Ava DuVernay for Town and Country June 2019
Ava DuVernay, is one of the four cover stars of Town & Country’s Summer 2019 issue.
Here’s some excerpts from the interview.
On what she wanted to convey in ‘When They See Us’: “Often when you hear ‘criminal,’ they’re dehumanized. What we try to do in the series is show that these are living, breathing people with thoughts, memories, feelings families.”
On the injustices the exonerated Central Park Five suffered that others don’t: “All of them were picked up off the street that day for just being boys – boys will be boys. Just like Brett Kavanaugh, just like all the white boys or the women reading this magazine who go on spring break and do all kinds of things and are never considered a wolfpack or a gang, never given the full brunt of the criminal justice system. The hope is that people can watch this story and consider the evils of that system. The film is designed to inspire conversation and change.”
On her emotional reaction at the conclusion of filming: “…When I got to the end of episode four, I cried like a baby. The cumulative emotion broke me down in a way that was unlike anything I’ve done.”
Alabama State Senate passes abortion ban law where if a woman is raped she must carry the child to term or face a FELONY!
The Alabama state Senate on Tuesday approved a bill essentially banning abortion in the state, a move specifically aimed at challenging more than 40 years of federal abortion protection under Roe v. Wade. The bill would make it a felony for a doctor to perform or attempt an abortion during any stage of pregnancy.
The House approved a version of the bill that had an exception for the mother's health, passing 74-3, then a Senate committee added an exception for rape and incest. Republicans in the Senate, however, suddenly tabled the rape and incest exemptions last week, leading to swift and vocal opposition from Democrats.
Shouting erupted as Democratic Sen. Bobby Singleton, other Democrats and at least one Republican objected to the motion being gaveled through without a roll call vote.
"You've got 27 men over on the other side ready to tell women what they can do with their bodies," Singleton said. "You don't have to procedurally just try to railroad us."
Israel, Saudi Arabia and Trump aides want confrontation with Iran. Will Trump listen?
The session was adjourned after Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh, a Republican, suggested the lawmakers take the weekend to cool down.
Singleton put up an amendment to make exceptions in the case of rape and incest again on Tuesday night. Four Republicans joined the seven Democrats present to vote for the exceptions, but the measure failed in a roll call vote. Singleton then accused proponents of the legislation of having "raped the state of Alabama with this bill."
"You don’t care anything about babies for real. You just kicked them in the stomach and you aborted them yourselves," Singleton said Tuesday. "You just aborted the state of Alabama with your rhetoric with this bill. You just aborted the state of Alabama and all of you should be put in jail for this abortion you just laid on Alabama.
During Tuesday's debate on the bill in the Senate, Democratic State Senator Vivian Figures introduced an amendment to require legislators who voted in favor of the ban to pay the legal fees in the inevitable court challenges, and then another to make vasectomies a felony.
Both of the amendments were rejected by roll call vote.
The bill easily passed the Senate 25-6. It now goes to Gov. Kay Ivey, a Republican, who has not indicated whether she will sign it. If she does, it would be the strictest abortion law in the country.
Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala., called the bill an "extreme attack" on women's freedoms in a video statement posted to his Twitter Monday.
"These are Republican legislators who are overwhelmingly men, are so extreme and so callous that they would support a bill that denies a woman a constitutional right that they’ve had for decades," Jones said. "They would take that right and make their doctors and healthcare providers criminals.”
With the new conservative majority on the Supreme Court, lawmakers across the country are pushing for tougher abortion laws to challenge the high court's 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling.
Alabama House Rep. Terri Collins, who sponsored the bill, told NBC News Tuesday evening that legislators wanted to keep the bill's text as clean as possible, specifically to address the language in Roe v. Wade, which talked about a baby being "in utero."
"This bill's purpose is to hopefully get to the Supreme Court and have them revisit the actual decision, which was is the baby in a womb, a person?" Collins said. "And we believe technology and science shows that it is. You can see that baby tissue develop all the way through now."
Georgia's Republican Gov. Brian Kemp recently signed legislation banning abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected.
"Heartbeat abortion" bans have also been signed into law in Mississippi, Kentucky, Ohio this year. Lawmakers in Tennessee, Missouri, South Carolina, Florida, Texas, Louisiana and West Virginia are considering similar proposals.

#RIP: Legendary Actor Tim Conway Dies at 85 After Long Bout With Dementia
Tim Conway, the legendary comedic actor who appeared on “The Carol Burnett Show,” passed away on Tuesday. He was 85.
Conway’s rep, Howard Bragman, tells media outlets Conway passed away this morning after a long illness. According to PEOPLE, which first reported the news, in lieu of flowers or gifts, the family is asking for any donations to be made to The Lou Ruvo Brain Center at the Cleveland Clinic in Las Vegas.
Conway’s daughter, Kelly, released a statement, saying:
It is with the greatest sorrow that my brothers Tim, Patrick, Jamie, Corey, Seann, and I announce that our Dad, Tim Conway has passed away.
The love he gave us, and the laughter he gave the world, will never be replaced but will be remembered forever. He is at peace now but I will miss him every second of every day until we meet again in heaven.
We knew he would have to leave us someday, but that day came too soon. “ SO LEAVE ME IF YOU NEED TOO, I WILL STILL REMEMBER, ANGEL FLYING TOO CLOSE TO THE GROUND”
I want to thank everyone for their prayers, love and support over the past year or so.
As first reported, the comedian was suffering from severe dementia and his daughter and wife fought for months over his health care. Conway’s daughter claimed he was “almost entirely unresponsive.”
An attorney appointed by the court to represent Conway said he was “unable to communicate” and “showed no ability or willingness to talk.”
Conway’s daughter was trying to be named conservator over her father but the court ultimately decided against her.
In addition to his work on “McHale’s Navy” and “The Carol Burnett Show,” Tim Conway is perhaps best known for his character Dorf. Rest In Peace and Thanks for the Laughs!
Tiger Woods Offers Condolences To The Family Suing Him In Wrongful Death Case
Tiger Woods said Tuesday that he feels bad for the family of a former employee at Woods' bar who is suing the golf star in a wrongful death lawsuit.
"We're all very sad that Nick passed away," Woods said ahead of this week's PGA Championship. "It was a terrible night, a terrible ending, and we feel bad for him and his entire family. It's very sad."
The family of Nicholas Immesberger, a bartender who died in a car crash last year, is suing Woods, his girlfriend and his restaurant company, saying they "fueled" his death by over-serving him alcohol and then sending him to his car to drive home.
Immesberger, 24, died December 10 near the community of Port Salerno when he crashed his Corvette after drinking at The Woods Jupiter restaurant and bar, the family said.
The wrongful death lawsuit targets Woods, who owns the restaurant where Immesberger worked, and Woods' girlfriend Erica Herman, who is listed in the complaint as the general manager of the business. The suit accuses them and the restaurant of serving him even though they knew he was an alcoholic, negligence that "caused or contributed to" his death.
Attorney Spencer Kuvin said that Florida law holds that when a business over-serves someone known to be addicted to alcohol, that business is responsible for what occurs.
"This is a tragedy because someone who had a problem was not taken care of, and instead, The Woods (restaurant), Tiger and Erica chose to fuel that addiction," Kuvin said. "They fueled his addiction with more alcohol instead of help."
The lawsuit comes just weeks after the 43-year-old golfer completed one of the greatest comebacks in sports history, winning The Masters after a lost decade of sex scandal, back injuries and drug addiction. President Donald Trump honored Woods with the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House last week.
Kuvin, the attorney, referenced Woods' history with addiction in announcing the lawsuit on Tuesday.
"Just like he ignored his own problem for years, he and his girlfriend chose to ignore this problem that their own employee had, and as a result, this tragedy ensued," he said.
The fatal crash
The lawsuit, brought by Immesberger's parents, said he finished his bartending shift at 3 p.m. and then sat at the bar drinking for several hours. He died in a single-car crash at about 6 p.m.
Immesberger was driving above the posted speed limit and was not wearing a seat belt during the fatal single-car crash, according to a report from The Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
The report says that the driver lost control of the vehicle, which then traveled across several lanes to the grass divider, ramped up a culvert, went airborne and then collided with a sign and a parked vehicle. Immesberger was partially ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead on the scene, the report states.
Alcohol use was not suspected at the time but a blood test was taken, the report notes.
The family's civil complaint says Immesberger had a blood alcohol level of .256, more than three times the legal limit. A police report says he was driving an estimated 70 mph in a 55 mph zone.
He wanted to be a firefighter
The suit alleges employees knew Immesberger attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and had another alcohol-related crash in November. The attorneys also said Woods and Herman knew of his alcoholism but were drinking with Immesberger a few nights before the fatal crash.
The suit alleges that the employees and management at the restaurant promoted drinking by employees, and Kuvin said Herman created a culture for the bar that led to his death.
Kuvin also said that he had evidence the bar destroyed surveillance video from the night of the fatal crash that showed Immesberger drinking at the bar after his shift.
The wrongful death suit is asking for an unspecified amount of damages.
Immesberger's mother, Mary Belowsky, said her son wanted to be a firefighter and had plans to to go to EMT school in January.
"Nicholas was a wonderful son and he wasn't finished here. He had plans," she said Tuesday.
She said that The Woods Jupiter had failed her son and called on all restaurants and bars to take the issue of over-serving employees more seriously.
"He referred to The Woods as his family and his friends," Belowsky said through tears. "And when he needed them, they kinda just looked the other way."
Severeal media outlets also reached out to Herman for comment but didn't get a reply.
Wendy Williams Says She Dates OFTEN but who was this Mystery Man She Was Spotted With?
Wendy Williams addressed her divorce from her husband Kevin Hunter head on for the first time. Since news broke that she was calling it quits with Kevin after she filed for divorce in April, Wendy sort of danced around details about her pending divorce. She hadn't fully addressed the situation, until now.
Over the weekend, pics and videos of Wendy and a mystery guy attending the Fierce Ball on Saturday night in NYC were floating around on social media. The man looked a lot like her "type," i.e. her soon-to-be ex. People questioned if she was out and about with Kevin. Turns out, she was with her security detail - a bodyguard named Web. After she confirmed who she was with, Wendy opened up about her divorce.
"I am working on my divorce pleasantly right now," she told the audience.
She said she can't really ask for privacy from the public because she's always in everyone else's business when ish hits the fan. Right now, her son, Kevin Jr., is home from college and he's splitting his time between her and her ex. If you've been keeping up with Wendy, then you know she has been hitting up events left and right in NYC recently. She said she's been out on the scene because she likes to have fun. And now that she's a "mature, almost single woman," she can do that.
With all her newfound freedom, Wendy has also been heavy on the dating scene. She went on to say that several of her male employees have been to her new "bachelorette pad" in NYC and the parade of men will continue until she's settled in.
"I have the ultimate bachelorette pad, high atop everything. I have a really, really good view and I am reclaiming my life. I don't have a boyfriend, but I must admit, I'm rediscovering my love of men. And transparency, I do date and I date pretty often."
“The parade of males will proceed as a result of I would like issues lifted, put in place,” she joked. “I’m nonetheless unpacking containers for God’s sakes. That’s all I’m saying.”

James Corden Responds to Troll Who Wished Cancer on His Son Over 'Game of Thrones' Spoiler
Dragons aren't "Game of Thrones" biggest menace — it's trolls.
James Corden had to deal with one on Monday night, after a Twitter user wished cancer upon his son for posting a "spoiler".
During his opening monologue, "The Late Late Show" host was riffing about escalating tensions between the US and China, and joked it may end up with Donald Trump "riding on the back of a dragon and torching the entire economy" — photoshopping a picture of the President atop Drogon as he burned King's Landing to the ground.
Despite the fact that the photo only flashed up for a second, and without context, it was enough to warrant a terminal illness for a child, according to one "fan".
"It's f--ked up you can’t even watch TV without a fat f--k spoiling something... Luckily I got to see it before this, but seriously I hope his kid gets cancer," the follower wrote.
Against common internet guidelines, Corden engaged with the troll.
"That is, without question, the single most upsetting thing I think you could ever say about me or my family," he responded. "Please take a minute and think about what you just wrote and whether you want to be a person who publicly says such things. I believe you’re better than that x"
The follower — who admitted in his original tweet that he'd already seen the episode and thus it wasn't even a spoiler — shot back: "It was a joke, you know like this segment was."
Corden then gently and decisively shut him down a second time: "Well I saw your hope for my son. My hope for yours is that they never get to read that their mother or father would wish cancer on any child as 'a joke'. Because however you defend it to them, they'll never be able to understand how you could do such a thing. Night x"
The Twitter user's account was suspended shortly afterward.
Corden is a father of three: eight-year-old son Max, and daughters Carey, four, and Charlotte, one.

Tiffany Haddish to host ‘Kids Say the Darndest Things’ revival for ABC
ABC is reviving “Kids Say the Darndest Things,” and comedian Tiffany Haddish is ready to host.
Haddish will also serve as executive producer on the series, which will feature her chatting and interacting with kids. Taped in front of a live studio audience, the show will feature both in-studio segments and bits taped all over the country.
ABC plans to launch the new “Kids Say the Darndest Things” this fall on Sundays at 8 p.m., sandwiched between two family-friendly reality staples: “America’s Funniest Home Videos” and “Shark Tank.”
“When I was dreaming of stars I wanted to bring to ABC, Tiffany Haddish was top of my list,” said ABC entertainment president Karey Burke, who announced the pickup on Tuesday morning. “Tiffany starring in and producing this iconic series is everything I hoped for.”
The previous incarnation of “Kids Say the Darndest Things” was hosted by Bill Cosby, and ran on CBS from 1998 to 2000. Given the charges of sexual assault against Cosby, it’s probably no surprise that his version wasn’t mentioned in the press release announcing the revival.
But Eric Schotz, who executive produced the Cosby version, is back to executive produce the new “Kids Say the Darndest Things” along side Haddish. Schotz was also the producer behind “Seriously Funny Kids,” a CBS reality show featuring Heidi Klum interacting with youngsters.
“Kids Say the Darndest Things” originated from a segment that Art Linkletter used to do on his radio show “House Party” starting in 1945. He moved the idea to his TV series “Art Linkletter’s House Party.”
CBS TV Studios, which owns the rights to the format, is producing with Anvil 1893 Entertainment and Haddish’s She Ready Prods.
“It’s a warm and funny family program that is sure to provide both tears and peals of laughter to viewers of all ages,” said David Stapf, president of CBS TV Studios.
Among the segments planned for the new “Kids Say the Darndest Things,” per ABC: “‘Kids Rule,’ in which kids explain to Tiffany the rules for everything from sportsmanship to dating; ‘Love Talk,’ where Tiffany seeks advice on her love life; ‘Best Carpool Ever,’ with Tiffany taking on carpool duty with a minivan full of kids; ‘Granny Tiff,’ when Tiffany, in prosthetics and dressed up as an older woman, receives technology advice from the kids; and more.”
“I’m excited to hear what kids have to say these days because I can’t understand what they are saying on social media,” Haddish said in a statement. “They’re using too many abbreviations!”
Haddish’s other current TV projects include starring opposite Tracy Morgan on TBS’ comedy series “The Last O.G.” and as the voice of “Tuca” on Netflix’s animated series “Tuca and Bertie.” She also has a one-hour stand-up comedy special set to debut on Netflix later this year.
The “Kids Say the Darndest Things” news comes on the heels of NBC’s announcement that it was relaunching its own underage showcase, “Little Big Shots,” with a new host who also comes with star power: Melissa McCarthy. Coincidentally, Haddish and McCarthy appear together in the upcoming drama feature “The Kitchen,” which will be released in August.

Ariana Grande Is The Latest Celebrity To Be Sued For Posting Photos Of Herself
For the last few months, several celebrities have been shaken down or sued over photos of themselves, and the latest celebrity to fall victim to the swindle is Pop superstar, Ariana Grande.
Joining the likes of Odell Beckham Jr, Khloe Kardashian, Gigi Hadid, Jennifer Lopez and more, Grande has been slapped with a lawsuit for posting pictures of herself without permission.
In docs obtained by TMZ, a photographer named Robert Barbera says Grande had no right to post her own photos without payment or permission. But since she did, sharing the images to her 154 million followers, he’s demanding to be reimbursed.
According to the publication, Barbera is demanding either the profits she earned from posting the photo or $25,000 for each image, whichever is more.
Should celebrities be sued for posting photos of themselves?
Daniel Craig injured on set of Bond film, production halted
The actor reportedly was flown from Jamaica, where the movie most recently has been shooting, to the United States for X-rays.
Did Daniel Craig injure an ankle while filming the new James Bond movie, necessitating a pause in production?
The British tabloid The Sun said Monday that Craig, 51, had slipped and fallen during a running scene for the as-yet-untitled movie, referred to by producers as "Bond 25." The British actor, in his fifth outing as cinematic superspy 007, reportedly was flown from Jamaica, where the movie most recently has been shooting, to the United States for X-rays.
Representatives for Craig, for production company Eon Productions and for distributor MGM did not respond to requests for comment.
Tabloid reports of Craig's injuries while shooting Bond films, on which he does some of his own stunts, have been mixed in their accuracy.
The actor refuted claims that he had lost two teeth bloodily during a fight scene for "Casino Royale" (2006), telling the U.K. newspaper The Guardian, "I actually just lost a crown."
After being seen in a sling while promoting "Quantum of Solace" (2008), both he and Eon fended off rumors that his labral tear of the shoulder was the result of an on-set accident. "I've had it for years and I've probably aggravated it by jumping around on Bond movies," Craig told the U.K. newspaper The Daily Telegraph. "I've had it fixed now. It wasn't an essential operation but if I don't do it now, I could do something on the next movie and rip it out of its socket."
Craig did lose the tip of finger on that movie, telling Playboy in a November 2008 interview, "I lost the pad," calling it "nothing. It hit the press, though, because I was taken to the hospital. I was bleeding a lot. I had to get it cauterized. Filming stopped and everybody went, 'Oh my God! He sliced the end of his finger off.' They went looking for it but couldn't find it." It occurred, he said, on a shot where "I was smashing a door into somebody's face, and there was a sharp edge."
He also did suffer a knee injury, a meniscus tear, during a fight scene with Dave Bautista on "Spectre" (2015). Telling Entertainment Weekly it happened when the wrestler-turned-actor "was picking me up and throwing me," Craig noted that this particular type of injury "could have happened to me getting out the shower. … I hit it at the wrong angle and it just went."

The altercation and shooting happened around 10:40 p.m. on Monday night when an officer recognized a woman he had encountered in the past

Via Click 2 Houston:
Turner’s sister, Antoinette, said the woman has two children, both in their 20s, and three grandchildren. Antoinette also said the officer was Turner’s neighbor and she had previously complained about the officer harassing her.
Turner was on medication for schizophrenia, Antoinette said.
Witnesses said they heard Turner shout that she was pregnant. However, family members were not able to confirm that statement and police will not be able to confirm the claim until an autopsy is done.
According to authorities, the officer is an 11-year veteran and has been placed on administrative leave. If this officer lived nearby or has had previous contact with Pamela – he knew she had mental health issues!
He did not have to kill her!
