The Daily Buzz for Sept 21

Empire's Terrence Howard Rules in Fall Fashion
With suits on the wane, fall fashion offers a well-mannered take on dressing for the office.  Today’s silhouette is relaxed, but masculine—and is not to be taken for granted. Whether you prefer a fluid blazer or soft leather jacket, the options remain appropriate and polished.

When it comes to this kind of soft power, Terrence Howard embodies it with an understated and adventurous style that his TV alter ego—Lucious Lyon on Empire—would surely understand.  Here’s some insight into his emperor state of mind:

You once said that you like to take acting roles that help you learn something about yourself. Why is that?
Everything in life is these octaves where we keep going back and forth. There are so many different octaves of life where we keep going back and forth. There is no action—everything is a reaction from something else. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.  We are supposed to pick up something along the way.  Now, I can go and play the same character that I played a million times before.

I asked Sidney Poitier about ten years ago,  “Aren’t you going to do any more projects?” and he replied, “What am I going to do, an impersonation of myself?”  I believe it is important for you as an artist to keep growing. No artist wants to paint the same picture again and again. In order for your artistry to grow you have to challenge your self with other characteristics and other pieces of human nature that will allow you to become more human.

Which role have you gained the most wisdom from?

I have played some of the darker sides. A good example is the character that I am playing now: Lucious Lyon on Empire. At first, the character started off with ALS, where you can understand the immediacy of what he wanted to accomplish due to the disease and time. Now, here is no longer the immediacy because the ALS is gone so he is doing dark things. I am trying to get to the root of why he is doing dark things. Truly, I have never been able to play roles of someone who is trying to strive for an angelic nature, so that I can understand the nature of God or agape, the principle of love. I think by acting these roles will help me round off better as a human being.
What has been your greatest achievement?

My greatest achievement is being a father. I am naturally made to be a daddy.

You studied engineering.  How did your path go from engineering to Hollywood?

I found that in academia they were stuck on axioms that did not make any sense.  The term “irrational” means without logic and void of reason and we base our entire math and science on the irrational numbers—such as the square root of 2 and pi. The universe is not irrational, the universe is rational.  I think we need to question Euclid, and some of the Pythagorean  teachings.  Everything in the universe expands and contracts; therefore we have to have inner space to allow for contraction.  And our science does not allow for inner space.  I left academia because of the dogma that has been taught and indoctrination.  You have to give this answer and not question the things that have been placed before us.

How does fame feel since the success of Empire?

I think Empire is showing an empowering nature of what can occur when you do music and business and focus just as much on the business side as you do on the music. The message of the show is that we have to be responsible with what type of entertainment we are providing. The fact that it is opening the doors for more tolerant relationship between a gay son and a heterosexual father—and the questions that arise within the black community and in all communities.  I think that is a beautiful side of the show. I hope that we explore some of those things. I feel like Archie Bunker. I love being the modern day Archie Bunker  who is having his view of his world crash for a minute just  so  he can rebuild and have a more streamlined vehicle to go into the future with.
And you have recorded an album?

Man, I have been writing songs since I was about six or seven. My mother had a beautiful voice as did my grandmother. The family would get together and music was a part of my every day dialogue.

What advice can you give to an aspiring actor?

To thine own self be true. Maintain the truth of self. And you will fit within the rest of  the universe. Follow your instincts.  Get to your goal and look straight ahead.

#RHoA: 'Real Housewives Of Atlanta' Season 9: Porsha Williams Says She & Kandi Burruss 'Did Not Have A Fight'
Porsha Williams has cleared the air after reports claimed she went toe-to-toe with her Bravo 'The Real Housewives of Atlanta' star Kandi Burruss.
Porsha Williams has spoken out after reports swirled that she nearly got physical with her Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta co-star Kandi Burruss.
Of course the cameras were said to be running when the two nearly came to blows, but Williams has now come forward and said it never happened.

“No we did not [have a fight],” she said during her co-hosting gig on Dish Nation. “There was a misunderstanding, that Kandi and I had. I can’t say whether this was on or off camera. It was definitely a misunderstanding, but no I didn’t have a [mental] breakdown. Sometimes if you have a misunderstanding with a friend you disengage and go to your car and you leave.”
Rumors swirled that Williams and Burruss got into a screaming match after Burruss and some of the other ladies asked Williams how she was doing with her anger management classes. Williams took the courses after she attacked Kenya Moore after season six, got into a physical fight with Cynthia Bailey in the beginning of season eight and went on to try to fight her assistant in a brutal scene that didn’t air on the show but took place later that season.

Word is Williams got upset and ended up going back-and-forth with Burruss.
One thing reports and Williams’ account of events does seem to agree on is that Williams left before things could go too far.
The Real Housewives of Atlanta returns to Bravo this Fall.

White Republican Pollster Frank Luntz Coached NFL’er Cam Newton On How To Discuss Race In Public
If you’ve noticed a shift in how Cam Newton now discusses race, we may have discovered the reason. Since the Panther’s Super Bowl loss, some suggest that the NFL star’s public talking points concerning race have become more ‘white washed’. According to Black Sports Online (via Sports Illustrated),
Part of the shift has to do with GOP pollster and PR advisor Frank Luntz. Luntz has worked with the Panthers before—Deadspin outlined some of his work with them and Cam Newton in a piece from 2014, which included, as the article says, “a campaign to enhance the image of several players and the organization.” He was called in (by whom is unclear) this off-season to help Newton frame discussions on race among other topics, according to people close to Newton. Luntz, who declined comment on this story through a spokeswoman, is often credited with prompting the phrase “climate change” rather than global warming and helping Newt Gingrich with his 1990s “Contract With America.”

The site adds, Luntz doesn’t like Kaepernick at all, meaning he isn’t a fan of someone protesting for racial equality and ending police brutality. Just think about that for a minute. Newton who was pretty outspoken about race issues in the past and has been a target of racism and prejudice, now says the country is beyond racism.
Earlier this month, Cam was made headlines for his comments about race. During a recent interview, the NFL’er was asked about Colin Kaepernick’s decision to not stand during the national anthem. Newton decided not to choose a side, explaining:
What I can’t fathom is how does 1/8 of an inch, something so small, be the difference in such a big commodity in our whole lifetime, and that’s the thickness of our skin.

He added: And under that, we’re all the same color. And that’s the big picture. A lot of scrutiny happens when the athletes start talking about race, but the truth of the matter is we just gotta do right by each other. No matter what color you are. Certain things that has happened in our life, in our lifetime, is kind of embarrassing to be affiliated with, but it still happens. Who am I to say, Colin you’re wrong. And who am I to say, you’re right. We all have the right to think whatever we want to think.
Check out a few reactions on twitter below.
Do you think Cam having an alleged white consultant coach him on discussing race has influenced his point of view?

Angelina Jolie files for divorce from Brad Pitt after 12 years together
Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, her attorney has said.
“This decision was made for the health of the family. She will not be commenting, and asks that the family be given its privacy at this time,” Robert Offer said in a statement on Tuesday.
According to the website TMZ.com, which first reported the story, the actor and director cited irreconcilable differences as the cause for the split. The couple have been together since 2005 and married in 2014.

Jolie has reportedly asked for physical custody of their six children, with Pitt allowed visitation rights. She is not asking for spousal support. The date of separation is listed as 15 September.

In a statement to People magazine, Pitt said: “I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the wellbeing of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.”
They originally met on the set of the action comedy Mr and Mrs Smith and were also seen on screen together in 2015’s By the Sea, a drama about an ailing marriage, written and directed by Jolie. While Mr and Mrs Smith was warmly received by critics and a commercial hit, making $478m worldwide, By the Sea was less of a success. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw called it “indulgent” and it made $3.3m at the box office.

Despite the film’s focus on relationship problems, Jolie was quick to deny it was a reflection of their marriage.
“Brad and I have our issues, but if the characters were even remotely close to our problems we couldn’t have made the film,” she told the Telegraph. “To be clear: we have fights and problems like any other couple. We have days when we drive each other absolutely mad and want space, but the problems in the movie aren’t our specific problems.”
Jolie was previously married to the actor Jonny Lee Miller after meeting on the set of Hackers in 1996 and Billy Bob Thornton after the pair made Pushing Tin in 1999.

The actor vehemently denied that she began an affair with Pitt when they worked together as he was still married to Jennifer Aniston. “To be intimate with a married man, when my own father cheated on my mother, is not something I could forgive,” she said. “I could not look at myself in the morning if I did that. I wouldn’t be attracted to a man who would cheat on his wife.”
Rumours of a split have been circulating since 2010, when they successfully sued the News of the World after false allegations that they were separating.

Pitt will next be seen in Allied, a thriller about the second world war, alongside Marion Cotillard while Jolie is working on Netflix documentary First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers.

Unboxing The Yeezy Boost 350 V2
The year of Yeezy continues to roll on as in just a few days the highly anticipated Yeezy Boost 350 V2’s will drop, hence, inciting the kinds of hysteria that can only be matched by the crowds at his Life Of Pablo tour.
Ever since debuting earlier this year at Yeezy Season 3 fashion show, the grey sneakers with the bright orange stripe has been the subject of much talk and hype.
The standout orange stripe—the colorway is officially labeled as “SOLAR RED”—runs clear across the outer sides of the sneakers with a stamp reading “SPLY-350.” What’s does “SPLY” stand for you ask? Who knows? We’re talking about Kanye West here. That could be the title of his next album or even his next child. More like “Yeezy Supply,” but whatever.
Check out the unboxing of the V2’s above and get a closer look at what hypebeasts and Yeezus apostles will be lining up to cop on September 24 and let us know if these are worthy of all the hoopla surrounding them.

Marc Jacobs offers BS apology for his comments on the NYFW dreadlocks
As we discussed last Friday, Marc Jacobs is an idiot. Jacobs did his NYFW show last Thursday, and he decided that all of his models should be “styled” with multi-colored dreadlocks. Most of the models who walked his runway were white, including Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid. The reaction was instant: people accused Jacobs of cultural appropriation for using dreadlocks-as-fashion. As I said last week, I understand that this is a sensitive issue, but I also don’t think it’s even the biggest “cultural appropriation” issue out there these days. My thought was that Jacobs had used dreads specifically to get attention, and he made a big show of not understanding why people commented. It really did seem famewhore-driven, you know? Initially, in the wake of the controversy, Jacobs wrote this on his Instagram:
“And all who cry ‘cultural appropriation’ or whatever nonsense about any race of skin color wearing their hair in a particular style or manner – funny how you don’t criticize women of color for straightening their hair. I respect and am inspired by people and how they look. I don’t see color or race- I see people. I’m sorry to read that so many people are so narrow minded…Love is the answer. Appreciation of all and inspiration from anywhere is a beautiful thing. Think about it.”

[Via People]

Yeah, people did “think about it,” because we all need to be patronized by a white guy when it comes to sensitive racial matters, right? So the internet kerfuffle carried on, made worse by Jacobs’ comments. And now he’s finally apologizing. Sort of. He posted this on his Instagram:
What kind of dumbass apology is that? “I apologize for the lack of sensitivity unintentionally expressed by my brevity.” Your brevity wasn’t the issue, dude. As for “Nothing is gained from spreading hate by name calling and bullying” – yeah, maybe you should think about that before you accuse black women of “cultural appropriation” for straightening their hair. Think about that before you refuse to acknowledge your tremendous white privilege within the fashion industry.
