The Daily Buzz For June 23

Zoë Kravitz Calls Out "Insane" Casting Choices For Black Actresses
Between Big Little Lies, Rough Night, and Gemini, Zoë Kravitz is making some major career moves right now. She just needs Hollywood to catch up.
Kravitz spoke to The Edit about how, as a woman of color, she continues to struggle with casting directors who have narrow-minded views of racial diversity.

“I’m sure it would still happen now," the daughter of Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet said of missing out on parts because of her race. "When my name is brought up in a casting office, I’m sure the fact that I’m Black comes up in discussions. I just read a script in which there were two couples, and one was written as Black.
When I talked to the directors, they said I should play the wife of the Black guy. It’s insane that they still think the Black girl needs to be married to the Black guy, and everyone else is white. Their thinking is so compartmentalized.”

That's not always the case. In Big Little Lies, Kravitz was cast as Bonnie, the free-spirited wife of a white man, though no mention was made of her character's race within the context of the WASP-y Monterey community in which she lives.
Kravitz also singled out her role as Blair in the new bachelorette party comedy Rough Night as an opportunity to play against type.
“It was so fun to play a conservative rich bitch, with a bob and really nice clothes and heels," she told The Edit. "She is so unlike me, and so unlike what I am often cast as.”
Casting directors, are you listening?

#RHoA: Bethenny Frankel: FURIOUS Over NeNe Leakes' Fat Paycheck!
Most of the time, Real Housewives feuds are limited to their respective shows.
Teresa Giudice doesn't flip tables on The Real Housewives of Orange County. Lisa Rinna doesn't smash wine glasses on The Real Housewives of Atlanta.
But even from New York, Bethenny Frankel is reportedly fuming at a certain Real Housewives of Atlanta star star ... for a very big reason.

Remember how we already told you about NeNe Leakes' big fat paycheck?
The reality personality confirmed her return to The Real Housewives of Atlanta, but apparently it came at a steep price for the network.
As in, 2 million dollars for one season. She's an original cast member of that show and she's a big name, even outside of the Real Housewives fandom.

So, we get it. Some actors are extremely well-paid for television. And reality stars are definitely actors, too. But at the same time, that's a huge amount of money. And apparently none of the other Real Housewives of Wherever are getting that much. Reportedly, Bethenny Frankel is furious about this.
"Bethenny saw reports about what Nene is getting and is livid." Yeah, apparently Bethenny Frankel can't stand that Nene Leakes is getting paid more, according to RadarOnline."She wants to be the best paid housewife!"

Don't we all? Well, give or take the housewife bit.
Now, the report doesn't state that Bethenny is planning to take any particular action.
So we're not expecting, like, a walkout or, worse, for her to speak about it publicly.Sometimes all that you can do when you're pissed is just seethe about it.
And maybe quietly start badgering the network for a bigger cut.

Honestly? We have our doubts.

Bethenny's always seemed us to be a grounded person. Relative to other Real Housewives, we mean.
Not so much in the real world. Like, Eileen Davidson is nuts enough to be a Real Housewife, right?
But opposite someone like Kim Richards, Eileen has this glacial calm. Bethenny falls into that category. Her zingers can be a bit much sometimes, but that's part of her job. That means that she's usually one of the people you want to root for. But not necessarily one of the ones who hooks people's attention in a must watch kind of way.But even people who are otherwise pretty chill can totally change when we're talking about money.
NeNe Leakes is expected to have a central storyline in the upcoming season of RHOA.
And the "storyline" bit is a great reminder that every single reality show is a story sculpted by producers, carefully crafted in the editing room.
Not to mention the fact that everyone in front of the cameras is very conscious that they're there.
So if Bethenny wants to push for more pay for herself, she might need to get herself a central, compelling story.

As we said, we don't expect Bethenny to openly talk about this money situation.
Though it does occur to us that "Real Housewife jealous of another's income" wouldn't be the worst supervillain origin story we've ever heard.
She'd be called "Fake Housewife," of course.

We're just not sure that Bethenny Frankel has that kind of disposition.

And it “Don’t Stop.” Wu-Tang Clan delivers another banger as part of Mass Appeal’s Silicon Valley soundtrack.

Meanwhile, Inspectah Deck points to Irv Gotti’s reign as Murder Inc.’s leader. “Own boss, no third party,” he raps. “Produce more murder than Irv Gotti / Like I’m working on my third body / Deck kill it quick / 24/7 bed rest, that’s how ill it get.”

SERIOUSLY? Bill Cosby to hold ‘town halls’ on sexual assault following mistrial
Bill Cosby is planning a series of talks about sexual assault in the wake of his own sexual assault court case ending in a mistrial.

"Mr. Cosby wants to get back to work," his spokesman Andrew Wyatt said on WBRC's "Good Day Alabama" in Birmingham. "We're now planning town halls and we're going to be coming to this city sometime in July ... to talk to young people because this is bigger than Bill Cosby."

"This issue can affect any young person, especially young athletes of today, and they need to know what they're facing when they're hanging out and partying, when they're doing certain things that they shouldn't be doing," he continued. "And it also affects married men."
"Laws are changing. The statute of limitations for victims of sexual assault are being extended. So this is why people need to be educated," added spokeswoman Ebonee Benson. "A brush against the shoulder, anything at this point, can be considered sexual assault and it's a good thing to be educated about the laws."

On June 17, a jury decided that it could not reach a verdict on charges that Cosby drugged and molested a woman at his home outside Philadelphia in early 2004. Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele immediately announced he would retry the case against the legendary entertainer, and Judge Steven O'Neill said the trial would be within the next three or four months.

"We will evaluate and review our case. We will take a hard look at everything involved and then we will retry it," Steele said at a news conference. He confirmed that the alleged victim, Andrea Constand, would testify again at the new trial. "She's entitled to a verdict in this case," said Steele. "We will press forward to try to get that done, to get justice done."

I feel really happy; pregnancy has been good to me.
I’m in love, I’m looking forward to just sharing this next level of life. My whole life has been about working and being in the girl group and being on stage and being an actress, but now I get to really enjoy a bigger purpose, which is motherhood, so I’m really excited.

The “Power” actress shared gorgeous photos from her maternity shoot with Joey Rosado.
See a few shots below.
In addition to the baby, Naturi also gave some scoop on season 4 of “Power,” which returns this Sunday, June 25 on Starz.

In season four Tasha is the strongest she’s ever been. You’ll really get to see her pick up the pieces and handle her business while Ghost is in jail. You also can expect to see Tasha–without telling too much–fall in love this year. You get to see Tasha step up as a mother, this year she really has to fight to save her son Tariq and fight to protect her children while Ghost is in prison. He’s been gallivanting around for three seasons with Angela and now he’s like, oh it backfired. Duh, yes it backfired! So this year people will continue to root for Tasha she’s the woman you want on your side, even when you mess up.

BEAUTIFUL!

‘Power’ Season 4 Review: ‘Fast & Furious’ Sung Kang Brings More Pedal To Metal
Premiering on June 25 on Starz, the fourth season of Power is a sobering tale of truth and interconnected consequences. Intoxicated simultaneously by new castmembers and higher stakes than before, the Courtney Kemp-created series executive produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson sees the looming threats that have always hung over the New York City-set drama come crashing down to reveal a world of the worst possible situations – which makes for pretty great television.

Power already is the most-watched series on the premium cabler. But now with The Fast And The Furious alum Sung Kang joining the crew as an ambitious federal prosecutor determined to put Omari Hardwick’s James St. Patrick away for the killing of an FBI agent, this 10-episode season  truly has put pedal to the metal. I’ve been a fan of the drug-dealing drama and its brighter lights aspirations since its June 2014 debut, but this season, from what I’ve seen and as I say in my video review above, is one of those rare occasions where something you already are well disposed to exceeds your expectations anyway.

From the opening episode that picks up right where Season 3 ended, with Hardwick’s St. Patrick, aka Ghost, being arrested by his lady love and Assistant U.S. Attorney Angela Valdes (Lela Loren), this is a finely calibrated acceleration that goes for deep-wound revenge and new allegiances in front of and behind bars, where money gets tight and the harsh media spotlight reveals everyone’s underbelly.
With strong performances by Hardwick, Loren, Jackson as the ruthless Kanan, Joseph Sikora as Ghost’s closet friend and sometime drug kingpin partner Tommy, and Naturi Naughton, this season also sees a bigger presence for both Entourage alum Jerry Ferrara and Alani Anthony. Subtitled “His Darkest Hour,” Season 4 also has great portrayals of inner struggle and open conflict by Rotimi Akinosho as Dre and J.R. Ramirez as Tommy’s new second in command Julio. Add to that the sheer star power of Kang, who fits the Power vibe as naturally as fine tailoring, and a career-defining portrayal by the now-deceased Charlie Murphy as a vicious federal marshal.

No spoilers for a season of dirty money, clean money and the blur on both sides of the law. But when it all goes down to rock bottom for Ghost, his wife Tasha (Naughton), their son Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr), Tommy and Angela, almost no one is ready for the dramatic fall. That seems almost too heavy for Power, but at its core the reinvigorated bounce of the show navigates the peaks and valleys with ease, which again makes for highly watchable TV.

Whether you are an old fan or new to the game, this Starz series is sharp and smart TV you shouldn’t miss.

OOOPS: Michael Kors Protesters Take The Stage ... 'Animal Fur is Not Fashion!'
Michael Kors' friendly fashion chat was busted up by a pack of angry protesters who rushed the stage, surrounded the designer, then chanted wild animal noises at him.
Kors had just started a chat with Alina Cho at The Met Wednesday night in NYC when a group of anti-fur activists crashed the stage and yelled ... "Michael Kors is responsible for the deaths of countless innocent animals!" It only got more rowdy from there.
The designer screamed, "Get away from me!" ... and the group -- New York Animal Defenders -- was eventually escorted out.
