Hebrews,” and talked about anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.
Days later Nick Cannon responded to being fired and talked about how he’s been with the company for over a decade and his show Wild N’ Out has been a huge success. “Based on trust and empty promises, my ownership was swindled away from me. For Viacom to be so deceptive is no surprise; they have been mistreating and robbing our community for years, underpaying talent on their biggest brands like Love & Hip Hop, all of BET programming, and of course, Wild ‘N Out.”
Then Nick issued an apology to Viacom, the Jewish community, and even sat with Rabbi Cooper to be “corrected” and to gain a better understanding.
“First and foremost I extend my deepest and most sincere apologies to my Jewish sisters and brothers for the hurtful and divisive words that came out of my mouth during my interview with Richard Griffin. They reinforced the worst stereotypes of a proud and magnificent people and I feel ashamed of the uninformed and naïve place that these words came from. The video of this interview has since been removed.”
In the latest update, Viacom is reportedly considering rekindling their business relationship with Nick Cannon. Bossip reports Chris McCarthy, the president of entertainment and youth brands at ViacomCBS, was pleased with the comedian’s efforts to make amends. Chris said he’s “hopeful” the company and Nick can find a way to rebuild their partnership but there isn’t an immediate plan to reconcile.

"There are allegations that there were phone conversations between the two parties, and that’s essentially the extent of the allegations," Puriefoy said. "When you take her own words, she says there was no affair, no physical contact, they never met each other, they never saw each other."

Wiz Khalifa Announces Delivery-Only Restaurant Chain 'Hotbox By Wiz'!
Wiz Khalifa wants you to be prepared with a batch of stoner-friendly munchies as quarantine continues.
On Monday (August 24), it was announced that the rapper has partnered with virtual restaurant brand curator Nextbite for a delivery-only chain called HotBox by Wiz. The service, which kicks off on October 1, will see customers order from a menu personally curated by the rapper.
While the full menu isn't available, Billboard obtained some of the initial offerings, including Blazed Ends, crispy, savory burnt brisket ends covered in a smoky-sweet BBQ sauce; Taylor Gang Turkey Burger, a turkey patty with lettuce, sliced tomato, onion, mayo and a side of Chip Hits, house-made chips tossed in parmesan and lemon; Mac & Yellow, a creamy bowl of mac and cheese with loads of cheese on top; and the Mile High Dark Chocolate Brownie, a delectable dessert.
Restaurants are expected in his hometown of Pittsburgh, as well as Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, Denver, Washington, D.C., Indianapolis, Houston, and New York City. Fans will be able to order from the likes of Uber Eats, DoorDash, Postmates and Grubhub. Local restaurants will also cook the food and act as fulfillment partners. If you don't see your city, Khalifa has set up a voting poll, where fans can submit their cities for added consideration on a monthly basis.
Hot 97's 'Ebro In The Morning' Issues Apology Following Paddy Duke Ousting!
Hot 97 is facing an onslaught of criticism after longtime executive and former on-air personality Paddy Duke (real name Pasquale Raucci) was fired by the New York City radio station for his involvement in the 1989 murder of Yusuf Hawkins.
News of Duke’s ousting arrived on Sunday (August 23), which just happened to be the 31st anniversary of the killing. Critics wondered how Duke was able to fly under the radar for so many years and questioned Hot 97’s employee vetting process.
On Monday (August 24), Ebro Darden, Peter Rosenberg and Laura Stylez addressed the situation on the Hot 97 show Ebro in The Morning, explaining they had no idea the documentary was being released and claimed they were shocked Duke was involved in such an abhorrent crime.
“Behind the scenes, corporate started to go to work to figure out who knew what, when Paddy was hired and what was going to be the response because this wasn’t just going to be allowed to fly,” Ebro said. “The realization is that this couldn’t be swept under the rug, obviously, so he’s been fired.”
Ebro did eventually admit he was aware of Duke’s connection to the case.
“He told me that he got swept up in the Yusef Hawkins situation,” he said. “He also told me he didn’t have nothing to do with it. This was — it had to have been more than eight, 10 years ago. I didn’t know that he had a misdemeanor ’cause he did get charged with a misdemeanor and I didn’t know that his record had been expunged.
“Based on what I know about the NYPD, neighborhoods getting swept up around a murder, that’s normal procedure, especially in the late 80s and 90s. If you was outside, if you were near the park, if you were anywhere around, you were getting swept up
He then offered an apology to Hot 97 listeners, adding, “On behalf of our team at Ebro In The Morning, we apologize that this is even happening. It was out of our control, but we apologize and we’re here now. We’ve inherited something that we have to, as a team, deal with the brunt of.”
Interest in the Hawkins tragedy was renewed after HBO Max aired a documentary about the incident called Yusuf Hawkins: Storm Over Brooklyn. Duke was part of a mob of White men who attacked the 16-year-old Hawkins and three other Black teens in Bensonhurst, a predominantly Italian-American section of Brooklyn. The mob mistakenly thought they were part of a different group of Black teens headed to a party at the home of a local girl they believed was dating a Black man.
During the scuffle, Hawkins was shot twice in the chest and later died at the hospital. Five members of the mob were arrested in connection with Hawkins’ murder, including Duke. He was ultimately found not guilty of manslaughter and second-degree murder but convicted on eight lesser counts. Consequently, he was sentenced to three years probation and a $200 fine.
Duke went on to have a flourishing career at Hot 97. From 1994 to 2003, he was an on-air DJ, and he also served as the producer of Angie Martinez’s show before being promoted to the commercial production director.
