Movie, television legend James Garner dies at 86
Few actors could register disbelief, exasperation or annoyance with more comic subtlety.
James Garner had a way of widening his eyes while the corner of his mouth sagged ever so slightly. Maybe he would swallow once to further make his point.
This portrait of fleeting disquiet could be understood, and identified with, by every member of the audience. Never mind Garner was tall, brawny and, well, movie-star handsome. The persona he perfected was never less than manly, good with his dukes and charming to the ladies, but his heroics were kept human-scale thanks to his gift for the comic turn. He remained one of the people.
He burst on the scene with this disarming style in the 1950s TV Western "Maverick," which led to a stellar career in TV and films such as "The Rockford Files" and his Oscar-nominated "Murphy's Romance."
The 86-year-old Garner, who was found dead of natural causes at his Los Angeles home on Saturday, was adept at drama and action. But he was best known for his low-key, wisecracking style, especially on his hit TV series, "Maverick" and "The Rockford Files."
His quick-witted avoidance of conflict offered a refreshing new take on the American hero, contrasting with the blunt toughness of John Wayne and the laconic trigger-happiness of Clint Eastwood.
There's no better display of Garner's everyman majesty than the NBC series "The Rockford Files" (1974-80). He played an L.A. private eye and wrongly jailed ex-con who seemed to rarely get paid, or even get thanks, for the cases he took, while helplessly getting drawn into trouble to help someone who was neither a client nor maybe even a friend. He lived in a trailer with an answering machine that, in the show's opening titles, always took a message that had nothing to do with a paying job, but more often was a complaining call from a cranky creditor.
Through it all, Jim Rockford, however down on his luck, persevered hopefully. He wore the veneer of a cynic, but led with his heart. Putting all that on screen was Garner's magic.
Well into his 70s, the handsome Oklahoman remained active in both TV and film. In 2002, he was Sandra Bullock's father in the film "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood." The following year, he joined the cast of "8 Simple Rules ... For Dating My Teenage Daughter," playing the grandfather on the sitcom -- and helping ground it with his reassuring presence -- after star John Ritter, who played the father, died during the show's second season.
He even scored in commercials. During the late 1970s, he was paired with actress Mariette Hartley in a popular series of ads for Polaroid cameras. Their on-screen banter felt so authentic that many viewers mistakenly believed they were husband and wife.
When Garner received the Screen Actors Guild's lifetime achievement award in 2005, he quipped, "I'm not at all sure how I got here." But in his 2011 memoir, "The Garner Files," he provided some amusing and enlightening clues, including his penchant for bluntly expressed opinions and a practice for decking people who said something nasty to his face -- including an obnoxious fan and an abusive stepmother.
And when he suspected his studio of cheating him on residual payments -- a not-unheard-of condition in Hollywood -- Garner spoke out loudly and fought back with lawsuits.
They all deserved it, Garner declared in his book.
It was in 1957 when the ABC network, desperate to compete on ratings-rich Sunday night, scheduled "Maverick" against CBS's powerhouse "The Ed Sullivan Show" and NBC's "The Steve Allen Show." To everyone's surprise -- except Garner's-- "Maverick" soon outpolled them both.
At a time when the networks were awash with hard-eyed, traditional Western heroes, Bret Maverick provided a breath of fresh air. With his sardonic tone and his eagerness to talk his way out of a squabble rather than pull out his six-shooter, the con-artist Westerner seemed to scoff at the genre's values.
After a couple of years, Garner felt the series was losing its creative edge, and he found a legal loophole to escape his contract in 1960.
His first film after "Maverick" established him as a movie actor. It was "The Children's Hour," William Wyler's remake of Lillian Hellman's lesbian drama that co-starred Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine.
He followed in a successful comedy with Kim Novak, "Boys Night Out," and then established his box-office appeal with the 1963 blockbuster war drama "The Great Escape" and two smash comedies with Doris Day -- "The Thrill of It All" and "Move Over Darling."
Throughout his film career, Garner demonstrated his versatility in comedies ("The Art of Love," "A Man Could Get Killed," "Skin Game"), suspense ("36 Hours," "They Only Kill Their Masters," "Marlowe"), and Westerns ("Duel at Diablo," "Hour of the Gun," "Support Your Local Gunfighter").
In the 1980s and 1990s, when most stars his age were considered over the hill, Garner's career remained strong. He played a supporting role as a marshal in the 1994 "Maverick," a big-screen return to the TV series with Mel Gibson in Garner's old title role. His only Oscar nomination came for the 1985 "Murphy's Romance," a comedy about a small-town love relationship in which he co-starred with Sally Field.
He starred in a musical, "Victor/Victoria" (1982), and a romantic drama, "The Notebook" (2004).
His favorite film, though, was the cynical 1964 war drama "The Americanization of Emily," which co-starred Julie Andrews.
Unlike most film stars, Garner made repeated returns to television. The show he often cited as his favorite, "Nichols" (1971-72), and "Bret Maverick" (1981-82) were short-lived, but "The Rockford Files" proved a solid hit, bringing him an Emmy.
Among his notable TV movies: "Barbarians at the Gate" (as tycoon F. Ross Johnson), "Breathing Lessons," "The Promise," "My Name Is Bill W.," "The Streets of Laredo" and "One Special Night."
He said he learned about acting while playing a non-speaking role as a Navy juror in the 1954 Broadway hit play "The Caine Mutiny Court Martial," starring Henry Fonda and Lloyd Nolan.
"I had no lines, and I had trouble staying awake," Garner recalled.
After "Caine Mutiny," Garner found work in Hollywood as a bit player in the "Cheyenne" TV series. Warner Bros. gave him a screen test and signed him to a seven-year contract starting at $200 a week.
The studio cast him in supporting roles in three minor films, followed by the important break as Marlon Brando's sidekick in "Sayonara." When Charlton Heston declined a war movie, "Darby's Rangers," because of a money dispute, Garner assumed the role.
"Maverick," which co-starred Jack Kelly as brother Bart Maverick, made its debut on Sept. 22, 1957, launching him as a star.
Garner was born James Scott Bumgarner (some references say Baumgarner) in Norman, Oklahoma. His mother died when he was 5, and friends and relatives cared for him and his two brothers for a time while his father was in California.
In 1957, Garner married TV actress Lois Clarke, who survives him. She had a daughter Kimberly from a previous marriage, and the Garners had another daughter, Gretta Scott.
In the late 1990s, the Garners built a 12,000-square-foot house on a 400-acre ranch north of Santa Barbara, California.
"My wife and I felt ... we'd just watch the sunset from the front porch," Garner said in 2000. "But then the phone started ringing with all these wonderful offers, and we decided, `Heck, let's stay in the business for a while."'

to deliver the keynote speech on the importance of keeping arts education in our
school systems and to honor singer Janelle Monae at the Grammy Museum's Jane
Ortner Education Award luncheon.
The six-time Grammy
nominated singer was honored, along with teacher Sunshine Cavalluzzi, for her
efforts in mentoring young students through the Grammy Museum's educational
efforts.
During Mrs. Obama’s
speech, she talked about expanding programs so that each child is introduced and
exposed to the arts, which she believes is the key to unlock a world of
possibilities for our young people.
She
said,
"So many of the young
people walk away transformed with a new sense of purpose and hope," she said.
"Engagement in the arts can unlock a world of possibilities for our young
people. ... For many young people, arts education is the only reason they get
out of bed in the morning, just like
Janelle."

Beyonce Knowles' Famous
Ensembles Headed to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
She’s one of the biggest
stars around, and now Beyoncé Knowles' is snagging a place in one of the
funkiest museums in the country.
On Friday morning (July
18), the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced that starting next week, the
“Drunk in Love” singer’s iconic outfits are going to be on display inside the
museum.
Exhibits of this nature
were only offered to Hall of Fame inductees like Michael Jackson and David Bowie
in the past. Beyonce isn’t even eligible to be inducted until
2022.
According to reports, the
exhibit features a wide array of ensembles from Bey’s music videos, red carpet
events and even her Super Bowl halftime show
performance.
One of the most popular
items on display will surely be the singer’s Lorraine Schwartz-designed metal
glove from the “Single Ladies” music video.
Lady Gaga’s Former
Assistant Jennifer O’Neill Reportedly Releasing Tell-All Book
After their widely public
dispute, Lady Gaga's ex-assistant Jennifer O’Neill reportedly signed on with
Atria Books to write a tell-all novel about the “Poker Face”
singer.
O'Neill sued Lady Gaga
last year for $393,000 in back pay after working for the pop star from 2009 to
2011.
According to sources, the
former assistant's book will lay out plenty of revealing stories like Jen being
required to share a bed with Gaga because the singer didn’t like sleeping alone.
Also, being forced to wake in the middle of the night to change the DVD because
Gaga didn’t feel like doing it herself.
In her deposition, Lady
Gaga (whose former name is Stefani Germanotta) called O’Neill, a “f***ing hood
rat who is suing me for money that she didn’t earn.” The case was settled out of
court in October 2013.
It is reported that
O’Neill’s book deal could be worth up to $1 million but there are no definite
terms at this time.

taping went down last week. And it ended with one big bang…actually multiple big
bangs. Multiple fights broke out which resulted in the cops and paramedics
having to come on the scene to tend to several people who were
injured.
Cast mates Benzino and
his fiancée Althea Heart believe Mona Scott-Young was behind all of the
shenanigans that went down during the reunion show taping. Why? Well…a picture
surfaced soon after the brawls, which led them to believe Mona was behind it
all.
It was reported, Joseline
was the aggressor in all of the fights that broke out. After taping for the
reunion ended, Stevie J posted a picture of Joseline with a friend….and who is
in the middle? Mona Scott-Young!
According to Benzino,
Mona went out to dinner at Mr. Chows with Joseline right after the reunion.
Stevie allegedly posted the picture (above) and was supposedly asked by Mona to
take it down. But you know, what’s it’s out there, it’s out

Alexandra Shipp To Play
Aaliyah In Upcoming Lifetime Biopic
Lifetime is moving
forward with its upcoming Aaliyah biopic, with Nickelodeon star Alexandra Shipp
to play the late singer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Alexandra
replaces Zendaya Coleman, who was initially tapped to take on the role – but
backed out of the project in June.
Alexandra starred in
Nickelodeon’s House of Anubis, and has appeared in episodes of Switched at
Birth, Awkward and Ray Donovan. She’s also playing the lead role in the upcoming
Drumline sequel, Drumline 2: A New Beat.
The original movie,
titled Aaliyah: Princess of R&B, will be produced by Wendy Williams‘
production company, Wendy Williams Production. The talk show host took to
Twitter with the news on Friday, saying:
I’m excited to exec
produce the Aaliyah @lifetimetv movie w/ @DebraMChase. Prod starts later this
month and @AlexShipppp will play Aaliyah.
Filming will resume this
summer, and a fall premiere is expected.

Kordell Stewart Hit With Tax Lien
Apparently Apollo Nida
isn’t the only one in trouble with the law. Kordell may have walked away from
his divorce with his finances still in tact, but it appears that he’s
experiencing some financial difficulties in another area. According to Radar
Online, the former “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star has been hit with quite a
hefty tax lien by the state of Georgia.
If reports are correct,
then the former NFL star failed to pay $8,532 in taxes for 2012. After interest,
penalties and other fees, his tax bill comes to a whopping $13, 240.88.
Apparently, Uncle Sam has already placed a levy on all of his assets, which they
will seize and sell in an auction if he doesn’t cough up the cash
owed.

Nina Simone’s Daughter
Calls Her A ‘Monster’
It’s no secret that the
legendary and talented soul singer, Nina Simone, was also a very troubled woman.
Simone battled bipolar disorder, depression and alcoholism, but, it’s what her
daughter, Lisa Simone, has to say about the singer that has many up in
arms.
For the first time since
her mother’s death in 2003, Lisa is discussing the strained relationship between
mother and daughter.
She tells the Daily Mail
UK, “My mother could be a monster. I was not a happy child when I was alone with
her. My mum shot me down a lot, attacked me in public. It is easy to attack
children, they are small and depend on you.”
Lisa recalled that when
her mother wasn’t dragging her around the world while on tour, she was
“blackmailed and beaten” whenever she was
defiant.
She also says that she
had 13 governesses by the age of seven, was working at ten and was her mother’s
chauffeur by 12 but walked out at 14 after a
beating.
Following the incident,
Nina refused to support Lisa’s career in the U.S. Air Force or her entry into
music. She then disinherited her from her
will.
“I’d like to think if she
had taken two seconds to think about her behavior she would have done things
differently but I’m not sure.”
“My mother was angry with
the world and often the only person around to blame was
me.”
“When my parents were
together my mother was more giving and open but with the divorce she turned into
someone you didn’t want to know.”
Lisa was also in the news
last year for voicing her opinion on the upcoming biopic about her mother’s
life. She expressed her disapproval for actress Zoe Saldana being chosen to play
the role. “The goal [of the biopic] seems to be to bleed me dry of everything my
mother stood for, of everything she sacrificed,” she says. “She had many
experiences in her life that left her feeling sad and
angry…”
“Zoe Saldana portraying
her is a bad joke because there are more gifted actresses who are more in
keeping with my mother’s appearance. I know how my mother would feel about Zoe,
so they are making a mockery of her experiences to construct their own
truth.”
Lisa is also in the midst
of a lawsuit where she’s been accused of stealing $2 million from her mother’s
estate; which list’s Nina’s tax adviser, Mark Lenniman, as the
beneficiary.
Of the lawsuit and
difficulties she’s faced Lisa adds, “Ugly truths have come out and relationships
have died because people treated me as a
commodity.”
“Too many people had
ulterior motives.”

release of her new album, Jhene Aiko, releases a new song entitled, “The
Pressure.” On the smooth track, the 26-year-old sings about the pressure of

my control. The way you feel is not my problem. I don’t want to see you go. But,
I don’t have time to solve this,” she sings. The Fisticuffs-produced cut is set
