The Daily Buzz For March 20

Kerry Washington looking Bobalicious on EBONY'S March/April Issue!
Right in time for Spring, "Scandal" star Kerry Washington covers the double March/April issue of EBONY where she opens up about her personal passions, latest projects and carefully guarded family life.

Kerry also explains to the mag why she won't ignore the "race" issue and has no fear in speaking up about it, even if it's deemed an "inappropriate" time. In case you missed it, she ruffled a few feathers when she talked about Ferguson, MO and #BlackLivesMatter on the Emmy red carpet. When asked about that moment, she told EBONY,

“I was really broken that morning” (thinking about the difficulty of being Black in America). Watching that funeral, I was just broken. And I take all of who I am into a room.  That’s where my mind was that day. I’m not going to let anyone segment me or make me exclude parts of who I am because they may be threatening.”

The SPRING 2015 March/April 2015 issue is on newsstands now, and of course, you can watch Kerry in action as Olivia Pope on "Scandal", Thursdays at 9 p.m. on ABC.

‘Empire’ Defeats Madonna to Claim the Number 1 Spot on the Billboard 200
Sorry Madge,  But the Empire strikes Back! For the first time since 1998, Madonna will have to settle for the number two spot on Billboard’s 200 list.
The Empire soundtrack debuted at number one this week, earning 130,000 equivalent album units and becoming the first television soundtrack to debut at number one in five years.

Madonna’s Rebel Heart debuted with 121,000 equivalent album units.
It’s important to note, however, that Madonna’s Rebel Heart sold more albums than Empire (116,000 versus 110,000), but the soundtrack garnered more streams and individual track purchases, hence it claiming the number one spot.
The last album to block Madonna from the top spot on Billboard’s 200 list, you ask? The Titanic soundtrack.
Congratulations to the cast of Empire!

DISTURBING! The Body Of Black Man Found Hanging From A Tree In Mississippi

An African-American man was found hanging from a tree in Claiborne County, Mississippi, on Thursday, according to a statement from the FBI.
Local law enforcement officials found the man’s body in the woods near his home, the FBI said. The officials were conducting a search for the man who had been missing since early this month.

The body was found with a bed sheet around the neck and wearing a skull cap, authorities said at a press conference later held by the FBI and the Claiborne County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities believe the dead man to be 54-year-old Otis Byrd, CNN reports.

It is not yet known whether he was killed or took his own life.
Two investigations are now examining his death -- one by local authorities and another by federal authorities to determine whether there may be federal civil rights violations. The FBI, the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi are all looking into the death, CNN reports.
"Earlier in the day, the Claiborne County Sheriffs Department and the Mississippi [Department of] Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks conducted a ground search for a man who had been missing since early March,” said a statement released by the FBI. “Officers located a man hanging in the woods near Roddy Road a half mile from his last known residence.”

Byrd's father, Willie Shorter, said that a pastor visited his home Thursday morning to deliver the news.
"I was mad," Shorter said, describing the emotions he felt. "How would you feel if it was your child hanging from a tree?"

Shorter said that he declined to visit the scene and that he's been trying to cope with the news all day. "I'm angry, but what am I supposed to do about it?" he said.
Shorter and his wife, Janine, said they last saw Byrd on March 1. However, friends say they dropped him off at a casino in nearby Vicksburg the following day and have not seem him since. Family members filed a missing persons report on March 8.
"The sheriff's department contacted the MBI [Mississippi Bureau of Investigation] and FBI for forensic and investigative assistance,” the FBI said in its statement about the discovery of the body. “Investigators are currently processing the scene for evidence to determine the cause and manner of death.”

Marvin Gaye’s Family Wants T.I. To Fork Over Mo Money After $7.4 Million Settlement
Marvin Gaye’s family isn’t done digging in the pockets of the ‘Blurred Lines’ hitmakers just yet! The family of the legendary singer is now moving forward with going after rapper T.I. for his involvement with the song.
Reports TMZ: Marvin Gaye’s family didn’t scored enough in their “Blurred Lines” lawsuit — now they’re going after T.I. and a few record labels to pay up … on top of the $7.4 million they won last week.

Only Pharrell and Robin Thicke were hit with the judgement last week, but attorneys for the Gaye family want Universal Music, Interscope Records and Star Trak Entertainment to fork over some cash too — as well as T.I., who rapped on ‘Blurred.’

Attaching the record labels could be the first step toward the family’s other goal — getting an injunction to stop distribution of the hit song until Marvin gets a writer’s credit … and, of course, the family gets royalties.
And don’t forget … the family is also still deciding whether to file a separate suit over Pharrell’s “Happy.” Personally I think they’re being greedy at this point!

FLOTUS POWER: Michelle Obama Spreads Her "Let Girls Learn" Initiative In Tokyo
Rocking a floral Altuzarra jacket and skirt combo in the Balthazar floral print, including a custom skirt (made into a flared A-line silhouette instead of the usual front-slit pencil skirt silhouette it comes in), First Lady Michelle Obama arrived at the Ikura Guest House in Tokyo.

She spoke to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's wife, Akie Abe, at a girls' education event about her new campaign, Let Girls Learn.  Here's a snippet of what she had to say, taken from speech sent out via the White Houe:
"...While we have made tremendous strides in girls’ education in the United States and Japan, women in both our countries still struggle to balance the needs of their families with the demands of their careers. We still struggle with the outdated belief that a woman cannot be both an accomplished professional and a devoted mother; that she has to choose between the two.

But the reality is that when we put limits like this on women’s lives, we stifle their potential, and, more importantly, we miss out on so much of what they have to offer our societies. And for me, that’s where this issue gets personal."

Mrs. Obama continued with her own personal and inspiring story:
See, I grew up in a working-class neighborhood, a place where hardly anyone went to university. Many people worked long hours for low salaries, struggled to pay their bills. As a young girl I was bright, outgoing, with plenty of thoughts and opinions of my own, but like a lot of young women, I was often primarily defined by my relationship to the men in my life. I was my father’s daughter, or, even though I was just as smart as my brother -- I could hit a ball just as far, I could run just as fast -- I was always just his little sister.

When I got to school, I sometimes encountered teachers who assumed that a girl from a humble background like mine wouldn’t be a successful student. I was even told that I would never get accepted to the prestigious school like Princeton University, so I shouldn’t even apply. Like so many girls across the globe, I got the message that someone like me wasn’t supposed to have big dreams; that I should keep my head down, my voice quiet, and I should make myself just a little smaller to fit other people’s modest expectations.

But I was lucky. I had parents who believed in me, who urged me to speak up and make myself heard in the world. So I held fast to my dreams. I worked hard in school. I went ahead and I applied to Princeton -- and I got accepted. I went on to become a lawyer, a city government employee, a hospital executive, and the director of an organization that trained young people to serve their communities. And most of all, I became a mother, which is by far the most important job I will ever have in my life.

Karl Lagerfeld Photographs Lady Gaga For The Hollywood Reporter Cover
She’s always up for an impromptu photo shoot, and Lady Gaga teamed up with Karl Lagerfeld at Coco Chanel’s Parisian apartment for the March 27th issue of The Hollywood Reporter.

THR style editor Carol McColgin explained, "All I knew was that Gaga and Lagerfeld were a go for Saturday the 7th, but we didn't know where or when. Which sounds crazy, but not at THR. I was so jet-lagged that I wore trainers to the shoot, which turned out to be at Coco Chanel's apartment. Fashion sacrilege, yes, but wasn't Coco all about liberation?"

Gaga also chimed in, "We don't make a move today without Karl. That's the way I am with Tony [Bennett] on the stage — he is the star of the show because he is the legend, and it's the same with Karl. Being on Coco's couch and having champagne in her apartment — it should always be a moment that we remember. So we are not just creating fashion as a look but an entire experience. It's our life. It's the reason I do it every day."

Ravens Cut RB Bernard Pierce After DUI Arrest
*Baltimore Ravens running back Bernard Pierce was hit with drunken driving charges early Wednesday morning after he was stopped for speeding in Baltimore County.

He was cut from the team hours later.
Baltimore County police said an officer stopped a Ford Mustang that was speeding around 2 a.m. ET Wednesday in Towson, north of Baltimore. He was going 55 mph in a 30 mph zone, and failed a series of field sobriety tests after he was stopped, according to police spokesman Cpl. John Wachter. Pierce was taken to a station house in Towson for processing, and later released.

Pierce is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired by alcohol and two additional speeding offenses.
Five Ravens players were arrested last year, most notably running back Ray Rice for domestic violence, an offense that led to his suspension by the NFL and his release from the team.

Owner Steve Bisciotti acknowledged the off-field issues made 2014 his “worst year” since taking over the Ravens, and insisted the team would work to avoid grabbing the wrong kind of headlines this offseason.

Things come in waves and we certainly took a crash here last year,” Bisciotti said last month. “There isn’t a lot you can do. We are a team and an organization that cares obviously about our reputation and when it takes a hit, then you examine what you do.
“But in order to take a hit to your reputation, you have to have a pretty good reputation to start with, and we did. Now it’s about proving it was an aberration, and we believe that to be the case.”

So far, little has changed.
Defensive tackle Terrence Cody was indicted in February for animal cruelty and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released by Baltimore as soon as the investigation began.

Also, security director Darren Sanders was charged in December with a sexual offense after he allegedly groped a stadium worker while she escorted him to his car after a game. He is now facing an additional assault charge stemming from the same alleged incident.

It’s The Return of Dru Hill Album Coming 2016
If you’re a Dru Hill fan get excited! Sisqo just announced the quartet is reuniting for a brand new album. And we can expect it to drop sometime next year. In other news, Drake was assaulted in a nightclub in Dubai recently. And it was caught on tape.

It you were a fan of 90s R&B music then surely you remember classic hits from 90s group Dru Hill, such as “In My Bed,” “We’re Not Making Love No More” and “5 Steps,” just to name a few. Well, if you’ve been feenin’ for a Dru Hill fix, you may be in luck.
Lead singer Sisqo dropped by daytime talk show “The Real” to announce Dru Hill is on the comeback trail! Yes…they’re back! Following their 2010 LP InDRUpendence Day, the guys will be reuniting for their fifth studio album. The new project is expected to drop sometime in 2016 and it will commemorate the group’s 20th anniversary. Wow…20 years? We’re getting old.
Sisqo also chopped it up about his new album Last Dragon (which dropped last month), saying it would be his last and final solo music project
Later, the Grammy nominated singer—who’s working his way into acting— talked about influencing younger artists to go platinum blonde and why decided to do it in the first place. He said his girlfriend broke his heart when he was in the 9th grade and he said he wanted to “be someone else.” He recalls seeing Diddy’s baby mama Misa Hylton in the “Big Poppa” video with blonde hair and that’s what inspired him to go blonde. Hmm…ok.

Shonda Rhimes Says She Hates the Word ‘Diversity’
*Shonda Rhimes’ influence on television over the last few years is one that has brought different kinds of stories to viewers.
As the person behind the shows comprising ABC’s popular Thursday night line-up (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “How To Get Away With Murder”), Rhimes is credited with bringing to light diversity to roles that were previously overlooked as well as issues pertaining to women, people of color and the LGBT community.
After accepting the Ally for Equality award at this year’s Human Rights Campaign Gala in Los Angeles, Rhimes touched on how the path she’s laid out with her shows goes deeper than bringing diversity to the small screen.

“I really hate the word ‘diversity,’ it suggests something…other. As if it is something…special. Or rare,” Rhimes said Saturday at the event, which honored her for her contributions to TV. “As if there is something unusual about telling stories involving women and people of color and LGBTQ characters on TV.”
In finding a different way to describe what she’s doing. Rhimes summed it up with one description.
“I have a different word: NORMALIZING. I’m normalizing TV,” she stated while stating how ‘normalizing’ television plays into a bigger objective, which is, “Making TV look like the world looks.”
“Women, people of color, LGBTQ people equal WAY more than 50% of the population. Which means it ain’t out of the ordinary. I am making the world of television look NORMAL,” Rhimes said.

“The goal is that everyone should get to turn on the TV and see someone who looks like them and loves like them. And just as important, everyone should turn on the TV and see someone who doesn’t look like them and love like them. Because, perhaps then, they will learn from them.”

Rihanna Treks It To Texas For HOME Premiere...And Gives MAJOR Donation To Premiere Winner's Food Pantry!
RiRi, rocking a pink PVC coat and purple dress -- both by Holly Fulton -- and Holly Fulton x Christian Louboutin heels, is still on her "modest woman" ish as she promotes her new animated film Home.  She stars as Tip, a curly haired little girl from the islands who is on a search to find her home and her mother.  And the creature she befriends along the way is voiced by Jim Parsons.

The Disney movie teamed up with ABC's "Good Morning America," both are under the same company umbrella, to give a premiere party to one lucky person who exhibits how they give back in their hometown.
When Cheryl Jackson of Plano was named the contest winner, Rihanna and co. booked it to Texas for a cute premiere party:

Cheryl created a large, growing pantry to feed those in her community who are in need, all while literally rolling out an actual red carpet for their spirits to get lifted as they visited the pantry.  She touched the stars with her passion for feeding her community, so it inspired them to give back as well.
Rihanna revealed she donated a huge amount of food to the pantry, while Jim donated $25,000 to her cause to match Dreamworks' $25,000 donation.

Sweet!
