The Daily Buzz For Sept 26

Broadways’s Lin-Manuel Miranda Talks Success with 'GQ'
Lin-Manuel Miranda takes the cover of GQ‘s October 2016 issue, on newsstands September 27.
Here’s what the 36-year-old Hamilton creator and Mary Poppins actor had to share:

On chasing success: “There are people who have a hit that connects with great success, and then they chase that success for the rest of their lives, and that’s their doom. You think of artists who had that big thing, and then they go back to that well again and again with diminishing returns, but the world has moved on. And then there are the artists who really stay true to themselves… Bowie didn’t release like, Ziggy Stardust 2. He was on to the next incarnation of himself. And that’s being yourself too. Chasing wherever inspiration goes, even if it’s radically different from the thing that people know you as.”

On his emotional Tony’s acceptance speech after the Orlando shooting: “I don’t see myself as chasing these moments… I would have liked nothing better than to thank all my peers and the hundreds of people who went into making Hamilton possible, but this thing happened that morning, and you have to meet that moment. I think a lot about trying to meet the moment as honestly as possible, because I don’t pretend to have any answers. In fact, I have infinitely more questions than answers. You know, the opening line to Hamilton is one long run-on fucking question, which we puzzle out but never really answer. That’s all I control: I can control how I meet the world.”

#EMPIRE: 50 Cent Reacts To “Empire” Season 3 Premiere Ratings: “You Know I Love You Cookie”
G-Unit boss 50 Cent is getting an early laugh on “Power” rival TV show “Empire” and its season three premiere ratings. The rapper-turned-Hollywood star has reacted to the must-watch series’ return this week.
Fif went to Instagram Friday (September 23) to throw some shade at “Empire” but also dished out love for the show’s standout actress Taraji P. Henson who plays Cookie Lyon.

The series suffered a big drop in its 18-49 demographic in comparison to last year’s season two premiere.

These “Empire” Season 3 premiere numbers are big — the problem is, they’re not “Empire”-big. The Lee Daniels hip-hop soap opera tumbled 39 percent last night in the key 18-49 demographic versus its sophomore season start. It still handed Fox an easy Wednesday win, however, and was essentially steady with its Season 2 finale. “Empire” followed a decent debut from the new cop show “Lethal Weapon.” Last year, lead-in “Rosewood” fared better in the main demo, but worse among overall viewers. (The Wrap)
Despite the dip, “Empire” still managed to bring in over 10 million viewers.
“Empire” was the night’s top show, drawing a 4.1 in the demo and 10.8 million total viewers, but was down significantly from last fall’s season-two debut (6.7, 16.2 million). The series premiere of “Lethal Weapon” at 8 p.m. drew a 2.2 and 7.8 million viewers, down 8% in the demo, but up 4% in total viewers from the series premiere of “Rosewood” last fall in the same time period. (Variety)

Still a winner!

New Music: NEW MUSIC: JOJO FEAT. REMY MA – FAB
Following her impressive, retro-styled album title track “Mad Love,” the powerhouse vocalist doubles down with the infectious new single, “FAB” featuring Remy Ma.
One look at the title and you might assume the ladies are all about being fabulous, although they are, it is in-fact an anthem against all the “fake ass bitches.”
“Fake ass bitches / When they smile in your face, but behind you it ain’t well wishes / When they eatin’ all the food off your plate and they don’t do dishes,” sings JoJo.

The songstress says the track isn’t just about one gender, and that it’s also meant to be a celebration. “This song is very direct,” she told The FADER. “We’ve all encountered fake ass bitches, no matter the gender. So I wrote a song about it, calling them out but also celebrating the real ones.”
Following the title track and the Wiz Khalifa-assisted single “F**k Apologies,” “FAB.” is the latest release from JoJo’s long-awaited third album Mad Love., which hit stores on Oct. 14.

New Hip Hop: Jermaine Dupri & Da Brat – ‘Big Brother X Lil Sister’
Jermaine Dupri and Da Brat show off their sibling love on their latest collaboration, “Big Brother x Lil Sister.”
Over a soulful instrumental, produced by Jahlil Beats, the duo celebrates their bond, going back and forth like a big bro and little sis for real.

“One thing’s for certain,” raps JD. “You see her, you see me.” Then, Brat comes in with a classic hip-hop reference. “We in this bitch like the 2016 EPMD.”
If the song sounds familiar, it’s because they performed it in the studio when they announced their joint mixtape, Business As Usual.

“Big Brother x Lil Sister” follows the Gucci-inspired “Alessandro Michele,” which dropped earlier this month, and The-Dream-assisted “F U Pay Me.”

Pharrell Williams And Wife Helen Lasichanh Expecting Second Child
Pharrell Williams and his wife, Helen Lasichanh, are expecting their second child – Pharrell’s rep confirms to PEOPLE.
The news was announced as the couple stepped out to a dinner hosted by CHANEL-to celebrate their new fragrance N°5 L’EAU. Helen’s patterned top showed off her growing baby bump.

The couple, who tied the knot in October 2013, are already parents to son, Rocket Ayer, who is 7 years old.
While chatting with Oprah during an interview in 2014, Pharrell explained the meaning behind their son’s name.
“In the same way the Indians named their children after a force or animal or element, we named him after a man-made machine that was meant to go up, meant to ascend,” he explained.

Congrats to the couple!

So Long! Kevin Garnett I'm Retiring...!
Kevin Garnett, the Timberwolves’ all-time greatest player, will not don a jersey for Minnesota this season. After coming to a buyout agreement to end his second stint with the Wolves with one year remaining on his two-year, $16.5 million contract, the 40-year-old has decided to retire. Garnett made the announcement early Friday evening on Instagram.

“I’m just thankful. I never would’ve thought people loved me like this,” Garnett says in the black-and-white video, which shows him wandering through an empty Target Center, where the team plays its home games. “We going to be all right, man. I don’t expect this to be easy, but so far, so good. Stay tuned.” He also added a caption that read, “to be continued.”
Both the Timberwolves and the Boston Celtics, with whom Garnett spent six seasons and won his only NBA championship, released statements regarding the future Hall of Famer’s decision to walk away from the game.
News of Garnett’s buyout agreement and impending retirement was first reported by the Star Tribune on Friday afternoon. According to the Associated Press, the team will now waive Garnett, which allows him to still collect the $8 million in salary he was set to make during the 2016-17 season.

Garnett first came to the Timberwolves in 1995 when the team picked him fifth overall in that year’s NBA draft. Garnett, part of a trend of high school players jumping straight to the pros, spent 12 seasons with Minnesota before getting traded to Boston.
Garnett returned to the Timberwolves midway through the 2014-15 season after spending the previous year-plus with the Brooklyn Nets. He came back to his original team on the insistence of the late coach Flip Saunders after agreeing to waive his no-trade clause, and in July 2015, he signed the two-year deal he now won’t complete.
In total, Garnett played 970 of his career 1,462 games for Minnesota, logging a total of 36,189 minutes. When condensed, that equals about 27 straight days and nights of playing basketball.
It is unclear what the future holds for the 15-time all-star, but it would not be surprising to see him in the front office of an NBA team. Two years ago, Garnett laid out another option.

“I want to buy the Timberwolves,” he told Yahoo’s Marc J. Spears in 2014. “Put a group together and perhaps some day try to buy the team. That’s what I want.”

Congrats and Good Luck!

Brad Pitt probably won’t be prosecuted for allegedly assaulting Maddox
Brad Pitt still hasn’t formally released any statement about the accusations of child abuse, or the confirmation that both the FBI and child protection services are looking into his actions on a private plane. Brad did issue a statement hours after Angelina Jolie’s divorce filing became public, but since then, he’s relied on “unnamed sources” telling his side of the story to People Magazine, E! News and Page Six, all of which have been carrying stories in which “sources” insist on the varying degrees to which Brad did NOT strike his oldest son Maddox. E! News had yet another story about just that on Friday – a source swearing up and down that Brad and Maddox just got into a typical father-son fight. Because a “typical fight” usually ends with the mother bolting immediately, taking all of the kids and immediately filing for divorce. Meanwhile, at least two Brad-sources have been telling all to People:
Brad is wrecked: “He is just wrecked by this,” a source close to the actor tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story. “He got a heads-up [about the filing] two days before, and he was appealing to her to do this quietly – not to save the marriage but to consider the well-being of the children – and it was ignored,” the source contends.

Brad is a great dad: “He is one of the best dads I have ever known,” says a source who knows the family and children well and has spent time with them for many years. “He’s very good at keeping things calm and telling them how they should be behaving, reminding them to be kind, to be respectful to each other. He has always been there for the kids.”

[From People Magazine]
Ooookay, let’s unpack this one: “He got a heads-up [about the filing] two days before…” The incident on the plane happened on Wednesday, September 14th. In her divorce filing, she lists September 15th (two Thursdays ago) as the date of separation. She filed the divorce papers on Monday, September 19th. So he got a “heads up” on Saturday, September 17th, two days after she left him and took the kids. “He was appealing to her to do this quietly – not to save the marriage but to consider the well-being of the children – and it was ignored.” Is this the moral high ground he wants to stake? That HE is the one who is thinking of the kids’ best interest… after Angelina bolted following an incident that was so earth-shattering to their marriage that she had no choice but to file for divorce and ask the court for full legal custody? An incident with which Brad can’t even get the details straight? Speaking of that incident, TMZ reports that it’s unlikely that Brad will face any legal repercussions over it:
It’s almost certain Brad Pitt will not be prosecuted for any alleged assault against his son … so say multiple law enforcement sources involved in the case. Our sources say, with the conflicting accounts of what happened between Brad and 15-year-old Maddox 30,000 feet above the ground, there’s no way to conclusively prove Brad intentionally inflicted harm on his son.

As we reported, there are conflicting stories about the events leading to the confrontation on the jet. Based on all of our sources we believe the most credible sequence of events is that Maddox said something to Brad that pissed him off, Brad then lunged at his son, Angelina stepped in between them and at that point there was some physical contact between Brad and Maddox.
It appears Brad made contact with Maddox somewhere in the vicinity of the shoulder area. The biggest issue — whether it was intentional or inadvertent. It’s the job of prosecutors to prove it was intentional, and we’re told that would be extremely difficult. On top of that, we’re told DCFS social workers saw no evidence of injuries on Maddox … none. And there’s more … no one filed a police report after the incident.

Finally, our sources say these cases are particularly difficult because of the blurred line between abuse and parental discipline. As we reported, since the incident occurred in the air, the FBI has jurisdiction, and our law enforcement sources say it’s “highly unlikely” anything will come of the agency’s probe. On the other hand, the L.A. County Dept. of Children’s Services has a broader scope than the FBI. DCFS will go beyond the jet incident and talk to the kids and parents about the overall living situation.

[From TMZ]
No one filed a police report, but someone did call and leave an anonymous tip with DCFS. And the fact that no one disputes that Brad was acting erratically on the plane and during refueling in Minnesota… well, who even knows. I mean, did anyone think “Oh, Brad’s going to jail”?? No – this is the kind of scandal/incident where someone will end up in rehab, not jail. Hint, hint.

Diddy Donates $1 Million To Howard University
Sean “Diddy” Combs gave back to his alma mater, Howard University, presenting the school’s president – Dr. Wayne Frederick – with a $1 million check on Thursday.
“One of the biggest blessings is getting the chance to one day be able to give back,” Diddy said before a sold-out crowd at the Verizon Center. “And to support the people that supported you.”
“If I didn’t get some help, I wouldn’t be where I’m at today,” he said.
According to WUSA9, it’s the first donation to establish The Sean Combs Scholarship Fund.
Diddy, who attended Howard University in the 1990s, left before graduating – but, received an honorary doctorate from the school in 2014. He attributed his time at the college with assisting him with his success.
“I didn’t graduate from Howard. I was blessed to get my honorary degree but that doesn’t tell the whole story,” he said. “Because the only reason why I was able to chase my dreams was the empowerment that Howard gave me, the support that they gave me, the first two years.”

“The first day I stepped on campus it was like heaven. You know heaven,” he continued. “I mean, that’s the best way, it’s so much love. It’s an indescribable place, you have to see it.”
Howard will begin awarding the scholarships to undergraduate students pursuing a business degree in the fall of 2017. They must have a 3.0 GPA and demonstrate financial need.
In addition to monetary assistance, recipients of The Sean Combs Scholarship Fund will be assigned a mentor from Combs Enterprises and spend a summer interning with Bad Boy Entertainment or Revolt Media & TV.

Diddy was in Washington D.C. for his Bad Boy Family Reunion Tour stop when he presented the check.

OH LORD! Tamar Braxton Hospitalized!
Tamar Braxton has a few things to get off her chest. Today, the Braxton Family Values reality star and singer took to Instagram, sharing that she is in the hospital, but wanted to set the record straight about her personal life. This week, there were reports that she had made her Instagram page private, because of some alleged marital drama going on between her and her hubby Vincent Herbert.
She says that all is well in the Braxton-Herbert household and also addresses reports that claim she unfollowed her friends Toya Wright and Monica Brown on Instagram, after their appearance on The Real.
She writes:

Gabrielle Union Attends ‘Birth Of A Nation’ Hollywood Premiere, Opens Up About Her Role In Film & Director Nate Parker
Gabrielle Union attended the “Birth of a Nation” premiere on Wednesday night, gorgeous in a white Rodarte gown.
PEOPLE caught up with the Being Mary Jane star – who is featured in the upcoming film – on the red carpet, and she explained why she took on her role and also expressed her thoughts on director, Nate Parker.
“He’s a man who is evolving,” Gabrielle said of the director, whose 17-year-old rape allegations recently resurfaced. “He’s a man who wants to evolve and is doing the work to evolve. He’s not that 19-year-old kid. He’s a father of five girls, and that’s not lost on him, one of whom just started college. It’s not lost on him.”
“I refuse to leave him in the same place that I found him,” she continued. “And I know he’s a good man. I know he’s a good man, and he’s a brilliant filmmaker, but just like all of us, we’re all evolving and we all have a tremendous amount of space to learn and to grow. Once you allow yourself to be humbled, that’s when real growth really, really happens, and that’s what I think we’re all seeing.”
In an op-ed she penned for the LA Times earlier this month, the actress admitted that since hearing of Nate’s story, she has found herself “in a state of stomach-churning confusion,” as a rape survivor herself.
She plays a woman that is sexually assaulted in the film, and says it does not trouble her to revisit her own painful past experience as part of the larger conversation.

“I take the responsibility very seriously, and I took the film so I could talk about black liberation as well as sexual violence,” she explained. “Because my character didn’t have any lines, I knew that I was going to have this opportunity on the press tour to talk about the intersectionality of the movements of my blackness and my woman-ness, and that sexual violence has always existed at that crossroads.”

Gabby added, “I’ve always been open to that, and because that’s why I took the film I’ve never shirked that responsibility – and I don’t intend to anytime soon.”

Whoopi Goldberg ‘Probably’ Leaving ‘The View’ After This Season
Whoopi Goldberg is expected to take her final bow at the end of this season of “The View.”
Goldberg appeared on “The Wendy Williams Show” Friday, in which she revealed she would most likely not return to “The View” for its 21st season.
“So in September, when everyone comes back for the new season, you might not be there.” Williams probed.
“No, probably not,” Goldberg said off-hand. “I have to [move on], baby, because I have to go and grow. I got stuff to do, I got movies I need to direct, I got books I got to finish.”

Goldberg, who has co-hosted the show since 2007, has maintained seniority over all the current hosts with the exception of Joy Behar, who joined the show in 1997 but left from 2013-15.
“This was great and I love doing it,” Goldberg continued. “But its been a while. They’re in their 20th season. They did this without me — I’ve been there for half of it but not all of it.”
Season 20 premiered on ABC Sept. 6 with many new additions to the panel of hosts, including Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin, and Jedediah Bila. Other hosts include Raven-Symoné, Candace Cameron Bure and Paula Faris.

In a recent interview with Variety, Goldberg commented that she wasn’t sure how long she would stay and that she is “taking things one day at a time.”
