Remembering The ICON Donna Summer!
We are remembering one the Legends of Disco and R&B. May 17, 2012 - 6 Years Ago: Donna Summer, singer/songwriter dubbed the Queen of Disco, died of lung cancer at the age of 63, an illness she believed she contracted from inhaling toxic particles released after the September 11th terrorist attacks in New York in 2001. Born LaDonna Adrian Gaines (December 31, 1948 – May 17, 2012),better known as her stage name Donna Summer gained prominence during the disco era of the late 1970s
Her work with European producer Giorgio Moroder came to define and influence the sound and groove of dance music. She won 5 Grammy Awards, 6 American Music Awards, and had 3 multi-platinum albums and was the only recording artist to score 3 consecutive No. 1 double albums, 1978's "Live And More," 1979's "Bad Girls" and 1979's "On The Radio-Greatest Hits: Volumes I & II." Hot 100 hits included "Love to Love You Baby," "I Feel Love," "She Works Hard For The Money," "The Wanderer," "Heaven Knows," "Dim All The Lights," "Last Dance," "On The Radio," "Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger)" and "This Time I Know It's For Real," which were all included in her 14 Top Tens and her 4 No. 1's over a 13-month period, "MacArthur Park," "Hot Stuff," "Bad Girls" and "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)," a dynamic duet with Barbra Streisand.
She was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. Starring LaChanze (The Color Purple), Ariana DeBose (Hamilton, A Bronx Tale) and newcomer Storm Lever play Donna Summer, taking us through her tumultuous life, tempestuous loves and mega-watt musical hits.
