The Daily Buzz For Dec 21

The FORCE was with Them! 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Crushes Records, Topping The Largest Box Office EVER!
Star Wars: The Force Awakens stormed the box office and walked away with an estimated $238 million in its first three days domestically (including $57 million in Thursday night "previews") along with another $279 million internationally for a massive $517 million worldwide opening. Suffice to say, this shatters the domestic box office opening weekend record of $208.8 million set by Jurassic World earlier this year, but the record-breaking doesn't end there.

In just its first day of release Force Awakens brought in an estimated $120.5 million setting a new record for the largest Friday, opening day and single day. All on its own, that opening day was also enough to break the previous December opening weekend record of $84.62 million set by The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in 2012

BOOM!

Adele Tickets Sell Out Fast: Fans Slam Ticketmaster, Scalpers on Twitter
Tickets for Adele's North American tour went on sale Thursday (Dec. 17), and her record breaking album 25 and single "Hello" should have been indication that tickets for the 56-date live trek would be hard to get.
As the general on-sale launched at 10 a.m. local time, fans rushed Ticketmaster to try and buy tickets, and droves of fans were locked out of the sale or realized after long wait times that seats were sold out. Furious fans flooded Twitter to yell at Ticketmaster and scalpers, who quickly scooped up much-wanted seats for re-sale (despite precautions that Adele put in place on her website to avoid the situation).

While some fans were angry at Ticketmaster and scalpers, other took their situation more in stride, laughing at the very idea of being able to score one of the hottest tickets of 2016.

Rita Ora files lawsuit against Jay Z’s Roc Nation
Jay Z may have just beat one lawsuit, but it looks as though he already has another to contend with.\
According to reports, singer and actress Rita Ora has filed suit against the mogul’s Roc Nation record label and seeks to be let go from her contract. The lawsuit reportedly claims Ora’s contract, which she signed at 18, violates California law, and that Roc Nation has neglected her as an artist while it focused on other divisions of the company such as it’s sports management venture and even Jay Z’s music streaming service, Tidal.

“When Rita signed, Roc Nation and its senior executives were very involved with her as an artist,” the suit proclaims. “As Roc Nation’s interests diversified, there were fewer resources available and the company suffered a revolving door of executives. Rita’s remaining supporters at the label left or moved on to other activities, to the point where she no longer had a relationship with anyone at the company.”

Ora goes on to claim in the suit that Roc Nation’s distribution switch from Sony to Universal has proven to be detrimental to her career and that the label is more or less now “diminished” with “only a handful of admittedly worthy heritage superstar artists.”

The 25-year-old “Body On Me” singer hopes to use California’s “seven year rule” law which lets artists end most contracts after that length of time. Unfortunately for Ora, usually when that law is enacted to break a contract the record company is able to countersue for “lost profits” depending on how close the artist was to fulfilling their album output agreement.

In Ora’s case, she has only released one album, 2012’s Ora, despite her contract calling for five.
Since launching in 2008 and signing a number of acts including J. Cole, Jay Electronica, Rihanna, Vic Mensa, and Willow Smith, only Cole and label president Jay Z have released more than one album through the label.

Meanwhile, Ora is no longer listed on the Roc Nation website amongst its other artists.

Michael Jackson’s Thriller 30X Multi-Platinum
The greatest of all time! The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the Estate of Michael Jackson, Epic Records and Legacy Recordings announced today that Michael Jackson’s THRILLER is the first album in RIAA Gold & Platinum Program history to be certified 30X Multi-Platinum for U.S. sales, continuing The King of Pop’s reign as the biggest selling artist of all time with worldwide sales of over 100 million for Thriller and 1 billion overall. “RIAA has awarded Gold & Platinum records on behalf of the music business for nearly 60 years, but this is the first time an artist has crossed the 30X multi-Platinum plateau,” said Cary Sherman, Chairman & CEO, RIAA.

“We are honored to celebrate the unique status of Thriller in Gold & Platinum history. What an exceptional achievement and testament to Thriller’s enduring spot in our hearts and musical history.” Michael Jackson’s masterpiece Thriller, produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson, won a record setting 8 Grammys, more than any album ever, and has been earning awards and setting new standards of success since its release on November 30, 1982.

Thriller spent nearly 2 -1/2 years on the Billboard album chart and holds a modern day record of 37 weeks at #1. It was the first album in history to spend each of its first 80 weeks in the album chart’s Top 10, a feat only reached by one other album in the more than three decades since. During its 112th week on Billboard’s album chart, it became the first title ever to be certified RIAA 20Xmulti-Platinum (October 30, 1984). Worldwide, Thriller went to #1 in practically every country in the world, including the UK, France, Italy, Australia, Denmark, Belgium, South Africa, Spain, Ireland, New Zealand, Canada and apartheid South Africa. #tbt but not a #tbt #michaeljackson #thril
